Sen. Mitch McConnell's health episodes show no evidence of stroke or seizure disorder but questions linger-By Lisa Mascaro And Mary Clare Jalonick The Associated Press-Tuesday, September 5, 2023

WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell's health episodes show “no evidence” of a stroke or seizure disorder, the Capitol physician said Tuesday, but his statement still left questions about the apparent freeze-ups that have drawn concerns about the 81-year-old's situation.McConnell returned to work at the Capitol after the summer recess, and his office released a letter from attending physician Brian P. Monahan concerning the long-serving Republican leader’s health. The GOP leader froze up last week during a press conference in Kentucky, unable to respond to a question in the second such episode in a month.Walking into the Senate on Tuesday, McConnell answered no questions as he smiled at reporters. He made only passing reference to the incident during a speech in the chamber, his voice somewhat muffled.“One particular moment of my time back home has received its fair share of attention,” McConnell said. “But I assure you August was a busy and productive month for me.”Asked later in the evening if he would holding his regular weekly press conference Wednesday, McConnell simply replied, “Yep.”The episodes have fueled quiet concern and intense speculation about McConnell's ability to remain the GOP leader. He suffered a concussion earlier this year when he fell and hit his head at a dinner in Washington. It has left him visibly slower in his speech and stride, and he appeared slimmer Tuesday. The letter was the second from the Capitol physician, who cleared McConnell to continue with his planned schedule after last week's incident.“There is no evidence that you have a seizure disorder or that you experienced a stroke, TIA or movement disorder such as Parkinson’s disease,” Monahan wrote, using the acronym for a transient ischemic attack, a brief stroke. But there was no elaboration as to what did cause the episodes. The doctor said the assessments entailed several medical evaluations including a brain MRI scan and “consultations with several neurologists for a comprehensive neurology assessment.”“There are no changes recommended in treatment protocols as you continue recovery from your March 2023 fall,” the doctor said.It all comes amid a swirl of health concerns in Washington, particularly as COVID-19 cases show signs of rising heading into fall. First lady Jill Biden tested positive for COVID-19 over the weekend, but President Joe Biden tested negative. Many Republican allies have flocked to McConnell’s side, ensuring the famously guarded leader a well of support. Rivals have muted any calls for a direct challenge to his leadership."When donkeys fly,” GOP Sen. John Kennedy of Louisiana said when asked when McConnell would step down.Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, said he's supporting McConnell as leader: “We might lose from Mitch McConnell 20 seconds a day, but the other 86,380 seconds are pretty darn good.”And yet colleagues remained confused, concerned and hungering for a fuller explanation of the leader's health.“If you’re asking if I’m concerned about his health, yeah, of course I am," said Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo. “I’m also concerned about the amount of questions I get about it."Hawley said during the month at home, he was asked repeatedly about McConnell's health everywhere he went across Missouri "at the State Fair, from business group leaders, farmers, I mean everyone.”Some senators appeared to question the physician's diagnosis. But the top potential successors to McConnell's leadership stood by him.The No. 2 GOP leader Sen. John Thune of South Dakota said McConnell has his full support, as did the No. 3 GOP leader Sen. John Barrasso of Wyoming.Republican Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, another potential leadership heir, said McConnell told him last week that while he's mentally rebounded from the concussion, physically it's been a little more difficult.“It appears that it’s harder to recover from a concussion when you’re 81 years old than maybe he thought," Cornyn said. "But he feels like he’s up to the task and I think that’s the case.”Said Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas: “Age comes for us all. And Mitch is stubborn as a mule. And he’s tough.”From the other side of the aisle, Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin, the party whip, spoke with McConnell after the GOP leader delivered his remarks in the Senate.“He said, 'You know, I've taken every test they’ve thrown at me.' And he said that ‘concussion can take its toll. So I’m going through recovering from a concussion,’” Durbin of Illinois told reporters afterward.“And I told him I said I was glad to see him back, couldn’t wait to disagree with him.”Opening the Senate, Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said of McConnell, “I’m glad to see him back and doing well.”McConnell will be central to the fall schedule as Congress returns from an extended summer break for a flurry of activity, most notably the need to approve funding to prevent any interruption in federal operations by Sept. 30, which is the end of the fiscal year. Some House Republicans are willing to shut down the government at the end of the month if they are unable to enact steep spending restrictions that go beyond the agreement Biden reached with Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy earlier this summer. In leading Senate Republicans, McConnell is viewed by the White House and Democrats as a pragmatic broker who is more interested in avoiding a messy government shutdown that could be politically damaging to the GOP.McConnell has also made it a priority to ensure Ukraine continues to receive support from the U.S. as it battles Russia.A $40 billion funding package for Ukraine and U.S. disaster relief for communities hit by fires, floods and other problems, including the fentanyl crisis, is being proposed by the White House, but it is being met with skepticism from some Republicans reluctant to help as much as Biden wants in the Ukrainian war effort.McConnell’s health has visibly declined since the concussion in March, after which he took some weeks to recover. His speaking has been more halting, and he has walked more slowly and carefully.First elected in 1984, he became the longest serving Senate party leader in January. There were questions before his latest episode about whether he would run for re-election in 2026.McConnell had been home in Kentucky at the time keeping a robust political schedule, speaking frequently to the public and press. Before freezing up last week, McConnell had just given a 20-minute speech with no issues.Similarly, when he froze up during a press conference at the Capitol last month, he took a short break in his office and then returned to field about a half-dozen other questions and banter with the press.___Associated Press writers Kevin Freking, Farnoush Amiri and Stephen Groves contributed to this report._This story has been corrected to show the spelling of the doctor’s surname is Monahan, not Moanhan or Monohan.

