19-The righteous see it, and are glad: and the innocent laugh them to scorn.
20-Surely our substance is not cut down, but the remnant of them the fire consumes.
21-Acquaint now yourself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto you.
22-Receive, I pray you, the law from his mouth, and lay up his words in your heart.

What
are Israelis saying about the total solar eclipse? Many Christians see
the rare total solar eclipse in North America as a divine warning, and a
“sign of the times.”By Israel Today Staff | Apr 7, 2024 at 10:00 am |
Tomorrow,
Monday, April 8, people living in parts of North America will have a
rare opportunity to witness a total solar eclipse. Many Christians view
this as a prophetic event, which for us always begs the question: What
are Israelis and the Jewish people at large saying about it? After all,
they are the ‘People of the Book’ from which those prophecies come.A
survey of the Hebrew press reveals that Israelis are widely aware of,
and even excited by the upcoming eclipse, but aren’t seeing anything in
it beyond scientific curiosity. Even religious and ultra-Orthodox Jewish
media outlets are devoid of any talk of prophecy or “signs in the
skies” in relation to this particular eclipse. That’s not to say Judaism
attaches no spiritual importance to eclipses or other celestial events.
It most certainly does. The medieval French rabbi known by the acronym
Rashi, one of Judaism’s most revered sages, wrote that eclipses are
always a bad omen. Which means a total eclipse is most certainly not a
‘good’ sign. Most other rabbis agree that a solar eclipse is a heavenly
call to repentance. In the Talmud, the Jewish sages teach that a total
solar eclipse is “comparable to a king who prepared a feast for his
servants and placed a lantern before them to illuminate the hall. He
became angry at them and said to his servant: Take the lantern from
before them and seat them in darkness.”But for many religious Israeli
Jews, for a major celestial event to have prophetic significance, at
least in relation to Israel, it should actually be visible from
Israel. Some Christians who have written to Israel Today argue that the
eclipse is visible in North America because the prophetic significance
is as a warning to the world’s only true superpower regarding its recent
hostile stance toward Israel. The Biden Administration initially backed
Israel unreservedly in its war against Gaza and other regional enemies.
But, like most other nations around the world, America quickly became
critical, and of late has been issuing little but condemnations of
Israel over the prolonged battle against Hamas. For Israelis, this simply
makes no sense. Hamas announced its goal of destroying Israel, and then
went on a mass killing spree on Oct. 7 to show that it was serious. And
Hamas, like Hezbollah, is backed by an Iranian regime with the same
agenda. In other words, this is a clear existential threat. So Israelis
are more than a little frustrated that their supposed “best friend” in
the world is being so critical of their fighting tooth-and-nail against
this threat. Maybe God is signaling His displeasure, too?
The
Biden administration’s war against the government of Israel-Before Oct.
7, rioters demanded the overthrow of Netanyahu’s coalition due to its
“anti-democratic” policies and “corruption.” The new rallying cry is to
free the hostages.Tents set up by Israeli protesters outside of the
Knesset in Jerusalem, demanding action by the government to bring home
the hostages still being held captive by Hamas in Gaza, April 1,
2024.(April 1, 2024 / JNS)
The war rages in the
Gaza Strip, northern Israel, Lebanon, Eilat and on the streets of
Israel’s cities as Iran’s Palestinian, Lebanese, Syrian, Iraqi and
Yemeni proxies maintain and escalate their operations against the Jewish
state. Unmoved by this state of affairs, Israel’s far left is
reinstating the anti-government riots that occurred regularly through
the first three-quarters of 2023.The newest round of leftist political
violence began officially on Saturday night in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem in
the first of what has been billed as four days of protests. As was the
case in the anti-government protests before Hamas’s invasion of and
one-day holocaust in southern Israel on Oct. 7, in the current round,
demonstrations are followed by riots in which a few dozen participate. As
before, riots feature bonfires along major traffic arteries, assaults
on police and ultra-Orthodox Jews, threats to murder Israeli Prime
Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and storming police barricades protecting
the premier’s home. They also involve massive exaggerations of the number
of protesters. On Sunday night in Jerusalem, for instance, organizers
proclaimed the participation of 100,000 protesters. But aerial
photographs of the event indicate that at most, a tenth of that number
showed up.Before Oct. 7, rioters demanded the overthrow of the
government due to its “anti-democratic” policies or its “corruption.”
