He won’t even face the citizens he has discriminated against," Fox News contributor Lisa Boothe tweeted. Trudeau condemned the convoy last week and said it is composed of a "small fringe minority" of people who hold "unacceptable views."Other critics, including Elon Musk, have mocked him for the comment following videos showing thousands of people protesting the mandates. Three of the injured were treated on scene, and the fourth was treated at hospital but released.

GoFundMe pulls plug on fundraiser for Ottawa convoy protesters-Canadian Press-Feb 04, 2022

The move could deny participants a vital source of money as Ottawa braces for a new wave of protesters slated to arrive in the national capital this weekend.GoFundMe said late Friday it supports peaceful protest and that it believes this was the initial intention of the Ottawa event. The crowdfunding site said it now has evidence from law enforcement that the demonstration “has become an occupation, with police reports of violence and other unlawful activity.”GoFundMe said the fundraiser has been removed from its platform because it violates the site’s terms of service, which prohibit the promotion of violence and harassm. An initial $1 million was released to organizers earlier this week but, given how things have evolved, GoFundMe will issue refunds to donors and work with organizers to send remaining funds to “credible and established charities.”The Ottawa Police Service thanked GoFundMe for its decision.“We want to thank รข†•gofundme for listening to our concerns as a City and a police service,” it said on Twitter. “The decision to withhold funding for these unlawful demonstrations is an important step and we call on all crowdfunding sites to follow.”Mayor Jim Watson also expressed his gratitude. Watson said in light of the unlawful behaviour that has transpired in the last few days, GoFundMe came to the right decision in support of the city and its residents.“These protesters have been holding our city hostage for a week now, and I’m hopeful that limiting their access to funding and resources will restrict their ability to remain in Ottawa,” Watson said on Twitter.“I am imploring similar crowdfunding platforms to take the same position and not enable the group in its fundraising efforts, which would deal a blow to our efforts to put an end to this occupation.”Ottawa police are putting more officers on the street and trying to seal off the city’s downtown core in anticipation of another influx of protesters this weekend.Downtown residents have endured a week of blaring truck horns, blocked streets and racial taunts from aggressive participants. Many city-dwellers have expressed frustration with the fact little has changed days into the protest, branding it an occupation.Ottawa lawyer Paul Champ has filed a proposed class-action lawsuit on behalf of thousands of residents seeking millions of dollars in damages and an injunction “prohibiting the continuation of the nuisance.”Residents were bewildered Thursday that demonstrators had constructed a wood building and fuel storage pen in Confederation Park, just southeast of Parliament Hill. The National Capital Commission, responsible for the park, is working with Ottawa police on “addressing the next steps on site,” said commission spokeswoman Valerie Dufour, who could provide no details.City solicitor David White said Ottawa had not filed for a court injunction to curb the actions of protesters. He added the city continues to work with other agencies “so that we are prepared and in a position to act quickly” in the event one is deemed necessary to support police plans.Policy Chief Peter Sloly announced a “surge” of about 150 extra police officers to central areas of the city paralyzed by the protest that has been going on for a week.Sloly said the patrolling officers will focus on mischief, hate, harassment, threats and other intimidating behaviour to send a clear message: “The lawlessness must end.”The protest against vaccine mandates and other pandemic measures, which has immobilized the city’s downtown with scores of large trucks, is an “increasingly volatile and increasingly dangerous demonstration,” Sloly told a news conference Friday.“We’re absolutely committed to bringing this demonstration to an end.”However, Sloly warned that demonstrators near Parliament Hill remain highly organized, well-funded and extremely committed to resisting attempts to end the demonstration safely.Police plan to contain the demonstration in the area immediately south of the Hill through concrete barriers and large machinery to control roadways throughout the downtown core. They are also looking at closing bridges and highway off-ramps, while incoming protest trucks will be directed to designated parking zones outside the core, Sloly said. Illegal parking by demonstrators could result in bylaw enforcement, removal and impound.Fencing has been placed around the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier near the Hill. A woman was photographed jumping on the tomb last weekend, sparking a police probe.Police expect as many as 400 more trucks and up to 2,000 people on foot will arrive this weekend for the protest. In addition, as many as 1,000 people could join counter-demonstrations downtown.Plans for demonstrations to oppose the protesters were in flux Friday amid concerns such actions might not be safe.Sloly had blunt words for anyone intent on causing trouble: “Do not bring weapons, do not bring firearms, do not come here to cause harm. Do not come here to break the law. You will be held to account.”A few dozen downtown residents gathered Friday for a community safety walk, a daily event co-ordinated by concerned city councillors.“For the last week, we’ve been held hostage, we haven’t felt safe,” said resident Sarah Duff. “And there have been extremists that have been allowed to roam our streets. Enough is enough.”Sloly acknowledged residents’ concerns but said police had done “absolutely the best we can to keep this city safe.”“We need to do better. We’re committed to doing better. We now have more intelligence and allies to do better.”The Ottawa chief said his empathy for citizens was rooted in personal experience, noting police were investigating death threats that he and other city officials had received this week.Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino said late Thursday the RCMP had approved Watson’s request for Mounties to support city police. The minister made it clear Friday that Ottawa police remain the force of jurisdiction and called Sloly’s new plan reassuring.“No one is above the law,” Mendicino said. “And I think that the many reports that we’re hearing in Ottawa from people who live here, who work here, who are trying to raise their families, who are trying to get around, is that they can’t enjoy those freedoms.”Sloly said local, provincial and national intelligence personnel were working together to analyze information.“We have increased ability to identify and target protesters, and supporters of protesters, who were funding and enabling unlawful and harmful activity,” he said.Teams are gathering details including vehicle registration, driver identification, insurance status and other related evidence that will be used in prosecutions.Every unlawful act, including traffic and insurance violations, “will be fully pursued,” Sloly said.Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has been harshly critical of the protesters, calling on them to leave town and allow residents to resume their daily lives.Tamara Lich, a protest organizer, told a Thursday news conference the departure of the demonstrators would “be based on the prime minister doing what is right: ending all mandates and restrictions on our freedoms.”

