A biometrics-enabled personal gun safe that is implicated in the gunshot death of a child in the United States has been recalled.Models of Fortress Safe‘s keeps that use the same fingerprint-scanning software are being pulled from the market. Each vault also has a key lock.It is possible for an adult to think the safe is locked when it is not.The Consumer Product Safety Commission yesterday recalled 61,000 biometric safes, pistol vaults, gun cabinets and other personal safes. They are sold under the brand names Fortress, Cabela’s, Gettysburg and Legend Range & Field.Officials say owners should immediately remove the Chinese-made safe’s battery and lock their firearm with the key until they can get a free replacement.A 12-year-old boy died in 2022 when he was able to open a Fortress safe despite it being paired with an adult’s fingerprint. Faulty programming has resulted in 39 reported instances of faulty locking, according to the government, which has not said if any other injuries have occurred.While not a popular purchase for U.S. gun owners, there is a market for biometric gun safes, including in schools.

Safety, privacy professionals caution against facial recognition in US schools-Oct 20, 2023, 1:10 pm EDT    | Chris Burt

As facial recognition deployments and restrictions proliferate among American schools, observers are calling for sober evaluation of claims made by biometrics vendors. There have been 33 school shootings resulting in injury or death in the U.S. so far this year, GovTech reports, but the assessment that informed New York’s move to ban facial recognition in state schools says facial recognition “may only offer the appearance of safer schools.”Kenneth Trump, President of consulting firm National School Safety and Security Services, tells GovTech that so far schools have largely addressed “political and community relation problems, not so much school safety problems” with facial recognition.Challenges for schools to navigate when implementing facial recognition include data privacy concerns, demographic disparities found in some algorithms and systems, and how to safely and responsibly handle the biometric data of children.Notably, a school implementation of facial recognition is the scenario the Biometrics Institute presents in its Biometrics Essentials training course on ethics and good practices.Trump says he has seen one-time grants to schools spent on technology without adequate training or ongoing funding in the past, with the result that the technology does not have the intended effect.GovTech refers to research indicating some students are uncomfortable with the level of surveillance in schools, and the risk of mission creep, as technology deployed for safety is used to enforce attendance and pick-up rules.Fingerprint biometrics, in contrast, have benefited students in school deployments to speed up lunch lines, according to Amelia Vance, President of the Public Interest Privacy Center and chief counsel for the School Superintendents Association’s student and child privacy center.For New York, however, Vance believes banning facial recognition in schools was the right decision. Will the EUDI Wallet go global? Experts discuss standardization-Oct 20, 2023, 12:25 pm EDT-| Masha Borak

As Europe prepares to launch its European Digital Identity (EUDI) Wallet, its creators have been busy building up foundational frameworks and standards. The task is even more important as the wallet has ambitions beyond the continent: Standardization organizations are working on making the EUDI accepted even across the European Union’s border.The EUDI will allow each European citizen to access public and private digital services with a tap on their mobile phones. In July, the project kicked off four pilots involving more than 250 private and public organizations across Europe. The European Commission has earmarked €46 million (roughly US$49 million) for the pilots.“I think this is one of the biggest opportunities and maybe even the last one we have if we want to create the European sovereign framework and solutions from within Europe,” says Franziska Granc, Project Manager for Secure Digital Identities at Nimbus.Granc spoke at the 9th Trust Services and EID Forum in Vienna last week, which focused on eIDAS2, the regulation governing the EUDI Wallet, and Trust Services under the Network and Information Security Directive (NIS2).Cross-border uses of the EUDI Wallet could be a huge benefit for businesses, according to Viktoria Ruubel, Managing Director of Digital Identity at Veriff. A single wallet that is recognized everywhere could give access to cross-border financial, e-commerce and other services to citizens.Projects such as the OpenWallet Foundation (OWF) also give hope that the EUDI Wallet will integrate easily into global networks, the panelists said at the conference. At the same time, many of the standards that are being adopted into EUDI are based on international and open standards.