The new rallying cry is to free the hostages. On Saturday night,
relatives of 10 of the 134 hostages declared, “To return our loved ones,
we have decided to work in the service of Hamas. We are demanding that
the Israeli government accept the organization’s demands immediately. If
not—we will burn the country down.”Obviously, if the families get their
way, Hamas will demand that Israel cease to exist in exchange for the
hostages. Given that their demand causes harm to their loved ones, why
are the organizers putting them up to this? To be sure, there are a
number of reasons this is happening. But perhaps the main one was
revealed on March 17 by riot leader Ami Dror in a WhatsApp group chat
with his colleagues. The communication, which Dror authenticated in an
interview with Channel 14, was first reported on X by a poster who
operates under the handle, Arbelu the Tuna Hunter. In that communication,
Dror told his colleagues that the White House was asking them to
reinstate the riots.Based on what he referred to as a conversation with
his contacts in the White House, Dror set out in granular detail the
White House’s four-part plan to overthrow the government. The components
involved actions on the ground in Gaza; the use of the U.N. Security
Council; extortion of government ministers; and mass protests.Dror
called his report: “An important update from the American
administration.”He explained that his update followed an earlier text he
sent out on March 6 on the same topic. “The American plan, as I
published it on March 6 remains unchanged. The day after my publication,
the Biden administration announced the establishment of an American
port [in Gaza] that will seize from Israel the ability to rule the
Strip—the port will be used initially to provide food, but the central
purpose of the port is to rebuild Gaza.”The purpose of the U.S. campaign
for humanitarian aid, he explained, was twofold: undermining the
control of the Israeli Defense Forces in Gaza and blackmailing
government ministers. In his words, “Government ministers are receiving
messages from ‘American friends’ that they will be accused of war
crimes. Under our radar, the U.S. and the E.U. have framed the hunger in
northern Gaza as a war crime. This is an excuse for seizing control
over the territory from Israel (parachuting food continuously, including
by the German military, and building a port), but the words “potential
indictment” for all members of the government of destruction is the
clincher. How does it work? There are many members of the government
that don’t want to lose their physical or economic freedom. The
immediate targets are [billionaire Economy Minister Nir] Barkat (by
freezing assets and turning the millionaire into a wanted man) [and] the
Haredi parties … they and their communities worldwide have many
properties. … Ministers in the government will become potential
fugitives if they don’t enable the formation of a government without
Kahanists. … Don’t be surprised if [Shas party leader Aryeh] Deri and
[Agudat Israel head Minister Yitzhak] Goldknopf bring down the
government soon. The Hareidi draft is just an excuse—their Hareidi
cronies in America don’t want to get in trouble with Uncle Sam.”As for
the United Nations, 10 days before the administration abstained from the
vote for a Chinese- and Russian-sponsored resolution for an immediate
ceasefire not conditioned on the release of the hostages, Dror wrote,
“The United States intends to pass a resolution in the UN Security
Council that calls for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza. The draft
resolution was already published and it is being used as a means to
pressure the government to prevent it from undermining a hostage deal
[on Hamas’s terms]. If Netanyahu agrees to the deal [which will
effectively involve strategic defeat in war], [National Security
Minister Itamar] Ben Gvir will have to leave the government, (if he
doesn’t he will lose most of his supporters). In this case, the
government ‘will survive’ and be dependent on [Benny] Gantz and [Gideon]
Saar and it will be easy to expand the government to include [Yair]
Lapid and [Avigdor] Lieberman, [and so transform it into a government
controlled by the political left]. This is the administration’s
preferred option. If Netanyahu rejects the hostage deal in the next ten
days—the Security Council will approve the U.S. draft, (or even worse—a
different draft that the U.S. will not veto) [requiring] Israel to
accept a ceasefire. (And practically speaking, ending the war will bring
about the government’s overthrow.)”Dror moved to the role of domestic
political actors in achieving the White House’s plan. Initially, he
wrote, the administration believed that Benny Gantz, National Resilience
Party leader and Netanyahu’s chief political rival, would bring the
government down for it. But he has lost their confidence.“Gantz,” he
wrote, “was summoned to the United States for a reprimand. He was
humiliated. The Americans said hair-raising things to him. At the start
of the war, the Americans demanded that he join the government. He was
their man. The man that would ensure that Netanyahu and Ben Gvir didn’t
set the world on fire. He came in and blocked the war in Lebanon, and
promised that he was going in for six weeks and then he and the protest
groups would take the government apart. After six weeks, he and Deri
promised that by January 1 they would deliver the goods and in practice,
the final deadline the Americans gave him was Ramadan. When he didn’t
deliver for the U.S., the administration understood that they can’t
trust Gantz. Maybe he’ll be a comfortable prime minister in the future.
