Op-Ed-With a convert’s zeal, PM takes a precarious perch among global elite in Glasgow-Bennett may feel his trip to the climate conference was an unmitigated success, but there are potential dangers in getting too chummy with the rich and famous-By Lazar Berman    Today, 2:09 pm

Even before passing a budget that was Israel’s first in over three years, Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and his advisers left the climate summit in Glasgow last week feeling pleased with their trip, and with good reason. The premier enjoyed a VIP dinner reception at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery, where he exchanged views about the importance of fighting climate change with US President Joe Biden and UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, and had a conversation with Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge about the importance of enlisting his country’s youth in the effort. At the COP26 climate conference itself, Bennett met a series of world leaders, presenting himself as a techno-optimist with great faith in the potential for innovation to solve the world’s pressing problems. An adviser called the meetings a “diplomatic tsunami in the best way, rains of blessing.”In fact, Bennett was something of a star, with world leaders seeking him out for advice on COVID-19 boosters and lockdowns.Perhaps the most exciting meeting was with billionaire philanthropist and clean energy investor Bill Gates. Bennett seemed especially delighted as Gates spoke about harnessing Israel’s innovative spirit for clean energy and even referred to him as a fellow entrepreneur. In all, Bennett’s shrewd decision to leverage Israel’s success in fighting the coronavirus to frame it as a country that can come up with solutions for another global challenge seemed to pay off.But amid the self-congratulation and back-slapping, danger lurks for the prime minister.A conference like COP26, and his newfound zeal for the climate movement in general, hold significant risks for Bennett, and he may need to pay them close attention before continuing on the road he’s embarked upon.Good COP, Bad COP-However important it was for Israel’s leader to be at the event — and it certainly would not have looked good if he had stayed away — the optics of COP26 were uncomfortable, even beyond Energy Minister Karine Elharrar being kept out of the first day’s session due to a lack of wheelchair access.Last Sunday, the same day Bennett and his team took off in a charter flight for Glasgow, Israeli consumers were hit with a tax that doubled the price of disposable plastic cutlery and dishes in an attempt to wean the country off of plastic waste. It will likely affect disproportionately the ultra-Orthodox, who have large families and less money to spend on appliances like dishwashers.More significantly, while Bennett was in Scotland, fuel prices in Israel reached a three-year high, causing a steady rise in food prices. Israelis are being spared from the far more drastic spike in energy prices, and the potential blackouts that Europe could face over the winter, thanks to Israel’s natural gas — a fossil fuel — production offshore, and the fact that Israel relies on renewables far less than Europe does.At the Sunday night VIP welcome event hosted by Prince Charles, the conspicuously unmasked world leaders and royals clutched their drinks and conversed amiably, while staff and waiters hovered in the background with masks firmly in place. While Bennett and other world leaders pledged to cut carbon emissions and warned of an impending climate emergency, they were joined by CEOs and movie stars who descended on the climate summit in hundreds of private jets. Once in Scotland, their convoys — some numbering dozens of vehicles — emitted even more CO2 into the atmosphere. The Israeli team was late in committing to the conference, and was forced to find hotel rooms in Edinburgh, some 47 miles away. Twice a day, Bennett’s motorcade of around ten vehicles — plus local police vans and motorcycles — made the trip between the two Scottish cities. On top of the very intensive use of fossil fuels to get to Scotland and to move around within the country, the trip wasn’t especially environmentally friendly on the Israel end either. There was no directive from the prime minister for his staff to take public transportation to and from the airport, and they arrived in private cars and taxis. There is no question that logistics were made far more convenient by traveling using non-environmentally friendly means of transportation. But using fossil fuels is more convenient not only for billionaires and government officials. Israelis want to get to work as painlessly as possible, and have a deep love of flying abroad to see the world. If this government begins asking — or trying to force — Israelis to spend more time on buses and less time on vacation abroad for the environment’s sake, they may start by looking at the choices made by the political and economic elite and asking some difficult questions.A modern religion-Bennett, Israel’s first Orthodox prime minister, knows how powerful man’s religious impulse can be. Though many young people across the West are turning away from formal religion, there is still a powerful pull toward movements that guide their behavior through immutable moral laws, connect them to ostensible strangers, and give meaning to their actions by casting them as part of an effort to save humanity.“If a religion is a system of human norms and values that is founded on belief in a superhuman order, then Soviet Communism was no less a religion than Islam,” writes Yuval Noah Harari in “Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind.” He lists liberalism, capitalism, nationalism, and Nazism as other examples of “new, natural-law religions” that have replaced traditional religions. The modern climate movement can be added to that list. Like many God-centered faiths, it divides the world into the virtuous and sinners, preaches an apocalyptic vision of the end of humanity that the virtuous are trying to prevent, and doesn’t have any room for heretics. It even has its prophets, most prominently Greta Thunberg, the Swedish teen who has become the face of the climate movement with her thundering diatribes against world leaders.Spending the last two weeks in a series of briefings about the climate, Bennett and his team seem to be bona fide converts to the climate movement. But that zeal might be blinding them to the excesses of a vast movement that seeks to restructure the global economy, and of companies vying for a piece of a multi-trillion dollar pie.The prime minister and his team would be well served to take a critical look at a movement that has attracted as many profiteers, snake-oil salesmen, and anti-capitalists as any other high-stakes global effort. While many of the experts they come across are entirely sincere and well-meaning, Bennett’s staff could be pulled in directions that run against Israel’s national needs and his own political interests if they are not on the lookout. From COVID to climate-Bennett wants to make Israel’s forests and rivers less polluted, and intends to harness Israelis’ creativity and experience to lead the world toward a cleaner future. It’s an admirable goal that Israelis from across the political spectrum can get behind. But in his Glasgow trip, there were signs that, amid the celebrities and talk of last chances for the globe, Bennett was being nudged away from who he has been in his career until this point.Even as prime minister, he has maintained a man-of-the-people appeal, on full display when he was stuck with his entourage in Washington DC over Shabbat in August and regaled the gathered Israelis with words of Torah before spending a half-hour conversing with the journalists in the dining room. Hobnobbing with billionaires and royals who tsk-tsk ordinary working families for their wasteful ways is a marked departure from that persona.Similarly on COVID, Bennett proved himself a pragmatic leader who understands that his job is to balance competing interests and expert advice to forge a prudent path forward for Israel. He stared down health experts pushing for a lockdown and kept the country’s stores and schools open.Bennett wants to join the climate fight and reach net-zero by 2050, but he also wants to invest heavily in the Israel Defense Forces’ ability to pose a credible threat to Iran’s nuclear program, to continue growing Israel’s economy, and to fill glaring gaps in the country’s health and education systems. To reach those important goals, it will take the sagacious Bennett who has kept his unwieldy coalition together and the economy moving forward, not a jet-setting celebrity who fits in a bit too well with the world’s elite.

Axios-Climate shuffles superpowers-Zachary Basu-Sun, November 7, 2021, 7:30 AM

Drought, rising sea levels and melting ice caps are transforming the geopolitical map at the same time China's rise and revanchist Russia are testing the limits of American power.Driving the news: These dynamics, outlined in the first-ever National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) on climate change, released last month, played out this past week at the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow. President Biden rebuked China's Xi Jinping for failing to show up or present new commitments.Stay on top of the latest market trends and economic insights with Axios Markets. Subscribe for free. Why it matters: U.S. intelligence assessments show climate change is threatening military assets and opening new fronts in the great-power competition defining the 21st century.Biden has sought to place the "existential threat" of climate change squarely at the center of his national security policy, while at the same time casting China as the "biggest geopolitical challenge" facing the U.S.Those two priorities are inextricably linked: China is the world's largest source of carbon emissions, and its cooperation is critical to preventing some of the worst effects of global warming.Details: The NIE, which was mandated in Biden's first week in office, lays out three main risks to U.S. national security interests through 2040. 1. Geopolitical tensions will intensify as countries debate who bears responsibility to act — and who is not doing enough to combat climate change.Chinese officials have refused to agree to U.S. requests on climate until the Biden administration drops its rhetoric on Beijing's human rights abuses and aggression toward Taiwan. Some Chinese officials also point to the fact that industrialized countries have far higher cumulative emissions, and have accused the U.S. of politicizing the climate agenda to depress China's economic growth.  2. The global map itself is physically changing, establishing new frontiers for competition and exacerbating cross-border flashpoints.Melting sea ice in the Arctic will create new shipping routes, free up oil and mineral resources, and pave the way for greater economic competition. The risk of military confrontation or miscalculation will also grow, as the U.S. and China seek to bolster their presence in a region dominated by Russia. In the Indo-Pacific, which the Biden administration has identified as the new global center of strategic rivalry, sea-level rise and more frequent extreme events will put key military assets at risk, the Pentagon said in a new climate risk analysis.Growing water and resource scarcity could turn China's simmering tensions with India — another burgeoning global power and a key partner to the U.S. — into an outright conflict.  3. The effects of the climate crisis will be felt most acutely in developing countries, which will depend on humanitarian assistance and foreign investment to bolster their resilience.China already has a strong foothold in many sub-Saharan African and Asian countries, and continues to grow its influence through the Belt and Road infrastructure initiative. The bottom line: Addressing climate change while staying competitive with strategic rivals is not a zero-sum game, says John Conger, a former senior Pentagon official who oversaw energy installations and the environment during the Obama administration. He equated it to a chess match in which players sitting across from each other must navigate a changing board."If you start losing or gaining squares, that is part of the whole picture," Conger told Axios. "And they're not immune from any of this."More from Axios: Sign up to get the latest market trends with Axios Markets.

In Las Vegas, Jewish Republican confab weighs one more roll of the dice on Trump-Speakers point to victorious Virginia race where GOP candidate kept ex-president at arm’s length, but also note support for Trump’s Israel policies make him difficult to ignore-By Jacob Magid-8 November 2021, 1:25 am

