And New York is not alone in hosting such messages. The sign is one of dozens of similar billboards that have appeared in major cities around the country this summer -- all in an effort by a group of American Muslims to dispel misconceptions about the Prophet Muhammad, the founder of Islam.The Islamic Circle of North America, a national Muslim organization with about 40 chapters around the country, is responsible for the estimated 100 billboards in 32 cities, including major hubs like Atlanta, Boston, San Francisco, Chicago, Houston, Memphis and Calgary, Canada. The billboards feature various messages like “Muhammad always taught love, not hate; peace, not violence” and “Discover Muhammad.” The campaign, which is paid for by local ICNA chapters, was launched after the Charlie Hebdo attacks in Paris in January.“This year we were going to focus on the theme of faith and service, originally,” said ICNA national president Naeem Baig. “But after the attacks in France, we started to receive calls from other Muslims, asking what we were going to do and how we were going to respond. So we came up with this idea, to focus on the understanding of the life of the Prophet.”Baig said that the Prophet Muhammad had faced much persecution during his life, but his response had always been a peaceful one. A Brief History of Elul-The 3rd 40 Days-CHABAD.ORG

The origins of Elul as a month of special Divine grace and mercy go back to the time of Moses, in the year 2448 from creation (1313 BCE)--the first year after the Jewish people went out of Egypt.Seven weeks after the exodus, the people of Israel received the Torah at Mount Sinai and entered into an eternal covenant with G-d as His chosen people. But just 40 days later, while Moses was still up on the mountain, they violated their special relationship with G-d by worshipping a golden calf. Upon descending from the mountain and witnessing their transgression, Moses smashed the two stone tablets on which G-d had inscribed the Ten Commandments; he then retuned to Mount Sinai for a second 40 days to plead with G-d on Israel's behalf.On the early morning of the 1st of Elul, Moses once again ascended Mount Sinai, taking with him the stone tablets he had hewn, by divine command, for G-d to re-inscribe the Ten Commandments. On the mountain, G-d allowed Moses to "see My back, but not My face" (which Maimonides interprets as a perception of G-d's reality but not His essence) -- the closest any human being ever came to knowing G-d -- and taught him the secret of His "Thirteen Attributes of Mercy" (Exodus 33:18-34:8).For the third time, Moses remained on the mountain for 40 days, from the 1st of Elul until the 10th of Tishrei (Yom Kippur), during which time He obtained G-d's whole-hearted forgiveness and reconciliation with the people of Israel. On 1 Elul, he went up to receive the second tablets, and was there for forty days. On 10 Tishrei, G‑d restored His goodwill with the Jewish people gladly and wholeheartedly, saying to Moses, “I have forgiven, as you ask,” and gave him the Second Tablets.Rashi, Exodus 32:1 and 33:11-A single drop of seawater, analyzed in the laboratory, will reveal the characteristics of billions of her sisters; indeed, it will tell you much about every drop in every ocean on earth.The same is true of history. On the one hand, each period is unique, each year, day and moment distinct in content and character. And yet, as we often recognize, the story of an individual life may tell the story of a century, and the events of a single generation may embody those of an entire era. On the surface, time may more resemble the disparate terrain of land than it does the uniform face of the sea; but once you strip away the externalities of background and circumstance, a drop in the ocean of time will reflect vast tracts of its waters and, ultimately, its entire expanse.We, who travel the terrestrial surface of time, know it as a succession of events and experiences. The events of this period, experienced by the Jewish people soon after their birth as a nation, choreograph the very essence of the human story—the basis, the process and the end goal of life on earth. The hundred and twenty days from 6 Sivan 2448 to 10 Tishrei 2449 contained it all: the underpinnings of creation, the saga of human struggle, and the ultimate triumph which arises from the imperfections and failings of man.