But the Americans seized full control over management of the war
[against Netanyahu].”‘We are sick of the threats from extremists’Now
that Gantz is out of the game, Dror said that the administration is
moving the center of gravity to Dror and his fellow riot chiefs.“And the
most important thing? Us, and President Biden’s request from us: The
American method of dealing with misbehaving states, includes the
destruction (economic and legal) that is centered on the leadership on
the one hand, and driving a wedge between “the nation,” and “the
leadership.” In our case … for this to work—the nation of Israel must
show (in the streets!) that it is fighting the leadership. … The
American administration needs to see the nation in Israel fighting the
government of Israel.”The new slogan of the protests, he said, must be
the hostages. “The most urgent task is the return of the hostages, and
the way to return the hostages is by replacing the government=setting a
date for elections now.”Last week, in a Zoom meeting with progressive
American Jews, reported by Channel 14, Dror heralded a loss of Israeli
sovereignty to the White House. He said that he prefers to be an
American colony than to have the Israeli right in power. So far, the new
protests have done more to turn the public against Dror and his comrades
than against the government. Moments after the demonstration began in
Tel Aviv, statements went out from hostages’ families that the relatives
calling for protesters to “burn down the country” do not represent
them. The media, which had tried to present the families of 10 out of
134 hostages as “the hostages’ families,” were forced to acknowledge
that they represented a tiny fraction of the families.Bereaved parents
of soldiers also began to speak out in short order, to great effect. One
of the prominent statements came from Hagai Luver, whose son Yonatan
Luver was killed in battle in Gaza in late December.
Luver wrote, “No
one is going to burn down my country. We are sick of the threats from
extremists. Yes, even when the extremists have relatives in Gaza. You
will not burn the country. This will not happen. And if fighting you is
required, I will fight you. Millions of people are looking at you in
disbelief … and only because of your suffering, they are silent. But I
will not be silent. My son was killed in Gaza. He went to defend and
rescue your children, and was killed. He left everything. He left a
pregnant wife and a 9-month baby boy, and was killed. He will never come
back. No agreement will bring him back. And so I have a right to tell
you this: You may not tear apart the country.”Dror’s boasts of close
ties to the White House may or may not be empty. But what is clear
enough is that the people of Israel—while deeply sympathetic to the fate
of the hostages—will not be taken for a ride and will not allow the
State of Israel to be driven into political chaos. The riot leaders and
the administration may well believe that the enemy is the Israeli
government. But the Israeli public isn’t buying it. On Oct. 7, the
people’s eyes were opened, and they will not be closing any time soon.
Israel is waging war and will continue to wage the war against its
actual enemies—Hamas, Hezbollah and their puppet master Iran—until
victory.jns-Israel is at war - Support JNS
BLOOD LIBELS: From
matzah to rats to ‘Nosfenyahou’Posted March 27, 2024-The “La Presse”
cartoon, based on a 1920s antisemitic film, depicts Netanyahu as a
vampire, suggesting simply he is a Jewish bloodsucker and, more broadly,
that the Jewish state — and Jews worldwide — must be vigorously opposed
by right-thinking people who don’t want Jewish vampires to kill
them.Oct. 7 was one battle in a larger jihad to annihilate Israel.
