Does Israel Really Have ‘Sponge Bombs’ For Sealing Tunnels? -A portable system capable of rapidly sealing up tunnels without blowing them up would be major boon for Israeli forces operating in Gaza.byJoseph Trevithick| PUBLISHED Oct 27, 2023 1:21 PM EDT
Israeli forces are prepared to employ "sponge bombs" that produce quick-hardening foam to seal off tunnels used by terrorists in the Gaza Strip, according to a recent report. Though unconfirmed, there is some precedent for the use of devices that create hard or at least very sticky foam by military and other security forces. The Telegraph newspaper in the United Kingdom published a story about the purported Israeli foam-dispensing 'bombs' on Wednesday. It is important to note up front that, at the time of writing, the Telegraph's piece does not appear to cite any sources, on the record or anonymous, and explicitly says "the IDF [Israel Defense Forces] has not commented on the use" of these devices. As described by the Telegraph, the devices contain a binary chemical mixture that only blends together when the device is activated. The system is reportedly small and light enough to be emplaced, or even thrown, by a single individual.Israeli "soldiers were seen deploying the devices during exercises in 2021," according to the Telegraph, but no further details or imagery are provided. "The [Israeli] army has set up a mock tunnel system at the Tze’Elim army base near the border with Gaza."Tze’Elim is publicly known to host a mock Palestinian village with an underground tunnel network specifically to help prepare IDF personnel for ground operations in places like Gaza. To this point, this training site is even nicknamed "Little Gaza.""The 'sponge bomb' – technically a liquid emulsion – is hazardous to work with, and some Israeli soldiers have lost their sight through mishandling the mixture," the Telegraph reported, again without providing any substantiating information.Whether or not the IDF's sponge bombs exist or not, a device like the one the Telegraph's report describes does not seem impossible to develop. Various grades of quick-hardening and expanding foam are in widespread use in commercial construction and might be able to provide a useful seal, at least temporarily. One U.S. manufacturer of commercial urethane foam, U.S. Composites, Inc., says that its "16LB density foam is essentially as hard as a rock" and "you would need a hammer in order to make any dents in this product."Construction is, of course, a very different context from military operations in tunnels, where it would also be very important for any foam to be applied as quickly as possible. Still, a more specialized mixture could conceivably be derived from existing commercial formulations that could offer something more suitable for military use.It is also worth noting that many commercial-available chemical foams, including types not designed to harden and that are used for entertainment purposes, can cause various degrees of eye injuries. This is at least broadly in line with the mention of 'lost sight' in the Telegraph's report, which could refer to temporary or more serious losses of vision from mishandling the foam.On top of all this, there are multiple known examples of spray foams that become extremely sticky, even glue-like, being used, or at least tested, by military and security forces, including in the United States. The U.S. Marine Corps fielded devices designed to shoot streams of sticky foam as a non-lethal tool for immobilizing hostile individuals at least on a limited basis in the past. At least some Marine units sent to Somalia in the 1990s notably had this capability on hand. It is unclear whether or not this system is still in the Corps' inventory. In 2009, the U.S. Army awarded a contract for work on a similar-sounding capability to what the Marines used, which was also intended primarily to be used for non-lethal crowd control. It is unknown how far the service pursued this project. The company the Army hired to provide those systems, Adherent Technologies of Albuquerque New Mexico, claimed at the time to offer foam strong enough that it could be used to stop commercial cars and trucks in their tracks.Dispensers full of super-sticky immobilizing foam are also known to be among the defensive features found on heavily modified tractor trailer trucks that the Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) uses to move nuclear weapons and other related sensitive cargoes. You can read more about these specialized trucks and their potentially James Bond-esque self-defense capabilities here.A 'bomb' full of quick hardening and expanding foam could be very useful for Israeli forces in any impending ground operations in Gaza. Hamas and other terrorist groups there make use of an extensive tunnel network that has been dubbed the "Gaza Metro."The War Zone recently highlighted the challenges tunnels pose in a larger piece on the dangers Israeli forces would face in Gaza, writing:"Tunnels give combatants a seemingly magical ability to pop up out of nowhere just to quickly disappear again. Just finding the tunnels themselves can be a huge challenge and destroying all of them in such