WHEN ARE THE 500 MILLION MIGRATING BIRDS IN ISRAEL IN THE SPRING TIME.(GET READY ISLAM TO BE BIRD SEED FOR THESE BIRDS)
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/m0bXU5Xqc5M
The 500 million migratory birds in Israel during the spring arrive from Africa and head toward Europe and Asia, with the peak migration occurring in March and April. While migration starts in late February, the most intense movements, particularly of birds of prey, storks, and pelicans, occur during the third week of March and continue into April.
Key Details on the Spring Migration
Peak Period: Mid-March through April.
Main Migration Route: The birds use the Great Rift Valley, which includes the Hula Valley and Eilat, acting as a "bottleneck" where millions of birds fly through the narrow land bridge.
Best Spots: The Hula Lake Park (Northern Israel) and the Eilat Birding Center (Southern Israel) are primary locations for observing the migration.
Key Species: Hundreds of thousands of white storks, along with black kites, raptors, and pelicans, pass through over these months.
uration: The spring migration runs from late February and continues into June, though the heaviest traffic is in March/April.

The 500 million migratory birds fly over Israel in the fall between late August and mid-December. The peak migration period for the autumn, when the highest volume of bird traffic occurs, is typically October and November.
Key Fall Migration Details
Location: The Hula Valley (Agamon Hula Park) in northern Israel is the premier spot to witness this phenomenon.
Timing: Migration starts as early as late June with some waders, but intensifies from mid-August through November.
Peak Festival: The "Annual Hula Valley Bird Festival" is usually held in November to align with the peak migration traffic.
Key Species: Many birds of prey (raptors), including honey buzzards and steppe eagles, cross during this time, along with massive flocks of storks and cranes.
While roughly 500 million birds pass through in the autumn on their way to Africa, the same number crosses again in the spring (mid-February to May) on their way back to Europe and Asia.

JEREMEIAH 49:23-27
23  Concerning Damascus.(SYRIA) Hamath is confounded, and Arpad: for they have heard evil tidings: they are fainthearted; there is sorrow on the sea;(WAR SHIPS WITH NUKES COMING ON SYRIA) it cannot be quiet.
24  Damascus is waxed feeble, and turneth herself to flee, and fear hath seized on her: anguish and sorrows have taken her, as a woman in travail.
25  How is the city of praise not left, the city of my joy!
26  Therefore her young men shall fall in her streets, and all the men of war shall be cut off in that day, saith the LORD of hosts.
27  And I will kindle a fire (NUKES OR BOMBS) in the wall of Damascus, and it shall consume the palaces of Benhadad.(ASSADS PALACES POSSIBLY IN DAMASCUS)

Iran vows to stand firm against fresh sanctions and US-Israeli ‘conspiracies’Defiant statement comes after supreme leader orders government to address soaring prices, and president says gas price hikes will be necessary to cover drop in trade-By Agencies and ToI Staff Today, 3:14 pm

The Iranian government pledged on Saturday to stand firm against US sanctions and what it called US-Israeli “conspiracies,” after the Islamic Republic’s leaders acknowledged its economy was hurting. In a statement carried by state media, the Iranian government said diplomacy and defense were “complementary, coordinated and inseparable” tools for protecting the country’s national interests, security and territorial integrity. The government said it would pursue both tracks simultaneously and focus on curbing inflation, creating jobs, supporting domestic production and gradually reducing dependence on the US dollar.US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent had on Monday laid out plans for the “economic asphyxiation” of Iran, warning of dire consequences for countries that do not join the American campaign. The new measures build on a sanctions regime by the US and allies that has been in place since 2018, when US President Donald Trump withdrew from an international deal struck with Tehran on its nuclear program.Washington has warned countries to cut business ties with Iran or face secondary sanctions, though the US Treasury Department stopped short of imposing penalties against major Iranian trade partners such as China and India, which could have repercussions for the US and global economies. The Treasury on Friday imposed sanctions on Egypt’s Banque Misr for doing business with Tehran, proposing a rule that would cut off the bank’s branches in the United Arab Emirates from dollar transactions. Egypt’s central bank said it and the foreign ministry were in contact with US officials concerning the matter, adding the measure was limited to Banque Misr UAE’s US dollar transactions with correspondent banks only. The US also issued sanctions targeting an entity based in Hong Kong and a person linked to Iran’s Bank Melli, according to a notice on the Treasury website Friday. The sanctions drive compounds the toll of the war on Iran’s economy, where annual inflation hit 66% last month.Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei — who has not been seen publicly since he was injured in the initial February 28 attack that killed his father and predecessor Ali Khamenei — called on Iran’s government on Friday to tackle the economic hardship.“There is the need to seriously address the chain of economic and livelihood challenges, such as inflation, unemployment, management of prices and the market for goods and services,” according to a written statement attributed to Khamenei.Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian also acknowledged in an interview with state media on Friday that sanctions were hurting Iran’s economy.“Some say sanctions have no effect at all; to those people, I really don’t know what to say,” the president said Friday, adding: “We are in a war situation, and we must accept these wartime conditions.”According to Pezeshkian, Iran’s exports and imports had fallen by 25 to 35 percent in recent months as a result of the US blockade on Iranian ports, though he said Iran was able to sell about 90 million barrels of oil during the short-lived US-Iran memorandum of understanding in June.Pezeshkian said the price of gas should be increased in Iran to account for the fall in trade.“We should raise the price of the third-tier quota… For example, from 5,000 tomans to 10,000 tomans,” he added. That quota refers to one of several consumption rates that determine the price an Iranian consumer is charged. Iran, a major oil producer with some of the world’s cheapest fuel, has for years heavily subsidized gas, making any changes to pricing politically sensitive.Pezeshkian had told state media Wednesday that the new US sanctions “will not achieve anything.”“We will stand firm against economic pressures, as we have done so far and will continue to do,” Pezeshkian told state media. However, Iran’s Vice President Mohammad Jafar Ghaempanah said that same day that the US blockade on Iranian ports had prevented his country from importing enough gas to cover a shortfall in domestic production. The US launched its blockade in April in response to the continued Iranian blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, which previously carried about a fifth of the world’s commercial oil shipments. US-Iran peace talks have faltered over control of the strait.Iran blockaded the strait early in the bombing campaign that the US and Israel launched on Iran on February 28 in a bid to destabilize its regime and destroy its ballistic missile and nuclear programs.

US military families ride ‘roller coaster of emotions’ over six months of Iran war-Extended deployments, disrupted communications, financial strain and fears for loved ones have compounded pressures on relatives of troops in the Middle East By Julia Harte Today, 2:15 pm-AUG 29,26

Reuters — Since the United States went to war with Iran six months ago, Courtney Sanders has been helping soldiers’ families fill the gaps left by their loved ones. There are school pickups to coordinate, lost incomes to supplement — and the ever-present separation anxiety.“It’s like being on pins and needles all of the time,” Sanders said. She leads the Chicagoland chapter of Blue Star Families, the nation’s largest nonprofit serving military families, and her own daughters are in the US Navy. They have served in various overseas locations over the past six months, including the Middle East. The US has more than 50,000 troops stationed across the region and has deployed thousands of additional Marines and sailors to support the war effort. Eighteen US service members have been killed in the conflict and more than 750 wounded.During the war’s on-and-off fighting, shuttle diplomacy and failed peace talks, military families have experienced a “roller coaster of emotions,” Sanders said. “The moment that you feel you’re able to take a breath, you get gut-punched again.”These are familiar pressures for the partners and children, mothers and fathers, of American troops. But the suddenness of the Iranian conflict, and its fitful pace, have had a compounding effect, relatives told Reuters. In a Blue Star Families poll of some 200 active-duty military families in early March, 81% reported elevated stress from the Iran conflict. The group has responded by stepping up its programming, creating online resource hubs, hosting webinars and in-person meet-ups, and matching military spouses going through a deployment for the first time with those who have been through it before. Many service members’ deployments have been extended unexpectedly. The USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier went more than 200 days without a port call — a modern-day record, according to Democratic lawmakers — and military outlets reported suicide attempts and declining morale among its 5,000 sailors and Marines. US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the reports “completely misrepresented” the conditions on board. Some military families find themselves in financial straits.National Guard members, for example, often work regular jobs when they are not deployed. The sudden loss of their main paycheck can make it hard for those left behind to keep food on the table, Sanders said.“There is a huge misconception in the civilian world that if you are in the military, all of your bills are taken care of,” she said. “And that is just frankly not true.”In a statement, the Pentagon said: “We see these families [and] we hear their concerns. We will do whatever is necessary to provide the resources, assistance, and stability they need and deserve during these challenging times.”‘A lot of emotions’Shannon, an Army spouse and mother of three in North Carolina who requested Reuters use only her first name for security reasons, tries to tune out the news and the political debate surrounding the war.In February, her husband deployed to the region with five days’ notice and could only contact her sporadically for the first several months.Although they have maintained near-daily communication since June, “there are a lot of emotions,” Shannon said, “especially when people are dying over there.”Her children started therapy over the summer. She tries to be strong in front of them, but cries sometimes when they’re not around.Soon after her husband’s deployment, Shannon joined an Army-sponsored soldier-and-family “readiness group” within her husband’s unit, helping organize meal trains and other support for family members in need.“Every day is not going to be a great day, but you’ve gotta just keep going and keep yourself busy,” she said.In Virginia, Pat, a Navy spouse who also asked to be identified by her first name for security reasons, has tried to keep life as normal as possible for her children, who are in middle and high school.Since her husband deployed about five months ago, Pat said, her neighbors have been “amazing” about helping with kid pickups and other chores. Her family wears red on Fridays — a show of support for deployed service members — and so do many of her children’s classmates, even those without military connections.Pat’s husband has deployed before. She was pleasantly surprised this time to discover his ship had Wi-Fi, making communication easier.Still, her family is grappling with the uncertainty of when he will return.“Having older kids and knowing that dad wasn’t there to see those sporting events, some of that’s been a little emotional,” she said. “But my kids are very resilient.”

