Sudan’s ruling military general said Thursday he would visit Israel if invited, seeking to push ahead with stalled normalization efforts two years after the former foes agreed to establish ties.Speaking to The Associated Press on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Gen. NEW YORK — In his UN speech Friday, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas noted the “positive development” of Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid’s voicing support for a two-state solution during his address the previous day. But he spent the bulk of his own remarks to the same body on Friday repeating grievances against Israel’s government and security forces for their treatment of the Palestinians as well as the international community for failing to “protect” his people.“When we hear something positive, we acknowledge it,” Abbas said, referring to remarks by both Lapid and US President Joe Biden in favor of the two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. “I heard them supporting the two-state solution and we’re thankful for that.”“But the real test to the seriousness and credibility to this stance….is for the Israeli government to go back to the negotiation table immediately,” the PA president said, adding that Israel must cease all unilateral actions such as settlement building, demolition of homes, evictions and “killings.”Israel “is, through its premeditated and deliberate policies, destroying the two-state solution,” he told the General Assembly.“This proves unequivocally that Israel does not believe in peace,” he added. “Therefore, we no longer have an Israeli partner to whom we can talk.”“You should at least temporarily stop [unilateral measures]… and if [the negotiations] fail then you can go back to whatever you want to do,” he said.Much of the speech focused on lambasting Israel for a host of alleged crimes he said it committed during and since the establishment of the Jewish state, accusing it of operating an “apartheid” regime against the Palestinians.”Abbas, 87, said Israel has been engaged in a campaign of land confiscation and was giving the military “total freedom” to kill or otherwise use excessive force against Palestinians.“This is the truth: they are an apartheid regime,” he said.He accused Israel of carrying out “50 massacres” — nearly repeating a line that got him roundly condemned in Germany last month, when he accused Israel of committing “50 massacres, 50 holocausts” against Palestinians over the years. Analysts have maintained though that the decision has more to do with fears of significant gains by Hamas terror group at the expense of his Fatah movement.The PA president pointed to votes by the Palestinian Liberation Organization’s council in 2015 to suspend the recognition of Israel and end security coordination with the IDF, which Israel and the US credit for maintaining stability in the West Bank.Abbas said that he has tried to stall the implementation of those resolutions in hopes that there would be a breakthrough in diplomatic negotiations with Israel. “We told them to wait for a while and be patient [because] maybe they’ll change their stance,” he recalled.The PA leader did not go as far as to explicitly state that he would suspend the recognition of Israel as he has threatened to do in the past. However, he indicated that he would not be able to hold off critics for much longer and called on the international community to act.Several times throughout the nearly 40-minute remarks, Abbas implored the international community to back his initiative for the Palestinian UN mission to receive full-member status at the UN. Since 2012, it has held observer status, which has allowed it to join international bodies, but in most regards is largely symbolic.The Biden administration has warned the PA not to advance the initiative, indicating that it would use its veto in the Security Council in order to prevent a vote in the General Assembly where it would more likely pass.Abbas suggested that the US position was unlikely to change, leaving him with few other options. However, he continued to object to the stance, saying that Washington’s support for a two-state solution was only in words and not in action. As Hurricane Fiona heads north to Atlantic Canada, experts are anticipating it to be a historic, record-breaking storm in Canada."Where it fits in the history books, we'll have to make that determination after the fact, but it is going to be certainly a historic, extreme event for eastern Canada," Bob Robichaud, warning preparedness meteorologist with Environment Canada told reporters on Friday."It's very powerful at the present time, it's still a major hurricane and it's only 900 kilometres away from us, and it's getting bigger. So all that momentum is trapped within the storm, it's very difficult for something like that to actually wind down as it's approaching."Robichaud added that the storm size is bigger than Hurricane Juan from 2003 and comparable in size to 2019's Hurricane Dorian, but Fiona is stronger.On Thursday afternoon, the warning preparedness meteorologist said this is "going to be a storm that everyone remembers."Brett Anderson, senior meteorologist with AccuWeather, says this looks like it's probably going to be the strongest storm, in terms of low central pressure, on record for Canada."Almost every computer model is telling us it's going to be at least 935 millibars or lower, even down into the 920s," Anderson told Yahoo Canada. There is also a "high likelihood" of storm surge for parts of Nova Scotia, the Gulf of St. Lawrence and western Newfoundland."The southwestern part of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, in those north to northwesterly winds, that's where the water is going to be pushed on shore and it's going to be close enough to the centre of the storm where pressure is going to also contribute to that storm surge," Robichaud said. "Right now, our modelling suggests that storm surge, depending on the area, could be anywhere from about 1.8 to 2.4 metres, so significant rises in water level because of that surge.""It also suggests that maybe in some