-The Events-On 6 Sivan 2448, the entire people of Israel gathered at Mount Sinai to receive the Torah from the Almighty. There they experienced the revelation of G‑d, and heard the Ten Commandments, which encapsulate the entire Torah. The following morning Moses ascended the mountain, where he communed with G‑d for forty days and forty nights and received the Torah proper, the more detailed rendition of G‑d’s communication to humanity.At the end of Moses’ (first) forty days on Mount Sinai, G‑d gave him two tablets of stone, the handiwork of G‑d, upon which the Ten Commandments were engraved by the finger of G‑d. But in the camp below, the Jewish people were already abandoning their newly made covenant with G‑d. Reverting to the paganism of Egypt, they made a calf of gold and, amidst feasting and hedonistic disport, proclaimed it the god of Israel.G‑d said to Moses: Descend, for your people, which you have brought up from the land of Egypt, have been corrupted; they have quickly turned from the path that I have commanded them . . .Moses turned and went down from the mountain, with the two tablets of testimony in his hand . . . When Moses approached the camp and saw the calf and the dancing . . . he threw the tablets from his hands and shattered them at the foot of the mountain.It was the 17th of Tammuz.Moses destroyed the idol and rehabilitated the errant nation. He then returned to Sinai for a second forty days, to plead before G‑d for the forgiveness of Israel. G‑d acquiesced, and agreed to provide a second set of tablets to replace those which had been broken in the wake of Israel’s sin. These tablets, however, were not to be the handiwork of G‑d, but of human construction:G‑d said to Moses: Carve yourself two tablets of stone, like the first; and I shall inscribe upon them the words that were on the first tablets which you have broken . . . Come up in the morning to Mt. Sinai, and present yourself there to Me on the top of the mountain.Moses ascended Sinai, for his third and final forty days atop the mountain, on 1 Elul. G‑d had already forgiven Israel’s sin, and now a new and invigorated relationship between Him and His people was to be rebuilt on the ruins of the old. On 10 Tishrei we received our second set of the Ten Commandments, inscribed by G‑d upon the tablets carved by Moses hand.Thus, we have three forty-day periods, and three corresponding states of Torah: the first tablets, the broken tablets and the second tablets. These embody the foundation of our existence, the challenge of life and the ultimate achievement of man.-The Plot-Our sages point out that the opening verse of the Torah’s account of creation, Bereishit bara Elokim . . . (“In the beginning G‑d created the heavens and earth”), begins with the letter beit, the second letter of the Hebrew alphabet. This is to teach us that there is an alef that comes before the beit of the created existence: that creation is not an end in itself, but comes to serve a principle which precedes it in sequence and substance.The pre-Genesis alef is the alef of Anochi Hashem Elokecha . . . (“I am the L‑rd your G‑d . . .”)—the first letter of the Ten Commandments. Torah is G‑d’s preconception of what life on earth should be like; the basis and raison d’etre of creation is that we develop ourselves and our environment to this ideal.But G‑d wanted more. More than the realization of His original blueprint for existence, more than the falling into place of a preprogrammed perfection. More than a “first tablets” world that is wholly the handiwork of G‑d.A created entity, by definition, has nothing that is truly its own: all the tools, potentials and possibilities it possesses have been given to it by its creator. But G‑d desired that the human experience should yield a profit beyond what is projected—or even warranted—by His initial investment in us. So He created us with the vulnerabilities of the human condition.He created us with the freedom to choose, and thus with the potential for failure. When we act rightly and constructively, we are behaving according to plan, and realizing the potential invested within us by our Creator. But when we choose to act wrongly and destructively, we enter into a state of being that is not part of the plan of Torah—indeed, it is the antithesis of what Torah prescribes. Yet this state of being is the springboard for teshuvah (return)—the power to rise from the ruins of our fall to a new dimension of perfection, a perfection unenvisionable by our untarnished past.This is how chassidic teaching explains G‑d’s creation of the possibility of evil. This is “His fearsome plot upon the children of man.” The soul of man is a spark of G‑dliness, inherently and utterly good; in and of itself, it is in no way susceptible to corruption. Its human frailties are nothing less than a contrived plot, imposed upon it in total contrast to its essential nature.If the first tablets are the divine vision of creation, the broken tablets are our all-too-familiar world—a world that tolerates imperfection, failure, even outright evil. It is a world whose first tablets have been shattered—a world gone awry of its foundation and its true self, a world wrenched out of sync with its inherent goodness. The broken tablets are a plot contrived by the Author of existence to allow the possibility for second tablets. Every failing, every decline can be exploited and redirected as a positive force. Every breakdown of the soul’s “first tablets” perfection is an opportunity for man to carve for yourself a second set, in which the divine script is chiseled upon the tablets of human initiative and creation. A second set which includes an entire vista of potentials that were beyond the scope of the first, wholly divine set.G‑d said to Moses: Do not be distressed over the first tablets, which contained only the Ten Commandments. In the second tablets I am giving you also halachah, midrash and aggadah.Had Israel not sinned with the Golden Calf, our sages conclude, they would have received only the five books of Moses and the book of Joshua. For as the verse says, “Much wisdom comes through much grief.”