HOARDING OF GOLD AND SILVER

JAMES 5:1-3
1 Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you.
2 Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten.
3 Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.

REVELATION 18:10,17,19
10 Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come.(IN 1 HR THE STOCK MARKETS WORLDWIDE WILL CRASH)
17 For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off,
19 And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate.

EZEKIEL 7:19
19 They shall cast their silver in the streets, and their gold shall be removed:(CONFISCATED) their silver and their gold shall not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the LORD: they shall not satisfy their souls, neither fill their bowels: because it is the stumblingblock of their iniquity.

MARK OF THE BEAST (engraved microchip in your hand or forehead)

REVELATION 13:16-18
16 And he(FALSE POPE) causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, (SLAVE) to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:(CHIP IMPLANT)
17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.(6-6-6) A NUMBER SYSTEM

REVELATION 16:1-2
1 And I heard a great voice out of the temple saying to the seven angels, Go your ways, and pour out the vials of the wrath of God upon the earth.
2 And the first went, and poured out his vial upon the earth; and there fell a noisome and grievous sore upon the men which had the mark of the beast, and upon them which worshipped his image.

I KNOW THIS MARK WILL BE A MICROCHIP IMPLANT UNDER THE SKIN. LETS LOOK UP WHAT THE WORD MARK SAYS IN REVELATION 13:16-18, 14:9,11, 15:2, 16:2, 19:20, 20:4-ALL THESE VERSES FROM THE BOOK OF REVELATION SPEAK OF THIS DICTATORS MARK. NOW LETS SEE WHAT IT MEANS FROM STRONGS EXAUSTIVE CONCORDANCE OF THE BIBLE. UNDER MARK PAGE 684.MARK UNDER MARK. THE OLD TESTAMENT IS UNDER HEBREW AND THE NEW TESTAMENT IS UNDER GREEK. SO WHEN WE LOOK UNDER REVELATION 13:16-17 WE SEE IT IS UNDER GREEK, SO WE GO TO GREEK IN THE BACK SECTION AND GO TO 5480 TO SEE WHAT IT SAYS THIS MARK WOULD BE. SO LETS GET TO IT.MARK IN STRONGS GREEK 5480 XAPAYUA CHARAGMA, KHAR-AG-MAH: FROM THE SAME AS 5482: A SCRATCH OR ETCHING, I.E STAMP (AS A BADGE OF SERVITUDE), OR SCULPTURED FIGURE-(STATUE):-GRAVEN, MARK FROM 5482 XAPAE CHARAX, KHAR-AX; FROM XAPAOOW CHARASSO (TO SHARPEN TO A POINT; AKIN TO 1125 THROUGH THE IDEA OF SCRATCHING); A STAKE, I.E (BYIMPL.) A PALISADE OR RAMPART (MILITARY MOUND FOR CIRCUMVALLATION IN A SIEGE): - TRENCH FROM 1125 YPAPOE GRAPHO, GRAF-0; A PRIM. VERB; TO "GRAVE", ESPEC. TO WRITE; FIG. Latinstimulus, etc.; German stechen, English stick, sting, etc.; Curtius, § 226)), a mark pricked in or branded upon the body. According to ancient oriental usage, slaves and soldiers bore the name or stamp of their master or commander branded or pricked (cut) into their bodies to indicate what master or general they belonged to, and there were even some devotees who stamped themselves in this way with the token of their gods (cf. Deyling, Observations, iii., p. 423ff); hence, τά στίγματα τοῦ (κυρίου so Rec.) Ἰησοῦ, the marks of (the Lord) Jesus, which Paul in Galatians 6:17 says he bears branded on his body, are the traces left there by the perils, hardships, imprisonments, scourgings, endured by him for the cause of Christ, and which mark him as Christ's faithful and approved votary, servant, soldier (see Lightfoots Commentary on Galatians, the passage cited). Backed by Nvidia and Pfizer, Israeli AI medical startup raises $80m in fresh capital-Tel Aviv-based CytoReason, which uses machine learning to build computational models of human diseases to speed up treatment discoveries, plans to open a US office later this year-By Sharon Wrobel-17 July 2024, 9:50 pm

CytoReason, an Israeli startup that uses artificial intelligence to develop computational disease models for drug discovery, said Wednesday it has secured $80 million in a private funding round backed by US chipmaker Nvidia and pharma giant Pfizer. The funding round was also joined by US medical equipment maker Thermo Fisher and Jerusalem-based venture capital platform OurCrowd.Founded in 2016, CytoReason develops computational technology that serves as a GPS-like mechanism that navigates the immune system. The machine-learning software collects and combines data from a variety of sources, including in-house data and published research on the immune system and other clinical studies, to discover insights into the biology of diseases. The technology then builds a digital, computational simulator of the human body that can be used to predict responses to drugs, thus providing direction as to which ones can best benefit patients.CytoReason says the use of its massive database and AI-led platform helps pharma and biotech companies shorten trial phases and cut development costs, as well as increase the likelihood of drug approval.“The world understands that data alone is not enough, and that the future of data-driven insights is in data modeling,” said co-founder and CEO of CytoReason David Harel. The Tel Aviv-based startup said it will use the freshly raised capital to expand the application of its disease models into additional indications and grow its proprietary molecular and clinical data. It also has plans to establish a US hub in Cambridge, Massachusetts later this year, and hire employees. CytoReason employs more than 120 people, mostly based in Israel,Back in 2022,  Pfizer announced an equity investment of $20 million into the Israeli firm as part of a wider five-year deal worth up to $110 million to license CytoReason’s platform and disease models. The startup is also working with leading global pharmaceutical companies including, French drugmaker Sanofi, Swiss pharma firms Ferring and Roche, and the UK’s GSK.“The rapid expansion of new technologies, like artificial intelligence, holds tremendous potential to help transform what is possible in human health,” said Pfizer chief scientific officer Mikael Dolsten. “Our collaboration with CytoReason leverages its cutting-edge immunology multiomics platform to augment Pfizer’s own R&D capabilities and generate invaluable insights into new drug development pathways for patients.”CytoReason said that six of the world’s top 10 pharma companies use its technology to make data-driven decisions in immunology, inflammation, immuno-oncology, metabolism, and other therapeutic areas.

Nine Israeli startups secure $142 million in funding from EU Horizon program-Israel ranks third in Europe in terms of the number of startups to win funding from the European Innovation Council’s accelerator program, following Germany and France-By Sharon Wrobel-17 July 2024, 7:22 pm

Nine Israeli startups have been selected to receive €130 million ($142 million) in grants from the European Union’s Horizon accelerator program during a challenging period when many young founders and entrepreneurs are struggling to raise essential funds, as the ongoing war with the Hamas terror group has been raging for almost 10 months. The European Innovation Council (EIC) Accelerator granted a total of €411 million to as many as 68 companies chosen from 969 applicants from 17 different countries. Israel ranked third in the number of grant recipients, following Germany and France with 13 companies each.“The high Israeli participation in the EIC Accelerator program highlights the competitive advantage of Israeli startups,” said Shlomi Kofman, International Deputy CEO of the Israel Innovation Authority. “The program allows them to receive funding and mentoring, thereby helping them accelerate their growth and realize their economic and social potential. The EIC Accelerator program offers mixed funding that includes a grant of up to €2.5 million and equity investment of up to €15 million, as well as mentoring and business development coaching to help speed up the growth of startups and transform them into players in the global market.Among the nine Israeli recipients selected by the EIC is Israel’s MediWound Ltd., a maker of a pineapple-based gel to treat burn victims, that will be granted €16.25 million in blended funding.MediWound’s FDA-approved NexoBrid for the treatment of severe burns was used in Israeli hospitals to help victims of the October 7 onslaught get on a path of recovery after Hamas terrorists set their homes on fire. The product enables trained medical staff to perform enzymatic surgery rather than standard surgery to remove eschar, or dead tissue within a wound, including a severe burn. The startup said it will use the EU grant to propel the clinical development of EscharEx, its wound therapy for the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers, which awaits approval by US and European regulatory authorities. With the EU funding, MediWound now expects to “expedite the market introduction of this innovative biologic and its future revenues by four years ahead of the original schedule,” the startup said in a statement.“The EIC’s support recognizes EscharEx’s potential to profoundly impact patients, especially those living with the significant challenges of diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs),” said MediWound CEO Ofer Gonen. “This funding will enable MediWound to develop EscharEx for DFU in parallel with our advanced program for treating venous leg ulcers (VLUs), substantially increasing the overall market.”Netanya-based JaxBio Technologies, a medical diagnostics startup said it will receive a €2.5 million grant from the EIC Accelerator. The grant includes an option for future mixed financing, including an additional €9.1 million from the EU and a matching €9.1 million from other investors. The funding will be used to “expand clinical programs and develop JaxBio’s diagnostics platform to create a simple blood test for making lung cancer detection and management simpler, quicker, and highly accurate,” the startup said.“In the current global climate, where investments in the biotechnology industry are scarce, especially in Israel, this grant significantly supports our ongoing journey towards product development,” said JaxBio founder and CEO Dr. Shahar Zirkin. “This grant, following a rigorous screening process, validates JaxBio’s technology and helps us advance our vision of developing a simple, sensitive blood test for early cancer diagnosis to save lives”.Nurami Medical, a Haifa-based developer of soft tissue repair technology, said it secured mixed financing from the EIC accelerator, which includes a €2.5 million grant and additional equity investment. The biotech startup plans to use the EIC funding to advance the development of its second product, currently in pre-clinical trials, following the launch in the US of its inaugural product ArtiFascia, a biodegradable nanofiber patch for use in neurosurgery. The remainder in the list of Israeli startups winning grants are LightSolver, a creator of a laser-based computer that performs complex tasks at the speed of light; Quantum Transistors Technology, a developer of a single chip quantum processor; RAAAM Memory Technologies Ltd., a developer of on-chip memory technology; Reophotonics, a developer of a digital dispensing system for electronics manufacturing; SpacePharma R&D Israel Ltd, a developer of miniaturized lab technologies for drug discovery and testing in space; and Impact Biotech Ltd, a developer of an immune photo-activated cancer therapy for the treatment of upper tract urothelial cancer. The EIC Accelerator is a funding initiative, which is part of Horizon Europe, one of the biggest EU research and innovation programs. It supports small and medium-sized enterprises that have breakthrough innovation projects that need funding, but the risks involved are too high for private investors alone to invest. It aims to promote and fund discoveries and world-firsts by taking ideas from the lab to the market.Since the start of the Horizon Europe program in 2021, a total of 32 Israeli companies have received grants and investment support under the EIC Accelerator program.“This success places Israel among the top five participating countries in the program,” according to the Israel Innovation Authority.

Asian markets drop with Wall St as Biden sparks fresh chip fears-

Hong Kong, July 18 (AFP) Jul 18, 2024-Asian markets sank with Wall Street on Thursday after a warning from the White House that it would target firms supplying China with key semiconductor technology, and Donald Trump's comments on crucial chip supplier Taiwan. The dollar remained subdued following its latest retreat caused by growing expectations that the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates at least once this year.Firms linked to artificial intelligence have led a surge in equities this year as investors see the sector as the next major growth area, with market darling Nvidia piling on more than 140 percent since the start of the year. The industry has helped push the S&P 500 and Nasdaq to multiple records in the past seven months, helped by the prospect of lower borrowing costs. But the rally took a blow Wednesday when Bloomberg News reported that Joe Biden was looking at imposing strict curbs on firms such as Tokyo Electron and ASML if they continue allowing Beijing access to their chip tech. The report, which comes as he looks to buttress his credentials as strong on China ahead of November's presidential election against Trump, sent shivers across trading floors, sending the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index plunging nearly seven percent -- its heaviest loss since 2020.Nvidia dived more than six percent and Dutch firm ASML collapsed more than 12 percent.Tokyo Electron fell 7.5 percent on Wednesday and a further 9.5 percent Thursday. TSMC shed more than three percent in Taipei.Meanwhile, Trump's comments that Taiwan -- home of the key chip-maker TSMC and other major producers -- should pay the US for its defence caused some geopolitical unease. The fear fuelled a sell-off across Asian equities, with Tokyo and Taipei down at least two percent, while there were also hefty losses in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Sydney, Seoul, Singapore and Manila.Analysts warned that the imposition of more chip restrictions could fuel further selling and lead to a correction in markets, which some warn have become overbought.- 'A big currency problem' -Worries over tech have offset the feel-good mood that has been sparked by recent data and comments from Fed officials indicating they are ready to cut interest rates as soon as September, and possibly again before January. The latest boost for doves came in the central bank's Beige Book summary of the economy, which said there were signs it was slowing."Expectations for the future of the economy were for slower growth over the next six months due to uncertainty around the upcoming election, domestic policy, geopolitical conflict, and inflation," the report said. The prospect of lower rates has weighed on the dollar, while the yen -- which has been battered against the greenback this year -- has won support from bets on a Bank of Japan hike in coming months."Markets are pricing in the Fed to start cutting rates in September, and risks of yen carry trade -- the practice of borrowing low yielding currencies to invest in high yielding currencies -- unwinding are building as yield gap narrows," Saxo researchers said in a note."Recent comments from Trump have also hinted at concerns from US dollar strength."Trump, in Milwaukee for the Republican National Convention, has also weighed in on the dollar's relative strength against the yen and yuan, telling Bloomberg Businessweek "we have a big currency problem" and "I would always notice they fought very hard to keep their currency low".Taylor Nugent, at National Australia Bank, said: "The comments play to the view (that) bilateral trade deficits and currency valuations are a key focus, and tariffs would be a key negotiating tool."Investors are keeping tabs on Beijing, where China's leaders are expected to wrap up a key gathering, with hopes President Xi Jinping will unveil fresh measures to boost the world's number two economy.- Key figures around 0300 GMT -Tokyo - Nikkei 225: DOWN 2.0 percent at 40,277.86 (break)-Hong Kong - Hang Seng Index: DOWN 0.5 percent at 17,652.42-Shanghai - Composite: DOWN 0.6 percent at 2,944.67-Pound/dollar: DOWN at $1.3007 from $1.3012 on Wednesday-Euro/dollar: DOWN at $1.0938 from $1.0941-Dollar/yen: DOWN at 155.92 yen from 156.33 yen-Euro/pound: UP at 84.09 pence at 84.07 pence-West Texas Intermediate: UP 0.7 percent at $83.39 per barrel-Brent North Sea Crude: UP 0.5 percent at $85.49 per barrel-New York - Dow: UP 0.6 percent at 41,198.08 (close)-London - FTSE 100: UP 0.3 percent at 8,187.46 (close)-dan/fox-Nvidia-S&P Global Ratings-TOKYO ELECTRON-ASML Holding-TSMC - TAIWAN SEMICONDUCTOR MANUFACTURING COMPANY-NATIONAL AUSTRALIA BANK-INDEX CORP.