LAS VEGAS — The Republican Jewish Coalition’s annual leadership conference this weekend could not have come at a better time, as far as its organizers were concerned.“After Tuesday, do you feel pretty good about things?” Senator Lindsey Graham asked the crowd of roughly 700 attendees, evoking an eruption of cheers that filled the Venetian Resort ballroom in Las Vegas on Saturday evening. The surprise victory of the GOP’s candidate for governor in Virginia, Glenn Youngkin, along with a wave of strong performances by other Republican candidates in last week’s elections has the party confident that these are signs of things to come, with the 2022 midterms on the horizon. But it was the way Youngkin defeated the Democratic incumbent that grabbed the attention of many RJC members, who could be heard throughout the conference debating how best to move forward after losing both Congress and the White House in 2020.Youngkin ran on many of former president Donald Trump’s policies but avoided having the Republican party leader join him on the campaign trail. He called for investigating unproven claims of voter fraud in the previous presidential election, while also asserting that US President Joe Biden’s victory over Trump was legitimate. The careful dance Youngkin played with the former president — keeping Trump at an arms-length, while being sure not to anger him — is what RJC leaders are hoping to replicate in the years ahead. But views on the matter appeared more divided among many of the attendees at the Vegas conference, with some happy to forget about Trump, while others were sure that his continued presence represents the key to Republican victories in 2022 and 2024.Kissing the ring-There were a variety of takes among the conference headliners — RJC household names and rising Republican stars alike —  relating to Trump, and each of them was warmly received by the conservative crowd, indicating that there may not be one favored way of going about it.Every speaker made a point of praising Trump’s record on Israel, namely his decisions to move the US embassy to Jerusalem, recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights and withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal. But some didn’t stop there.“It was the greatest honor of my life, to serve as Vice President with President Donald Trump,” said Mike Pence, who was one of the more effusive speakers in his remarks about the former president.Former Israeli ambassador to the US Ron Dermer argued that Trump should’ve won a Nobel Peace Prize for his administration’s brokering of the Abraham Accords — the series of normalization agreements between Israel and Arab states — an argument that was positively received by the cheering crowd.“Israel had the best friend in the White House since the establishment of the Jewish state,” Graham said of the former Republican president. But the GOP Senator also offered somewhat of a caveat, telling the crowd, “I tried to get him to talk about his presidency in terms of policy,” as if to say that Trump was mistakenly focusing on other issues.Senator Ted Cruz took a similar approach in his remarks on Friday evening, stating that Trump “demonstrated extraordinary courage” in moving the US embassy and withdrawing from the Iran deal. But in both cases, he suggested that the president made those decisions because Cruz “engaged actively, directly and repeatedly” with Trump, who he claimed was apparently in need of the senator’s guidance.Trump’s one-time UN ambassador Nikki Haley, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu, South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem and Senate Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy each pointedly praised Trump, while focusing largely on their own personal records, particularly on domestic issues.“Everybody seems to think that the way to appeal to the Jewish vote is to talk about Israel, Israel, Israel,” RJC Executive Director Matt Brooks told reporters in a Saturday briefing.“The reality is the Jewish community, like the mainstream community, cares about a lot of different things. They care about jobs, the economy and certainly education,” said Brooks.“So we’ve been talking about education as a Jewish value — whether it be school choice or parental involvement. We know that this issue has resonated with Jewish voters for a long time,” he said, turning to one of the most emphasized issues at the conference — and Youngkin’s successful campaign — where attendees booed at mentions of critical race theory and the shuttering of schools during the pandemic.Highlights from this morning @RJC Annual Leadership Meeting in Las Vegas, featuring FL Governor @RonDeSantisFL, NJ Governor @GovChristie, Ambassador @NikkiHaley, and @GOPLeader Kevin McCarthy! #RJCinVegas pic.twitter.com/uBDg3apYfK— RJC (@RJC) November 7, 2021-Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie also focused on domestic affairs in his Saturday remarks, but he also made a point in going further than any other candidate in repudiating Trump, who continues to call into question the results of the 2020 election.“We can no longer talk about the past and past elections. No matter where you stand on that election, it is over. Every minute that we spend talking about 2020, all the wasted time that we’re there, Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer are laying ruin to this country. We better… take our eyes off the rear-view mirror and start looking through the windshield,” he said to tepid applause from large parts of the crowd. The swipe did not impress Boris Epshteyn, Trump’s former special assistant who was also in the audience on Saturday.“We cannot move forward in this country until we get to the bottom of what happened in the 2020 election,” he told The Times of Israel. “We need forensic audits and canvasses all across the country. I am confident that those audits will prove that President Trump won.”“Governor Christie is absolutely entitled to his opinion, but it does not represent the current view of a huge majority of the Republican Party,” he added.‘It’s not about Trump’The RJC leadership appeared to view things differently though.Trump was invited to address the conference, but he did so virtually, sending a pre-recorded address. But the cameo was not advertised by the RJC ahead of time like every one of the other speakers, in what appeared to have been a decision aimed at downplaying the appearance.“I think the elections Tuesday night in Virginia, New Jersey on Long Island and across the country showed that it’s about the here and now, and that it’s not about President Trump or anybody else,” said RJC Board Member Ari Fleischer, a former White House Press Secretary for George W. Bush.At the same time, he pushed back against the notion that avoiding talk of Trump was unique to the upcoming midterm, pointing to the 2009 election “when people didn’t want Bush coming to their events.”“I think you’re going to see a lot of candidates look to the Youngkin model, not just in avoiding Trump, but in messaging that brings voters back home,” Brooks told JTA ahead of the conference. He also pushed back against the desire to frame the conference through a Trump lens.“The real stories here are the inroads we’re making with minorities, like the Jewish community, African American community, Hispanic community and the success we’re having bringing suburban women back into the fold,” he said.According to Brooks, “one of the important takeaways of New Jersey and in Virginia is that you need to be the ‘you candidate,'” as opposed to a pro-or-anti-Trump candidate. He can have it,” Hockstedler told ToI. “We can’t keep screaming conspiracy theories and thinking that we’re going to win.”Both Garza and Hockstedler acknowledged that on the issues relating to Israel, there is little that differentiates the various Republican candidates, but while the former wanted to emulate the president, the latter talked about “returning civility to the political discourse.”Hockstedler was critical of the “Let’s go Brandon” (code for “F**k Joe Biden) chants that were led by many of the student attendees at various points throughout the conference.Highlights from last night's @RJC Leadership Meeting in Las Vegas featuring Senator @ScottforFlorida, Governor @ChrisSununu, Governor @KristiNoem, and Senator @tedcruz! #RJCinVegas pic.twitter.com/q7cthgHAow — RJC (@RJC) November 6, 2021-The moderate Republican said a majority of people he spoke with felt similarly to him about the need to distance the party from the former president. One RJC member and longtime-Republican donor agreed.“A lot of people don’t want to talk about Trump and wish he would just go away, but they’re afraid of saying so publicly,” the member said on condition of anonymity.Longtime RJC member Jarrow Rogovin felt differently.“I wouldn’t call it moving away from Trump because the issues we want to focus on are Trump’s issues,” he said.At the same time, Rogovin — who characterized the previous election as having been “stolen” — said Republicans would have a better chance of winning in 2024 if they ran another candidate like DeSantis instead of Trump.“It’s a practical understanding of what it takes to win,” he said.

Pre-IDF program seeking young women to train in cybersecurity skills-Military school under C4I and Cyber Defense Directorate offers specialized preparatory program for cyber defense, DevOps courses-NOV 7,21-By Ricky Ben-David-Today, 7:00 pm

The Israel Defense Forces is seeking to attract more young women to a pre-enlistment program that focuses on cybersecurity training that they can use during their military service — and when they enter the job force in the years to come. The pre-military program is under the purview of the IDF’s C4I and Cyber Defense Directorate, a branch responsible for communications and technology-related activities of IDF forces in the field and cybersecurity defense in the military. (C4I stands for command, control, communications, computers, and intelligence). The directorate answers to the Chief of Staff and works closely with the Operations Directorate, a branch tasked with planning the use of military force. The C4I Directorate operates the Military School for Computer Science and Cyber Defense, which trains thousands of soldiers every year for various roles in the Air Force, Navy, and ground forces. The school offers training programs such as software development, data analytics, DevOps (software development combined with IT operations), and cyber defense, and is headed by Lieutenant Colonel Liat Litvak who took up the role this summer.Litvak told The Times of Israel in a recent interview that these programs have historically drawn fewer young women than men, and the school is working to change this with a specialized pre-military program, or mechina in Hebrew.“We have ‘open days’ where anyone can come in, get more information, sit down for a test, and if they pass, they can become candidates for the school. The test is for everyone and they don’t need any prior experience but fewer women usually come in for it,” she explained, which is why the school embarked on forming the preparatory mechina.“We want to reach people of all backgrounds, educational and socioeconomic, and not just those who have computer science knowledge,” said Litvak.Following a screening exam that tests for cognitive and mathematical abilities, the female candidates who are accepted begin the seven-week preparatory program during which they are taught skills such as the basics of programming, software development, and principles of cyber defense, as well as strategies like how to conduct advanced research and set professional and personal goals. There’s also an emphasis on personalized approaches and weekly sit-downs with instructors who closely follow the students’ progress and help them devise improvement plans.“It is a huge learning experience for them where we provide them with the tools to take on the more rigorous and intense courses offered by the school,” Litvak said. The 15-week cyber defense course, for example, where men and women study together, teaches more in-depth cybersecurity defense practices and skills as the students prepare for their army service. “There are cyber games and hackathons, and simulations on defending a smart city, for example, and all types of related activities,” Litvak saiD-Currently, some 80 young women are enrolled in the 15-week preparatory program, offered in central and southern Israel.Private L, who participated in the mechina and went on to complete a DevOps course, told The Times of Israel that the experience set her on a path she hadn’t previously realized could be possible.A group of young women participate in a pre-military program to train them in software development and cybersecurity skills for their army service. (IDF)“When I found out about the mechina, I didn’t know too much about it at first, but I was certainly happy for the opportunity to prove myself and to get into the pre-military courses I was not admitted to through traditional screening. The idea of ??taking a group of girls and getting the best out of them in the field of computers spoke to me very much and it gave me the motivation to continue down the road,” said Private L, whose full name can’t be disclosed as her military role is classified. She said the preparatory program was a challenging but enriching experience. “I learned so much professionally and about the army in general. In addition, the program included various fascinating social activities such as workshops, lectures on female empowerment, personal development and more. Almost a year after graduating from the mechina, I can say that the skills I acquired still serve me in my military service today.”L said the mechina gave her the opportunity to enlist in her preferred position in the IDF and gave her the required skills, such as independent learning and research, to do well.Litvak said that the school’s measure for success is to “see more women go on to serve in key roles in the IDF” as well as in the tech industry in the future. The initial results are encouraging. “In the last cyber defense course, 50 percent more women than men completed the program,” Litvak said, adding that she now sees about 40 percent more girls in the overall preparatory programs.-Israel’s cybersecurity sector-Israel is a leading player in the global cybersecurity industry, with many entrepreneurs in the field hailing from elite technological and intelligence units in the IDF.The sector has drawn massive investments and interest in the past decade. Israel accounts for the second-largest number of cybersecurity deals globally, behind the US and ahead of the UK, according to a 2018 report New York data firm CB Insights. In the first half of 2021 alone, Israeli cybersecurity companies raised $3.4 billion in 50 deals and seven of them became unicorns, or private companies valued at over $1 billion, the Israel National Cyber Directorate said in July. The half-year figure accounted for 41% of the total funds raised by cybersecurity firms worldwide and was three times the amount raised in the same period a year earlier, the data showed.More than a third of worldwide cybersecurity unicorns are Israelis, according to the report, with some 13 in Israel out of 30-33 globally, the directorate said.Shoshanna Solomon contributed to this report.

Associated Press-Mourning starts as Houston officials probe concert deaths-JUAN A. LOZANO and JAMIE STENGLE-Sun, November 7, 2021, 1:00 AM

HOUSTON (AP) — Investigators Sunday worked to determine how eight people died in a crush of fans at a Houston music festival, as families mourned the dead and concertgoers recounted the horror and confusion of being trapped in the crowd.Authorities planned to use videos, witness interviews and a review of concert procedures to figure out what went wrong Friday night during a performance by rapper Travis Scott. The tragedy unfolded when the crowd rushed the stage, squeezing people so tightly they couldn't breathe.Billy Nasser, 24, who had traveled from Indianapolis to attend the concert, said about 15 minutes into Scott’s set, things got “really crazy” and people began crushing one another. He said he “was picking people up and trying to drag them out.”Nasser said he found a concertgoer on the ground.“I picked him up. People were stepping on him. People were like stomping, and I picked his head up and I looked at his eyes, and his eyes were just white, rolled back to the back of his head,” he said.Over the weekend, a makeshift memorial of flowers, votive candles, condolence notes and T-shirts took shape outside at NRG Park.Michael Suarez, 26, visited the growing memorial after the concert.”It’s very devastating. No one wants to see or hear people dying at a festival," Suarez said. "We were here to have a good time — a great time — and it’s devastating to hear someone lost their lives.”The dead, according to friends and family members, included a 14-year-old high school student; a 16-year-old girl who loved dancing; and a 21-year-old engineering student at the University of Dayton. The youngest was 14, the oldest 27.Houston officials did not immediately release the victims' names or the cause of death, but family and friends began to name their loved ones and tell their stories Sunday.Thirteen people remained hospitalized Sunday. Their conditions were not disclosed. Over 300 people were treated at a field hospital at the concert.City officials said they were in the early stages of investigating what caused the pandemonium at the sold-out Astroworld festival, an event founded by Scott. About 50,000 people were there.Authorities said that among other things, they will look at how the area around the stage was designed.Julio Patino, of Naperville, Illinois, who was in London on business when he got a middle-of-the-night call informing him his 21-year-old son Franco was dead, said he had a lot of questions about what happened.“These concerts should be controlled," Patino said. “If they don’t know how to do that, they should have canceled the concert right then, when they noticed there was an overcrowd.” He added: “They should not wait until they see people laying down on the floor, lifeless.”Steven Adelman, vice president of the industry group Event Safety Alliance, which was formed after the collapse of a stage at the Indiana State Fair in 2011 killed seven people, helped write industry guidelines widely used today. He said investigators will examine the design of the safety barriers and whether they correctly directed crowds or contributed to the crush of spectators. He said, too, that authorities will look at whether something incited the crowd besides Scott taking the stage.Adelman said another question is whether there was enough security there, noting there is a nationwide shortage of people willing to take low-wage, part-time security gigs.“Security obviously was unable to stop people. Optically, that’s really bad-looking,” he said. “But as for what it tells us, it’s too early to say.”Contemporary Services Corp., headquartered in Los Angeles, was responsible for security staff at the festival, according to county records in Texas. Representatives for the company — which advertises online as being “recognized worldwide as the pioneer, expert and only employee owned company in the crowd management field” — did not immediately respond to emails and phone messages seeking comment.Houston police and fire department officials said their investigation will include reviewing video taken by concert promoter Live Nation, as well as dozens of clips from people at the show.Officials also planned to review the event’s security plan and various permits issued to organizers to see whether they were properly followed. In addition, investigators planned to speak with Live Nation representatives, Scott and concertgoers.Izabella Ramirez of Texas City was celebrating her 21st birthday and said that once Scott came on stage, no one could move.“Everybody was squishing in, and people were trying to move themselves to the front. You couldn’t even lift up your arms,” Ramirez said.Ramirez said a security guard pulled her over the barricade, while her date, Jason Rodriguez, lifted her up.“Everyone was yelling for different things. They were either yelling for Travis or they were yelling for help,” Rodriguez said.On video posted to social media, Scott could be seen stopping the concert at one point and asking for aid for someone in the audience: “Security, somebody help real quick.”There is a long history of similar catastrophes at concerts, sporting events and even religious events. In 1979, 11 people were killed as thousands of fans tried to get into Cincinnati's Riverfront Coliseum to see a concert by The Who. Other past crowd catastrophes include the deaths of 97 people at a soccer match in Hillsborough Stadium in 1989 in Sheffield, England, and numerous disasters connected with the annual hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia.Experts who have studied deaths caused by crowd surges say they are often a result of too many people packed into too small a space. Also Sunday, at least two of the first of many expected lawsuits were filed on behalf of a man injured in the crush of people in state court in Houston. Attorneys for Manuel Souza sued Scott, Live Nation and others, saying they were responsible. Another lawsuit was filed on behalf of Noah Gutierrez by Ben Crump, a civil rights lawyer who has represented the families of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and other Black people killed by police. In a tweet posted Saturday, Scott said he was “absolutely devastated by what took place." He pledged to work “together with the Houston community to heal and support the families in need.”___Associated Press writers Jake Bleiberg in Dallas; Randall Chase in Dover, Delaware; Kristin M. Hall in Nashville and Bob Christie in New Bloomfield, Pennsylvania, contributed to this report.___A previous version of this story was corrected to show Travis Scott is 30, not 29.