a way they can't easily be reconstituted is another major undertaking.""Subterranean combat is extremely perilous. With movements totally restricted — a fatal funnel may be around every turn — no support from the air and limited communications, unique tactics are needed not just to succeed, but to survive when fighting in such conditions. The enemy has a massive upper hand as they know the underground layout and are prepared to capitalize on every advantage that it offers."With all this in mind, being able to rapidly seal tunnels, even just certain portions of a specific network, would reduce the total number of vectors for potential threats to flow through and otherwise limit their utility. Enemy forces might find themselves trapped within, too. Even if the foam only offers a temporary seal, it would also still suck up enemy time and resources to reopen blocked passages. There are other ways at Israel's disposal to seal tunnels in Gaza, including teams on the ground emplacing explosive charges and airstrikes. However, those means present additional risks for collateral damage, including secondary explosions from weapons and ammunition inside passages detonating following an initial blast. The "sponge bomb," at least as described, would seem to offer a more immediate and exponentially less invasive option.Regardless, of course, it remains possible that the 'sponge bomb' report is false, either in part or in full. The War Zone has previously highlighted how unsupported claims about "secret" or "unusual" military capabilities can evolve organically, as well as be fabricated deliberately, in a piece discussing still curious reports in 2017 about U.S. forces using "electricity bombs" in Syria. In this particular instance, it is perhaps interesting to note that the Telegraph's 'sponge bomb' story came out the same day as an extremely dubious and entirely unsubstantiated report from Middle East Eye claiming that the U.S. military is preparing to help Israeli forces flood Gaza's tunnels with nerve gas. A single anonymous "senior Arab source familiar with the Palestinian groups" is cited in that story, which has already been altered in its key details at least once since publication. With the information available now, The War Zone just cannot conclusively say whether or not Israeli forces actually have foam-dispensing 'bombs' to seal up tunnels. At the same time, relevant capabilities are known to exist and to have been tested and employed by military and other security forces before. If and when a major Israeli ground incision into Gaza finally comes, harder evidence of these reported foam-spewing devices, which could be very useful in temporarily neutralizing tunnel networks, may finally emerge.
Biden says Hamas attack ‘deepening the wound’ of 2018 Pittsburgh synagogue massacre-Marking five years since 11 killed in shooting at Tree of Life, US president notes commemoration comes weeks after ‘the deadliest day for the Jewish people since the Holocaust’By Ron Kampeas Today, 4:48 am 0-OCT 28
WASHINGTON (JTA) — On the fifth anniversary of the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting, US President Joe Biden drew a straight line between the worst antisemitic attack in American history and Hamas’s deadly October 7 invasion of Israel.“A gunman opened fire on Sabbath worshippers as they prayed, murdering 11 precious souls, wounding many more – including first responders,” Biden said Friday in his statement marking October 27.“Deepening the wound, today’s remembrance comes on the heels of the deadliest day for the Jewish people since the Holocaust,” Biden said. “On October 7th, a sacred Jewish holiday, the terrorist group Hamas unleashed pure evil against the people of Israel, slaughtering 1,400 Jews and taking hostage hundreds more.” October 7 was the Jewish festival of Shemini Atzeret-Simchat Torah in Israel.Biden’s weaving the two attacks, one committed by white nationalists, the other by radical Islamist terrorists, into the same cloth, marks a sharp shift from the launch of his campaign and the beginning of his presidency, when he identified the threat of antisemitism as coming principally from the far right. The gunman in Pittsburgh, who was sentenced to death this summer, was influenced by a proliferation of far-right content on social media.Biden rolled out a strategy to counter antisemitism last May, the first by any presidential administration in US history. A number of US Jewish groups who advised on the strategy urged Biden to take into account the threat of anti-Jewish hatred from the left and other sources as well as the far-right, particularly on campuses, where some Jewish students say they face intimidation from the pro-Palestinian left.“Under my presidency, we will continue to condemn antisemitism at every turn,” Biden said in his statement. “We are implementing the first-ever national strategy to counter Antisemitism. Because hate never goes away, it only hides until it is given just a little oxygen. And as a nation, we must ensure hate is never given any oxygen.”A White House spokesman on Thursday specifically called out some campus pro-Palestinian protests as veering into antisemitism.