OFIQ report outlines evaluation techniques for algorithm accuracy and reliability.Jul 17, 2024, 5:23 pm EDT    | Abhishek Jadhav

The Open Source Face Image Quality (OFIQ) project, led by the German Federal Office for Information Security, has published a preliminary report detailing its evaluation methodology. The report outlines crucial steps and approaches to ensuring the algorithms’ accuracy and dependability for measuring biometric image quality. The software library is a reference implementation of the ISO/IEC 29794-5 international standard. The development and assessment of the OFIQ algorithms were conducted in two phases – initial implementation and assessment, followed by refinement and enhancement.During the initial phase, the initial algorithms were implemented for a preliminary evaluation to assess their performance in facial image quality. The second phase involved refining and improving the algorithms based on the results of the first phase. The evaluation process started with the collection and development of test sets with ground-truth labels. Algorithms are assessed based on their accuracy in predicting ground-truth labels. For numerical labels, empirical cumulative distribution functions (ECDFs) are used, while binary labels use detection error tradeoff (DET) curves.Error-versus-discard characteristic (EDC) curves are plotted to assess how quality factors affect facial recognition accuracy. The purpose of the EDC assessment is to demonstrate the effectiveness of the algorithms in evaluating facial recognition quality. The best-performing algorithms were subjected to the specific image defect detection (SIDD) track of the face analysis technology evaluation (FATE) Quality by NIST. According to the report, some commercial quality assessment algorithms were tested using the ground truth test sets.Earlier this year, Biometix released a biometric face analysis engine, part of BQAT, the Biometric Quality Assessment Toolbox, which is based on the OFIQ algorithm.

Google Wallet plans for biometric authentication, broad ID document support revealed-Jul 17, 2024, 4:54 pm EDT    | Chris Burt

Google Wallets are expanding from payments and biometric ID documents like mobile driver’s licenses and passports to “Everything else.”An APK (Android Application Package) teardown by Android Authority reveals plans to include automatic identification, scanning and storage of a wide range of ID credentials and other documents in Google Wallet. The “Everything else” option allows scans of documents the user specifies as normal or private. Normal ones, like student IDs and business cards, do not require authentication to be saved or accessed, but private documents such as tax IDs and other government issued credentials will require biometric authentication. The permissions make clear that all processing occurs on the user’s device.Google introduced support for Georgia’s mDL in its digital wallet last year, and U.S. passports just weeks ago.Documents that Google Wallet will soon support include health insurance, loyalty cards, residence permits, vehicle registration, library cards, event tickets and voter ID cards, along with those mentioned above. There is also an “other” category for documents the app can’t recognize, and users can enter those credentials’ information manually. The feature is not available in the production version of Google Wallet, but is expected to be part of the next version update. The update comes against a backdrop of proliferating digital wallets from governments and other technology developers.

Digital ID and SSI to cause radical shift in travel experience by 2035-Panelists at Phocuswright forecast seamless travel experience enabled by biometrics-Jul 17, 2024, 4:12 pm EDT    | Joel R. McConvey

Verifiable digital credentials and digital wallets took center stage at the recent Phocuswright Europe conference in Barcelona, with professionals from the biometrics and digital identity sectors convening to explore how digital ID and decentralized self-sovereign identity (SSI)  is changing the global travel industry. In various panels from the event, executives from Indicio, Amadeus, the EU Digital Identity Wallet Consortium, Neoke, Travlr ID and host PhocusWire, among other organizations, address some of the major challenges, opportunities and technologies powering the radical changes in how we travel and speculate on what the travel experience might look like in 2035.Paradigm shift puts the traveler in charge of their data-Annet Steenbergen, advisor to the EUDI Wallet Consortium, calls the current swing toward digitization and digital ID “a paradigm shift in how we deal online” that is “providing us with the missing identity layer in the digital world.”“And the traveler is in charge. Usually you have to give a lot of data and then you get something back. This time you’re in charge of the data you share. The trust factor has a huge potential because that is a very different way of connecting with a business.”By 2035, say experts, digital wallets will be ubiquitous, search and shopping features will be personalized, bookings will be linked to a traveler’s digital travel credential, and airports will be fully contactless thanks to the wide deployment of biometrics.Francois Blanc, managing director of Amadeus’ Traveler ID, offers a novel metaphor for how biometric ID enhances the travel experience. “A lot of people say digital identity is the cookies of the future – a very respectful cookie because travelers decide to share it with travel players to get a benefit. And if they do that, you have a very respectful way to track travelers along their way because they accept to do that for a tangible benefit.”It is among the more advanced iterations of the great twenty-first century tradeoff of data in exchange for benefits. And given the agitation some people experience at the mere thought of an endless airport queue, the sales pitch is not hard to make.Indico and SITA’s Aruba deployment makes paradise even better: CEO-Heather Dahl, CEO of Indicio, makes a convincing case for the pre-check system Indicio and SITA have deployed at Queen Beatrix Airport in Oranjestad, Aruba. The system lets travelers create a digital travel credential from their passport, which can pre-populate their required embarkation and debarkation cards, and share only the relevant information needed to enter the country legally.Dahl says the system is “functioning beyond what I ever could have imagined. I couldn’t believe how fast it performed.”“Ultimately, will the traveler know they are using SSI? Probably not, and that’s OK. We want them to think, ‘Wow I never expected to blow right through that checkpoint,’ or ‘I never expected that I wouldn’t have to wait in a line’ or ‘I never expected I’d be off the plane and sitting on the beach in 30 minutes.’ That’s the traveler and customer experience that I think ultimately they’ll have.”Startups showcase digital ID infrastructure for travel-Two firms at the conference have been included among PhocusWire’s Hot 25 Travel Startups for 2024. Travlr ID CEO Gee Mann describes the firm’s product as decentralized travel identity infrastructure. He believes “the travel identity is broken” in that it requires repeated verification –  the costs for which ultimately find their way back to the customer – and fails at interoperability. The Travlr ID solution is “a decentralized network of digital identities powered by privacy-centric blockchain powering AI agents,” which Gee concedes is “quite a mouthful.” It means “you can own your identity forever, you should be able to get rewarded for sharing your data, you can manage all your profiles in one place, you can leverage crossborder sharing and you should be able to utilize permission-based AI agents.” In offering these things, Travlr ID aims to create an end-to-end credential management tool that travelers can customize for uses from pre-trip to pre-trip and return.Neoke CEO Vikas Bhola calls the potential use cases for digital ID and wallets “profound,” and says consumers will embrace digital ID once they see the benefits. “There are too many things that can be solved with digital identity – the main point is how do we start, where’s the infrastructure, how can businesses get ready, how can they deploy this at scale. This is the piece that we’re working on, to kind of build the infrastructure that can be easily integrated but is built on standards that really truly unlocks the interoperability that we all dream of.”On YouTube, you can find full versions of the panel Digital Identity is (Nearly) Here, the executive interview Digital Identity in Action, and the Five Minutes of Fame session with Travlr ID.

TFH and Worldcoin announce extensions, but not to lofty signup goal-Jul 17, 2024, 10:42 am EDT    | Abhishek Jadhav

A decision is made to prolong the lock-up period for the Tools for Humanity (TFH) team and investors so that they can access their tokens. The initial three-year lock-up period has been extended to five years, affecting approximately 80 percent of the investors and team members.Under the original schedule, no transfers were permitted for the first year following the Worldcoin protocol launch in July 2023, with subsequent gradual unlocking over the following years. Now, after the first year, the tokens will unlock gradually over four years instead of two, with full unlock expected by the end of July 2028.TFH states that this extension aims to bring stability and confidence to stakeholders and new investors by reducing the immediate token supply in the market. The company emphasizes that there are no further planned lock-up extensions now.TFH subsidiary Worldcoin has extended the reservation period for individuals without a verified World ID and WLD tokens to be redeemed upon verification until July 31, 2025, a one-year extension from the previous date of July 21, 2024.The company says this extension allows users more time to verify their World ID and redeem their reserved WLD tokens, aiming to encourage greater participation in the Worldcoin project.Way short of 1B users by 2023 goal-Worldcoin, established in 2019 by Sam Altman and two other co-founders, set a goal of reaching 1 billion users by 2023. The company offered free cryptocurrency tokens to individuals who consented to have their iris biometrics scanned by its Orb.However, according to Fastcompany, the number of sign-ups falls significantly short of the goal, with only 6 million users. Additionally, the value of the WLD token is currently trading at around $1.90, almost unchanged from its initial trading price.Worldcoin faced geographical limitations as it could not register users in important markets such as China, India, the United Kingdom, and most of Europe. Additionally, the tokens were not accessible to U.S. citizens and those within the United States.Worldcoin encountered regulatory issues, particularly related to concerns about minors signing up. Earlier this year, Portugal imposed a 90-day suspension on Worldcoin’s biometric data collection activities in the country.

Bosnia and Herzegovina digital ID agency refutes claim it overstepped authority-IDDEEA points to EU guidelines as justification for provision of digital identity services-Jul 17, 2024, 10:13 am EDT    | Joel R. McConvey

Another bureaucratic fight has broken out between a national identity agency and its attendant government, this time in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH).The Agency for Identification Documents, Registers, and Data Exchange of Bosnia and Herzegovina (IDDEEA) has issued a statement objecting to allegations from the Ministry of the Interior of Republika Srpska (MUP RS) that it abused its legal authority to assist MUP RS with technical support by offering unauthorized ID services in person – and, in doing so, jeopardized the security of citizens’ personal information.IDDEEA, says MUP RS, “has no authority to receive requests of the citizens in person.” Indeed, the core issue appears to be one of jurisdiction, and whether IDDEEA counts as a legal certification authority.IDDEEA is pursuing the digitization of services through increased issuance of biometric credentials, digital identity documents, wallets and remote electronic signatures. Its BiH digital identity has been available since February. On July 1, it launched its application for the issuance of a qualified remote electronic signature, making remote electronic signing of documents available to citizens for the first time. It also opened registration offices to facilitate registration.IDDEEA says it is operating within its rights as a certification authority registered with the Ministry of Communications and Transport, in line with EU directives and certified according to the eIDAS regulation. It claims MUP RS has made “unclear and imprecise statements” regarding the agency’s scope of work.“If allegations refer to the issuing of qualified electronic certificates for remote signing,” it says, “we must also remind you of the official response and clarification of the competent Ministry of Communications and Transport of Bosnia and Herzegovina.”Because, of course, “everyone knows that the competent supervisory authority for implementation of the Law on the Identity Card of Citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina is the Ministry of Civil Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the Ministry of Transport and Communications of Bosnia and Herzegovina for the Law on Electronic Signatures of Bosnia and Herzegovina.“The IDDEEA is obliged to implement and enforce the applicable legislation until the contrary is foreseen or proven in any of the legal procedures.”BiH is a participant in the European Union’s Digital Europe Programme (DIGITAL), which grants access to a €7.5 billion (US$8.1 billion) fund to advance digital transformation.

