Likud promises peaceful transition of power, again accuses Bennett of fraud-Party continues to claim Yamina leader ‘hijacked votes from the right,’ falsely compares his actions to US electors switching voters’ choice of president-By TOI staff-jun 10,21-Today, 10:05 pm

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party on Thursday issued a clarification of the premier’s claims of “election fraud” in Israel that made international headlines and drew comparisons to former US president Donald Trump. In an English tweet thread retweeted by the premier, the party for the first time said that Netanyahu is committed to a “peaceful transition of power.”However, his office has refused to state whether the prime minister will be attending the traditional handover ceremony of the premiership on Monday, and a transitional briefing with incoming premier Naftali Bennett has not yet been scheduled, with the government swear-in less than three days away.Bennett is set to become prime minister after he reached a coalition deal with opposition leader Yair Lapid of the Yesh Atid party and a wide array of parties aligned against Netanyahu, ranging from the dovish Meretz to the pro-annexation New Hope and the Islamist party Ra’am. Under the agreement, Bennett will serve as prime minister for two years before handing the office to Lapid for the remainder of the term.On Sunday, Netanyahu told a Likud faction meeting, “We are witnesses to the greatest election fraud in the history of the country and in my opinion, the history of democracies.”Those comments and others were picked up by CNN, which published a segment on Wednesday featuring side-by-side footage of Netanyahu and Trump using nearly identical rhetoric to dismiss the validity of election results, to disparage the media, to make claims regarding the existence of a “deep state” and to promise to fight the new government formed to replace them.Likud’s Thursday statement said: “When Prime Minister Netanyahu speaks about ‘election fraud,’ he isn’t referring to the vote-counting process in Israel, in which he has complete confidence.”Israel's Benjamin Netanyahu is on the verge of losing power, and he's not going quietly… loudly denying the legitimacy of his own defeat, as he takes a page out of Donald Trump's playbook. #RollTheTape pic.twitter.com/DAtE3lFeeM — Brianna Keilar (@brikeilarcnn) June 9, 2021-The Likud statement sought to distance Netanyahu from violence such as that exhibited during the January 6 storming of the US capitol.“There is also no question about the peaceful transition of power,” it said. “There always has been a peaceful transfer of power in Israel and there always will be.”However, Likud stood by Netanyahu’s characterization of “election fraud” to describe the formation of the unity government replacing him, saying it accurately depicted Bennett’s breaking of pre-election promises not to form a government with Yesh Atid leader Yair Lapid and the Islamist Ra’am party.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, right, speaks with then-defense minister Yamina party leader Naftali Bennett, March 4, 2020. (Yonatan Sindel/Flash90)-“Bennett hijacked votes from the right and shifted them to the left in direct contradiction to his pledges,” Likud said. “If this isn’t fraud we don’t know what is.”Last year, Netanyahu helped form a government that violated the pre-election promises made by Blue and White chairman Benny Gantz, who had vowed not to sit with Likud chairman.Likud falsely claimed that “Bennett’s actions are akin to US electors unilaterally switching the voters’ choice for president against the will of the electorate.”The American and Israel election systems are very different. Voters do not cast ballots for a prime minister, but for a party, with the Knesset then voting confidence in a prime minister. Parties are in no way obligated to vote for one prime minister over another.Netanyahu’s party has not let up in its attacks on the Yamina chairman and has called on the public to protest against the prospective unity government.

(Yonatan Sindel/ Pool via AP)-In an interview with the right-wing Channel 20 network earlier this week, Netanyahu called Bennett a serial liar.“The deep state is deep within this government,” Netanyahu said of the nascent coalition set to replace him, using a term for a supposed conspiracy of bureaucrats working against the elected leadership, popularized by Trump during his time in office.Netanyahu repeatedly accused Bennett of lying to the public, calling him at one point a “habitual liar.” And he claimed that the incoming government was “more dangerous” than Israel’s 2005 pullout from Gaza, which he said resulted in Hamas rocket attacks, and the Oslo peace accords that gave the Palestinians limited self-rule in the West Bank.

7,000-year-old seal impression marks prehistoric site as early trade hub-A twice-stamped little ancient blob of clay discovered in Tel Tsaf — alongside other evidence — leads researchers to deduce a millennia-old complex mercantile exchange-By Amanda Borschel-Dan-JUN 10,21-Today, 8:45 pm

The ancient Beit She’an Valley village of Tel Tsaf may have been a prehistoric commercial mecca, according to a recent article published in the journal Levant.Alongside mounting evidence of organized large-scale agricultural production, a tiny 7,000-year-old blob of clay with geometric patterns — the earliest impressed sealing discovered in the region — is giving academics new insight into what may have been one of the earliest trade hubs and administration centers in the southern Levant.According to Hebrew University Prof. Yosef Garfinkel, the sealing was used on a grain silo door or a commodities sack or vessel much in the manner of a hair placed on a doorjamb — to catch trespassers.“Even today, an electrical meter is sealed with a plomba [lead seal] to see if somebody has opened it and played with the numbers,” Garfkinkel explained to The Times of Israel on Thursday. “It’s an administrative device still used today — like wax and notaries’ stamps.”The clay sealing was uncovered in a Middle Chalcolithic context (5200–4500 BCE) during excavations conducted by Garfinkel and Ariel University’s Prof. David Ben-Shlomo and Dr. Michael Freikman in 2004–2007.According to their recently published article in Levant, “A stamped sealing from Middle Chalcolithic Tel Tsaf: implications for the rise of administrative practices in the Levant,” the Tel Tsaf sealing is “thus far, the earliest known sealing from the southern Levant dated prior to the 4th millennium BCE, with an actual seal impression.”The authors further propose that, taken alongside previously excavated complex agricultural storage systems, the new sealing may be first evidence of a trade hub, or “administrative control of trade and transportation of goods between local communities in the same area.”According to the researchers, the minuscule partially preserved sealing — the original bulla was at least 10 millimeters long and some 6 millimeters wide — is impressed with at least two different seals. The researchers suggest that the use of multiple seals to impress the bulla could be an indication of a much more sophisticated administration than previously thought and “testified to the presence of representatives of two different communities during the transaction, rather than the management of stored goods within the boundaries of the same settlement.”Clay expert Ben-Shlomo told The Times of Israel that the material used for the small seal came from approximately 10 kilometers away from the site. “Potters often travel several kilometers to take clay from a rich site,” he said. “However, it could indicate that Tel Tsaf is possibly a central site to which neighboring smaller sites brought their wares.”
Ariel University Prof. Shlomo Ben-David during a Zoom interview with The Times of Israel, July 2020. (Screenshot)Some 150 plain partial sealings were discovered at the site alongside the impressed piece. Garfinkel said that a possible next step in the research is to identify the origins of these materials as well.

According to Garfinkel, the site at Tel Tsaf is notable for its well-organized very early silos and immense storage capabilities. He said their capacity was such that there was simply too much grain to have been constructed for a single family’s consumption prior to spoilage and it was therefore a reasonable assumption that they were used in trade.

A small family could consume up to 1.5 tons of grain a year, Garfinkel explained, but at Tel Tsaf, there were multiple silos, each of which could hold up to 30 tons. Though he cautioned that due to erosion and incomplete excavation, the evidence for the village’s size is only partial, he still argued that the amount of storage space in the grain silos vastly outstripped the residents’ consumption needs.Prof. Yosef Garfinkel, Head of the Institute of Archaeology at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, at the Khirbet a-Ra‘i excavation, on July 8, 2019. (Amanda Borschel-Dan/Times of Israel)-This massive amount of grain, alongside a number of previously discovered exotic items from foreign lands, leads Garfinkel to conclude that grain was being traded for items of prestige.“I think they [the Tel Tsaf settlers] exchanged the grain with exotic artifacts which had become status symbols at the time — all the beads, ceramics, exotic items,” he said. They were purely to exhibit wealth, he said. “They were like diamonds, you cannot eat them, cannot do anything with them… If you’re starving, even with 10 tons of gold, you’ll die.”The very early sealing could, therefore, be indicative of a mercantile exchange.“The appearance of the stamped sealing at Tel Tsaf may reflect the emergence of the need to claim ownership of commodities and to ensure authorized access,” write the authors. And in an era prior to the written word, “It has been proposed that the seals bearing geometric motifs were a means of identifying a person, or a group of people, within the society, or of protecting private property,” the authors write in the article.Meet the Flintstones-Settlement at Tel Tsaf, near the Jordan River and the modern state of Jordan, dates to circa 5200-4700 BCE. The site was initially identified in the 1940s during a Beit She’an Valley archaeological survey. The first detailed excavation took place in 1978-1980, when findings from deep probe trenches suggested that there were two occupation periods at the site: the Pottery Neolithic period and the Early Chalcolithic period. Another set of excavations was undertaken by Garfinkel, et al, between 2004 and 2007, uncovering evidence of Middle and Early Late Chalcolithic settlement. University of Haifa Prof. Danny Rosenberg, who was not part of the study, has been excavating at Tel Tsaf since 2013.Just 4 centimeters long and 1 millimeter thick at the tip, the awl discovered at Tel Tsaf was set in a wooden handle. (Prof. Yosef Garfinkel)-Discovery of large-scale food storage suggests that the ancient people had reached an early formative stage in the development of human society. Excavations at Tel Tsaf have also unearthed well-preserved mudbrick architecture and evidence of long-distance trade. In 2014, archaeologists unveiled a 7,000-year-old copper awl, one of the earliest metal object yet found in the Middle East.Rosenberg told The Time of Israel that there is “much evidence that the site was a hub for long-distance trade.”“Tel Tsaf is unique in its accumulation of wealth and the storage and use of early bureaucracy,” said Rosenberg.Rosenberg said that while his overarching interpretations of the site may differ from those of Garfinkel, he too has noted that the site exhibits an accumulation of wealth — mainly grain — and he sees that the Tel Tsaf community was engaged in far-flung trade, including “contacts with communities far away from Egypt, eastern Jordan, northern Levant and even beyond that.”7,200-year-old animal figurine discovered at Tel Tsaf in the Jordan Valley, July 2018. (courtesy)-“Definitely something is going on and we think that Tsaf is the earliest evidence for increasing complexity if you like, maybe a move from the old Chalcolithic, early Chalcolithic way of life into something which later will be much more pronounced in terms of social complexity — social and economic complexity — that we’ll see in the late Chalcolithic, a few hundred years later,” said Rosenberg.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