Trudeau forced into hiding as 50,000 anti-vax 'Freedom Convoy' truckers storm capital- | Updated: 30 January 2022, 09:43-By Sophie Barnet

Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau and his family have been forced into hiding amid security concerns as thousands of truckers protesting vaccine mandates poured into Ottowa.Up to 50,000 protesters flooded the Canadian capital on Saturday to protest vaccine mandates, masks and lockdowns, prompting police to prepare for the possibility of violence and warn residents to avoid downtown. Some anti-vaxxers - who compared vaccine mandates to fascism - parked on the grounds of the National War Memorial and danced on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.Others carried signs and flags with swastikas and some used the statue of Canadian hero Terry Fox to display an anti-vaccine statement, sparking widespread condemnation. The organisers of the protest have called for the forceful elimination of all Covid-19 restrictions and vaccine mandates and some called for the removal of Mr Trudeau. They are, in part, protesting a new rule that took effect on January 15 requiring truckers entering Canada to be fully immunised against the coronavirus. The United States has imposed the same requirement on truckers. The Canadian Trucking Alliance said a great number of the protesters have no connection to the trucking industry, adding they have a separate agenda to push. The vast majority of drivers are vaccinated.Amongst the sea of protesters were expletive-laden signs targeting Mr Trudeau, who has been moved to a secret location. His office said it will not comment on his whereabouts for security reasons. The prime minister's itinerary for the day usually says he is in Ottawa if he is at home, but on Saturday it said "National Capital Region". One of Mr Trudeau's children has Covid-19 and the prime minister has been isolating and working remotely.Politicians have also been advised to lock their doors amid reports their private homes may be targeted. The statue of Fox, a national hero who lost a leg to bone cancer as a youngster, then set off in 1980 on a fundraising trek across Canada, was draped with an upside down Canadian flag with a sign that said "mandate freedom".The Ottawa freedom protest begins. pic.twitter. com/ Hu2dAruaj — Aaron Ginn (@aginnt) January 29, 2022-Mr Trudeau retweeted a statement from The Terry Fox Foundation that said "Terry believed in science and gave his life to help others".Meanwhile, Canada's Defence Staff chief General Wayne Eyre said those involved in the demonstration "should hang their heads in shame", tweeting: "I am sickened to see protesters dance on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and desecrate the National War Memorial. Generations of Canadians have fought and died for our rights, including free speech, but not this. Those involved should hang their heads in shame."Eric Simmons, from Oshawa, Ontario, told the Associated Press that all vaccine mandates should be ended. He said: "They're not effective, they're not working. It's not changing anything. We can't keep living like this. People are losing their jobs because they don't want to get the vaccine".Mr Trudeau has said Canadians are not represented by this "very troubling, small but very vocal minority of Canadians who are lashing out at science, at government, at society, at mandates and public health advice''.Some opposition Canadian Conservative politicians served coffee to the protesters, with Conservative party leader Erin O'Toole meeting with some truckers. The protest has also attracted support from former US President Donald Trump and some Fox News personalities.Mr Trump told a rally in Conroe, Texas: "We want those great Canadian truckers to know that we are with them all the way. They are doing more to defend American freedom than our leaders by far."Former US Ambassador to Canada Bruce Heyman said the threat against democracy is not only happening in America."Both the use of the swastika and the confederate flag are symbols of hate. So very sad to see these symbols anywhere and especially in Canada," Mr Heyman said, who was the US envoy under former President Barack Obama.

