But the country’s all-time temperature record of 113.2 degrees Fahrenheit in the village of Villevieille on Friday.“The whole government is mobilized,” French President Emmanuel Macron told reporters on Monday. Hours before the hijacking of the British oil tanker in the Persian Gulf, America's special representative for Iran was explaining its position to diplomats in Washington.Some 100 envoys took part in the briefing by Brian Hook, who outlined the Trump administration's initiative for maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz.Mr Hook said tensions had risen sharply and necessitated the need for a "coalition" of navies to protect their ships through the strait.His words were underlined by the seizure of the British-flagged Stena Impero in the Gulf.Elaborating on the plans, US Central Command described it on Friday night as "a multinational maritime effort", called Operation Sentinel."The goal of Operation Sentinel is to promote maritime stability, ensure safe passage, and de-escalate tensions in international waters throughout the Arabian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz, the Bab el-Mandeb Strait (BAM) and the Gulf of Oman."This maritime security framework will enable nations to provide escort to their flagged vessels while taking advantage of the cooperation of participating nations for coordination and enhanced maritime domain awareness and surveillance."The US had the day before been forced to down an Iranian drone that had flown too close to one of its navy ships. It could no longer sit idly by, he said.It was the first US military engagement with Iran after a series of increasingly serious incidents in the Gulf, and Donald Trump threatened more yesterday if Iranian planes flew too closely to its ships.Before the hijacking on Friday, a bizarre war of words broke out between the US and Iran after Tehran denied the president's claim that one of its drones had been destroyed."We have not lost any drone in the Strait of Hormuz nor anywhere else. I am worried that USS Boxer has shot down their own UAS [Unmanned Aerial System] by mistake," Abbas Araqchi, Iran's deputy foreign minister, responded in a tweet.Brig Gen Abolfazl Shekarchi added: "Despite Trump's baseless and delusional claims, all of [Iran's] drones ... have safely returned to their bases." The Revolutionary Guard released footage from what it said was the "downed drone".State TV claimed the timing notations showed it was still filming after Washington said it had been put out of action. The US said it had its own "clear evidence", but did not provide any. Mr Trump announced that the USS Boxer, an amphibious assault ship, "took defensive action" against the Iranian drone."The US reserves the right to defend our personnel, our facilities and interests and calls upon all nations to condemn Iran's attempts to disrupt freedom of navigation and global commerce," he said. A journalist aboard USS Boxer suggested that Iran had been harassing the navy ship before the drone was shot down.The reporter said an Iranian navy helicopter flew alongside them, yards from the deck, before it was chased away by a US helicopter. The convoy of six US warships passed several Iranian speedboats without incident, but was then tailed by a larger Iranian warship which came within 500 yards of Boxer.An Iranian Y-12 surveillance plane was then pursued by US helicopters before a surveillance drone came even closer and was then brought down by electronic warfare jamming.On Friday night, after reports that two British tankers had been intercepted, Bob Sanguinetti, chief executive of the UK's Chamber of Shipping, said the escalation in tensions in one of the world's most important chokepoints made it clear more protection for merchant vessels was urgently needed.He said the action was "in violation of international regulations which protect ships and their crews as they go about their legitimate business".