Biometrics, electronic devices and identity credentials converging-Jul 13, 2024, 12:32 pm EDT    | Chris Burt

Biometrics in electronic devices and ID documents to support digital identity are a major theme of the week’s top stories on Biometric Update, along with developments in the credentials themselves. Google is putting new fingerprint scanners with Qualcomm and Suprema technology in its flagship smartphone, and Fingerprint Cards has booked a volume order for enterprise security keys, while mobile driver’s licenses take one step forward and one step back in the U.S., the UK grapples with the possibilities of digital ID, and emerging biometric passport standards get a spotlight. Meanwhile, IDScan.net age verification features in a controversial new application.Top biometrics news of the week-Thales Strategic Marketing Director for Digital Identity John Cullen reviews the progress of mobile driver’s licenses in the U.S. and Australia and the benefits they deliver in a guest post for Biometric Update. The privacy advantages for consumers stand out to Cullen, who predicts slow but inevitable adoption of mDLs as a more secure foundation for digital identity.Florida’s Smart ID, mentioned by Cullen, has been discontinued, pending a new contract under different requirements. Authorities say a new version of the mDL will be ready next year.North Carolina has established a legal basis for mDLs fully equivalent to physical ID cards, and a plan to provide a digital option by July, 2025. Meanwhile in Illinois, a proposal to launch a tender for the state’s digital ID has reached the Governor’s desk.Former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair weighed in on the need for digital ID to support effective immigration controls and boost the national economy as soon as the election was over. Unfortunately, a UK press corps primed for sensation conflated the call for with one for mandatory ID cards. OIX’s Nick Mothershaw reiterates the potential for user-controlled digital ID issued by regulated private sector providers.Policy-makers and media around the world continue to struggle to separate the real and imagined risks of digital ID and biometrics. The fallacy that people with their names and facial photos freely available online have something to fear from the storage of encrypted templates is another example recently in the news. The Tony Blair Institute has a lot of thoughts on policies the UK government should take related to AI. That includes big projections for the potential financial gains to the UK from digital ID, in the form of lower benefits fraud, improving tax procedures and efficiently targeted emergency support. One of the first changes made by the new government is expanding the DSIT to lead on digitizing government service delivery.A cross-border digital identity pilot under the EU4Digital program was successfully completed by EU Eastern Partnership countries Armenia, Georgia and Moldova. The pilot tested interoperability for authentication across eIDAS nodes for access to foreign digital public services, and more mutual recognition initiatives are coming.ICAO is changing the standard for biometric passports, and coverage of the second day of EAB’s recent workshop to explain the changes and the ISO standards behind them remained very popular this week.Americans will soon be able to store their biometric passport in digital form in Google Wallet by scanning the NFC chip or a QR code. Support for other countries’ passports will follow, adding to the mobile driver’s licenses from several states, access control credentials and 170 banks that work with Google Wallet.Google is switching to an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor from Qualcomm running Suprema algorithms as the native biometric for its Pixel 9 smartphone. The under-display capability in previous models was an optical sensor, and the new one in the upcoming model is expected to address some reported performance issues.Fingerprint Cards has struck a deal to provide over $1 million in fingerprint sensor modules for security keys for logical access control. The mystery buyer is a FIDO-certified global enterprise biometric hardware provider, which fits with Fingerprint Cards’ strategy to support zero trust access control implementations.Vending machines are being equipped with age verification capabilities to enable sales of age-restricted goods, with bullet vending machines in 2 U.S. states the latest example. American Rounds ammunition kiosks use IDScan.net to ID document scanning and face biometrics checks, but have faced pushback from local residents in at least one of the areas where they have been installed.NIST has published new editions of both the FRTE 1:N and 1:1 reports in July, which present snapshots of improving accuracy among updated algorithms. The reports include first-time submissions from Indian developer Sansap Technologies in the former case and two Taiwanese developers, Taiwan Computer Vision and Telexper International, in the latter. The full text of the AI Act has been published in the Official Journal of the European Union, starting the clock for companies to meet compliance deadlines. The AI Act, officially passed in March, will come into law on August 1st.Please let us know about any interviews, panel discussions or other content we should share with the people in biometrics and the digital identity community, either in the comments below or through social media.

Malta officials deny allegations they issued 18K ID cards to foreigners for bribes-Ex-MP hurls slander at former Identita manager on Facebook, gets sued-Jul 16, 2024, 5:19 pm EDT    | Joel R. McConvey

The former senior manager of Malta’s Identita, Ryan Spagnol, is suing former MP Jason Azzopardi for libel over allegations that Spagnol took bribes from foreigners in exchange for residence permits and identity cards. The Times of Malta reports that Azzopardi made the accusations in a series of posts on Facebook, in which he claims the illegal identity card racket in Malta has chalked up 60 million Euros (US$64.5 million) in bribes since 2015.Spagnol has vehemently denied the allegations and urged the courts to clear his name as soon as possible. But Azzopardi seems to be relishing the challenge as a kind of showdown at the identity OK Corral, responding to the lawsuit (again on Facebook) with a post saying “Bravo. Well done. Welcome… we will meet.” And, perhaps even more threatening: “You don’t know the information I am receiving.”A report from Net News says the ID card racket issued up to 18,000 falsified digital ID cards to immigrants who were willing to pony up between €2,000 and €8,000. Many came from Egypt and Libya, and Azzopardi’s allegation is based on information from an Egyptian who was issued a fake ID card then denied whistleblower status when volunteering to name the people behind the racket. It is worth noting that Spagnol’s lawsuit was launched before the Net News story went public.Identita – which rebranded from the more pedestrian Identity Malta in 2023 to distance itself from allegations of electoral fraud – says the 18,000 illegal transactions never happened. And there may be powerful interests backing their denial; Net News alleges that “in this serious racket there are even people very close to Members of Robert Abela’s Cabinet involved, with the same Cabinet knowing what is happening and knowing the names of the individuals behind this all.” It also says the police are aware of the racket and have not taken action. For now, Identita soldiers on, having recently celebrated its tenth anniversary with the release of its 2023 annual report and the hiring of a new CEO, Steve Agius. The final result of Azzopardi v. Spagnol, meanwhile, is yet to be determined. But with Azzopardi promising to open a “Pandora’s Box,” there is little doubt that the fight will go several more rounds, and is likely to get bloody.

India G20 Task Force report defines course of global DPI development-Jul 16, 2024, 4:32 pm EDT    | Allison Heather

A report that is expected to influence the trajectory of digital public infrastructure (DPI) development around the world and strengthen the foundation for implementation has been released by a team of representatives from Indian institutions. The report of India’s G20 Task Force on Digital Public Infrastructure, released July 15, details the role of DPI in the development of India’s digital economy and how that can be replicated elsewhere to drive economic transformation, financial inclusion and digital government. It its divided into three parts and proposes a model of DPI development that should be globally applicable through a set of agreed standards. The first part looks at the deployment of technological solutions to address development challenges using the DPI approach, the second lays bare India’s DPI strides across all the three major components of the India Stack, while the third presents guidelines and policy recommendations for improving DPI development. The 11-member Task Force was put in place during India’s presidency of the G20 which made the development of DPI a priority. It also pushed for a clear definition and implementation framework for these technological building blocks to help countries meet their Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).The three-part report also highlights the crucial role which partnership between the public and private sectors can play in building DPI for sustainable growth. In comments following the launch of the report, India’s G20 Sherpa and co-chair of the Task Force, Shri Amitabh Kant, said DPI enabled the country to achieve in nine years what would have taken 50 years without it.“India did an incredible pole vault in Digital Public Infrastructure. Today in India, UPI is used at all levels from street vendors to large shopping malls, with the highest percentage of digital transactions globally, accounting for nearly 46 percent share,” said Kant.“All these proved to be building blocks for India to steer through the COVID-19 pandemic, be it transfer $4.5 billion into the bank accounts of 160 million beneficiaries or facilitate distribution of 2.5 million vaccinations in two years with digital vaccine certificates on mobiles. We are far advanced in terms of digitization and I am confident, this report will be the guiding North Star for the world to follow.”In his own remarks, the other co-chair of the Task Force and founding chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), Shri Nandan Nilekani, said for all those seeking rapid socio-economic development, DPI is the way to go as it “has the power to dramatically improve the lives of citizens and transform governance.”“It has happened here in India and it started with the Aadhaar ID system, aimed at providing a digital identity to every Indian. Now, around 1.3 billion Indians possess this digital ID and on average 10 million eKYC per day is being facilitated through Aadhaar,” he notes.“Meanwhile in payment, UPI facilitates 13 billion transactions monthly, serving about 350 million individuals and 50 million merchants and DPI enabled direct transfer has saved government $41 billion across central government schemes. Therefore, it’s no longer a choice or a luxury, DPI is essential to get to where we want. This Report will play a key role in defining the future course of DPI approach and actions around the globe.”A number of countries have expressed interest in the UPI and the report mentions that the National Payments Corporation of India – the body overseeing the UPI – is working to expand the reach of the platform to over 80 countries, with MoUs already concluded with partners in more than 20 of them. The proposals contained in the Task Force report are expected to be followed up during the G20 presidency currently held by Brazil and the one after to be held by South Africa.India’s DPI empowering citizens, inspiring the world-Meanwhile, a clip of a movie produced by The Center for Digital Public Infrastructure takes a look at India’s DPI journey and how it is “empowering citizens and inspiring the world.”The clip presents how owners of bakeries and other retail shops have seen their businesses grow in a short time span thanks to India’s digital payments infrastructure. One retail store owner in Bangalore says unlike in the past where they struggled with issues of making change for his customers, about 70 percent of them now pay for items in his store using their mobile phones.Apart from the digital payments system, employees also reveal how DigiLocker – the third component of the India Stack which ensures verifiable credentials issuance for secure data sharing – is helping cut cost and time in background verification processes for recruitments. As highlighted in the report, India’s digital transformation and innovation journey didn’t happen by chance, but is rather “a product of meticulous planning and deliberate design.”Nilekani, the founding chairman of UIDAI, and a chief architect of the Aadhaar system, Pramod Varma, also share their views about India’s digital transformation journey from the beginning of the Aadhaar in the club. The clip features information about the technology and design approach to the India Stack, challenges faced and how they’ve been dealt with, the future of DPI and global adoption, the importance and impact of DPI, as well as practical advice to countries looking to implement DPI projects.Britain is one the nations that could benefit from following India’s lead on DPI, former Indian Technology Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar told the Tony Blair Institute’s 2024 Future of Britain Conference.Chandrasekhar declined to explicitly recommend that the UK adopt a national digital identity, but states that India’s digital ID is “the core to a digital government architecture which has in many ways transformed the narrative of India.”

Former Classmate Of Failed Assassin Confirms He Was Trump Hater, Says Friend Group Threatened To Shoot Up School-by Kelen McBreen-July 17th 2024, 3:02 pm

In a shocking interview with Fox News Digital, a former classmate of deceased Trump rally shooter Thomas Crooks described the failed assassin as holding anti-Donald Trump political views. The ex-schoolmate, Vincent Taormina, explained Crooks was passionate about politics and didn’t like any of the presidential options in the 2016 race.JUST IN: Former Thomas Crooks classmate says Crooks was a known Trump hater and was a “know it all.”The FBI still doesn’t know what Crooks’ motive could have been.Hispanic classmate Vincent Taormina recalled a political disagreement he had with Crooks after he told him that… pic.twitter.com/LzgnohInnw— Collin Rugg (@CollinRugg) July 17, 2024-Taormina said, “So, I brought up the fact that I’m Hispanic and I’m for Trump and he [Crooks] said, ‘Well, you’re Hispanic so shouldn’t you hate Trump?’ And, I was like, ‘No, he’s a great president.’ And, he called me stupid or insinuated I was stupid.”The shooter’s former classmate went on to describe Crooks as a “know-it-all” when it came to politics, explaining, “He would just say it in a tone that was like I’m better than you in a type of way.”URGENT! Keep Alex Jones in the fight against the NWO! Please pray & contribute at DefendJones.com today!Later, Taormina talked about Crooks’ friend group and claimed one of them, potentially the Trump shooter himself, had threatened to shoot up the school.Regarding reports that the shooter was hazed at school, the classmate said it may have been overexaggerated as he didn’t see any examples that Crooks was “severely bullied.”Taormina also questioned why Crooks’ parents and others in his circle didn’t see any signs of mental issues leading up to the shooting, saying, “He was not a loner. And, both of his parents being counselors, how do you not see that warning sign?”Perhaps adding some credibility to Taormina’s account is the fact that the high school Crooks attended, “Bethel Park High School,” was shut down over threats in both 2016 and 2017.The allegation that Crooks was an anti-Trumper is quite revealing as many Americans have been puzzled at the shooter being a registered Republican.

Secret Service Claims ‘Sloped Roof’ Reason They Couldn’t Protect Trump — Report-Sean Miller | Infowars-July 17th 2024, 8:50 am

U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle told ABC News on Monday that agents in her agency were unable to provide adequate protection of former President Donald Trump during his rally in Butler, Pennsylvania due to a roof not being flat.“That building in particular has a sloped roof, at its highest point. And so, there’s a safety factor that would be considered there that we wouldn’t want to put somebody up on a sloped roof. And so, the decision was made to secure the building, from inside,” Cheatle told ABC News.“Should that roof have been secured?”Director Kimberly Cheatle: “That building has a sloped roof. Harvard alum who filed antisemitism suit against university enthusiastically cheered at RNC-By Jacob Magid-JUL 18,24

MILWAUKEE — Republican National Convention attendees enthusiastically cheer Shabbos Kestenbaum, a Harvard University graduate suing the school for allegedly failing to protect Jewish students from discrimination over the past school year.“After October 7, the world finally saw what I and so many Jewish students across this country experienced almost every day,” he says.“Although I once voted for Bernie Sanders, I now recognize that the far left has not only abandoned the Jewish people, but the American people,” Kestenbaum claims.“Let’s elect a president who recognizes that although Harvard and the Ivy League have long abandoned the United States of America, the Jewish people never will. Because Jewish values are American values, and American values are Jewish values.”Prior to Kestenbaum’s speech, the convention honored a group of fraternity brothers from the University of North Carolina who went viral for guarding an American flag during a hostile pro-Palestinian protest in April.