Liberate Gaza’: Thousands of Palestinians demonstrate across West Bank-Rallies include expressions of support for Hamas, amid ongoing war in Strip; clashes reported between PA security forces and Palestinians who approached Joseph’s Tomb-By AFP and ToI Staff Today, 3:27 am 3-OCT 28,23
Thousands of Palestinians demonstrated Saturday across the West Bank in solidarity with those in the Gaza Strip, with some expressing support for Hamas amid Israel’s ongoing war against the terror group. In Ramallah, the Palestinian Authority’s seat of government, the crowd chanted slogans including: “liberate Gaza” and “the people want the [Izz ad-Din] al-Qassam Brigades” in reference to the military branch of Hamas.Others waved Hamas flags along with banners representing a range of Palestinian factions.Fakhi Barghouti, 80, said Palestinians in the West Bank “need to do more about the war in Gaza.”Several people refused to answer AFP’s questions, believing that Western and particularly French media coverage of the war was “biased.”Protests were also held in other West Bank cities, including Nablus, where clashes were reported between PA security forces and Palestinians who approached Joseph’s Tomb, regarded by some as the final resting place of the biblical patriarch. pic.twitter.com/ACIIqNWZ5r — Carmel Dangor כרמל דנגור (@carmeldangor) October 27, 2023-Earlier Friday, the Israel Defense Forces confirmed it killed Ayser Mohammad Al-Amer, a field commander in the Palestinian Islamic Jihad’s Jenin wing, during clashes in the Jenin refugee camp overnight. The army also confirmed that it clashed with Palestinian gunmen in the Jenin refugee camp and the city of Qalqilya; Palestinians had reported four killed, including Al-Amer, in the two locations. The army said it returned fire at Palestinians shooting at forces and rioters hurling explosive devices. No injuries were reported on the Israeli side.Troops detained 17 members of the Hamas terror group, as well as 19 other wanted Palestinians, in overnight arrest raids across the West Bank, the IDF said.Since the war in the Gaza Strip began on October 7, troops have arrested some 1,030 wanted Palestinians in the West Bank, including some 670 affiliated with Hamas, according to the military. There have been numerous clashes between IDF forces and Palestinians in the West Ban in recent weeks, and several attempted terror attacks, the IDF says.According to the Palestinian Authority health ministry, 110 West Bank Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces, and in some cases settlers, since October 7.Separately, the IDF said the head of the Central Command, Maj. Gen. Yehuda Fox, signed off on a demolition order against a home owned by Hamas official Saleh al-Arouri, in the town of ‘Arura, near Ramallah.-Protests in Jordan and Iraq-In Jordan on Friday, at least 5,000 people demonstrated in the capital Amman to demand that the kingdom’s peace treaty with Israel be annulled.Jordan was the second Arab state to make peace with Israel in 1994, after Egypt in 1979.AFP journalists said some protesters brandished pictures of US President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron, alongside Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, with the slogan: “Accomplices in crime.”Similar protests took place in Zarqa, Mafraq, Tahila and Aqaba.Demonstrators raise a sign condemning French President Emmanuel Macron, US President Joe Biden, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, during a rally in the Jordanian capital Amman held in solidarity with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, on October 27, 2023, amid the ongoing war between Hamas and Israel. In Iraq, firebrand Shiite cleric Moqtada Sadr demanded that the government close the US embassy in Baghdad in response to Washington’s support for Israel in its war with Hamas.Sadr warned on X, formerly Twitter, that if this does not happen “we will take a different position that we will announce later.”Iraq does not recognize Israel, but the Iran-backed government must also consider its relations with the United States, which has 2,500 soldiers deployed in the country. On October 7, throngs of Hamas-led terrorists poured from Gaza into Israel under the cover of massive rocket fire, killing 1,400 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping some 230 more.In response to the onslaught, Israel launched an offensive aimed at destroying Hamas’s infrastructure, and vowing to eliminate the entire terror group, which rules the Strip. It says it is targeting all areas where Hamas operates, while seeking to minimize civilian casualties. In air and artillery strikes that Israel has carried out the past three weeks, the Hamas-controlled health ministry in Gaza says over 7,300 people have been killed in the Strip. The figures cannot be independently verified and include Palestinian terrorists killed fighting the IDF as well as civilians killed as a result of errant rockets launched by terror groups.Emanuel Fabian contributed to this report.