Propaganda in the form of blood libels is a central component of the
war.”By Caroline Glick
According to Canada’s La Presse, Israeli
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is a vampire, and he is poised to suck
the life out of the Palestinians in Rafah, Hamas’ final outpost in
southern Gaza. The newspaper that was once a paper of record in Canada
ran a cartoon on March 20 (a piece of which is pictured at right)
portraying Netanyahu as a vampire, with a huge hooked nose, pointy ears
and claws for fingers, dressed in Dracula’s overcoat while standing on
the deck of a pirate ship. The caption, written in blood-dripping red
letters, read: “Nosfenyahou: En Route Vers Rafah.” Nosferatu, the
Romanian word for vampire, was the title of a proto-Nazi German silent
horror film from 1922 chock-full of antisemitic poison. The film, which
became something of a cult flick, featured a vampire with a long Jewish
nose. He arrived at an idyllic German town with a box full of
plague-carrying rats that he released on the innocent villagers as he
plotted to suck his realtor’s blood.La Presse’s cartoon didn’t leave any
room for imagination. It wasn’t making a political or military argument
against Israel’s planned ground operation in Rafah. Its goal wasn’t to
persuade anyone of anything. The Netanyahu-the-vampire cartoon asserted
simply that Netanyahu is a Jewish bloodsucker and, more broadly, the
Jewish state — and Jews worldwide — must be vigorously opposed by all
right-thinking people who don’t want Jewish vampires to kill them.As the
paper no doubt anticipated, the cartoon provoked an outcry from
Canadian Jews and some politicians. And after a few hours, the newspaper
took it off its website and apologized. Anyone who thinks that means
that the good guys won misses the point of the move. The Jewish outcry
and pile-on by politicians and media coverage proved the point. Jews are
evil and control everything, even what a private paper can publish.
Like “Nosferatu” in its day, the cartoon will become a piece of
folklore, additional proof that the Jews are the enemy of humanity. In
other words, the cartoon was a blood libel. We’re seeing lots of it these
days. And so, it is worth recalling what a blood libel is.In its
original form, of course, the libel was specifically about blood. About
1,000 years ago, Christians in England began accusing Jews of performing
ritual murders of Christian children to use their blood to bake
Passover matzahs. The accusation was inherently insane. Jewish law
prohibits murder. It prohibits cannibalism. It prohibits child
sacrifice. It prohibits eating food with blood. But none of that
mattered.Like the cartoon in La Presse, the blood libel didn’t seek to
persuade anyone. It presumed that its target audiences already hated
Jews or had a latent tendency to hate Jews, which the blood libel aimed
to unleash. The purpose of the blood libel was to scapegoat the Jews and
to incite target audiences from London to Damascus to act on that
hatred. Over the millennium, hundreds of thousands of Jews were
massacred in Europe and the Islamic world in response to blood
libels.Since the original blood libel, other ones have appeared. Whether
Jews are accused of spreading plague, poisoning wells, controlling the
banking system, the media, corrupting young people or spearheading a
world Communist revolution, the common denominators in all of the
accusations are the same.Blood libels appeal to emotion, not reason.
They do not seek to persuade anyone; rather, they are geared towards
unleashing latest antisemitism. They legitimize and incite violence
against Jews, who — once slandered as the enemies of the good — have no
moral right to live. The nature and purpose of blood libels make them
impossible to combat. Jews cannot disprove blood libels because they
aren’t based on fact but on feelings or intentions attributed to Jews by
people who hate them. Can Netanyahu prove that he isn’t a vampire? Of
course not. If he bothered to try, it would be seen as proof that he’s
covering something up. Can Jews prove that they aren’t evil? No, again.