37 killed in Ukraine after Russian attack sparks fire at warehouse near Kyiv-Zelensky says criminal negligence investigation opened, ‘ammunition cannot be stored near homes’; two girls reported killed in 3rd straight night of drone strikesBY Dan Peleschuk Today, 4:13 pm

KYIV, Ukraine (Reuters) — At least 37 people were killed after a Russian drone strike on a Kyiv-area warehouse sparked a detonation, officials said on Saturday, as Moscow’s air attacks on the Ukrainian capital and surrounding region dragged into a third straight day.Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky vowed to punish those responsible for the warehouse explosion late on Friday, which caused one of the highest death tolls in months and appeared to be the second such occurrence in two months.Dozens were injured and more than 370 people evacuated from the area of the strike in the village of Myla, Zelensky said.Nearby infrastructure suffered “significant damage,” he added, including residential buildings and a facility providing care for the elderly.“Those who allowed this to happen must be held accountable for their decisions,” Zelensky wrote on X. “There are regulations in place – ammunition cannot be stored near homes or other residential areas. Appropriate conclusions will certainly be drawn.”Russia has escalated its air war on Ukraine, using more ballistic missiles and jet-powered drones that are difficult to shoot down.Nine other regions had been targeted in overnight strikes by Russia, Zelensky added, saying Kyiv in particular was under “virtually non-stop attack” from high-speed drones. On Saturday, sirens blared throughout the morning for a third straight day as Ukraine’s air force warned of new waves of drones approaching the capital. The sound of air defenses could be heard booming across the sky.Kyiv region governor Tymur Tkachenko said a 14-year-old girl was killed in a morning drone strike on the Boryspil district. In Kyiv, a 2-year-old girl was killed by a downed drone, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Saturday.Strikes in and around Kyiv on Thursday and Friday had damaged warehouses and homes, part of what some Ukrainian officials said was a campaign aimed at “paralyzing” the city of several million.Friday’s blast follows a similar incident in the Kyiv-area town of Vyshneve last month, when 10 people were killed and hundreds of houses damaged after a strike triggered secondary explosions.“In the fifth year of full-scale war, we have no right to allow a repetition of tragedies like the one that occurred in Vyshneve, and this one in the Bucha district,” Ukraine’s Prime Minister Sergiy Koretskyi, who visited the site of Friday’s blast, posted on Telegram.

Trump says U.S. makes deal to control 65 billion barrels of Venezuelan oil reserves-U.S. president touts agreement as 'biggest oil deal in world history'
The Associated Press · Posted: Aug 28, 2026 7:31 PM EDT | Last Updated: 11 hours ago

U.S. President Donald Trump said Friday that his administration has entered a sweeping agreement with Venezuela that, if realized, could give the U.S. access to vast amounts of the South American country's untapped oil reserves, at cost.Trump in a social media post announced the agreement he said was negotiated by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and Venezuela's interim President Delcy Rodríguez."The United States of America has just entered into an Agreement with the Country of Venezuela on, THE BIGGEST OIL DEAL IN WORLD HISTORY!" Trump wrote.Rodríguez's government in a statement said the deal involves the development of 17 fields with a proven potential of 65 billion barrels. It said the agreement could draw $100 billion US in investment into Venezuela's oil industry and yield over $209 billion US in taxes for Caracas.Rodríguez in a posting on Telegram predicted the deal "will have a significant impact on our nation's revival."The agreement allows for the United States to partner with an unnamed private operator in Venezuela to create a new private company to take hold of the reserves, according to a U.S. official familiar with the contours of the deal.Trump administration tells prosecutors to avoid criminal probes of acting Venezuelan president.U.S. pressure on Venezuela hasn't eased, even as world's attention turns to Iran-The official, who was not authorized to comment publicly and spoke on the condition of anonymity, added that Rodríguez granted the company 100-year rights to develop the oil fields. The deal gives the United States 55 per cent effective output of the new private company — including an ownership stake and rights to buy oil at cost. The company would be the second largest corporate holder of proven reserves after Saudi Aramco, according to the official. The announcement of the deal comes nearly nine months after the U.S. military at Trump's direction carried out an operation to capture Venezuela's then-president Nicolás Maduro and spirit him to the United States to face federal narcoterrorism and drug trafficking charges.U.S. gas prices put pressure on Trump-Trump faces mounting pressure to address high gas prices as the war in Iran reaches a six-month milestone with no conclusion in sight. The U.S. has tapped its strategic petroleum reserves, which in early August fell below 300 million barrels, down by more than 100 million barrels since the start of 2026.The U.S.-Israel war against Iran has led to a dramatic slowdown of Gulf oil moving through the Strait of Hormuz, which about 20 per cent of the world petroleum passed through prior to the conflict. The average price of gas in the U.S. stood at about $4.09 US a gallon on Friday, according to AAA. Who is Nicolás Maduro, Venezuela's recently captured president? A significant drop in U.S. gas prices tied to the agreement should not be expected immediately. Experts have repeatedly warned that a substantial boost in Venezuelan oil production will not happen quickly as repairing and expanding infrastructure takes years and requires billions of dollars.Persuading big American oil companies to return to the region could face headwinds given the political uncertainty and decades of badly damaged infrastructure.Trump wants oil companies in Venezuela-Days after the ouster of Maduro, Trump gathered oil executives at the White House and called on them to rush back into Venezuela. Executives expressed interest in the opportunity but there was also a measure of caution given their past experience in the country.U.S. President Donald Trump is urging top oil executives to move quickly on developing Venezuela’s vast oil reserves. But few seem eager to jump in with both feet in the days after U.S. forces seized Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.Darren Woods, CEO of ExxonMobil, the largest U.S. oil company, said at that moment he saw the country as "un-investable."But Trump has insisted that his administration has brought a measure of stability to Venezuela.Trump has argued that Venezuela stole U.S. oil when former Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez moved decades ago to nationalize hundreds of foreign-owned assets, including those owned by American oil companies.Rodríguez, in one of her early moves after taking power, signed a law that opens the nation's oil sector to privatization and reversed a bedrock tenet of the self-proclaimed socialist movement that has ruled the country for more than two decades.Rubio said on X that the agreement would usher in billions in private investment into Venezuela and lead to lower gas prices in the United States."This deal is a huge win for both the American and Venezuelan people," Rubio posted. The oil bought from the new company would go toward filling the U.S. strategic petroleum reserve and toward military use, according to the U.S. official.Venezuela has one of the largest oil reserves in the world, with an estimated 303 billion barrels of crude oil in the ground. That's about 17 per cent of the world's supply, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.Unlike other parts of the world, where geologists have to search for untapped oil, the reserves under Venezuela's soil are largely mapped and known, experts say.But because of dilapidated infrastructure, the country only produces about 1 per cent of the world's oil.

FIRES AND EXPLOSIONS

REVELATION 8:7
7 The first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up.

JAMES 1:11
11 For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withereth the grass, and the flower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways.

The Hebrew noun accurately translated “oven” refers to a “baking oven” as distinct from a kiln or smelting furnace—both of which burn much hotter. (The Hebrew nouns for “kiln” or for “smelting furnace” are more likely to appear in contexts of God's wrath or judgment.)
21 They have roused me to jealousy with a non-god, they have exasperated me with their idols. In my turn I shall rouse them to jealousy with a non-people, I shall exasperate them with a stupid nation.
22 Yes, a fire has blazed from my anger, it will burn right down to the depths of Sheol; it will devour the earth and all its produce, it will set fire to the footings of the mountains.
23 I shall hurl disasters on them, on them I shall use up all my arrows.