“It’s not something ad hoc created specifically for eEIDAS, there are these international standards and international protocols and formats, which should hopefully pave the way for this cross-border interoperability,” says Kotryna Urbanaite, Decentralised Identity Strategy Manager at Accenture.But before global expansion, much more work needs to be done. To make the technology attractive even to the most skeptical parts of the public, its builders will need to prove it is secure and private. They will also need to overcome previous poor experiences with the interoperability of EUDI. Here is where proper certifications may come into play.The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) and the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) have created a number of detailed standards to support the new digital wallet and eEIDAS, says Santino Foti, Vice Chair of the ETSI Technical Committee (TC) Electronic Signatures and Infrastructures (ESI).“With the principle of eEIDAS regulation we have global access for citizens and enterprises, trustworthy identification schemes, we have electronic attestation attributes for cross border sharing of that information of identity and there is a stronger push towards mobile devices to use digital wallets,” says Foti.The agency is hoping that in the future it will be able to work with other agencies on issues such as interoperability of credentials, identity proofing and biometrics, levels of authentication and certification and protection profiles.Security of the EUDI Wallet is also a top priority. In July, the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA) released a report with new recommendations for standard makers focusing on digital IDs, including the EUDI Wallet.“On top of all the efforts that have to be done and that are ongoing when it comes to regulation and harmonization, we need to make sure that the primary device that is used by millions of people in the field will by default offer the proper level of security,” says Fabien Courtiade, Director of Product Management at Qualcomm.This will include ensuring that security is taken care of at the hardware level, including camera sanders and fingerprint sensors which will record biometric information during enrollment, he adds.

A digital rights organization says the popular view of biometric identification and surveillance is backward and the result is the commodification of people for government control and business profit.Access Now, which is particularly focused on the impact of AI on economically disadvantaged communities, has published a report with what it sees as unnecessary risks of biometrics-based tools.Instead of viewing the tools as mere collection systems, executives with Access Now see algorithms as programmed categorizers. They impose a desired order on what is by definition a spectrum of qualities, behaviors, reactions and identities.Biometric systems “are used to create baselines of what constitute ‘normal’ behaviors and bodies,’ ” according to the report. This “further reinforces unequal treatment of people whose bodies and behaviors do not adhere” to how those wielding the software consider normal.And Access Now leaders say negative results in the private sector can grow when military and intelligence officials take notice of an algorithm.They cite an article in the investigative news publication ProPublica about an Ohio police man turned entrepreneur pushed software that, it is claimed, could detect someone lying when calling 911 about a violent crime they, in fact, committed.The accuracy of the software is questionable, but, according to ProPublica’s reporting, the FBI became interested.As reports of success grow, increasingly dubious biometric product ideas are growing, too. Access Now cites the example of researchers who claimed criminality can be determined by analyzing facial features.That, the group says, is directly related to the racist-influenced practice of phrenology. Japanese conglomerates Fujitsu, Hitachi, NTT Data and Toppan Digital are among the companies partnering with Japan’s largest financial group Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG) to create a decentralized identity (DID) and verifiable credential (VC) consortium.Also joining the consortium are Anderson Mori & Tomotsune law firm, systems integrator Itochu Techno-Solutions Corporation (CTC) and Hakuhodo Key3, a web3 services arm of marketing and innovation company Hakuhodo.The task of the consortium is experimenting with decentralized identity solutions and streamlining Know Your Customer (KYC) processes in finance. The companies may also explore self-sovereign identities (SSI), an approach to digital identity that gives individuals control over their data.The group is hoping to attract other companies, according to blockchain-focused publication Ledger Insights.In June, MUFG, one of Japan’s largest banks, announced the launch of stablecoin issuance platform Progmat Coin, designed for launching Japanese yen-pegged stablecoins in compliance with the country’s Japan’s strict regulations, including identity verification requirements. Its trust arm, Mitsubishi Trust Bank, is collaborating with Binance to offer a new stablecoin in the market built on the Progmat Coin platform.This year’s report from the World Economic Forum (WEF) noted that decentralized ID could solve issues for digital identity such as protecting sensitive data.