Because people predisposed to believe that Jews are evil see everything
good that Israel does as an effort to cover up its foundational,
immutable malevolence. “Pink-washing” is a case in point. The discourse
on Israel’s war in Gaza is suffused in blood libels.Consider the
accusation that Gazans are starving. USAID administrator Samantha Power
issued a statement on Tuesday claiming that “famine is imminent in
northern Gaza.”Power pointed a finger directly at Israel, blaming it for
the “imminent” famine. “The US will continue to do everything we can to
get food to people in Gaza, but Israel must do more to put an end to
this mass — and preventable — suffering.”Almost simultaneously, EU
Foreign Minister Josep Borrell accused Israel of deliberately starving
the people of Gaza. As he put it, “In Gaza, we are no longer on the
brink of famine, we are in a state of famine, affecting thousands of
people. This is unacceptable. Starvation is used as a weapon of war.
Israel is provoking famine.”These allegations were regurgitated in every
language at multiple forums throughout the week. The fact that they are
untrue is of no interest.According to data from COGAT — the Israel
Defense Forces’ unit responsible for aid deliveries to Gaza before Oct. 7
— an average of 70 food trucks entered Gaza daily. In March, an average
of 126 food trucks entered Gaza daily. That’s an 80% increase. But facts
are for losers. And anyway, if no one dies of starvation in Gaza, that
means that the good-hearted people of the world foiled Israel’s evil
plans. Whatever happens, Israel’s ascribed criminality retroactively
justifies Hamas’ invasion and slaughter of Israelis on Oct. 7, and
supports the now-open US position that Israel must lose the war. It also
justifies assaults against Jews throughout the Western world. Then there
is the claim that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza, or at a
minimum, has deliberately murdered upwards of 30,000 Gazans — 70% of
whom are women and children. There are three problems with the number
30,000. First, its source is Hamas, and so there is no way to check it.
Second, assuming it’s true — since Israel’s assertion that it has killed
more than 13,000 terrorists can be verified and is true — the ratio of
terrorists to civilians among the dead in Gaza is 1:1.3, the lowest
militant-to-civilian ratio in the history of modern warfare. And third,
as was demonstrated earlier this month in a study by Abraham Wyner, a
statistics professor at the Wharton School of the University of
Pennsylvania, Hamas’ data is “not real.”Wyner wrote that the Hamas data
“is highly suggestive that a process unconnected or loosely connected to
reality was used to report the numbers. Most likely, the Hamas ministry
settled on a daily total arbitrarily. We know this because the daily
totals increase too consistently to be real. Then they assigned about
70% of the total to be women and children, splitting that amount
randomly from day to day. Then they in-filled the number of men as set
by the predetermined total. This explains all the data observed.”Despite
all of these provable, easily demonstrated facts, Israel stands in
judgment for genocide at The Hague, and Jews are chased, harassed and
beaten; and Jewish institutions are vandalized and burned in cities
across the United States and Europe for their support for “genocide” of
Palestinians.Another allegation that is gaining prominence, after being
propagated by the UN Human Rights Commission, claims that Israeli prison
officials sexually abuse Palestinian female prisoners. There is no
evidence, let alone any proof, of such claims. Indeed, there are no
allegations that can be checked in any way. All the same, they are
making the rounds.IDF Brig. Gen. (ret.) Amir Avivi reported on a meeting
that he held Thursday at the US State Department, where he was
confronted with the accusation head-on.On his X account, Avivi wrote:
“It’s hard to leave me speechless and shocked, but that is precisely
what happened in my meeting at the State Department when the
representative responsible for the Israeli-Palestinian dossier accused
Israel of systematic sexual abuse of Palestinian women entirely on the
basis of a concocted UN report that was written to try to find something
to balance the atrocities of Oct. 7.”Israelis and Jews around the world
were stunned by the swiftness and ferocity of the propaganda campaign
Hamas’ supporters in the West launched in the immediate wake of Hamas’
orgy of murder and sadism in southern Israel. Less than 24 hours after
the news broke, Hamas supporters at Harvard University kicked off the
hate campaign by getting 31 student groups to sign a statement blaming
Israel for Hamas’ atrocities. As details of the crimes began to flow,
Hamas’ supporters in the West responded with violent denials of all of
them. No rape. No immolation of children. No torture. No nothing. It was
all Israel’s fault, they said. Israel killed and raped its own people.
