Makers of natural-health products say they are bracing for widespread layoffs and millions of dollars in losses after Canada's pharmacy regulators issued a surprise directive recently urging druggists to stop selling unlicensed natural remedies.

The order affects thousands of herbal treatments, multi-vitamins and other products, most of them waiting for approval from Health Canada under a backlogged, five-year-old program to regulate natural-health goods.The National Association of Pharmacy Regulatory Authorities (NAPRA) says pharmacists cannot be assured the products are safe until they are granted a government licence, and should not sell them in those circumstances.Pharmacists are obliged to hold the health and safety of the public or patient as their first and foremost consideration, said the association's recently issued position statement.Representatives of the natural health industry, however, have reacted angrily to the directive issued last month, predicting it will have little impact on patient safety, while triggering an economic crisis for their members.We are talking about job loss, we are talking about a lot of income loss, we are talking about product stuck in warehouses that cannot be sold,Jean-Yves Dionne, a spokesman for the Canadian Health Food Association, said in an interview.A statement issued by the association calls the directive self-serving and contrary to federal government policy. It has taken a sledge hammer to a finishing nail, the group said. It will create confusion for consumers. It is the wrong thing to do.

NAPRA is comprised of representatives of the provincial colleges of pharmacy that regulate the profession. It is now up to the individual provinces to implement the statement. The Ontario and Quebec colleges have already done so, with Ontario pressing pharmacists to not buy or order any more of the affected products, and its neighbour pushing for druggists to also remove unlicensed product already on their shelves, Mr. Dionne said.Pharmacies, as surprised by the directive as anyone, are caught in the middle, said Jeff Poston of the Canadian Pharmacists Association.One of the questions that everybody is asking in the pharmacy world is, Why now? As far as people can determine, nothing has significantly changed.

A spokesman for NAPRA was not available for comment.

The controversy revolves around Health Canada's natural-health products regime, launched in 2004 to vet treatments that had been virtually unregulated before, in a new system some critics said was still too lax. As it ploughed through tens of thousands of applications for licences, the department said manufacturers could continue selling their products, so long as they had at least applied for approval.

The department has issued about 18,000 natural-health licences, while at least 10,000 products are still waiting for certification, industry representatives said. The whole process was supposed to be done by this January.The natural-food association argues that it makes no sense for the pharmacy regulators to try to block sales of products awaiting licences, when Health Canada itself has said they can be sold pending an approval decision.The industry is worth an estimated $1.5-billion to $2-billion a year, but many producers are small operations with sales of $1-million to $2-million annually and could be decimated by the directive, Mr. Dionne said. He cited a call he got last week from a manufacturer in Nova Scotia who sells two products -- a homeopathic remedy for diabetes-related pain and a vitamin-based pill -- that are waiting for approval and could be forced off the shelves.

They are really panicking out there,he said.

Some manufacturers could sell their products in health-food stores instead, but others rely exclusively on pharmacies, said Mr. Dionne.Gerry Harrington of Consumer Health Products Canada, another industry group that represents natural-health producers, said his members strongly support the regulations. NAPRA may be targeting others, though, who are trying to evade any government oversight, he said.There is a sub-set of companies out there who have no intention of complying with the regulations, who have taken advantage of the interim approach to essentially ignore the regulations,Mr. Harrington said.Some companies have chosen ... to lobby politically for an essentially unregulated or minimally regulated industry.

With Health Canada poised to let food makers fortify a wide range of new products with vitamins and other nutrients, a group of leading emergency-department doctors is calling for vitamins to be treated like over-the-counter drugs because of their potentially dangerous side effects.The physicians from children's hospitals in British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario also recommend that vitamin A no longer be allowed as an ingredient in multivitamins, citing evidence that it can cause birth defects in high doses.The researchers stress that vitamins are generally safe and healthy when consumed appropriately. But with many Canadians convinced that taking large quantities of certain supplements can stave off various medical problems, the doctors caution that the public needs to know more about the downsides of high doses or improper chronic use.Those effects range from liver damage caused by too much vitamin A to hardening of the arteries linked to vitamin C, the physicians outline in a paper just published in The Annals of Pharmacotherapy. Some can also interact riskily with other drugs, undermining blood-clotting ability, for instance, when combined with the popular painkiller Ibuprofen.We don't want to wait for something bad to happen, said Dr. Ran Goldman, head of emergency at the B.C. Children's Hospital and the study's lead author.The doctors take aim as well at a proposal being considered by Health Canada to give food manufacturers freedom to fortify a wide range of products, including snack foods and pop, with vitamins and other nutrients. A department official reiterated in a recent letter that the government is moving toward the change.