COVID diagnosis adds to deepening US presidential election drama ahead of Netanyahu’s visit-JUL 18,24

The White House’s announcement that US President Biden will be going to Delaware to self-isolate after testing positive for COVID introduces a potential curveball into Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to Washington next week. While it remains unclear how the development could impact Monday’s scheduled meeting at the White House, Biden’s doctor says he has mild symptoms and received an initial dose of Paxlovid, which typically has a five-day regimen, but does not specify a timetable for his expected recovery.Netanyahu’s trip was already expected to face potential complications from the recent drama of the US presidential election, with Biden coming under increasing pressure from fellow Democrats to end his reelection bid after his debate flop against Donald Trump, who over the weekend survived an assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania.

Lapid: Announce a hostage deal in DC or cancel your trip-Echoing Wellington, PM implies he views Oct. 7 probe as bureaucratic nuisance amid war-At Knesset, PM compares himself to Duke of Wellington during Napoleonic wars, who mocked the need to inspect the condition of a battalion’s ‘jam jars’ during fighting-By ToI Staff and Sam Sokol-Today, 12:02 am-JUL 18,24

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected calls to swiftly establish a state commission of inquiry into the October 7 disaster during a debate on the matter in the Knesset on Wednesday.Speaking at a so-called 40-signature debate — a session the opposition can call once a month with the signatures of 40 MKs and which the prime minister is legally obliged to attend — Netanyahu compared current demands for an investigation of the October 7 massacre to bureaucratic inspections of the British military during the Napoleonic wars over 200 years ago.The focus of the debate was the need to thoroughly investigate the failings that enabled the disaster of October 7.Netanyahu has resisted forming a state commission of inquiry into the failings leading up to October 7 or the handling of the war. He has said investigations must wait until after the fighting ends and has repeatedly avoided committing to forming a state commission, which is the inquiry body that enjoys the broadest powers under Israeli Law. With the war now in its 10th month, pressure has been growing to begin investigating events.“Let me tell you something about an investigative committee,” Netanyahu said as he addressed lawmakers in the plenum. “I have a letter written by the [British officer and statesman] Duke of Wellington to the government in London. They sent a commission of inquiry to him. He was in Spain on his way to Portugal, fighting Napoleon, on the way to Waterloo [the decisive battle in 1815]. The inquiry committee was sent and asked him to give a precise account of the number of horse saddles he was using, the number of tent sheets, the number of tent poles.“Wellington responded: ‘I very much appreciate this inquiry, and I would like to report on missing pounds sterling in one battalion… and there’s also a question of jam jars in another battalion, but please decide between two assignments: Do you want me to deal with answering your army of bureaucrats or do you want me to defeat Napoleon?'”The premier then banged on the lectern and declared: “I now want to beat Hamas! And there will be time later to check all the jam jars as well as other things.”The Knesset plenum ultimately voted 53-51 against a bill brought forth by Yesh Atid MK Meir Cohen that would have established a state committee of inquiry.During his speech, Netanyahu also slammed the opposition, saying, “As the pressure on Hamas grows, so does your campaign of trolling. As the campaign in the squares and streets proves unsuccessful, you lie more and more.”During the debate, Opposition Leader Yair Lapid demanded Netanyahu either announce his acceptance of a hostage deal during his July 24 speech to the US Congress, or cancel his upcoming trip to Washington.“Mr. Prime Minister, are you going to announce next week on the rostrum in Congress that you accept the hostage deal?” Lapid asked. “If that’s what you will say, go in peace with our blessings. It is the right and moral thing to do. If that’s not your plan, don’t go to Washington.”Lapid said there were people within Netanyahu’s own bureau “who think and say that you should announce in a speech to Congress that you accept the hostage deal. Not in twisty wording, not with conditions that would screw it up again,” Lapid continued, calling on Netanyahu to otherwise not “give a speech in the air-conditioning of Washington while the hostages are dying of suffocation in the tunnels of Gaza.”Lapid also reiterated his prior criticism of Netanyahu for spending two hours during Sunday’s weekly cabinet meeting discussing incitement against him, rather than focusing on the fate of those suffering because of the war, saying the premier had “not said a word about the hostages.”“You’ve said that in the Middle East, only the strong are valued. If this is true, why did Hamas invade the territory of the State of Israel on your watch [and] kill 1,200 citizens? Did it not occur to them that there was someone strong before them that they should be afraid of? It’s because they knew something about you,” Lapid accused.Labor MK Naama Lazimi also slammed Netanyahu, blaming him for strengthening Hamas ahead of October 7 and accusing him of playing political games while Israelis suffer.“The reservists and their wives, the orphans of the IDF, the farmers — all these will wait. The main thing is that the [coalition] partners loot as quickly as possible before the burning tower of cards finally collapses,” Lazimi said, apparently referring to the government’s allocation of funds to priorities of Netanyahu’s ultra-Orthodox and far-right coalition partners.“You strengthened those who slaughtered us. You handed [Hamas] suitcases of dollars in cash, you saw these murderers as an asset. You avoided killing the heads of Hamas at least six times. Until now you have not explained to the public why. You are afraid to meet the public because you know that lives have been ruined because of your abandonment,” she said, repeating several unverified claims against Netanyahu — charging him with preferring “political survival over saving lives.”“The one who prevents the greatest mitzvah of ransoming captives is the one who has forgotten what it is to be a Jew and a human being,” Lazimi added, paraphrasing a hot mic comment made over 20 years ago by Netanyahu that the Left “has forgotten what it is to be a Jew.”Later in the day Netanyahu publicly clashed on social media with opposition MK Benny Gantz after the latter, a former member of the war cabinet that oversaw the initial stages of the war alongside Netanyahu, accused the prime minister of being repeatedly hesitant in decision-making during the war and saying those failings would come to light in a future inquiry.Gantz brought his National Unity party into the emergency government after October 7 and was one of three members of the war cabinet, along with Netanyahu and Gallant. But Gantz pulled out of the government in June while accusing Netanyahu of botching the war effort. In a post to social media platform X, Gantz addressed Netanyahu, writing: “You were afraid” to launch the Gaza offensive, “delayed entering Khan Younis,” and “hesitated to enter Rafah,” referring to two cities that are key Hamas strongholds in Gaza. Those failings, Gantz asserted “will be revealed when the protocols and testimonies are heard” by a state commission of inquiry. That forum will ask “Why were you afraid, delayed, and hesitated? And what are the prices we paid and are still paying for it?” Gantz predicted.Netanyahu shot back at Gantz posting to his own X account that it was “more fake news from Benny Gantz.”Netanyahu said he had taken a photo of Gantz’s post and “I will recall his hallucinatory tweet when the protocols are revealed and the public will find out who looked for excuses ‘to stop the fighting for a year or two’ and who it was who really pushed ahead to continue the war until victory.”Netanyahu was apparently referring to an interview that Gantz gave to Channel 12 after leaving the government in which he urged a hostage deal even if it meant halting the campaign against Hamas for a year or two.Gantz responded to Netanyahu, writing “I await the establishment of a state commission of inquiry” though he added: “What is done is done. But the hostages must be brought back. If you do the right thing you will have full backing. That is what is important now.”

Bennett rebukes former partner Abbas after he claims ‘50,000 civilians murdered in Gaza’‘The IDF is eliminating vile terrorists,’ says former PM after Ra’am party leader makes claim at Knesset; MK Ayman Odeh booted from plenum for calling Netanyahu a ‘terrorist’ By Sam Sokol-17 July 2024, 7:36 pm

The leader of the Arab Islamist Ra’am party, MK Mansour Abbas, courted controversy Wednesday when he claimed from the Knesset rostrum that “50,000 civilians have been murdered in Gaza.”Another leading Arab MK was removed from the plenum during the session on the state of the war in Gaza for calling Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a “terrorist.”Abbas’s comments on the Gaza war’s death toll were particularly striking as he is seen as a moderate among Arab lawmakers, and he made history in 2021, when he brought his party into the coalition, the first Arab list to do so in decades.Abbas made the comment while responding to coalition lawmakers who were heckling him during a speech.Abbas strongly condemned Hamas’s October 7 attacks, and in November asked a party member to resign after she expressed doubts regarding Hamas atrocities. At the same time, he has for months urged a ceasefire between Israel and the terror group. Many in the Israeli government believe a permanent ceasefire is not possible before Hamas is destroyed, and that one should only be considered temporarily as part of a deal to release hostages.Abbas was speaking against the damage caused by ongoing war at the plenum during a so-called 40 signatures debate — one the opposition can call with 40 signatures of MKs once a month and which the prime minister is legally obliged to attend. At one point, as Abbas said Israel must do everything to bring back hostages, Likud MK Hanoch Milwidsky shouted at him: “You want to stop the war!”A visibly incensed Abbas retorted: “Of course I want to stop the war! Fifty thousand civilians have been murdered in the Gaza Strip!”Hamas’s own numbers put the total death toll in Gaza at some 39,000, without distinguishing between combatants and civilians. That figure has come under question, with at least 10,000 deaths apparently based on murky Hamas “media sources” rather than bodies brought to hospitals.Of the total deaths, Israel assesses that at least 15,000 are terror operatives killed in combat.Abbas’s statement led to angry shouting by several other MKs and prompted Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana to order him off the rostrum.Firebrand Likud MK Tally Gotliv repeatedly yelled at Abbas following his comments, requiring Ohana to order her to return to her seat.“You call the soldiers murderers and you will not be here!” she cried.Responding to Abbas’s comments, his erstwhile political ally, former prime minister Naftali Bennett, tweeted a rebuke.“Mansour, I’ll correct you,” he wrote. “Fifty thousand people were not ‘murdered’ in Gaza. The IDF is eliminating vile terrorists who murdered, kidnapped and raped civilians on October 7. Sometimes these cowardly terrorists hide behind civilians, thereby causing their deaths. The IDF is a moral army.”Bennett, a nationalist religious prime minister, joined forces with left-wing, centrist, and other right-wing politicians in 2021 to form a first-of-its-kind unity coalition that included parties with conflicting worldviews, including Ra’am.Abbas was the first Arab Israeli party leader in half a century to sign a deal to sit in a coalition government, a move that subjected Bennett to harsh criticism on the right at the time.In response to Abbas and Bennett, Environment Minister Idit Silman — who served as coalition whip under Bennett before defecting to Likud — declared that “we made a grave mistake by allowing the Muslim Brotherhood and parties that encourage terrorism to have their hands on the steering wheel of the country.“Mansour’s heart is with the people of Gaza, while our hearts go out to the hostages and our soldiers,” she tweeted. The Islamist Abbas, a complex figure, previously courted controversy among his own base by stating that Israel will always be a Jewish state. Following October 7, Abbas condemned Hamas and called for Palestinian terror groups to demilitarize and work with the Palestinian Authority in order to establish a Palestinian state through non-violent means. This April, the Corporations Authority announced that two non-profits associated with the southern branch of Israel’s Islamic Movement and Abbas’ Ra’am party were set to be dissolved over alleged links to terror financing.Abbas was not implicated and his party blamed the Netanyahu government for funding Hamas and accused it of seeking to divert attention from its own mistakes.Further drama occurred at the same session when MK Ayman Odeh, head of the predominantly Arab Hadash-Ta’al party, was ordered out of the plenum for shouting at Netanyahu.During Netanyahu’s speech, in which he hit back at critics of his management of the war in Gaza and claimed that Israel is “on the way to absolute victory” over Gaza terrorists, Odeh cried out “The terrorist is you,” leading to his removal.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

Analysis-PA losing grip on West Bank amid Israeli raids, post-Oct. 7 cash freeze-Analysts say squeezing Ramallah likely to boost rivals Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad, as workers get partial salaries and authorities can’t pay for roads, sewage, medicine-By Reuters and ToI Staff 17 July 2024, 7:22 pm

