This includes 1 case in British Columbia, 4 in Alberta, 9 in Ontario and 98 in Quebec.Among cases for whom information is available, age ranged from 20 to 63 years. All cases to date are male and the majority report having sexual contact with men. However, this virus can spread to anyone through close contact with an infected person.The National Microbiology Lab, or NML, is also performing confirmatory testing on a number of other suspected cases. Therefore, we are preparing for more confirmed cases in the coming days and weeks.In addition, the NML is conducting sequencing of the virus causing Canadian cases. Early result indicate that cases in Canada are related to the international outbreak. Further work is being done to better understand chains of transmission domestically, in support of the ongoing outbreak investigations.Working together with provinces and territories, our primary goal is to contain the outbreak. This means rapidly stopping chains of transmission to prevent the establishment of monkeypox in Canada, and protect public health and health care in Canada. We are also focused on protecting those at the highest risk of severe outcomes, including immunocompromised individuals, pregnant people, and children under 12 years of age.In support of this approach, today, the National Advisory Committee on Immunization, or NACI, released new recommendations for the use of Imvamune, a Health Canada approved vaccine for immunization against monkeypox.After reviewing the data on the current status of the monkeypox outbreak and evidence on the safety and protection offered by the Imvamune vaccine, NACI recommends that a single dose of Imvamune may be offered to individuals with high-risk exposures of a probable or confirmed case of Monkeypox, or within a setting where transmission is happening, ideally within 4 days of exposure.Affected provinces are currently implementing vaccination strategies based on their local epidemiology and PHAC is currently working with manufacturers to ensure sufficient vaccine supply moving forward, and planning with partners to ensure we are equipped to respond effectively to the evolving situation. Israel regularly coordinates many of its airstrikes in Syria with US officials, and in some cases awaits American approval for its raids, The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday.The paper, citing unnamed US officials, said the secret collaboration is focused on eastern Syria, and specifically the area of the al-Tanf American military base, near Syria’s borders with Iraq and Jordan.The US base is in a prime location for Iranian interests — located near a highway connecting Iraq and southern Syria. Iran-backed forces see it as a viable supply route.The coordination is meant to prevent Israel’s actions from interfering with US efforts against the Islamic State group in the region, the report said.Israel conducts airstrikes in Syria primarily to contain Iran’s attempts to transfer weapons and other support to its proxies in the country and to the Lebanon-based Hezbollah terror group.The newspaper said Israel chooses its targets independently and does not receive approval from the US for all of its airstrikes in Syria. On Taiwan's tiny Penghu islands, the missile bases that sit next to white-sand beaches and bustling fish markets are a visceral reminder of the constant threat of attack from China.Despite the huge military discrepancy between the two sides, many analysts believe Taiwan's location, inhospitable terrain and US support mean China would find a full-scale invasion extremely hard -- and possibly too costly to countenance.Communist China and Taiwan split at the end of a civil war in 1949 with the losing Kuomintang forces retreating to the island. But Beijing insists now-democratically run Taiwan is part of its territory, and that it will one day re-take it, by force if necessary.Recent record Chinese fighter jet incursions into Taiwan's air defence identification zone and increasingly aggressive rhetoric under President Xi Jinping have raised fears China might contemplate acting on that pledge sooner rather than later.The Chinese defence ministry last week said it would "not hesitate to start a war" to stop Taiwan becoming independent.One US admiral has said an attack could come by 2027, the centenary of China's People's Liberation Army (PLA)."If we were to go head to head militarily, we don't stand a single chance," retired admiral Lee Hsi-min, who was head of Taiwan's armed forces until 2019, told AFP bluntly.But Russia's failure to quickly overrun Ukraine stands as a cautionary tale to Beijing, while simultaneously providing Taipei with both tactical blueprints and inspiration on how to hold off a much larger enemy."Our soldiers here are all Taiwanese and will be fighting to defend their homeland," said Chen Ing-jin, a Penghu historian and architect. "That makes a difference. Just look at Ukraine."