The four passengers along with the two remaining remains that were recovered yesterday (23/01) have arrived in Surabaya this afternoon for further identification purposes.The Disaster Victim Identification Police Department Republic of Indonesia (DVI POLRI) announced that there is no identification release today. JAKARTA:Indonesian salvage teams launched an operation to raise the fuselage of AirAsia Flight 8501 from the sea bed on Saturday as they recovered four more bodies from the wreckage of the crashed jet.The bid came a day after divers were able to enter the main section of the jet, which crashed in the Java Sea last month, for the first time.Difficult weather conditions for the past week had stopped rescuers reaching the main part of the Airbus A320-200 since it was spotted on the seabed by a military vessel earlier this month."We have begun the operation today to lift the main body and we hope we can float it today," S.B. KUALA LUMPUR: The Government of Malaysia will file an application to strike out a suit filed by two sons of a passenger on MAS Flight MH370 which has had to be traced since going missing on March 8 last year.Senior Federal Counsel Kamal Azira Hassan told this to reporters after the case was mentioned in the chambers of Judge Datuk Rosnaini Saub."We have yet to file the application to strike out the suit but have informed the court on the matter," said Kamal Azira.Kamal Azira said the court had set Feb 17 for case management. The government filed its defence statement last month.The proceedings today was also attended by counsel Datuk Dr S. Arunan, representing the two brothers as plaintiffs.On Oct 31, the two brothers aged 12 and 14 years through their mother, Ng Pearl Ming, 39, filed the suit and named Malaysian Airlines System Berhad (MAS), Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) director-general, Immigration Department director-general, Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) chief and the Government of Malaysia as defendants.In their statement of claim, the brothers alleged that their father, Jee Jing Hang, 41, a passenger of MH370 aircraft, had entered into a flight contract agreement with MAS on their flight from Kuala Lumpur at 12.41 midnight and was expected to land in Beijing at 6.30am on March 8.The plaintiffs alleged that through the agreement, MAS as the first defendant should have taken all necessary steps to ensure the flight was safe but had breached the agreement when it failed to land in Beijing and there were no details on the last moments of the plane till today.Apart from that, the plaintiffs also named the DCA director-general as the second defendant as the party responsible for air traffic control to ensure the flight was safe, but failed to take adequate measures to communicate and track the flight with radar.The brothers also claimed that the Immigration Department had failed and was negligent in conducting detailed inspections on the aircraft's passengers who boarded the plane using forged identification.They also alleged RMAF had failed and was negligent in scrambling a plane to identify an unscheduled aircraft appearing in RMAF's radar system (on March 8) which could have been the MH370 aircraft.Both plantiffs, among others, are claiming compensation from all defendants on the loss of their father who was a businessman with a monthly income of RM16,865 and additional compensation for the suffering endured by them.MH370 was carrying 227 passengers and 12 crew members from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, when it disappeared from the radar screen about one hour after departing KL International Airport on the day of the incident.Efforts to find the aircraft is still going on in the Indian Ocean.

SYDNEY: Missing airliner MH370 is "very likely" to be found if it lies in the vast undersea zone now being scoured, and is probably in good condition despite being submerged for 10 months, the Australian search chief told AFP.Three vessels, with a fourth on the way, are probing the depths of the Indian Ocean off western Australia where the Malaysian Airlines plane carrying 239 people, mostly Chinese, is believed to have crashed.The jet disappeared en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on March 8 last year, and apart from some mysterious satellite "pings" believed to plot its southern course, no sign of it has been found despite a massive air and sea operation.Relatives of those on board have endured a long wait for answers on what happened to their loved ones, with their torment reawakened by AirAsia Flight QZ8501 crashing into the sea off Indonesia on December 28.So far, one quarter of the priority underwater search area of 60,000 square kilometres (23,166 square miles) has been checked, while a wider zone of 208,000 square kilometres has been mapped."Our satellite calculations gave us an area we determined was high priority," Martin Dolan, the chief commissioner of the Australian Transport Safety Bureau, which is leading the search, told AFP."In this 60,000 square kilometres, it's very likely we will find the aircraft, but we don't know exactly where. We just have to cover that area thoroughly until we find the aircraft."The priority search began in early October and will accelerate over the next few months as weather conditions improve, with the hunt expected to wrap up in May.If the jet is not found, a decision on extending the investigation would be made by Australia and Malaysia, which have jointly shouldered the cost.