Iran warships sail through Atlantic, said heading for US-sanctioned Venezuela-Vessels departed in May from Iran’s southern port, says deputy army chief, describing their mission as navy’s longest, most challenging voyage yet-By Isabel Debre and Jon Gambrell-JUN 10,21-Today, 8:20 pm

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — An Iranian destroyer and support vessel are now sailing in the Atlantic Ocean in a rare mission far from the Islamic Republic, Iran’s state TV reported on Thursday, without offering the vessels’ final destination. The trip by the new domestically built destroyer, Sahand, and the intelligence-gathering vessel, Makran, comes amid US media reports, citing anonymous American officials, saying the ships were bound for Venezuela. The Associated Press could not immediately confirm the ships’ destination. The vessels departed last month from Iran’s southern port of Bandar Abbas, said Adm. Habibollah Sayyari, Iran’s deputy army chief. He described their mission as the Iranian navy’s longest and most challenging voyage yet, without elaborating.Iranian state TV released a short clip of the destroyer cruising through the Atlantic’s rough seas. The video was likely shot from the Makran, a converted commercial oil tanker with a mobile launch platform for helicopters.“The Navy is improving its seafaring capacity and proving its long-term durability in unfavorable seas and the Atlantic’s unfavorable weather conditions,” Sayyari said, adding that the warships would not call at any country’s port during the mission.Images from Maxar Technologies, dated April 28, appear to show seven Iranian fast-attack craft typically associated with its paramilitary Revolutionary Guard on the deck of the Makran. Satellite images from Planet Labs Inc. suggest it left a port at Bandar Abbas sometime after April 29. It was not immediately clear where the Makran and the destroyer are now.The website Politico first reported in late May, citing anonymous officials, that the ships’ final destination may be Venezuela. Iran maintains close ties to Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, and has shipped gasoline and other products to the country amid a US sanctions campaign targeting fuel-starved Caracas. Venezuela is believed to have paid Iran, under US sanctions of its own, for the shipments.A top aide to Maduro has denied press reports that the ships will dock there. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive geopolitical issues.During a news conference on May 31, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh declined to say where the Makran was going.“Iran is always present in international waters and it has this right based on international law and it can be present in international waters,” he said. “No country is able to violate this right, and I warn that no one makes miscalculations. Those who sit in glass houses should be careful.”The fast-attack craft aboard the Makran are the type that the Guard used in its tense encounters with US warships in the Persian Gulf and its narrow mouth, the Strait of Hormuz. It was not immediately clear what Venezuela’s plans would be for those ships.“If the boats are delivered, they may form the core of an asymmetrical warfare force within Venezuela’s armed forces,” the US Naval Institute said in an earlier published analysis. “This could be focused on disrupting shipping as a means of countering superior naval forces. Shipping routes to and from the Panama Canal are near the Venezuelan coast.”Earlier this month, fires sank Iran’s largest warship, the 207-meter (679-foot) Kharg, which was used to resupply other ships in the fleet at sea and conduct training exercises. Officials offered no cause for the blaze, which followed a series of mysterious explosions that began in 2019 targeting commercial ships in Mideast waterways. The unusual voyage comes ahead of Iran’s June 18 presidential election, which will see voters select a successor for the relatively moderate President Hassan Rouhani.

After outcry, Omar insists she wasn’t equating US, Israel with terror groups-Progressive congresswoman hits back, after 12 Jewish colleagues label as ‘offensive’ her demand for war crimes accountability in Afghanistan and Gaza-By Jacob Magid-jun 10,21-Today, 10:35 pm

Democratic congresswoman Ilhan Omar on Thursday hit back against criticism from Jewish colleagues who accused her of equating the US and Israel with Hamas and the Taliban.“It’s shameful for colleagues who call me when they need my support to now put out a statement asking for ‘clarification’ and not just call,” Omar tweeted. “The Islamophobic tropes in this statement are offensive. The constant harassment & silencing from the signers of this letter is unbearable.”Her post linked to a statement signed by 12 Jewish Democrats who said Ilhan’s grouping of the US and Israel with the Taliban and Hamas in remarks about pursuing war crimes prosecutions gave “cover to terrorist groups.”In a subsequent statement on Thursday, Omar said: “On Monday, I asked Secretary of State Antony Blinken about ongoing International Criminal Court investigations. To be clear: the conversation was about accountability for specific incidents regarding those ICC cases, not a moral comparison between Hamas and the Taliban and the US and Israel.“I was in no way equating terrorist organizations with democratic countries with well-established judicial systems,” she added. She did not tweet the statement.Rep. @IlhanMN puts out a statement clarifying her remarks earlier this week: "I was in no way equating terrorist organizations with democratic countries with well-established judicial systems. pic.twitter.com/5hlpo8tkdP — Nicholas Wu (@nicholaswu12) June 10, 2021-Omar had posted footage on Monday of her questioning US Secretary of State Antony Blinken at a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing over the Biden administration’s opposition to International Criminal Court investigations in Afghanistan, Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza.“We must have the same level of accountability and justice for all victims of crimes against humanity,” she wrote. “We have seen unthinkable atrocities committed by the US, Hamas, Israel, Afghanistan, and the Taliban,” she wrote in the post that included the HFAC hearing footage. We must have the same level of accountability and justice for all victims of crimes against humanity. We have seen unthinkable atrocities committed by the U.S., Hamas, Israel, Afghanistan, and the Taliban.I asked @SecBlinken where people are supposed to go for justice. pic.twitter.com/tUtxW5cIow — Rep. Ilhan Omar (@Ilhan) June 7, 2021The tweet drew sharp criticism from centrist and rightist pro-Israel groups and Israeli officials, as well as Republicans and conservative media. The matter also became the focus of a Wednesday meeting of the unofficial caucus of 25 Jewish Democrats in the House, which had been convened to discuss the recent uptick in antisemitism, but was steered by Rep. Brad Schneider to focus on Omar.Almost half of the caucus agreed to back a statement calling Omar’s comparison as “offensive as it is misguided… ignoring the differences between democracies governed by the rule of law and contemptible organizations that engage in terrorism at best discredits one’s intended argument and at worst reflects deep-seated prejudice.” It’s shameful for colleagues who call me when they need my support to now put out a statement asking for “clarification” and not just call. The islamophobic tropes in this statement are offensive. Rep. Jamie Raskin of Maryland, a leading progressive, appeared to be hesitant, but did not outright oppose a statement, the sources said. While Omar came under fire from all directions, several progressive Democrats spoke out in her defense.“Pretty sick & tired of the constant vilification, intentional mischaracterization, and public targeting of @IlhanMN coming from our caucus,” tweeted Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. “They have no concept for the danger they put her in by skipping private conversations & leaping to fueling targeted news cycles around her.”“Stop attacking @IlhanMN. Stop attacking us,” tweeted Rep. Cori Bush. “I’m not surprised when Republicans attack Black women for standing up for human rights. But when it’s Democrats, it’s especially hurtful. We’re your colleagues. Talk to us directly. Enough with the anti-Blackness and Islamophobia.”“Stop the bad faith attempts to take @IlhanMN’s words out of context. She called a simple question,” wrote Rep. Ayana Pressley. “The ICC exists to investigate and exact recourse when human rights are violated. Imagine if Congress was as outraged by what Palestinians endure daily.”JTA contributed to this report.

Iran rejects UN report it is stalling on answering queries on nuclear sites-Envoy to International Atomic Energy Agency says that claim is ‘counterproductive’ and ‘deeply disappointing’ to Tehran, warns attitude could become an ‘obstacle’ in negotiations-By AFP-jun 10,21-Today, 9:08 pm

VIENNA, Austria — Iran accused the UN nuclear agency on Thursday of having taken “a counterproductive approach” after its head said Tehran had not clarified queries over possible undeclared nuclear activity.Last week, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) voiced concern in a report to its members that Iran had not clarified the long-outstanding queries. The regular report comes at a delicate time when world powers are meeting to bring the US back to the Iran nuclear deal and Tehran back into compliance with it.The 2015 landmark accord has been hanging by a thread since the US left it in 2018 and re-imposed sanctions, leading Tehran to step up its nuclear activities long curtailed by the deal.Iran Ambassador Kazem Gharib Abadi told the IAEA’s board of governors’ meeting that the latest agency report is “not credible,” calling it “deeply disappointing.”Iran insists that it is cooperating with the IAEA as it seeks clarity on several undeclared Iranian sites where nuclear activity may have taken place, mostly in the early 2000s.“The secretariat has taken a counterproductive approach at the expense of its own credibility,” he said, warning that this “could turn into an obstacle for future goodwill interactions between the two sides.”IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi told reporters on Monday that it was “becoming increasingly difficult” to extend a temporary inspections arrangement with Iran.In February, Tehran suspended some IAEA inspections, leading the agency to negotiate continued, though reduced access. The latest understanding runs out on June 24.A joint statement by France, Germany, and the UK to the board of governors on Wednesday supported the IAEA’s work.“In limiting IAEA access, Iran makes it harder for the international community to assure themselves that Iran’s activities remain exclusively peaceful,” it said. The US also urged Iran in a statement to the board to “fully cooperate.”Negotiators are expected to resume their talks in two downtown Vienna luxury hotels on Saturday to revive the 2015 accord, according to diplomats.Representatives from Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia, and Iran — all party to the deal — have been meeting since early April.Negotiators from the US are also taking part indirectly in the EU-chaired discussions.Diplomats are hoping to conclude the negotiations before Iran’s presidential election on June 18.