6 By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed.
7 By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.

Daniel chapter 10 provides us with a particularly fascinating incident from the life of the prophet Daniel. The incident has to do with answers to prayer and why those answers sometimes get delayed. In Daniel’s case, his answer was delayed for three full weeks.
12 Then said he unto me, Fear not, Daniel: for from the first day (3 WEEKS EARLIER) that thou didst set thine heart to understand, and to chasten thyself before thy God, thy words were heard, and I am come for thy words.(THIS SEEMS TO ME TO BE MICHAEL THE ARCH ANGEL ISRAELS WAR ANGEL OF PROTECTION.) THAT CAME TO DANIEL.
13 But the prince (TERRITORIAL DEMON OVER IRAN) of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days:(3 WEEKS) but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia.
14 Now I am come to make thee understand what shall befall thy people in the latter days: for yet the vision is for many days.(THE POINT HERE IS THAT SAME TERRITORIAL DEMON THAT STOPPED DANIELS PRAYER FROM BEING ANSWERED FOR 3 WEEKS-IS STILL OVER IRANS TERRITORY THAT LEADS THE LEADERS OF IRAN). THATS WHY IRAN WILL NEVER STOP MAKING NUKES TILL ISRAEL IS OFF THE FACE OF THE EARTH. WITH THIS TERRITORIAL DEMON CONTROLLING THE MINDS OF KHAMENEI AND THE LEADERS IN IRAN.

Rare August rain expected in Israel, but forecasters dampen projections of heavy downpours-After earlier predicting highly unusual deluge and potential flooding, meteorologists now say storm system will remain mostly over sea, but some showers still expected into SundayBy ToI Staff Today, 12:21 pm-AUG 29,26

Rare August rainfall was expected in Israel on Saturday evening into Sunday morning, though early predictions of heavy rain and potential flooding were tamped down as a storm system headed toward the country was expected to largely remain over the Mediterranean.Light rains were expected mostly in northern Israel and its center, though scattered showers could reach the northern Negev desert region in the south.Previously, the Israel Meteorological Service (IMS) had warned of considerable precipitation on Saturday, saying heavy rain, lightning, thunder and hail were expected in some areas, with risks of flash floods and treacherous driving conditions. The highly irregular weather conditions were attributed to this year’s brewing supersized El Niño — a phenomenon that occurs every two to seven years, during which surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean warm up and the global jet stream is disrupted. The weather pattern typically results in warmer temperatures across the globe, drought in regions including South and Southeast Asia, Australia and Southern Africa, and heavy rainfall in others including the southern parts of South America and the United States.Scientists have been expecting a very strong event during the northern hemisphere fall and winter 2026-27.In July the IMS warned that in Israel, the phenomenon may manifest in urban flooding, strong winds and extensive lightning storms. It has said extreme life-threatening events were a “low probability” but would have “severe potential impact.”

Nepal Flash Flood LIVE Updates: 734 Bodies Recovered, 275 Indians Among Nearly 2,500 Still Missing-DTV News Desk World News Aug 30, 2026 14:58 IST-Published On Aug 29, 2026 08:18 IST

Nepal Flash Flood 2026 LIVE Updates: Nepal has been reeling under the impact of devastating flash floods along the country's border with Tibet that have so far killed more than 600 people and left thousands missing.A glacier collapse led to a sudden massive flood in the Bhote Koshi River in the Rasuwa district bordering Tibet on Wednesday, causing widespread damage. At least 750 bodies have so far been found in Nepal and Tibet, with over 2,000 people still unaccounted for, including 275 Indians.Nepal Flash Flood LIVE Updates: Indian Ambassador Meets Team That Will Help In DNA Samples-Naveen Srivastava, the Indian ambassador to Nepal, has met the Indian forensic team that will help in the analysis of DNA samples of flash flood victims in Rasuwa.Met the members of Indian Forensic Team that arrived on 4th relief flight to Kathmandu. They will be working with their Nepali counterparts to support the analysis of DNA samples of those who lost their lives in the tragic flash flood in #Rasuwa.Nepal Floods Live: 100 Trapped In Tunnels-More than 100 workers are believed to be trapped inside multiple hydropower tunnels in Nepal. The Nepali army inserted a pipe into one of the tunnels at the Trishuli 3A hydroelectric site late on Saturday and started sending air through it. Overnight rain and rising river waters, however, have hampered rescue efforts at that site. Those trapped were among 933 missing workers from hydropower projects on the rivers.India, which has extensive experience in such rescues, has sent an 11-person specialised team, while China has also sent a nine-person tunnel team to help.Nepal Floods Live: About 100 Pilgrims From Tamil Nadu Still Missing-About 100 of the nearly 319 individuals who travelled from Tamil Nadu through to Nepal were still untraceable and missing following the flash floods there, state minister A Rajmohan has said. As many as 219 persons are safe and secure, the Minister for Information added.Nepal Flash Floods Live Updates: 1.5-Metre Deep Burial Pits-The burial pits are being dug to a depth of 1.5 metres to ensure the bodies can be easily exhumed later. A 40-centimetre gap has been maintained between them to ensure that only the specific body identified via DNA matching can be retrieved. The bodies are being packed into bags with an identification number. A concrete platform with a signboard is being constructed at each burial site that will display the body's identification number.Plans are also in place to document the burial process through video and photography and to geo-tag the burial site.

Scientists fear Nepal's disaster is just a glimpse of the carnage climate change could cause-Global warming contributes to conditions that make a glacier collapses, floods more likely, experts say-Nick Logan · CBC News · Posted: Aug 29, 2026 4:00 AM EDT | Last Updated: 5 hours ago