Undersea revelations

Dolan said mapping had led to the discovery of previously unknown undersea features such as mountains, volcanoes, chasms and a rough, uneven sea floor, highlighting the challenges.To take a closer look at the complex terrain, the Australian and Malaysian governments said Wednesday they were jointly funding the fourth ship, Fugro Supporter, to join the probe later this month.While the other three vessels -- Fugro Equator, Fugro Discovery and GO Phoenix -- use sophisticated sonar systems attached to tow cables up to 10 kilometres (6.2 miles) long, the Supporter will have an autonomous underwater vehicle."(It) can be programmed and cover areas much more thoroughly. It's of course a lot slower," Dolan said, adding that about five percent of the search area needed the closer scrutiny."We need to go slow so that we can be 100 percent sure that we have covered that area totally."

No oxygen, no decay

The underwater probe is taking place in treacherous surface conditions with waves as high as 12 metres (39 feet). Authorities believe the plane may be sitting on the ocean floor at depths of 4,000-metres.But the deep sea plays an important role in preserving the aircraft if that was its resting place, Dolan said."At the likely depth we think the aircraft is, around about 4,000 metres below the sea surface, there's very little going on there... that's likely to affect the components of the aircraft we are looking for," he said."The second is that down there there's very little or no oxygen, so there's not anything in the way of oxidisation or decay going on with aircraft parts."The sonar equipment we are using means that -- even if there's an amount of silt or other things -- we can still locate the aircraft parts."We are confident there's going to be enough visible parts of the aircraft for us to be able to detect it."Authorities have drawn up a recovery plan if the plane is found.The proposal, which is still being assessed, would use technology and techniques similar to those deployed to recover Air France flight AF447, Dolan said.The French flag carrier, including its "black box" flight data recorder, was hauled from the Atlantic nearly two years after it crashed en route from Rio de Janeiro to Paris on June 1, 2009, killing all 228 on board.Some Aus$120 million (US$98 million) has so far been jointly committed by Australia and Malaysia to fund the search."We are confident that if we are looking in the right area -- as we think we are -- we will find the aircraft," Dolan said."It's just that it's a very large area, so it's going to take a long time."