And now the Jews are raping Palestinian women. How do we know? Because
they are Jews.On the face of things, the rapidity and shamelessness of
the projection of blame and culpability onto Israel was shocking. Normal
people could be forgiven for assuming that in the face of crimes of
this enormity, Hamas’ supporters would lay low. But that assumption
misses the point.Oct. 7 was one battle in a larger jihad to annihilate
Israel. Propaganda in the form of blood libels is a central component of
the war. The libels against Jews and the Jewish state today play the
same role as they played in the Middle Ages, just on a national scale. If
Jews deserved to be killed because Jews are evil, then the Jewish state
deserves to be annihilated because it is the evil Jewish state.
Everything that happens to Israel is proof of its evil. Every crime
committed against Israel is a crime Israel committed. And if Israel
doesn’t commit crimes attributed to it, then that’s because good people
like Power and Borrell stood in its way.The depressing thing, of course,
is that Hamas’ strategy is working. The latent Jew-hatred in the West
was widespread enough to support their crimes. The propagation of the
blood libels by the United Nations, the European Union and the State
Department is a disturbing indicator of just how bad things really
are.The question is what can Israel — and Jews more broadly — do in the
midst of this avalanche of blood libel? The answer is twofold.•First,
Israel must stop trying to prove a negative. No one cares if we are
really blood-thirsty vampires. Persuasion doesn’t work with people moved
by emotion, particularly hatred. Instead, Israel and Jews worldwide
need to concentrate on rallying the people who viscerally understand
what is going on and aren’t taken in by antisemitic cartoons and Hamas
propaganda, even if it is spoken by Samantha Power. •As for the haters,
countering them means going on the offensive. On the battlefield in
Gaza, it means destroying Hamas completely so that everyone understands
that attacking the Jews is a bad idea. And on the battlefields of the
United Nations, the European Union, the State Department, Harvard,
Berkeley, New York City and London, the answer is to expose the haters
with as much vigor and ferocity as they demonize the Jews.
The US
campaign to oust Netanyahu-The US secretary of state is pushing a plan
for the Palestinian Authority to take over Gaza.By Caroline Glick | Jan

Is Israel on the cusp of political
upheaval? In recent days, evidence has grown that two key actors—the
Biden administration and Israel’s security establishment—are both
pushing the country in that direction to advance their longstanding
common goal of ousting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the
religious-right bloc from power. The Biden administration showed its hand
on Tuesday when US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken gave Israel an
ultimatum to support Palestinian statehood or risk demonization by the
administration.Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos,
Switzerland, Blinken restated the administration’s demand that Netanyahu
present a plan for the day after the war against Hamas in Gaza and the
administration’s goal of using the war to establish a Palestinian state.
Blinken insisted that the only side that refuses to accept the
administration’s goal is the Israeli public—and its leader,
Netanyahu.Insisting that “Arab leaders, Palestinian leaders” have
prepared their people for Palestinian statehood, Blinken said: “I think
the challenge now, the question now, is is Israeli society prepared to
engage on these questions? Is it prepared to have that
mindset?”Israelis, of course, have engaged in the question of
Palestinian statehood. After the atrocities that the Palestinians
carried out against their people and state on Oct. 7—and as the full
mobilization of Palestinian society in Gaza and Judea and Samaria on
behalf of Hamas’s war of genocide against Israel has been
revealed—Israeli support for Palestinian statehood dried up. As Direct
Polls revealed last month, 81% of Israelis, including Arab Israelis, say
there is no prospect for peace with the Palestinians, including 70% of
left-wing voters. Some 88% of Israelis do not trust the Palestinian
leadership.Blinken, however, doesn’t seem to care what Israelis think.