Associated Press-Iran says has enriched over 210 kilograms of uranium to 20%-Fri, November 5, 2021, 5:42 AM

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran’s atomic agency said Friday that its stockpile of 20% enriched uranium has reached over 210 kilograms (463 pounds), the latest defiant move ahead of upcoming nuclear talks with the West. The figure, attributed to agency spokesman Behrouz Kamalvan, was carried in a report by the semi-official Tasnim and Fars news agencies.Under the historic 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and the World Powers, Iran was not meant to enrich uranium above 3.67 percent. Enriched uranium above 90 percent can be used for nuclear weapons. After months of delays, the European Union, Iran and the U.S. announced Wednesday that indirect talks to resuscitate the deal would resume on Nov. 29 in Vienna. The nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, or JCPOA, promises Iran economic incentives in exchange for limits on its nuclear program, and is meant to prevent Tehran from developing a nuclear bomb. Tehran insists its program is peaceful.Kamalvandi also said that so far his agency has also produced 25 kilograms of 60% enriched uranium, a level that only countries with nuclear weapons have the physical capabilities to produce. The U.S. unilaterally pulled out of the nuclear deal in 2018 under then-President Donald Trump, but Britain, France, Germany, China and Russia have tried to preserve the accord.Tehran’s strategy of deliberately violating the deal is seen as an attempt to put pressure particularly on Europe to provide it with incentives to offset crippling American sanctions re-imposed after the U.S. pullout. On Sept. 15, Iran’s nuclear chief Mohammad Eslami said Tehran removed surveillance cameras belonging to the United Nation’s nuclear watchdog because of unfulfilled commitments by other signatories of the nuclear deal.U.S. President Joe Biden and European leaders criticized Tehran last week for what it saw as accelerated and provocative nuclear steps as Iran continues to enrich uranium to a higher levels. With the talks in Vienna now stalled, Iran has breached limits set by the accord and is enriching small amounts of uranium to its closest-ever levels to weapons-grade purity as its stockpile continues to grow. Iran says its nuclear program is only for peaceful purposes

Iranian plot to attack Israelis, Jews said foiled in Africa-Five arrested in Ghana, Senegal and Tanzania on suspicion of planning attacks against tourists or businesspeople, after being trained in Lebanon, Channel 12 news reports-By TOI staff-NOV 7,21-Today, 10:26 pm.

Five people have been arrested in African countries over suspicions that they were planning on carrying out attacks against Israeli tourists or businesspeople on behalf of Iran, an Israeli television network reported Sunday. The five, who had been in Senegal, Tanzania, and Ghana, were recruited by Iran’s Quds Force expeditionary arm of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, according to the report from Channel 12 news, which did not attribute the information to a source. The five were arrested in the African countries by local intelligence, who were working off information obtained from “Western” spies, the channel said.According to intelligence information cited by the channel, the five were given special training and unspecified materials in Lebanon and then sent back to Africa with a cover story of being religious students, where they were given the mission of finding Jewish and Israeli targets to attack.Among the top targets were Israeli tourists on safari in Tanzania, the channel said. All five suspects were arrested before they could take any action, according to the report. It did not say when the arrests took place, but indicated they were still being questioned.Though the report credited the Israel’s Mossad spy agency with foiling the plot, its role in the affair was not mentioned. There was no immediate confirmation of the report from authorities in Israel or the three African countries. The channel said Iranian officials denied any allegations against it, calling them “baseless.”The report would appear to point to the latest chapter in an ongoing covert war between Israel and Iran, including a number of alleged plots on the African continent. In February, The New York Times reported that a cell of Iranian operatives in Ethiopia had been recruited for an attack on diplomats from the United Arab Emirates over its normalization with Israel. In September, Cypriot officials arrested an Azerbaijani national over suspicions that he was part of a plot to attack Israeli businessmen on the island. Israeli officials have described the planned attack as an Iranian operation.Iran’s attempts to attack Israeli or Jewish interests have stepped up since the killing of its nuclear program chief Mohsen Fakhrizadeh a year ago, which Tehran blames on Jerusalem.

Meretz MKs warn plan to double Jordan Valley settlers imperils coalition-Lawmakers Mossi Raz and Gaby Lasky tell Housing Minister Elkin his drive to boost settlements is ‘far’ from what their party can agree to-By TOI staff-OCT 7,21-Today, 11:53 pm

Two Meretz party lawmakers have warned Housing Minister Ze’ev Elkin that his plan to double the Israeli population in the Jordan Valley will rupture the fragile government coalition, Channel 13 reported Sunday.Elkin intends to seek government approval for a scheme to increase Israel’s presence in the strategic valley, the part of the West Bank and runs along the border with Jordan.MKs Mossi Raz and Gaby Lasky wrote to Elkin that “we can no longer remain silent.”“The strength of this government is the advancement of issues we can all agree. This decision is far from that,” they said. They called on Elkin to “immediately stop the plan” and not bring it for government approval. However, according to the station, though Elkin may not bring the plan to the cabinet in the coming weeks, or even months, he is determined to go ahead with it.Elkin announced in October a plan to double the number of homes in the Jordan Valley, in order to reach 3,000 families living in the area by 2026. Elkin said at the time that his ministry plans to invest NIS 224 million ($70 million) to build 1,500 new homes in 21 settlements in the area. Those homes have yet to be approved by the relevant authorities.Prime Minister Naftali Bennett leads a diverse coalition of left-wing, centrist and right-wing parties with deep ideological differences on some key issues, including Israel’s settlements in the West Bank. The coalition gained a measure of stability last week when it passed the state budget ahead of a deadline that would have triggered elections. However, with just 61 seats in the 120-seat Knesset, it has only the slimmest of majorities that can be removed by even a single MK. Meretz, the dovish party furthest to the left in the coalition, has six seats in the Knesset. Elkin is a member of the right-wing New Hope party that also has six seats.Last month, Israel advanced plans for over 3,000 new settlement homes in the West Bank, in the first such move by the new government which came to power in June. The move drew the harshest condemnation yet by the Biden administration which said it is “deeply concerned” over the development and repeated its opposition to settlement expansion.US Secretary of State Antony Blinken phoned Defense Minister Benny Gantz to voice similar objections regarding the scope and location of the settlement approvals, according to an Israeli official. At the time, Raz vowed that Meretz would stop that plan too.The Palestinians want the West Bank as territory for a future state and most countries consider Israel’s settlements there to be illegal.A controversial peace plan proposed under the Trump administration to solve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict allowed for Israel to annex key areas of the Jordan Valley. Though Israel embraced the plan, it was rejected outright by the Palestinians. The Biden administration sees the two-state solution as the answer to resolving the conflict.

Ethiopian-born MK claims report aims to stop rescue of Jews-Dozens of Ethiopians brought to Israel accused of scamming way onto airlift-Immigration Authority reportedly finds that 61 people rescued from war-torn region may have lied about Jewish roots, as security body claims no urgent need to rescue people-By TOI staff-8 November 2021, 1:00 am

Dozens of people smuggled in a secret operation from Ethiopia to Israel recently may have misrepresented their Jewish ancestry and exaggerated the level of danger they were in, according to reports Sunday. An investigation by the Immigration and Population Authority raised “serious doubts” regarding the vast majority of a group of 61 Ethiopians brought to Israel over the last several months, who may have been part of a conspiracy involving a man who immigrated from Ethiopia over 20 years ago, Haaretz reported.Members of the community involved in the effort denied the accusations, according to Channel 12 news, which also published an assessment from the National Security Council claiming that there was no urgency to airlift efforts.Pressure has ramped up on Israel in recent weeks to bring some thousands of members of Ethiopia’s Jewish community to Israel as an insurgency by Tigray rebels has intensified and neared the capital Addis Ababa. “We must continue to act bring them over to Israel quickly,” President Isaac Herzog said last week.Since fighting broke out a year ago, over 2,000 Ethiopian Jews have been brought to Israel in state-run operations, among them the group of  61 who needed ministers to sign off on their immigration because they are not part of the Jewish community but claimed only Jewish roots.Though the plan to spirit them to Israel was put together during the tenure of former prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, it was the cabinet of his successor Naftali Bennett that signed off on it, Haaretz reported. After being brought to Israel, the 61 were settled in an absorption center in Kibbutz Beit Alfa. But after some of them briefly put pictures online, suspicions were raised regarding their backgrounds and the information they had provided to Israeli authorities, leading immigration officials to order a more thorough investigation.“There are serious doubts regarding the petitioners’ relationship to Jewish ethnicity despite their affidavits,” a report from the Immigration and Population Authority reads, according to Haaretz.Members of the Jewish Ethiopian community hold up photographs of their relatives outside the Prime Minister’s Office in Jerusalem on November 25, 2020, during a demonstration demanding to bring thousands of their remaining brethren from Ethiopia to Israel. (Menahem Kahana/AFP)“Most of the petitioners did not come from a combat area as claimed and were not in life-threatening danger,” the report added, noting that they would not ordinarily have been able to immigrate to Israel.Authorities had only been able to confirm Jewish ancestry in four people from the group, a source told the paper. The probe found that the list of names compiled for rescue came from a man who had immigrated to Israel from Ethiopia in 1996. According to media reports, the group brought over include two people claiming to be his sons, his ex-wife, who is Christian, her husband and their children and a number of people he worked with in the past.“There’s a feeling that this was a conspiracy to take advantage of the system,” the investigation concludes.Ethiopian refugees who fled intense fighting in their homeland of Tigray, cook their meal in the border reception centre of Hamdiyet, in the eastern Sudanese state of Kasala, on November 14, 2020. (Ebrahim HAMID / AFP)However, sources told Haaretz that the group would not be sent back to Ethiopia no matter what the final conclusion is.There are thought to be 7,000 to 12,000 Ethiopian community members still waiting to come to Israel, many of whom live in the Tigray region, the heart of the conflict. Others, who left their villages years ago, eke out livings near the Jewish community centers in Gondar City and Addis Ababa. Many have been waiting decades to immigrate. But a document from the National Security Council dated November 7 and published by Channel 12 news claimed that some 10,000 people awaiting clarification of their status to be able to immigrate to Israel were in no immediate danger and that there was a “threat” of non-Jews slipping into Israel as economic refugees.Ethiopian government soldiers ride in the back of a truck on a road leading to Abi Adi, in the Tigray region of northern Ethiopia Tuesday, May 11, 2021. (AP Photo/Ben Curtis)-The memo also claimed that even talking about rescuing the groups could endanger them and suggested political pressure for an airlift was being manufactured.“It’s not certain there is any need to airlift those awaiting clarification at this time or in general. Bringing thousands of people awaiting clarification to Israel would be an unprecedented demographic mistake, and is unneeded and dangerous,” the document reads.Immigration and Absorption Minister Pnina Tamano-Shata, who is herself of Ethiopian extraction, said the document was “worthy of being tossed in the trash bin of Israeli history.”“This isn’t a security assessment but merely a political position paper from political actors trying to shut down the rescue of the remaining Ethiopian Jews,” she was quoted saying by Channel 12.She also accused the NSC of stepping out of its lane.A member of the Ethiopian Jewish community attends a religious service at the synagogue in the city of Gondar, Ethiopia, on October 27, 2020. (Eduardo Soteras/AFP)-While Ethiopian Jewish immigrants from the Beta Israel community are recognized as fully Jewish, immigrants from Ethiopia belonging to the smaller Falash Mura community are required to undergo Orthodox conversion after immigrating. The Falash Mura are Ethiopian Jews whose ancestors converted to Christianity, often under duress, generations ago. Some 30,000 of them have immigrated to Israel since 1997, according to the Prime Minister’s Office.Because the Interior Ministry does not consider the Falash Mura to be Jewish, they cannot immigrate under the Law of Return, and therefore must get special permission from the government to move to Israel.

