The electroluminescent light used in fingerprint scanners from Integrated Biometrics for print capture kills the virus that causes COVID-19, a University of Missouri laboratory has confirmed.Integrated Biometrics EVP of Solutions David Gerulski announced a collaboration between IB and the University of Missouri’s Laboratory for Infectious Disease Research during an ID4Africa livecast in 2020. Drs. Paul Anderson and Jeffrey Whyte conducted the research.They tested a fingerprint scanner made by IB and featuring its Light Emitting Sensor (LES). The electroluminescent film killed more than 90 percent of coronavirus traces deposited by a user over the course of the two-second touch needed for accurate biometric identification. Covid Vaccines Increase Menstrual Bleeding Risk by Up to 41%, BMJ Study Finds – But the Authors Downplay it-by Thorsteinn Siglaugsson | Daily Sceptic-May 9th 2023, 4:10 am

I have previously written about a tendency by medical study authors to downplay their results if they don’t conform with the official narrative regarding the COVID-19 vaccines.A study done in Iceland and published last summer found that double-vaccinated individuals were 42% more likely to become reinfected than others. But in their conclusions the authors called this just a “slightly higher” probability.Now, a new study is out, published in the BMJ, that deals with female menstruation problems following vaccination. Nothing to worry about, according to mainstream media reporting. Indeed, in their conclusions the authors say:Weak and inconsistent associations were observed between SARS-CoV-2 vaccination and healthcare contacts for bleeding in women who are postmenopausal, and even less evidence was recorded of an association for menstrual disturbance or bleeding in women who were premenopausal. These findings do not provide substantial support for a causal association between SARS-CoV-2 vaccination and healthcare contacts related to menstrual or bleeding disorders.No reason to worry – really? Let’s take a look at the results section now: 2,580,007 (87.6%) of 2,946,448 women received at least one SARS-CoV-2 vaccination and 1,652,472 (64.0%) 2,580,007 of vaccinated women received three doses before the end of follow-up. The highest risks for bleeding in women who were postmenopausal were observed after the third dose, in the 1-7 days risk window (hazard ratio 1.28 (95% confidence interval 1.01 to 1.62)) and in the 8-90 days risk window (1.25 (1.04 to 1.50)). The impact of adjustment for covariates was modest. Risk of postmenopausal bleeding suggested a 23-33% increased risk after 8-90 days with BNT162b2 [Pfizer] and mRNA-1273 [Moderna] after the third dose, but the association with ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 [AstraZeneca] was less clear. For menstrual disturbance or bleeding in women who were premenopausal, adjustment for covariates almost completely removed the weak associations noted in the crude analyses.So, actually significant risk for postmenopausal even after adjustments, but for premenopausal the “weak associations” were removed after adjustment for covariates. Why those huge adjustments? Before adjustment they found statistically significant increases of up to 44% – but that top figure was ‘adjusted’ away to just 4% (see Table 3). Yet even after these heroic adjustments there was still a 25% increase in menstrual disturbance following the first dose. Anyhow, let’s look at the actual numbers by product for postmenopausal.First Pfizer: adjusted risk (right-hand column) is 1.41 or 41% higher than the unvaccinated after 1-7 days from the third dose and 1.23 or 23% higher after 8-90 days. Both are statistically significant. “Weak and inconsistent?” Really?Now for Moderna: adjusted risk is 1.33 or 33% higher than unvaccinated after 1-7 days from first dose and also 8-90 days after the third (the latter is statistically significant). Again, “weak and inconsistent”?Finally AstraZeneca: adjusted risk is 1.24 or 24% higher than the unvaccinated 1-7 days after the first dose and 1.21 or 21% higher than unvaccinated after the second (though neither result is statistically significant).Last October, the European Medicines Agency finally recommended adding menstrual problems to the already long list of COVID-19 vaccine side-effects. It was about time, after the flood of reports from women. The results of the new study reinforce those concerns, as shown above.The question