CNN  — When John Fetterman’s team told him he was going to be Pennsylvania’s next senator late into Election Night, the Democrat laughed. He smirked. Then, struck by the emotional end of a campaign that included a near-fatal stroke just five months ago, Fetterman wept.Soon, he was standing up in front of the microphones as supporters chanted his name, nodding his head as if in disbelief. Hand over his heart, he looked out and saw his slogan on signs in the crowd: “Every county, every vote.”“And that’s exactly what happened,” Fetterman said, alluding to his campaign’s plan to narrow losing margins in rural counties while winning the suburbs and running up the score in urban Democratic strongholds. “We jammed. Nancy Pelosi’s Defense of Dianne Feinstein Is Now Posing Some Uncomfortable Questions-The former House speaker's eldest daughter is reportedly taking care of the 89-year-old Democrat, raising concerns that Pelosi is blurring the lines between friendship and politics.By Eric Lutz
May 18, 2023

Dianne Feinstein’s health has been a sensitive matter for Democrats for a while now. But the party's silence around Feinstein's capacity to serve is now being further complicated by her close ties to Nancy Pelosi, whose eldest daughter has recently been “supporting” the 89-year-old senator, the former speaker’s office acknowledged Thursday. As Politico reported, Nancy Carinne Prowda has been at Feinstein’s side since her return to Washington last week. She's helped the ailing senator recover from the shingles infection that indisposed her for nearly three months and even assisted aides in shielding Feinstein from a reporter Wednesday in a Capitol hallway. To be sure, there is nothing inherently wrong with such an arrangement: Pelosi and her daughter are longtime friends with Feinstein, and a Pelosi spokesperson told Politico that it was “entirely [Feinstein’s] own decision” to remain in office for the rest of her term. “Speaker Emerita Pelosi would never suggest otherwise,” Spokesman Aaron Bennett told Playbook. But the Pelosis’ deep involvement in supporting Feinstein—which the powerful former speaker has not disclosed in statements defending the senator against calls to resign—at the very least invites questions about Pelosi's motives, which, as one unnamed “family confidante” told Politico, might have a little something to with politics. After all, Pelosi has endorsed Representative Adam Schiff in the race to fill Feinstein’s seat, but an early retirement could lead California Governor Gavin Newsom to appoint Representative Barbara Lee—thus giving her the inside track in next year’s election. “It’s very tricky, and political, because they want her to stay,” the person said. That may be true. It may not be. But the quiet caregiving arrangement could make it difficult for the public to distinguish between Pelosi’s role as a friend to Feinstein and her role as a Washington power broker. Maybe it’s just bad optics, as opposed to a real conflict of interest. But even so, it continues to put the party's transparency in question: Democrats have mostly tread lightly around questions about Feinstein’s health, even amid concerning reports that her memory is “rapidly deteriorating"; that her staff has long had a system in place to keep her from walking the halls of the Capitol by herself; and that she seemed this week to be unaware of the prolonged absence from the Hill that intensified calls for her resignation. “I haven’t been gone,” she told reporters Tuesday. “I’ve been working,” she continued. “I’ve been here.”Feinstein's public health problems have been concerning enough. But, as the New York Times reported Thursday, the “frightening” extent of her issues goes beyond what the public has been privy to. According to the Times, the shingles that sidelined her apparently spread to her face and neck and triggered a case of encephalitis. Feinstein, the paper reports, was "far from ready to return to work when she did," and is now “struggling to function in a job that demands long days, near-constant engagement on an array of crucial policy issues and high-stakes decision-making.” (Pelosi's office did not directly respond to a question about Feinstein's health, but pointed Vanity Fair to Bennett's earlier statement that Prowda has been “supporting her in her shingles recovery” and that the friendship between Pelosi and Feinstein was “personal, not political.” Feinstein's office said in a statement to the Times that she was continuing to "work and get results for California.”)-“I feel she needs to step down,” Democratic donor and longtime Feinstein ally Susie Tompkins Buell told the Times. “And yet she isn't willing in this state of mind.”Democrats — who are surely aware of Feinstein's issues — have “the responsibility to do something" if she doesn't, Buell added to the Times, specifically calling on Newsom or Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to take action. In dancing around the issue instead—or insisting that questions about Feinstein’s capacity to serve are unfair, as Pelosi has done—Democrats are putting their own “credibility as elected representatives of the people” at risk, as Representative Ro Khanna warned in leading the call for Feinstein to retire last month. And the more her limitations in fulfilling her duties become obvious to the public, the more of a political liability it’s going to become for those who keep insisting that everything is fine.