With the MH17 tragedy, the Kingdom of Netherlands experienced in a direct way how intertwined today’s global crises are. Foreign affairs have become terribly personal for many of my compatriots."We lost almost 200 (Dutch) citizens but also many families around the world (lost their beloved ones). We are still working hard with all those who facilitate the investigation whose aim is to hold those responsible to account," Koenders said while addressing the packed IPI auditorium.But, he added, the incident also revealed that in his country, like in many other countries, that “international crises can touch individual citizens even far away”, making internal and foreign policy become more than ever inter-related.Asked to explain the official position of the Dutch Government on the MH17 downing and whether it had been determined who or what caused the downing of the plane, Koenders told Bernama that a 'thorough investigation' was under way.Describing the question as 'very, very important', Koenders said that the answer to this question had to be done in a 'very professional way that shows that we take this investigation of this shooting down very seriously'.Koenders replied at length to this correspondent as he said that he was unable to pinpoint at this point who was responsible for the shooting down of the MH17 plane."We have an investigation team that has worked intensively in the Ukraine as also in The Hague in close cooperation with other countries in a so-called joint investigation team ... the countries are Australia, Malaysia ... and also, obviously, we had to work with the Ukraine to get the wreckage, and getting all.that access was very complex."And as we speak, there is an independent investigation that takes place in the context of this cooperation with other countries, run, primarily, by a Netherlands-based independent group which has a Dutch structure but also has cooperation with other countries," he said, adding that the group hopes to provide its findings in a report later this year.This would make it 'very clear' on the basis of a thorough investigation to determine exactly what happened and provide proof that is without any reasonable doubt."That takes a little time to be very clear so that we can, hopefully, ascertain without any doubt the responsibility (of the perpetrators)...But the Dutch foreign minister, who said that it was an enormous task getting hold of the aircraft wreckage and collating all the information from around the world, also emphasised the importance of the legal process to bring those responsible for shooting down of the plane to justice."I want to underline the importance of the fact that the shooting down of the plane has been also part of discussions in the Security Council. We do this in a completely objective way, that is why it is important to mention this so that we can in a second part, in the legal process, ensure that those who are responsible for this are in front of a judge at some point of time -- better sooner than later," Koenders said.A United Nations official, insisting on anonymity, told Bernama that the MH17 issue was a big domestic issue in the Netherlands. German companies were likely instrumental in building Syria’s chemical weapons arsenal, and the German government has endeavored to prevent these companies’ dealings from coming to light, according to a damning report in German newspaper Der Spiegel.The German daily reported late Friday that Berlin has had for the past 16 months a list of companies provided by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), which allegedly supplied the Syrian regime with technology and materials used to develop and build up its chemical weapons stockpile.But instead of investigating those companies, the government has classified the document and refused to give any details on its contents, saying releasing the information would “significantly impair foreign policy interests” as well as violate the companies’ constitutional rights to trade secrecy.The paper speculated that the government had several reasons to do so: Besides embarassing Germany on the global stage, releasing the report would cause internal strife on issues of government regulation of trade, as well as reflect badly on Chancellor Angela Merkel’s own ruling party and its former leader, ex-chancellor Helmut Kohl.Der Spiegel alleged that German businesses’ complicity in chemical weapons manufacturing — whether knowingly or otherwise — goes back decades, with historical government documents indicating heavy involvement by German companies in building up Saddam Hussein’s stash during the Iraq-Iran war of the 1980s. Israel has sent calming messages to Iran and Hezbollah via Russia, Channel 10 reported Friday night, clarifying that it is uninterested in an escalating conflict with Tehran or the Lebanese terror group.The report, which cited unnamed government sources, followed days of tensions along the northern border, after Iranian and Hezbollah leaders vowed revenge for an airstrike in Syria which left 12 Iranians and Hezbollah operatives dead. The airstrike has been attributed to Israel and though Jerusalem has not officially confirmed it, anonymous government sources have admitted as much.The dead included an Iranian general and senior Hezbollah commanders, Muhammad Issa and Jihad Mughniyeh, son of slain terror mastermind Imad Mughniyeh.According to Channel 10, Israeli officials told Moscow that Israel viewed the strike as an act of self-defense, and that Hezbollah had forced Israel’s hand by building an offensive infrastructure on its border. Jerusalem stressed it did not want the situation to deteriorate into a regional conflict. Russian leaders conveyed this message to Beirut and Tehran.Meanwhile a Hezbollah official has said the group’s response to the attack would not come from Lebanese territory, Israel Radio reported Saturday. Hezbollah parliamentary representative Muhammad Fanish reportedly told the Lebanese government in a meeting Thursday that his organization did not wish to drag Lebanon into a war with Israel and would not endanger the country by attacking Israel from within its territory.Israel has long feared that Hezbollah would seek to avenge the death of Imad Mughniyeh by striking at Israeli or Jewish targets abroad, using its global terror network. Russia is scaling down its hugely successful cooperative effort with the U.S. to secure its nuclear materials, raising concerns over the safety and security of tons of dangerous nuclear materials. Security and non- proliferation experts said the move harms a global effort to secure nuclear material and could leave materials vulnerable to theft by terrorists.Russia has decided to no longer take U.S. funding for on-site security, training and nuclear security measures at its borders under the 25-year-old Cooperative Threat Reduction program that the two countries agreed upon following the fall of the USSR in the early 1990s, according to the Boston Globe. The CTR programs were set to end in 2018, but the Russians are pulling out early amid strained relations between the two countries over the ongoing rebel crisis in Ukraine. “If the U.S. and Russia aren’t leading then that sets a bad example for the rest of the world. We have a special responsibility to combat nuclear terrorism,” said Andrew Bieniawski, of the Nuclear Threat Initiative in Washington, D.C. “This is an area that should not be subject to what is going on in the broader geopolitical situation.”Over 7,500 warheads were dismantled under the CTR program since 1991, according to the U.S. Department of Defense’s Defense Threat Reduction Agency. The U.S. paid at least $2 billion since 1991 to Russia to fund security upgrades around the country over fears that terrorists could get their hands on nuclear materials through the scores of disgruntled, unpaid workers or corrupt officials in the chaos of post-Soviet Russia.While the upgrades have vastly improved security at facilities and the border, there was more work to be done. The U.S. allocated $100 million for upgrades in 2015. In July, the U.S. Department of Energy warned that “securing these stockpiles will not [be done] to the standards necessary unless the United States continues to invest."The CTR programs were never popular with hawkish politicians in either country. In Russia, taking on the projects independently was a matter of pride and practicality. It allowed Russia to move past the embarrassing 1990s and would keep U.S. eyes out of sensitive military and nuclear facilities, said Nikolai Sokov, a senior fellow at the Vienna Center for Diarmament and Non-Proliferation.“Now that they won’t allow access, it begs the question, how do you gain confidence that all these upgrades are being sustained and put in use?” Bieniawski said.The Russian government is tight-lipped about their stores of nuclear material, but as of 2012 there were around 4,000 warheads were retired and awaiting dismantlement, according to CNN. As far as active and stockpiled operational warheads, Russia has around 8,000, or just under half of the global total. The U.S. has much of the other half: around 7,300.Russia also has around 695 metric tons of weapons grade highly enriched uranium and 128 metric tons of military use plutonium, according to the Nuclear Threat Initiative. About 25 kilograms of highly enriched uranium is needed to create a traditional nuclear weapon.There is at least 300,000 cubic meters of low and medium-grade nuclear materials waiting to be placed in repositories in Russia, which likely can’t be used to build a traditional nuclear weapon, but could be used to build a “dirty bomb,” or a conventional bomb laced with radioactive material. The Islamic State militant group claimed to have made a dirty bomb late last year with as little as 40 kilograms of uranium, although those claims have not been confirmed.For comparison, all nuclear facilities worldwide produce around 200,000 cubic meters of low and intermediate-level waste every year.Russia’s national waste management agency said in October its main problems moving forward include problems managing the local authorities where waste will be located and a lack of funding for the communities surrounding the proposed sites, according to World Nuclear News.Even with the upgrades, smugglers are still trying to their hands on materials. Hundreds of plots to steal or buy nuclear materials in Russia were reported in the 2000s and were foiled with the help of the American entities.More recently, in 2010, Armenian officials arrested a man trying to sell highly enriched uranium for the second time, which he said he got from a supplier who himself got the material from “contact” in the Russian Urals region and Siberia. He was caught the first time at the Armenian-Georgian border when his smuggled stock set of radiation detectors, but he was able to bribe himself out of detention, possibly even keeping some of his materials, according to the Guardian.The risk of a successful smuggling operation is increased now that the U.S. will not help oversee the implementation of security measures, experts said. Shota Utiashvili, head of analysis for Georgia’s interior ministry, said after the 2010 arrest that “the level of corruption in Russia and the increasing immunity of senior officers means that they may well try to sell this stuff again.”Nuclear cooperation has long been a landmark of the sometimes contentious Russo-American relationship, because it always continued despite any political tensions between the nations. Along with the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty and the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, the CTR program ensured that the U.S. and Russia would put their differences aside to ensure nuclear security.“As the two largest possessors of fissile material on the planet, the United States and Russia have a responsibility to continue to ensure the highest standards of security for these materials,” said Kingston Reif, director for disarmament and threat reduction policy at the Arms Control Association in Washington, D.C.