Biometrics are the preferred method of authentication for respondents from every country to a FIDO Alliance survey, but old-school passwords persist as the dominant form of authentication.The Alliance conducted its third annual survey of 10,000 consumers in the U.S., U.K., France, Germany, Australia, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, India and China. The resulting report, FIDO’s 2023 Online Authentication Barometer, highlights some key findings.The report found that password usage without two-factor authentication (2FA) remains dominant. However, when given the option, users want other authentication methods, with most preferring biometrics. A majority of consumers feel biometrics are more secure than legacy authentication methods.Another key point mentioned was the frustration consumers have with old-school memorized passwords. This method is causing most people to abandon purchases and give up accessing services online because they can’t remember their passwords. The survey findings show this is 15 percent more likely than in 2022.Awareness of other authentication methods, like passkeys, continues to grow, with nearly one-third now at least somewhat familiar with the concept.The survey also reports that consumers feel less safe in the digital world. A majority of consumers perceive online scams and suspicious messages as becoming more frequent and sophisticated. The FIDO report states this is likely fueled by AI.The report does not include recommendations beyond the data. EU parliament formally adopts digital visas-Oct 20, 2023, 3:45 pm EDT-| Masha Borak

Europe has made one of the final steps towards adopting digital visas for the Schengen area.On Wednesday, the European Parliament voted to support the law on digitalization of visas, which will enable applications for Schengen visas through a single online platform. The Visa Information System (VIS) platform will require the collection of fingerprint and face biometrics for first-time applicants.The finalization of the legislation is expected on November 12, according to sources quoted by Euractiv. Voluntary use of the application system is expected to be available from 2025, while mandatory use will likely be implemented in 2031 or 2032, the sources said.The new, fully digital visa system is aimed at third-country nationals and residents of non-Schengen EU member states such as Bulgaria and Romania. The unified online platform will be managed by the European Union Agency for the Operational Management of Large-Scale IT Systems in the Area of Freedom, Security and Justice (EU-LISA).The new cryptographically signed visas will also be safer and more difficult to forge, according to the EU Parliament.”Europe is currently lagging behind our peers in digital visa procedures,” says Matjaž Nemec, EU Parliament rapporteur in charge of the proposal. “With this reform, we will catch up, and the whole process will become cheaper and easier for applicants. It will also make it harder to abuse the system, making the process safer.”EU institutions reached a deal on the regulation in June. The new system will replace the current analog visa stickers with digital ones. Applicants will still be able to submit paper applications in case of issues accessing the online platform.

JTA — On a normal Shabbat, Orthodox Israelis turn off radios, silence cell phones and — if they have one — lay down their gun. These past two sabbaths were not normal.Israelis had special dispensation from the country’s top rabbis to bear arms. They were told to leave communication devices on, albeit at low volume. And synagogues were instructed to make sure someone brought a phone.The decree from Israel’s Chief Rabbinate offered a striking window into how war is changing the religious strictures that are typically baked into the cadences of Israeli life. In keeping with centuries of Jewish tradition, a wide range of rabbis are issuing opinions on everything from kosher food to transportation to the laws of how husbands and wives relate to each other.The opinions are almost all rooted in the core Jewish idea that pikuach nefesh, or the preservation of life, overrides nearly every other religious law. That principle is what made it not only possible but obligatory for Jews who are observant of halacha, or Jewish law, to break the laws of Shabbat in order to respond to Hamas’s bloody onslaught on October 7 — and to continue to depart from traditional halacha in certain circumstances.All of the Chief Rabbinate’s Shabbat decrees about keeping radios and phones on were meant to ensure that Orthodox Jews were able to hear safety alerts and instructions from Israel’s Home Front Command, which is responsible for civil defense. Israel is being barraged nonstop with rockets from Gaza, has carried out the largest military reserve call-up in its history, and is on the brink of a major ground force offensive in Gaza.The Chief