that remains is why the glaring discrepancy between the actual results and the authors’ conclusions?The authors know full well that most journalists neither read nor understand scientific studies; they know how their highest ideal of verification is appeal to authority (‘the authors say, therefore it is true’). Vietnamese subscribers of social media may soon be required by law to verify their identity before logging in. According to Reuters, the rule will apply to both national and foreign-run platforms, including popular sites like Facebook and YouTube and cover individuals and organizations.Some providers require digital ID verification in Vietnam, but it could be all of them by the end of the year as part of the proposed Telecommunications Law Amendment. Its purported targets are scammers, disinformation campaigns and criminal activity that can be conducted anonymously across borders via social media. Law enforcement will have the ability to track and monitor users and block unverified accounts.In an authoritarian country that ranks poorly on freedom of expression, critics worry that the law gives the government too much control over people’s online activity. The BBC quotes Human Rights Watch as saying that the mandatory identity verification system gives Vietnam’s government undue leverage over transnational corporations, and “is likely lead to violations of the rights to freedom of expression, association, and privacy.”Human rights groups have already raised concerns about the autocratic nation’s recent crackdown on fake news, Decree 53, saying it is a smokescreen for tighter government control. Vietnam’s leaders have implemented biometrics in passports and at airports. They also want foreign firms to store their Vietnamese customers’ data locally, and to have a physical presence in the country by October.As technology like AI and deepfakes present new risks, and the machinations of fraud and disinformation become more complex, regulators across the globe are working to find ways to stay ahead of the changes, through policy and regulation. Hundreds of biometric visas have already been issued by different diplomatic services of Cameroon since the online application system went live on May 1.The country’s embassy in Belgium said it issued more than one hundred visas within two days after the system rolled out, according to information from the Foreign Ministry in Yaounde.Ahead of the launch, Foreign Minister Mbella Mbella, in a briefing on April 25, explained the purpose and functionalities of the biometric visa system, saying it is the first step in a series of government efforts aimed at improving the country’s diplomatic machinery by aligning it with cutting-edge international best practices in the domain of visa issuance.“Cameroon is writing a new page in its history. If things go on as planned, from May 1, applicants will be able to get their entry visa into Cameroon within a period of 72 hours upon submission of the online application,” said Mbella Mbella at the briefing.He also explained the category of visas available for long and short visits and their fees, which have seen an increase from the previous visa regime, in line with the prescriptions of the 2023 state budget.Short-stay visas have a validity of six months while long-stay ones are valid for 12 months, costing between 100,000 Central African francs (US$167) and XAF 200,000 ($334) depending on the type (either ordinary or express). Express visas are issued within 24 hours.The government official also explained that the new system has been designed in a flexible way to deliver secure visa stickers. The process is fast, efficient and cuts wait time and other procedural bottlenecks, he added.In a previous government communication, Mbella Mbella had explained how the system works and the various stages involved in the application process.Impact Palmarès R&D SAS is the Cote d’Ivoire-based company running the system under a ten-year contract on a Public-Private Partnership basis. It is reported that per the contract terms, the company earns 30 percent of the fee paid for each visa issued.Since the system went live, the Foreign Ministry has been running an awareness campaign on its official social media pages on how the system works. It publishes short messages explaining the online application process to applicants, and calling on them to guard against cybercriminals who may try to create a prototype system.