Violence erupts at Old City flashpoint as far right’s Ben Gvir holds protest-Controversy-courting lawmaker carries Israeli flag to Damascus Gate after police ban him from marching through Muslim Quarter; at least 5 arrested; Hamas issues warning-By TOI staff-JUN 10,21-Today, 8:36 pm

Clashes broke out Thursday afternoon between East Jerusalem protesters and Israel Police, as far-right lawmaker Itamar Ben Gvir marched to the flashpoint Damascus Gate entrance to the Old City. Ben Gvir waved an Israeli flag at the site, in what he said was a personal protest, after police banned him from parading through the Muslim Quarter to reach the Temple Mount. At least five people were arrested, as hundreds of people were reported to take part in scuffles between Arabs and Ben Gvir’s Jewish supporters. One of those arrested reportedly snatched an Israeli flag from the hands of a Ben Gvir supporter.Police used riot dispersal means, including flashbangs against protesters. There were no immediate reports of injuries.Last month, clashes on the Temple Mount and around the Damascus Gate spiraled into a major confrontation between Israel and terror groups in the Gaza Strip. The fighting ended with a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Gaza’s Hamas rulers. After Ben Gvir’s visit, and amid the rioting that followed, the Hamas military wing issued a statement saying that it was watching the developments closely.“The Al-Qassam Brigades and the leadership of the resistance are closely following the provocative and aggressive actions by the usurpers and their leaders in Jerusalem and the Al-Aqsa Mosque,” the group said in a statement. “They warn against harming Al-Aqsa, and salute her free defenders in Jerusalem for their confrontation and resistance of the desecration of Al-Aqsa and the aggression against it.”Ben Gvir went to the gate after the High Court of Justice earlier rejected his appeal against a decision by police to stop him from marching through the Muslim Quarter. Police were concerned the march could reignite violence in the city and beyond. Ben Gvir had planned to march in protest of the postponement by authorities of a much larger annual flag march through the Old City by nationalist Jewish groups. That march had been scheduled for Thursday, and is now expected to take place on Tuesday — as long as organizers and police can agree on its route.Police seen during clashes with protesters following a visit of right-wing Religious Zionism party lawmaker MK Itamar Ben Gvir at the Damascus Gate of the Old City of Jerusalem, on June 10, 2021. (Yonatan Sindel/Flash90)-Ben Gvir, of the Religious Zionism party, has repeatedly been accused of deliberately stoking unrest.Under heavy security from Border Police, Ben Gvir stood at Damascus Gate and demanded that Police Commissioner Kobi Shabtai resign for “surrendering to terror.”He said he had come to protest the “disgrace” that “a member of the Knesset cannot walk through the Old City” and called the ban against him a “surrender to terror by the police chief, complete subservience.”Having said that he would not confront the police, Ben Gvir nonetheless slammed the force’s decision to prevent him from heading for the Temple Mount.“The very fact that an MK in Israel cannot march in the Old City is a surrender to Hamas and terrorism; it is a victory of terrorism,” Ben Gvir charged. “Of course, we will not give up Jerusalem, we will not give up the Old City. ““These terrorists,” he said as he pointed at Arab protesters who gathered to demonstrate against his visit, “make threats, Israel surrenders, and the person who brought this upon us is the police chief.”“I will not fold. The police chief is a failure and he needs to go. I will remain in Jerusalem,” Ben Gvir said.Far-right Religious Zionism party MK Itamar Ben Gvir visits the Damascus Gate of the Old City of Jerusalem, on June 10, 2021. (Yonatan Sindel/Flash90)-The ban against Ben Gvir, which Channel 12 news said on Wednesday constituted an unprecedented removal of an MK’s immunity rights, was endorsed by Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit.Knesset Speaker Yariv Levin (Likud) on Wednesday night asked Mandelblit to reconsider. The high-level security cabinet on Tuesday evening announced the contentious flag march planned in Jerusalem would be permitted to take place in one week, if police approve the route.Police had initially refused to authorize the event, which was set to follow a path through the Old City’s Damascus Gate entrance and Muslim Quarter, concerned of the potential for the parade to inflame tensions in the city and spark a fresh wave of unrest there, and potentially in other locations. The Hamas terror group had warned of “consequences” if the march passed through Damascus Gate. The original flag march on May 10 was stopped short by rocket fire from Hamas at Jerusalem during the unrest last month, which sparked an 11-day bout of intense fighting. The Temple Mount is the holiest place in Judaism, as the site of the biblical Temples. It is the site of the third-holiest shrine in Islam, the Al-Aqsa Mosque, and has been a frequent flashpoint of violence.Israel captured the Temple Mount and Jerusalem’s Old City in the 1967 Six Day War and extended sovereignty throughout Jerusalem. However, it allowed the Jordanian Waqf to continue to maintain religious authority atop the mount, where Jews are allowed to visit under numerous restrictions, but not to pray.

Hamas honors Al Jazeera for ‘highly professional’ coverage of Gaza conflict-On visit to temporary Gaza bureau of Qatar-funded agency after old office was leveled by IDF, terror group officials present certificate, laud outlet’s ‘high level of nationalism’-By TOI staff-JUN 10,21-Today, 6:27 pm

A Hamas delegation paid a visit to the temporary bureau of Al Jazeera in Gaza Thursday, lauding the Qatari news agency for its coverage of the recent conflict between Israel and terror groups in the coastal enclave. The visit, one of what Hamas said was a series by its officials to honor media outlets for their coverage, featured the presentation to the Al Jazeera team of a certificate marking appreciation for coverage of what Hamas called the “Sword of Jerusalem” battle.Hamas deputy chief in Gaza Khalil al-Hayya told Al Jazeera reporters that they “demonstrated their belonging to the cause of the oppressed Palestinian people,” according to a statement from the group.“What distinguishes the Palestinian journalist [from others] is that he has a national message,” Hayya said. “We saw a high level of nationalism and a national tone in Al Jazeera’s coverage.”The senior Hamas official also lauded the agency’s “high professionalism” and noted the sacrifice of its reporters, whose office was leveled by the IDF on the fifth day of the 11-day conflict. Israel says Hamas had been using several offices in the al-Jaala media tower, including one where operatives were working on technology that could jam the Iron Dome missile defense system. The Associated Press also worked from the building, the destruction of which led to intense international criticism. All occupants were warned by Israel to evacuate ahead of time, and no one was hurt.Hayya also used the opportunity to praise Al Jazeera journalist Givara Budeiri, who was detained by Israeli forces last week while covering protests in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of East Jerusalem, where Palestinian families are under threat of eviction. Police said Budeiri participated in riots at the scene, though he denied the claim.Separately on Wednesday, Al Jazeera announced that it had been targeted in successive hacking attempts over the past several days, adding that it managed to fend them off.Al Jazeera’s websites and platforms experienced “continued electronic attacks aimed at accessing, disrupting and controlling some of the news platforms” from Saturday to Tuesday, the network said in a statement picked up by Reuters.“Al Jazeera’s service provider was able to monitor and fend off all the hacking attacks and prevent them from achieving their goal,” the network added. It claimed that the cyberattacks peaked on Sunday ahead of the premiere of a documentary detailing indirect negotiations taking place between Israel and Hamas, including a voice recording purportedly of an Israeli soldier held prisoner in Gaza, which was widely regarded as fake. The Qatari news agency has long been accused of having an anti-Israeli, anti-American slant in its coverage.

Bad Judeans? Despite biblical ban, non-kosher fish were eaten in ancient Israel-Unlike prohibition on pork, ban on scaleless, finless fish – found twice in the Torah – was apparently not observed. New project looks at origins of Judaism as a religious practice-By Amanda Borschel-Dan-MAY 25,21-Today, 7:00 am

