One woman who offered help at the scene became ill after her exposure to the monkeys, which were imported to the U.S. for scientific research.A woman who offered assistance at the scene of a truck crash involving captive lab monkeys in rural Pennsylvania says she has fallen ill after being exposed to the animals' feces and saliva. The wild incident unfolded Friday afternoon in Danville, where a truck carrying 100 monkeys collided with a dump truck, spilling the animals onto Route 54 near I-80 in Montour County. Four monkeys escaped from their crates. One was corralled at the scene. The three others became the subjects of a lengthy search by Pennsylvania State Police and the Pennsylvania Game Commission, which located and euthanized the animals Saturday.Danville resident Michele Fallon was driving directly behind the truck that crashed and observed the monkey crates tumble from the trailer. In a Facebook post, Fallon said she initially was told there were cats inside the crates and offered to help with the cleanup – only to discover she was surrounded by monkeys. "I thought I was just doing the right thing by helping," Fallon said in an interview Monday with WBRE. "I had no idea it would turn out this way."After touching and handling the monkey crates, Fallon said she later developed a cough, runny nose and a pink eye-like reaction in one of her eyes. She explained that she'd had a prior open cut on her hand and became worried about her health.One of the long-tailed macaques "hissed" at her from inside a crate that fell onto the roadway, she said. "I was close to the monkeys. I touched the crates. I walked through their feces. I was very close," Fallon said. "I was inside the trailer where the monkey crates were, so I called to inquire, you know, was I safe?"When Fallon initially got out of her car to help, she said she was not warned by the truck driver that she shouldn't approach the crates or interact with the animals."If he would have told me that, then I would have been more careful," Fallon said.She was later interviewed at the scene by state police and workers from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. They urged her to take precautions since the monkeys had not been quarantined and monitored.Fallon went to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, where she received her first dose of a rabies vaccine and was prescribed anti-viral medication for two weeks.The shipment of cynomolgus monkeys, commonly known as crab-eating or long-tailed macaques, arrived in the United States via John F. Kennedy International Airport from the island nation of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. They were destined for an unnamed, CDC-approved quarantine facility. The monkeys are considered highly valuable for experimental research, each worth as much as $10,000. Demand for them has increased during the coronavirus pandemic to aid in vaccine development, prompting some scientists to argue that the U.S. should keep a strategic reserve similar to the U.S. government's grain and oil stockpiles.During the search for the three escaped monkeys, state police had warned the public not to assist in looking for the animals or come into contact with them. The CDC provided technical assistance to state police in managing the response to the incident.Fallon received a letter from the CDC, obtained by The Daily Mail, urging her to "seek immediate medical attention" if she had any contact with a loose monkey."Nonhuman primates and humans are naturally susceptible to many of the same diseases," the CDC explained in its letter.One of the diseases spread by long-tailed macaques is the herpes B virus, which can be transmitted through saliva, feces or urine. Infections, though extremely rare, can lead to the development of blisters and potentially life-threatening complications if left untreated, according to the CDC. "Because the monkey did hiss at me, and because there was monkey feces around, and I do have an open cut, they just want to be precautious," Fallon said of the treatment she's received.Others who may have been exposed or in close contact with the monkeys also are advised to seek medical attention.The CDC wrote in its letter that the surviving monkeys will be quarantined and monitored for infectious diseases for at least 31 days before their release.Animal rights group PETA has been sharply critical of how the incident was handled, including the exposure risk to humans and the decision to euthanize the escaped monkeys without providing an explanation. The trailer separated from the truck and three monkeys escaped, according to the crash report.Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Andrea Pelachick said Friday that the vehicle was carrying "a hundred monkeys."Temperatures in Montour County plunged into the single digits Friday night as authorities searched for the monkeys. Early Saturday, troopers said one monkey was still unaccounted for. Part of that announcement included changes in the new year for groups of travellers who were exempt from entry requirements, such as truck drivers.As of Jan. 15, unvaccinated or partially vaccinated Canadian truck drivers, among others, entering the country must get a PCR test outside of Canada within 72 hours of planned entry; get tested when they arrive; and then self-test on Day 8 of a mandatory 14-day quarantine period. Canada Unity, an anti-public-health-mandate group, organized the truck convoy to Ottawa. Dr. Rasnick described how Paardekooper charted a roller coaster of
adverse events patterns, not random, but highly variable. They went up
and down, forming patterns. “He was able to show that they had done a
dosing regimen where the earliest ones had highest toxicity, some a lot
less toxic…This is exactly what any scientist wants to see, this volume
of data. These companies are working in concert so they did not interfere with each other’s results. The toxicities are very specific, and they come sequentially.”