The government of Taiwan is facing a hefty lawsuit from an unnamed vendor that claims it lost money when the national digital ID program was suspended over privacy and security concerns.According to Taiwan News, the unspecified contractor is asking for NT$526 million (approximately US$17 million) in compensation, for costs that include equipment purchases, venue fees, maintenance and air conditioning. The country’s Interior Ministry says it intends to retool the eID program and the Central Engraving and Printing Plant, which handles contracting, is handling the case. But the lawsuit could end up costing taxpayers as much as NT$1 billion ($33 million).Taiwan announced its eID program in 2018, projecting it to cost NT$4.89 billion ($160 million) over 10 years. Cards were due in 2020, following a trial period in Hsinchu City. The launch was later pushed to July 2021. The plan reportedly was well received by the public, with a majority of citizens in favor of replacing printed cards with digital IDs. But Covid put the program on pause during which a rash of concerns surfaced about the potential for data breaches and vulnerability to cyberattacks.Plan dogged by privacy and security fears-Among the questions that have plagued the eID program focus on its design, the amount and type of information that should be displayed or disclosed and who would manage collected data. Thornier still are concerns about national data security and foreign surveillance.Central Engraving previously got into trouble when the winner of its digital ID contract, Teco Electric & Machinery Co. Ltd., was alleged to have falsified its ISO 14298 certificate and illegally subcontracted card production to foreign firms that had connections to China. That could expose the biometric data of millions of Taiwanese to a hostile government. The agency denied the claims, and Teco released a statement asserting the legality of its bid and subcontracting processes.-Program suspended indefinitely, negotiations continueA timeline for the suspended electronic ID program has yet to be released, but privacy watchdogs are pushing for new legislation that requires stronger data protection.Meanwhile, government officials will hold their latest round of negotiations on the pending lawsuit this week, following four previous sessions that failed to yield an agreement.

The European Central Bank is inviting experts in identification and authentication to contribute to the development of rules for the digital euro.A ‘workstream’ is being set up to establish identification and authentication requirements for the digital currency, with the goal of enabling best-in-class user experience and security. Impact assessments for various existing approaches to identification and authentication will also be carried out.The EU’s planned digital currency is expected to be stored in the EU Digital Identity Wallet, with support for peer-to-peer transactions.The Chair of the Rulebook Development Group is setting up several dedicated workstreams to support the draft digital euro scheme rulebook, according to the announcement.Market participants and Eurosystem (EU monetary authority) representatives will be chosen from among candidates nominated by stakeholder associations to provide expertise in strong customer authentication (SCA), digital identity initiatives, and implementing customer identity and access management (CIAM) solutions. Candidates proficient in English are sought.Remote meetings will be held frequently over a two-month period starting this May. Participants are expected to take part in all meetings, and contribute to the project deliverables.Candidates are asked to submit a CV detailing their experience in identification and authentication, with responses to four related questions, by May 22, 2023. As the European Parliament prepares to vote on the landmark Artificial Intelligence Act this month, its members are still negotiating bans and high-risk judgments for predictive policing, emotion recognition and biometrics in public spaces.Lawmakers are already expecting pushback from European Union member states and their local police forces over a proposal to ban certain AI uses from security and policing roles, including facial recognition in public spaces.But criticism may come from more than member states. Some members of parliament (MEPs) are not keen on all of the proposed bans, according to EU Observer.Among the restive factions are the center-conservative European People’s Party and Renew Europe, and liberal lawmakers including Romania MEP Drago? Tudorache, who, along with Italy socialist Brando Benifei, leads the committee conducting AI Act passage negotiations.Bans are viewed more favorably by the Greens and socialists.Among the topics being negotiated by Tudorache and Benifei’s committee involves supervision policies governing police agencies that use biometric recognition.The presumed final Parliament vote on the AI Act draft will take place May 11. Tudorache reportedly told the EU Observer last week that he would be holding his breath “until the last second.”If the vote is successful and the Parliament adopts