A new study scrutinizing 2,000 years of fish consumption in the ancient holy land has found that — despite clear Torah prohibitions — non-kosher finless and scaleless fish were generally eaten by all peoples, regardless of ethnic and religious affiliation. The requirement to eat only fish that has both fins and scales is found twice in the Bible: in Leviticus 11: 9–12 and in Deuteronomy 14: 9–10. In both cases, the proscription follows the more widely known prohibition against eating pig. Indeed, as one might infer from the Bible, there is scant archaeological evidence of pork consumption among the early Judahites and Israelites. Not so with the “treyf” (non-kosher) fish.In “The Pentateuchal Dietary Proscription against Finless and Scaleless Aquatic Species in Light of Ancient Fish Remains,” published in the peer-reviewed Tel Aviv archaeological journal on Tuesday, co-authors Dr. Yonatan Adler of Ariel University and Prof. Omri Lernau, present evidence from some 56 fishbone assemblages from 30 sites spanning from 1550 BCE to 640 CE, to establish whether common, everyday Judahites actually adhered to this Torah prohibition. In all, some 21,646 skeletal elements were studied, revealing that, at most of the sites there was a preponderance of non-kosher fish, mostly catfish, but also shark, eel, and ray remains, alongside the kosher fish bones.“Catfish were clearly exploited as a suitable source of nutrition for various population groups living in the region over considerable periods,” write the authors. During the Iron Age II, for example, “at over three-quarters of the sites with available evidence, scaleless fish remains are present in modest to moderate amounts: 13% on average (excluding outliers below 5% and above 30%).”And even in the holy, land-locked capital of Jerusalem, non-kosher fish remains were in evidence. “Significantly, all the fish assemblages from sites within the Southern Kingdom — first and foremost Jerusalem — presented evidence of modest to (more often) moderate amounts of scaleless fish remains,” they write.Apparently, not all the Judahites got the memo on the ban on catfish, but that is not surprising to Adler. The current fish study is part of a larger project headed by Adler called the Origins of Judaism Archaeological Project, which looks at both textual sources and archaeological remains for evidence of when the ancient Judeans began keeping the laws of the Torah. The project looks for evidence for purity laws, such as ancient ritual baths and stone vessels, as well as other biblical commandments, which could be represented by ancient tefillin (phylacteries), mezuzot, or the existence of figurative art (which may defy the second commandment). This new study focuses on evidence for the kosher dietary laws, which is also explored in the project.“What I’m interested in is the question of, from which point in time do we have evidence that ancient Judeans were aware of the Torah and saw the Torah as something authoritative, which they should be keeping,” Adler told The Times of Israel.Modern scholars believe the first five books of the Bible, or the Torah, was written or compiled in the Persian period — from 539 to 332 BCE. According to Adler, the fact that a select elite redacted the Bible does not at all mean that the contents were known to the common Judahite.“There’s a very important distinction that I’d like to make between when a book is written down, edited, and put together, and when the general public knows of its existence and regards that book as authoritative,” said Adler.A project is hatched-The fish study was spawned after Adler heard a 2017 lecture by co-author Lernau, a retired MD whose hobby — shared by his father — of studying ancient fish bones made him the foremost expert in Israel.During the lecture, Lernau happened to mention the existence of evidence of catfish in ancient Jerusalem and Adler’s ear perked up. Lernau has a huge database documenting fish remains from throughout the country, which allowed the study to work on a large scale, despite a relative paucity of systematically collected fishbone samples. (Indeed, the authors call on their fellow archaeologists to take more care, and to dry- and wet-sift for fish bones, at any site, when possible.)“We took a particular snapshot — a snapshot of 2,000 years — but a window from 1550 BCE until 640 CE, within which this period of time, we can say for sure the Pentateuch came about and Judaism was born,” said Adler. Through this long prism, the authors discovered that non-kosher fish were a regular part of people’s diets, including species that were imported from far-away Egypt and elsewhere. The authors compared the proliferation of non-kosher fish remains with the absence of pig evidence during the same eras and concluded that the two biblical prohibitions come from starkly different backgrounds.“There have been some very important studies in recent years, which showed that pig was not being eaten by all ethnic groups in the ancient Levant. Already in the Bronze Age,” there are “many sites where we don’t find pig remains and a limited number of sites where we do find pig remains,” said Adler.Adler cautions that the absence of a certain kind of food does not necessarily mean abstention nor necessarily imply a taboo, however. But what is clear, he said, is that “when the pentateuchal laws are written down and compiled and the prohibition against pig was being written down, if you will, pig was not being eaten by Judeans. And that had been the case for quite some time. Their Canaanite ancestors had not been eating pig for hundreds of years. And the pentateuchal prohibition against pig was written on that backdrop,” he said.“That was not the case with the fish. Scaleless fish was being eaten by Judeans for hundreds of years and, when the pentateuchal laws came to be written down, they contradicted long-standing Judean dietary behaviors,” he said.To date the genesis of the non-kosher fish ban is still unknown. Adler said he is unaware of any other contemporary culture that prohibited these scaleless, finless fish. But it appears that the fish prohibition “had a very different background from the pig prohibition, despite the fact that the fish prohibition appears immediately after the pig prohibition in both places that it appears in Leviticus and Deuteronomy.”Birth of a religion-Ariel University’s Dr. Yonatan Adler in the field. (courtesy)-In Adler’s upcoming 2022 book from Yale University Press on the Origins of Judaism, he will discuss more fully when the religion as a practice was born. Spoiler: It’s centuries later than when the Torah was redacted.“We don’t have evidence for any of these [Torah] practices or prohibitions prior to the second century before the common era, that is to say from the period of the Hasmonean Dynasty,” said Adler. “We do not have any evidence that the Judean masses, that your regular every day Judean you would have met on the street of Jerusalem, prior to the middle of the second century BCE had any knowledge of the Torah and or that he observed the rules of the Torah.”Adler is the first to emphasize the archaeology maxim that the absence of evidence is not the evidence of absence.“Judaism could have begun before the mid-2nd century,” he said, but the lack of evidence currently makes that conjecture. “It could have emerged during the long Hellenistic period — sometime during this time is the best time to be seeking the emergence of Judaism.”

Hundreds of Dutch academics sign call to cut ties with Israel over Gaza fighting-564 people put their names to letter urging their government to boycott Israeli academic institutions; one signatory works at state Holocaust research institute-By JTA and TOI staff-MAY 25,21-Today, 7:57 am

Hundreds of academics have signed a petition calling on the Dutch government to sever relations with Israel over what they perceive as Israeli violations of international law in responding to Hamas terror group rockets from the Gaza Strip.Among the 564 signers is a researcher at a state Holocaust research institute.“We declare we join the calls of our Palestinian colleagues to boycott Israeli academic institutions,” reads the petition, which is titled “Netherlands higher education stands in solidarity with Palestinians.” The document also calls on the Dutch government to “sever all economic, political and military ties with Israel.”The document says Israel violated international law in its response to the thousands of rockets launched into its cities this month by Hamas. Israel struck back at Hamas in Gaza with intensive airstrikes.Kylie Thomas, a South Africa native, was the only one from the Netherlands Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies, or NIOD, who signed the petition. Its director, Frank van Vree, said Thomas’s views do not represent the institution, “which as a research institute does not take a position on this action,” he wrote to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency. NIOD has no intention of limiting its cooperation with any of its current partners, he added. The Hamas-run Health Ministry in Gaza says at least 243 Palestinians were killed, including 66 children and teens, with 1,910 people wounded. It does not differentiate between terror group members and civilians. The Israeli military maintained that it killed some 225 terrorist operatives and that the Palestinian death toll was in fact considerably higher than was reported. It said some of the civilian fatalities were caused by Hamas rockets falling short and landing in the Strip.Thirteen people were killed in Israel, all but one of them civilians, including a 5-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl.A ceasefire was reached early Friday following 11 days of fighting.

Iran’s constitutional watchdog approves just 7 out of 590 to run for president-Top-level panel of clerics and jurists disqualifies vast majority of would-be candidates who registered for coming election to succeed Hassan Rouhani-By AP-MAY 25,21-Today, 10:52 am

TEHRAN, Iran — Iranian state television announced Tuesday that only seven candidates have been approved by the country’s constitutional watchdog to run for president next month, drastically narrowing the field of hopefuls for who will replace outgoing President Hassan Rouhani. The report did not name those selected, though rumors have circulated that reformists and moderates vying for the spot may have been barred from running by the Guardian Council.State TV quoted Abbas Ali Kadkhodaei, the spokesman of the Guardian Council, as saying “only seven” had been approved out of some 590 who registered by the panel of clerics and jurists overseen by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Kadkhodaei did not name those selected.Iran’s Interior Ministry, which oversees its police and elections, typically announces the candidates. In 2017, 1,630 hopefuls registered to run.Iran’s judiciary chief Ebrahim Raisi, a hardline cleric who ran against Rouhani in 2017, is considered among analysts to be the strongest candidate in the upcoming June 18 vote. Many in Iran have grown frustrated with Rouhani, whose signature achievement was the 2015 nuclear deal that’s now in tatters after then-US president Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew America from the accord.

Hundreds rally against antisemitism in Jewish suburb of Chicago-Skokie sees 500-strong group demonstrate after synagogue vandalized a week ago; local rabbi says ‘this is not a protest, but a cry of pain’By Yvette Alt Miller-24 May 2021, 9:04 pm

SKOKIE, Illinois (JTA) — After a synagogue in this Chicago suburb was vandalized on May 16 in what police are calling a hate crime, local rabbis could not dwell on the damage: they had to prepare for Shavuot, the two-day Jewish holiday that began that evening.A week later, though, the rabbis were the engine behind a 500-person rally in this heavily Jewish town against antisemitism.Skokie perhaps is best known as the town where, in 1977, free-speech advocates fought for neo-Nazis to be able to march, only to have the eventual rally be outnumbered by local Jews and their allies. This time, too, Chicago-area Jews were joined by allies from other communities on Sunday, one week after pro-Palestinian protesters vandalized Skokie’s Persian Hebrew Congregation and left local Jews rattled and fearful for their safety.“This is not a protest,” Rabbi Zvi Engel of Congregation Or Torah told the crowd gathered next to his synagogue on one of the town’s main thoroughfares. “This is a cry of pain.”The rally was a message that Chicago-area Jews will not accept recent anti-Jewish vitriol and the vandalism of a local synagogue in silence. It was one of several public gatherings held in recent days by Jewish communities and pro-Israel groups in many cities in response to sweeping pro-Palestinian rallies and incidents of antisemitism during the Israel-Gaza conflict.Synagogues of all Jewish denominations in Skokie served as co-sponsors of the rally along with several other Jewish organizations, including the Simon Wiesenthal Center, a Los Angeles-based group that advocates against antisemitism.Alison Pure-Slovin, director of the center’s Midwest region, said she had heard from an unusual number of non-Jews asking to be included in advocacy against antisemitism.“People have been reaching out to me for the past few weeks saying what can we do to support the Jewish people?’” Pure-Slovin said, but adding that the number remained disappointingly small.“We as Jews march against hate — why don’t others reach out to us?” she wondered. Two non-Jewish organizations officially partnered with the rally: the Iraqi Christian Relief Council and the Joint Civic Committee of Italian Americans, whose members added Italian flags alongside the American and Israeli ones on display.“We want to represent the Italian-American community,” Frank Di Paolo said. “We’ve also been discriminated against.”Others joined to demonstrate solidarity with the local Jewish community.“It’s important to stand against hate and antisemitism,” said Josina Morita, commissioner of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago and a Skokie resident who brought her 1-year-old daughter, Mei Mei, to the rally.Others called attention to who was not there.Patrick John, the first Black Christian president of the Decalogue Society of Lawyers, a Jewish legal society in Chicago, in a speech criticized the Black Lives Matter movement for taking up the cause of Palestinian rights uncritically. John lamented that there were not more African-Americans at the rally supporting their Jewish neighbors.Chicago’s Jewish federation, the Jewish United Fund, was not among the rally organizers, leaving that work to local Jewish leaders. The federation had worked with local authorities to ensure that last week’s vandalism was treated as a hate crime, according to its president, Lonnie Nasatir.“Right now, we’re encouraged by different parts of the community,” Nasatir said. The federation’s approach drew support from some of the rally participants.“I think the response [to antisemitism] should always be a grassroots response,” said Rabbi Leonard Matanky of Congregation KINS in Chicago, a rally sponsor. The Skokie rally’s organizers hope that their grassroots activism can serve as a model for other communities at a time of fear and uncertainty.“We’re stronger together,” said Rabbi Ari Hart of Skokie Valley Agudas Jacob, an Orthodox synagogue and another rally organizer.Hart said the rally’s organizers — who ultimately included Reform, Conservative and Orthodox Jews — put aside any differences and came together to fight hate.“Part of what ‘achdus’ means is you have to be flexible and inclusive,” Hart said, using the Hebrew word for Jewish unity.Or Torah’s Rabbi Engel suggested that other communities organize across denominations.“Those who wish us ill couldn’t care less what siddur [Jewish prayer book] you pray from,” he said. “They know we all have the same Torah, the same State of Israel, and that we are all from the same family.“In times like these, we must stand together to give each other strength and to raise consciousness.”