Geoscientist Jakob Steiner says it looks like "someone took a knife," cut a 1,300-metre-wide chunk from the lower part of a glacier on Nepal's Himalayas and "dropped it off the mountain cliff."The researcher at the University of Graz in Austria says the "blast" of ice, rock and sediment that came crashing down 1.2 km, from a height of 5,000 metres above sea level, temporarily dammed the river below and created a lake. Once that lake filled with the enormous amount of water released from the glacier, Steiner says the dam breached and unleashed the violent torrent that pummeled downstream villages on either side of the border and buried them in mud.Additional lakes formed in the aftermath of the initial calamity could soon rupture as well, potentially worsening the death and destruction. So far, at least 579 people have been killed, with about 1,400 others unaccounted for in Nepal, including 32 Canadian citizens and permanent residents.Indigenous people in the area have long warned climbers that the mountain, Langtang Lirung, is an "angry mountain," Steiner told CBC News Network in an interview from Dhaka, Bangladesh. "They are proven right every year, again and again."Some climate scientists are cautious about prematurely linking human caused-climate change as the sole trigger of this specific collapse. But experts who research both glacier hydrology and the effects global warming is having on the frozen parts of the planet known as the cryosphere say this was the kind of catastrophe they've been warning about for years, particularly in the Himalayas.Nepal flash flood death toll climbs to 579, with 32 Canadians, permanent residents among missing-John Pomeroy, director of the University of Saskatchewan's Centre for Hydrology, says horrific events like this are becoming much more frequent as the effects of climate change are "destroying our natural infrastructure.""And it's happening in a wink of an eye in Earth's history and too fast for humans to easily adapt," he said. How climate change set the stage for tragedy-Manjueet Dhakal, a climate scientist in Nepal's capital Kathmandu, had passed through the devastated region on a family trip just days before the collapse. It was hard for him to see areas he had just visited completely washed away, including the country's largest solar power generation plant. He says the Himalayas are a "very complicated landmass" that's part of the greater Hindu Kush Himalaya region stretching from Myanmar to Afghanistan and containing more than 63,000 glaciers.Warmer global temperatures, linked to emissions from the burning of fossil fuels, have "stressed" the mountain region," Dhakal said in an interview with CBC's What On Earth. That includes altering precipitation patterns, increasing snow melt, triggering more avalanches and drastically accelerating glacier retreat."The glaciers are disintegrating," said Pomeroy, explaining that the Himalayas have already lost 21 per cent of their glacier coverage in the first quarter of this century as a result of the planet heating up to the point it's at now. It's also thawing the permafrost, which he says is what "holds these high mountains together." "All these things together mean that we'll get events like this every year, somewhere in the world," he said in a separate interview with What On Earth guest host Leisha Grebinski. An entire river valley along the Nepal border was wiped out in seconds... but local radar showed no rain, and it wasn't an earthquake. CBC Meteorologist Johanna Wagstaffe breaks down how a massive glacier collapse triggered a violent inland tsunami—and why geologists warn this unfolding climate disaster isn't over yet.Global concern about glaciers-There was a glacial flash flood in this same Nepal-Tibet border region last year, but it wasn't the result of a massive piece of a glacier breaking off. It was due to what's known as a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF), something that happens frequently around the world — including in Canada. GLOFs happen when water held back at the edge of a glacier by a natural dam made of ice and sediment, called a moraine, overflows or breaches the barrier.A glacial lake in B.C. is at risk of bursting — again. How climate change has raised this risk-What caused the 'shocking' landslide that destroyed a Himalayan village? Sometimes that's due to sudden and intense downpour, like the one that destroyed a village in India's Himalaya region in August 2025. Other times it can be the result of an avalanche or landslide at a higher elevation that crashes into the pooled water. They can also happen when pooling meltwater dammed by the glacier itself eventually drains from the bottom of the basin, where the ice meets the bedrock. This happened at the Place Glacier, near Pemberton, B.C., in June. While GLOFs are naturally occurring, they have become more of a threat, according to research published by Nature in 2023, because global warming is contributing to greater ice loss and subsequently increasing the volume of glacial lakes. That study estimated some 15 million people are exposed to the risks of GLOFs within 50 kilometres of where they live — largely in the Himalayas, but also the Andes region of South America and the Alps in Europe. It's a "critical situation" in places like the mountain villages of Nepal, says Slobodan Simonović, director of engineering works with the Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction and professor emeritus at Western University in London, Ont. He says those communities are "nested" very close to the streams and rivers fed by melting water from glaciers, leaving them more exposed. The damage and loss of life these floods can cause is tremendous, Simonović says, noting the effects can be long-lasting and create "a bad situation on so many fronts."Glaciers are a vital source of water for drinking and irrigation, and he says a collapse like this week's means communities downstream of the initial deluge will have a limited supply in the coming seasons.A new lake formed from debris from the glacial collapse on Wednesday has began to overflow, Nepalese authorities say, posing a new flood risk for areas downstream.Act, don't adapt-Steiner, the geoscientist from the University of Graz, says the disaster in Nepal could have been prevented, but only if governments had "made different decisions 15 years ago on how we use our resources."Though he says "climate change had a role" in this event, Steiner notes that it's also a matter of being better prepared and having early warning.10 Toronto residents on a trek in Nepal unaccounted for after deadly flash floods: non-profit group-He says he and either scientists had been working with Nepalese authorities on this front, but it was difficult because of domestic politics and the fact that it's a trans-boundary area, meaning there needs to be co-operation and co-ordination with Chinese agencies on the Tibetan side of the border.Even with more monitoring and warning systems, the University of Saskatchewan's Pomeroy says we also need to limit further global warming. He says he hopes the scenes from this catastrophe help to "galvanize the world" to work to reduce greenhouse gases rather than just expecting people to adapt to climate change."You cannot adapt to a 20-metre wave of water chasing you down the street that's about to wipe you out."With files from Lauren Pelley, Molly Segal, Jennifer Wilson, Leisha Grebinski, Mark Carcasole and Reuters.

Nepal flash flood death toll climbs to 579, with 32 Canadians, permanent residents among missing-Authorities warn that a newly formed, overflowing lake could trigger further flooding-CBC News · Posted: Aug 28, 2026 4:52 AM EDT | Last Updated: August 28

Thirty-two Canadian citizens and permanent residents are among the nearly 2,000 people missing after the catastrophic flash flood along the Himalayan border between Nepal and Tibet, Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand confirmed Friday.Anand confirmed during a media conference that 579 bodies had been recovered in the area so far and 1,924 people were still unaccounted for. Of those, 517 are foreign nationals, she said.No Canadians are among those confirmed dead, Anand added."Nepal is facing a devastating humanitarian emergency with catastrophic damage," she said.Canada also announced it was providing $5 million to support emergency relief funds to Nepal.Meanwhile, rescuers worked through mud and debris Friday in areas devastated by the flood, continuing the search for those still missing.Nepalese and Chinese authorities also warned of further flooding from a lake that formed upstream after Wednesday's disaster and was already overflowing. They urged people in potentially affected areas to move to safer ground.Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority says 3,742 people have been rescued. The missing include tourists from several countries. Nepalese army spokesperson Brig.-Gen. Raja Ram Basnet told The Associated Press that a team had been deployed Friday to the Upper Trishuli-1 Hydropower Project near the Nepal-China border following reports that people were trapped inside a tunnel."It is complicated to find the entry and exit points of the tunnel because everything has been covered by mud," Basnet said. "Our first priority is rescuing the stranded people."The rescue effort has been challenging, and it's difficult to access some of the communities that have been most affected, Santosh Pandey, Oxfam's humanitarian lead in Nepal, told CBC's As it Happens from Kathmandu."Entire villages, entire communities, have been swept away. There is no one actually in the community to help each other," Pandey said."A lot of public infrastructure has been damaged, a lot of hospitals and health facilities have been completely swept away."It's a very chaotic situation right now."Emergency responders rescued 350 people trapped inside a tunnel, shown in video released Nepal’s Prime Minister’s Office on Friday. Efforts are contuining to aid more than 100 people who are still trapped, after Wednesday’s flash flooding that destroyed villages and infrastructure in Nepal.'We have to find him'As rescuers work to reach remaining survivors, desperate families have crowded around hospitals trying to see if their loved ones can be identified among the hundreds of bodies that have been recovered. At the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, relatives peer at grim images lining a wall outside the forensic identification unit. The photos show the badly battered bodies of victims, including young children who had been pulled from the mud.“I came here because I hope I find [my brother].  I will search until my last breath is gone,” said Nirmala Sapkota Koholi, 49, who lives in the city of Lalitpur, south of Kathmandu. “I have to go everywhere, we have to find him.”A woman dabs her eyes-Koholi told CBC News that her younger brother, Pradip Kumar Sapkota, was working as a driver with a group of pilgrims, including some from the United States and India. He had been on his phone with his daughter at 8:45 a.m. Wednesday. His daughter heard a loud boom and then the call suddenly cut off. They haven’t been able to reach him since.Koholi has been to three hospitals and believes one of the victim photos could be her brother. “He was a very good person. That is why God took him away.”A new lake formed from debris from the glacial collapse on Wednesday has began to overflow, Nepalese authorities say, posing a new flood risk for areas downstream.Red Cross raises alarm about secondary flood-Red Cross officials, at a news conference in Switzerland, expressed concern about a secondary flood and said that the organization's rescue operations were temporarily halted after trucks with relief supplies were were blocked by further flooding."We believe that at least 93,000 people have been affected and are in great need," said David Fisher, head of delegation for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in Nepal.Nepal's Foreign Ministry said on Friday that it appreciated the offers of help from several countries ‌with nationals missing amid the disaster but that it was able to manage the rescue efforts at present.Flood survivors, including injured people, were taken to Kathmandu and other locations. The affected areas are popular with hikers and for pilgrimages to religious sites.Vishnuram Ramaswamy works at a private company in the southern Indian city of Puducherry and said that he last spoke to his mother and two sisters who were on pilgrimage to Mount Kailash on Wednesday morning at 9 a.m."This was the first time they had gone on this pilgrimage and it was something my mother always wanted to do," he said.Satellite still of a river in a valley before flash floods.Survivor sees 'black storm'Customs officer Karbir Gaire is among some of the survivors in Timure, the closest Nepalese village to the border with Tibet.Gaire reached his office around 8 a.m. on Wednesday and was busy working on his computer when he first felt the ground shake."Right after the shake, I noticed a black storm coming towards us," he recalled from Kathmandu, where he is back with family. "We all immediately started running out, and within a few seconds, we were climbing uphill on the opposite side of our office building. I think those 10 or so seconds saved some of us."The disaster started with a glacier collapse that sent ice and rock flowing downstream, and which registered as a magnitude-5.2 seismic event at the U.S. Geological Survey. The science behind Nepal's catastrophic flash floods-An entire river valley along the Nepal border was wiped out in seconds — but local radar showed no rain, and it wasn't an earthquake. CBC meteorologist Johanna Wagstaffe breaks down how a massive glacier collapse triggered a violent inland tsunami, and why geologists warn this unfolding climate disaster isn't over yet.Gaire doesn't remember exactly how many people were in the office when the disaster struck, but his 15 colleagues have gone missing."It was like a Hollywood movie scene. I don't call it a flood, it was a tsunami," he said.Gaire described Timure as a vibrant place filled with government offices, hotels, cafes, banks, primary schools, tea shops and residential buildings, where more than 1,500 people were living. With files from the Associated Press, CBC's As it Happens, and Reuters.