it, the Council of the European Union, which represents member states, and parliamentarians are expected to start negotiating the final text of the legislation in a trialogue with the European Commission.The Council adopted a common position on issues including biometrics in public last December. It has stopped short of an outright ban on AI for policing and security.Group wants AI Act tech standards panels to add human rights experts-Civil society groups have generally welcomed the parliament’s first draft of the act but others with human rights organization Article 19 have called for more attention to another part of AI legislation — the committees setting technical standards for high-risk AI.Article 19 includes organizations such as European Digital Rights, Access Now, Algorithm Watch, Amnesty International and others. The Nigeria office of the United Nations children’s fund (UNICEF) says it is working with local authorities in Bauchi State to issue birth certificates to 1,080,984 children of five years or younger this year.According to reports in the local media, the target is prompted by a survey which showed that 61.7 percent of all children in the north-eastern state were not registered at birth in 2021.At a recent planning meeting to discuss ways of scaling up birth registration in the state, an official of the UNICEF field office in Bauchi Dr. Tushar Rane underlined the importance of birth registration for every child.“Birth registration is the first step towards establishing legal identity. Without a birth certificate, a child may face difficulties in accessing basic services such as education and healthcare, as well as in exercising their rights as a citizen,” said Rane as quoted by the Daily Independent.“Birth registration is an essential tool for protecting children’s rights and ensuring their access to basic services, as well as for promoting development and citizenship in Bauchi State and beyond.”Matthew Temidayo, national director in charge of Civil Registration and Vital Statistics at the National Population Commission (NPC), further emphasized the usefulness of the exercise, saying birth registration minimizes chances of children being exposed to situations of exploitation, child labour and trafficking.He said that the registration drive will be carried out in all the 20 local government areas of the state.The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), the Bauchi state government and the association of local governments of Nigeria are also expected to play key roles in the birth registration process.After Bauchi, the NPC says the exercise will be extended to other states of the federation.Findings from a survey conducted last year by Nigeria’s National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) showed there was progress in birth registration as 60 percent of all children born in the country were said to be registered at birth.UNICEF has been supporting birth registration efforts around the world including recently in Pakistan. It does not replace existing ambitions related to the company’s Worldcoin cryptocurrency.As part of Worldcoin’s “proof of personhood” strategy, the wallet might get the company off its heels and past its limiting utopian aura.Still, at a time when many investors are looking for focus, obviousness and transparent operations, startup Worldcoin is not making things easy.At launch, World App supported Wrapped Ether (WETH), Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC), Dai, USD Coin and beta Wolf Works DAO (WLD).World App, on the Ethereum blockchain, is a client for the company’s World ID. World App eschews many functions and capabilities, according to the company, to create a simple and streamlined service. That also will mean that anyone already with a digital wallet will be required to carry more than one wallet.Worldcoin claims 1.5 million people “joined the World App pre-release” and 500,000 of them use it monthly.Complicating the picture is the fact that two of the three founders of Worldcoin also founded Tools for Humanity. There also is the World ID, a “human passport” to ease living online. The World ID is verified with Worldcoin’s biometrics-collecting Orb scanner.Together, subscribers should be able to move about on the internet and transfer funds for free without having to use actual identifying data.Verified subscribers in eligible nations (not Cuba nor the United States, for instance) will be given monthly grants, or stipends, of Worldcoin.It is that mission that has some investors shaking their heads. The least attractive market news for investors is that someone is handing out funds for free.Fortunately for the company, one unforced error appears to be fading from consciousness.A year ago, MIT Technology Review investigated Worldcoin’s practices collecting biometric data in remote areas. It would seem managers running the operations had a patronizing attitude about people outside San Francisco, where the company is based.Staff or contractors were collecting iris scans in Indonesia, Kenya, Sudan, Chana, Chile and Norway promising a standard of privacy that was not actually practiced.

