Jeb Bush sought more of a middle ground on the Davis issue, reminding a town hall in New Hampshire that the county clerk is sworn to uphold the law.“It seems to me there ought to be common ground, there ought to be big enough space for her to act on her conscience and for, now that the law is the law of the land, for a gay couple to be married in whatever jurisdiction that is,” the former Florida governor said.Donald Trump, the leader in most of the Republican polls, told MSNBC he hates to see Davis in jail, but “we’re a nation of laws” and the Supreme Court has spoken on the issue.“She can take a pass and let somebody else in the office do it,” Trump said. Most of the other Republican candidates took a harder line in support of Davis, echoing their criticism of the Supreme Court decision sanctioning gay marriage.“Having Kim Davis in federal custody removes all doubt of the criminalization of Christianity in our country,” said former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee. “We must defend religious liberty and never surrender to judicial tyranny.”Huckabee is planning a rally on Davis’ behalf next week in Kentucky. Other Republican reactions:Ted Cruz, in a written statement, said “those who are persecuting Kim Davis believe that Christians should not serve in public office. That is the consequence of their position. Or, if Christians do serve in pubic office, they must disregard their religious faith — or be sent to jail.”Bobby Jindal, speaking in The Huffington Post, said that “we are seeing government today discriminate against whether it’s clerks, florists, musicians or others. I think that’s wrong. We knew this was coming—Ted Cruz grandstanding, claiming that end times are upon America because a public official is being asked to do her job.“Those who are persecuting Kim Davis believe that Christians should not serve in public office. [...] Or, if Christians do serve in public office, they must disregard their religious faith–or be sent to jail."No, to both the first and the second. They're totally free to observe their religious faith whether they are a public office holder or not. They just can't do it on the clock, on the taxpayer's dime—not when God tells them not do their job.More from Cruz:“Today, judicial lawlessness crossed into judicial tyranny. As Kim Davis was dragged out of a federal courtroom to a local jail cell for refusing to violate her religious beliefs about sexuality and marriage, a group of LGBT activists chanted out their response. Seeing Davis sent to jail for an ideological crime, in a capricious decision that ignores the First Amendment, they shouted: "Love won! Love won!" With that, the first hints of twilight gathered over America's religious liberty as a dark day of Christian persecution dawns in our nation. "Having Kim Davis in federal custody removes all doubt of the criminalization of Christianity in our country," Mike Huckabee said. Ted Cruz agreed, ""Those who are persecuting Kim Davis believe that Christians should not serve in public office."It actually goes further than that. Homosexual activist extremists have never been coy about their desire to use the power of the state to legitimize their lifestyle choice. Having won that, they want to see Christians - and those of any other faith who disagree with their agenda - drien out of every segment of American society: fired from corporate board rooms, demoted in the military, cut loose from fire departments, and forced to close any business they may run. But Davis' arrest on Thursday - for "contempt of court" by U.S. District Judge David Bunning, a Republican appointee - raises the ante. For the first time, a Christian who refuses to participate in the gay "marriage" ceremony has been sent to jail for her beliefs. Forget the fact that Davis, as an elected official - unlike Bunning, or the Supreme Court for that matter - may better reflect the views of her Kentucky constituents than the policy positions of GLAAD. She, and all faithful Christians, must be taught a lesson. Davis will serve as the example that one simply does not stand up to the world's most powerful, aggressive, politically influential "persecuted minority."It should come as little surprise that Hillary Clinton supports The Man and the mob. She retweeted a news story of Davis' arrest with the message: "Marriage equality is the law of the land. Officials should be held to their duty to uphold the law—end of story."Of course, it was not that long ago that Hillary and her cohorts flooded the media with the message that the law doesn't matter, especially if it involves sexuality and a courthouse. Suddenly, she has morphed into the George Wallace/"law and order" candidate of 2016.The Obama administration also found the imprisonment of intellectual dissidents to be "appropriate," since - in the words of White House press secretary Josh Earnest - "the principle of the rule of law is central to our democracy."The rule of law apparently does not apply to the Obama administration's refusal to defend the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), his multiple grants of executive amnesty to illegal aliens covered by the never-passed DREAM Act, his appointment of "recess" appointees when Congress was not actually in recess, or his even his numerous actions to ignore the wording of his own ObamaCare law. Obama can be a serially lawless president, and that's fine. But a Christian refuses to personally participate in a union that Barack Obama said he opposed when he ran for president in 2008? Off with her head! The politics, though they sometimes provide a moment's satisfaction, can obscure the deeper moral and spiritual aspects of this shift.The United States has entered a new era of heresy hunting and witch burning . In today's PC wars, Christians will be the sacrificial lambs offered to satisfy the mob, hauled off to the hoosegow just as their forefathers in the faith were taken to the Coliseum to keep pagan Romans happy.Our sliding nation has already reached a point where Americans celebrate their fellow citizens being taken away in chains for believing their faith. "Our" government is not merely complicit but its chief enforcer - and sadly, it is a bipartisan undertaking.When Christians begin to be hauled off to the hoosegow for refusing to participate in sin, can the nation be far from that time Christ warned about: "the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service" (John 16:2)?