First sexual assault complaint filed with police against leading LGBT activist-Five people have reportedly told cops they were assaulted by TV personality Gal Uchovsky, but only one has filed formal paperwork-By TOI staff-NOV 7,21-Today, 10:30 pm

A first formal complaint was filed with police Sunday against screenwriter and producer Gal Uchovsky, one of the most prominent LGBT rights activists in Israel, who has recently been accused by multiple men of sexual assault.Police last week opened an investigation into Uchovsky after the Kan public broadcaster published testimonies of two men who said that Uchovsky sexually assaulted them in recent years. Since then, a third person has also told the station he was assaulted by Uchovsky.Media reports did not identify the complainant or the exact nature of the accusations against the celebrity, which were filed with Tel Aviv police.According to Kan, so far five people have notified police of incidents regarding Uchovsky, including some in the past six months, but only one formal complaint has been filed. After the Kan exposé, which included allegations from two men, was broadcast Monday, Uchovsky, a popular TV personality, apologized and said he would be stepping down as president of IGY – Israel Gay Youth, a leading nonprofit organization serving LGBTQ youth in Israel.Writing on Facebook Tuesday, Uchovsky did not deny sexual interactions with the accusers, but said, “I’ve never tried to force myself on anyone, and I’ll take any polygraph test to prove it.”He stressed that he had “never, ever intended to hurt anyone.”On Saturday night, Kan said a third man had contacted the station. A holistic practitioner claimed Uchovsky assaulted him when being treated during a session 14 years ago. The man’s claims have been backed up with a lie detector test and a friend whom he confided in at the time of the alleged assault, according to the report. The man told the station that already during the first treatment he gave Uchovsky, the latter tried to touch him sexually.“I told him, ‘Stop, enough,'” said the man, who also claimed Uchovky slapped him on one occasion.“He made me financially dependent on him,” the man said. He explained he felt compelled to come forward after seeing the Kan report last week. All of the alleged victims spoke to Kan on condition of anonymity. The first of the anonymous members of the LGBTQ community claimed that Uchovsky assaulted him a year and a half ago, during a prearranged sexual encounter between them, during which the IGY chairman violated the boundaries the two had agreed upon previously. The complainant told Kan that he clearly stated his refusal to comply with the sexual advances, but that Uchovsky did not stop.A second complainant told the broadcaster that, several years ago, during a work meeting with Uchovsky, the activist suddenly “leaped at me and started kissing me.”“I tried to shove him away. He forced himself on me despite my objection, until he finished,” the second complainant recalled. In response to the report, Uchovsky said he was not aware that the first man had not consented and apologized “out of understanding and sensitivity.” He said he did not receive sufficient details to comment on the second testimony, but “once that’s the feeling, he also apologizes to the second complainant.”

IDF blacklists Palestinian rights groups, enabling Israel to act against them-Military’s designation means groups’ offices can be shuttered, members arrested; move comes despite ongoing international criticism-By Judah Ari Gross-NOV 7,21-Today, 5:29 pm

The Israel Defense Forces outlawed five Palestinian rights groups in the West Bank on Sunday, following a decision by Defense Minister Benny Gantz last month, despite international criticism against the move, the military said.A sixth group that was declared a terrorist organization by Gantz had already been banned by the IDF last year. With these official designations, the military was granted the power to shutter the organizations’ offices and arrest their members, among other moves. The IDF has been known to enforce such classifications at its discretion or, as some critics argue, arbitrarily. For instance, the Palestine Liberation Organization, the ruling party of the Palestinian Authority, is also officially banned, though the ban is largely ignored by the IDF.Israel maintains that the six newly blacklisted Palestinian organizations — Al-Haq, Addameer, Defense for Children International-Palestine, the Bisan Center for Research and Development, the Union of Palestinian Women’s Committees and the Union of Agricultural Work Committees — serve as fronts for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine terror group, which the groups have repeatedly denied and which has been questioned by their European and international funders.Gantz’s designation of the groups as terrorist organizations last month had comparatively little immediate impact, as they operate within the West Bank and are thus officially outside of Israel’s jurisdiction. Still, the terrorist classification has caused some of the groups’ funders to pull their financial support out of concern that they could be targeted with banking sanctions. On Sunday, the head of the IDF Central Command, who has formal legal authority over the West Bank as military governor of the area, officially deemed five of the groups — Al-Haq, Addameer, Defense for Children International-Palestine, the Bisan Center for Research and Development and the Union of Palestinian Women’s Committees — “unauthorized organizations,” the equivalent of terrorist organizations in military legal parlance. The Union of Agricultural Work Committees had already been outlawed in the West Bank last January.Central Command chief Maj. Gen. Yehuda Fuchs decided to outlaw the groups “after he was presented with copious, varied and reliable information that indicates that these organizations represented a wing of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine terror group,” the military said in a statement.Israel’s decision to outlaw the six groups has been questioned by the United States and European allies and criticized by the United Nations and other international organizations, who have decried it as an attack on Palestinian civil society.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea has conducted artillery firing exercises to bolster its defense capability, state media reported Sunday, its latest weapons test as Pyongyang continues to pressure Washington and Seoul to abandon what it calls their hostile policy. An artillery firing competition among mechanized units was held on Saturday, with senior government and military officials present, the official Korean Central News Agency reported.Leader Kim Jong Un was not mentioned in the report, suggesting he did not observe the training. He supervised a similar artillery firing drill last year. This year’s drills were designed to inspect the mechanized units’ progress in their mobile combat capabilities and to further intensify competitive training throughout the North’s military, KCNA said.Since September, North Korea has test-launched a series of newly developed missiles, including nuclear-capable weapons that place U.S. allies South Korea and Japan within striking distance. Some experts say North Korea wants its rivals to accept it as a nuclear power state and work to ease international sanctions on the country. The North's artillery tests draw less outside attention than its missile tests, particularly ballistic weapons launches that are banned by multiple U.N. Security Council resolutions. But its long-range artillery pieces deployed near the border with South Korea pose a serious threat to the South's populous metropolitan region and other areas, experts say.U.S.-led talks aimed at ending North Korea’s nuclear program collapsed in early 2019 amid bickering over the sanctions. U.S. officials have recently offered a resumption of talks with North Korea without any preconditions. The North said it won't return to the talks unless the United States first abandons what Pyongyang calls its hostile policy, an apparent reference to the sanctions and regular military drills between Washington and Seoul.

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran’s military began its annual war games in a coastal area of the Gulf of Oman, state TV reported Sunday, less than a month before upcoming nuclear talks with the West. The report said navy and air force units as well as ground forces were participating in a more than 1 million square-kilometer (386,100 square-mile) area east of the strategic Strait of Hormuz.Nearly 20% of all oil shipping passes through the strait to the Gulf of Oman and Indian Ocean. The drill comes amid heightened tensions between Iran and the U.S. in the wake of former President Donald Trump’s unilateral withdrawal of America from Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal with world powers.State TV said brigades including commandos and airborne infantry deployed for the annual exercise. Fighter jets, helicopters, military transport aircraft, submarines and drones were also expected to take part in the drill. It wasn't immediately clear how long the exercise would last.Dubbed “Zolfaghar-1400,” the war games are aimed at “improving readiness in confronting foreign threats and any possible invasion," state TV said.U.S. officials said last week that Iran had seized a Vietnamese-flagged oil tanker in the Gulf of Oman last month and was still holding the vessel in its port.Iran offered conflicting accounts of what happened, claiming that elite Revolutionary Guard commandos had thwarted a U.S. seizure of a tanker carrying Iranian oil in the Gulf of Oman and freed the vessel. It aired dramatic footage on state television but did not further explain the incident. The nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, or JCPOA, promises Iran economic incentives in exchange for limits on its nuclear program, and is meant to prevent Tehran from developing a nuclear bomb. After the U.S. withdrew from the deal in 2018 and restored sanctions on Iran, the Islamic Republic gradually — and publicly — abandoned the deal’s limits on its nuclear development.Iran says its stockpile of 20% enriched uranium has reached over 210 kilograms (463 pounds), the latest defiant move ahead of upcoming nuclear talks with the West.Under the historic nuclear deal, Iran was prohibited from enriching uranium above 3.67%. Enriched uranium above 90% can be used for nuclear weapons, though Tehran insists its nuclear program is peaceful. After months of delays, the European Union, Iran and the U.S. announced last week that indirect talks to resuscitate the deal would resume Nov. 29 in Vienna.

16 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.17 Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.

Palestinians pan Israel for opposing US consulate in Jerusalem-PA Foreign Ministry says East Jerusalem is capital of Palestine and Israelis can’t veto Washington’s decision, but State Dept has acknowledged Israel’s okay is required-By AP and TOI staff    7 November 2021, 4:30 pm

The Palestinian Authority on Sunday slammed Israel for resisting the promised reopening of the US consulate in Jerusalem, a move that would restore Washington’s main diplomatic mission for the Palestinians in the city.Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said late Saturday there was no room in Jerusalem for another American mission.US President Joe Biden has pledged to reopen the consulate, but the issue has been a sticking point between Israel and the US, as well as among some members of Congress.Last month, a senior official in the US State Department told senators that Israel’s permission would be required before the United States could reopen the consulate. The consulate was shuttered by then-US president Donald Trump in 2019 and its staff was folded into the US embassy — which had been moved from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem a year earlier — in what the Palestinians view as a downgrading of their ties with the US.Though reopening the consulate, which is located in the west of the capital and not East Jerusalem, could help mend US ties with the Palestinians ruptured under Trump, Israel says such a move would challenge its sovereignty over the city.In a statement, the Palestinian Authority Foreign Ministry said it views the reopening of the consulate as part of the international community’s commitments to ending Israel’s decades-long occupation of territories the Palestinians seek for their future state.“East Jerusalem is an inseparable part of the occupied Palestinian territory and is the capital of the state of Palestine. Israel, as the occupying power, does not have the right to veto the US administration’s decision,” the statement said.Asked Saturday night about the consulate at a press conference, Bennett repeated Israel’s position on Jerusalem.“There’s no room for another American consulate in Jerusalem,” he said. “Jerusalem is the capital of one state and that’s the State of Israel.”Foreign Minister Yair Lapid suggested the consulate could instead be opened in the Palestinian administrative center in Ramallah in the West Bank. The Palestinians reject the idea because it would undermine their claims to Jerusalem.Asked about the issue during a press conference alongside Lapid in Washington last month, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken reiterated the Biden administration’s intention to proceed with the plan. “As I said in May, we’ll be moving forward with the process of opening a consulate as part of deepening those ties with the Palestinians,” he said.Behind closed doors, Lapid reportedly warned Blinken that such a move could risk toppling the coalition government.Israel views Jerusalem as its eternal, undivided capital. The Palestinians seek the eastern part of the city, which Israel gained in the 1967 Six Day War and later annexed, as the capital of their hoped-for state. The consulate is emerging as another point of friction between Bennett’s government and the Biden administration, which has moved to restore traditional US foreign policy toward Israel and the Palestinians after the Trump White House largely sided with Israel on issues related to the conflict.Blinken has not provided a firm date for the reopening.