-Remembered and Enacted-These hundred and twenty days have left a lasting imprint on our experience of time. For the Jewish calendar does far more than measure and mark time; in the words of the book of Esther, “These days are remembered and enacted.” The festivals and commemorative dates that mark our annual journey through time are opportunities to reenact the events and achievements which they remember.Every Shavuot, we once again experience the revelation at Sinai and our acquisition of the blueprint and foundation of our lives. Every year on the 17th of Tammuz, we once again deal with the setbacks and breakdowns epitomized by the events of the day. The month of Elul and the first ten days of Tishrei, corresponding to Moses’ third 40-day stay on Mount Sinai, are, as they were then, days of goodwill between G‑d and man—days in which the Almighty is that much more accessible to all who seek Him.And Yom Kippur, the holiest and most potent day of the year, marks the climax of the 120-day saga. Historically, the Pleiades were seen as a group of seven stars – its brightest stars: Alcyone, Atlas, Electra, Maia, Merope, Taygeta and Pleione are visible to the keen naked eye. However modern observations show that this most famous of open clusters is comprised of several hundred stars wreathed in intricately structured nebulosity.As the Pleiades cluster is close to the ecliptic (within 4°) in the constellation of Taurus it is a spring and autumnal 'seasonal' object in both the northern and southern hemispheres. Being close to the ecliptic, there are frequent occultations of the cluster with the Moon and planets. To our superstitious ancestors these were, no doubt, portentious events. Likewise, the apparent annual motion of the cluster would have been highly significant. The heliacal (near dawn) rising of the Pleiades in spring in the northern hemisphere has from ancient times augured the opening of the seafaring and farming season: while its dawn autumnal setting marked the season's end.And also Spring and fall are Bird migration seasons in Israel.It would not surprise me if Israeli wars are not fought around the time of the Pleiades-Orion happenings.The Bible contains three direct references to the Pleiades in Job 9:9 and 38:31, and Amos 5:8, and a single indirect reference in the New Testament. He will teach us his ways, so that we may walk in his paths.’ The law will go out from Zion, the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.” (Isaiah 2:3) 71 elders of Israel who identify themselves as the Sanhedrin gathered Wednesday on Mount Zion in a historic trial bringing to judgement Pope Francis and US President Barack Obama in absentia. The rabbis called the two leaders to trial for crimes leading to the mortal endangerment of Israel and the Jewish nation.After appointing each of the judges to sit on the nascent Sanhedrin, silver horns, similar to those used in the service of the Jewish Temples, and shofars (rams horns), were blown. The trial was opened with the statement: “Joyous is the nation who hears the shofar. Joyous is the nation who knows that this is their land. When will it be that we hear the shofar of the Messiah?”The central issue the Sanhedrin focused on during the trial was the changing global tide against Israel and the Jews. Among the various points brought up by each rabbi on the Sanhedrin, the main theme centered on the long trail of diplomacy mislabeled as a peace process, the misguided and dangerous nuclear deal with Iran and recent attempts to appease the world of Israel as it murders Christians in Arab countries.The strongest charges were made against the Pope, who recently recognized a “State of Palestine” with an official treaty. According to the Sanhedrin, the Pope, who claims to accept the Bible that states clearly that the land of Israel was given to the Jews, has placed the world in grave danger.It was agreed beforehand that for the trial to be a true judgment, a counsel must be found who would represent the defendants in absentia with a strong belief in his case. Rabbi Yehoshua Hollander, who was until recently the Foreign Minister of the Sanhedrin, acted as counsel for