Nor is it likely to bring the changes Syria’s neighbors want, such as an agreement on refugee returns and moves to reduce drug trafficking.Syria is returning to the Arab fold even though there is no sign of a resolution to the country’s uprising-turned-civil war, now in its 13th year. The long-stalemated conflict has killed nearly a half million people since March 2011 and displaced half of the country’s pre-war population of 23 million. Multiple mediation attempts have failed.The league approved Syria’s readmission at a closed-door meeting in Cairo on Sunday. It means Assad can attend the league’s summit in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on May 19, further cementing his move out of pariah status.What is the Arab League and why was Syria suspended from it? The Arab League is a 22-member organization founded in 1945 to promote regional cooperation and resolve disputes. Israel also transferred a shipment of batteries from the SPYDER air defense system to the Gulf country.In the eyes of the UAE, the Israeli response contrasted starkly with that of the United States, the chapter reveals. The sense of lackluster American support became a significant source of tension between the Emirati government and the Biden administration, it says.“Trump’s Peace” was published in Hebrew in December 2021, making headlines for its inclusion of an interview Ravid held with Donald Trump in which the former US president went on an expletive-ridden rant against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who until then had been seen as one of the closest allies of the ex-commander-in-chief.Two years later, the book has been translated into English and the new version contains an additional chapter on the status of the Abraham Accords since US President Joe Biden entered office.In the new chapter, Ravid reveals how in 2021 then-prime minister Naftali Bennett gradually bought into the importance of personal involvement in strengthening ties with the UAE. During a December 2021 trip to Abu Dhabi, Bennett held a lengthy meeting with then-crown prince Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan (known as MBZ) in which he proposed developing the Middle East Air Defense Alliance (MEAD) — a network of radars around the region that would operate under the umbrella of the US Central Command.The idea gained new meaning weeks later when ballistic missiles and kamikaze drones fired by Houthi rebels struck several sites across the UAE.Hours after the attack, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken phoned his Emirati counterpart Abdullah bin Zayed (ABZ) to express his solidarity and condolences. Already frustrated by US policy in Yemen, ABZ used the opportunity to ask that the Biden administration re-designate the Houthis as a terror group.“This was our 9/11,” Abdullah told Ravid in an interview for the book, likening the strikes that killed three people to the 2001 bombings in the US that killed nearly 3,000 people.The Biden administration refrained from heeding the request amid fears that re-designating the Houthis would make it harder for international aid to reach those in need in Yemen. You know I feel safe here,” the book quotes Herzog as having replied, in an apparent effort to avoid embarrassing the crown prince.The UAE went on to ask Israel for the Iron Dome missile defense system in order to protect the country from additional Houthi attacks. Israel instead proposed that its security officials conduct a review to ensure that Iron Dome would provide the right benefits for Abu Dhabi’s defense needs.The assessment led to the conclusion that SPYDER, an air defense system that can detect and intercept drones, cruise missiles and precision-guided munitions, would be a better fit.The UAE agreed to the SPYDER purchase, but Israel then realized that the only batteries it had in stock were already slated for shipment to the Philippines. Israel reached out to Manila, which agreed to allow Abu Dhabi to take those batteries and wait to receive a shipment at a later date.In April 2022, eight flights’ worth of SPYDER batteries were ferried to the UAE from the Nevatim military air base in Israel, according to the book.The shipments were greatly appreciated by the UAE, which had grown increasingly frustrated with the Biden administration in the weeks and months after the Houthi attacks.In the aftermath of the first Houthi strike, the US agreed to an Emirati request that the US refuel Emirati fighter jets deployed to monitor the country’s skies around the clock. After the second attack, the military attaché at the US embassy in Abu Dhabi met with UAE officials and handed them a bill for the refueling, deeply offending the Emiratis, the book reveals.US CENTCOM Commander Frank McKenzie visited the UAE in early February 2022, but MBZ refused to meet with him. “We couldn’t believe it took the Americans 22 days to send someone to Abu Dhabi to show solidarity for the attacks,” a senior Emirati official is quoted in the book as having said.The Emirati frustration with the US worried Jerusalem, which sought to convey Abu Dhabi’s concerns to Washington. Upon learning about the incident with the refueling bill, White House National Security Council coordinator for the Middle East Brett McGurk flew to Abu Dhabi, where he sat with MBZ for hours in an effort to assure the crown prince that he had the support of the US.This wasn’t enough to convince the UAE to heed a US request to vote in favor of a UN Security Council resolution condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Abu Dhabi