Roads torn up months ago by army bulldozers in the Jenin refugee camp amid operations against terror groups remain unpassable because the Palestinian Authority can’t afford to fix them. Government employees are being paid a fraction of their salaries, and health services are collapsing. These are all signs of a deep financial crisis that has crippled the administration led by President Mahmoud Abbas in the Israeli-controlled West Bank, prompting questions over its future even as the United States and other countries are pressing for a “revitalized” PA to run the Gaza Strip when fighting there ends. The PA’s finances have been in disarray for years as donor states have cut back funding that once covered nearly a third of its $6 billion annual budget, demanding reforms to tackle corruption and waste. But Palestinian officials say they worsened sharply since October 7, 2023, when thousands of Hamas-led terrorists stormed southern Isreal, killing nearly 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages, and sparking the war in Gaza.Amid the war, Israel has withheld from the PA funds earmarked for Gaza from tax revenue Jerusalem collects on behalf of the PA under the 1993 Oslo Accords.Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich halted the transfer in light of what he said was the PA’s support for Hamas’s October 7 terror onslaught and its actions against Israel on the international stage. The strains are particularly evident in Jenin, a volatile city in the northern West Bank where Israel has long targeted terror operatives and has stepped up operations since October.Nidal Obeidi, the city’s mayor, said Israeli raids since October have inflicted more damage than in the past on essential infrastructure.“The water and sewage pipes are hit. Power transformers are shot at, and even water storage tanks on roofs,” Obeidi told Reuters. He estimated the repairs would cost $15 million in the refugee camp alone. But with the PA “under siege,” he said, resources are scarce.Roads have been torn up during such raids by engineering forces to neutralize bombs planted by terror operatives against Israeli soldiers.Palestinian officials say the PA is facing one of its gravest crises since it was created under the Oslo Accords 30 years ago.At the time, Palestinians saw the PA as a steppingstone toward their goal of an independent state in the West Bank and Gaza with East Jerusalem as its capital. But as that goal has remained elusive, the salaries and services provided by the PA have helped keep Abbas and his Fatah faction politically relevant in the face of expanding Israeli settlements in the West Bank and challenges posed by armed rivals such as Hamas, which seized Gaza in 2007.Ghassan Khatib, a lecturer at Birzeit University in the West Bank who once served as a Palestinian minister, said Israeli policies risked further marginalizing the PA “and at a certain point in time might cause its collapse.”“They have the effect of reducing the political weight of factions that support a peaceful settlement with Israel — namely Fatah — in favor of the opposition groups, mainly Hamas,” he said. The office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the PA did not comment on Khatib’s remarks. However, Hussein al-Sheikh, a senior Palestinian official, told Al Arabiya TV in June that the shortfall in funding meant the PA could not “do its duties towards the Palestinian people,” which could lead to the “collapse of the Palestinian Authority.Warning of another intifada-The West Bank and East Jerusalem are home to over three million Palestinians, and, according to Israeli authorities, some 700,000 Israeli settlers. Israeli security forces control the West Bank, although the PA exercises limited governance of areas where most of the Palestinian population lives.Under a longstanding arrangement between the sides, Israel collects taxes on goods that pass through Israel into the West Bank and makes monthly transfers to authorities in Ramallah.Following the October 7 attacks, Smotrich began withholding a portion of those revenues equal to the amount transferred by the PA to Gaza, where the Abbas-led administration has continued financing services, salaries and pensions since Hamas took over. Smotrich argued the funds would end up in Hamas’s hands. The finance minister has also accused the PA of failing to condemn the October 7 attacks. Abbas has generally condemned violence against civilians and criticized Hamas’s raid as giving Israel an excuse to attack Gaza, but the PA never issued a full-throated condemnation of the atrocities committed by Hamas. The amount withheld — approximately NIS 300 million ($80 million) a month — added to previous deductions imposed by Israel equivalent to amounts paid by the PA to the families of terrorists and those jailed or killed by Israeli authorities, which Israel argues serves as direct encouragement of terrorism. In May, Smotrich suspended transfers altogether, accusing the PA of working against Israel after the International Criminal Court prosecutor sought arrest warrants against its prime minister and defense minister, and three European countries recognized a Palestinian state.“The Palestinian Authority joined Hamas in trying to harm Israel, inside Israel and around the world, and we will fight it,” Smotrich said at a June 27 cabinet meeting.Smotrich, who also controls Israeli civilian affairs in the West Bank under the coalition agreements, released some funds in a quid pro quo deal that saw the government legalize five West Bank outposts. Israel transferred NIS 435 million ($116 million) to the PA in early July, but Palestinian officials say Israel is still holding NIS 6 billion ($1.6 billion) of its funds.“What was transferred was not enough to pay 60% of the salaries, and therefore the financial crisis is ongoing,” Mohammad Abu al-Rub, a PA spokesperson, told Reuters. “Israel deducts around two-thirds of the revenue, and this puts all the government plans on hold and increases public debt.”The Finance Ministry said it is prohibited by law and a cabinet decision from transferring funds that would be sent to Gaza and “flow into terrorism.” It said the amount withheld was “not even close” to NIS 6 billion, adding in a statement to Reuters: “If the Palestinian Authority does not transfer funds to finance terrorism, there will be no harm” to its economy. The US says the funds belong to the PA and has urged Israel to release them, while also pressing the PA to implement reforms to prepare it to administer Gaza after the war — an idea Netanyahu has repeatedly rejected.“The viability of the Palestinian Authority is essential to stability in the West Bank, which in turn is essential to Israel’s own security interests,” Vedant Patel, a US State Department spokesperson, said at a July 2 news conference. The IDF has warned the government that cutting off funds to the PA could push the West Bank into another “intifada” — the name used for two violent Palestinian uprisings between 1987 and 2005 — according to a June report by public broadcaster Kan that was confirmed to Reuters by an Israeli official. The military referred Reuters at the time to the Shin Bet internal security service, which declined to comment.Netanyahu’s office did not answer questions for this article.‘Nobody is helping’The financial pressure on the PA comes as economic and security conditions in the West Bank have deteriorated sharply, further eroding support for Abbas’s administration, which last held parliamentary elections 18 years ago and which many Palestinians view as wholly corrupt.More than 60% of Palestinians now support the PA’s dissolution, according to an opinion poll published by the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research in June, which also found support for armed struggle had risen. The PA pays salaries or pensions to 150,000 people in Palestinian territories. The last time it paid them in full was in 2022. In March and April, it says, PA employees received 50% of their salaries. In May, they got 60%.Adding to the economic hardship in the West Bank, Israel has since October 7 denied entry to some 200,000 Palestinians who used to commute daily to work in Israel, citing concerns of further attacks.Kathem Harb, a 53-year-old father of four who works in the PA’s national economy ministry, said he could only afford basics like rice, flour and cooking gas.“We live on the bare minimum,” he said, adding there was no money sometimes for water and electricity bills.Cuts to PA salaries mean staff at government clinics only show up to work a couple of days each week, according to health worker unions. Around 45% of essential medications are out of stock, the World Health Organization said last month.Hayat Hamdan, a woman in her fifties, had traveled 10 kilometers (six miles) from the town of Arraba to a government clinic in Jenin in hopes of finding subsidized medication for her wheelchair-bound husband. But inside, many of the pharmacy shelves were empty.“We have health insurance, but it is of no use,” Hamdan said. “Since the start of the Gaza war until today, we are buying most medicines at our own expense.”Meanwhile, raids by groups of extremist Israeli settlers on Palestinian villages have mushroomed, while attacks by Palestinians in the West Bank and East Jerusalem have killed more than a dozen Israelis.Since October 7, more than 560 West Bank Palestinians have been killed, according to the PA health ministry. The IDF says the vast majority of them were killed during clashes with gunmen amid raids or were terrorists carrying out attacks.During the same period, 22 Israelis, including security personnel, have been killed in terror attacks in Israel and the West Bank. Another five members of the security forces were killed in clashes with terror operatives in the West Bank.In the Jenin refugee camp — where some 14,000 people live packed into an area of less than half a square kilometer — young men carrying assault rifles patrol streets in open defiance of the PA, underlining the sway terror groups such as Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad still have despite Israeli raids.Bullet marks on the facade of the nearby PA headquarters offer a reminder of past clashes between PA security forces and armed assailants.A man in his 20s, who asked to be identified only as Mohammed for safety reasons, said conditions in the camp were bad before October 7 due to the Israeli raids and had gotten a lot worse since.“There are no roads; the infrastructure is destroyed; homes are destroyed; shops are destroyed,” he said, expressing frustration with the PA for cracking down on its enemies while doing little for Palestinian civilians.“There is no work; the authority isn’t paying salaries; the prices are going up. Nobody is helping the people of the camp.”

Israel to set up port facility to replace US pier, build field hospital for Gaza kids-Defense minister announces plans without giving timeline; Gazan authorities say wastewater pumping stations have stopped working because of fuel shortages in Deir al-Balah-By Agencies and ToI Staff 17 July 2024, 5:28 pm

Israel will soon replace the United States military’s offshore pier for delivering aid to the Gaza Strip with a dedicated facility in a southern Israeli port, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said on Tuesday, days after the Biden administration announced that the floating platform would soon be shut down.Gallant said that “Pier 28” would be established in Israel’s Ashdod port to help deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza, without specifying a timeline.Aid coming in through that pier will still need to go in through Israeli land crossings. The American temporary pier, located off Gaza’s coast, has been beset by ongoing weather and security problems since it was installed in May. The US has said it is winding down the project, although officials maintain it has been a success in delivering badly needed food aid to the territory.Gallant announced the decision after a meeting with US Gen. Erik Kurilla, the head of Central Command.“The minister emphasized the defense establishment’s commitment to working with international partners to ensure the entry of critical humanitarian aid to Gaza,” his office said. The United Nations has long said maritime deliveries were no substitute for land access. It said land routes needed to remain the focus of aid operations in the enclave, where a global hunger monitor last month said there is a high risk of famine, although it concluded that similar warnings issued earlier in the war had proven to be incorrect.Gallant’s office also said he had ordered the establishment of a field hospital in Israel to treat Palestinian children who are unable to leave Gaza for medical care abroad. It was not immediately clear which body would be running the hospital, and whether it would be Israeli or otherwise. It said the decision was made because of the extended closure of Gaza’s Rafah crossing into Egypt. The crossing has been closed since Israeli forces captured it in early May. Egypt has refused to reopen the crossing while the Gazan side remains under Israeli control.“This is a significant short-term solution that will address immediate humanitarian needs until a permanent mechanism is established to evacuate and treat ill children,” Gallant’s office said, again without providing a timeline.Meanwhile, Hamas-run local authorities in one of Gaza’s main cities said on Wednesday that wastewater pumping stations had stopped working because fuel had run out, expressing fears that disease could rapidly spread.Tens of thousands of people displaced by the Israel-Hamas war have sought shelter in Deir al-Balah, and city authorities said more than 700,000 people could be at risk from a “health and environmental crisis.” The war sparked by the devastating October 7 Hamas assault on Israel.“Deir al-Balah municipality announces the halt of water waste pumping stations because stocks of fuel necessary for their functioning are exhausted,” said a city statement. It predicted that “roads will be flooded by wastewater” and “diseases will spread.”The fuel-powered waste plants treat water that is then put into the Mediterranean.“Nineteen pits and two large reservoirs are unusable in Deir al-Balah,” Ismail Sarsour, an official with the city’s emergency committee, said ahead of the release of the statement, adding that the stations handle wastewater for more than 140 points of shelter where tens of thousands of people have taken refuge. The Palestinian Authority’s water department, the PWA, which is based in Ramallah in the West Bank, said recently it had arranged for tens of thousands of liters of fuel to enter Gaza.Israel said this month that, with help from the UN children’s agency UNICEF, it had connected one desalination plant in southern Gaza to its electricity network. It was unclear if the plant had started working. The Palestinian Authority also said that it expected electricity supplies to start again in central Gaza in the “coming days” to power public infrastructure. Israeli authorities have not confirmed the move.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

Op-ed: Day 285 of the war-Hamas is weakened, but there’s no room for complacency-Gaza has not miraculously receded into the geographical distance, and the IDF is still uncovering tunnels * Netanyahu’s incredible ignorance * Don’t fire Gallant (again) * The truth about Haredi draft-dodging-By David Horovitz-17 July 2024, 5:03 pm