the defense and brought forth compelling arguments that were difficult to refute.While Hollander agreed that the facts as stated by the Sanhedrin were accurate and irrefutable, he claimed that each of the defendants were innocent nonetheless and offered three factors that would lead the Sanhedrin to withhold judgement from the defendants.The first case, defense by circumstance, justified the actions of the Pope and Obama in light of ameliorating circumstances. The second case, defense by deflection, attributed  part of the guilt to others. The third defense, defense by lack of intent, claimed that there was no criminal intent behind the actions of the two leaders. By Jewish law, lacking of criminal intent exonerates the defendant from the criminal charges but would nevertheless leave the defendant liable for all damages caused by his behavior.Hollander reasoned that the Pope was faced with massive slaughter of his followers, and therefore his attempts to placate Islam were not directed against the Jewish People. He also diverted some of the guilt from the accused by implicating the Israeli government, who have acknowledged the Palestinian claims, thereby misleading the defendants and being complicit in the crime.The same can be said about Obama, which Hollander explained, “When he took office, the sanctions were working, albeit not quickly enough. Thus the first defense, defense by circumstance, is not available.”Hollander did try to justify the president’s actions by claiming that they appears to be based on hope.  “I would claim that President Obama had no criminal intent,” he stated. “He said that he believes that by making Iran a member of world Leadership, they would drop their intent of bombing Israel. It is not criminal to hold such a hope.”In the end, the Sanhedrin did not come out with any specific judgement against the Pope and Obama, rather judgements directed at their policies and actions. Rabbi Hillel Weiss, spokesman and secretary of the Sanhedrin, explained to Breaking Israel News, “It was the decision of the Sanhedrin to declare that it is forbidden for the United States Congress to agree to any process with Iran until they recognize Israel as the Jewish state according to the Holy Bible, based on a history that includes the Temple on Har Moriah in Jerusalem, and they must agree to the removal and disposal of any nuclear weapons in their possession.”Counsel for the defense, Hollander made clear his motivations behind his passionate defense of Obama and the Pope. “There is a problem in the world today, and rather than separate ourselves, the Jews should be leading and accompanying them in order to help,” he told Breaking Israel News.  “We need to be joining together.  We can do this because have a long history of going into other countries and coexisting for mutual benefit.”Rabbi Daniel Stavsky, an elder on the Sanhedrin, told Breaking Israel News following the trial that Israel must learn from the lessons of the Holocaust in order to protect the future of the state and the nation.“They cannot forget or deny this, so the haters of Israel cannot allow themselves to do this again. Hallelujah.” (Psalms 147:19) A Palestinian member of the al-Fatah Revolutionary Council has spoke out condemning the self-declared Sanhedrin’s letter to Pope Francis, which demands that the Pope rescind his recognition of the “State of Palestine” or face trial in Jerusalem.The Sanhedrin decided to try the Pope after the Vatican signed its first comprehensive treaty with the “State of Palestine”, thereby officially recognizing its statehood. The treaty was ratified on May 13.As previously reported by Breaking Israel News, the nascent Sanhedrin has also sent a letter to US President Barack Obama, calling him to trial for “criminal offenses” against the Jewish people. Both the Pope and Obama have chosen to ignore the summons, but the Sanhedrin’s cries for justice and truth have not gone unnoticed.According to the Centre for Research in Globalization, Dimitri Diliani, a member of the al-Fatah Revolutionary Council, told the Felesteen online news service that the Sanhedrin’s letter to the Pope included many false claims about the history of “Palestine” and seeks to rob the Palestinian people of their natural rights in their homeland and to deny non-Jews of any rights.Diliani called on the Vatican and Catholic churches around the world to intervene and put an end to Israeli “arrogance, racism and violations” against the Palestinian people and their land.However, Diliani’s claim seems to be inaccurate. Rabbi Yisrael Ariel and Rabbi Eliyahu Zini will preside over the court, which will be hearing witnesses and expert testimony.It should be noted that less than two weeks after the trial, on September 22, Pope Francis will be hosted at the White House by US President Barack Obama. The visit, coincidentally, will take place on the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, when God finalizes judgement on all mankind.