”All
of that non-randomness was the key. As soon as you see that… if I was
on a jury I wold convict those people of grievous bodily harm and
willful homicide.”
I asked what he knew about Paardekooper.
“He’s
not a PhD yet,” Dr. Rasnick said. “He’s at Kingston University, in
London. We’ve had exchanges, he answers my emails promptly. He reminds
me of….well, he’s not beholden to anybody. I knew something like that
could be done if somebody had all that data. It’s a huge, extraordinary
effort. If it was only a few thousand data points that would be one
thing, anybody could do that, but this is about a million data points.

(Nathan Denette/The Canadian Press)-The Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine can now be stored at typical refrigerator temperatures in Canada for weeks longer than previously thought, which could have major implications on the rollout of vaccines across the country and around the world.Health Canada announced Wednesday it had authorized a submission from Pfizer-BioNTech to allow the vaccine to be stored at temperatures of between 2 C and 8 C for up to a month — up from the previous five days.The move comes after the European Medicines Agency (EMA) recommended the change to the "more flexible" storage conditions for the vaccine on Monday, saying it could have a "significant impact" on the deployment of vaccines throughout the European Union.The EMA said unopened, thawed vials of the vaccine can be stored at temperatures of between 2 C and 8 C for a total of 31 days, up from the previously approved five days, after it analyzed additional data from Pfizer on the stability of the vaccine. CBC News pressed Health Canada on Monday about whether it would authorize a similar request from the company here, but a spokesperson for the federal agency said the submission was still "under review."Health Canada then updated its guidance Wednesday, allowing for thawed Pfizer vaccines to be kept at fridge temperatures for up to one month. Vials thawed at room temperature (up to 25 C) for 30 minutes must be used immediately, according to the vaccine's product monograph. A spokesperson for Pfizer Canada said Wednesday the company made the request for the storage temperature changes to Health Canada on May 10, based on new data from stability studies that confirmed the quality of the vaccine for up to 31 days. The vaccine is typically transported at temperatures between –80 C to –60 C in Canada. The company says the formulation of the vaccine remains unchanged following the approval, adding that the extended storage period is effective immediately and applies to all current and future batches in Canada."This approval allows significantly more flexibility in the distribution of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine to clinics across the country while maintaining our ability to deliver large volumes on a consistent basis," Christina Antoniou, Pfizer Canada's director of corporate affairs, told CBC News."Given the importance of enhancing the distribution and administration process on the ground, Pfizer and BioNTech will continue to explore additional potential solutions to meet vaccination needs around the world."Dr. Zain Chagla, an infectious diseases physician at St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton and an associate professor at McMaster University, says changes to how the thawed vaccine is stored could break down barriers to access in Canada — especially as second doses roll in.He says a longer storage time and more stable temperature would allow family physicians, homeless shelters, pharmacies, jails, pop-up clinics and eventually schools to keep Pfizer vaccines longer and potentially administer more doses.Dr. Isaac Bogoch, an infectious diseases physician at Toronto General Hospital and member of Ontario's COVID-19 vaccine task force, said the change in storage temperature would also make the vaccine easier to transport outside Canada's major urban centres."By mitigating these cold chain limitations, you can just more readily get this vaccine out to more places," he said. "It would have helped with decentralizing the vaccine rollout and it took a month or two before we could start [doing that]," he said. "This could have very well started — even for the high risk groups — decentralizing it and really getting it into places where the vaccine is hard to reach." While an adjustment to the length of time the Pfizer vaccine can be stored and the more manageable temperatures for distribution could give Canada more flexibility in its rollout, the global benefits could be even more significant.Alyson Kelvin, an assistant professor at Dalhousie University and virologist at the Canadian Center for Vaccinology and the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization in Saskatoon, says the change in recommendations are "exciting.""It will have a global impact, especially in light of the recent problems plaguing AstraZeneca," she said, referring to the rare but serious blood clots that can occur after that COVID-19 vaccine. "The increased stability will allow the Pfizer vaccine to be more easily accessible in remote locations across the world." As India sees record COVID-19 cases, experts say Canada should do more to expand global vaccine access-Chagla says it could also allow for the Pfizer vaccine to be transported more easily to countries experiencing devastating surges of COVID-19, such as India, which recorded the highest number of deaths in a single day of any country on Tuesday."From a global standpoint it's huge … you could really expand how you do a vaccine campaign globally," he said. "As long as you can transport it to point X and then put it in refrigeration temperature you have a lot more options." Bogoch says we could potentially see this vaccine transported on "the back of a motorcycle" or the "back of a lorry" in smaller clinics in developing nations. "This really helps because you can mobilize this vaccine more readily in lower resource settings outside of bigger centres. I think that's the key point," Bogoch said. Kelvin says she hopes the potential change in storage conditions could even bring down the cost of the Pfizer vaccine since ultra-cold temperatures of up to –80 C may not be necessary for shipping. The Pfizer vaccine is estimated to cost about $19.50 US per dose in the United States, a price that Kelvin says is "astronomically" higher than the AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine. It ranges from between $2 and $5 US per dose.