WhatsApp blocks accounts of Gaza-based journalists in Hamas chat-Accounts of 17 correspondents in the coastal enclave disabled, only 4 have been restored; media giant says it bans users ‘to prevent harm as well as applicable law’By AP and TOI staff    25 May 2021, 1:18 am

A few hours after the latest ceasefire took effect in the Gaza Strip on Friday, a number of Palestinian journalists in the coastal enclave found they were blocked from accessing WhatsApp messenger. The Associated Press reached out to 17 journalists in Gaza who confirmed their Whatsapp accounts had been blocked. By midday Monday, only four journalists — working for Al Jazeera — confirmed their accounts had been restored. The incident marks the latest puzzling move concerning WhatsApp’s owner Facebook Inc. that’s left Palestinian users or their allies bewildered as to why they’ve been targeted by the company, or if indeed they’d been singled out for censorship at all.Twelve of the 17 journalists contacted by the AP said they had been part of a WhatsApp group that disseminates information related to Hamas operations. Hamas, which rules over the Gaza Strip, is viewed as a terrorist organization by Israel and the United States, where WhatsApp owner Facebook is headquartered. It remained unclear if the journalists were targeted because they’d been following that group’s announcements on WhatsApp.Members of the Izz-Al Din Al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of the Hamas terror group, march in Gaza City on May 22, 2021. (Emmanuel Dunand/AFP)-The Hamas-run Health Ministry in Gaza has a WhatsApp group followed by more than 80 people, many of them journalists. That group, for example, has not been blocked.Hassan Slaieh, a freelance journalist in Gaza whose WhatsApp account is blocked, said he thinks his account might have been targeted because he was on a group called Hamas Media.“This has affected my work and my income because I lost conversations with sources and people,” Slaieh said.Al Jazeera’s chief correspondent in Gaza, Wael al-Dahdouh, said his access to WhatsApp was blocked around dawn on Friday before it was reinstated Monday. He said journalists subscribe to Hamas groups only to get information needed to do journalistic work.A WhatsApp spokesperson said the company bans accounts to comply with its policies “to prevent harm as well as applicable law.” The company said it has been in touch with media outlets over the last week about its practices. “We will reinstate journalists if any were impacted,” the company said.Al Jazeera said that when it sought information regarding its four journalists in Gaza impacted by the blockage, they were told by Facebook that the company had blocked the numbers of groups based out of Gaza and consequently the cell phone numbers of Al Jazeera journalists were part of the groups they had blocked.Among those affected by the WhatsApp blockage are two Agence France-Presse journalists. The Paris-based international news service told the AP it is working with WhatsApp to understand what the problem is and to restore their accounts. The 11-day war caused widespread destruction across Gaza with 253 Palestinians, including 66 minors killed in the fighting, according to the Hamas Health Ministry. It did not differentiate between terror group members and civilians. The Israeli army said some of the Gaza casualties were caused by the terror groups’ rockets falling short and landing inside Gaza. One soldier and 12 civilians in Israel, including a 5-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl, were killed in the terror groups’ rocket fire, and hundreds were injured. It’s not the first time journalists have been suddenly barred from WhatsApp. In 2019, a number of journalists in Gaza had their accounts blocked without explanation. The accounts of those working with international media organizations were restored after contacting the company.Facebook and its photo and video-sharing platform Instagram were criticized this month for allegedly removing posts and deleting accounts by users posting about protests against efforts to evict Palestinians from their homes in east Jerusalem’s Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood. It prompted an open letter signed by 30 organizations demanding to know why the posts had been removed.WhatsApp said it does not have access to the contents of people’s personal chats, but that they ban accounts when information is reported they believe indicates a user may be involved in causing imminent harm. The company said it also responds to “valid legal requests from law enforcement for the limited information available to us.”The Arab Center for the Advancement of Social Media, or 7amleh, said in a report published this month that Facebook accepted 81% of requests made by Israel’s Cyber Unit to remove Palestinian content last year. It found that in 2020, Twitter suspended dozens of accounts of Palestinian users based on information from the Israeli Ministry of Strategic Affairs.Al-Dahdouh, the Al Jazeera correspondent, said although his account was restored, his past history of chats and messages was erased.“The groups and conversations were back, but content is erased, as if you are joining a new group or starting a new conversation,” he said. “I have lost information, images, numbers, messages, and communications.”Al Jazeera said its journalists in Gaza had their WhatsApp accounts blocked by the host without prior notification.“Al Jazeera would like to strongly emphasize that its journalists will continue to use their WhatsApp accounts and other applications for newsgathering purposes and personal communication,” the news network told the AP. “At no time, have Al Jazeera journalists used their accounts for any means other than for personal or professional use.”The Qatar-based news network’s office in Gaza was destroyed during the war by Israeli airstrikes that took down the high-rise residential and office tower, which also housed The Associated Press offices. The military, which has said it gave journalists and other tenants “sufficient time” to evacuate, alleges the Hamas terror group used the building for a military intelligence office and weapons development.Sada Social, a West Bank-based center tracking alleged violations against Palestinian content on social media, said it was collecting information on the number of Gaza-based journalists impacted by the latest WhatsApp decision.

As pandemic wanes, Israel’s indoor mask mandate said set to be lifted in 2 weeks-But Health Ministry official says she won’t commit to timeframe; travel restrictions needed to prevent entry of new variants-By TOI staff-25 May 2021, 12:19 am

Health Ministry officials reportedly said Monday that the requirement to wear face masks indoors may be lifted within two weeks if the trend of declining contagion continues despite pandemic restrictions being steadily eased.Responding to the report by Channel 12 news, Dr. Sharon Alroy-Preis, the Health Ministry’s chief of public health, told the network she would not give a specific timeframe, but “we are taking action and checking” the possibility.Israel has all but emerged from the pandemic, with most businesses and schools back to normal and the government announcing the imminent reopening of movie theaters and arts venues following the country’s world-leading vaccination drive over the past few months.Health officials are still keeping in place restrictions on incoming travelers, and are planning on tightening those restrictions to prevent the entry of potential vaccine-resistant variants.“It’s still important to ensure that contagion does not arrive from outside,” Alroy-Preis said, reiterating a Health Ministry statement from a day earlier.“On that front, not only will the restrictions remain, but they will be increased. We haven’t yet identified a variant that’s resilient to the vaccine,” she said. “We’re conducting many tests to prevent the entry of any such variant.”All incoming travelers must still quarantine for about two weeks, and must receive a COVID test on their ninth day in the country, she said.On Sunday, Health Minister Yuli Edelstein said that almost all remaining virus restrictions will be lifted in the beginning of next month.A Health Ministry statement said that from June 1, Israel will lift the remaining coronavirus restrictions on gatherings, and will no longer limit entry to certain venues only to the vaccinated, following the near-vanquishing of COVID-19 in the country as a result of its successful vaccine drive. The so-called Purple Badge and Green Pass systems will be scrapped, meaning that Israelis will no longer require proof of vaccination or recovery to enter various venues, and capacity limits at stores, restaurants and other sites will be lifted. There will be no further caps on gatherings, indoors or outdoors.Only the wearing of face masks indoors and travel restrictions will remain in place for the time being, Edelstein said.Earlier this month, the Health Ministry announced that it was extending the Green Pass system through 2021, and attributed the decision to Edelstein himself.Additionally, members of the Health Ministry’s national forum for dealing with the coronavirus outbreak said Monday that no discussions had been held with experts ahead of the announcement. According to the Kan public broadcaster, one unnamed member of the forum expressed great surprise at the decision and raised questions as to the motives behind it.Others told the outlet that they had only heard about the decision from news reports and suspected there were political motives behind the move. However, Deputy Health Minister Yoav Kisch told Kan on Monday that there was nothing untoward about the development, and said that the Health Ministry’s leadership had decided to take the step.Edelstein said Sunday that the return to normal comes with a caveat. The Health Ministry is working to continue the low morbidity and will continue to comprehensively observe the situation to prevent an outbreak. Of course, if there is an outbreak, we will have to go back” to upholding the restrictions, he said.Edelstein urged Israelis not to travel to countries with high morbidity rates, and to stick to distancing rules when abroad.Israel has made dramatic gains in stamping out the virus through its vaccination campaign, driving down the number of daily cases (based on a weekly average), from 8,600 at the peak of the health crisis to just 27 this week. At the height of the pandemic, there were 88,000 active cases in the country and 1,228 serious cases; as of Monday evening, there were 514 active infections and 59 people in serious condition.According to the ministry, over 5.1 million Israelis received both doses of the vaccine and 92% of Israelis over 50 are fully vaccinated. The morbidity rates in the country have remained low despite the reopening of most of the economy and of the school system.