The European Parliament (EP) passed a resolution on the EU’s Role in the Middle East Peace Process Thursday, but rejected an amendment calling for Israeli-Palestinian negotiations to be based on the two-state principle.The amendment was rejected 421 to 134 with 59 abstentions, in what critics see as an expression of the EP's reluctance to accept Israel's very right to exist.Martina Anderson, a Member of the European Parliament, in an intervention just before the vote, warned that support for the amendment would pave the way for “ethnic cleansing” of the non-Jewish population.The American Jewish Committee's Transatlantic Institute said following the vote that it is disappointed that the EP did not endorse the principle of “two states for two peoples.”"The United Nations Resolution 181, the partition plan passed by the UN in November 1947, specifically called for dividing Palestine into independent Arab and Jewish states, with each state constituting the respective homelands for its peoples,” said Daniel Schwammenthal, Director of the AJC Transatlantic Institute. “It is the rejection of this very concept of a Jewish homeland in the region that led to the first Arab-Israeli war and that is still the core of the conflict. It is unfortunate that the European Parliament failed to reaffirm this principle, thus missing an opportunity for a constructive support of the the peace process.“This is nothing short of incitement against the Jewish state,” said Schwammenthal. “Israel, which already considers itself a ‘Jewish state,’ respects the civil rights of all its citizens and is the only country in the Middle East where Arabs enjoy democratic rights and freedom from persecution.”The resolution, initiated by Socialist group in the European Parliament, supports EU High Representative Federica Mogherini’s initiative to give the EU a stronger role in pushing for peace negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.The final resolution, agreed among all major political groups, is far more balanced than the socialist group's original draft. This allows the Palestinian flag to now be raised in front of UN buildings. It is interesting to note that the only other country benefiting from this new rule is the Vatican, which signed its first formal bilateral treaty recognizing Palestinian statehood in May. The Holy See has already announced that it will not exercise the privilege, asking that it not be named in the motion, despite Pope Francis being scheduled to address the General Assembly later this month.Archbishop Bernardito Auza, the Vatican’s UN ambassador, told the assembly after the vote that “the Holy See has always respected the 70-year practice and tradition of the United Nations that there are only flags of member states that are flown at the United Nations.” But, he said, it didn’t object to the Palestinian proposal and respects the assembly’s decision.119 countries supported the move while eight, including Israel, voted against it. 45 nations abstained. Canada, Australia, and the United States were among those few who voted against the motion. A second diplomat from the group of 16 said it’s expected “in autumn”. A third one said: “We’re asking, every month, what’s the latest timing?”.A fourth diplomat said the EU has tacit US approval and a US precedent.“Similar labelling rules already exist in the US, but almost nobody knows about them. The floodwaters have receded somewhat, but a vast area of the Japanese city of Joso remains inundated by a sea of brown water.As the sun came out Friday, shocked residents and officials began to take stock of the damage wrought the previous day when a rain-swollen river burst through its eastern bank, pouring in water so rapidly that many people could only clamber upstairs or to their roofs to escape."We survived but it looks like some of our soybeans and rice didn't," said Keiko Iita, 70, who spent the night with her husband and son on the second floor of their house.She wore gloves and covered her face with a towel as she helped clean a neighbor's mud-coated barn. Farmers were clearing the mess in their fields and assessing the damage to their flattened soybean plants and other crops.Two days of torrential rain caused flooding and landslides across much of Japan this week. At least one person died, a woman in her 60s who was found after a landslide hit houses at the foot of a steep, wooded hill in Kanuma city in Tochigi prefecture.Some 300 kilometers (190 miles) north of Joso, another river overflowed into the city of Osaki on Friday morning, swamping homes and fields and stranding at least 60 people, according to media reports.But the hardest-hit place appeared to be Joso, 50 kilometers (30 miles) northeast of Tokyo. U.S. stocks ended the holiday-shortened week on a high note, with the main indexes