Although reported COVID-19 case levels in the U.S. are still falling after a viral resurgence over the summer, there are preliminary indicators that infection rates may be back on the rise across the country.In recent weeks, federal data has shown that the number of U.S. wastewater sites reporting increases in the presence of COVID-19 in their samples appears to be back on the rise, following declines seen throughout the latter part of the summer.In the U.S., about 50% of wastewater sites, which are currently providing data to the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention, have reported an increase in the presence of the COVID-19 virus in their wastewater over the last 15 days, up from the 40% of sites reporting increases last month.From coast to coast, every area of the country has seen a rise, according to a regional breakdown from Biobot, a wastewater monitoring company based in Cambridge, Massachusetts.The Northeast, in particular, appears to be seeing higher growth levels, reporting the highest wastewater levels of any region, Biobot data shows."Increase in virus concentration found in wastewater has [predictably] been a key indicator of a forthcoming COVID surge. The new booster is what’s known as a bivalent vaccine, meaning it offers protection from more than one virus or subtype of a virus. So far the available boosters and primary vaccines have been monovalent, targeting the original strain of SARS-CoV-2. But Pfizer's and Moderna’s new bivalent boosters target both the original strain and the BA.4 and BA.5 Omicron subvariants, which the FDA says are responsible for most cases in the U.S. and are expected to circulate this fall and winter.The bivalent boosters will replace the monovalent boosters that have been used in the U.S., but Pfizer's and Moderna’s monovalent formulations will continue to be used as primary vaccines.While this is the first time a bivalent vaccine has been used in the U.S. to fight COVID-19, the employment of bivalent vaccines is nothing new. Dr. Wafaa El-Sadr, a professor of epidemiology and medicine at Columbia University, told Yahoo News that the polio vaccine, for example, was developed to protect against multiple subtypes of the poliovirus, and that this technique “is a good way of keeping up with the coronavirus as it evolves over time.”The Pfizer booster is approved in children and adults ages 12 and older, and the Moderna booster is approved in adults ages 18 and older.Some have argued that a fall vaccination campaign should focus on reaching the most vulnerable populations, including older and immunocompromised Americans. But during a press conference on Wednesday, the FDA pointed to risks associated with "long COVID" as one reason the new boosters should be available more broadly, saying that a third dose of vaccine can probably reduce the chance of getting long COVID by more than half.Younger children may be eligible to start receiving the new booster “in the coming weeks,” according to a statement by the CDC, though primary vaccination rates among this group remain low. As of Aug. 24, 37% of children ages 5 to 11 had received one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, and only 7% of children ages 6 months to 4 years had received a dose, according to the CDC.Individuals will need to wait at least two months after receiving their primary vaccination or at least two months after their most recent booster dose before they can get the new bivalent booster.In a statement on Thursday, CDC Director Rochelle Walensky said, “If you are eligible, there is no bad time to get your COVID-19 booster.”El-Sadr advised Americans to get ahead of a possible spike in cases as temperatures drop and people begin congregating indoors.“I think it’s also important to keep in mind that the time to get a booster is not in the middle of the surge,” El-Sadr said. “We recommend that people take the next booster dose before the anticipated surge, meaning taking these booster doses early in the fall before we encounter a potential surge of COVID-19 this winter.”U.S. regulators have said that they are confident in the data supporting the authorization of both Pfizer's and Moderna’s bivalent boosters.“We have worked closely with the vaccine manufacturers to ensure the development of these updated boosters was done safely and efficiently,” said Dr. Peter Marks, director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, in a statement released on Wednesday by the agency.The FDA said the decision to grant emergency-use authorization for the Omicron boosters at this time was based on “the totality of available evidence,” including the extensive safety and effectiveness data of the current mRNA-based COVID-19 vaccines, which have now been administered to billions of people worldwide.The agency also evaluated data from human studies of bivalent booster vaccines developed by Pfizer and Moderna targeting Omicron BA.1, an earlier version of the virus that is no longer circulating in the U.S. These formulations, however, are “similar to each of the vaccines being authorized,” the FDA said, and give the agency confidence that the approved shots will also be as safe and effective.In these studies, both Pfizer's and Moderna’s bivalent vaccines targeting Omicron BA.1 were found to generate a significant amount of antibodies in humans compared with the companies’ current booster shots, which target only the ancestral strain of the coronavirus. Instead, the FDA assessed the shots using data from research on mice.El-Sadr said this approach is not unusual and pointed out that we rely on mice data to update the annual influenza vaccine.