- 'A defender's dream' -Taiwan's biggest advantage is its geography.Amphibious assaults are exceedingly difficult and if China was to invade Taiwan -- and crucially hold it -- Beijing would need to move hundreds of thousands of troops as well as equipment across the Taiwan Strait.Even at its narrowest point the strait is 130 kilometres (80 miles) and weather conditions are notoriously unforgiving with two monsoon seasons.That leaves just two brief "windows of attack" -- May to July and October -- for such a large-scale operation, according to a US Naval War College report.In addition, studded into the waters are outlying islands like the Penghu chain -- bristling with radar and missiles pointing straight out into the strait.With the likely early warning, and the weaponry Taipei has at its disposal, the PLA would probably incur high losses even in that first stage of transit, said James Char, an Associate Research Fellow at Singapore's S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies.And while the small, flat outlying islands might in the end prove easy for Beijing to subdue, on Taiwan's main island, the opposite applies.The coastal terrain there "is a defender's dream come true", according to Ian Easton, author of "The Chinese Invasion Threat".He and his colleagues estimate that Taiwan only has 14 small beaches suitable for landing, and even they are bordered by mountains, cliffs or dense urban infrastructure."Landing on Taiwan is only part of the problem," Bonny Lin, director of the China Power Project at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), told AFP.Progress through Taiwan's wetlands, mountains and densely populated urban areas will require a huge range of different combat skills and weapons."How is it going to sustain those forces once they're in position and advancing -- how is it going to do the logistics?" Lin asked.- Weapons -China has spent hundreds of billions of dollars upgrading its military capabilities over the past decade, and its statistical dominance over Taiwan is enormous.The PLA has over one million ground force personnel to Taiwan's 88,000, 6,300 tanks compared with 800, and 1,600 fighter jets to 400, according to the US Department of Defence.Washington also estimates Beijing has the world's largest Navy by ship number. A recent US Naval War College paper described those ships as "increasingly sophisticated, capable vessels".But many experts, including both Char and Lin, question whether they are yet capable enough.Atlantic Council senior advisor Harlan Ullman put it more forcefully in a February paper: "China simply lacks the military capability and capacity to launch a full-scale amphibious invasion of Taiwan for the foreseeable future".In the meantime, Taiwan has plans to counter China's might in numbers, with retired admiral Lee highlighting asymmetric warfare -- an emphasis on mobility and precision attacks -- an approach US officials are reportedly encouraging.Lee pointed to the success of the Ukrainian mobile missile launcher that sank Russia's Black Sea flagship, the Moskva.Taiwan has built up stockpiles of mobile missile batteries and shoulder-launched weapons but he said they needed lots more.- US support -The factor that preoccupies Beijing most is who else might get involved in the conflict, Chinese military expert Song Zhongping told AFP."The difficulty of liberating Taiwan lies in the potential intervention of the United States. It's the biggest obstacle for the PLA to clear," he said.The United States officially maintains a "strategic ambiguity" on whether it would intervene militarily in the event of an invasion. But it supplies Taiwan with military hardware and President Joe Biden has said multiple times that Washington would intervene.The "extent, depth and breadth" of US and other allies' involvement would greatly determine how any conflict would play out, said Song.Some wargame scenarios see the PLA taking out US bases in the Pacific to kneecap its ability to respond. Washington would be heavily reliant on aircraft carriers operating far from home.To counter that threat China has prioritised the development of hypersonic "carrier killer" missiles and militarised multiple atolls in the disputed South China Sea.But an attack on US forces could provoke a more determined backlash and draw American allies into a global conflict.Even without a military intervention, Char said the threat of economic sanctions like those placed on Russia would give the Chinese leadership pause for thought.