Israeli ground forces ‘expanding’ activity inside Gaza, ramping up airstrikes — IDF-Internet, phone services collapse in Strip amid intensified operations, which officials stress are not full-scale offensive; Washington says it’s not ‘drawing red lines’ for Israel-By Emanuel Fabian Today, 12:53 am 1-OCT 28,23
The Israeli military ramped up airstrikes in the Gaza Strip on Friday night and said it was expanding ground operations into the coastal enclave following several nights of limited raids.Internet and phone services were down across Gaza amid reports by Palestinians that Israeli ground forces including tanks were operating within the Strip and heavy exchanges of gunfire could be heard.“The Air Force is striking underground targets very significantly,” said IDF Spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari.“In addition to the attacks that we carried out in recent days, ground forces are expanding their activity this evening. The IDF is acting with great force … to achieve the objectives of the war.”For the last two days, IDF infantry forces and tanks have conducted limited operations in the Gaza Strip.Hagari said the IDF will continue to strike Gaza City and surrounding areas in northern Gaza, and renewed his call for Palestinians to evacuate to the Strip’s south.“We are prepared to defend in all arenas. We are acting in order to protect the security interests of the State of Israel,” he said. The Hamas terror group’s military wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, said it was confronting Israeli forces in Gaza and that “violent clashes” were taking place near Beit Hanoun in the northern part of the Palestinian enclave, and Bureij in the center.US and Israeli officials told ABC News that the Israeli ground incursion in Gaza was not the expected large-scale offensive Israel has been threatening for three weeks — aimed to dismantle Hamas following its devastating October 7 onslaught into Israel. On that Saturday morning, some 2,500 terrorists streamed into Israel by land, sea, and air, killing over 1,400 people, a majority of them civilians in their homes and at an outdoor music festival in border communities across southern Israel. Hamas and allied terrorist factions also dragged over 220 hostages — including some 30 children — into the Gaza Strip where they remain captive. An unnamed American source told ABC that the operation Friday was another limited one. And IDF spokesman Peter Lerner said the activity was not the major operation that has been expected since the devastating terror assault. On Friday night, White House National Security spokesman John Kirby repeatedly refused to comment on the expanded activities, and said Washington would not draw “red lines” for Israel.“We’re not drawing red lines for Israel,” Kirby said Friday on a call with reporters. “We’re going to continue to support them” but “since the very beginning we have, and will continue to have, conversations about the manner that they are doing this.”Defense Minister Yoav Gallant told a small group of foreign reporters earlier that Israel expects a long and difficult ground offensive into Gaza soon. It “will take a long time” to dismantle Hamas’ vast network of tunnels, he said, adding that he expected a lengthy phase of lower-intensity fighting as Israel destroys “pockets of resistance.”Hamas had earlier called on world countries to “act immediately” to stop Israel’s response to its October 7 massacre.Israel has vowed to destroy the Palestinian terror organization while minimizing harm to Gaza civilians. On Friday evening, terrorists in Gaza launched a series of rocket barrages into Israel, targeting southern and central Israeli cities. A foreign worker was moderately wounded after a rocket landed in agricultural land near Rishon Lezion, according to medics. In Sderot, a pair of rockets fired from Gaza slammed into a home and an outdoor shelter. Some damage was caused but no one was harmed.Gazan terrorists have launched thousands of rockets at Israel since October 7, killing and wounding dozens, and sending hundreds of thousands running for shelter, and the education of hundreds of thousands of children disrupted as schools remain shut or in a limited format. The Israeli military on Friday night revealed that Hamas was using Gaza City’s Shifa Hospital as a main base of operations, providing visuals and intercepted audio as evidence of the terror organization’s activities.Hagari said Israel has intelligence that there are several tunnels leading to the underground base from outside the hospital so that Hamas officials do not need to enter the hospital to reach it. But Hagari added that there is also an entrance to the underground complex from within one of the wards.Hagari also said Israel has “concrete evidence” that “hundreds of terrorists flooded into the hospital to hide” following the October 7 terror onslaught.Hamas’s internal security also has a command center inside Shifa Hospital, from which it directs rocket fire on Israel and stores weapons, he added.A satellite image issued by the IDF shows what the military says are Hamas command centers located underneath Shifa Hospital in Gaza (IDF) Overnight Thursday-Friday, Israel sent tanks, infantry forces, and Navy commandos into Gaza for a second limited incursion, the Israel Defense Forces said Friday, the second night in a row that forces briefly entered the Strip ahead of the expected full ground