ISRAEL RECAPTURES JERUSALEM 54 YEARS AGO TODAY. THE END OF THE AGE COUNTDOWN.

JEWISH KING JESUS IS COMING AT THE RAPTURE FOR US IN THE CLOUDS-DON'T MISS IT FOR THE WORLD.THE BIBLE TAKEN LITERALLY- WHEN THE PLAIN SENSE MAKES GOOD SENSE-SEEK NO OTHER SENSE-LEST YOU END UP IN NONSENSE.GET SAVED NOW- CALL ON JESUS TODAY.THE ONLY SAVIOR OF THE WHOLE EARTH - NO OTHER. 1 COR 15:23-JESUS THE FIRST FRUITS-CHRISTIANS RAPTURED TO JESUS-FIRST FRUITS OF THE SPIRIT-23 But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ’s at his coming.ROMANS 8:23 And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.(THE PRE-TRIB RAPTURE)

WE SAY HAPPY 54TH BIRTHDAY ON THIS JUNE 7,21. TO ISRAEL ON THE RECAPTURE OF JERUSALEM AS THEIR ETERNAL CAPITAL. WERE JESUS OUR JEWISH MESSIAH WILL BE RULING FROM FOREVER. OVER HIS PEOPLE THE JEWS FOREVER-NEVER ENDING FROM JERUSALEM. AND ALSO THE RECAPTURE OF JERUSALEM BY ISRAEL 54 YEARS AGO TODAY.  WAS THE BEGINING OF THE LAST DAYS OF THE AGE OF GRACE COUNTDOWN. AND HOW DO WE KNOW THAT YOU ARE ASKING. WELL IN DANIEL 9:24 IN CONTEXT-JESUS TALKS ABOUT ISRAEL AS A NATION AND THEIR HOLY CITY JERUSALEM. THATS WHY. WHEN ISRAEL BECAME A NATION ON MAY 14,48. THEN RECAPTURED JERUSALEM ON THIS JUNE 7,67. FROM DANIEL 9:24-ISRAEL HAS TO BE A NATION AND RECAPTURE JERUSALEM. TO START THE BEGINING OF THE LAST DAYS AGE OF GRACE COUNTDOWN. AND I FIGURE A GENERATION IN THE BIBLE IS 40 YEARS. BUT CAN BE AS HIGH AS 120 YEARS. AS IT TOOK 120 YEARS FOR NOAH TO BUILD THE ARK. BEFORE THAT FINAL JUDGEMENT ON EARTHS POPULATION. 40 YEARS WAS 2007. AND 120 YEARS IS 2087. SO I BELIEVE THE 7 YEAR TRIBULATION PERIOD CAN OCCUR ANY TIME BETWEEN 2007 AND 2087. THATS GOING BY ISRAEL RECAPTURING JERUSALEM AS THEIR CAPITAL. THATS WHEN GOD DEALS WITH ISRAEL AND THE WHOLE EARTHS POPULATION ONCE AGAIN. LIKE IN NOAHS DAY. AND IF WE START THE END OF THE AGE COUNTDOWN BY ISRAEL BECOMING A NATION. THE START AND END DATES WOULD BE. 40-YRS (1988) 120-YRS (2068) . EITHER DATE IS A GOOD BIBLE DATE. 7 IN THE BIBLE MEANS COMPLETION. AND 8 IN THE BIBLE IS JESUS' NUMBER. MY 7 ISRAEL-JERUSALOEM COUNTDOWN SEEMS THE BEST THOUGH. ITS COMPLETION ONCE AGAIN LIKE IN NOAHS DAY OF GODS JUDGEMENT OF ISRAEL-JERUSALEM AND ALL OF EARTHS POPULATION. THE ONLY DIFFERENCE THIS TIME IS ONLY 4 BILLION OR HALF OF EARTHS POPULATION DIE. INSTEAD OF AT NOAHS JUDGEMENT. ONLY 6 OR SO PEOPLE WERE LEFT ON EARTH TO REPOPULATE IT. ALL THE REST OF THE EARTHS POPULATION WERE KILLEDE OFF. AND IN THIS LAST 7 YEARS OF DANIEL 9:27 GOD DEALSWITH ISRAEL-JERUSALEM AND VALL OF EARTHS POPULATION ONCE AGAIN.

DANIEL9:24-27

“Seventy [a]weeks are determined
For your people and for your holy city,
To finish the transgression,
[b]To make an end of sins,
To make reconciliation for iniquity,
To bring in everlasting righteousness,
To seal up vision and prophecy,
And to anoint [c]the Most Holy.

25
“Know therefore and understand,
That from the going forth of the command
To restore and build Jerusalem
Until Messiah the Prince,
There shall be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks;
The [d]street shall be built again, and the [e]wall,
Even in troublesome times.

26
“And after the sixty-two weeks
Messiah shall [f]be cut off, but not for Himself;
And the people of the prince who is to come
Shall destroy the city and the sanctuary.
The end of it shall be with a flood,
And till the end of the war desolations are determined.
27
Then he shall confirm a [g]covenant with many for one week;
But in the middle of the week
He shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering.
And on the wing of abominations shall be one who makes desolate,
Even until the consummation, which is determined,
Is poured out on the [h]desolate.”

ISRAEL BECOMES A NATION LITERALLY JUST BEFORE SUMMER MAY 14,1948

MATTHEW 24 32-44
The Parable of the Fig Tree-32 “Now learn this parable from the fig tree: When its branch has already become tender and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near. 33 So you also, when you see all these things, know that [e]it is near—at the doors! 34 Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take place. 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.
No One Knows the Day or Hour-36 “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of [f]heaven, but My Father only. 37 But as the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. 38 For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, 39 and did not know until the flood came and took them all away, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. 40 Then two men will be in the field: one will be taken and the other left. 41 Two women will be grinding at the mill: one will be taken and the other left. 42 Watch therefore, for you do not know what [g]hour your Lord is coming. 43 But know this, that if the master of the house had known what [h]hour the thief would come, he would have watched and not allowed his house to be broken into. 44 Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.

In Christmas address, Pope calls for needy, vulnerable to get vaccine first-Roman pontiff urges leaders of nations, businesses and international organizations to ‘promote cooperation and not competition, and to search for solution for all’By Frances D'Emilio-DEC 25,20-Today, 7:55 pm

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis made a Christmas Day plea for authorities to make COVID-19 vaccines available to all, insisting that the first in line should be the most vulnerable and needy, regardless of who holds the patents for the shots.“Vaccines for everybody, especially for the most vulnerable and needy,” who should be first in line, Francis said in off-the-cuff remarks from his prepared text, calling the development of such vaccines “light of hope” for the world.“We can’t let closed nationalisms impede us from living as the true human family that we are,” the pope said.He called on the leaders of nations, businesses and international organizations to “promote cooperation and not competition, and to search for a solution for all.”Amid a surge of coronavirus infections this fall in Italy, Francis broke with tradition for Christmas. Instead of delivering his “Urbi et Orbi” speech — Latin for “to the city and to the world” — outdoors from the central loggia of St. Peter’s Basilica, he read it from inside a cavernous hall at the Apostolic Palace, flanked by two Christmas trees with blinking lights.Pope Francis, center, delivers the Urbi et Orbi Christmas’ day blessing inside the blessing hall of St. Peter’s Basilica, at the Vatican on December 25, 2020. (Vatican Media via AP)-Normally, tens of thousands of people would have crowded into St. Peter’s Square to receive the pope’s Christmas blessing and listen to his speech. But Italian measures to try to rein in holiday infections allow people to leave their homes on Christmas for only urgent reasons like work, health, visits to nearby loved ones or exercise close to home. The pandemic’s repercussions on life dominated Francis’ reflections on the past year.“At this moment in history, marked by the ecological crisis and grave economic and social imbalances only worsened by the coronavirus pandemic, it is all the more important for us to acknowledge one another as brothers and sisters,” Francis said.Fraternity and compassion apply to people “even though they do not belong to my family, my ethnic group or my religion,” he said.Pope Francis, background second from left, delivers the Urbi et Orbi Christmas day blessing inside the blessing hall of St. Peter’s Basilica, at the Vatican on December 25, 2020. (Vatican Media via AP)-Francis prayed that the birth of Jesus would inspire people to be “generous, supportive and helpful” to those in need, including those struggling with ”the economic effects of the pandemic and women who have suffered domestic violence during these months of lockdown.”Noting that the “American continent” was particularly hard-hit by COVID-19, he said that the pandemic compounded suffering, “often aggravated by the consequences of corruption and drug trafficking.” In particular, he cited the suffering of the Venezuelan people. On a day when Christians recall Jesus as a baby, Francis drew attention to the “too many children in all the world, especially in Syria, Iraq and Yemen, who still pay the high price of war.”Among others he said sorely needed comfort at Christmas time were the Iraqi people, and “in particular the Yazidi, hard hit by the last years of war.” And, he said, “I cannot forget the Rohingya people,” adding that he hoped that Jesus, “born poor among the poor, will bring hope in their suffering.”

Israel travelsEchoes of ancient monks and conquerors-There tradition says Jesus spent his last night: Guide to Mt. of Olives churches-Houses of worship on the Jerusalem mountain bear the marks of the city’s past believers, builders and invaders-By Aviva and Shmuel Bar-Am-25 December 2020, 10:44 am