- Political willpower -The question of whether China would be prepared to cause mass casualties with an invasion, while risking its domestic and international image, is a fundamental one."You need to let China know that it will suffer tremendous losses, and even then it may still not be able to occupy Taiwan," said Lee."So that China will think that the best way to resolve the Taiwan problem is by peaceful means."There are a range of other options short of all-out invasion Beijing could use to bring Taipei to its knees -- including a Taiwan Strait blockade, annexation of the outlying islands, or incapacitation of military and cyber systems."China might come up with other formulations or creative diplomatic strategic solutions to declare unification with Taiwan without actually having achieved that," CSIS' Lin said.Chinese analyst Song said Beijing has made its invasion trigger clear."The timing depends on the behaviour of the Taiwanese separatists and if they insist on advocating for Taiwan's independence," he said.The island's 23 million people have increasingly embraced a distinct Taiwanese identity and President Tsai Ing-wen, who views the island as a sovereign state, has won two elections.The next presidential elections are due in 2024 and Ukraine's fate has only further hardened attitudes towards China.In a survey conducted in May, 61.4 percent of respondents said they were willing to take up arms in the event of an invasion.The decision ultimately rests with Xi Jinping, the most authoritarian Chinese leader since Mao Zedong, who has been central to the rising fears that China will invade Taiwan.Xi is on the cusp of securing an unprecedented third term this year. And since he came to power, Char said, "there's been a total shift from the previous mantra of peace and development" in China's behaviour in the region.Instead, he added, Xi has pushed the mantra "accomplish something magnificent and great".In a landmark 2019 speech on Taiwan, Xi said unification was "an inevitable requirement for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese people".

Severe Weather Warnings issued for Toronto and southern Ontario-Southern Ontario has been issued Wind and Heavy Rainfall Warnings by Environment Canada. Heavy rains are expected tonight and winds gusting as high as 90 km/h are expected on Saturday afternoon into the evening.

Earlier today, Toronto along with most of southern Ontario was issued heavy rainfall warnings starting tonight and continuing into Saturday with rainfall amounts of 20 to 40 mm. Now on top of the rain comes high wind gusts up to 90 km/h, so those considering outdoor activities like putting up Christmas lights or going for a hike, skate or stroll, may want to reconsider or get out there earlier in the day before the high winds sweep through.The areas in red are expected to receive high winds and heavy rains with freezing rain falling in northerly areas.With all the rain making its way towards us, apparently a result of a strengthening low pressure system tracking northeast across the Great Lakes on Saturday, Environment Canada warns that heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.On top of the heavy rain, the wind gusts come courtesy of a cold front will sweep through southern Ontario Saturday afternoon and evening.Of course the high winds mean utility outages could possibly occur along with damage to buildings, such as to roof shingles and windows. Researchers from Western University's Northern Tornadoes Project are heading to Belleville and Mallorytown on Friday to assess damage after a line of severe thunderstorms moved through eastern Ontario on Thursday afternoon.Belleville Police said they received "an overwhelming number of calls and reports" about the storm, starting at about 3:15 p.m. ET Thursday.Many of the reports included live hydro wires laying across roads, houses and vehicles, trees obstructing roadways and driveways, damage to homes and vehicles and dangerous conditions," police wrote in a news release issued Friday.No deaths or serious injuries were reported.Northern Tornadoes Project researchers will be conducting damage surveys in and around Belleville and Mallorytown to find out whether a downburst or tornadoes were responsible.The City of Belleville said Friday that Bridge Street East at Plaza Square and Front Street at Pinnacle Street remain closed due to damage. The dog park at East Zwick's Park will remain closed until staff clear downed trees.Elexicon Energy, which provides power in Belleville, reported a number of outages throughout the city Friday morning, affecting thousands of customers.Hydro One is also dealing with outages affecting about 1,500 customers throughout the region.Elexicon Energy was reporting several power outages affecting thousands of customers in Belleville, Ont., on Friday morning after a severe thunderstorm passed through at about 3 p.m. ET Thursday. Study: World’s first cultivated fruit trees planted 7,000 years ago in Jordan Valley-Analysis of charcoal from Tel Tsaf dig reveals olive and fig tree wood, indicating first examples of orchards in an advanced, wealthy society-By Sue Surkes-16 June 2022, 6:01 am

