She said her running mate for party co-chair, Pastor Donald Eason of Metro Church of Christ in Sterling Heights, Michigan, was the one who had “baptized me into the Christian faith.”Epstein, the general manager of an oil corporation, was the co-chair of former US president Donald Trump’s successful 2016 campaign in her state. She then ran for Congress in 2018 and for the University of Michigan Board of Regents last year but lost both races.During her 2018 congressional race, Epstein initially highlighted her roots in the Detroit area Jewish community. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Thursday that proposed legislation by the ultra-Orthodox Shas party to impose sweeping new restrictions on freedom of worship at the Western Wall had been frozen.Netanyahu said he had spoken with coalition chiefs and they agreed the bill “won’t come up right now.” In a message to coalition party leaders, Justice Minister Yariv Levin, who heads the Ministerial Committee on Legislation, specified that the bill would not be brought before the committee when it convenes Sunday. Later Thursday, Shas back-tracked on the bill as well.The extraordinary legislation would ban egalitarian, mixed-gender prayer at the section of the holy site where it is now allowed, criminalize the activity of the Women of the Wall prayer rights group, and ban visitors from wearing attire deemed immodest.It would penalize offenders with a six-month prison term or a NIS 10,000 ($2,900) fine.The bill, which had been mentioned in coalition agreements in general terms, was added at the last moment to Sunday’s agenda of the Ministerial Committee for Legislation, with Hebrew media reporting that Shas party leader Aryeh Deri wanted the bill to pass its preliminary reading in the plenum over the next few days.The Ynet news site cited sources in Likud saying the party had been caught by surprise by Shas’s move. In Syria, local rescue crews said aid delays may have cost lives. The U.N. has drawn criticism for not taking exceptional measures to deliver aid in the warn-torn country. Karam Shaar, a nonresident scholar at the Middle East Institute, said the world organization should have broken protocol and used multiple crossing routes into Syria or provided airdrops. Lack of heavy machinery and other equipment often forced rescuers to clear rubble with their bare hands. Still, unimaginable rescues took place.“After 50 hours of work, we pulled out a man and little girl alive,” said Abada Zikri, a first responder with the White Helmets in Harem, a town of about 20,000 people in Syria’s Idlib province. The White Helmets are a volunteer organization that lends aid in opposition-held parts of Syria.Sanitary conditions worsen amid slow recovery-Resat Gozlu, a resident of Turkey's Adiyaman province, told the BBC that rescue teams did not arrive in her city until almost three days after Monday's quake. Gozlu, now living on the floor of a packed sports complex with his family, says many people are still trapped under the rubble. Others have died of hypothermia, he said. The National Security Council is readying a NIS 50 billion ($14 billion) plan to prepare Israeli towns and cities for a potential major earthquake similar to that witnessed in Turkey and Syria this week, according to a Thursday report.Channel 12 said the council met in the aftermath of the deadly 7.8-magnitude earthquake, which also saw multiple aftershocks felt across Israel.The plan, if approved by the ministerial committee responsible for earthquake preparedness in the coming week, will then be forwarded to the government for approval.It is said to call for a major financial investment in preparedness, with the National Security Council asking for NIS 3 billion ($858 million) to immediately reinforce 40,000 apartments located in at-risk areas such as Afula, Beit She’an and Tiberias, which sit along the Great Rift Valley, prone to major temblors.Over a five-year period, the government will be asked to invest a massive NIS 50 billion in order to strengthen 600,000 residential buildings and 80,000 non-residential structures such as office buildings and hospitals, the report said.Last year, a comptroller report found there were 600,000 buildings in the country that do not meet the standard for earthquake resistance. BEIRUT (AP) — For years, the people of Aleppo bore the brunt of bombardment and fighting when their city, once Syria’s largest and most cosmopolitan, was among the civil war’s fiercest battle zones. Even that didn’t prepare them for the new devastation and terror wreaked by this week’s earthquake.The natural disaster piled on many human-made ones, multiplying the suffering in Aleppo and Syria more broadly.Fighting largely halted in Aleppo in 2016, but only a small number of the numerous damaged and destroyed buildings had been rebuilt. The population has also more recently struggled with Syria’s economic downslide, which has sent food prices soaring and residents thrown into poverty.The shock of the quake is all too much.Hovig Shehrian said that during the worst of the war in Aleppo, in 2014, he and his parents fled their home in a front-line area because of the shelling and sniper fire. For years, they moved from neighborhood to neighborhood to avoid the fighting.