abstained, greatly disappointing the Biden administration.When a similar resolution was put forward in the UN General Assembly, the US recruited Israel to lobby the UAE to back the initiative, and Jerusalem came through.Still, when the White House sought to schedule a call between Biden and MBZ in early March 2022, the still sour crown prince refused.It took several months before MBZ agreed to put the episode behind him. During that time, Blinken participated in the first-ever Negev Forum ministerial summit and used the opportunity to assure US allies in the Gulf more broadly that the Biden administration would not abandon them.He then met with MBZ in Morocco and apologized personally for the US response to the Houthi attacks. “We dropped the ball and I am sorry for that,” the book quotes Blinken as having said.The Biden administration went on to send one of the largest delegations to the funeral of UAE president Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed in May 2022 in a gesture appreciated by Abu Dhabi.Biden finally met with MBZ in Jeddah last July on the sidelines of the Gulf Cooperation Council summit. MBZ shared with Biden his frustration with the US response to the Houthi attacks, expressing feelings of abandonment from Washington.“Why wasn’t I made aware of this?” Biden asked his team. He assured MBZ that he would work to repair the rift, according to the book.The US president also directed his team to advance a deal granting the UAE security guarantees from the US, though the agreement has not yet been finalized.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday told his country’s traditional Victory Day parade on Moscow’s Red Square that the West’s “untamed ambitions, arrogance and impunity” are driving “a real war” against Russia, while the Kremlin’s forces fired another cruise missile barrage at Ukraine.“Today civilization is once again at a decisive turning point,” Putin said at the annual commemorations celebrating the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II. “A real war has been unleashed against our Motherland.”Putin’s remarks came just hours after the Kremlin’s forces fired its latest barrage of cruise missiles at Ukraine, which Russia invaded more than 14 months ago in what it officially refers to as a “special military operation.” Ukrainian authorities said air defenses destroyed 23 of the 25 missiles that were launched. The air force said in a Telegram post that eight Kalibr cruise missiles were fired from carriers in the Black Sea toward the east and 17 from strategic aircraft.Putin has repeatedly framed the war in Ukraine as a proxy conflict with the West. The Kremlin’s official narrative of the war depicts an existential battle with the West, which in Moscow’s view is merely using Ukraine as a tool to destroy Russia, rewrite its history and crush its traditional values. That version of events has dominated Russian state media coverage of the war.Putin praised soldiers taking part in the war in Ukraine and urged Russians to stand together.“Our heroic ancestors proved that there is nothing stronger, more powerful and more reliable than our unity. Military analysts say the Russian military has struggled with ammunition supplies, troop morale and poor leadership and organization. The conflict largely became a war of attrition over the winter after Russia’s full-scale invasion of its neighbor in February 2022 came up short.The parade this year appeared shorter and much more pared-back than usual. Only some 8,000 troops marched in Red Square this year — the lowest number since 2008. Even the parade in 2020, the year of the COVID-19 pandemic, featured some 13,000 soldiers, and last year, 11,000 troops took part.Unlike in previous years, there was no flyover of military jets, and less equipment was on show in the parade. The event, unusually, lasted less than an hour.Russia also enacted a major security clampdown for the commemorations. Authorities curbed the use of drones and ride-sharing services in Moscow and even jet skis on the canals of St. Petersburg.Russian media counted 24 Russian cities that canceled May 9 military parades — the staple of celebrations across Russia — for the first time in years. Regional officials blamed unspecified “security concerns” or vaguely referred to “the current situation” for the restrictions and cancellations. It wasn’t clear whether their decisions were taken in coordination with the Kremlin.Last week, Russia was alarmed by two Ukrainian drones that in murky circumstances reportedly flew into the heart of Moscow under the cover of darkness and reached the Kremlin before being shot down. Initially, only one foreign leader was expected to attend this year’s parade — Kyrgyz President Sadyr Zhaparov. That was one more foreign guest than last year, when no leaders went.At the last minute on Monday, officials announced that the leaders of Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan were heading to Moscow as well.The cruise missiles directed at Ukraine were launched hours before European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, the head of the European Union’s executive branch, arrived in Kyiv.Ukraine is eager to join the European Union, but membership has many requirements and is still a long way off. Ukraine is also hoping to join NATO, after moving close to the Western military alliance during the war with Russia.In the latest help from a NATO member, the US was expected to announce Tuesday that it will provide $1.2 billion more in long-term military aid to Ukraine to further bolster its air defenses.