The first domestication of fruit trees anywhere in the world took place some 7,000 years ago in the Jordan Valley, according to a joint study by Tel Aviv University and Jerusalem’s Hebrew University.The researchers reached their conclusions after analyzing charcoal remains at the Chalcolithic Tel Tsaf site in the Jordan Valley and finding wood from olive and fig trees. Olive trees do not grow naturally in the area.Dr. Dafna Langgut, head of Tel Aviv’s Laboratory of Archaeobotany and Ancient Environments, which specializes in microscopic identification of plant remains, said it was possible to identify trees by their anatomic structure even if they had been burned down to charcoal.“Wood was the ‘plastic’ of the ancient world,” she said. “It was used for construction, for making tools and furniture, and as a source of energy. That’s why identifying tree remnants found at archaeological sites, such as charcoal from hearths, is a key to understanding what kinds of trees grew in the natural environment at the time, and when humans began to cultivate fruit trees.”Langgut’s analysis of the charcoal from Tel Tsaf found locally native trees, but also olive and fig.“Olive trees grow in the wild in the land of Israel, but they do not grow in the Jordan Valley,” she said. “This means that someone brought them there intentionally — took the knowledge and the plant itself to a place that is outside of its natural habitat.”“In archaeobotany, this is considered indisputable proof of domestication, which means that we have here the earliest evidence of the olive’s domestication anywhere in the world.”Langgut also identified remnants of branches belonging to the fig tree, which did grow naturally in the Jordan Valley.As the fig tree had little value for firewood or working into tools or furniture, she concluded that the branches resulted from pruning, a method still used today to increase a fruit tree’s yield.The charcoal remnants were collected by Prof. Yosef Garfinkel of Hebrew University’s Institute of Archaeology who directs the excavations at Tel Tsaf.“Tel Tsaf was a large prehistoric village in the central Jordan Valley, south of Beit Shean, inhabited between 7,200 and 6,700 years ago,” Garfinkel explained.“Large houses with courtyards were discovered at the site, each with several granaries for storing crops. Storage capacities were up to 20 times greater than any single family’s calorie consumption, so clearly these were caches for storing great wealth.”“The wealth of the village was manifested in the production of elaborate pottery, painted with remarkable skill. In addition, we found articles brought from afar: pottery of the Ubaid culture from Mesopotamia, obsidian from Anatolia, a copper awl (a small pointed tool used for piercing holes, especially in leather) from the Caucasus, and more,” he said.Langgut and Garfinkel were not surprised to discover that the inhabitants of Tel Tsaf were the first in the world to intentionally grow olive and fig trees, since growing fruit trees is evidence of luxury, and this site is known to have been exceptionally wealthy, the joint university press release said.“The domestication of fruit trees is a process that takes many years, and therefore befits a society of plenty, rather than one that struggles to survive,” said Langgut.“Trees yield fruit only three to four years after being planted. Since groves of fruit trees require a substantial initial investment and then live on for a long time, they have great economic and social significance in terms of owning land and bequeathing it to future generations — features that suggest the beginnings of a complex society.”“Moreover, it’s quite possible that the residents of Tel Tsaf traded in products derived from the fruit trees, such as olives, olive oil, and dried figs, which have a long shelf life. Such products may have enabled long-distance trade that led to the accumulation of material wealth, and possibly even taxation — initial steps in turning the locals into a society with a socioeconomic hierarchy supported by an administrative system,” she said.Langgut said that in addition to the evidence of early fruit tree cultivation, they had also discovered some of the earliest examples of stamps, suggesting the beginnings of administrative procedures.“As a whole, the findings indicate wealth, and early steps toward the formation of a complex multilevel society, with the class of farmers supplemented by classes of clerks and merchants,” she said.The latest research was published in May in the peer-reviewed journal Scientific Reports from the publishers of Nature.