CANADA | News-'So many angry people': Experts say online conversation around trucker convoy veering into dangerous territory-Ben Cousins-CTVNews.ca Writer-Published updated Friday, January 28, 2022 3:37PM EST

As a growing group of truckers and supporters make their way to Ottawa in a protest against vaccine mandates, experts say the rhetoric online concerning the convoy is getting increasingly worrisome. The group of truckers and concerned citizens began a cross-country trip to Ottawa over the weekend, in protest of vaccine mandates in the country. The group expects to arrive in Ottawa this Saturday. The movement has since gathered steam nationwide, as videos show highway gatherings in support of the truckers, but some experts worry the online conversation surrounding the convoy has veered into dangerous territory.“There are people who genuinely believe that this is overreach by the federal government, but there are also a lot of other groups that are involved and individuals who are involved who have a long history of very overheated rhetoric,” Kurt Phillips, founder and former lead writer for Anti-Racist Canada, told CTVNews.ca in a recent phone interview.Organizers for the convoy insist they are abiding the laws and intend for a peaceful rally in Ottawa this weekend.Even though the organizers say it will be peaceful, Phillips said he’s seen people online calling the trucker convoy Canada’s version of the U.S. Capitol insurrection on Jan. 6, 2021, for the truckers to ram their trucks into Parliament, and people encouraging the hanging of politicians.“Some of the organizers are trying to get people to dial back the rhetoric, but the genie's already out of the bottle,” he said. “People are energized in an incredible way right now, and it's hard to see something not happening. I don't know if it would be on the scale of Jan. 6 in the United States, but there are so many angry people.”Peter Smith, a journalist working with the Canadian Anti-Hate Network, said he’s seeing a lot of similarities between this latest convoy and a similar truck convoy from 2019 that was meant to protest federal pipeline policies.“Right from the start, the largest groups … have been organized and managed by people who have connections to those types of groups like the Yellow Vests, the separatist Western movements,” he said. “So right from the start, this began as part of fringe politics.”Smith said he’s seen people using the movement to accuse politicians of pedophilia and to accuse the government of being illegitimate.“This has become the focus of the far right,” Smith said. “It's not to say that there's not people involved who have a ‘heart-in-the-right-place’ mentality, but this has become -- like the health restrictions -- an important opportunity to capitalize on people's justifiable discontent with the government.”“Whatever happens in this movement, this protest will be a propaganda tool that's probably used for years.”The rhetoric has also engulfed some politicians. Former Conservative leader Andrew Scheer called Prime Minister Justin Trudeau the “biggest threat to freedom in Canada,” while Pierre Poilievre, Conservative MP in the Ottawa region, recently called the truckers vaccine mandate a “vaccine vendetta.” People’s Party of Canada Leader Maxime Bernier called Canada’s COVID-19 measures “fascist” and “authoritarian.”The convoy has even gathered the attention of Donald Trump Jr.“When we push back against the insanity, we can win, and that’s how all this ends,” he said in a Facebook video.“This is a genius idea. We need to see more of this in the U.S.”Smith said that while the language used by some politicians is far from the most extreme comments he’s seen, it’s these comments that can lend credence to the more extreme sentiments.“The main organizers have been explicit about saying there won't be violence, but you look at some of the streams and comments made by others -- many of whom are planning to attend -- they're almost hoping for it,” he said.Phillips said a lot of people from different groups that would not normally associate with each other have banded together on this instance, in part because so much money has been raised.“They seem to be gravitating towards this for a variety of reasons, might be because of the energy that's involved in it. It might be for the grift, the chance of making a profit off of it,” he said.As of Tuesday evening, more than $4.5 million has been raised for the trucker convoy through GoFundMe, though the funds have been temporarily frozen. Both Smith and Phillips are concerned for what might happen when the truckers arrive in Ottawa this weekend.“I think the government needs to take this seriously,” Phillips said.