The idea is unacceptable,given the already high consumption of vitamins in society, the emergency physicians say.Health Canada, though, says that it has serious concerns about their study and how it portrays regulation of vitamins. In fact, the nutrients are covered by the government's new natural-health products rules, and they require substances to undergo assessment before being approved and to carry detailed side-effect information, the department said in an email response to questions.The doctors suggest the five-year-old natural-health regulations are not appropriately stringent for products such as vitamins. Heather Boon, a pharmacy professor at the University of Toronto who studies natural-health products, said that is not true, though she noted that spotty application of the regulations so far means safety labelling of vitamins now varies from product to product.

The problem is that people think vitamins and they automatically think They must be good for you, and more must be better,and that's when people get into trouble,she said.We need to be conscious that if you take too much, you could run into trouble.Carl Carter, regulatory affairs chief at the Canadian Health Food Association, said consumers should be better informed about vitamins -- because of their benefits.Canadians are underexposed to vitamin D, particularly in the winter months,he said.From a safety point of view, there could be as much as a 70% reduction in the risk of cancer through the appropriate use of vitamin D.

The study cites evidence that as many as a third of Americans use vitamins, suggesting that the figures are similar in Canada.A survey by the same group in Toronto found that 32% of children who showed up at an emergency department had taken vitamins in the previous three months, though parents often fail to mention such use.The doctors outline five vitamins they feel should be treated like drugs-- A, E, D, folic acid and niacin -- based on safety research produced over the past 40 years.Large doses of niacin, for instance, can cause digestive symptoms ranging from nausea to peptic ulcers, the paper notes.Many scientists are now recommending people in northern climates boost their consumption of vitamin D-- naturally produced when sunshine strikes the skin -- as evidence mounts that it helps prevent various cancers and other illness.Excessive amounts of it, though, can cause problems including kidney damage and anemia, the study says.National Post, with files

This recession isn’t going to end as long as Obama is in office. The recession is an essential part of the Progressive plan to transform the foundation of the country from capitalism to socialism. The unemployment rate of 9.7 percent represents only about half of the workforce that would be working if jobs were available. Jobs in the private (productive) sector continue to decrease, while government and SEIU (Service Employees International Union) taxpayer paid jobs continue to increase.With less and less revenue from private sector production and more and more government dependence, you can see where this is headed. You can also see why our government keeps borrowing more money to pay for liabilities that aren’t being covered by tax revenue.Eventually, the loan interest rate becomes unaffordable, or credit is denied altogether, and the nation’s economy collapses through default. That’s when the socialists take over and begin confiscating 50% or more of your income in taxes as a necessary step toward economic recovery.They’ll tell you it’s for the common good of the country, but if they cared about the common good of the country, they never would have caused this to happen in the first place. But they will gladly hold you and your income liable for their reckless policies and spending. We must hold them accountable first before this happens. We must elect a Congress in November that will put a stop to this abuse of the American citizens.

In his weekly radio address, Obama said he had a meeting with insurance executives who were unable to tell him (to his understanding) why insurance rates keep going up. Why does Obama have to ask them this question? Answer: because Obama doesn’t understand how business works, and health insurance is a business. It is a product provided to those who can afford it, no different from buying a car. It is not a right anymore than owning a car is a right.Insurance company rates are directly proportional to insurance company costs. Rates go up because the costs go up and because the value of the dollar continues to decline as government policy keeps borrowing and printing more currency. In spite of a rise in insurance company rates, their profit margin still remains under 3.5% which goes to the stock investors who are the American people.That’s not much profit and certainly doesn’t show corporate greed. Obama’s healthcare plan does nothing to reduce the costs, but instead attempts to subsidize them with taxpayers’ money which will only make the problem worse.Obama needs to demonize insurance companies and anyone else in the private sector that he wants to destroy in order to promote his socialist agenda. Sure, there are some problems with insurance companies for the chronically ill and those with pre-existing conditions, but then the insurance companies have a responsibility to their stockholders to show a profit, not a loss. If they have to pay for costs that exceed income, then the rates have to go up.Obama accuses them of greed for trying to meet their costs and would have them operate at a loss and drive them out of business to force more people to look to government for their healthcare. That is not the American way.