offensive. The raid near the Shejaiya neighborhood in eastern Gaza City was carried out by infantry, combat engineering and armored forces, with Israeli Air Force drones and combat helicopters providing air cover, the military said. The IDF said it carried out artillery strikes and airstrikes against sites belonging to the Hamas terror group, including anti-tank guided missile launch sites and command centers.Several Hamas members were also hit by the forces, the IDF said, adding that all the troops left the area after several hours, and that no Israeli injuries were reported.Additionally, the IDF said it killed the commander of Hamas’s West Khan Younis Battalion, Madhat Mubasher, in an overnight airstrike in the Gaza Strip. The IDF said Mubasher “took part in sniper attacks and was responsible for large explosive devices [used] against IDF forces and Israeli towns.”Also overnight, forces of the Israeli Navy’s Shayetet 13 commando unit carried out a raid in the southern Gaza Strip from the sea, the IDF said. The forces destroyed Hamas infrastructure and operated in a compound used by the terror group’s naval commando forces, according to the IDF.Other Navy forces participated in the mission, and all the Shayetet 13 commandos left the area and returned to Israel after the operation, the IDF added.Hamas in a statement Friday claimed to have repelled the Israeli raid from the sea.The IDF has for several weeks been preparing a full-scale incursion aimed at rooting out the Gaza-ruling terror group following its murderous October 7 onslaught in southern Israel. It has pounded the Strip on an unprecedented scale in order to eliminate potential threats to ground troops once the order finally comes. The airstrikes have flattened entire neighborhoods, causing a level of destruction unseen in the last four wars between Israel and Hamas. The IDF said Friday that over the past day, it has carried out more than 250 airstrikes against Hamas sites in the Gaza Strip, with targets including Hamas tunnels, command centers, rocket launching positions, and dozens of operatives. Also Friday, the military said that at least 233 hostages were kidnapped and taken to the Gaza Strip during the devastating assault on October 7.IDF spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said the military has notified the families of 229 hostages that their loved ones are currently being held in the enclave. The number does not include four released hostages — mother and daughter Judith and Natalie Ra’anan, who were freed a week ago, and elderly women Yocheved Lifshitz and Nurit Cooper, freed on Monday night.Hagari said the number is not final as the military continues to investigate new information. However, a member of a Hamas delegation visiting Russia claimed that the terror group still does not know where all the people kidnapped by Palestinian terrorists during their attack are being held. The Hamas official, named as Abu Hamid, claimed in an interview with Russia’s semi-official Kommersant news outlet that the terror group has always been willing to release civilians, but “needs time to find them.” He additionally claimed members of various groups are holding hostages, and that a ceasefire was needed to allow Hamas to carry out its search, find the hostages and then release them. The updated hostage figures from the military came after Gallant on Thursday promised to make “every effort” to return the hostages as he reiterated that a ground operation was looming and vowed to win the war, asserting that the country’s next 75 years largely depend on it.In a primetime televised address, the defense minister said: “We are in decisive moments. This is a war for our home and we will win it. It’s either us or them.”On Wednesday, The New York Times reported that Israel had agreed to a request from the United States to temporarily delay the planned Gaza ground incursion to give Washington more time to deploy additional air defense systems to protect its troops in the region. The US was also reportedly concerned that Israel lacks achievable military goals for its operations in Gaza, leading to fears that the IDF is not yet ready for a ground incursion.Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry says the Israeli strikes have killed over 7,000 people, many of them children. The figures issued by the terror group cannot be independently verified, and are believed to include its own terrorists and gunmen killed in Israel and in Gaza, and the victims of what Israel says are hundreds of errant Palestinian rockets that have landed in the Strip since the war began. Israel says it killed 1,500 Hamas terrorists inside Israel on and after October 7.Agencies and Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.
Hamas’s main operations base is under Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, says IDF-Military charges terror group has several underground complexes under Gaza’s largest hospital, says ‘hundreds of terrorists flooded into hospital to hide’ after Oct. 7 massacres-By Emanuel Fabian and ToI Staff 27 October 2023, 8:53 pm 10