Sometime during his reign, King Herod Antipas murdered John the Baptist — at least that is what Roman historian Josephus Flavius recorded in his 1st-century volume “Antiquities of the Jews.” After the deed was done, according to the New Testament, Antipas severed John’s head from his body.Antipas’ superstitious sister-in-law, Herodias, believed that John had magic powers. Worried that if his head and body were buried together he would come back to haunt her, she threw the head into a rubbish heap. One tradition holds that a woman who saw Herodias toss the head into the trash carefully removed it, placed it in a clay pot, and buried it on the Mount of Olives.During the fourth century, two Syrian monks visited Jerusalem. They woke up on their first morning in the Holy City, and both reported having dreamed that John the Baptist appeared and told them where to find his head.At first, the monks didn’t take their dreams seriously. But when the same thing happened two more nights in a row, they took a pair of spades and dug where they had been told. And there, to the monks’ amazement, was the head.At the time, King Constantine was the ruler of the Byzantine Empire and his mother Helena was in Israel locating sites holy to Christianity. When she heard of the monks’ amazing discovery, Helena ordered a chapel erected on that holy spot. Clearly visible as it towers above the Mount of Olives, it is known today as the Russian Orthodox Church of the Ascension. And inside its chapel is the hollow in which John’s head was buried.Over a dozen churches are spread out along the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem where, according to the New Testament, Jesus spent his last free night in agony over what was to come. Each house of worship boasts its own special style and its own unique story. Before the pandemic struck, hundreds of pilgrims wandered the slopes of the Mount of Olives daily and on Christian holidays there were thousands. Today, those of you who live abroad can only visit from afar. Here are but a few of the mount’s churches:Dominus Flevit-Catholic — Franciscan Order-Located on the upper slopes of the Mount of Olives-Two thousand years ago, when you descended the Mount of Olives toward Jerusalem, an incomparable tableau unfolded before your eyes. The Holy Temple towered above the Kidron Valley — its marble columns and enormous bronze doors a shimmering vision in the morning sun. Indeed, the dazzle of the city’s glorious palaces and shiny white marble towers must have blinded the eyes of its beholders. As Jesus walked toward Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, he could have been overwhelmed by the glory of the sight. Knowing the tragic fate which would soon befall the Holy City, and aware of the devastation and desecration that lay in store, Jesus wept.Facing the Old City’s magnificent panorama is a sanctuary called Dominus Flevit, which means, in Latin, “the Lord wept.” To symbolize what occurred on or near this site, the sanctuary was fashioned in what the architect envisaged as a teardrop (look at it upside down to see the resemblance).“Flevit super illam,” by Spanish painter Enrique Simonet, depicts Jesus mourning on the Mount of Olives as he approaches Jerusalem as described in the Gospel of Luke. The Latin title of the 1892 painting means “He wept over it.” (Public domain)-One of the newest churches in Jerusalem, Dominus Flevit sits atop a very ancient site. During construction in 1955 archaeologists uncovered artifacts dating back to the Canaanite period as well as tombs from both the Second Temple and Byzantine eras. Also unearthed were the remains of a lovely Byzantine shrine with an elaborate mosaic floor. The chapel’s most remarkable feature is its arch-shaped picture window, purposely situated behind the altar. Thus worshipers and visitors have a stupendous view through the window of the contemporary Old City and the glittering golden Dome of the Rock.Church/Mosque of the Ascension-Under Islamic control-Located on the top of the Mount of Olives-The Mosque of the Ascension, built on the site where tradition says Jesus rose to heaven. Romans, Persians, Crusaders and Saladin’s army all left their mark on the site. (Shmuel Bar-Am)-Near the end of the fourth century, a wealthy Roman woman named Pomenia lived in Bethlehem with some friends. One day she ordered workers to build a church on the Mount of Olives — a rotunda open to the sky. Erected upon the site where tradition holds Jesus rose to heaven, her church was destroyed by the Persians less than 300 years later, during their conquest of the Holy Land.Crusaders reconstructed the shrine, but gave it an octagonal shape, added fortifications, and made it part of a chain of defensive citadels. From its position at the crest of the Mount of Olives, the Crusader church controlled the road between Jericho and Jerusalem.Saladin defeated the Crusaders in 1187, and the Church of the Ascension ended up in Muslim control. With little deference to the sanctuary’s truly unique architecture, the conquerors plugged up the spaces between its slender, decorative columns and enclosed the open ceiling within a dome. The shrine to Jesus’ Ascension had become a mosque.Although many a Crusader church was converted into a mosque after the Muslim conquest of the Holy Land, this one is of particular interest because a tradition endows it with a print of Jesus’ foot. Early pilgrims reported seeing the print indelibly implanted in the rock at the time of the ascension to heaven, located in the center of the original church. Today the print remains set in a venerated rock which the Muslims moved to one end of their mosque.-Church of all Nations and Gethsemane-Catholic – Franciscan Order-Located at the foot of the Mount of Olives-The Church of All Nations was built at the beginning of the 20th century with funding from Catholic communities worldwide. (Shmuel Bar-Am)-Theodosius the Great ruled the Byzantine Empire from 379 to 395. A fervent advocate of Christianity, he erected an elegant church on the Mount of Olives in 380 and called it the Basilica of the Agony. For according to the New Testament, it was here in a garden of olive trees that Jesus spent an agonizing night in prayer before he was arrested.Destroyed by the Persians in the 7th century, it was rebuilt a short distance away by the Crusaders, and demolished by invading Muslim forces several hundred years later. The church was resurrected at the beginning of the 20th century, when a striking new structure arose atop the ruins.Designed by renowned Italian architect Antonio Barluzzi in 1919 and inaugurated in 1924, the contemporary sanctuary is one of Jerusalem’s most stirring houses of worship. Indeed, its phenomenal golden mosaic and imposing facade combine to make the church exterior a Jerusalem landmark. Also known as the Church of All Nations, the new basilica was funded by Catholic communities from over a dozen different countries.
The Gethsemane garden, next to the Church of All Nations, is home to olive trees that are hundreds of years old. (Shmuel Bar-Am)-Next to the church, a large garden is filled with olive trees and called Gethsemane — which means “oil press,” in Hebrew. A few of the trees are so thick and gnarled that they could conceivably be over 1,000 years old; some researchers maintain that these are the original trees that witnessed Jesus’ agonizing last night on earth. Even if not quite that ancient, they are almost certainly offshoots of the olive trees which stood in the garden 2,000 years ago.Church of the Assumption — Mary’s Tomb-Greek Orthodox-Located in the Valley of Kidron at the foot of the Mount of Olives-The Greek Orthodox Church of the Assumption, a shrine to the Virgin Mary, a portion of which was built by Crusaders. (Shmuel Bar-Am)-Although the New Testament doesn’t tell us what fate befell the Virgin Mary after the Crucifixion, it is widely believed that she died in Jerusalem. Indeed, tradition tells us that Mary fell into eternal sleep on Mount Zion and that her lifeless body was carried just outside of the Jerusalem walls for burial. Once there, Mary was lifted out of her tomb and “assumed” into the glory of heaven. The first shrine above Mary’s earthly burial and assumption site was built in the Byzantine era. It was shaped like a cross, with Mary’s tomb situated in the center. That sanctuary was destroyed by the Persians in the year 614. When the Crusaders erected a sanctuary over the tomb four centuries later, it naturally became known as the Church of the Assumption. The upper portion of the Crusader church was demolished by Saladin’s forces, but the lower part, the contemporary house of worship and the tomb itself, still remains.Seen from the sidewalk, the Church of the Assumption is not an impressive sight. That is because the original basilica, an integral part of the church, is located well below today’s street level. To reach Mary’s tomb and the assumption site, you descend a vaulted inner staircase and walk down almost 50 steps. Once inside, the church’s murky interior can be incredibly gloomy. And why shouldn’t it be — the tomb is located in a very ancient underground chamber.-Church of St. Mary Magdalene-Russian Orthodox-On the lower slopes of the Mount of Olives-The Church of St. Mary Magdalene, built by Alexander III of Russia and opened in 1888. (Shmuel Bar-Am)-Built by Alexander III of Russia, the Church of St. Mary Magdalene is probably the most conspicuous house of worship in Jerusalem. It owes its prominence to the presence of seven gilded, onion-shaped domes jutting out from a monumental Muscovite-style body that stands proudly against the sky. From a distance what you see of St. Mary Magdalene are its memorable bulb-like cupolas. But the building is as remarkable as its domes. Indeed, the palatial exterior features a mind-boggling variety of styles and decorations that is fascinating to behold. And although it appears to be made of marble, the facade is actually a stunning, sculpted white sandstone.Over the iconastasis — the eastern Orthodox partition that separates the prayer hall from the sanctuary — is an enormous canvas by 19th-century artist Aleksandr Ivanov. It illustrates a popular legend in which Mary travels to Rome to tell Emperor Tiberius of Jesus’ unfair trial and unjust sentence. It is said that Mary held an egg in her hand, representing life. But it turned red when she handed it to the emperor, thus becoming a living symbol of blood and resurrection. Quite possibly, this is the origin of the custom of dying eggs on the Easter holiday.—Adapted for The Times of Israel from Aviva Bar-Am’s book “Beyond the Walls: Churches of Jerusalem.”Shmuel Bar-Am is a licensed tour guide who provides private, customized tours in Israel for individuals, families and small groups.

Interview'People can look at the text with someone else's lenses' The Bible without Jesus? How two faiths can read the same text in dissonant ways-Amy-Jill Levine and Marc Brettler parse opposing interpretations Jews and Christians have of the same Bible, and make the argument that religion doesn’t have to be a zero-sum game-By Rich Tenorio-DEC 25,20-Today, 4:32 pm

For Christians, the birth of Jesus in a manger in Bethlehem two millennia ago was not only chronicled in the New Testament, but also prophesied centuries earlier in parts of the Hebrew Bible. It goes without saying that most Jewish readers view those passages of the Old Testament differently.A recently published book, “The Bible With and Without Jesus: How Jews and Christians Read the Same Stories Differently,” seeks to offer some insight into how two faiths can have such disparate understandings of the same text. The book’s two co-authors — professors Amy-Jill Levine of Vanderbilt University and Marc Zvi Brettler of Duke University — are American Jews affiliated with Jewish Studies departments. Levine specializes in the New Testament and Brettler, who is currently based in Israel, focuses on the Hebrew Bible. As they explained in a recent joint Zoom interview with The Times of Israel, they hope their new book can help Jews and Christians understand each other better by examining how each faith interprets the same select passages of the Hebrew Bible. We’re not encouraging people to change religious beliefs,” Brettler emphasized. “We’re encouraging people on both sides of the divide to not see it as such a divide, but to look at these texts with somebody else’s lenses.”Levine and Brettler have been collaborating on this topic for some time now. In a previous project, they co-edited the “Jewish Annotated New Testament,” first published in 2011 with a second edition in 2017. A photo of the authors giving a copy of the book to Pope Francis in 2019 was shared widely in academic social media circles.Marc Zvi Brettler, left, and Amy-Jill Levine, center-right, give a copy of their previous book, the ‘Jewish Annotated New Testament’ to Pope Francis in March 2019. (Courtesy)-In the wake of the “Jewish Annotated New Testament,” the authors continued to note instances in which Jews and Christians seem unaware of the different ways the others’ faith interprets the same parts of the Hebrew Bible. This insight led the pair to realize there was another book they needed to write, said Levine.Their new book is built around parts of the Hebrew Bible, or Old Testament, that Levine and Brettler identify as especially popular among Christians, starting from Adam and Eve to the term “Son of Man.”“We chose which passages would be most familiar to Christian readers from repeated use in the New Testament,” Levine said. “We also wanted passages that would be the most helpful to Jewish readers unfamiliar with the New Testament.”Amy-Jill Levine of Vanderbilt University, co-author of ‘The Bible With and Without Jesus.’ (Courtesy)-In each case, the authors look at the text’s interpretation in Christianity before delving into its interpretations among Jews.“We quote the text and what it does in its particular [New Testament] location — such as the Gospel of Matthew, of Mark, Paul’s Epistle to the Romans, and so on,” Levine said. Then, “we dip back to detail, as best as possible, how the text was understood in its original historical context,” as well as how it may have been understood by later Jewish interpreters, from the Dead Sea Scrolls, to Josephus, to medieval commentators such as renowned 11th-century biblical linguist Rashi [Rabbi Shlomo Yitzhaki] and Moses Maimonides.“For every chapter, we really had to do three different bodies of research,” Brettler said. “What the biblical text originally meant, what it meant in Christianity, and what it meant within Judaism.” He noted that “Jewish interpretation, in general, was much more diffuse than Christian interpretation. Lots of decisions were hard to make about which parts of Jewish interpretation to emphasize and include more than others.”Just who was Jesus, anyway? Joel Marcus, an emeritus professor of New Testament and Christian origins at Duke Divinity School and a colleague of Brettler’s, explained that disputes over Jesus’s historical role led to differing interpretations of the Hebrew Bible between Jews and Christians.Marcus said that “the earliest Christians were Jews,” but “most Jews eventually decided that Jesus was not the messiah, and controversy arose between Jews and Christians around the interpretation of many parts of Scripture.”For example, the Book of Isaiah from Chapter 40 onward is discussed in “The Bible With and Without Jesus.” Centuries after Jesus’s death, the term “suffering servant” was coined among early Christians to infuse these passages with a Christian interpretation that they foretell Jesus. These passages in Isaiah feature “a mysterious figure called the Servant,” Marcus said. “Sometimes it seems pretty clear Israel itself is the servant. Sometimes the servant seems to be an individual figure. Sometimes it seems to have a collective nature.” Overall, he said, “the identity of the figure seems to oscillate between an individual and a collective reference.”“I think maybe early Christians noticed that,” Marcus said. “It helped them in their relating those sections to Jesus, who in Christian understanding is an individual figure and also a figure with a collective dimension.”“For Jesus’s followers, pretty much everything in Israel’s Scriptures pointed to him,” Levine said. “Thus the text came to have a singular meaning.”Early Christians began reinterpreting other parts of the Hebrew Bible through a Christ-centered lens. They found prophecies of the Nativity narrative in some of the texts examined by Levine and Brettler, such as other parts of Isaiah and the Book of Jeremiah.Levine holds that such texts can “add to the familiar Christmas story,” taking it beyond the contemporary understanding of “Santa Claus, a Christmas tree, presents, something about a baby.” She sees the Bethlehem narrative as “not just a sweet story about a boy left in a manger, a bunch of wise people, individuals from the East, with frankincense and myrrh,” but one with “historical context in the Roman Empire, children in danger, political oppression, forced emigration, the plight of the immigrants, international relations, economics, politics, echoes of Israel’s history, a stunningly profound story.”The Gospel of Matthew links Jesus’s virgin birth to prophecies in Isaiah, and of Herod’s slaughter of the innocents in Jeremiah. Yet, Levine said, the original Hebrew words in Isaiah meant a young woman who is pregnant, not a virgin who will become pregnant, while Jeremiah 31 is about Rachel weeping for her children, “no more.”“Matthew glosses over how some of these [Old Testament] individuals functioned in their original context,” Levine said. “Our understanding of Matthew becomes increased by our understanding of post-biblical Judaism… The more you know about how texts were read in antiquity, the more robust your knowledge of your own sacred scripture will become.”Walking in a mine field-Levine and Brettler recognize that the terrain they are venturing upon has been fraught for much of history. They reference polemics by Jews and Christians in which the authors condemn the inability of the other faith to see things their way.“Part of the basic issue is that we tend through history to be ‘either-or,’ not ‘both-and,’” Levine said. “‘If Christians are right, Jews must be wrong, and vice-versa. Christians claim that Jews fail to see Jesus in their own scriptures. Paul speaks in 2 Corinthians of Jews reading their scripture through a veil that is only removed when they accept Jesus as lord. That’s a polemical mindset.”“There does not have to be only one way to read,” said Levine.Levine and Brettler are hopeful that today, there are more opportunities for mutual understanding.“This really is an era of very significant Jewish-Christian detente,” Brettler said. “There are a lot more attempts at churches and synagogues to try to understand the other without converting them.”“Times really have changed,” he added. “It’s been more than 50 years since the Second Vatican Council. It’s been slow change, but continuing change.”James McGrath, the chair of New Testament language and literature at Butler University and an American Baptist, agreed that things have changed in a positive way.“There’s now a vibrant, very, very flourishing wealth of Jewish interpretations of the New Testament,” McGrath said. “People are actively investigating it.”McGrath looks forward to reading “The Bible With and Without Jesus,” which he has requested at his local library and is considering using as a textbook. A specialist in biblical interpretation himself, he is working on a project about where John the Baptist fits into the history of Judaism.People can hear the same thing and it means different things to them-“People can hear the same thing and it means different things to them,” McGrath said. “Sometimes it reflects the original context, sometimes less so.”He said that in Christianity, Isaiah “gets probably more focus than pretty much any other book in the Hebrew Bible,” and that in churches on Christmas, when Christians “quote” Isaiah as saying, “Behold, a virgin shall conceive…,” they “do not mention other references in their original context — King Ahaz, the Assyrians, things of that sort.”James McGrath, chair of New Testament language and literature at Butler University. (Courtesy)-Marcus, Brettler’s colleague at Duke, has a faith trajectory reflecting the differing ways in which he has read the same texts over time, including Isaiah.Growing up in a Jewish family, he converted to Christianity — first, with what he describes as more fundamentalist forms, and now as a member of the Episcopal church. Today he identifies as both Jewish and Christian. When he reads the “suffering servant” songs in Isaiah, he said, “I still think it sounds a lot like Jesus as he is portrayed in the New Testament.” He said that he thinks “what a text means, and comes to mean, can transcend what the author himself or herself meant it to mean.” However, he said, “I also think it’s important to try to discover what the text originally meant to the original authors and audiences.”Boston University emeritus Scripture professor Paula Fredriksen. (Courtesy)-For Boston University emeritus Scripture professor Paula Fredriksen, a visiting professor of comparative religion at Hebrew University, the topic of how Jews and Christians read the Hebrew Bible differently may be news for some lay audiences but not for academics with a comparative religion background. The latter “compare different religions all the time,” she said, including through “other fields” such as anthropology, literary criticism and classics.Fredriksen noted that just as differing opinions exist between Jews and Christians, there are also varying intra-faith interpretations in Christianity. For example, whereas Christians in the West celebrate Christmas Day on December 25, some Orthodox Christians will celebrate it on January 7.“December 25 is the Western Roman date for Christmas,” she said. “It’s not the case on different Christian calendars.”However you celebrate your holidays, “The Bible With and Without Jesus” indicates the great gift of interfaith understanding.“Ideally, it will [be translated into] various languages,” Levine said. “Jews are interested in Christianity, Christians are interested in Judaism. Ideally, they will start to talk about each other in increasingly informed and respectful ways.”