As ceasefire holds, Israel reopens Gaza crossings for humanitarian aid-Hamas said to threaten renewed fighting over any change to ‘status quo,’ reject proposed condition of releasing captives in exchange for Strip’s reconstruction-By Emanuel Fabian and Aaron Boxerman-MAY 24,21-Today, 11:46 pm

Israel decided to reopen its crossings with Gaza on Tuesday to allow fuel and humanitarian aid to enter the coastal enclave for the first time in more than two weeks, Israel’s liaison to the Palestinians said on Monday night. All crossings between Israel and the Gaza Strip were completely shut down two weeks ago, when the Hamas terror group launched rockets at Jerusalem and initiated 11 days of fighting.Sporadic exemptions for foreign journalists and some aid convoys were granted since hostilities ceased on Friday morning. Starting Tuesday morning, however, Erez Crossing will open for humanitarian cases — such as Gazans seeking medical treatment in Israel — and for foreign journalists and aid workers. The Kerem Shalom commercial crossing will reopen for fuel and humanitarian aid, the office acting as liaison to the Palestinians, commonly known by its acronym COGAT, said in a statement. The Israeli government also authorized reopening the Gaza fishing zone to its usual six miles. Fishing is a significant source of revenue for the beleaguered enclave, and Israel has raised and lowered the limit several times in recent years in a bid to pressure Hamas.“These civilian measures, approved by the political echelon, are conditional upon the preservation of security stability,” COGAT said.Leaders of Hamas, meanwhile, have reportedly rejected conditions that Israel is seeking to impose on Gaza’s reconstruction, including a proposal to limit the entry of goods into the coastal enclave.Defense Minister Benny Gantz on Sunday said Israel will not permit the full reconstruction of Gaza, as well as the entry of aid that is not humanitarian, until the terror group releases two Israeli civilians who crossed into the Strip, and returns the bodies of two soldiers.Hamas “cannot be blackmailed,” the Lebanese Al-Akhbar newspaper quoted officials in the terror group as saying on Monday in response to Gantz’s proposal. The two Israelis — Avraham Avera Mengistu and Hisham a-Sayed — entered the Gaza Strip of their own accord, and their families say they suffered from mental illness. Hamas is also holding the bodies of Oren Shaul and Hadar Goldin, two IDF soldiers who were killed in the Strip during the 2014 Gaza war.“The most desirable change in my view is to strengthen the Palestinian Authority as much as possible,” Gantz told reporters on Sunday, “and not to let Hamas be the one that sets the agenda, not in the area of the Gaza Strip or in Gaza itself.”Hamas officials have also threatened to resume rocket attacks if Israel seeks to impose a new status quo on Gaza following the 11 days of fighting, after some officials called for a harsher response, including the renewal of assassinations of Hamas leaders.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday vowed that Hamas would see a much tougher Israeli stance, and that any future rocket fire from Gaza would be met with “a whole new level of force.”“We changed the equation not only with regard to the operation but also with regard to the future. If Hamas thinks we will tolerate a ‘drizzle’ of rockets, it is mistaken,” Netanyahu said, referring to the sporadic fire often seen from Gaza between major conflicts in recent years. Also Monday, Gantz ordered the confiscation of shipments of materials and equipment to Gaza that the military claims are intended for Hamas’ military efforts. In the days that preceded the latest round of fighting that began May 10, inspectors at the Kerem Shalom crossing nabbed shipments of potassium chloride, glycerin, polyurethane, fiberglass, and other materials, as well as sophisticated communications equipment, the Defense Ministry said in a statement.Gantz also ordered the confiscation of an estimated NIS 1 million ($310,000) worth of gold that the Israel Defense Forces caught being smuggled from Gaza to the West Bank, which officials said was intended to fund Hamas terror operations in the West Bank.Meanwhile, in Gaza on Monday, a spokesman for Hamas’s armed wing told a crowd of supporters that Hamas will respond to any Israeli escalation in kind. “Our actions precede our words and our missiles are in their silos ready and awaiting the decision,” a spokesperson for the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades said. The spokesperson delivered the remarks at an event mourning terrorists who were killed during the recent hostilities with Israel, attended by the group’s Gaza leader, Yahya Sinwar.“We say to the occupation with consistency and clarity: if you return, so shall we. If you escalate, so shall we. Our fingers are on the trigger, and our battle has chapters still unwritten,” the spokesperson said.

As Blinken due, Netanyahu hints Israel may take independent action against Iran-In unusually stark remarks, PM says he appreciates US friendship, but there could be a situation where Tehran’s nuclear threat necessitates ‘brave and independent decisions’-By TOI staff and Agencies-MAY 24,21-Today, 10:49 pm

On the eve of US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s first visit to Israel and neighboring countries, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made unusually tough remarks regarding Iran, including hinting that Jerusalem could take military action against the Islamic Republic’s nuclear sites without Washington’s okay.In a ceremony marking the appointment of incoming Mossad chief David Barnea, and with many Mossad members in attendance, Netanyahu said: “The first task of each one of you is to prevent Iran from arming itself with nuclear weapons.”“I very much appreciate our friend the United States, which has been standing by our side for many years. That’s an integral part of our national security,” Netanyahu continued.“But there could be a situation in which our highest goal — to guarantee that the ayatollahs don’t end the thousands of years of existence of the Jewish people — will require us to take brave and independent decisions,” the premier said.“In any event — with or without a deal — we will do everything to deny Iran nuclear weapons, because this concerns our very existence.”Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, center, outgoing Mossad director Yossi Cohen, right, and incoming director David Barnea at a ceremony conferring the Prime Minister’s Award on exception Mossad agents, May 24, 2021. (Amos Ben Gershom/GPO)-Global powers have been meeting in Vienna since early April in a bid to bring Washington back to the 2015 nuclear deal with Tehran, which the US left in 2018.The withdrawal under then-US president Donald Trump and the reimposition of sanctions has led Iran to step up its nuclear activities.Iran’s parliament speaker said Sunday that international inspectors may no longer access surveillance images of the Islamic Republic’s nuclear sites, escalating tensions.Over a year ago, a US drone strike killed a top Iranian general, prompting Tehran to later launch ballistic missiles that wounded dozens of American troops in Iraq.A mysterious explosion also struck Iran’s Natanz nuclear facility, which Iran has described as sabotage and blamed on Israel. In November, Iranian scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, who founded the country’s military nuclear program some two decades earlier, was killed in an attack Tehran also blame.Blinken was heading to Israel Monday for his first trip to the region as US secretary of state, days after Washington helped broker a ceasefire that brought an end to the most significant escalation of violence between Israel and Hamas in seven years. The goals of the three-day trip — which will also include stops in Ramallah, Cairo and Amman — will be to ensure that the ceasefire between Israel and Gaza terror groups holds while also pushing steps that will improve the quality of life for both sides in the absence of immediate peace talks to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, a senior State Department official told reporters in a phone briefing ahead of Blinken’s takeoff. The secretary will also work with the parties to help kickstart efforts to rehabilitate Gaza, while preventing international aid from reaching the enclave’s ruling Hamas terror group, the official added. In Israel, Blinken will meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Reuven Rivlin, Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi, and other senior Israeli officials, discussing the Biden administration’s “ironclad commitment to Israel’s security,” the White House said in a statement.Jacob Magid contributed to this report.

Syria blames Israel for mysterious attacks on oil tankers-Without providing evidence for Jerusalem’s involvement, foreign minister threatens ‘these attacks cannot continue with Israel not paying a price’By Agencies and TOI staff-may 25,21-Today, 9:14 pm

Syria’s foreign minister has blamed Israel for mysterious attacks over more than a year targeting oil tankers heading from Iran to Syria, claiming they violate international law and will not go unpunished.Faisal Mekdad told Lebanon-based Al-Mayadeen TV in an interview aired late Sunday that oil tankers coming to Syria now move under Russian protection. He did not provide any evidence for Israel being behind the attacks. There was no immediate comment from Israeli authorities on the matter.Israel has clamped down on alleged Iranian entrenchment in Syria, and has taken action to prevent Iranian missiles and their components from reaching Lebanon’s Hezbollah terror group, which is supported by Tehran and Damascus.Syria’s oil resources are mostly outside of government-controlled areas, but two of its refineries are operating. This makes Syria reliant on Iran for fuel.US Treasury sanctions have targeted a network that spans Syria, Iran and Russia responsible for shipping oil to the Syrian government, as the country has been going through a civil war for more than a decade. For more than a year, vessels carrying oil to Syria, as well as some oil facilities in government-held parts of the war-torn country, have been subjected to mysterious attacks.Vessels carrying oil to Syria travel from the gulf to the Red Sea to the Mediterranean via the Suez Canal.“There should be deterrence to Israeli attacks on ships,” Mekdad said, without going into details. “The Israeli government and arrogant Israeli leaders must understand that these attacks cannot continue with Israel not paying a price.”Last month, Syria’s oil ministry said a fire erupted in a tanker on its coast after what it said was a suspected drone attack. Also in April, an attack targeted an Iranian cargo ship that is said to serve as a floating base for Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard forces off the coast of Yemen.A shadow war in Mideast waters emerged in 2019, when the US Navy blamed a series of blasts in June that year in the Gulf of Oman off the coast of the United Arab Emirates on Iran.

Critical threshold' in Grey-Bruce with 70+ COVID cases in 36 hours-Author of the article:Greg Cowan-Publishing date:Apr 14, 2021