“Every year, essentially, we conduct the studies and look for the immune response for the vaccine within animals,” El-Sadr said of the flu vaccine. “So it’s not unheard of, and it’s actually been the norm, that as you build over time new types of vaccines, you are measuring their effectiveness by comparing the amount of antibodies that are produced in various animal models,” she added.Dr. Monica Gandhi, an infectious disease doctor and professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, recognized the importance of the animal data and said she was looking forward to these shots becoming available. However, she said that since this is the first time the mRNA-based COVID-19 vaccines have been updated, she would have liked to see some human data before the shots were made available to the public.“Being the first time, I think it would be really helpful for the public health trust to have a little more human data,” Gandhi said. “It may not need to be, you know, a full-scale trial and a big trial, but really just even showing [that] antibody responses increase in humans; even that, I think would give the public more trust that we've done a little more vetting of this updated vaccine,” she added.Both Pfizer and Moderna plan to run human trials for their bivalent boosters. I’m very confident about this,” Califf said.With breakthrough cases common even among fully vaccinated and boosted Americans, Marks said the FDA is hoping this new vaccine will not only guard against hospitalization and death, but also offer protection from symptomatic disease the way the first crop of vaccines did in late 2020 and early 2021.“We don’t know for a fact yet whether we will get to that same level, but that is the goal,” Marks said. “The hope here is not to have to give lots of vaccines each year. WASHINGTON (JTA) — A poll showed that the US Supreme Court’s removal of abortion protections and concerns about democracy are driving Jewish turnout in November, which will favor Democrats substantially.The poll released Thursday by the Jewish Electorate Institute, a body with a board made up of prominent Jewish Democrats, found that 70 percent of Jewish voters favored Democrats in the midterm congressional elections, while 24% favored Republicans.Asked to select from a list the two issues most important to them as they considered their vote, 45% of respondents listed fears about democracy as one of the issues, and 38% listed the court’s reversal of Roe v. Wade, the 1973 decision guaranteeing a right to an abortion.Respondents were highly motivated to vote, the poll found; 9.3 was the mean in responses to a question measuring motivation with 0 as not motivated and 10 as extremely motivated. Asked if the abortion reversal motivated them to vote, 56% of respondents overall said it made them more motivated, with 44% saying it made them much more motivated. NEW YORK — Yeshiva University on Thursday said the US Supreme Court had provided a “roadmap” for blocking an LGBTQ student club, even as the court dismissed the university’s request to intervene in the case.The flagship Modern Orthodox university in New York City had asked the highest US court to overrule a state court’s demand that the university recognize a campus Pride club.The Supreme Court said in a 5-4 decision on Wednesday that Yeshiva University needed to exhaust other options for appeals before it would hear the case. The decision means the university must recognize the club, at least for now.The decision was made on procedural grounds, not the larger religious issues, and the dissenting justices said the university could appeal to the Supreme Court again down the road and would “likely win” in such a scenario.“The Supreme Court has laid out the roadmap for us to find expedited relief and we will follow their instructions,” university president Rabbi Ari Berman said in a Thursday statement.The case hinges on whether the university is a secular institution, bound by New York State human rights laws, or a religious institution with beliefs protected by the First Amendment.The university has attempted to tread a line between welcoming LGBTQ students and refusing to recognize the YU Pride Alliance on religious grounds.