Explosion hits gas pipeline in Egypt’s Sinai, no casualties-Authorities probe cause of blast in restive region; officials say blast will not affect supply to el-Arish area-By AP-DEC 25,20-Today, 3:27 pm

EL-ARISH, Egypt — An explosion at a key natural gas pipeline in Egypt’s restive northern Sinai Peninsula caused a fire but no human casualties, a senior official said North Sinai Governor Mohamed Abdel Fadil Shousha said the explosion took place late Thursday in el-Arish, the provincial capital. In a statement, he said the explosion will not affect the pipeline’s supply to el-Arish’s residential areas or an industrial zone in central Sinai. An investigation was underway to determine the cause of the blast, Shousha said. However, other security officials and eyewitnesses said militants planted explosives on the pipeline before fleeing the scene. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief the media, and the eyewitnesses asked not to be named for fear of reprisal. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the blast.A similar explosion hit a gas pipeline in northern Sinai last month and was claimed by the Islamic State group affiliate.IS said militants detonated several explosive devices to damage a pipeline that carries natural gas from Egypt to Israel. The group offered no proof for its claim.Egypt has for years been battling an insurgency in northern Sinai that’s now led by the IS affiliate. Fighting intensified in 2013, after the military overthrew the country’s elected but divisive Islamist president, Mohammed Morsi.Authorities heavily restrict access to northern Sinai, making it difficult to verify claims related to the fighting.IS has carried out a number of large-scale attacks in Egypt in recent years, mainly targeting members of the security forces and Egypt’s Christian minority.

Satellite images show airstrike damage to weapons facilities in Syria-Private intelligence firm releases photographs of aftermath of Friday pre-dawn attacks attributed to Israel against missile production complex near Masyaf-By Agencies and TOI staff-DEC 25,20-Today, 11:03 pm

Four weapons manufacturing facilities were destroyed in northwestern Syria early Friday morning in a series of airstrikes attributed to Israel, according to satellite images released by a private Israeli intelligence firm.Syria’s official news agency SANA said the attack occurred near the town of Masyaf and that the missiles were fired from Lebanese territory. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a pro-Syrian opposition organization, claimed the strikes hit positions of Iran-backed militias and killed at least six foreign paramilitaries. The claim could not be verified. It said the strikes targeted the Iran-backed groups’ arms depots and facilities for manufacturing short-range missiles.According to the satellite imagery analysis company ImageSat International, the airstrikes Friday destroyed four weapons production buildings “that were probably used for mixing and casting components of missile engines and warheads.”The targets appeared to be part of a factory complex whose primary mission is the production of “missile engines, rockets and warheads,” the satellite company said, citing open-source reports. One of the destroyed buildings had been rebuilt following a previous attack, the company indicated.#Syria, #Masyaf: SSM Facility #Attack’s (25 December 2020) Aftermath – An SSM Engines or #Warheads Production Building pic.twitter.com/13Co9K9srU — ImageSat Intl. (@ImageSatIntl) December 25, 2020-Before-and-after images from the site show a destroyed series of structures in the airstrikes.Masyaf is a significant military area for Syrian President Bashar Assad’s regime that includes a military academy and a scientific research center. The general area around Masyaf, which is also believed to have a major Iranian presence, has reportedly been targeted by Israel many times in the past. The Associated Press said Israeli jets flew very low over parts of Lebanon before the strikes, including over Beirut, frightening some of the city’s residents. The Syrian Ministry of Defense issued a statement Friday saying Israel “launched an aggression by directing a barrage of rockets” from the north of the Lebanese city of Tripoli toward the Masyaf area.It said Syrian air defenses “confronted the enemy missiles and intercepted most of them.” Syrian war analysts generally dismiss the military’s regular claims of interceptions as false, empty boasts.Syrian state TV aired footage purporting to show air defenses responding to the Israeli attack. There was no comment from the Israel Defense Forces, which generally maintains a policy of ambiguity regarding its activities against Iran and its proxies in Syria, refusing to publicly acknowledge its actions. The last reported Israeli strikes in Syria took place a month ago in the southern part of the country, near Israel’s border with Syria on the Golan Heights, and reportedly targeted sites associated with Iran and its proxies. The IDF has launched hundreds of strikes in Syria since the start of the civil war in 2011 against moves by Iran to establish a permanent military presence in the country and efforts to transport advanced, game-changing weapons to terrorist groups in the region, principally Hezbollah.

Reuters-Ireland breathes sigh of relief as 'least bad' Brexit deal clinched-Thu, December 24, 2020, 11:52 AM EST

DUBLIN (Reuters) - Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin expressed relief on Thursday after neighbouring Britain agreed a last-minute trade deal with the European Union which he said was the "least bad version of Brexit possible".Ireland, the EU member state most exposed to the fall-out from Britain's departure, was an important player during four rocky years of exit negotiations in which it sought to shelter its highly exposed agricultural sector and avoid a hard border infrastructure with the British region of Northern Ireland."There is no such thing as a good Brexit for Ireland, but... I believe the agreement reached today is the least bad version of Brexit possible, given current circumstances," Martin said after Britain and the EU announced the deal. While Irish firms have diversified into new markets since 2016, cutting trade to Britain to 9% of total Irish goods exports last year, its nearest neighbour still accounts for around one-third of its food and agricultural exports. That sector would have been battered by heavy tariffs if Britain had left the EU on World Trade Organization terms. Ireland's large beef industry, which sells almost half of what it produces to Britain, would have been subject to tariffs of 72%.Preserving the delicate peace in Northern Ireland without allowing the United Kingdom a back door into the EU's single market through the 310-mile UK-Irish land border was one of the most difficult issues during the first phase of talks, which culminated in the Withdrawal Agreement in late 2019.The British government angered the Irish government by threatening to unilaterally scrap elements of that deal, but withdrew the threat as the outline of a trade deal emerged in recent weeks."The peace process had been protected, peace funding has been protected, Ireland's place in the single market of the EU has been protected," Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveney told RTE radio. While Ireland's large pharmaceutical and multinational tech sector has shielded the economy from the worst of the COVID-19 crisis, around 20% of its workforce is now permanently or temporarily unemployed. That means it could ill-afford what Martin said could have been a second "appalling" economic shock from a "no-deal" British exit from the EU.Ireland based its budget for 2021 on the assumption that the talks would fail. A deal could add 3-4 percentage points to the finance department's gross domestic product forecast range of +1.7% to -2.1% for next year, Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe said at the time."Businesses in Ireland and across the UK can breathe a collective sigh of relief today," the British Irish Chamber said in a statement.(Reporting by Conor Humphries and Padraic Halpin; Editing by Mark Heinrich)

IDF reportedly strikes Gaza after rockets fired into Israel-Palestinian media says Israel attacked targets in central part of Strip after 2 projectiles fired across border-By TOI staff-26 December 2020, 1:26 am

Palestinian media reported Israeli airstrikes in Gaza on Saturday morning, after rockets were fired from the Strip into Israel on Friday evening. The Shehab news agency, which is affiliated with the Hamas terror group that controls the Strip, reported attacks in the central part of the territory.Earlier, two rockets fired from Gaza were shot down by the Iron Dome anti-missile system. There were no reports of injuries or damage. The Israeli military confirmed that the projectiles fired into Israel were intercepted by soldiers operating the air defense system.Sirens warning of the incoming rockets blared in several southern Israeli communities near Gaza, sending residents into shelters. The Red Alert sirens sounded in Ashkelon, Zikim, Netiv Ha’asara and nearby towns in the Hof Ashkelon Regional Council.Last month, two rockets fired from Gaza struck open areas along the coast — one near the city of Ashdod and the other on Palmachim Beach, south of Tel Aviv — causing no significant damage or injuries.Soldiers operating the Iron Dome air defense system attempted to shoot down the rocket fired toward Palmachim Beach, firing at least two interceptor missiles at the projectile, but did not bring it down. Fragments of an interceptor missile landed in the nearby city of Bat Yam, causing minor damage. The rocket fire last month came days after the one-year anniversary of the killing of Palestinian Islamic Jihad commander Baha Abu al-Ata.Israel has fought three large campaigns against terror groups in the Strip since Hamas took control of the area in 2007, along with dozens of smaller exchanges of fire.

15 Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:
16 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.17 Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.
18 And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.