BSI warns AI can reproduce 3D fingerprints from online photo of hands-German agency says ‘your fingerprint is online, without you knowing,’ and even peace sign is a risk-Aug 25, 2026, 12:43 pm EDT | Joel R. McConvey

A warning from the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) highlights an emerging AI-assisted fraud risk  – this one focused on your hands. A post on the cyber agency’s Bluesky account, translated from German, says “attackers can use AI and a 3D printer to create fingerprint copies from photos of your hands.”“Unlike passwords, fingerprints cannot be easily replaced. Therefore, anyone protecting sensitive access with biometrics should not rely on it as their sole security measure.”The warning reflects a broader trend in which AI is reducing the cost and expertise required needed to reproduce biometric characteristics once considered difficult to spoof.Nonetheless, according to the BSI, even throwing a peace sign is enough to expose fingerprint biometrics that sophisticated AI tools can reproduce using 3D printing.A report from ISMG quotes a BSI spokesperson, who says that, “among other things, criminals can use a representation of a fingerprint to create a synthetic fingerprint that is sufficiently similar to the real one and can thus potentially unlock smartphones if those devices lack additional security measures capable of detecting such synthetic fingerprints.”The warning does not suggest fingerprint biometrics are obsolete. Instead, it reinforces a broader industry trend toward layered authentication, combining biometrics with liveness detection, device security and additional authentication factors as AI-powered spoofing techniques become more accessible. A 2020 Cisco Talos study, for example, showed 3D-printed fingerprints could bypass biometric authentication on selected devices under test conditions. As AI lowers the barriers to reproducing biometric traits, the challenge is shifting from preventing spoofing altogether to detecting and mitigating increasingly sophisticated attacks.

Biometrics investment follows demand for digital identity trust-AI fraud, regulation and investor capital are accelerating the evolution of digital trust from point-in-time verification to continuous identity assurance-Aug 29, 2026, 8:18 am EDT | Chris Burt

The biometrics market is entering a new phase. AI-powered fraud, tougher regulation and growing investor confidence are expanding digital identity verification far beyond onboarding, pushing digital trust deeper into financial services, social media, government and the wider internet. This week’s top stories on Biometric Update show the industry responding from both directions. Governments and regulators are raising expectations for identity assurance, while investors are backing companies building the infrastructure to meet them.Carrots and sticks-Meta’s $18 billion settlement, tightening regulation and the rise of agentic fraud are applying pressure across the digital economy. At the same time, acquisitions and funding rounds show investors believe digital identity and trust infrastructure are among technology’s strongest growth opportunities.Digital trust moves beyond onboarding-Incode CEO Ricardo Amper tells Biometric Update that while KYC systems are increasingly prepared to defend against scams carried out with agentic AI, most of the internet is exposed. The company’s recent report makes the case that the opportunities AI provides for automated fraud demand a response from all businesses exposed to social engineering. For those companies that use KYC checks, like financial services and gaming platforms, fraud exposure is increasingly post-login. Deepfake detection is therefore increasingly being implemented after onboarding to deliver continuous financial trust. Continuous trust is also the focus of the latest Biometric Update Podcast episode, featuring FIDO Alliance Executive Director and CEO Andrew Shikiar, who discusses how passkeys, digital wallets and reusable credentials fit into a broader trust ecosystem.Meta’s $18 billion settlement with dozens of state Attorneys General shows that platforms must take responsibility for the experiences of children and teenage users to a greater extent than ever before. The settlement includes third-party testing requirements for accuracy, and aligns with New York, and NIST FATE results, in recognizing that some age assurance methods can meet such targets. The underlying biometric technologies continue to advance as well.Eleven vendors satisfied NIST’s qualification criteria for contactless fingerprint biometrics under the FastCap program: AA Technology, Gambit ID, Idemia, Identy, IDloop, Mentalix, Sciometrics, Synolo, Thales, Tech5 and Veridium. The other side of that coin is the warning from Germany’s BSI that advances contactless fingerprint acquisition have made new spoof attacks possible. The agency says hackers acquiring fingerprint data from a photo of a person’s hand online can use AI and 3D printing to spoof their biometrics, and notes the importance of PAD.Investment follows the opportunity-DNP’s acquisition of Austriacard for over $400 million, plus close to $100 million in assumed debt, further expands the Japanese company’s global reach following last year’s deal for Laxton. It also gives DNP a broader portfolio of payment and biometric cards, e-signature and eID technologies.Connecting identity verification and fraud detection to decision-making is part of the motivation for Socure’s acquisition of Fravity, following a $156 million funding round. Adding Fravity’s agentic AI capabilities gives Socure a way to extend its RiskOS further into investigations following alerts.Expanding decision-making capabilities beyond identity to verifying data like employment and income is part of the motivation for Checkr’s acquisition of Truv last week. Checkr’s strategy follows the trend toward the convergence of previously distinct markets to enable automated trust decisions.Malaysia ultimately decided against acquiring Datasonic, but the episode underscored how national identity providers are increasingly viewed as strategic assets. The government explored purchasing the company because it sits at the center of Malaysia’s MyKad, passport and biometric identity infrastructure. The week’s news suggests digital identity is evolving from a compliance function into core digital infrastructure. As AI expands both opportunity and fraud, organizations increasingly need continuous trust rather than one-time verification, and investors appear convinced that demand for trusted digital identity infrastructure is only beginning to grow. Please let us know of any podcasts, online video presentations or other content you think we should share with those in biometrics and the digital identity community, either below in the comments or through social media.

Post-quantum security spreads across digital identity infrastructure-Fobi, WISeKey and Atsign add quantum-resistant protections across mobile credentials, PKI, secure hardware and developer platforms-Aug 29, 2026, 7:34 am EDT | Abhishek Jadhav

Post-quantum cryptography is beginning to spread across the digital identity stack, with vendors adding quantum-resistant protection to mobile credentials, PKI, secure hardware and developer platforms.Fobi AI, WISeKey, and Atsign announced updates this week that illustrate how different parts of the digital identity ecosystem are preparing for the transition. In 2024, NIST standardized ML-KEM for shared secrets and ML-DSA and SLH-DSA for digital signatures. But traditional identity systems use public-key cryptography to protect personal and sensitive information and authenticate credentials, devices, and transactions.Information captured today could eventually be decrypted. Separately, vulnerable signing algorithms could enable attackers to forge credentials that appear authentic. At the credential layer, Fobi describes AltID 3.0 as a mobile platform that converts KYC results into credentials that confirm identity, age, authorization, location, and time without disclosing the personal data.WISeKey advances the proposition toward a trust infrastructure by connecting its WISeID platform to the company’s PKI and SEALSQ post-quantum hardware. The proposed Know Your AI model would give an AI agent a verifiable identity that describes its operator, model, permissions, and policies.Atsign moves from a platform positioning to a more defined implementation. It uses X-Wing, combining ML-KEM-768 with X25519 for hybrid key establishment, and ML-DSA-65 for signatures. The public roadmap says the post-quantum primitives have entered its cryptographic library, with SDK and authentication migration staged through November. X-Wing remains an Internet Draft.Meanwhile, security vendor Trellix advises organizations beginning post-quantum migration to identify vulnerable systems, assess supplier readiness, test hybrid cryptography and modernize certificate infrastructure. The announcements reflect a broader industry shift. AuthID has named PQC signature algorithms for its biometric authorization, IOTA has released hybrid signatures for verifiable credentials, and NIST commissioned work to prepare federal identity credentials for post-quantum migration. The transition is expanding across the identity stack, from credentials and PKI to secure hardware, communications and developer tools, but products remain at different stages of maturity. While post-quantum cryptography can protect keys, records and digital signatures, it does not verify whether a document, biometric or AI agent itself can be trusted. Organizations evaluating PQC offerings will increasingly need to distinguish between cryptographic protection and broader identity assurance.