This Editor’s Note was sent out earlier Wednesday in ToI’s weekly update email to members of the Times of Israel Community. To receive these Editor’s Notes as they’re released, join the ToI Community here.Senior officers in the IDF are sounding increasingly upbeat about the progress of the war — and the process of dismantling Hamas’s military capabilities. The army doesn’t claim to have found, much less destroyed, all of Hamas’s tunnels. In the Rafah area, for instance, it envisages long work ahead to disable the underground infrastructure to the point where it could not be resurrected — partly because the routes through which Hamas smuggled in arms from Egypt extend deep into the densely populated city, where blowing up sections of tunnels is fraught with complexity. But gradually and inexorably, the tunnel threat is being reduced, especially as the IDF advances its kilometer-wide buffer zone inside Gaza all along the border with Israel. It also doesn’t claim to have destroyed the Gaza terror groups’ entire rocket arsenals. Indeed, officials say Hamas retains the capacity not only to target communities close to the border but also to fire deep into central Israel — to the Jerusalem and Tel Aviv areas. But it believes Hamas is no longer easily able to smuggle in weaponry or components, and that its rocket-making factories are broadly now demolished. And it doesn’t claim to have killed or neutralized the entire Hamas leadership — Yahya Sinwar is still scuttling below the surface — or the entire 30,000-strong Hamas army. Something in the order of half of those gunmen are dead, military officials believe. But most of the rest of them are no longer fighting; most of them are no longer in the tunnels; many if not most of them are now hiding out in designated humanitarian areas.Despite such progress, however, 120 hostages remain held in Gaza — 116 of them since October 7. The security agencies work constantly to gather the intelligence that could facilitate further rescue operations, but such opportunities are few and far between.Openly contradicting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s assertion on Saturday night that the IDF had failed for months to apply sufficient military pressure on Hamas to force it into a hostage deal, IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi said the next day that his troops have imposed “all the pressure required to create the best conditions for such an agreement, and this is how we have acted since the end of the previous agreement” in November.Along with the other security leaders, and in common with Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, Halevi made clear his belief that a deal is the urgently necessary route for securing the freedom of as many hostages as possible as soon as possible. As for formally ending the war as part of any such agreement, military officials privately profess relative comfort with that prospect — regarding Hamas to now be sufficiently degraded as to have essentially lost its organized military capabilities, and noting that Israel would simply resume “military operations” against Hamas targets as and when needed after a deal is carried out, without referring to such operations as anything akin to war.Amid this kind of optimism, it is worth sounding a very loud warning against complacency. We all know only too well where assessments of Hamas’s intentions and abilities left Israel on October 7. Many of its leaders and gunmen may be dead, and its current capacities massively reduced, but its ideology, goals and core purpose are exactly what they were before October 7 — the destruction of Israel and the killing of Jews.Military sources assert that there is a very low possibility of Hamas infiltration, but the terror government’s Gaza home territory has not magically receded into the geographical distance: As I saw last Monday, Shejaiyah, for instance, where eight tunnels, six of them approaching the border, have been uncovered in just the past few weeks, remains the same short dusty walk from Nahal Oz and Kfar Aza, with Sa’ad, Alumim and Be’eri just down the road. And yet, when a group of us from The Times of Israel last Wednesday visited Kfar Aza and Be’eri, and heard the horror stories of Hamas’s October 7 slaughter and abduction from survivors, we were also told that there are still no cameras at the fence that separates those two kibbutzim from Gaza.We heard, including from one member of the civil defense squads that fought Hamas that day against impossible odds — there were precisely 26 armed Israelis in Beeri for hours on October 7, facing over 300 Hamas terrorists — that those heroic security teams had been ordered much reduced in the three years before October 7, and been outrageously required to keep their scandalously few weapons and limited ammunition not with them in their homes but in the kibbutz armory, where terrorists were waiting for some of them on that terrible day.Scandalously, we were also told, nine months after the catastrophic invasion that they so valiantly tried to resist, these civil defense squads have yet to be properly reconstituted, funded and armed. The admirable irritant-Israeli security officials are increasingly confident that Sinwar’s prime co-conspirator Muhammad Deif was indeed killed in Saturday morning’s attack on a building owned by the family of the Hamas Khan Younis battalion chief Rafa’a Salameh, who was definitely killed in the strike. In unsurprising contradiction to the Hamas claims, widely indulged in international reports, that 90 people were killed, many of them civilians, the military, which has shown reporters video footage of the attack, believes the death toll was significantly lower, that there were dozens of Hamas gunmen in that very specific area, and that it is highly unlikely there were many civilian fatalities. The speed and accuracy needed for the strike — and the imperative to calculate the risks of failure and decide whether to proceed — required the oversight of highly experienced professionals, in the security and political leadership. That should hardly need saying. But it does need saying when Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is being publicly urged by members of his coalition to, again, fire Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for, basically, daring to express responsible opinions regarding core issues such as the possible ceasefire-hostage deal, the need for a state commission of inquiry into October 7, and the conscription of Haredim.Gallant is a considerable irritant to the increasingly megalomaniacal Netanyahu,  sometimes taking positions opposed to the prime minister’s and anathema to the non-Zionist ultra-Orthodox and far-right coalition parties on whose support Netanyahu depends. Which makes the defense minister’s presence at the prime minister’s side — especially since the departure of Benny Gantz from the emergency coalition — all the more important.Incidentally, telling the bereaved families of surveillance soldiers, as Netanyahu did on Tuesday, that you had no idea their daughters had been desperately warning everyone they knew ahead of October 7 that Hamas was about to attack, that you had no idea the female soldiers did not have weapons, and that you had no idea many of the bereaved families have not had so much as a condolence visit by a government minister or MK, is not particularly credible — since all these issues have been widely discussed in the months since the catastrophe.Declaring such ostensible ignorance is also not particularly smart for a prime minister who is refusing to acknowledge ultimate personal responsibility for October 7 — as the veteran leader and policymaker under whose watch it was allowed to happen — and who is refusing to commit to a manifestly essential state commission of inquiry into the worst policy and security failure in the modern history of Israel. And don’t conscript the non-yeshiva students either?! The IDF is set to start sending out initial orders to draft-dodging ultra-Orthodox men on Sunday. It aims to call in 3,000 of them in the coming year, and to gradually raise that number over the next decade until the untenable inequality surrounding national service is resolved. We will likely see roadblocking and other demonstrations by Haredi extremists aimed at resisting what ought to be the obvious application of the rule of law. What we have already seen and heard is intransigence from many ultra-Orthodox “spiritual leaders” who have quite lost sight of authentic Judaism and its values and principles, and who are openly declaring that even young men who are not yeshiva students must not report for service. This thoroughly un-Jewish refusal to share the responsibilities of citizenship, it has now become clear, is not solely or perhaps not even mainly about defending the aberration of mass full-time, taxpayer-subsidized adult Torah study, but about desperately trying to maintain an iron grip on the community and prevent its members’ social integration, healthy education, and greater fulfillment.Israel should never have had to reach the stage where its authorities are moving to compel part of the population to play its part in the defense of the nation. A sensitive, negotiated path ahead was and remains the far better course. It’s tragic that the intransigence of those who speak for the ultra-Orthodox community has prevented Israel, battling rapacious enemies without, from solving a crisis that is tearing at it from within.

Armenia hosts joint drills with US forces.by AFP Staff Writers.

Yerevan (AFP) July 15, 2024-Armenia hosted joint military drills with US troops on Monday, its defence ministry said, the latest sign of Yerevan's rapprochement with the West amid a deepening rift with Russia. The announcement highlights the shifting geopolitical situation in the Caucasus, where Moscow's historical ally Armenia is seeking to forge closer ties with the West and traditionally pro-Western Georgia faces accusations of drifting towards Russia. The joint drills with servicemen from the US Army Europe and Africa and the Kansas National Guard began in Armenia on Tuesday and will last until July 24, Yerevan's defence ministry said. The exercises, dubbed Eagle Partner 2024, "will focus on stabilization tasks between conflicting parties during a peacekeeping mission", it said earlier."The purpose of the exercise is to enhance the interoperability of units participating in international peacekeeping missions, exchange best practices in control and tactical communication, and improve the readiness of the Armenian unit."Home to a permanent Russian military base, Armenia has effectively frozen its participation in the Moscow-led security alliance, the Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO).Armenia's ties with Moscow soured after Russian peacekeepers failed last year to prevent Azerbaijani forces from recapturing the then-disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region, which had been controlled for three decades by Armenian separatists. The mountainous enclave's entire Armenian population -- more than 100,000 people -- fled for Armenia in the aftermath and many in Armenia fear Azerbaijani aggression despite both country's leaders saying a definitive peace deal is within reach.Armenia had historically sought protection from Russia but following the Azerbaijani victory it has turned increasingly to the United States and European Union. The drills in Armenia came shortly after the US Department of Defence said it would "indefinitely postpone" annual joint exercises in Yerevan's neighbour Georgia. The move followed the US Department of State's decision to conduct a "comprehensive review of the United States-Georgia bilateral relationship" over Tbilisi's perceived democratic backsliding and anti-Western rhetoric.

Gaza city says water treatment stops, 700,000 face health 'crisis'-by AFP Staff Writers.

Gaza Strip, Palestinian Territories (AFP) July 16, 2024-Wastewater pumping stations in one of Gaza's main cities stopped working on Tuesday because fuel had run out, the local authority said, expressing fears that disease could rapidly spread.Tens of thousands of people displaced by the Israel-Hamas war have sought shelter in Deir al-Balah, and city authorities said more than 700,000 people could be at risk from a "health and environmental crisis"."Deir al-Balah municipality announces the halt of water waste pumping stations because stocks of fuel necessary for their functioning are exhausted," said a city statement. It predicted that "roads will be flooded by waste water" and "diseases will spread".Gaza has had no electricity supplies since the war was unleashed by the October 7 Hamas attacks on Israel. The fuel-powered waste plants treat water that is then put into the Mediterranean."Nineteen pits and two large reservoirs are unusable in Deir al-Balah," Ismail Sarsour, an official with the city's emergency committee, said ahead of the release of the statement. He said the stations handle wastewater for more than 140 points of shelter where tens of thousands of people have taken refuge. The Palestinian Authority's water department, the PWA, which is based in Ramallah in the occupied West Bank, said recently it had arranged for tens of thousands of litres of fuel to enter Gaza. But Palestinian experts said the water crisis is so deep that the fuel alone would not help. Sarsour and the experts said there was also a critical shortage of spare parts to repair damaged infrastructure.Israel said this month that, with help from the UN children's agency UNICEF, it has connected one desalination plant in southern Gaza to its electricity network. It is unclear if the plant has started working. The Palestinian Authority also said Tuesday that it expected electricity supplies to start again in central Gaza in "coming days" to power public infrastructure. Israeli authorities have not confirmed the move.Israel's military offensive since October 7 has killed at least 38,713 people, mostly civilians, according to figures from Hamas-run Gaza's health ministry. The war began with Hamas's unprecedented attack on Israel which resulted in the deaths of 1,195 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on Israeli figures.

Greece fears water shortages after warmest winter ever-By Hlne COLLIOPOULOU.

Athens (AFP) July 15, 2024-After Greece's warmest winter and earliest heatwave on record, authorities are sounding the alarm over the risk of dire water shortages in the heat of the Mediterranean summer."Would you like some water? Turn off the tap!" one public service announcement in Athens implores; another daily spot urges the capital's residents to not fill their bath all the way to the top.Already, there are signs that habits may need to change. At the beginning of July, the Mornos reservoir around 200 kilometres (125 miles) west of Athens, the main water source for the Attica region surrounding the capital, levels were down 30 percent from the same period last year. And overall reserves for Attica were down by nearly a quarter over the same period, according to the water utility company EYDAP.Home to more than a third of Greece's population, the region of 3.7 million inhabitants was recently placed on "yellow alert" by EYDAP, which urged people to reduce consumption to keep reserves at a sustainable level.- Overtourism, poor management -Across Greece's islands, which tend to rely on wells and desalination plants to meet water needs, the problem is even more acute.Added pressure comes from the millions of tourists who flock to the country's beaches each summer, swelling the local populations. On some islands suffering from overtourism, the demand for water in summer "is sometimes 100 times greater than in winter", Nikitas Mylopoulos, a professor of water resource management at the University of Thessaly, told AFP.Mylopoulos said the problem of mass tourism was being compounded by poor water management. At the end of June, a month-long state of emergency was declared for the Dodecanese island of Leros. The island's council noted malfunctions at the desalination plant, alleging "poor maintenance in the past".Other islands threatened by water scarcity include Sifnos in the Cyclades, Chios in the north Aegean and Lefkada and Corfu in the Ionian Sea.Sifnos's mayor, Maria Nadali, has criticised "the over-consumption of water for swimming pools and watering large gardens".On Lefkada, Michalis Makropoulos, a local resident and author, denounced a "deplorable" situation where "the water was cut off at the end of June for four consecutive days".In a local newspaper article, he blamed the problem on "years of mismanagement by the municipal authorities" and the "uncontrolled development of tourism without adequate infrastructure".Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis travelled to Lefkada in July to announce "one of the largest water supply projects in Greece to cover the needs".- Extreme weather -The water shortfalls have been made worse by intense heat, which scientists say is at least in part a result of human-driven climate change. The mildest Greek winter on record has been followed by higher average temperatures this spring.Last month, the country's earliest-ever heatwave resulted in the hottest June since 1960, with temperatures reaching 43 degrees Celsius (109 Fahrenheit) in many parts of the country. The heat has also sparked an increase in wildfires, with more than a thousand recorded last month, more than double the number in the same month last year, authorities say.The head of the water utility EYDAP, Charalambos Sachinis, has said a "special plan" had been drawn up "to deal with extreme water shortages", including investments of around 750 million euros ($819 million).Elissavet Feloni, a hydrologist at the National Technical University of Athens, said the company was also planning to tap Lake Yliki, around 85 kilometres northwest of Athens, as an additional emergency source alongside the main Mornos reservoir."However, this is an energy-intensive solution because the water has to be pumped up, whereas the Mornos stream has a natural gradient," she said."For better water management, a central body needs to be set up to develop a comprehensive approach to resources across the country," she said.

China says joint naval drills with Russia have ended.

Beijing, July 18 (AFP) Jul 18, 2024-China said Thursday that joint military patrols with Russia had come to an end, hailing its deepening "understanding and trust" with its longtime ally amid febrile tensions with the West. The two countries have drawn closer in recent years and share hostile relations with the US-led defence alliance NATO, which last week called an infuriated China a "decisive enabler" of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.Beijing and Moscow both said last week that they were conducting joint drills known as Joint Sea-2024 off the coast of Zhanjiang, a city in southern China's Guangdong province. The area is part of the South China Sea, much of which Beijing claims to the chagrin of other littoral states. The Chinese navy said in an online statement Thursday that both sides had "completed all designated projects and exercises" by Wednesday afternoon.Seven warships took part in the six-day drills aimed at "jointly responding to maritime security threats", the navy said. The drills "strengthened professional exchanges, mutual understanding and trust between the Chinese and Russian navies (and) promoted the standardisation and systemisation of... bilateral practical cooperation", the navy added. It published photos of grey battleships sailing in two lines across a stretch of azure ocean before turning off in different directions as part of a farewell ceremony.Longtime socialist allies with historically tempestuous ties, China and Russia have recently touted their friendship as having "no limits", embodied by the supposed bonhomie between presidents Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin.Beijing has refused to condemn Moscow's invasion of Ukraine, insisting it is a neutral party in the conflict while strengthening diplomatic, economic and military ties with its vast northern neighbour. At a summit in Washington this month, NATO leaders said the two countries' partnership and Beijing's "large-scale support for Russia's defence industrial base" were a cause of "profound concern".China swiftly hit back by accusing NATO of "hyping up the so-called China threat and provoking confrontation and rivalry", defending Beijing's position on Ukraine as "open and above board".In a separate statement on Sunday, China's defence ministry said it had conducted joint naval patrols with Russia in the northern and western Pacific, adding that the exercise was not "targeted" at any other nation.