Psychiatrist: Biden Has Symptoms of Dementia, Likely He Is 'Almost Just Holding On'  By Elizabeth Stauffer  July 26, 2021 at 4:21pm

Speaking at a White House Rose Garden ceremony to commemorate the 31st anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act on Monday, President Joe Biden forgot a congressman’s name. Shortly afterward, he became confused and called out, “Where’s Mom? Mom?”On Sunday, a reporter asked Biden, “Does immigration need to be in reconciliation? A pathway for citizenship?” What he said next is a mystery, although there has been some media speculation about what it sounded like.During his train wreck of a CNN town hall Wednesday night, the president was difficult to understand at times, leading to more questions about his cognitive abilities. Is there really anyone willing to step forward with a straight face and say there’s nothing wrong here?https://t.co/YwemWerdLS— Glenn Greenwald (@ggreenwald) July 22, 2021-Returning to the White House following the debacle, he stepped off Marine One and a reporter shouted a question to him. “And are there people who, in the Democratic Party, who want to defund the police?” she asked. The president looked at her and said, “Are there people in the Republican Party who think we’re sucking the blood out of kids?”Not a single Biden event passes without at least one memorable, and typically cringeworthy, takeaway. The president is not alright. The media may think their clever reporting is hiding Biden’s decline from the world, but the world is well aware of it. Particularly in Australia.Sky News Australia host Andrew Bolt spoke with psychiatrist Tanveer Ahmed on his show and discussed Ahmed’s take on the cognitive condition of the leader of the free world. (Two of Bolt’s Sky News colleagues delivered brutally honest assessments of Biden’s mental health earlier this year..Bolt showed viewers a clip of Biden completely losing his train of thought during a public speech.Regarding last week’s town hall, Bolt said, “for a lot of the time … there was no real trouble, no real trouble. He was answering fluently — for him. But you couldn’t ignore moments like these for instance.”Bolt then played a video of Biden absolutely fumbling an answer.“You get the feeling he’s almost just hanging on — which can be a feature of dementia,” Ahmed said.He noted Biden exhibits some symptoms of dementia such as “short term recall, losing track of your thoughts” and “confabulating.”“The other problem with Joe Biden,” he said, “is, you know, it is probably steadily getting worse in the last sort of 12, 18 months and that is a feature of dementia where you’re kind of seeing a steady, gradual decline … I don’t think it’s unreasonable to raise these questions.”“For the most part, there’s no problem at all, he’s talking fine, then suddenly boom, the memory goes,” Bolt said. “With early dementia, for instance, are you actually fine, is your judgment still perfectly OK once you get back your train of thought, you know, you recollect, ‘Oh yeah, that’s where I was going?’ Or are you really not quite up to the job? Do you believe Biden is fit to serve as the president? Yes No“Depends what stage of it is,” Ahmed replied. “In terms of trying to take in the complex concepts and taking in large amounts of information which a president would be expected to do, that would be extremely difficult for him.”Ahmed noted Biden was able to get through the debates, saying “he just sort of hung in there. So you get the feeling he’s almost just holding on, which can be a feature of dementia, where as long as you’ve got enough people supporting you, you can sort of just hold on. And I think there’s a bit of that going on with Joe Biden.”“It will become clearer probably in the next 12 to 18 months.”Last week, Republican Rep. Ronny Jackson of Texas, who was previously the White House physician to former Presidents George W. Bush, Barack Obama and Donald Trump, called on Biden to take a cognitive test.“I think he’s either going to resign — they’re going to convince him to resign from office at some point in the near future for medical issues — or they’re going to have to use the 25th Amendment to get rid of this man,” Jackson told Fox News host Sean Hannity Thursday.
