The Week-More than 1,000 dead following massive earthquake in Morocco-Justin Klawans, Staff writer-Sat, September 9, 2023 at 10:43 a.m.

More than 1,000 people are dead and more than 1,200 are injured following a devastating earthquake Friday in Morocco, officials said. The magnitude-6.8 earthquake struck the North African country's Al Haouz province around 11 p.m. local time, according to a seismic reading from the U.S. Geological Survey. Its epicenter was located less than 50 miles from the historic city of Marrakesh, causing widespread damage. Residents were seen scrambling for cover as the earthquake began, with videos posted online later showing buildings reduced to piles of rubble. The earthquake also caused major damage in other cities throughout Morocco, including Rabat, Casablanca and Fez.As of Saturday afternoon local time, 1,037 people had died and 1,204 people had been injured, the Moroccan state TV channel Al Aoula reported, citing the country's interior ministry. Officials said this death toll was expected to rise as rescue efforts started to get underway. Moroccan King Mohammad VI ordered the mobilization of the army in order to assist search-and-rescue teams. The massive earthquake is the deadliest and strongest to hit the region in over 100 years, the U.S. Geological Survey said in its preliminary report. Since 1900, the survey has documented nine magnitude 5 earthquakes in the area, but none over magnitude 6 until now. Many of the deaths reportedly occurred in small settlements throughout Al Haouz. "We found casualties and people running and kids crying," Ayoub Toudite, a resident of the small village of Moulay Brahim, told The Associated Press. "We never saw anything like this, 20 deaths in the area, 30 injuries. We are all terrified that this happens again."Dozens of world leaders have offered condolences and aid to Morocco. President Biden said in a statement he was "deeply saddened by the loss of life and devastation," and was ready "to provide any necessary assistance for the Moroccan people."Morocco's deadly earthquake prompted Algeria, which cut ties with its neighbour two years ago, to put aside the countries' bad relations and open its air space to aid flights. The border between Algeria and Morocco, the most powerful countries in the region, has been closed since 1994 and Algiers closed its air space to Morocco and suspended diplomatic relations in 2021, accusing Rabat of "hostile acts".

Death Toll Climbs Morning After Morocco Earthquake

The death toll following the Morocco earthquake late on Friday, September 8, continued to climb on Saturday morning.More than 632 deaths were recorded as of 7 am local time, media reported the interior ministry as saying. At least 190 people were confirmed dead in Taroudant province, the report said.Video from Mustapha Louaanabi in Tazoult, near Taliouine in Taroudant province, showed people running through the village’s narrow streets after the magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck. The US Geological Survey recored a second, smaller, earthquake about 60 km northeast of Taroudant later in the night.Speaking to Storyful via the Whatsapp messaging service on Saturday morning, Louaanabi said aftershocks had continued through the night and one had just hit about 10 minutes earlier.“We are fine but very tired, because we spent the night outside,” he said. “A lot of shaking followed the earthquake.”He said there was “a lot” of damage and “some injuries” in Tazoult.

Powerful Morocco quake kills more than 1,000 people

STORY: Rescue workers comb rubble for survivors on Saturday (September 9) in the village of Amizmiz, south of Marrakech.Morocco's most powerful earthquake in six decades killed more than a thousand people and injured hundreds more.It toppled houses in remote mountain villages, where most of the deaths occurred. The magnitude 6.8 quake struck in the High Atlas mountains late on Friday night. This video captured the moment it struck in Marrakech, the closest city to the epicenter.Houses collapsed and buildings were damaged in its densely built old city, a UNESCO world heritage site. The minaret fell from this mosque in the historic Jemaa el-Fna square and the medieval city wall cracked.Marrakech resident Miloud Skrout says he was unable to get his sick parents out of their house because of the destruction. Tri, an Australian, was in Marrakech on a tour."The room started shaking. It was just.. yes the room started shaking. It no other way, we were going back and forward and everything started moving and pictures started moving and so we just grabbed so clothes."Residents spent the night in the open in many cities, afraid to go indoors. In Marrakech, some people camped out on pool deckchairs. It was Morocco's deadliest earthquake since 1960, when a tremor was estimated to have killed at least 12,000 people, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.Governments around the world offered support, including Turkey, where powerful earthquakes in February killed more than 50,000 people.

I HEARD IN THE HAWAII FIRE. THAT SOME HAWAIANS WORSHIP WATER. AND THIS COULD BE ANOTHER REASON WHY THEY REFUSED TO USE THE WATER FOR THE FIRE THAT KILLED 1,000 PEOPLE.

Native Hawaiians and Streams

From the earliest days, streams were among the most important natural resources sought after by native Hawaiians. Battles were fought and lives sacrificed for the right to use stream water. The Hawaiians called freshwater wai, and considered it to be sacred. People using wai from streams took only what was absolutely necessary. They were expected to share the wai with others. This was done without greed or selfishness. Such practices gave Hawaiians their word for law which is kānāwai, or the “equal sharing of water.” Water was so valuable to Hawaiians that they used the word “wai” to indicate wealth. Thus to signify abundance and prosperity, Hawaiians would say waiwai. ahupuaaIn keeping with this concept of wealth being fresh water, the traditional land tenure system in ancient Hawaii had at it’s very core the presence of streams, or kahawai. Native communities were arranged in land divisions called ahupua‘a (see illustration at left). Although of many shapes and sizes, each ahupua‘a consisted of three area types: mountain, plain, and sea. Although each of these sections were distinct and separate, they all shared a common factor . . . streams. Streams would begin up in mountain forests, flow into the plains, and then empty out to sea. These streams provided the people living in the ahupua‘a their wealth. Streams allowed certain mountain plants to grow and flourish. These plants provided the material for native Hawaiians to produce medicine, build canoes, make nets and fishing lines. Coming from the mountain, wai flowed into the flat and sloping land between mountain and sea. Here in these plains, ancient Hawaiians used the wai from the streams to grow their food crops. They constructed ditches called ‘auwai to divert water to fields where taro, banana, breadfruit, sugar cane, sweet potatoes, and yams grew. Taro, or kalo, was one of the most important plants used by native Hawaiians. It was carefully cultivated in flooded fields called lo‘i kalo. These lo‘i kalo required continuously flowing wai from streams in order to grow. Without cool flowing wai, kalo could not flourish thus depriving native Hawaiians of a very important staple food. After watering their crops, Hawaiians allowed the excess wai to return to the streams. This practice allowed others downstream to also use the wai to irrigate their plants. Often at the shoreline and close to the mouth of streams, Hawaiians built fishponds called loko i‘a. In these fishponds certain kinds of fish, crabs, shrimps, and seaweeds thrived in the mixture of fresh and ocean water. At one time there were some 300 loko i‘a in Hawai‘i. These played an important role in lives and culture of native Hawaiians. Migrating from the ocean directly into streams were certain kinds of animals. Unique species of fishes, shrimps, and shellfishes moved upstream into the plains and mountains to become the ‘o‘opu, ‘ōpae, and hīhīwai. These freshwater animals were used as food items by Hawaiians and were an important component in their diet.kaloThus as you now see, streams played an extremely important role in the lives of ancient Hawaiians. Care was taken not to pollute the water in streams that flowed down from mountains through the valleys into plains and out to sea. Without clean and ample free flowing streams in ahupua‘a, native plants and animals could not have survived. Without these plants and animals, native Hawaiians could not prosper and be wealthy. As you can imagine streams were, and still are, extremely important to the lives and culture of native Hawaiians.Illustration of an Ahupua‘a by Robin Y.