areas, the peak surge may not be totally timed with the high tide However, any kind of delay in the storm in arriving will result in that peak surge actually arriving a little bit later, which could coincide with time with high tide... So tomorrow morning is when we're we have the highest concern for potential coastal flooding."The Environment Canada forecast guidance suggests that 100 to 200 mm of rainfall will be present, but closer to the path of Fiona, more than 200 mm is "likely," but those estimates do include the rainfall from Thursday night and Friday.Anderson warned that this amount of rain will cause flooding and with winds anywhere from 160 to 190 kilometres per hour, particularly in Prince Edward Island and eastern Nova Scotia, there is going to be tree damage, and likely several power outages."We could be dealing with...widespread power outages across Prince Edward Island, western Nova Scotia, southwestern Newfoundland, that could last days, if not weeks," Anderson said."Stay home, do not travel is absolutely necessary... The folly of cutting down trees and other plants for short-term profit afflicted the ancient world as well as our modern one, with new research suggesting that the extensive use of Arava desert vegetation to fuel the famous King Solomon’s copper mines at Timna caused both the industry, and the local environment, to eventually collapse.The ecological destruction wrought then can still be felt today, the research team, from Tel Aviv University, found.The Timna Valley is located roughly 20 kilometers (12.5 miles) north of the Gulf of Eilat in the southern part of the scorch-dry Arava Desert, in the far south of Israel. Nestled between sheer cliffs, it has a natural ecosystem that forms part of the Saharo-Arabian Desert Belt. This is characterized by sparse vegetation, mainly along seasonal stream beds and in oases. In this case, the Evrona and Yotvata oases are both located ten to 15 kilometers (six to 7.5 miles) from the Timna Valley.Since the Chalcolithic (fifth millennium BCE) period, but particularly during a roughly half-millennium stretch within the Late Bronze and Iron Ages (thirteenth to ninth centuries BCE), this extreme environment was the site of one of the most important copper production centers in antiquity.Weakened by internal struggles, Egypt had withdrawn from the region, leaving the lucrative industry in the hands of local Edomites.“Today we know that copper production actually peaked here at about the time of Kings David and Solomon,” said Prof. Erez Ben-Yosef, director of the archaeological excavations in the Timna Valley, referring to the Biblical monarchs. “The Bible never mentions the mines as such, but it does tell us that David conquered the area of Timna, known at the time as Edom, placing garrisons throughout the land, so that the Edomites became his subjects, and that his son Solomon used huge quantities of copper for building the Temple in Jerusalem.”Copper was extracted from the ore via smelting in earthenware furnaces at a temperature of 1,200 degrees Celsius (nearly 2,200 degrees Farhenheit).The furnaces were destroyed after every smelting event to extract the valuable metal. The remaining charcoal and metallurgical debris was dumped onto slag mounds, layers of which accumulated on top of one another, to eventually provide a chronological record.Setting out to explore the environment’s role in the sustainability of the Timna copper industry, researchers from Tel Aviv University’s Department of Archaeology and Ancient Near Eastern Cultures analyzed more than 1,200 samples of charcoal debris. (Charcoal burns at a higher temperature, and retains its heat for longer than fresh wood).They focused on material from slag mounds dated towards the end of the eleventh century BCE and located within two fortified sites.The team discovered that during the early part of the period they were studying, three quarters of all the charcoal was derived from species of acacia trees and the branches and roots of the white broom, both of which would have been available nearby.Both have thick fibers and high wood density, offering high-calorific and high-burning material.The hot-burning charcoal of the white broom is referred to in the Hebrew-Bible (Psalms 120:4), which states: “He will punish you with a warrior’s sharp arrow, with burning coals of the broom bush.” The shrub’s roots appear in Job 30:4 as a source of food.As time passed, however, from around the middle of the tenth century and on, these species evidently ran out, forcing laborers to search further afield for plants less suited to charcoal production — among them date palms from oases, and pistachio trees and junipers which today are found only in higher and rainier areas.It would have cost money and time to transport wood from distances of up to 100 kilometers (62 miles), across the steep terrain, the researchers noted.By the middle of the ninth century BCE, after the consumption of an estimated 30,000 tons of wood, the copper mines in this area shut down.In one mound alone, the team found charcoal equal to at least 4,100 acacia trees and more than 185,000 white broom bushes.The researchers assumed that the Timna Valley’s climate in the Iron Age was similar to today’s.But a wider range of desert and savanna plants might have been available, as suggested by charcoal remnants of species such as the toothbrush tree, Salvadora persica, (whose sticks are traditionally used as teeth cleaners), which no longer grows in the valley.More plants growing then would have meant more water within the local ecosystem, stored mainly within the plants’ roots and stems, and soils, and playing a key role in the water cycle, the researchers inferred.Furthermore, many of the species relied upon by the Iron Age smelters, including acacia and white broom, would have maintained soil stability, enabled plants to germinate properly, and protected against land degradation, in addition to providing food and fodder for wild and shepherded animals.The removal of so many plants for the copper smelting would have “irreversibly affected the system’s ability to retain moisture,” the team