A nationwide protest is planned against the federal government's COVID-19 vaccine mandate for truck drivers.A growing number of truck drivers plan on disrupting and blocking circulation on Quebec roads to protest the federal government’s latest vaccine mandate imposed on the trucking industry.From coast to coast, truck drivers against COVID-19 vaccination regulations have gathered under the pan-Canadian banner ‘Convoy for Freedom 2022.’Thousands of truck drivers plan to slowly converge and meet on Parliament Hill on Jan. 28.The spokesperson for the Quebec continent, Joanie Pelchat, says the province’s convoy will begin at Canada-U.S. border crossings.The drivers behind the cause plan to drive below the speed limit, or “slow-roll,” to denounce what they describe as an unfair practice, Pelchat said.As of Saturday, unvaccinated foreign national truck drivers are no longer allowed to cross the border into Canada. Canadian truck drivers still have a right of return, but must test and isolate for 14 days.The U.S. will also tighten its border restrictions this coming Saturday.The Canadian Trucking Alliance says 10 to 15 per cent of drivers in the industry are currently unvaccinated.The mandate would therefore take an estimated 12,000 Canadian truckers and thousands more from the U.S. off cross-border shipping routes.More than two-thirds of the $650 billion in goods traded annually between Canada and the United States travels on roads.The online fundraising page for the national event has already raised close to $580,000. The goal is to reach $700,00.Donations, according to the online posting, will go towards the costs of fuel, food and lodging to help ease the pressures of “this arduous task.”“It’s a small price to pay for our freedoms. We thank you all for your Donations and know that you are helping reshape this once beautiful country back to the way it was,” the post reads.Protests have already erupted across the country.On Monday, drivers of 18-wheelers snarled border traffic in Manitoba for several hours, inconveniencing motorists.The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) says it is aware of the upcoming event and is monitoring the situation, according to Marythe Bolduc, spokesperson for the provincial police.Bolduc warns all who voluntarily disrupt traffic are in violation of the traffic safety code and could face hefty fines.

Hundreds of truckers set off from British Columbia to Ottawa on Sunday to protest a federal vaccine mandate despite the urgings of the country's largest trucking union to comply.The protest has been dubbed the "Freedom Rally" against the federal mandate for cross-border truckers, which went into effect on Jan. 15.Canadian truck drivers now need to be fully vaccinated if they want to avoid a two-week quarantine and pre-arrival molecular test for COVID-19 before crossing into Canada.The Canadian Trucking Alliance and the American Trucking Associations say up to 26,000 of the 160,000 drivers who make regular trips across the Canada-U.S. border are likely to be sidelined as a result of the vaccine mandate.It sparked a movement online to protest the mandate, with a GoFundMe raising money for the trucking rally raising over $2.5M as of Sunday."The goal is we're going to get [to Ottawa] by next Friday, the 29th, and demand these mandates get stopped," said rally attendee Candace Hill on Sunday.Hill was speaking from Delta, B.C., where supporters and truckers had gathered before setting off on their cross-country trip.The protesters were supported by anti-vaccine-mandate protesters throughout the province, including in Kamloops in B.C.'s Interior.Candice Camille, a photographer who attended the Kamloops rally, said she was pleasantly surprised by the turnout there."For me, the mandates need to change to fit our society's lifestyle and people's freedoms," she said."[The mandates should also] give the people the protection and the support on the other side, the people who feel like they need that protection and support."Trade associations on both sides of the border have said the restriction would put additional strain on supply chains amid the latest COVID-19 surge and severe worker shortages.But the Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA), a federation of the country's trucking unions, put out a statement on Saturday strongly disapproving of the protest.The statement says that the CTA's members should choose to hold an organized protest on Parliament Hill instead of disrupting public roadways and border crossings for over a week."This regulation is not changing so, as an industry, we must adapt and comply with this mandate," said CTA president Stephen Laskowski in the statement."The only way to cross the border, in a commercial truck or any other vehicle, is to get vaccinated."Laurent Flambourari, a truck driver and instructor at PBX Logistics in Burnaby, B.C., said the protests are a "bit too late" given the vaccine mandate went into effect a week ago."You have the total right to not get vaccinated. But again, that has an impact on your life and the consequences which comes along," he said.