Peru gives digital ID equal legal status to physical credential-New framework gives the digital DNI the same legal standing as the physical credential while enabling interoperable digital wallets and verifiable credentials-Aug 20, 2026, 8:26 am EDT | Lu-Hai Liang

Peru is moving beyond electronic identity documents toward a true mobile digital identity ecosystem after approving the legal framework for its new digital national identity document (DNId), which will have the same legal status as the physical credential. The regulations establish the legal, technical and operational rules for issuing and using the DNId while explicitly allowing other compliant digital wallets to participate in the ecosystem alongside Reniec’s own Peru Pass application. The framework under Peru’s Digital Government Law lays the foundation for interoperable, secure and citizen-centered digital public infrastructure while moving the country from electronic identity documents to a mobile digital credential. As an official statement says: “Reniec strengthens the process of modernization of the State, promotes the digital transformation of public services and lays the foundations for interoperable, secure and citizen-centered Digital Public Infrastructure.”Reniec is Peru’s National Registry of Identification and Civil Status, established under Law No. 26497 as an autonomous public body. It has full legal authority to manage registry, technical, administrative and financial matters. Reniec is solely responsible for maintaining and updating the country’s central registry of individuals, and for recording events related to their legal capacity and civil status.Reniec will begin issuing a new national digital ID (DNId) free of charge during its rollout. The DNId will have the same legal status as the traditional physical DNI and can be used for both in‑person and online transactions. The digital ID will be introduced gradually within 30 working days of August 1, 2026. It is designed for use on digital devices. The DNId will exist alongside physical and electronic IDs rather than replace them.Reniec explained that the system will allow citizens to verify their identity securely, with data authenticated and integrated into official systems. The DNId is meant to make identification faster, more reliable and easier to use, with citizens able to access services without concerns about the validity of their documents. It’s all part of Peru’s broader digital transformation strategy, which wants to reduce paper documents and streamline civil, commercial and administrative procedures.Peru Pass-The Peru Pass, meanwhile, is the official digital wallet app provided and managed by Reniec  “without prejudice to other digital wallets that meet these standards,” according to an official document seen (and translated into English) by Biometric Update. With this app, Reniec had help collaborating with the Centre for Digital Public Infrastructure (CDPI). In the past week Peru Pass went live on Android with 63 million verifiable credentials across national identity (24 million), birth certificates (34 million) and marriage certificates (five million). The national DPI sharing effort has more than 22 verifiers to help with affordable housing, scholarship applications, financial inclusion and transport access.“Huge congratulations to Héctor Saravia of Reniec for driving this effort in just over 7 months! Kameshwari (Kamya) Chandra, cofounder and CEO of CDPI, wrote on LinkedIn. “And on our ecosystem side: you know who you are. It took a village to craft our largest DaaS implementation to date. Thank you for your efforts to make this real for the citizens of Peru!”“This entire achievement has been made possible by the support of CDPI, thank you for trusting Reniec,” responded Saravia, director for digital certification services at Reniec, in a comment  under Chandra’s post. The law shows the way-While Reniec has been legally empowered — as it has been given constitutional autonomy and “legal personality” — the laws also bind it to certain responsibilities, duties, and set out certain recommendations in the way it is handled, implemented and communicated. For example, Peru’s government has approved regulations for managing digital identity under Legislative Decree No. 1412, known as the Digital Government Law. These rules define the digital national ID (DNId) as an official identity document issued by Reniec for use on digital devices. The DNId can verify a person’s identity both in person and online, and may include extra features allowed by law.Reniec is responsible for setting the requirements, security standards, and procedures for issuing the DNId. The digital ID will exist alongside the conventional and electronic versions of the DNI, without replacing them. But a later decree, issued in July 2025, requires Reniec to fully implement the DNId within one year. This includes approving the operating rules and beginning issuance of the digital ID.Additionally, the resolution assigns Reniec’s Directorate of Certification and Digital Services, along with its IT Office, to carry out the measures it sets out. Reniec’s Communications and Press Office is tasked with informing the public about the resolution. It also orders that the resolution be published in the official newspaper El Peruano and on Reniec’s website, along with the attached guidelines. The digital national ID (DNId) is designed to give citizens full control over their personal data. When proving identity, only the information strictly required for the procedure is shared, and access is authorized through biometrics or a PIN, strengthening privacy protections.Verification is done using temporary QR codes backed by cryptographic safeguards to ensure authenticity. Screenshots or photos of the DNId are not valid for identification. To obtain a DNId citizens must already hold a valid physical or electronic ID, have a compatible smartphone, and pass an identity validation process that combines biometric checks, personal data and document verification. Parents can also request DNIds for their minor children. Peru chose Switzerland-based Tech5 as its biometrics technology provider. The system follows a trust model with three actors: Reniec as the issuer, public and private entities as verifiers, and citizens as holders of credentials. Verifiers must integrate Reniec’s tools, request only essential data, and protect personal information under existing laws. With these guidelines Reniec fulfills the requirements of Supreme Decree No. 098‑2025‑PCM, which ordered the agency to finalize DNId rules and begin issuing the digital ID by July 31.

NIST picks 11 contactless fingerprint biometrics providers for certification testing-Contactless biometrics capture initiative IDs a set of leaders in nascent tech-Aug 21, 2026, 1:06 pm EDT | Chris Burt

NIST has completed the first phase of its vendor engagements under the Fast Capture (FastCap) program for evaluating contactless fingerprint technologies. Eleven biometrics providers have joined the program under a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) following successful qualification testing. The testing stage included cooperative evaluations of the vendor technologies’ biometric acquisition capabilities, refinement of performance metrics and prototype testing for contactless rapid tenprint scanners. The 11 vendors that satisfied the qualification test criteria are: U.S.-based AA Technology, Gambit ID, which has offices in Canada and the U.S., Idemia, Identy, IDloop, Mentalix, Sciometrics, Synolo, Thales, Tech5 and Veridium. The qualification holds up these biometrics developers as global leaders in contactless fingerprints. The qualification testing was carried out based on NIST Special Publication 500-339, “Specification for Certification Testing of Contactless Fingerprint Acquisition Devices, 1.0,” published in April, 2023.The specification emphasizes the “fundamental departure” that contactless fingerprint biometrics represent from legacy contact-based capture technologies. The steps, procedures and software for the tests, along with the properties to be measured, are defined in NIST SP 500-336. SP 500-336, “Specification for Interoperability Testing of Contactless Fingerprint Acquisition Devices, v1.0,” was published in 2022.The same NIST document explains the creation of standardized test fingers for use in comparing the 2D images created by contact-based fingerprint scanners and the 3D images captured by contactless biometric scans.Properties to be measured (measurands) include image entropy, signal to noise ratio, scale factor computations and NFIQ image quality assessment.

Fayda digital ID nears 50M enrollments as adoption reshapes Ethiopia’s economy-Aug 24, 2026, 2:12 pm EDT | Ayang Macdonald

Launched in 2023, Ethiopia’s national digital ID rollout has gained traction over the last three years as seen not only in the growing number of those registering for the ID, but the palpable impact it is making. The rollout is speeding up with 49.1 million enrollments already completed as of August 24, thanks to the deployment of 12,000 biometric registration kits across the nation, according to figures from the Ethiopia National ID Program (NIDP). So far, 150 agencies have been integrated with the system, with over 194 million digital Know Your Customer (eKYC) verifications to date.According to the Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation (EBC), the digital ID process is “moving quickly,” and is considered a critical factor as the country looks forward to building a comprehensive digital economy. Fayda has been framed as a major pillar in the implementation of the Digital Ethiopia 2030 strategy. The broadcaster references Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed who has described Fayda as an important tool for the country’s development, with its contribution to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) expected to reach seven percent by 2030, “all while safeguarding data privacy and ensuring economic sovereignty.”According to the EBC, Fayda’s “impact is already being felt across the country” as it is “actively bringing millions of previously unbanked and marginalized individuals into the formal financial system.” The outlet adds that the ID “is accelerating banking and mobile money transfers and streamlining everyday business operations.”As part of these inclusion efforts, the ID system has prioritized the registration of women as well as refugees and other internally displaced persons (IDPs) which, according to the World Bank, make it possible for them to “access financial services, open bank accounts, receive loans, and participate in economic activities.”These developments show Ethiopia is not just bent on expanding access to digital ID (it has a plan to reach 90 million by 2027), but is also making sure it enables people to access a wide range of services. According to officials, the ID is not just an administrative tool, but a key foundational digital public infrastructure intended to make life easier for users.Recently, Ethiopia took a step further in its push towards strengthening and modernizing its identity infrastructure as the national ID authority was transformed into a commercial government-owned enterprise, Faydaverse. Its inauguration took place early this month with the mandate to support initiatives aimed at developing, operating, and scaling trusted digital public infrastructure.