Rabbinate also permitted departures from the country’s regular restrictions on public transportation. Most Israeli cities have never had public transit on Shabbat or Jewish holidays due to opposition from Haredi Orthodox lawmakers and voters. Its national carrier, El Al, also does not operate on Shabbat.So when Hamas attacked, on Shabbat and a holiday, public transportation across the country was not functioning. That meant reservists had to make their way to their bases on their own.Last Shabbat, trains ran on Shabbat through select stations across the country due to the ongoing emergency situation. The trains stopped only in Tel Aviv, at Ben Gurion Airport and Haifa — where the United States had sent a ship to retrieve its citizens starting at 9 a.m. Sunday.Rabbis in Israel also granted permission for El Al to fly on Shabbat, marking the first time the airline has operated on Shabbat since the 1982 Lebanon War. The airline said in a statement that it had received permission from “relevant halachic authorities” to operate flights — two from the United States, one from Bangkok and one from Madrid — to carry reservists, rescuers, medics and members of the security forces “whose arrival into the country is vital.”Wartime has also, in some cases, prompted more stringent observance of Jewish law. Food prepared and served by the Israeli army must be certified kosher by the military rabbinate, so after 2,000 meals that it donated to Israeli soldiers were thrown away, the Tel Aviv hotspot Ha’achim asked President Isaac Herzog to help it get kosher certification. After retraining staff and overhauling its kitchen, the restaurant now produces and distributes meals to soldiers full-time.“I don’t eat kosher food, but I respect it,” co-owner Yotam Doktor told Israel Hayom. “Leaving our soldiers begging for food before they go into battle is an impossible situation.”While the interaction with Jewish law has been most stark in Israel, where the crisis is acute and where rabbinic authorities have influence over state law and policy, rabbis in the Diaspora have also issued opinions related to the war.In the United States, Rabbi Herschel Schachter, one of the leading Modern Orthodox rabbis, ruled last week that worshipers should insert Avinu Malkeinu into their Shabbat liturgy. The plaintive prayer is typically recited only during the High Holidays and considered at odds with the joyous tenor of Shabbat, when it is generally not recited. Notably, when Yom Kippur falls on Shabbat, Avinu Malkeinu is still omitted from nearly all services.Within Israel, in addition to state rabbis issuing national decisions, respected rabbis with smaller public pulpits have begun considering wartime questions as well. Several of them have weighed in on the issue of kosher food for the armed forces.Rabbi Avraham Stav has authored books on Jewish law and is also an army reservist in the 439th artillery battalion, which is now called up for duty in Israel’s south. He has continued to answer questions from the front, including about the kosher status of homemade donated food sent to the army bases.Whether homemade food is kosher can be hard to ascertain, since there is no kosher certificate attached to a home kitchen, Stav wrote on Facebook. But he said that according to Jewish law, if a person attests that their food is kosher, even with just a handwritten note, the food should be considered kosher, so long as there is no reason to suspect that the person was saying so out of ignorance or disdain. All the more so, he wrote, “out of sincere concern for observant soldiers.”Turning to another rabbi for a second opinion, Stav asked Rabbi Asher Weiss, one of the leading halachic authorities in Israel, who replied, Stav says, “Of course.”Another rabbi who has drawn attention for his wartime legal opinions is Yoni Rosensweig, an Orthodox rabbi who leads a synagogue in Beit Shemesh and has built a substantial following both due to his legal opinions and his mental health advocacy. Rosensweig, too, ruled that soldiers and others in need should be lenient when assessing the kosher status of homemade, donated food. But a ruling on another topic ignited a backlash.On the first day of the war, Rosensweig received a question about whether a man heading into battle could hug his wife goodbye if she was at a point in her menstrual cycle when touch would otherwise be prohibited under traditional Jewish law.Rosensweig’s answer, posted on Facebook, was clear: Yes, provided that the embrace was for comfort only.“There is no greater emotional need — both for the husband and for the wife — than this hug before embarking on a military operation to defend the people and the land,” he wrote.The backlash was swift. For days, Rosensweig fended off criticism and responded to questions about how he could rule in contravention of mainstream opinions about Jewish law. After several days, he sought to put an end to the fighting with a new post.