Turkish delegation visits Niger to boost military ties.

Niamey, Niger, July 18 (AFP) Jul 18, 2024-Turkish delegation visited Niger on Wednesday looking to strengthen military cooperation with the regime that came to power in a coup nearly a year ago.Niger has been run by a military regime since the July 2023 coup ousted President Mohamed Bazoum, who has been held as a prisoner ever since. The junta, led by General Abdourahamane Tiani, has turned its back on former Western allies such as France and the United States to sidle towards Turkey and Russia.Tiani on Wednesday received a Turkish delegation that included Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan as well as the country's defence and energy ministers and head of intelligence."We discussed with Niger what can be done to improve the defence industry and intelligence as part of the fight against terrorism... the main source of instability in the Sahel," Fidan told reporters in Niamey."Peace, security and stability in Africa are among our priorities."Nigerien Prime Minister Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine said in a statement broadcast on state television that he welcomed "the dynamism of cooperation with Turkey, particularly in the field of defence".Since the coup, Niamey has overhauled its international alliances, expelling French and US troops stationed in its territory to combat jihadists in the region.Germany said it would end military cooperation with Niger and withdraw its remaining troops from the West African country by August 31, due to a lack of "trust" with the military regime.France, Germany, the European Union and the United States have also suspended several aid programmes, calling on Niger to release Bazoum.Turkey's Bayraktar combat drones, meanwhile, are used by the armies of Mali and Burkina Faso, two of Niamey's allies also governed by juntas.bh-fo-els-pid/dhw/cwl

South Korea's KHNP wins multi-billion-dollar Czech nuclear tender.

Prague, July 17 (AFP) Jul 17, 2024-South Korean power giant KHNP has won a tender worth billions of dollars to build two nuclear units at a Czech power plant, Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala said on Wednesday.KHNP (Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Company) beat France's EDF in the tender launched in 2022 initially for one new reactor at the Soviet-built Dukovany power plant. But Prague said later it was seeking bids for a total of four new units: two for each of its two nuclear plants in Dukovany and Temelin, run by the state-owned power group CEZ."The Korean bid was better in all criteria assessed," Fiala told reporters."We have decided to build two units at Dukovany for now," Fiala said, adding that the government would discuss an option for another two units at Temelin.Fiala said the price offered by KHNP beat expectations, reaching around 200 billion Czech koruna ($8.65 billion) per unit if two units are built."We want to ensure energy security for future generations," Fiala added. He said the deal was the most expensive one in the modern history of the Czech Republic, adding that Czech companies would participate in about 60 percent of the construction. The government said earlier it expected to sign a deal with the winner by next March, the construction to begin in 2029, and the first new reactor to be launched in trial operation in 2036.KHNP and EDF submitted their binding bids for evaluation by CEZ in April, with KHNP offering its APR1000 reactor with an output of 1,050 megawatts designed for European plants.KHNP's chief executive Jooho Whang said on X "we will do our best to really build the APR1000 reactor in the Czech Republic, on time and within the budget."- 'The pride of Czech energy' -CEZ chief executive Daniel Benes said it was more advantageous to build two units at Dukovany because of synergies which cut the price."We won't have to do many things twice... but we will not build the two units at the same time, there is a time gap, which is ideally one or two years," he added.Industry and Trade Minister Jozef Sikela said the government would sign two deals with KHNP."One concerns the two units at Dukovany and the other is a binding option to build up to two units at Temelin," he added.CEZ currently runs six nuclear units at the two plants located in the south of the country -- four with 510-megawatt output each at Dukovany and two with 1,000-megawatt output each at Temelin. It is also planning the construction of small modular reactors, with the first one due to be installed at Temelin.Sikela said on Wednesday the two plants account for around 30 percent of the Czech electricity output."It will be roughly 50 percent in the future," he added, calling nuclear energy "the pride of Czech energy production".EDF had lobbied hard for the contracts and French President Emmanuel Macron visited Prague in March to push its bid.In a statement obtained by AFP, EDF acknowledged the result."EDF stands ready to pursue or relaunch discussions with CEZ and the Czech government should the preferred bidder process be modified or readjusted in the coming weeks or months," it added. The government earlier eliminated US giant Westinghouse from the tender over flaws in its offer and Russia's Rosatom and China's CGN on security concerns.frj/amj/rl-CEZ-TOSHIBA-CGN Power

China says halted nuclear arms talks with US over Taiwan weapons sales.

Beijing, July 17 (AFP) Jul 17, 2024-China said Wednesday it had suspended negotiations with the United States on nuclear non-proliferation and arms control in response to Washington's weapons sales to Taiwan -- a move the State Department called "unfortunate."The US and China in November held rare talks on nuclear arms control, part of a bid to ease mistrust ahead of a summit between presidents Joe Biden and Xi Jinping.Further dialogue had not been publicly announced since, with a White House official in January urging Beijing to respond "to some of our more substantive ideas on risk reduction."But China's foreign ministry on Wednesday said recent US sales of arms to self-ruled Taiwan were "seriously undermining the political atmosphere for continued arms control consultations between the two sides"."The US has... continued its arms sales to Taiwan, and taken a series of negative actions that seriously damage China's core interests and undermine political mutual trust," foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian said."For this reason, China has decided to suspend negotiations with the United States on a new round of arms control and non-proliferation consultations," he added. The United States switched diplomatic recognition from Taipei to Beijing in 1979 but it has remained Taiwan's most important partner and biggest arms supplier, sparking repeated condemnations from China.Washington in June approved two military sales to Taiwan worth approximately $300 million in total, mostly of spare and repair parts for the island's F-16 fighter jets.- Nuclear arsenal increasing -In a congressionally mandated report last October, the US Defense Department said China was developing its nuclear arsenal more quickly than the United States had anticipated.China possessed more than 500 operational nuclear warheads as of May 2023 and is likely to have more than 1,000 by 2030, it said. The United States currently possesses about 3,700 nuclear warheads, trailing Russia's roughly 4,500, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, which counts 410 warheads for China.Washington for its part criticised China for halting the negotiations."China has chosen to follow Russia's lead in asserting that engagement on arms control can't proceed when there are other challenges in the bilateral relationship," State Department spokesman Matthew Miller told reporters."That step they have taken is unfortunate," he said."We think this approach undermines strategic stability. It increases the risk of arms race dynamics."Lin had said that China is "willing to maintain communication with the United States on international arms control issues on the basis of mutual respect"."But the United States must respect China's core interests and create necessary conditions for dialogue," he warned.

WEEK OF DANIEL 9:27 WE KNOW ITS 7 YRS

The King of Jerusalem[1] was the supreme ruler of the Kingdom of Jerusalem, the Crusader state founded by Christian princes in 1099 when the First Crusade took the city.Godfrey of Bouillon, the first ruler of the Kingdom of Jerusalem, himself refused the title of king, and instead chose the title "Defender of the Holy Sepulchre". Thus, the title of king was only introduced for his successor, King Baldwin I in 1100. The city of Jerusalem was lost in 1187, but the Kingdom of Jerusalem survived (also known as the "Second Kingdom of Jerusalem"), moving its capital to Acre in 1191. The city of Jerusalem was re-captured in the Sixth Crusade, during 1229–39 and 1241–44. The Kingdom of Jerusalem was finally dissolved with the fall of Acre and the end of the Crusades in the Holy Land in 1291.After the Crusader States ceased to exist, the title of King of Jerusalem was claimed by a number of European noble houses descended from the kings of Cyprus or the kings of Naples. The (purely ceremonial) title of King of Jerusalem is currently used by Felipe VI of Spain. It was claimed by Otto von Habsburg as Habsburg pretender, and by the kings of Italy until 1946.

ISAIAH 28:14-19 (THIS IS THE 7 YR TREATY COVENANT OF DANIEL 9:27)
14 Wherefore hear the word of the LORD, ye scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem.
15 Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:
16 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.17 Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.
18 And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.
19 From the time that it goeth forth it shall take you: for morning by morning shall it pass over, by day and by night: and it shall be a vexation only to understand the report.

DR SAMUEL DOCTORIANS VISION - SECOND ANGEL: MIDDLE EAST
Then I saw that the second angel had a sickle in his hand, such as is used in harvesting. The second angel said: "Harvest time has come in Israel and the countries all the way to Iran."I saw those countries in a few split seconds."All of Turkey and those [inaudible] countries that have refused me and refused my message of love shall hate each other and kill one another."I saw the angel raise the sickle and come down on all the Middle East countries. I saw Iran, Persia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, all of Georgia - Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, all of Asia Minor - full of blood. I saw blood all over these countries. And I saw fire; Nuclear weapons used in many of those countries. Smoke rising from everywhere. Sudden destruction – men destroying one another. I heard these words:"Israel, Oh Israel, the great judgment has come." The angel said, "The chosen, the church, the remnant, shall be purified. The Spirit of God shall prepare the children of God."I saw fires rising to heaven. The angel said: "This is the final judgment. My church shall be purified, protected and ready for the final day. Men will die from thirst. Water shall be scarce all over the Middle East. Rivers shall dry up, and men will fight for water in those countries."The angel showed me that the United Nations shall be broken in pieces because of the crisis in the Middle East. There shall be no more United Nations. The angel with the sickle shall reap the harvest.

Knesset votes overwhelmingly against Palestinian statehood, days before PM’s US trip-Motion backed by coalition along with some MKs from Gantz’s party; vote could further irk Democrats who support two-state solution and are critical of how Israel has fought in Gaza-By Jacob Magid-Today, 3:35 am-JUL 18,24

The Knesset early Thursday voted overwhelmingly to pass a resolution rejecting the establishment of a Palestinian state. The resolution was co-sponsored by parties in both Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition together with right-wing parties from the opposition and even received support from Benny Gantz’s centrist National Unity party.Lawmakers from Opposition Leader Yair Lapid’s center-left Yesh Atid party left the plenum to avoid backing the measure, even though he has spoken in favor of a two-state solution. The only ones to back the resolution were lawmakers from the Labor, Ra’am and Hadash-Ta’al parties. The initiative was passed just days before Netanyahu’s visit to the US to address a joint session of Congress and meet with President Joe Biden at the White House. The move was likely to further irk Democrats uncomfortable with embracing an Israeli government that increasingly rejects a two-state solution.Already in February, the Knesset passed a resolution sponsored by Netanyahu rejecting the establishment of a Palestinian state, but that motion specifically addressed the unilateral establishment of such a state amid reports that countries abroad were considering recognizing a Palestinian state absent a peace agreement with Israel. This resolution — passed 68-9 — altogether rejects the establishment of a Palestinian state, even as part of a negotiated settlement with Israel.“The Knesset of Israel firmly opposes the establishment of a Palestinian state west of Jordan. The establishment of a Palestinian state in the heart of the Land of Israel will pose an existential danger to the State of Israel and its citizens, perpetuate the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and destabilize the region,” the resolution stated.“It will only be a matter of a short time until Hamas takes over the Palestinian state and turns it into a radical Islamic terror base, working in coordination with the Iranian-led axis to eliminate the State of Israel,” it continued. “Promoting the idea of a Palestinian state at this time will be a reward for terrorism and will only encourage Hamas and its supporters to see this as a victory, thanks to the massacre of October 7, 2023, and a prelude to the takeover of jihadist Islam in the Middle East.”The vote came as Netanyahu’s July 24 speech was already causing consternation among many Democrats, many of whom are torn between their long-standing support for Israel and dismay over the way Israel has conducted military operations in Gaza during the war with Hamas. While some Democrats are saying they will attend out of respect for Israel, a larger and growing faction wants no part in it, creating an extraordinarily charged atmosphere at a gathering that normally amounts to a ceremonial, bipartisan show of support for an American ally.Further complicating matters for Biden and the Democrats is the president’s increasingly perilous political situation, with growing calls for him to drop out of the race as trails badly in polls against challenger Donald Trump. And in a further curveball, the White House announced Wednesday that Biden would be going to Delaware to self-isolate after testing positive for COVID. It remained unclear how the development could impact Monday’s scheduled meeting with Netanyahu in Washington. Biden’s doctor saying he was taking Paxlovid, which typically has a five-day regimen, but did not specify a timetable for his expected recovery.Times of Israel staff and agencies contributed to this report.