He wants them to obey, and he views Netanyahu as the obstacle to Israeli
obeisance to the administration’s program. As a result, he wants the
prime minister ousted from power, as NBC News’ Andrea Mitchell reported
on Wednesday. She wrote that during his visit to Israel last week,
Blinken offered Netanyahu a deal. In exchange for Israeli support for
Palestinian statehood, Saudi Arabia would normalize its ties with
Israel.Netanyahu said no.Netanyahu’s position, the administration
believes, means he has to go.“Three senior US officials say the Biden
administration is looking past Netanyahu to try to achieve its goals in
the region. Several senior US officials told NBC News that Netanyahu
‘will not be there forever,’” Mitchell wrote.“The Biden administration
is trying to lay the groundwork with other Israeli and civil society
leaders in anticipation of an eventual post-Netanyahu government. In an
attempt to work around Netanyahu [during his visit to Israel], Blinken
also met individually with members of his war Cabinet and other Israeli
leaders, including opposition leader … Yair Lapid.”A ‘civil society’
action group-Significantly, Blinken tried to compel Netanyahu to agree
to a plan that would see the US-supported, Fatah-controlled Palestinian
Authority that nominally controls the Palestinian autonomous areas in
Judea and Samaria take over Gaza. The PA’s US-financed forces train for
war against Israel and participate in terrorist attacks. The PA pays
salaries to jailed terrorists, including the Hamas murderers and rapists
who carried out the Oct. 7 atrocities. The PA schools, universities and
media indoctrinate Palestinian children and society as a whole to seek
the annihilation of Israel and the Jewish people through a genocidal
jihad. The PA’s official position since Oct. 7 is to seek the
establishment of a unity government between Fatah and Hamas in Judea and
Samaria, as well as Gaza. In other words, empowering the genocidal PA
means maintaining Hamas’s grip on power. Neither PA leader Mahmoud Abbas
nor any PA or Fatah official has yet condemned the atrocities of Oct.
7.Blinken insists that Israel cannot win a military victory in Gaza. As
Mitchell put it, “Blinken told Netanyahu that ultimately there is no
military solution to Hamas … and that the Israeli leader needs to
recognize that or history will repeat itself and violence will
continue.”War, in other words, is futile.Although the public and
Netanyahu reject this view, Blinken does have partners in Israeli “civil
society” for his position. And those partners—led by retired
generals—began a massive, multimillion-dollar campaign for new elections
just before Blinken arrived in Israel.Last month, the Hakol Hayehudi
news agency reported that immediately after Oct. 7, the Mitvim think
tank put together a “civil society” action group led by retired general
Nimrod Sheffer to build a plan for the establishment of a Palestinian
state after the war.Sheffer, a retired head of the Israel Defense
Forces’ Planning Division and a fighter pilot, was one of the most
prominent retired generals pushing for Netanyahu’s ouster during the
10-month-long left-wing insurrection that preceded the Oct. 7
Palestinian invasion of southern Israel. Among other things, Sheffer was
a leader of the campaign to convince active reserve Israeli Air Force
pilots to refuse to serve in reserves as long as the government advanced
its legislative effort to limit the powers of the Supreme Court.Hakol
Hayehudi published the minutes of Sheffer’s group’s weekly meetings.
From week to week, as the depth of the public’s rejection of Palestinian
statehood became clear, the group realized that they wouldn’t be able
to sell their plan to the Israeli people. So, they changed gears. They
wouldn’t bother trying to convince the public of anything other than
that the “settlers” and the “extremist right” are responsible for the
war. Instead, they would have the United States run their campaign.“The
Americans are the ones that need to lead, craft and manage the process,”
they wrote. “The US needs to implement policy steps that Israel won’t
be able to veto.”To safeguard their plans for Palestinian statehood, the
Mitvim group argued that Israel must not destroy Hamas’s “civil
infrastructure,” which it foresees the PA taking over.Last month,
opposition leader Yair Lapid participated in a Mitvim conference on “the
day after.” The next day, Lapid parroted Mitvim’s plan in an interview
with Israel Radio. While Lapid is a big fish, the IDF General Staff and
Defense Minister Yoav Gallant are even bigger fish. For more than a
month, the General Staff has insisted that the government must begin
discussions about “the day after the war.” On Jan. 4, Gallant presented
his plan for “the day after” and insisted that the government discuss
it.To date, Netanyahu has refused.Gallant’s plan bears notable
similarity both to Mitvim’s plans and the Biden administration’s
positions. It calls for the PA employees in Gaza, who operate the
“civil” infrastructure of the Hamas regime, to be retained in their
positions. The fact that these 17,000 PA employees overwhelmingly
support Hamas, that many Oct. 7 terrorists were PA employees and that
Fatah forces in Gaza, ostensibly subordinate to the PA, filmed
themselves participating in the slaughters of Oct. 7 clearly made no
impression on him. Gallant insisted that a US-led international force,
including Arab governments, should have overall control over governance.