(CNN)After the death of King Abdullah, Saudi Arabia quickly announced that one of his younger brothers, Crown Prince Salman, was succeeding him.The man taking control of the world's top oil exporter is well established in the Gulf kingdom's corridors of power.Salman, 79, is "a stalwart of the royal family" who is "viewed as a pragmatic and cautious reformer, much like his predecessor," says CNN's Becky Anderson in Abu Dhabi.He has served as defense minister and deputy prime minister of Saudi Arabia, a vital U.S. ally in the Middle East, for years. Like Abdullah, he's one of the dozens of sons of Saudi Arabia's founder, King Abdulaziz.

Here are some of the key points about the new ruler.

He's an experienced leader

Salman was governor of the Saudi capital, Riyadh, for nearly five decades during a period of significant change."When he became governor in 1963, Riyadh had 200,000 inhabitants — today it has more than seven million," Bruce Riedel, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution's Center for Middle East Policy, said in a commentary. "Salman presided over this remarkable transformation with a record for good governance and a lack of corruption.""He had to be a combination ... of a reformer, of a judge, a jury in some cases, and deal with dissent, as well as dealing with economic issues," Robert Jordan, a former U.S. ambassador to Saudi Arabia, told CNN. "So I think he's well prepared for the task at hand."Salman's experience running Riyadh also involved keeping many of the numerous members of the Saudi royal family in line."Since most of the royal princes and princesses live in Riyadh, he was also the family sheriff, ensuring any transgressions were dealt with smoothly and quietly, with no publicity," said Riedel, who worked for the CIA for 30 years.His national roles have since brought him wider responsibility.Salman "has been chairing cabinet meetings for several months and handling almost all foreign travel responsibilities for the monarchy since he became the heir in 2012," Riedel said.

He's unlikely to rock the boat

Salman's ascension to the throne is in line with the appointments put in place by Abdullah before his death."I think that you'll see a continuation -- very similar policies, very similar dynamics unfolding," said James Zogby, president of the Arab American Institute. "The kingdom is modernizing; it's changing, it's reforming and it will continue to do so over the next several decades."Riedel says the royal family "values family collegiality and harmony highly.""The two previous Saudi kingdoms in the 18th and 19th centuries were wracked by internal family squabbles, which their foreign enemies exploited," he explains. "With the Arab world facing its worst crisis in decades, the royals will want to present an image of stability and strength."