Iran's paramilitary Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps have seized a British-flagged and a Liberian-flagged oil tanker traveling through the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday, Britain's foreign secretary said, in what appeared to be a significant new escalation between Tehran and Western countries.Late Friday, a management company for the Liberian tanker, Mesdar announced in a statement that "the armed guards have left and the vessel is free to continue the voyage. All crew are safe and well."Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said in a statement he was "extremely concerned by the seizure of two naval vessels by Iranian authorities."Iran's State TV said on Saturday that the British tanker was seized after it collided with a fishing vessel and ignored calls from the smaller craft.Late Friday evening, following meetings in Washington, D.C., with more than 60 foreign ambassadors, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced a U.S.-led maritime security initiative dubbed Operation Sentinel "to increase surveillance of and security in key waterways in the Middle East to ensure freedom of navigation in light of recent events in the Arabian Gulf region."The initiative, according to CENTCOM, "will nations to provide escort to their flagged vessels while taking advantage of the cooperation of participating nations for coordination and enhanced maritime domain awareness and surveillance." The statement does not specify the nations that have joined the coalition.The British tanker, the Stena Impero, was crossing through the strait when it abruptly changed course and headed north towards Iran's Qeshm island, ship tracking sites showed.That tanker's owner and management companies issued a statement that the ship was "approached by unidentified small crafts and a helicopter" while in international waters. "We are presently unable to contact the vessel which is now heading north towards Iran," the companies, Stena Bulk and Northern Marine Management, said in the statement.The Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) said that its forces had seized the Stena Impero "due to non-compliance with international maritime law and regulations," according to a statement carried by Iranian state news agencies. The tanker had been guided to shore and was already in port, the statement said.The U.K. government has convened an emergency session of COBRA, its crisis committee, a senior U.K. official told ABC News, speaking on condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to comment publicly. Hunt confirmed that he was attending the meeting to review "what we know and what we can do to swiftly secure the release of the two vessels."There were 23 crew aboard the Stena Impero, according to the statement from its owner, and currently there are no reports that any have suffered injury. Hunt said both vessels had crews comprised of a "range of nationalities," but noted there were no British citizens on board either ship.The seizure comes less than a month after the U.K. seized an Iranian oil tanker off the coast of Gibraltar, accusing it of violating European Union sanctions by trying to ship oil to Syria.Iran has repeatedly vowed retaliation since then and last week a British warship intervened to chase away Iranian small boats that approached another British tanker in the Strait of Hormuz.Tensions have spiked in the strait again in the past few days after Iran said it had seized another Panamanian flagged tanker on Thursday accused of oil smuggling and the U.S. said it had destroyed an Iranian drone that approached ones of its warships. Iran has denied any of its drones were destroyed.President Donald Trump said Thursday that the U.S. would be speaking to British officials about the situation and noted that the U.S. doesn’t have many tankers passing through the area."We heard that,” Trump told reporters as he departed the White House en route to New Jersey. "The United States has very few tankers going in because we're using our own energy now. We've made a lot of progress over the last two and a half years. So we don't have very many tankers going in, but we have a lot of ships there that are warships, and we'll talk to the U.K."The government did say a U.S.-flagged ship, the Maersk Chicago, was traveling through the Strait of Hormuz late Friday and was being monitored."We have patrol aircraft operating in international airspace monitoring the situation within the Strait of Hormuz," said Lt. Col. Earl Brown, CENTCOM Chief of Media Operations. "U.S. Naval Forces Central Command has been in contact with U.S. ships operating in the area to ensure their safety."The president noted multiple times that the U.S. and U.K. don’t have a “written agreement,” but that the two countries were strong allies and that "they’ll have a new prime minister soon, which is a good thing."Later, he said that Iran was “trouble, nothing but trouble.”The White House National Security Council spokesperson Garrett Marquis said the council is aware of the reports of the tanker's seizure."We are aware of reports that Iranian boats seized a British oil tanker," he said. "This is the second time in just over a week the U.K. has been the target of escalatory violence by the Iranian regime. Spain's Podemos accepts key condition for coalition deal with Socialists-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-July 19, 2019
MADRID (Reuters) - The leader of Spain's far-left Podemos party said on Friday he was willing to give up having a post in a coalition government, potentially opening a way out of stalled power-sharing talks with acting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez's Socialists.Sanchez, who won the most seats but fell short of a majority in a parliamentary election in April, hopes to be sworn in as prime minister in a parliamentary vote next week and even with Podemos's support he will still needs some extra votes from other parties.If he loses the vote, a two-month countdown will begin until a new election is held.On Thursday Sanchez ruled out having Podemos' leader Pablo Iglesias in his cabinet, citing differences on issues including how to handle Catalonia's independence drive. Sanchez said he had offered to include other qualified people from Podemos as requested by that party.Podemos accepted Sanchez's condition on Friday."I shouldn't be the excuse for the Socialists to justify why there will be no coalition of the left. Whether I'm in the cabinet or not will not be a problem as long as there are no more vetos and Podemos' presence in the government reflects the votes we have won," Iglesias said on Twitter.After Iglesias' announcement, Socialist sources said a potential deal between the two parties was possible but stressed that Sanchez would be the one to pick his government team."Without vetoes or impositions we can reach an agreement. The prime minister will listen to proposals and will decide the team. Let's start with the content.