UN chief says Israel’s settlement activity in West Bank hampering two-state solution-Guterres accuses Israel of changing geography and attempting to extend sovereignty over area-By AFP and ToI Staff 17 July 2024, 11:29 pm

Israel’s policy toward the West Bank is dooming any prospect of a two-state solution with the Palestinians, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said Wednesday.Violence and arrests have soared in the territory since the Gaza war erupted over Hamas’s October 7 attack.Through administrative and legal steps, Israel is changing the geography of the West Bank, Guterres said in a statement read by his chief of staff, Courtenay Rattray, during a meeting of the Security Council.Settlement expansion is expected to speed up due to big land seizures in strategic areas and changes to planning, land management and governance, Guterres added.“Recent developments are driving a stake through the heart of any prospect for a two-state solution,” said the UN chief. He said Israel is taking steps to extend sovereignty over the West Bank.Guterres said Israel has taken punitive steps against the Palestinian Authority and legalized five Israeli outposts in the West Bank.Israelis have built such outposts in the West Bank since 1967.“We must change course. All settlement activity must cease immediately,” Guterres said.He said Israeli settlements are a flagrant violation of international law and an obstacle to peace with the Palestinians. The International Court of Justice is set to deliver an advisory, non-binding opinion on the legal consequences of Israel’s “occupation of Palestinian territories” on July 19. While Israel has ignored such opinions in the past, the ICJ ruling on Friday could add political pressure over the nine-month-old war against Palestinian terror group Hamas in the Gaza Strip.Guterres also repeated his call for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza war and the release of all hostages.“The humanitarian situation in Gaza is a moral stain on us all,” Guterres said. The war began with Hamas’s unprecedented October 7 attack on Israel in which terrorists murdered some 1,200 people, mostly civilians. The terrorists also seized 251 hostages, 116 of whom are still in Gaza, including 42 the Israeli military says are dead. The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry says more than 38,000 people in the Strip have been killed or are presumed dead in the fighting so far, though the toll cannot be verified and does not differentiate between civilians and fighters. Israel says it has killed some 15,000 combatants in battle and some 1,000 terrorists inside Israel during the October 7 attack.Since October 7, troops have arrested some 4,400 wanted Palestinians across the West Bank, including more than 1,850 affiliated with Hamas.According to the Palestinian Authority health ministry, more than 560 West Bank Palestinians have been killed in that time. The IDF says the vast majority of them were killed in clashes with gunmen during raids or terrorists carrying out attacks.During the same period, 22 Israelis, including security personnel, have been killed in terror attacks in Israel and the West Bank. Another five members of the security forces were killed in clashes with terror operatives in the West Bank.

Gamliel: Ignore coalition threats; Regev: It’s an open wound-Urging deal, Mossad chief said to warn time running out for young female hostages-At cabinet meeting, IDF chief, Gallant and two other ministers reportedly stress need for deal to release the captives; PM quoted saying Israel will put ‘bullet in Sinwar’s head’ By ToI Staff 17 July 2024, 11:29 pmUpdated: Today, 3:41 am

Mossad chief David Barnea told a security cabinet meeting Tuesday that young female hostages held by Hamas don’t have time to wait for a new hostage deal framework, according to unsourced leaks from the gathering that were widely reported by Hebrew media outlets Wednesday.“It could take long weeks. The girls in captivity don’t have time to wait for changes in the proposal under discussion,” Barnea was quoted as saying in the closed-door meeting. It was not clear why Barnea focused specifically on the women.Other people at the meeting backed the need for a swift agreement, the reports said.“It’s an open wound in society,” Transportation Minister Miri Regev was quoted as saying of the plight of hostages, now in their 10th month of captivity. “We are obligated to the public and to the citizens who were not protected by the IDF and Shin Bet on October 7.“There is no perfect deal but there is an opportunity here that must not be missed,” Regev reportedly said.“Women can give birth after nine months and that is a disaster that you cannot recover from,” Intelligence Minister Gila Gamliel was quoted as saying, in reference to concerns the female hostages may have been raped in captivity.Gamliel reportedly pressed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to ignore threats from National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who both oppose any deal that ends the fighting before Hamas is destroyed and who have threatened to topple the government if necessary to prevent one.“This deal is the ‘Netanyahu deal’ and under your name, and you need to move forward with it all the way and not be concerned with various coalition threats from Ben Gvir and Smotrich,” Gamliel was said to implore the prime minister.“If she goes on like that I will leave the room,” Ben Gvir responded and pointed out that Gamliel is not a full member of the top-tier security cabinet.“The lady is an observer,” Ben Gvir said. “It is about time that you put her in her place. She doesn’t even represent the positions of Likud and her discourse is unacceptable.”“Gila, stop,” Netanyahu reportedly told Gamliel while insisting that he was not worried by political pressure. Rather, he asserted, it was Hamas that was feeling the heat.“Military pressure against Hamas is what will in the end bring the hostages,” he said, reinforcing his oft-stated belief that the military offensive is the most effective way of pushing Hamas into an agreement.“I oppose a deal that is reckless,” Ben Gvir declared.Gamliel then retorted that Ben Gvir had said the same thing during a previous deal in November that had secured the release of 105 hostages.“Even then I was right,” Ben Gvir argued. “Look at how many soldiers fell afterward. Instead of wiping out Hamas, we stopped, and it has cost us.”The army has not indicated that the week-long pause in fighting during the previous deal led to more soldier deaths. The deal currently on the table would see the release of hostages held by Palestinian terror group Hamas in return for some form of ceasefire in the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip. Also Wednesday, the ultra-Orthodox Shas party urged Netanyahu to ignore the threats from his far-right coalition partners and to push ahead with the deal.“Shas backs your efforts to return the hostages. We are convinced that the conditions that have been created due to the military pressure and the targeted assassinations create an appropriate moment to reach a deal that safeguards the vital security interests of Israel and brings the hostages home,” Shas said in a letter to Netanyahu that was released to the media.Shas, which is part of the coalition, called on Netanyahu “not to fear the voices in the coalition opposing the deal,” saying it backed the premier to “continue to act with responsibility in fulfilling the commandment to redeem captives, a commandment of the highest order.”Netanyahu has reportedly hardened Israel’s position in internationally mediated talks for a deal, spurred on by intelligence assessments that Hamas is weary, weakened, and keen to end the fighting. Two key points that the prime minister has seized on are Israel’s ability to directly prevent weapons smuggling to Hamas through tunnels under the Egypt-Hamas border, and preventing Hamas from moving its fighters from southern Gaza to the north by embedding them among Palestinians displaced by the war when they are permitted to return to the north. The reports said Barnea warned that any attempt to set up a system to monitor who moves north would take long weeks that hostages did not have.Gallant also warned there was little likelihood the sides could reach an agreement over an apparatus to monitor Palestinians moving from southern Gaza to the north, the Walla outlet reported, citing an unnamed source at the cabinet meeting. The current deal proposal mentions only that Palestinians moving north will do so “without carrying arms while returning,” but doesn’t specify how that will be ensured. The defense minister also repeated his opinion that Israel could prevent smuggling under the Egypt-Gaza border using monitoring equipment, an option that has reportedly been floated at negotiations talks. The plight of female hostages was further highlighted Tuesday when the parents of five female IDF soldiers held by Hamas published fresh images of the hostages from the earlier days of their captivity that showed they had suffered physical harm.Hagit Pe’er, head of the Na’amat women’s rights group, said in a statement that Barnea’s warnings of the danger to the women represented “real alarm bells — the writing is on the wall, and the prime minister cannot say he didn’t know; it’s time that the fate of the girls and all the abductees worry the prime minister more than the threats of his coalition partners.”According to Channel 12, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi also backed Barnea in urging Netanyahu to advance with the current proposal rather than try to change terms at this stage. The network reported that security officials told the ministers “the odds of reaching a deal are not bad, and this can happen very soon” as Hamas “is in its most difficult state since the war started.” The officials warned that even the current proposal, if approved without any alterations, could take weeks to finalize, making it even more important to seize the current opportunity for a deal, Channel 12 reported.According to Walla, Netanyahu criticized security officials and ministers who have made public statements contrary to his strategy of increased military pressure, warning it weakens Israel’s position in negotiations. The security cabinet meeting already grabbed headlines with reports earlier in the day that Netanyahu seemingly downplayed the threat hostages face in Gaza.“We shouldn’t be anxious,” Netanyahu told the meeting, according to the Ynet news site, referring to the drawn-out negotiations for a hostage release and ceasefire deal in Gaza. “Hamas is the one that should be anxious. The hostages are suffering but they are not dying.”The Prime Minister’s Office did not issue a confirmation or denial of the claim.Kan news on Wednesday evening quoted Netanyahu differently, reporting that he had said: “We won’t lose our hostages. They’re alive, they’re not dead but their conditions are dire, and so we must do everything to get them out as soon as possible.” The broadcaster also reported that Netanyahu claimed Hamas commanders are pushing leader Yahya Sinwar to surrender, adding that Israel was trying “to put a bullet in his head.”One official who spoke to The Times of Israel anonymously also did not comment on Netanyahu’s statement directly, but said Netanyahu “actually stressed in the cabinet meeting that we need to do everything in order to bring all the hostages home as soon as possible, and this can only be done by increasing the pressure.”Netanyahu’s ostensible assessment contradicts those of senior ministers in his government.Gallant has said in recent closed meetings that if a deal isn’t reached in the next two weeks, the abductees’ fate will be “sealed,” according to the Ynet.According to the outlet, Gallant believes conditions have ripened for a deal with Hamas, but accuses Netanyahu of hindering progress in order to retain the support of far-right elements of the coalition.Israel believes that 120 hostages are being held in Gaza — of whom dozens are confirmed by the IDF to be dead.On Wednesday, an Israeli delegation arrived in Egypt to continue ceasefire talks as Israel and Hamas consider the latest proposal, three Egyptian airport officials said.International mediators continue to push Israel and Hamas toward the proposal which was initially floated by Israel and promoted by US President Joe Biden at the end of May. The proposal calls for a three-phase deal that would see Israel withdraw from Gaza in return for the hostages and the release of hundreds of Palestinian security convicts held in Israeli prisons. A major sticking point is Israel’s insistence that it have the option to resume the war later so it can continue its declared war goal to destroy Hamas, while the latter is demanding an end to the fighting. The Israeli delegation includes six officials, the airport officials said without disclosing identities. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to discuss the arrival with the media.

Two protesters burst into UN Security Council meeting, demanding release of hostages-UN official says women crying ‘Free the hostages’ — one of them the head of Israel’s Teachers’ Union — left when asked to; US envoy calls for pressure on Hamas to accept deal-By Reuters, Jacob Magid-and ToI Staff 17 July 2024, 9:50 pm

NEW YORK — A meeting of the United Nations Security Council on the Middle East was briefly interrupted on Wednesday when two protesters stood up with signs and yelled for the release of Israeli hostages held by the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The demonstration came as Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov began to address the 15-member body after a statement by Israel’s UN Ambassador Gilad Erdan. Protests inside the UN headquarters in New York are rare.Lavrov, who was chairing the meeting because Russia is the council president for July, responded: “I don’t understand, speak more clearly. One of you can speak clearly to say what you want to say. I see you don’t wish to do so, very well.”Diplomats in the Security Council chamber said the women, dressed in black, yelled “Free the hostages.” UN security asked the women to leave the chamber and they did so, a UN official said.Israel’s UN mission did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the protest. One of the women was Israel’s Teachers Union chief, Yaffa Ben-David, who later told Ynet that it was her “duty to influence in every place I can, even if it means I’m expelled from the hall.”“It’s time for the UN to understand that this is about human life and that we, the people of Israel, won’t give up on a single hostage. [Hostage] Ohad Yahalomi is married to one of our teachers, who I’ve personally supported, and seen her pain and struggle from up close,” she said.Meanwhile, US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield called on the Security Council to pressure Hamas to accept the ceasefire and hostage release deal being negotiated.Thomas-Greenfield said Israel and Hamas have agreed on a framework, which was based on the Israeli proposal submitted in May, outlined by US President Joe Biden in a subsequent speech and enshrined in a resolution adopted by the council.“There are still gaps to be closed, and this council must keep pressure on Hamas to accept the deal outlined in Resolution 2735, and begin implementing it without delay and without conditions. This is what we all want here in this council, it’s what the Palestinians in Gaza want,” she said. The US envoy noted that improvements have been made in the distribution of humanitarian aid throughout Gaza since a recent breakdown of law and order. However, many requests by the UN and other aid organizations “particularly related to communications equipment vital for deconfliction processes, remain unresolved.“We urge the Government of Israel to work with the UN to overcome these and other roadblocks,” Thomas-Greenfield said.“Palestinian civilians are living in hell. Over and over, they have had to flee from one place to another in search of safety. And so many people have lost parents and siblings, children and friends, including in a recent IDF strike on a UN-supported school in Nuseirat camp,” she continued.IDF said it struck terror operatives who were using the school to plan and carry out attacks against troops operating in Gaza. It said it took several steps to mitigate harm to civilians, including aerial surveillance and use of “precision munitions.”Thomas-Greenfield stressed the administration’s continued concern with settler violence in the West Bank and condemned recent Israeli steps to expand its footprint there, saying that “unilateral actions, like the Government of Israel’s settlement program, are inconsistent with international law and detrimental to a two-state solution.”The war in Gaza began when Hamas attacked southern Israel on October 7, murdering some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and taking 251 hostages, including civilians and soldiers, back into Gaza. The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry says more than 38,000 people in the Strip have been killed or are presumed dead in the fighting so far, though the toll cannot be verified and does not differentiate between civilians and fighters. Israel says it has killed some 15,000 combatants in battle and some 1,000 terrorists inside Israel during the October 7 attack.Meanwhile, it is believed that 116 hostages taken on October 7 remain in Gaza — not all of them alive.