“The reality is that I’m impressed that most of the public didn’t wait for me for this ruling at all. They did what they thought was right,” he wrote. “Those who wanted gave a hug, and those who didn’t — did not. And that makes sense. He met on Sunday at the King David Hotel with the family of a slain 22-year-old IDF soldier of British descent,  Sgt. First Class Yosef Malachi Guedalia, and with members of the Haran family from Kibbutz Be’eri, 8 of whom are missing or taken captive, and 2 of whom were killed on October 7.On October 17, the local Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem issued a statement blaming “the loss of hundreds of innocent civilians” on Israeli airstrikes. Welby would not back that figure, saying only “I have no idea how many civilians there were, I’ve heard so many different numbers.”The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza immediately blamed the blast on an Israeli airstrike. However, Israel produced evidence showing it was caused by a failed rocket launch from Gaza by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad terror group, an assessment endorsed by the United States, which has said it has its own data to this effect.“Of course, Palestinian families cry out in protest,” Welby said in response to a question from the media about Gazan casualties. “Who wouldn’t when they’ve lost their children? Let’s not run to judgment and blame straight away, let us lament and mourn with them.”He also decried those pro-Palestinian demonstrators marching in London and other cities on Saturday who accused Israel of genocide.“You have no understanding of what you’re saying,” said Welby. “Wait, think. listen, mourn, cry out for peace. We’re all one family and we all feel each other’s pain. The United States has warned Iran and its allies against any regional escalation in the wake of Israel’s war with Hamas, two top US officials said Sunday, hours after the Pentagon moved to step up military readiness in the region.With tensions mounting, Washington also announced Sunday it had ordered non-emergency staff to leave its embassy in Iraq.“We are concerned at the possibility of Iranian proxies escalating their attacks against our own personnel, our own people,” Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on CBS News. “We expect there is a likelihood of escalation.”“No one should take advantage of this moment to escalate to further attacks on Israel or, for that matter, attacks on us on our personnel.”US troops have been attacked in Iraq and in Syria with drones and rockets in separate incidents this past week. A group of Iranian-backed militias in Iraq warned that US forces “must leave immediately” or their bases in Iraq and elsewhere in the region will continue to come under attack.Blinken said the United States, which has sent two carrier groups to the eastern Mediterranean, was “taking every measure to make sure that we can defend them. And if necessary, respond decisively.”His words doubled down on an earlier message from Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, who warned of a “prospect of significant escalation of attacks on our troops” in the region.Their comments came amid growing fears that Iranian proxy Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, or other terror groups supported by Tehran, might take advantage of the tense situation over Gaza to enlarge the conflict and further stretch Israel’s military.But Austin, speaking to ABC News, issued a stern warning: “If any group or any country is looking to widen this conflict and take advantage of this very unfortunate situation that we see, our advice is: Don’t.”“We maintain the right to defend ourselves and we won’t hesitate to take the appropriate action,” he added.The comments from the two senior members of US President Joe Biden’s cabinet came hours after the Pentagon said it was upping readiness in the region in response to “recent escalations by Iran and its proxy forces.”Austin ordered the activation of air defense systems and notified additional forces that they may be deployed soon.But Austin also acknowledged that the ground invasion Israel says it plans to launch could well take longer than the time it took him to remove the Islamic State from power in Mosul, Iraq when he was the head of the US Army’s Central Command.“Urban combat is extremely difficult. Leading a bipartisan US Senate delegation of five Republicans and five Democrats to Israel, South Carolina Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said in a press conference Sunday that “destroying Hamas is non-negotiable,” threatening to open a war front on Iran’s borders if it moves to broaden the current war in Gaza.