Ofcom fines geoblocked porn site, signaling tougher age assurance enforcement-UK regulator fines Fapello for past failures to implement age assurance, showing geoblocking alone may not shield platforms from Online Safety Act enforcement-Aug 24, 2026, 4:06 pm EDT | Joel R. McConvey

A moment of gratitude for the accidental comedy to be found in UK regulator Ofcom’s ongoing efforts to enforce the Online Safety Act (OSA). With the threat of stiff penalties putting heat on adult content providers to use strong protection, its latest missive gives a hard smack on the wrists to Fapello.com, a pornography streaming website that a Confirmation Decision says “has failed to comply with its duties under section 12 of the Act to protect children from encountering pornographic content through the use of highly effective age assurance.”The case of Fapello sees Ofcom imposing a retroactive fine, covering noncompliance between July 2025, when the OSA’s requirements took effect, to November 26, 2025. Fapello subsequently introduced, then withdrew age assurance measures, and ultimately decided to walk away from the UK market: in January 2026, it geo-blocked its site in the UK.But that four-month period of chin-stroking is set to cost Fapello 600,000 pounds (about $818,000)  in fines from Ofcom, “in respect of its failure to comply with the duties under Section 12 of Part 3 of the Act.”Fapello further wronged Ofcom when it failed to call back, after Ofcom asked for information regarding its qualifying worldwide revenue and a full list of the services it operates. Ignoring Ofcom adds another £30,000 ($40,900) to the tab. And, “in the event of continuing non-compliance, Ofcom will impose a daily penalty at a rate of £200 per day starting from 9 July 2026,” until the problem is fixed (or until September 7, 2026, whichever comes sooner).Ofcom moves from guidance to penalties-What is significant in Ofcom’s action is not Fapello itself (which sounds like a rather pleasant Italian ice cream dessert). The Confirmation Decision says that, during the relevant period, the site did not implement age assurance classified by Ofcom’s Guidance as being highly effective at determining whether or not a particular user is a child. In this, it is surely not alone. And therein is the greater significance: Ofcom’s enforcement efforts are catching up with OSA legislation. The regulator has faced pressure from major platforms taking the brunt of its legislative whip, demanding an even playing field for porn platforms of all sizes. Pornhub continues to argue that age checks have pushed users to websites that do not comply with the OSA and are not protecting children from harmful content. Per a report from the Financial Times, it recently wrote to UK parliament arguing that, as of June 2026, non-compliant sites occupied seven out of the top 10 search results for ‘free porn.’According to Aylo, Pornhub’s parent company, as of last year traffic to Pornhub had fallen 77 per cent since the OSA came into effect. It insists device-level checks are the most effective way to prevent children from accessing explicit content, and notes Ofcom’s data showing that the use of VPNs in the UK has almost doubled since the OSA took effect. The law has unquestionably hurt Aylo and its compliant peers. (Ofcom says all of the UK’s top 10 porn sites and the majority of the top 100 are now compliant.) But the Fapello action shows that it is now acting on cases of noncompliance by comparatively smaller sites that may not be ongoing, yet nonetheless represent a period of violation and therefore trigger fines. For Fapello, the bill has come due. Surely others will follow. Ofcom, often criticized for weak enforcement, will not be brushed aside. It may simply take time for Ofcom to work through the long tail of non-compliant sites. “The job is not done, and we’ve been clear that further action is needed from the tech industry to increase the effectiveness of age checks to protect children online.”eo-blocking alone may not satisfy Ofcom, says AVPA-The Age Verification Providers Association (AVPA) takes Ofcom’s decision as evidence that it “has clearly developed a more sophisticated position on geoblocking.”In a post on LinkedIn, AVPA says the handling of Fapello shows Ofcom has “accepted that a full UK IP block may be relevant evidence of an attempt to prevent UK access and may mitigate enforcement penalties – but it has deliberately declined to decide whether geo-blocking is legally or technically sufficient to comply with the Online Safety Act.”“In paragraph 3.20, Ofcom says the site ‘remains in scope’ of Part 3 despite the block. That appears to reject Fapello’s argument that geo-blocking automatically removes its links with the UK or takes it outside the Act.” UK users could still be accessing Fapello using virtual private networks (VPNs), and AVPA believes sites that remain scope of the Act due to the number of UK users accessing with a VPN “need to use additional, available measures to flag VPN users that are likely to be in the UK – browser signals, content choice, latency.”In this, it aligns with policy in the UK that puts the onus on platforms to prevent age check circumvention.

Norway targets facial recognition in smart glasses as privacy concerns grow-AI-powered eyewear is forcing governments and employers to rethink surveillance, workplace policies and biometric privacy-Aug 27, 2026, 12:27 pm EDT | Joel R. McConvey

Norway is moving to regulate smart glasses, including a possible ban on facial recognition, as the controversial technology seeks a foothold  in the commercial market.A BGNES report citing AFP quotes Digitalisation Minister Karianne Tung, who says “we are seeing privacy and people’s personal integrity come under pressure from new technologies. That is why I want us to regulate smart glasses and similar devices more strictly than before.”“There is a clear trend toward combining artificial intelligence with cameras and microphones built into glasses, headphones, hats and other objects we use in everyday life. We must prevent this equipment from being used to monitor other people in public places.”Tung plans to put together an expert advisory group to counsel the government on privacy concerns around the technology.Meta’s smart glasses shift surveillance into everyday life-Meta has sold roughly 7 million smart glasses and continues to expand the platform with AI capabilities. They have major brand partnerships, celebrity endorsements and the marketing heft of Silicon Valley behind them. Recent patents describe facial recognition, gaze tracking and expression analysis, while previous reporting has shown the company has experimented with “NameTag,” a system capable of identifying people through onboard cameras. Technically launched in 2021, they have since been refashioned and equipped with Meta’s AI model. Smart glasses now lurk at the edges of everyday life; they are not ostentatious, nor easy to differentiate from normal sunglasses. These days, anyone sporting black Ray-Bans or Oakley wraparounds might be recording you without your knowing. There has already been significant pushback to Meta’s wearables plans. The potential for misuse by law enforcement has been noted, as has the probability that the tech will be used to film people without their knowledge or consent. BGNES quotes Finn Myrstad, head of digital policy at the Norwegian Consumer Council, who says, flatly, “the potential for abuse is enormous.” Reverse image lookup firm PimEyes has warned of “irreversible consequences” for privacy should facial recognition end up in smart glasses. As Myrstad notes, “Meta already has this technology, and it is only a matter of time before it is incorporated into the glasses.”  For a time, the latent code for facial recognition capability was included in Meta smart glasses; the company only removed the code when the media noticed.Meta has also explored hardware-based privacy controls. The Independent reports that Meta has been working on a so-called kill switch for the glasses that would limit filming capability. A patent describes a “hardware privacy mute circuit,” which would “provide tamper-resistant privacy controls that cannot be compromised through software exploits.” In other words, recording capabilities would be physically disabled in applicable situations – a clear upgrade from the current system: a light that flashes when the glasses are recording, and can be easily turned off.Employers become the next battleground-Analysis in Startland News looks at the inevitable arrival of smart glasses into the workplace. The tech “creates legal and operational considerations” that may get lost in the larger privacy debate. These include employees who request smart glasses as a disability accommodation – which, the piece notes, can lead to litigation, as in the case of a Disney employee who was prescribed smart glasses for light sensitivity caused by postpartum conditions and astigmatism, told she could not wear them at work, and has sued Disney as a result. Moreover, there is the issue of patchwork regulation. Federal, state and local laws may impose various privacy requirements, and workplace privacy rights vary from case to case. For instance, “California’s Invasion of Privacy Act (CIPA), among other things, generally prohibits intentionally recording a confidential communication without the consent of all parties to the communication.” And a pending law, SB 1130, would prohibit the operation of “a wearable recording device to capture sound or video of any other person in any area within a place of business where the person has a reasonable expectation of privacy, unless the person operating the device has the explicit consent of that person.”Likewise in Illinois, where the Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA) requires private entities to provide written notice and obtain a written release before collecting, capturing and storing biometric data.As such, employers should consider reviewing the applicable laws and policies in their jurisdiction, and “should not assume that a general workplace monitoring policy addresses all privacy concerns associated with smart glasses.”The policy challenge extends beyond Meta-Norway’s proposal reflects a broader shift. Smart glasses appear to be  moving from experimental gadgets to mainstream consumer devices, raising new questions about biometric surveillance, workplace privacy and whether existing laws are equipped to regulate always-on AI cameras.Norway’s proposed restrictions illustrate how the debate has evolved beyond facial recognition accuracy to the architecture of everyday surveillance. Smart glasses are part of a broader shift in which cameras, AI and biometric identification are moving from controlled environments into ordinary consumer devices. As wearable AI becomes more common, governments and employers will increasingly face the question of whether existing privacy laws are equipped for a world in which anyone can carry an ambient biometric sensor on their face.