The Israel Defense Forces on Friday said the Hamas terror group’s main base of operations is under Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, providing visuals and intercepted audio as evidence of the terror organization’s activities. In a briefing for reporters of international media outlets, IDF Spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said Hamas has several underground complexes under Shifa — the largest hospital in the Gaza Strip — that are used by the terror group’s leaders to direct attacks against Israel.Hagari said Israel has intelligence that there are several tunnels leading to the underground base from outside the hospital so that Hamas officials do not need to enter the hospital to reach it. But Hagari added that there is also an entrance to the underground complex from within one of the wards.“Right now, terrorists move freely in Shifa Hospital, and other hospitals in Gaza,” Hagari said. The military spokesperson said Israel has “concrete evidence” that “hundreds of terrorists flooded into the hospital to hide” following the October 7 massacre, in which some 2,500 terrorists burst through the border under cover of a deluge of rockets, and rampaged through more than 20 communities near the Gaza Strip. They killed some 1,400 people, the vast majority of them civilians, massacring them in their homes and at an outdoor music festival. They also abducted over 220 people to the Strip as hostages.According to the IDF, Hamas’s internal security also has a command center inside Shifa Hospital, from which it directs rocket fire on Israel and stores weapons. The hospital’s energy infrastructure is also used by Hamas’s underground base, Hagari said, accusing the terror group of using the hospital and its occupants — with 1,500 beds and some 4,000 staff — as human shields. The information on Hamas’s use of the hospital is based on a wide range of intelligence sources collected by the Military Intelligence Directorate and Shin Bet security agency.Hagari said the intel has already been provided to allies.A senior member of the Hamas political bureau, Izzat al-Rishq, said the Israeli military’s allegations were unfounded.“There’s no basis in truth in what the spokesman of the enemy army stated,” Rishq said, accusing Israel of making up the allegations to “pave the way for a new massacre to be committed against our people.”Ambulances crowd the entrance to the emergency ward of the Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City on October 15, 2023 (Dawood NEMER / AFP)Rishq claimed 40,000 Gazans have sought refuge in the hospital as a result of Israel’s aerial bombardment of the Strip, following the terror group’s massive shock assault three weeks ago, and called on Arab and Muslim leaders to “take action to stop the genocide against our people.”“Hamas wages war from hospitals” in Gaza, Hagari told journalists, adding that the terror group was also using fuel stored in hospitals to help carry out its operations.Hamas operates within and hides beneath the largest hospital in Gaza.Their priorities are clear—and the people of Gaza are not among them. pic.twitter.com/7M4ZqjFyYs — Israel Defense Forces (@IDF) October 27, 2023“Terrorists move freely” in Shifa and other hospitals, he said. “Hamas’s use of hospitals is systematic.”“Hamas terrorists operate inside hospitals precisely because they know the IDF distinguishes between terrorists and civilians. Israel targets terrorists, Hamas targets Israeli civilians and Gazan civilians,” Hagari added. The military spokesperson asserted that Hamas is stealing fuel from civilians in Gaza. Israel has blocked the entrance of fuel into the Strip since the war started, so he appeared to be referring to fuel that was already in the Strip.“There is fuel in hospitals in Gaza, and Hamas is using it for its terror infrastructure,” he said, playing a recording that he said was a conversation between a pair of Gazan residents who make the revelation. (@Israel) October 27, 2023-In another conversation aired by the military, a senior Gazan energy official reveals that Hamas currently has at least a million liters of gasoline and possibly more, which it stole from civilian projects and is currently hoarding to power its tunnels networks.Earlier Friday, the commissioner general for the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, denied that any aid was being diverted.“We have solid monitoring mechanisms… UNRWA does not and will not divert any humanitarian aid into the wrong hands,” Lazzarini said. But on October 16, UNRWA indicated that Hamas authorities in Gaza had stolen fuel and medical supplies meant for refugees from its premises. Shortly after posting the claim on X, UNRWA deleted the posts and later asserted that nothing had been looted.Hamas is a plague hiding in a hospital. pic.twitter.com/w1rgBN81TJ — Israel Defense Forces (@IDF) October 27, 2023-Gaza hospitals have been a key feature of the now three-week-long Gaza war, with Hamas on October 17 claiming that an Israeli strike targeted al-Ahli hospital in Gaza City and killed over 500 civilians. The claim was disproven within hours by Israeli and US intelligence, which found that the explosion occurred just outside the hospital, was caused by an errant Islamic Jihad rocket and killed far fewer than 500 people.Since Israel launched retaliatory air and artillery strikes on the day of the attack, at least 7,326 people have been killed in the Gaza Strip, according to figures released by the territory’s Hamas-run health ministry. Those numbers cannot be independently verified and include Palestinian terrorists killed by Israel as well as Palestinian civilians killed by errant rockets launched by terror groups in Gaza.Israel says it killed 1,500 Hamas terrorists inside Israel on and after October 7.