The Grey Bruce Health Unit is pleading with residents of Grey-Bruce to stay home after reporting 73 new COVID-19 cases Wednesday involving hundreds of high-risk close contacts.Dr. Ian Arra, Grey-Bruce’s medical officer of health, said everyone in the region should act as if they have COVID-19 or are a close contact and stay home unless for an essential purpose.“If the public helps us right now there’s a chance, I don’t know if it’s a good chance, but a chance we can build capacity to contain this and hopefully turn the ship around,” Arra said. “If we don’t do this, really it’s over but for the shouting. The spread of the virus will be uncontrolled.”Arra said the health unit needs at least a 48-hour buffer period to complete the contact tracing with such a large number of new cases reported in the past 36 hours.Health unit staff are being reassigned to help manage the contact tracing effort, and a planned vaccination clinic Saturday has been cancelled as a result. Vaccination clinics planned for next week may be cancelled or rescheduled as well.“We need to take drastic measures,” Arra said. “As soon as you abandon contact tracing it spirals out of control. There’s no way to stop it.”Arra said most of the cases are a direct result of people gathering and partying, including recent high-school bush parties. He said it’s being worsened by people lying or omitting details when contacted by the health unit, and by people not isolating as ordered. The health unit is preparing to issue a class action order to further reinforce the need for confirmed cases to isolate and for close contacts to follow health unit direction.Previously, the health unit has written individual orders for people with confirmed cases who did not comply with the health unit’s direction. Arra said days are wasted in that scenario and any chance at early intervention whittle away. Now, the order will cover all confirmed cases the first day they’re identified. The fine is up to $5,000 per day if convicted. The health unit’s situation report listed 25 new confirmed cases reported as of 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, but a note above the report said 48 additional cases have been added. Arra said those cases were confirmed in the following 12 hours, and more cases are expected to be reported Thursday.Of the 25 first reported, 11 were found in Owen Sound, three in The Blue Mountains, two in Grey Highlands, two in Hanover, two in Meaford, and single cases in Arran-Elderslie, Brockton, Huron-Kinloss, South Bruce Peninsula and West Grey.According to the report, there are now 111 active cases in the region including 25 involving variants of concern, though it seems the report of active cases may not include the 48 additional cases. One case being followed by the health unit is in hospital locally, and three are hospitalized outside Grey-Bruce.The health unit added another death to the local total Thursday as well and explained the person acquired COVID-19 in Grey-Bruce but passed away outside of the region. Five people in total have died with COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic and are listed on the health unit’s report.Notre Dame and Queen of Hearts nursery school in Owen Sound are the only facilities under a declared COVID-19 outbreak. The outbreak at Notre Dame was declared Monday. Three students have tested positive. The health unit said it has administered 8,352 COVID-19 vaccines in the past seven days for a total of 41,076 vaccines now administered in total. The health unit has received 6,380 doses for the Week of April 12.Public health units throughout Ontario reported 4,156 new COVID-19 cases Wednesday as more patients were admitted into intensive care units.Another 28 deaths were added to the provincial total.According to the province’s report, 642 COVID-19 patients are in the ICU, the highest number since the beginning of the pandemic. Of those, 442 have been put on a ventilator. The seven-day average of new daily cases in Ontario was 4,002 Wednesday, another pandemic high.In the latest 24-hour reporting period, labs processed 54,211 tests producing a positivity rate of 8.6 per cent.Meanwhile, 112,000 COVID-19 vaccines were administered Tuesday according to provincial figures.Health Canada said Wednesday a new and extremely rare blood clotting syndrome may be linked to Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine but the benefits of the vaccine far outweigh the risks. That decision came a day after Canada reported its first case of a blood clot in a patient who received the AstraZeneca vaccine in Quebec.Health Canada says there is no evidence showing certain people are more at risk than others and the vaccine will remain authorized for all adults in Canada. The National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) is reviewing this information and will decide if it needs to change its recommendation that the vaccine not be used on anyone under the age of 55.

Bible quiz gets it audience back after 2020’s COVID-restricted version-17-year-old Gilad Avrahamoff from Netanya takes top spot in Jerusalem’s traditional Independence Day competition; teen from US, competing via video link, comes in 3rd-By TOI staff-APR 15,21-Today, 5:12 pm

Israeli teenager Gilad Avrahamoff won Thursday’s International Bible Quiz for Youth, which is held every year on Independence Day.Avrahamoff, 17, from the northern city of Netanya, and a student of the city’s Bnei Akiva Yeshiva, took first prize in the annual competition in Jerusalem.Unlike last year, the competition was held before an audience, after coronavirus restrictions were significantly relaxed. Participants from outside Israel took part via video link, as they did last year. The spelling bee-like contest has teenage contestants answer trivia questions about minute details from the most obscure biblical books. Contestants must locate or complete fragments of biblical verses, identify who said which quotation to whom, or name geographical details of the ancient Land of Israel.“The questions this year were challenging and I was very excited, and stressed, especially toward the head-to-head stage,” Avrahamoff told the Walla news site.“I recommend for anyone who wants to participate next year to start studying from now, take advantage of your free time for studying, on the bus, on the way to school, in any place,” he added.Dvir Barhad, a student at the Kiryat Ata Yeshiva, took second place in the competition, organized by the Education Ministry, Israel Defense Forces, Jewish Agency and Jewish National Fund. Benjamin Ram from the US came in third, and fourth place went to Amit Algazar from Ashdod.Sixteen teens from eight different countries competed against each other in the televised final rounds.Jewish Agency head Isaac Herzog, addressing the contestants, praised the competition that his mother Aura Herzog founded in 1958 for bringing together Jews from all around the world.“I am proud to be a part of the Bible quiz tradition, conceived by my mother… during the 10th anniversary of the State of Israel, to strengthen the all-important connection between the people of Israel and the Jewish nation in all corners of the globe,” Herzog said. Also in attendance, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that “the Bible is an outstanding compass for leadership. It is a wonderful guide that teaches us where we came from and where we strive to reach — high and far.”Netanyahu’s son Avner won the Bible quiz in 2010.

Missing link’ in alphabet’s history said unearthed in Israel on Canaanite sherd-Researchers say pottery fragment from Tel Lachish is the oldest artifact of its kind found in region, could explain how writing system reached Levant from Egypt-By TOI staff-APR 15,21-Today, 2:46 pm

A 3,500-year-old alphabetic inscription has been found by archaeologists during excavations at the ancient Canaanite town of Tel Lachish, with researchers saying the pottery sherd is the oldest in the region with alphabetic text. They described the discovery as the “missing link” in the history of the early alphabetic writing in the Southern Levant, the system of writing that most, if not all, alphabetic scripts can be traced back to.The clay fragment, measuring just 40 millimeters by 35 millimeters, is said to have been part of a milk bowl imported from Cyprus, according to an article published in the journal Antiquity on Thursday. The sherd was found during renewed excavations by an Austrian team in 2018 after previous artifacts were unearthed by a Tel Aviv team between 1973 and 1987.While it was difficult to decipher the text on the small sherd, and unclear from which direction it should be read, researchers said the first three letters could spell out ‘bd meaning slave, or part of a common Semitic personal name. The second line could read nophet, meaning honey or nectar in Hebrew, or part of an unknown name if read from the opposite direction. The inscription helps contextualize the spread of the early alphabet in the Levant, as well as evidence that it developed both independently and well before the Egyptian domination in the region, the researchers concluded. The Tel Lachish archaeological site is said to be one of the most prominent Bronze Age and Iron Age sites of the Southern Levant. It is situated near the modern Israeli town of the same name.

Iran says concern about ‘peaceful’ nuke program is a ‘mistake,’ as talks resume-Khamenei says Vienna offers ‘not worth looking at’ after hiking uranium enrichment in response to alleged Israel attack on Natanz plant, with tensions skyrocketing-By Agencies and TOI staff-APR 15,21-Today, 2:06 pm

Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani sought to allay Western concerns on Wednesday over his country’s decision to enrich uranium to 60% purity, saying the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program is “peaceful,” as talks over the battered 2015 nuclear deal resumed in Vienna.Rouhani said it was a “mistake” for Europe and the United States to express concerns that the move “means we can enrich to 90% in one go.”“Our nuclear activities are peaceful; we are not seeking to obtain the atomic bomb,” he said in remarks broadcast on state television.Iran insists its nuclear program is peaceful, though its leaders regularly threaten to destroy Israel and the West and the International Atomic Energy Agency says Tehran had an organized military nuclear program up until the end of 2003. An annual US intelligence report released Tuesday maintained the American assessment that “Iran is not currently undertaking the key nuclear weapons-development activities that we judge would be necessary to produce a nuclear device.”Iran previously had said it could use uranium enriched up to 60% for nuclear-powered ships. However, the Islamic Republic currently has no such ships in its navy.France, Germany and the United Kingdom, all parties to the nuclear deal, only hours earlier issued a joint statement Wednesday expressing their “grave concern” over Iran’s decision to increase enrichment.“This is a serious development since the production of highly enriched uranium constitutes an important step in the production of a nuclear weapon,” the countries said. “Iran has no credible civilian need for enrichment at this level.”China and Russia also took part in the deal.US Secretary of State Antony Blinken also called Iran’s enrichment decision a “provocative announcement.”The talks already have been thrown into disarray by this week’s attack on Iran’s main Natanz nuclear enrichment site suspected to have been carried out by Israel. Tehran retaliated by announcing it would enrich uranium up to 60% — higher than it ever has before but still lower than weapons-grade levels of 90%.Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Wednesday dismissed initial offers at the Vienna talks as “not worth looking at,” attempting to pressure the world powers.“The offers they provide are usually arrogant and humiliating (and) are not worth looking at,” the 81-year-old Khamenei said in an address marking the first day of the holy Muslim fasting month of Ramadan in Iran.He also criticized the US and warned time could be running out.“The talks shouldn’t become talks of attrition,” Khamenei said. “They shouldn’t be in a way that parties drag on and prolong the talks. This is harmful to the country.”Speaking to his Cabinet on Wednesday, Rouhani said the first-generation IR-1 centrifuges that were damaged in Sunday’s attack would be replaced by advanced IR-6 centrifuges that enrich uranium much faster.“You wanted to make our hands empty during the talks but our hands are full,” Rouhani said. “60% enrichment is an answer to your evilness. … We cut off both of your hands, one with IR-6 centrifuges and another one with 60%.”Iran had been enriching up to 20% — even that was a short technical step to weapons-grade levels. The deal limited Iran’s enrichment tIn Jerusalem at a Memorial Day commemoration Wednesday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appeared to reference Iran.“We must never remain apathetic to the threats of war and extermination of those who seek to eliminate us,” he said. Israel has not claimed the attack, though it rarely does in its ongoing shadow war against Tehran. The attack on Natanz came a day after Iran announced it had started up advanced uranium enrichment centrifuges banned under the 2015 deal limiting its nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief. While hosting US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin at his office in Jerusalem, Netanyahu vowed that Israel would never let Iran get nuclear weapons. In 2020, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, the scientist said by Israel and the US to head Iran’s rogue nuclear weapons program was assassinated in an ambush near the capital Tehran. Top Iran officials blamed Israel for the killing. The talks in Vienna are aimed at finding a way for the United States to reenter Tehran’s nuclear agreement with world powers and have Iran comply again with its limits. The accord, which former US president Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew the US from in 2018, prevented Iran from stockpiling enough high-enriched uranium to be able to pursue a nuclear weapon in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions.Iran’s envoy to the IAEA, Kazem Gharibabadi, posted a letter online addressed to IAEA Director-General Rafael Grossi warning against “any adventurism by (the) Israeli regime” targeting Iranian nuclear sites.“The most recent cowardly act of nuclear terrorism will only strengthen our determination to march forward and to replace all (damaged) centrifuges with even more advanced and sophisticated machines,” Gharibabadi wrote.IAEA inspectors visited Natanz on Wednesday on their first trip since the sabotage and found Iran preparing an above-ground area for the higher enrichment, the agency said.Iran has “almost completed preparations to start producing (uranium gas) enriched up to 60%,” the IAEA said in a later statement. “Iran informed the agency that the necessary pipework was being finalized and that feeding of (uranium gas) enriched up to 5% into a cascade of IR-6 centrifuges would start soon thereafter.”The weekend attack at Natanz was initially described only as a blackout in the electrical grid feeding above-ground workshops and underground enrichment halls — but later Iranian officials began calling it an attack.Alireza Zakani, the hard-line head of the Iranian parliament’s research center, referred to “several thousand centrifuges damaged and destroyed” in a state TV interview. However, no other official has offered that figure and no images of the aftermath have been released.Satellite photographs from Planet Labs Inc. of Natanz taken Wednesday and analyzed by The Associated Press showed no apparent damage above ground at the facility.