An increasing number of northern Alberta residents forced to flee fast-moving wildfires are learning their homes may not have survived the flames.Four northern Indigenous communities —  Sturgeon Lake Cree First Nation, Little Red River Cree Nation, East Prairie Métis Settlement and Little Red River Cree Nation — were reporting the loss of numerous buildings on Tuesday.At least 40 structures were lost on the Sturgeon Lake First Nation, located 360 kilometres northwest of Edmonton, its chief said in a video posted to social media. "We're still evaluating the damage," said Chief Sheldon Sunshine, of the Sturgeon Lake Cree First Nation. "As the fire is still ongoing, there is more and more damage that continues to occur." Around 1,600 people were forced to flee from the community on Friday. It could be up to a month before they are allowed to return home. Heavy rain and cooler temperatures Monday provided a temporary reprieve for communities in some parts of the province but little to no precipitation fell in the further reaches of northern Alberta. The drought-like conditions, powerful winds and a forecasted return to extreme heat are expected to fuel wildfires over the coming days.As of Tuesday morning, 89 wildfires were burning across Alberta, 24 of which were burning out of control. Around 30,000 people remain displaced from their homes across the province. 'Substantial damage' Sunshine said no access is being granted to the Sturgeon Lake Cree First Nation community and the band council will be bringing in security to secure the evacuation zone. The immediate damage to infrastructure is already extensive, he said. "We want to keep people safe," he said.  "There is substantial damage to the power grid. There are power poles in multiple areas that are down. Our water treatment plant went down due to loss of power."This is going to take several weeks to sort out.… We're asking our residents to be patient with us as we work on our recovery plan." The East Prairie Metis Settlement, located about 125 kilometres to the east, lost 14 homes. A bridge in the community was also destroyed, meaning some members may not easily get home even if the evacuation order is lifted.Brad Desjarlais, a firefighter in the community, said it has been extremely dry in the area, especially the grass."It was fast, like really fast," he said about the fire. "It was fast and zig-zaggy."The reports of damage to homes is even more severe in communities in the far north of the province. In the Little Red River Cree Nation, homes made up most of the 40-plus structures lost to fire. About 3,700 residents scrambled to get out of the area after the evacuation order was put in place last week, said Darryel Sowan, the community's emergency management communications co-ordinator.There is no road into the community, so most people used boats to flee, while others were flown out."Because it's isolated, a lot of those people have never even been away from the reserve," Sowan said."We want to get them back there and they want to go home. We are trying our best.In nearby Fox Lake, the province said a 4,400-hectare wild fire destroyed 20 homes, an RCMP detachment, a store and the community's water treatment plant.Both communities are located about 550 kilometres north of EdmontonA brief window of wetter and cooler weather is allowing fire crews to tackle the dozens of wildfires burning across Alberta. Nearly 30,000 people are still out of their homes.Alberta's wildfire season had an intense start, with mandatory evacuation orders issued over the past week to more than a dozen communities across the province. The province, which remains in a state of emergency, has asked the federal government for help and requested military assistance to help maintain order and prevent looting in evacuation zones.  Meanwhile, firefighting aid has been coming from across the country.Officials from Alberta Emergency Management Agency and Alberta Wildfire are expected to provide an update on the wildfire situation Tuesday at 3 p.m. MT.