'This is psychological terror by Hamas' -- IDF spokesperson-Israel dismisses ‘rumors’ of progress in indirect hostage negotiations with Hamas
Senior Israeli official says Jerusalem believes terror group dragging out talks to delay IDF ground offensive into Gaza-By ToI Staff and Jacob Magid 27 October 2023, 10:32 pm 2
Israel believes that Hamas has been dragging out hostage negotiations as a tactic to delay a ground offensive by the Israeli military into the Gaza Strip, a senior Israeli official told The Times of Israel on Friday. The official said that despite leaks from Egyptian and Qatari officials over the past few days purporting significant progress in the talks to release a large number of hostages, no breakthroughs currently appear to be imminent.During its shock terror assault on Israel on October 7, Hamas terrorists killed over 1,400 people, a majority of them civilians, during raids on over 20 border communities near the Gaza Strip, slaughtering entire families in their homes and some 260 at an outdoor music festival. Terrorists also took over 200 hostages, including women, children and elderly people, dragging them into the Gaza Strip where they remain captive. The military said Friday that Israel has informed the families of 229 people, Israelis and dual nationals, who were taken hostage by Hamas and allies terrorist factions.Hamas has released four hostages since its October 7 terror massacre, including an American-Israeli mother and daughter, and two elderly Israeli women, in a deal brokered by Qatar, which hosts both a US military base and Hamas’s political bureau. The country is one of Hamas’s main backers, transferring hundreds of millions of dollars to the terror group annually.Earlier Friday, the Qatar-based Al Jazeera network reported that talks to release a large group of hostages were advancing and would include a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. The report cannot be verified or corroborated.Separately, CNN also reported that negotiations were ongoing, citing diplomatic sources. “Negotiations are going very well,” the source told CNN. “There are issues still remaining, but talks are ongoing, and we remain hopeful.”But in a briefing Friday evening, IDF Spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari dismissed such reports, calling them rumors.“I suggest not to pay attention to the rumors, this is psychological terror by Hamas,” he said. “Do not give in to its manipulations.Israel has publicly insisted that the hostages must be released unconditionally. Hamas has reportedly been seeking the entry of fuel into Gaza, which Israel has banned, as well as the release of security prisoners from Israeli jails along with a ceasefire.CNN also reported Friday that US Assistant Secretary of State for Near East Affairs Barbara Leaf was in the Qatari capital Doha for meetings with Qatar’s leadership, citing a person familiar with the matter. Her presence in Qatar came a day after the Washington Post reported that the US and Qatar have agreed to reevaluate the Gulf monarchy’s relationship with Hamas after Doha completes its role in freeing the hostages taken by the terror group. The agreement was reached during a recent meeting between US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, and is an attempt by Washington to balance its short-term objective of freeing as many hostages as possible against the long-term strategy of choking off Hamas’s support, the report said.On Friday, Ynet reported that Qatari Ambassador to the US Meshal bin Hamad al Thani has spoken with an Israeli man whose wife and three children are being held hostage by Hamas in Gaza.Avichai Brodutch, who has been staging a one-man vigil outside Defense Ministry headquarters in Tel Aviv, thanked the envoy for Qatar’s efforts to free the hostages, according to the report.Brodutch is the bereft husband of Hagar, 40, and father of Ofri, 10, Yuval, 8 and Uriah, 4 who disappeared along with Avigayil Idan, whose parents Roee and Smadar Idan were murdered on October 7 in Kibbutz Kfar Aza. He’s been holding a vigil across the street from Israeli army headquarters in Tel Aviv since.Brodutch reportedly asked al Thani to keep up the intensive contact to free his family and the 30-odd other children kidnapped by terrorists on October 7, Ynet said. The talks were the first known contact between Qatar and Israeli civilians seeking the return of their loved ones.Reports indicate that the Israeli point man on the issue, Gal Hirsch, has been largely sidelined. There has been no confirmation of the talks from Qatar. On Thursday, the families of the hostages held a press conference to protest what they charged was government inaction and failure to update them on the efforts to secure the release of their loved ones. They warned that their patience had run out.

Hamas hails measure, calls for its immediate implementation-UN resolution urging immediate Gaza ceasefire passes with overwhelming majority
Jerusalem denounces General Assembly’s approval of ‘despicable’ Jordanian initiative that makes no mention of Hamas, vows to move forward with goal of toppling terror group-By Jacob Magid Today, 1:48 am-OCT 28,23
A resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, which made no mention of Hamas, was overwhelmingly passed by the United Nations General Assembly on Friday, drawing praise from the Islamist terror group and condemnation from Israel. The resolution called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the release of all civilians, the protection of civilians and international institutions, and ensuring the safe passage of humanitarian aid into the Strip. The initiative was nonbinding but highlighted the overwhelming international support for the Palestinians amid Israel’s military campaign in response to the October 7 Hamas onslaught.Israel has rejected calls for a ceasefire in Gaza, saying that it is committed to toppling Hamas to prevent another mass assault like the one that took place three weeks ago, when more than 1,400 people were killed. Gaza terrorists also took some 230 people — mostly civilians — as hostage into the enclave, releasing four of them since. The US has also rejected calls for a ceasefire, suggesting that it would amount to a victory