Russia says US sanctions ‘won’t help’ possible Putin-Biden summit-White House said planning to expel Russian diplomats, announce financial measures over alleged election interference and SolarWinds cyberattack-By AFP-APR 15,21-Today, 3:05 pm

MOSCOW, Russia — The Kremlin said Thursday that planned US sanctions against Russia in retaliation for alleged election interference and hacking will not “help” a potential summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Joe Biden.Biden in a phone call with Putin on Tuesday invited him to hold a summit on neutral ground, as tensions between the West and Russia have escalated in recent weeks over the conflict in Ukraine.US media on Thursday reported that Washington will announce sanctions affecting more than 30 Russian entities, expelling more than 10 Russian diplomats from the United States and expanding an existing ban on US banks trading in Russian government debt.“What is currently being discussed — likely sanctions — will in no way help such a meeting. That is unambiguous,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters, referring to the summit. He said, however, that it will be up to Putin and Biden to decide whether the summit will still go ahead. On Wednesday, US ambassador to Moscow John Sullivan was summoned to the Kremlin and told that Washington must refrain from introducing new sanctions on Russia if it wants to mend ties, a Russian foreign ministry spokesperson told AFP.Ties between Washington and Moscow have frayed since 2014 when Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine and a conflict broke out between Ukrainian government forces and pro-Russia separatists in the east.Relations have since reached their lowest point since the Cold War, with the United States imposing a series of sanctions on Russia including over alleged hacking of its 2016 presidential vote and the jailing of Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny.

US said planning to expel Russian diplomats, announce sanctions over hacking-Reports say imminent move is response to alleged election interference and SolarWinds cyberattack; tensions rising amid Russia-Ukraine conflict-By AFP-APR 15,21-Today, 1:04 pm

WASHINGTON — The United States will announce sanctions against Russia on Thursday in retaliation for alleged election interference and hacking, American media reported.Tensions have escalated between the two countries in recent months over a raft of issues, most recently over Russia amassing troops on its border with Ukraine. The sanctions will affect more than 30 Russian entities and will include expelling more than 10 Russians from the United States, including diplomats, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing sources. The diplomats will be targeted as punishment over allegations, denied by Russia, that it offered to pay militants in Afghanistan to kill American military personnel, the newspaper said. The executive order will also expand an existing ban on US banks trading in Russian government debt.Washington is also set to formally accuse Russian intelligence of carrying out the SolarWinds hack that targeted more than 100 US companies and 18,000 government and private computer networks. The president of Microsoft, one of the companies targeted, has said the sophistication and scale of the SolarWinds attack were on a level not previously seen.Russia has denied carrying out the attack.Together with Britain, Australia, Canada, and the European Union, the United States will also sanction eight individuals and entities over the occupation of Crimea, the Journal reported. The sanctions come at a difficult time for US-Russia relations.US President Joe Biden and Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin held a phone call Tuesday in which they agreed to “continue dialogue,” after Biden last month described Putin as a “killer” who would “pay a price” for election meddling.US intelligence has previously said Putin and other senior officials “were aware of and probably directed” Russia’s influence operation to sway the vote in the 2020 election in favor of Donald Trump.More recently a Russian troop build-up on the border with Ukraine — where Kyiv’s forces have been battling pro-Russian separatists since 2014 — has sparked widespread alarm and warnings from NATO.

Associated Press-Egypt, Tunisia discuss Libya, Ethiopia's disputed dam-Sat, April 10, 2021, 10:34 AM

CAIRO (AP) — Egypt’s president met Saturday his Tunisian counterpart in Cairo, where they discussed neighboring Libya, and a massive dam Ethiopia is building over the Nile River’s main tributary.Tunisian President Kais Saied arrived in Cairo on Friday for a three-day visit. He was received at the airport by President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi.The two leaders held “extensive and constructive” talks Saturday at Cairo’s Ittihadiya palace, which serves as the Egyptian president's office, Saied said.“We hope that Libya goes down the correct path... There’s no way of dividing Libya," he told a joint news conference with el-Sissi. Libya is a neighbor to Egypt and Tunisia. The country plunged into chaos after a NATO-backed uprising in 2011 toppled longtime ruler Moammar Gadhafi. The two leaders also discussed a massive dam Ethiopia is building on the Nile River’s main tributary. Egypt and Sudan consider the project a major threat if it is filled and operated without a legally binding agreement. The Tunisian president said his country supports Egypt’s position in the yearslong dispute. He said any damage to Egypt’s water security is unacceptable.“We are looking for just solutions, but Egypt’s national security is ours, and Egypt’s position... will be ours.”Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia are deadlocked in a dispute over the dam, and the latest round of talks collapsed Tuesday.

Envoy: US ready to facilitate stalled Israel-Lebanon maritime border talks-David Hale says any progress in talks that ran aground during Trump’s final days would offer significant economic benefits for Beirut as it struggles to recover from crisis-By Jacob Magid and AP-APR 15,21-Today, 1:02 pm 0

A senior US official on Thursday offered Washington’s assistance in facilitating negotiations between Israel and Lebanon to resolve their maritime border dispute.“These negotiations have potential to unlock significant economic benefits for Lebanon,” said US Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs David Hale in a statement to the press after meeting with Lebanese President Michel Aoun, at the presidential palace, in Baabda, east of Beirut.“This is all the more critical against the backdrop of the severe economic crisis the country is facing. As needed, international experts can be brought in to help inform all of us,” Hale added.Lebanon is undergoing through its worst economic and financial crisis in its modern history and has plans to start drilling in search of oil and gas in the disputed area this year.Hale’s comments appeared to be the first by an official from the Biden administration on an issue that was picked up by the Trump administration during its final days, though few analysts expected the lame-duck president to have success at opening up the logjam.Days earlier, Lebanon’s outgoing minister of public works said that he has signed a decree that would increase the area claimed by his country in the maritime border dispute with Israel. Israel’s Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz responded by accusing Lebanon of “blowing up” negotiations between the two countries to resolve the issue.Lebanese Public Works Minister Michel Najjar told reporters that he had signed an amendment of the decree that would formally extend Lebanon’s claims by 1,430 square kilometers (550 square miles).Najjar said, however, that his decree still required the signatures of the defense minister, prime minister and president to go into effect. In addition to angering Israel, the unilateral move likely annoyed the US, as neither of the allies is expected to recognize Beirut’s extension of the disputed area.“It seems that Lebanon prefers to blow up the talks instead of trying to reach agreed-upon solutions,” Steinitz said in a statement.“Unfortunately, this won’t be the first time in the past 20 years that the Lebanese changed their naval maps for propaganda purposes,” he continued. “Obviously, unilateral Lebanese steps will be met in kind by Israel.”Lebanon and Israel began indirect talks with US mediation in October to reach a deal over the disputed area that is believed to be rich with oil and natural gas deposits. The meetings, which stopped few weeks later, were held at a UN post along the border of the two nations. The negotiations were the first non-security talks to be held between the two countries, which remain technically in a state of war and have no diplomatic relations following decades of conflict. Resolving the border issue could pave the way for lucrative oil and gas deals on both sides.Israel has already developed offshore natural gas rigs, producing enough for domestic consumption and export abroad. Lebanon hopes that its own oil and gas discoveries will help alleviate its long-running economic troubles.US warns Lebanon of punitive actions-Also in his Thursday statement, Hale warned that Lebanese politicians who continue to block reforms in the crisis-hit country could face punitive actions by Washington and its allies.Hale did not provide details on the nature of the potential actions. But appeared to refer to reports that the US and its allies may impose sanctions on Lebanese politicians in order to force them to end a monthslong political deadlock and start badly needed reforms to fight corruption.Political bickering has delayed the formation of a new cabinet as the country sinks deeper into its worst economic and financial crisis in its modern history. The economic crisis is the gravest threat to Lebanon’s stability since the 15-year civil war ended in 1990.The outgoing government resigned last August, following a massive explosion at Beirut’s port that killed 211 people, injured more than 6,000 and damaged entire neighborhoods in the capital.Prime Minister-designate Saad Hariri has failed to form a new government since he was named for the post in October. Hariri has been insisting on forming a Cabinet of experts whose main job will be to get Lebanon out of its paralyzing economic crisis.Other groups, including the powerful Iran-backed Hezbollah, insist on a mixed cabinet of politicians and experts.“Those who continue to obstruct progress on the reform agenda jeopardize their relationship with the United States and our partners and open themselves up to punitive actions,” Hale said after meeting Aoun Thursday morning.“Today there’s been very little progress but it’s not too late,” Hale said, adding that Washington has long called for Lebanon’s leaders to show sufficient flexibility to form a government that “is willing and capable to reversing the collapse that is underway.”He added that the US and the international community are ready to help, saying that “the time to form a government, not block it, is now. The time to build a government is now. The time for comprehensive reform is now.”The local currency has been in freefall since late 2019, losing around 90 percent of its value. The government defaulted on its foreign debt last year and nearly half the population has been pushed into poverty and unemployment.Speaking about indirect negotiations between the US and Iran over Tehran’s nuclear program that began earlier this month, Hale said a future deal will be “in our interests and in the interest of regional stability.”He added that “America will not abandon our interests and our friends here in Lebanon.”