Gaza residents who left their homes should be allowed—even forced—to
return. Gallant’s plan calls for the IDF to have the right to operate
freely in Gaza. But his plan does not foresee any permanent IDF
presence—and through it, control—over Gaza.Reportedly due to massive
pressure from Blinken and against the expressed recommendations of
commanders on the ground, on Friday the General Staff stunned the public
by announcing that it was removing a division from Gaza. In the days
immediately following the troop withdrawal, the city of Netivot was
attacked by rockets twice from areas IDF forces had abandoned in central
and northern Gaza.On Monday, Gallant gave a news conference where he
restated his demand that the cabinet and government discuss his “day
after.” Gallant insisted that without a plan for the day after, the army
wouldn’t know what to fight for.“The end of the military campaign has
to be anchored in a diplomatic action. The diplomatic plan must be the
roadmap for military action. The absence of a diplomatic decision is
liable to undermine military operations.”Notably, when Gallant laid out
the government’s war goals on Monday evening, he failed to mention the
goal of eradicating Hamas’s political capabilities. He also scaled back
the goal of defeating Hamas militarily from “eradicating” to
“dismantling.”According to Channel 13, the day before Gallant’s press
conference, Chief of General Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi essentially
said that from his perspective, the war was basically over, and it was
up to the government to develop a diplomatic plan for the day
after.According to Channel 13’s report of Halevi’s remarks, he insisted
that all of the army’s hard-fought achievements were about to be erased
“because there is no strategy for the day after.”Halevi said: “It’s
possible that we’ll have to go back and act in areas where we already
finished fighting.”“We are worried that the Hamas will reorganize in
northern Gaza. We need to determine the way we want to finish the war.
The current achievements in the war are being eroded. We need a civil
[governance] plan,” he continued.Like Netanyahu and the public, Halevi
and Gallant must know that the only way to secure Israel’s war aims is
to complete the IDF’s conquest of all of Gaza. Even then, the only way
to ensure that Gaza does not pose a continued threat to Israel is for
the IDF to remain in charge of Gaza for the foreseeable future and for
the population of Gaza to be permitted to leave the area for third
countries. The administration totally opposes all of these actions. This
then brings us to the reason Netanyahu has to date refused to set a plan
for the day after the war. Given Israel’s requirements for victory, the
moment Netanyahu allows the government to discuss them—much less adopt
them—Israel will find itself in an open breach with the Biden
administration. So long as Sen. Charles Schumer, the Democratic Senate
Majority Leader from New York, blocks the Senate from voting to approve
the $14.3 billion military aid package Biden pledged to Israel in
October, Israel cannot risk such a breach. Given the depleted state of
Israel’s current inventory of ammunition for its ground and air forces,
without the supplemental aid, the IDF will be hard-pressed to fight the
war to victory.By demanding that Netanyahu adopt the softened version of
the US position, the General Staff and Gallant, along with the
anti-Netanyahu national security establishment as a whole, are
presenting Israel’s leader with an impossible choice. Netanyahu can
adopt a policy for victory but endanger US rearmament, thus increasing
the danger that the United States will abandon Israel at the United
Nations. Or he can accept a version of the US position and commit Israel
to strategic defeat. If he does the former, he will face a protest
campaign led by the media and the security brass accusing him of
destroying Israel-US relations and enabling them to plunge Israel into a
new round of political instability. And if he does the latter, his
coalition partners are likely to leave the government and overthrow it,
and give the United States and the left their wish for new elections in
the midst of war.