for Hamas. It has, however, begun suggesting that “humanitarian pauses” be considered to allow more humanitarian aid into Gaza and to ensure safe passage of civilians looking to flee the areas that the IDF is bombing most intensively in its aerial campaign across the Strip.Israel insists it’s only targeting Hamas terrorists and infrastructure but many civilians are believed to be among those killed. The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza claims roughly 7,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israel, but those numbers cannot be independently verified and include Palestinian terrorists killed fighting the IDF as well as civilians killed as a result of errant rockets launched by terror groups. The results of a UN General Assembly vote on a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza on October 27, 2023.One-hundred and twenty countries voted in favor of the non-binding resolution introduced by Jordan, while just 14 — United States, Austria, Croatia, Czechia, Fiji, Guatemala, Hungary, Israel, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay and Tonga — voted against it.Forty-five countries abstained, including Australia, Canada, Finland, Germany, Greece, India, Iraq, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Poland, South Korea, Sweden, Tunisia, Ukraine and the UK.Canada sought to have an amendment added to the resolution to include a condemnation of Hamas and a majority of members backed the proposal, but it fell short of the two-thirds majority needed to be adopted. Eighty-eight countries voted for the amendment, 55 voted against and 33 abstained.Jordan’s ambassador to the UN called the amendment an effort to “whitewash” Israeli “atrocities” in Gaza.Israel fumed after the vote, with Foreign Minister Eli Cohen decrying the “despicable” resolution and insisting that “Israel intends to eliminate Hamas just as the world dealt with the Nazis and ISIS.”UN Ambassador Gilad Erdan angrily dismissed the resolution, saying Israel would continue to defend itself.“This is a dark day for the UN and for mankind,” Erdan said, vowing Israel will use “every means” in fighting Hamas.“Today is a day that will go down as infamy. We have all witnessed that the UN no longer holds even one ounce of legitimacy or relevance,” he added.Hamas welcomed the passage of the resolution and called for its immediate implementation, including the clause calling for the entry of fuel and relief materials for civilians in the Gaza Strip. The rival Palestinian Authority’s foreign ministry also welcomed the resolution, saying that as Israel’s campaign “reaches a new peak of brutality,” there is “a solid international position rejecting Israel’s unhinged aggression.”In a speech ahead of the vote, US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield panned the Jordanian resolution for failing to mention Hamas.“It is outrageous that this resolution fails to name the perpetrators of the October 7th terrorist attacks: Hamas,” Thomas Greenfield said. She also noted that the resolution doesn’t include the word “hostages,” though, it did “call for the immediate release of all civilians, demanding their safety, well-being and humane treatment in compliance with international law.”The US envoy clarified that Palestinian civilians, UN personnel and humanitarian workers still must be protected, even though the Biden administration does not support a ceasefire. She then highlighted the story of Al Jazeera’s Gaza bureau chief Wael al-Dahdouh, whose wife, two children and grandchild were killed in an Israeli airstrike earlier this week.“We must not become numb to the pain and the suffering of people like Wael Al-Dahdouh… My heart breaks for Wael. My heart breaks for all -– all of the innocent civilians who are caught up in this crisis,” she says.Pakistan’s UN Ambassador Munir Akran drew loud applause when he said the Arab-drafted resolution deliberately didn’t condemn or mention Israel or name any other party. “If Canada was really equitable,” Akram said, “it would agree either to name everybody — both sides who are guilty of having committed crimes — or it would not name either as we chose.”On Thursday, during the first day of the debate on the resolution, nearly every speaker backed the Jordanian draft resolution, except for Erdan who told the assembly, “A cease-fire means giving Hamas time to rearm itself, so they can massacre us again.”Erdan played a video of a Hamas terrorist trying to decapitate a Thai worker with a garden hoe during the October 7 onslaught in southern Israel, in a speech that was received with silence. His Palestinian counterpart Riyad Mansour, however, earned loud applause when he finished his address, highlighting the global mood of the moment.“If you do not stop it for all those who were killed, stop it for all those whose lives we can still save,” Mansour said.Agencies contributed to this report.Police:
Don’t answer calls from unknown foreign numbers amid potential hack attempt-Authorities say calls flooding Israelis’ phones over past day appear designed to cause panic, possibly hack WhatsApp accounts-By ToI Staff Today, 2:18 am -0CT 28,23
Police and the National Cyber Directorate said Friday that Israelis should not answer WhatsApp calls coming from unknown numbers overseas, warning they could be part of a phone-hacking attempt.Police said the calls flooding Israelis’ phones were designed to cause panic and harass Israelis, warning they may also be an attempt to hack their WhatsApp accounts. At least some of the calls, which also included video calls, have come from US phone numbers.“We recommend not answering them and not calling them back,” police said. The cyber directorate noted that answering a call will not lead to a phone being hacked or damaged. It added that the issue has been reported to Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company.Authorities asked that WhatsApp users set their privacy settings to hush calls from unknown numbers, block and report the numbers making the calls, and avoid clicking on links sent from unknown numbers.A number of Israeli companies have faced cyberattacks amid the war in Gaza, which was triggered by the Hamas terror group’s deadly onslaught in southern Israel three weeks ago.