There are concerns about his health

Salman is one of Abdullah's younger brothers. But at 79, he's not particularly young.There are unconfirmed reports that he may have various health problems. But with Saudi Arabian media tightly controlled by the state, nobody's really sure what his condition is.Riedel says Salman has had a stroke, Simon Henderson of the Washington Institute says the new king's brain is "ravaged by dementia," and The Economist reports he's believed to be suffering from Alzheimer's."Reports do differ sharply over just how ill Prince Salman really is -- and medical reports on the illnesses of the Saudi royal family can be grossly inaccurate," cautioned Anthony H. Cordesman, a Middle East expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.Salman's schedule of official meetings suggests a degree of health. But Henderson isn't convinced it proves he's highly capable."The fact that Salman appears in public at all is attributed to his determination to become king -- or, more likely, the ambition of his closest relatives that he should do so," he wrote last month.

He has a successor waiting in the wings

Salman's first order after assuming the throne was to appoint his youngest brother, Prince Muqrin, as the new crown prince.Analysts see that appointment as an effort to ensure future stability. Abdullah had named Muqrin as deputy crown prince in March.At 69 years old, Muqrin is relatively youthful. A former head of intelligence for the kingdom, he is also reportedly well-liked by world leaders.Muqrin "has been closely linked to Abdullah and his policies of modernization and reform," according to Cordesman.But the succession plan isn't without its critics. Muqrin's mother does not have royal blood, which is a sticking point for some people in Saudi Arabia.

His sons include an astronaut and a fighter pilot

Several of Salman's sons also hold prominent positions.They include Prince Sultan, who in the 1980s became the first Muslim astronaut and is now the president of Saudi Arabia's tourism authority; Prince Abdulaziz, the deputy oil minister; and Prince Faisal, the governor of the Medina region.Another son, Prince Khaled, was reportedly among the pilots who carried out the first airstrikes on ISIS positions in Syria last year.Details about Salman's earlier life and upbringing weren't immediately available Friday. DAVOS: The final report on the Malaysia Airlines (MAS) Flight MH17 tragedy is expected to be ready after the middle of this year, Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said here.Najib, who is leading the Malaysian delegation to the 45th World Economic Forum here, said he was informed so by Netherlands Prime Minister Mark Rutte at a bilateral meeting on Thursday.Najib, who is also finance minister, said the report was being prepared by an independent committee set up to investigate the tragedy."He (Rutte) has assured me that he would inform me first of the findings and conclusions before making the report public."The Dutch prime minister has reiterated that the MH17 tragedy has brought our two countries closer together," he told Malaysian journalists covering the WEF, Thursday.Flight MH17 crashed in eastern Ukraine on July 17 as it was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur with 283 passengers and 15 crew on board. The late monarch's half brother Moqren was named crown prince, according to the statement.Abdullah will be buried later Friday following afternoon prayers, and citizens would be invited to pledge allegiance to the new 79-year-old monarch and the crown prince at the royal palace, the statement said. Abdullah was hospitalised in December suffering from pneumonia and had been breathing with the aid of a tube.Under Abdullah, who took the throne in 2005, Saudi Arabia has been a key US ally in the Arab world, most recently joining the US-led coalition carrying out air strikes against the Islamic State group in Syria and Iraq. SALMAN TO FOLLOW BROTHER'S FOOTSTEPS

The kingdom is also home to Islam's holiest sites, Mecca and Medina, and its role as a spiritual leader for Sunni Muslims has seen it vying for regional influence with Shiite-dominated Iran. Salman, the new king, is widely expected to follow closely in his brother's footsteps, in foreign and energy policy as well as in making moderate reforms to the deeply conservative kingdom.Abdullah pushed through cautious changes while in power, challenging conservatives with moves such as including women in the Shura Council, an advisory body. He promoted the kingdom's economic development and oversaw its accession to the World Trade Organization, tapping into the country's massive oil wealth to build new economic cities, universities and high-speed railways.But the kingdom is still strongly criticised for a dismal human rights record, including the imprisonment of dissidents. Saudi Arabia is also the only country in the world that does not allow women to drive. Salman is a stalwart of the royal family credited with transforming the capital Riyadh during his half-century as governor.Recent years have seen concerns over his health after operations on his back, but Salman took on an increasingly high-profile role as Abdullah's own health issues forced him from the limelight.