GEO donations coincide with expanding ICE detention and biometric monitoring contracts-48% of GEO's revenue now comes from ICE detention and biometric surveillance contracts-Aug 24, 2026, 5:31 pm EDT | Anthony Kimery

A subsidiary of GEO Group, whose ICE business spans detention, biometric monitoring and location intelligence, gave more than $1.4 million in July to a political committee supporting President Donald Trump. The payments by GEO Reentry Services came within days of GEO announcing two new ICE detention contracts expected to generate a combined $165 million in their first full year of operations.A Biometric Update review of ICE procurement records found that one of those agreements is substantially larger than GEO’s public description suggested. The government estimates the five-year requirement for GEO’s Rivers Facility in North Carolina at nearly $457.1 million and awarded it without full and open competition after receiving seven responses to earlier market research.Another wholly owned GEO subsidiary, BI Incorporated, operates ICE’s nationwide Intensive Supervision Appearance Program (ISAP) using electronic monitoring, biometric reporting and case management to supervise people on the agency’s non-detained docket.BI also holds one of ICE’s new skip-tracing contracts, allowing it to use government case information and commercial data to help locate people ICE is trying to find. The political spending was first reported by The Lever and subsequently by The New York Times after MAGA Inc. disclosed its July receipts to the Federal Election Commission (FEC).GEO Reentry gave MAGA Inc. $1 million on July 16, three days after GEO announced a five-year agreement for the 1,188-bed Big Horn Facility in Hudson, Colorado. It gave another $413,000 on July 31, two days after GEO announced its agreement for the 1,320-bed Rivers Facility in Winton, North Carolina. The July payments were not GEO Reentry’s first to MAGA Inc.FEC records and campaign finance disclosures show the subsidiary gave the committee $1 million in October 2025, another $1 million in March and another $1 million in April. Including the July payments, GEO Reentry has given MAGA Inc. more than $4.4 million since October. There is no evidence that the political spending caused ICE to award GEO government business. The White House rejected such a connection when questioned by the Times, saying allegations that political donations influenced federal contract awards were false. The Department of Homeland Security said federal contractor selection is heavily regulated and follows those requirements.ICE’s detention expansion accelerates-The underlying Rivers procurement records nevertheless add detail to what GEO received and how ICE selected the company.GEO announced July 29 that Rivers was expected to generate approximately $80 million in revenue during its first full year. An ICE justification for awarding the work without full and open competition, made public August 11, puts the government’s estimated five-year value at $457,091,724.ICE projected costs rising from $79.44 million in the first year to $97.92 million in the fifth. The contract covers detention housing, guards, meals, medical care and transportation.ICE said GEO was the only responsible source capable of meeting the agency’s requirements within the necessary timetable. That determination followed market research rather than a competitive solicitation. ICE issued a Request for Information on May 28, 2025, seeking detention capacity for as many as 1,500 people within 150 miles of Richmond International Airport and requiring a facility capable of becoming fully operational within three months.ICE received seven responses.GEO proposed Rivers, a former federal prison it owns that had been idle since 2021. The facility is about 105 miles from Richmond International Airport, and GEO said it could reactivate it within 90 days.At least one other RFI respondent also said it could meet that timetable. A submission proposing the former Augusta Correctional Center in Craigsville, Virginia described the shuttered state prison as capable of becoming operational within 90 days and about 90 minutes from Richmond International Airport. But Augusta required renovations to meet ICE detention standards. ICE ultimately concluded that Rivers was the only facility capable of satisfying its complete requirements quickly enough. The public justification does not provide a detailed scoring comparison showing how ICE tested the Augusta respondent’s assertion that it could also be ready in 90 days. It provides the government’s conclusion that the required renovations and other work made the alternatives infeasible within its timetable.ICE began seeking the additional detention capacity in May 2025, more than a year before GEO Reentry’s July 2026 payment to MAGA Inc.ICE awarded GEO a sole-source contract internally estimated at nearly half a billion dollars on July 29. GEO announced the award that day. Two days later, GEO Reentry gave $413,000 to Trump’s political operation.Biometric Update also found that ICE’s justification explicitly connects the Rivers requirement to policies ordered by the Trump administration. The document cites Trump’s January 2025 immigration executive orders and the Laken Riley Act and says ICE needs approximately 60,000 additional detention beds to support expanded immigration enforcement, bringing projected nationwide capacity close to 100,000 beds. The second July contract followed a similar political spending sequence.GEO announced July 13 that it had entered into a five-year ICE agreement for Big Horn in Colorado. GEO expects the facility to generate approximately $85 million in its first full year. Three days after the announcement, GEO Reentry gave MAGA Inc. $1 million.Federal award data put the Big Horn contract ceiling at approximately $528.7 million, although a contract ceiling is not the same as the amount ICE will ultimately spend.GEO’s ICE business extends beyond detention-Through BI Incorporated, which GEO acquired in 2011, the company operates ISAP, the principal component of ICE’s Alternatives to Detention program. People enrolled in ISAP live outside detention but can be required to submit to electronic monitoring and case management while immigration proceedings or removal cases continue.ICE awarded BI the current ISAP V contract on September 30, 2025. The original award was valued at approximately $1.017 billion, with current procurement records placing its ceiling slightly above $1.02 billion. The work goes considerably further than supplying ankle monitors.ICE’s solicitation requires enrollment and orientation, case management, home and office visits, residence verification, court tracking, GPS monitoring and management of alerts generated by electronic monitoring systems. One of the procurement’s principal technical documents is titled “Detailed GPS Biometric Reporting Monitoring System.”The biometric component includes mobile identity verification.BI’s SmartLINK technology allows a participant to conduct scheduled check-ins through a smartphone or BI-issued device. BI markets its mobile monitoring system as supporting facial comparison and liveness detection intended to verify that the person checking in is the enrolled participant.
ICE has said SmartLINK facial matching compares a submitted photograph against enrollment images. A possible mismatch generates an alert for review rather than automatically determining that the participant has violated the program.Earlier versions of ISAP also used biometric voice verification for telephone reporting, but ICE told bidders for ISAP V that telephonic voice reporting was no longer required.BI’s dedicated ankle-worn devices support continuous location reporting, geographic zones and tamper alerts, while wrist-worn technologies can also provide location information and identity-related authentication functions. Those capabilities do not mean ICE activates every available function for every participant. Monitoring levels and technologies can vary by individual case. The scale of the program has nevertheless changed sharply.GEO told investors this month that approximately 184,000 people were enrolled in ISAP, with about 54,000 wearing GPS ankle monitors, up from roughly 17,000 in early 2025. Approximately 116,000 were receiving case management services. The categories overlap and cannot be added together.BI’s other major recent ICE assignment takes the company beyond monitoring people already reporting to the government. From biometric reporting to location intelligence-ICE awarded BI one of its nationwide skip-tracing contracts in December 2025. BI’s indefinite-delivery vehicle, 70CDCR26D00000005, carries a ceiling of approximately $121.84 million. It was one of multiple awards under a competition that drew 51 offers. The work gives BI a different role in immigration enforcement. Rather than monitoring people already in contact with ICE, the contracts expand BI’s role into helping locate individuals using government records and commercial datasets.ICE procurement documents describe contractors receiving government-furnished case information containing identifiable data and using it with commercial sources to determine where people are living. The work can include automated and manual research, address verification and physical observation.GEO describes BI’s service as “enhanced location research” using identifiable information, commercial data verification and physical observation. GEO said BI began performing the work in March.ICE accounted for 48 percent of GEO’s $2.63 billion in 2025 revenue, illustrating how detention, biometric monitoring and location intelligence have become central to the company’s business.

Somalia pushes for stronger adoption of eAqoonsi digital ID app-Aug 25, 2026, 11:00 am EDT | Ayang Macdonald

omalia’s National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) has made a fresh call on citizens to continue adopting the eAqoonsi digital ID app in order to get easier access to public and private services. The app, which is available on Google Play and Apple app store, was launched last year as part of efforts by the ID authority to expand access to the country’s national digital ID.The mobile application, labeled by authorities as “a modern, secure, and efficient alternative to the physical national ID card,” allows citizens to carry their national ID digitally on a smartphone, and provides a digital credential with the same legal validity as the physical card. It already has more than 50,000 downloads. In a recent post on X, NIRA re-emphasized the importance of the app, stating: “The eAqoonsi App makes it easy for you to download your digital national ID. Legally, it is equivalent to the physical ID itself.”In April, there were concerns that the eAqoonsi digital ID app was not inclusive enough. Many users complained not being able to access their IDs via the app due to challenges such as poor connectivity and digital illiteracy.Somalia has, since 2023, been implementing a World Bank-funded biometric national ID project which aims to strengthen the country’s legal identification system and revolutionize the way citizens get public and private sector services delivered to them.Efforts in the last three years, led by NIRA, have yielded some fruits with more than one million digital IDs already issued as of November last year. Speaking at the country’s national ID conference held that month, the representative of the UNDP in the country Lionel Laurens described the ID system as a “cornerstone of state-building.” He praised the government’s commitment and South-South cooperation which, he said, has forged the country’s legal identity journey.Somalia has set an ambitious target of issuing at least 15 million digital IDs by 2029 as the government hopes to mature its digital public infrastructure implementation. Authorities say the country also needs an estimated $125 million to be able to fully implement the program.