“It was part of our daily routine. Whenever we heard a sound, we left, we knew who to call and what to do,” the 24-year-old said. “But… we didn’t know what to do with the earthquake. I was worried we were going to die.”Monday’s pre-dawn 7.8-magnitude quake, centered about 70 miles (112 kilometers) away in Turkey, jolted Aleppans awake and sent them fleeing into the street under a cold winter rain. Dozens of buildings across the city collapsed. More than 360 people were killed in the city and hundreds of others were injured. Workers were still digging three days later through the rubble, looking for the dead and the survivors. Across southern Turkey and northern Syria, more than 11,000 were killed.Even those whose buildings still stood remain afraid to return. Many are sheltering in schools. A Maronite Christian monastery took in more than 800 people, particularly women, children and the elderly, crammed into every room.“Until now we are not sleeping in our homes. Some people are sleeping in their cars,” said Imad al-Khal, the secretary-general of Christian denominations in Aleppo, who was helping organize shelters.For many, the earthquake was a new sort of terror — a shock even after what they endured during the war.For Aleppo, the war was a long and brutal siege. Rebels captured the eastern part of the city in 2012, soon after Syria’s civil war began. Over the next years, Russian-backed government forces battled to uproot them.Syrian and Russian airstrikes and shelling flattened entire blocks. Bodies were found in the river dividing the two parts of the city. On the government-held western side, residents faced regular mortar and rocket fire from opposition fighters.A final offensive led to months of urban fighting, finally ending in December 2016 with a government victory. Opposition fighters and supporters were evacuated, and government control was imposed over the entire city. Activist groups estimate some 31,000 people were killed in the four years of fighting, and almost the entire population of the eastern sector was displaced.Aleppo became a symbol of how Syrian President Bashar Assad succeeded in clawing back most opposition-held territory around Syria’s heartland with backing from Russia and Iran at the cost of horrific destruction. The opposition holds a last, small enclave in the northwest, centered on Idlib province and parts of Aleppo province, which was also devastated by Monday’s quake.But Aleppo never recovered. Any reconstruction has been carried out by individuals. The city’s current population remains well below its pre-2011 population of 4.5 million. Much of the eastern sector remains in ruins and empty.Buildings damaged during the war or built shoddily during the fighting regularly collapse. One collapse, on January 22, left 16 people dead. Another in September killed 11 people, including three children.Aleppo was once the industrial powerhouse of Syria, said Armenak Tokmajyan, a non-resident fellow at Carnegie Middle East who is originally from the city. Now, he said, it’s economically marginalized, basic infrastructure in gas and electricity is lacking, and its population – which had hoped for improvements after the fighting ended – only saw things get worse.They have also now experienced the physical — and psychological — blow of the earthquake, Tokmajyan said. “It left them wondering, do they really deserve this fate or not? I think the trauma is big and it will take some time until they swallow this really bitter pill after [more than] 10 years of war.”Rodin Allouch, an Aleppo native, covered the war for a Syrian TV station.“I used to be on the front line, getting video shots, getting scoops. I was never scared. Rockets and shells were falling and everything, but my morale was high,” he recalled.The earthquake was different. “I don’t know what the earthquake did to us exactly. We felt we were going to join God. It was the first time in my life I got scared.”During the war, he had to leave his neighborhood in the eastern sector and rent an apartment on the western side. But the quake has displaced him yet again. As their building shook, he, his wife and four children fled to a nearby garden. Allouch said he won’t return until the building is inspected and repaired. It still stands, but has many cracks. The family will instead stay in a ground-floor storefront nearby that he rented.“It is safer to be down [on the ground floor] if there is an earthquake,” he said, but complained that there is no fuel for heating. “Life is so miserable.”Many others in Aleppo have been displaced more than once.Farouk al-Abdullah fled his farm south of Aleppo city during the war. I’m here today to testify against House Bill 170, 183, and 337,” a young voice said into the microphone.“I really like to play sports with my friends, although honestly I’m not very good at it,” he added. “I’d really like the chance to play.”Dan — a transgender boy whose parents asked that his last name not be used — was the youngest person to testify at the Missouri State House last week in opposition to eight bills heard in the chamber that would restrict trans children from participating in sports that align with their gender identity and limit their access to specialized medical care.He was also part of a delegation of Missouri’s Jewish community members, alongside a few Christian clergy, that has been consistently appearing at the state Capitol to advocate for trans rights in response to a slew of bills that activists say violate their religious freedoms and cause significant harm to the LGBTQ community.Daniel Bogard, the rabbi at Central Reform Congregation in St. Louis and the parent of a trans child, was at the State House on January 24 and again on February 1 to support those testifying against the bills and to lobby lawmakers against them.