advancing and posting solid weekly gains. This has been the tenth week during which the S&P 500 alternated between weekly gains and losses. This week's trading sessions were calmer than the two previous ones, when the market saw big swings in both directions. The S&P 500 SPX, +0.45% closed 8.72 points, or 0.5% higher at 1,961.01 and gained 2.1% over the week. Technology and health-care stocks led the gains this week, while the energy sector was the only decliner for the week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.63% gained 102.49 points, or 0.6%, to 16,432.89 and ended the week with a 2% gain. The article, published in India’s third largest newspaper, suggested a connection between the Jewish concept of Shmittah and the current global financial hardship caused by crashes in international stock markets.Many have cried foul, claiming the articles assertions are a form of anti-Semitism. In the comments section, many readers were insulted, with one critic claiming the writer was “perhaps unconsciously borrowing from anti-Semitic conspiracy theories,” labeling the article “pernicious and slanderous.” Another reader called the article “blatant anti-Semitism.”Is this article another attempt at anti-Semitism, a modern version of Protocols of the Elders of Zion, or is it an unexpected affirmation that Biblical concepts are true and relevant in our modern world? Breaking Israel News has written several articles on the topic of Shmittah cycle, most recently detailing a statistical analysis of the Shmittah as it appears throughout the history of the American stock market. There were many reactions to the article, including those who dismissed it, claiming that Shmittah was an agricultural system for allowing fields to lie fallow. What Li didn’t mention was the spiraling bill associated with keeping the economy on course to hit the Communist Party’s growth target of about 7 percent for this year.From building bridges and highways to shoring up the nation’s currency and stock markets, China is rolling out hundreds of billions of dollars in its biggest stimulus since the package that followed the 2008 global financial crisis. More spending is coming, with the finance ministry this week urging an acceleration of projects and promising to cut fees and taxes for companies, while provinces are taking their own steps to support growth.Beijing has turned on the taps, lifting spending on everything from infrastru‎cture to public services, said Frederic Neumann, co-head of Asian economic research at HSBC Holdings Plc in Hong Kong. "Recessions typically only transpire when residential investment becomes elevated as a share of GDP."While there is plenty of upside for construction activity, the availability of workers to carry this out is more suspect.Neil Dutta, head of U.S. economics at Renaissance Macro Research in New York, noted that the relative strength of the labor and housing market makes for quite an abnormal dynamic."What is interesting about this is that the housing market is accelerating at a time when the labor market is near full employment," he said.He suggested that any shortage of construction workers could be remedied by displaced mining employees and higher wages to attract additional labor.The unemployment rate, which dipped to 5.1 percent in August, has rapidly converged upon the Federal Reserve's estimates for the non-accelerating inflation rate of unemployment, which is a range of 5 percent to 5.2 percent. That is, monetary policymakers think that 5 percent is the lowest the unemployment rate can get before inflationary pressures start to arise.Labor slack has been eliminated at a rapid pace, though broader measures of the health of the jobs market suggest work remains to be done.Bloomberg-On a recent interview on BloombergTV, New River Investment portfolio manager Conor Sen indicated that the U.S. single-family housing market would enjoy a strong secular tailwind over the next 10 to 15 years as millennials formed households and shifted from renting to owning homes.Sen separately observed that single-family housing starts, as a share of the prime age population (25 to 54 years old), remain at very subdued levels. If single-family starts normalize to 1.25 million, more than 250,000 workers would be needed to erect them, assuming that the ratio between starts and residential construction jobs reverts to what it has averaged since the start of 1985.Dutta concurred with the demographic support for construction activity, pointing out that children born in the 1980s, when the birth rate was climbing, will make up the next batch of first-time homebuyers. He also noted that cyclical forces, such as easing lending standards and rising homebuilder confidence, buoy the outlook for the sector."Bad things do not happen to America when housing is moving up and to the right while Americans are finding jobs," said Dutta.