“What is winning? For the terrorist organization to be destroyed, for the people of Israel to have the sense of peace they’ve lost, for the Palestinian people to have hope they don’t have, and for the Arabs and Israelis to end a conflict that would make the world better,” said Graham in Tel Aviv.The senators, who had originally planned to be in the region to promote Israeli-Saudi normalization, stressed that they have a positive vision for the region after the Palestinian terror group is destroyed.“How does this end? A U.S. Navy destroyer in the Red Sea on Thursday shot down multiple missiles and drones launched by Iranian-backed Houthis in Yemen, a Pentagon official said, adding that the missiles were heading north "potentially to targets in Israel."The USS Carney intercepted three cruise missiles and about eight drones, using missiles of its own -- SM-2s, according to Pentagon spokesman Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder, who acknowledged that information on the missiles -- and their targets -- remained limited."We cannot say for certain what these missiles and drones were targeting, but they were launched from Yemen heading north along the Red Sea, potentially to targets in Israel," Ryder said during a press briefing.Though information was lacking, the Pentagon officials said they do not believe the USS Carney was a target of the Houthi missiles or drones.The missiles and drones were taken down over water rather than land in the early evening hours Thursday local time, the Pentagon said. There were no reports of casualties aboard the Carney, but the event was a significant show of military force in the violence-rocked region."This action was a demonstration of the integrated air and missile defense architecture that we built in the Middle East and that we are prepared to utilize whenever necessary to protect our partners and our interest in this important region," Ryder said. It’s far beyond time to drop the pretense.There never was a Palestinian nation and there can never be a Palestinian state.The Mideast cannot stabilize — much less move towards peace, prosperity, and human development — as long as the pernicious lie of "Palestine" persists.The matter is hardly subtle.The PLO Charter, written in 1964, states clearlythat the people designated "Palestinians" are Arabs who see themselves as an integral part of the Arab nation. Their identity as something uniquely Palestinian is cultivated as a critical weapon deployed in opposition to Zionism.Hamas — the specific villain in this week’s barbarism — is even clearer.According to the Hamas Charter (1988), Palestine is an Islamic waqf, a mere administrative unit within the empire of Islam — a faith that recognizes no legitimate subdivision into nations.From inception, the entire Palestinian self-definition, and its entire raison d’être, has been the negation of the Zionist dream for an independent Jewish state in the historic Jewish homeland.To this day, Palestinianism combines the inner workings of a hate group with the outer trappings of a nationalist movement.The statements of Palestinian leaders, the Palestinian press, the Palestinian educational systems, and Palestinian entertainment are replete with demonization of the Jews, incitement, calls for violence, even advocacy of genocide.Palestinians raise their children to hate Jews and to glory in those who kill Jews — as the world is seeing in real-time video. Palestinian society, from top to bottom, allocates greater resources to ensuring that their people despise Jews than to encouraging their people to help themselves.Palestinianism on the ground today remains far, far more concerned with destroying Israel than it does with building Palestine; hatred of the reviled other is far more important than love of self.This duality is unique.No other movement features such a complete misalignment of inner functioning with outwardly stated goals.No other allegedly nationalist movement has focused so little on nation building and so much on fostering hatred.Understanding this dual nature of Palestinianism is critical to appreciating why all attempts to extract reasonable and expected behavior from Palestinian leaders ultimately fail.When it comes to representation in global organizations or diplomatic negotiations, the movement is fully equipped to function as expected.At the end of the day, at the point of agreement, compromise, and implementation, it lacks any of the necessary tools.What Hamas is now doing is far more honest than anything that the leaders of the Palestinian Authority have stated — in English, for Western consumption — in the 30 years since Oslo.Indiscriminate barbarism unleashed in a fury against Jews and all who would stand with them has always been the dream.No leader of this hate movement would ever dare abandon it.The hatred/nationalist duality also explains why the line between anti-Zionism and antisemitism is so thin: the dominant force in the anti-Israel movement is a century-old, virulent, anti-Jewish hate group.It’s nearly impossible to stand against Zionism without standing in favor of Palestinianism.