“Every faith-based university in the country has the right to work with its students, including its LGBTQ students, to establish the clubs, places and spaces that fit within its faith tradition,” Berman said. “Yeshiva University simply seeks that same right of self-determination.”“At the same time, as our commitment to and love for our LGBTQ students are unshakeable, we continue to extend our hand in invitation to work together to create a more inclusive campus life consistent with our Torah values,” he said.The university appealed to the court late last month, citing its rights under the First Amendment, which protects the free exercise of religion. The university argued that recognizing YU Pride Alliance would be contrary to its beliefs. Recognition would grant the Pride club funding and other benefits.A New York state judge in June ruled the school must recognize the group, a decision that the university is appealing in the state court system. The Supreme Court said the university needed to exhaust its other options for reversing the decision before coming before the nation’s highest court.“The application is denied because it appears that applicants have at least two further avenues for expedited or interim state court relief,” the court said. The university can continue to appeal in New York courts or file an appeal with the federal Appellate Division.If both those efforts fail, the university “may return to this court,” the justices wrote.The conservative Justices Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett dissented. Justices John G. Roberts, Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan and Brett Kavanaugh were in the majority. Roberts and Kavanaugh are conservatives.The dissenting justices sided with Yeshiva University, saying, “The First Amendment guarantees the right to the free exercise of religion, and if that provision means anything, it prohibits a State from enforcing its own preferred interpretation of Holy Scripture. The court has a conservative majority that has previously ruled in favor of religious groups.Katie Rosenfeld, a lawyer for YU Pride Alliance, told The Times of Israel that Wednesday’s decision was a “victory for Yeshiva University students who are simply seeking basic rights that are uncontested at peer universities.”“We are confident that we will continue to overcome the administration’s aggressive litigation strategies against its own LGBTQ+ students,” she said. “At the end of the day, Yeshiva University students will have a club for peer support this year, and the sky is not going to fall down. No longer will students be denied a safe and supportive space on campus to be together.”The Jewish Queer Youth advocacy group said the Supreme Court decision was “a turning point for LGBTQ Jews in the Orthodox community who, for too long, have been told that their identities are not a sin, yet made to feel like their self-worth is against Jewish law.”Sotomayor had granted Yeshiva University an emergency request last week, while the justices weighed the case, that had temporarily blocked the lower court’s ruling. There was even an informal queue of people waiting to join the official one.King Charles III and his siblings will be standing vigil around the flag-draped coffin on Friday evening.Beckham was spotted in the line of mourners near Britain’s Houses of Parliament at lunchtime Friday. The head of the Hadash-Ta’al alliance predicted his faction would be a major juggernaut in post-election coalition jockeying, after his erstwhile Joint List of Arab-led parties splintered into two separate slates Thursday night.Hadash chief Ayman Odeh’s comments, following a surprise 11th-hour decision to split with the hardline Balad party and run only as an alliance with Ta’al, reflected the shifting political dynamics created by the divorce, even as analysts questioned whether Hadash-Ta’al would manage to secure enough votes to return to the Knesset and be a player.“We will be the most important party the day after elections,” Odeh, head of communist Hadash, told the press after submitting the joint slate alongside Ta’al head Ahmed Tibi Thursday night. “Everyone will come to us and we’ll make them wait in line until they respect us and our constituency.”However, the split is widely predicted to help ease Likud leader Benjamin Netanyahu’s path back to power, with Balad predicted to fall well below the necessary 3.25% ballot threshold to enter the Knesset. NPR interviewed three of the migrants, were part of a group of 50 flown on two chartered planes from Texas to Martha's Vineyard.The island, part of Massachusetts, is well-known as a vacation spot for wealthy liberals like Barack Obama and John Kerry, who own property there.The migrants said, per NPR, that a woman they identified as "Perla" lured them from a shelter in San Antonio into boarding a plane with promises of expedited work permits in Boston."She (Perla) offered us help.