Normalizing with Israel, Arab states look to gain powerful ally in Washington-Israel has lobbied on behalf of countries willing to establish ties, and others hoping for the same kind of muscle on the Hill are likely taking notice-By Jacob MagidDEC 25,20-Today, 11:44 pm

NEW YORK — Less than 24 hours passed between Senate Democrats failing to block US President Donald Trump’s administration from selling F-35 fighter jets and other advanced arms to the United Arab Emirates and the announcement that Morocco had agreed to re-establish official diplomatic relations with Israel. There is no direct linkage between Rabat’s move and the massive arms sale, which many believe would not have gone forward had Israel not given the deal its own imprimatur following Abu Dhabi’s agreement to normalize with Israel several months earlier. But the proximity of the two events still served to underscore how Jerusalem’s ability to throw its weight around Washington likely factors into the calculus as Arab countries mull establishing diplomatic ties with the Jewish state. One diplomat from an Arab country described Israel’s “reach” in Washington as a selling point that goes well beyond arms deals. For decades, Arab regimes looking to purchase advanced arms from the US have been stymied by the US commitment to safeguard Israel’s qualitative military edge, or QME, in the region, essentially giving Israel a veto over weapons sales.Protecting the QME played at least a partial role in holding up the UAE’s attempt to buy F-35 fighter jets, Reaper drones and other advanced weaponry that would match or outpace US arms sold to the Israel Defense Forces. On the record, the US, Israel and the UAE have all insisted that the eventual $23 billion arms deal was not part of normalization talks. But Trump officials have acknowledged that the agreement put Abu Dhabi in a better position to receive such advanced weaponry. A source with direct knowledge of the talks told The Times of Israel in September that both the US and Israel knew that the arms sale was “very much part of the deal” as the F-35s were of critical importance to the UAE.Once Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Benny Gantz publicly gave their blessings for the deal, opposition to the sale on Capitol Hill was effectively neutralized. The vote on the arms deal-blocking resolution was close and fell almost entirely along party lines, but the bipartisan respect for Israel’s military superiority in the region along with the normalization agreement’s backing on both sides of the aisle helped bring the weapons purchase across the finish line.Reaching beyond arms-Congress had already soured on the Emiratis due to their involvement in the Saudi-led bombing campaign in Yemen, which helped create what has been called the world’s largest humanitarian crisis. But even after Abu Dhabi effectively pulled out in 2019, the arms deal was seemingly unable to go through until Israel gave its okay.According to the Arab diplomat, who spoke on condition of anonymity, this was a sign of US lawmakers’ “respect for Israel.” And others took notice.“This [arms deal] emboldens other countries in the region who are looking to gain access to weapons that, until now, had been off-limits,” said the diplomat, whose government does not have formal relations with the Jewish state.“But it’s not just about weapons. Israel’s reach in Washington can be tapped for other goals, and that certainly makes normalization more enticing, despite the domestic risks,” he added.Israel’s perceived muscle in Washington’s halls of power was already legion in some circles before the Trump administration’s transactional approach to international relations put it on steroids. Suddenly arms, support for controversial moves, or other types of backing could be had for the price of normalization with Israel, or even just talks.A source who served as an adviser to President-elect Joe Biden’s campaign said that Arab state’s understanding of Israeli clout in Washington “is a little exaggerated,” but that the Trump administration “did little to dispel the perception” by tying the United States’ bilateral relations with other countries to the question of Israel normalization.”David Makovsky, a scholar at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, said that Arab states realized that the Trump administration’s approach meant that they could get top dollar for normalization, even on matters unconnected to Israel. Plus, by going with Israel, they were “purchasing… political risk insurance [for] a post-Trump era because peace with Israel has broad support.”Jerusalem wasn’t only happy to come along for the ride, but may have even been in the driver’s seat, lobbying Washington on behalf of Arab states willing to make nice.According to an Axios report, it was a team of former Israeli officials who first came up with the proposal offering US recognition of Moroccan sovereignty in the disputed territory of Western Sahara in exchange for Rabat agreeing to normalize ties with the Jewish state. The news site also reported that Israeli officials lobbied their US counterparts in favor of Washington removing Sudan from its blacklist of state terror sponsors in exchange for Khartoum agreeing to establish diplomatic relations with Israel.Saudi Arabia, which has thus far held off on normalizing with Israel, may also be looking to take advantage of the opportunity to get Israel in its corner, the Arab diplomat who spoke to The Times of Israel speculated. He referenced recent reports that during Netanyahu’s covert visit to Saudi Arabia last month, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman pushed the Israeli premier to assist in Riyadh’s efforts to smooth over its ties with Washington, seemingly dangling normalization with the Jewish state in exchange. However, Makovsky argued that normalization with Israel will not be “a get-out-of-jail-free card because these countries will still have to answer for their [human rights-related] issues.”Then-US Vice President Joseph Biden, left, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, right, talk before a dinner at the Prime Minister’s Residence in Jerusalem, Tuesday, March 9, 2010. (AP Photo/Baz Ratner, Pool)-“It’s helpful, but not necessarily decisive,” he said, suggesting that Biden would move away from the Trump formula for pushing Arab states to normalize with Israel.Biden’s nominee for secretary of state, Tony Blinken, told ToI that the next administration would still seek to advance such agreements, but criticized their apparent “quid pro quo” nature under Trump. The president-elect has also made clear that he plans to reset Washington’s relations with Riyadh to a point where it will be held more accountable for its human rights record. This is something that normalization with Israel would likely not be enough to paper over, Makovsky said. But that’s not to say that Israel’s influence only has value during Republican administrations.US President Barack Obama, right, meets with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, left, Thursday, September 25, 2014, in New York. (AP/Pablo Martinez Monsivais)-Netanyahu’s government was one of the few around the world that lobbied the Obama administration in favor of recognizing Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi as the rightful leader of Egypt after he took over the country in a 2013 military coup. Then-president Barack Obama ultimately got behind the autocrat and re-instated $1.3 billion dollars in military aid, at Israel’s behest. With Obama’s former vice president about to enter office, regimes still weighing normalizing with Israel are hoping that influence remains.“There’s no question that these countries are looking for support on the Hill at the start of new era,” Makovsky said. “But the question is whether that support will be decisive in a way that will extract them from some of the challenges they face.”

Netanyahu speaks to king of Morocco, invites him to visit Israel-In first call since normalization announcement, leaders congratulate one another, discuss ways to advance deal in coming weeks-By TOI staff-DEC 25,20-Today, 8:58 pm 0

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke on the phone with Morocco’s King Mohammed VI on Friday for the first time since the two countries agreed to re-establish diplomatic relations earlier this month. The two leaders congratulated one another on the agreement brokered by US President Donald Trump, which included the White House agreeing to recognize Moroccan sovereignty over the disputed Western Sahara region.During the “warm and friendly” conversation, Netanyahu extended an invitation for King Mohammed VI to visit Israel and the two agreed to continue contacts in order to advance the normalization agreement in the weeks ahead, the Prime Minister’s Office said.“The leaders congratulated each other over the renewal of ties between the countries, the signing of the joint statement with the US, and the agreements between the two countries,” according to the statement from Netanyahu’s office.“In addition, the processes and mechanisms to implement the agreements were determined,” it added. The Moroccan king’s royal office issued a statement saying that, in his conversation with Netanyahu, the monarch recalled “the strong and special ties” between the Jewish community in Morocco and the monarchy and reiterated “the consistent, unwavering and unchanged position of the Kingdom of Morocco on the Palestinian issue and the pioneering role of the kingdom in promoting peace and stability in the Middle East.”On Wednesday, Morocco’s tourism minister announced that direct flights will begin operating between Israel and Morocco within two or three months,A joint Israeli-American delegation visited Morocco on Tuesday to sign several bilateral agreements and a trilateral declaration to solidify the normalization agreement. The group’s flight to Rabat was the first direct commercial flight from Israel to Morocco. The delegation held high-level talks with Moroccan officials, including King Mohammed VI, and Israel and Morocco announced they would move to swiftly reopen diplomatic missions in each country. The two countries previously operated liaison offices in each other’s lands which were closed some 20 years ago.Jared Kushner, US President Donald Trump’s senior adviser and son-in-law, and Israeli National Security Adviser Meir Ben-Shabbat led the delegation.Morocco was the third Arab state this year to normalize ties with Israel under US-brokered deals, joining the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain. Sudan has also announced plans to normalize ties with Israel, though no official agreements have been signed.Morocco is home to North Africa’s largest Jewish community, which has been there since ancient times and grew with the arrival of Jews expelled from Spain by Catholic kings from 1492.It reached about 250,000 in the late 1940s, 10 percent of the national population, but many Jews left after the creation of Israel in 1948, many fleeing local hostilities directed at them over the establishment of the Jewish state.About 3,000 Jews remain in Morocco, and the Casablanca community is one of the country’s most active.Israel, meanwhile, is home to 700,000 Jews of Moroccan origin.

'Our heart desires to move ties with them to a better point' After years of acrimony, Turkey’s Erdogan says he’d like better ties with Israel - Amid multiple reports of covert overtures between nations, some analysts see Ankara as seeking to start off relations with new, less friendly US administration on the right foot-By TOI staff-dec 25,20-Today, 2:29 pm

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he wished to improve ties with Israel, after long years of making repeated bellicose comments toward the Jewish state.“Our relations with Israel on intelligence have not ceased anyway, they are still continuing,” Erdogan said during a press conference. “We have some difficulties with the people at the top.”He stressed that Ankara “cannot accept the attitude of Israel towards the Palestinian lands,” and that “we differ from Israel in terms of our understanding of both justice and the territorial integrity of countries.”But, he noted: “Otherwise, our heart desires that we can move our relations with them to a better point.”Turkey, once a strong Muslim ally of Israel, has become a geopolitical foe under Erdogan. The Turkish leader, an ardent defender of the Palestinian cause and a fierce critic of Israel, has often engaged in diatribes against Israel, including most recently in September during an address to the United Nations General Assembly.Still, Ankara has continued to maintain open ties with the Jewish state, including on tourism and trade.Erdogan’s comments come after a recent report on al-Monitor said Turkey had picked a new ambassador to Israel to fill the diplomatic post left vacant for over two years. Some analysts have commented that with the coming change in US administrations and the arrival of Joe Biden, a president expected to be far less friendly to Erdogan than outgoing Donald Trump, Ankara is hoping to curry favor with Washington through gestures toward Israel.Axios reported Thursday that Azerbaijan is attempting to mediate between the countries to improve relations. The report said aides to Azeri President Ilham Aliyev told Israeli officials Erdogan was in favor of improving ties. The aides claimed that Erdogan was not anti-Israel, but had merely been under the influence of advisers who no longer hold sway.Days ago a foreign policy adviser to Erdogan, Mesut Casin, told Voice of America: “If Israel comes one step, Turkey maybe can come two steps…If we see a green light, Turkey will open the embassy again and return our ambassador. Maybe in March, we can restore full diplomatic relations again. Why not.”He added: “Establishing peace and security is very important to Israel and Turkey.”An analyst on Turkish-Israeli relations told VOA Ankara’s sudden change in stance may be a result of the coming change in US administrations.“Turkish-American relations are expected to enter a tough period, at least in the short run, considering the Biden administration’s sensitivity toward issues of democracy and human rights,” Selin Nasi said. “Given the anti-Turkish opinion prevalent in the US Congress, Turkey might be hoping that Israel can neutralize the opposition and help Turkey win Washington’s ear again.”Al-Monitor reported in late November that Turkey had recently opened a covert channel with Jerusalem in an effort to mend ties. It said Hakan Fidan, the head of Turkey’s National Intelligence Organization, had held a number of meetings with top Israeli defense officials, including the head of Mossad Yossi Cohen.Erdogan’s comments also come amid burgeoning ties between Israel and Arab nations, with Jerusalem recently agreeing to establish full relations with the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Sudan and Morocco. Erdogan has condemned those normalization deals. He and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regularly trade harshly-worded barbs, calling each other terrorists and mass murderers.Israel and Turkey formally ended a six-year diplomatic rift in 2016. The spat began in 2010 when 10 Turkish activists were killed in a violent confrontation with Israeli naval commandos aboard the Mavi Marmara ship that aimed to break Israel’s naval blockade of the Gaza Strip. Israel said the soldiers were violently attacked by those on board. Then in May 2018, after violent protests on the Gaza border in which over 60 Palestinians, most of them members of Hamas and other terror groups, were killed, Erdogan placed the blame for the deaths squarely on Israel, calling it a “terrorist state” that commits “genocide.”Turkey then recalled its ambassador and expelled Israel’s ambassador, Eitan Na’eh, and consul in Istanbul.