A large portion of those costs come from lawyers constantly filing frivolous medical lawsuits. Even if the cases never go to court, it still costs a lot of money to defend them and settle out of court. If we really want to lower the costs of healthcare then we need to get James Sokolove, and others like him, off of our TVs, and put a stop to this television advertising for medical lawsuits. By doing so, we remove the cause of expensive defensive medicine being practiced by doctors, which adds even more to the costs.This synthetic president said in his State of the Union address that we were sent here to serve our citizens, not our ambitions. Maybe Obama needs to start listening to his own speeches. He has done nothing but serve his own ambitions and special interests since taking office. He must be aware that nationalized healthcare is not popular with the American people, yet he continues to push it. How is that serving our citizens? Is he really listening to anyone other than Andy Stern, president of the SEIU? If the power of persuasion doesn’t work, then we’ll use the persuasion of power.—Andy Stern, another Marxist advising Obama and influencing national policy. The danger of this healthcare bill is that it is so massive that repealing it would be nearly impossible after the bureaucracy has been installed, the money allocated, private insurers going out of business, and the system transformed. The next Congress must begin the repeal process immediately before more irreversible damage is done.Obama has been talking about my healthcare plan, but it turns out that Obama’s healthcare plan doesn’t even exist. It was nothing more than an outline which couldn’t be scored by the CBO for lack of any details. I suspect that it was the plan written and submitted to Obama by Andy Stern and the SEIU which laid down the guidelines for the Senate and House bills.The process now being used by Obama and Congress is unconstitutional. The Constitution requires that all bills that raise revenue for the government must originate in the House:

Article I, Section 7: All bills for raising revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives; but the Senate may propose or concur with amendments as on other Bills.But this unconstitutional president is telling the House to pass a bill that raises hundreds of billions of dollars in taxes and borrowing from foreign countries, but originated in the Senate.On top of that, they intend to use reconciliation in the Senate to get the bill passed with only 51 votes. Reconciliation was created to resolve budget issues because the Constitution requires Congress to pass a budget every year. It was never intended, nor has it ever been used, to get policy issues passed.Pelosi doesn’t have enough votes to pass the Senate version of the bill, so to get enough Democrat votes in the House, they were told that the bill will be fixed after it has been passed into law. This would result in the law created by this bill being something different from what was passed by Congress. Senate Republicans are telling the House members don’t count on that fix happening.Latest subversion of constitutional law, Rep. Louise Slaughter
Now, the latest subversion of constitutional law comes from Rep. Louise Slaughter who is suggesting a new rule that would consider the bill passed if the House passes a corrections bill that would make changes to the Senate bill. This means that the House wouldn’t actually vote on the healthcare bill at all.

The Constitution is very clear on this point:…But in all such cases the votes of both Houses shall be determined by yeas and nays, and the names of the persons voting for and against the bill shall be entered on the journal of each House respectively.Obama is becoming desperate. He is becoming unglued, knowing that his signature legislation is failing, instead of becoming the most important accomplishment (the only accomplishment) of his career. He is demanding that Congress pass this abomination by March 18 before they go on Easter recess.He knows what lawmakers are going to face in their local communities from their constituents who do not want this legislation passed, and he knows it will effect their willingness to vote for this unpopular bill. He knows it won’t stand a chance of passing after lawmakers hear from their constituents face to face.If this bill fails, Obama will be seen as the failure that he is. If it passes, he will be seen as the enemy of American freedom, liberty, and prosperity. He has already crossed the line, so now he has only one way to go. Force his socialism upon America and make it permanent and irrevocable while he still has the power of the presidency.

He is determined to get this done at any cost or violation of the law. To Obama, the status quo is constitutional government. He has always hated our Constitution and intends to change or abolish it to suit his Marxist ideology.This will be done by making small changes here and there along with big ones like this healthcare bill, the Cap & Trade bill, to be followed by the Immigration Reform bill. All of these issues have been rejected by the American people but Obama doesn’t care what the American people want.Obama’s transformation of the country means serving his own ambitions of a socialist dictatorship. The citizens of America must continue to show their disapproval of Obama, his communist ideology, and his socialist healthcare agenda. -A 27-year CIA veteran, who chaired National Intelligence Estimates and personally delivered intelligence briefings to Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush, their Vice Presidents, Secretaries of State, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and many other senior government officials (Raymond McGovern) said I think at simplest terms, there’s a cover-up. The 9/11 Report is a joke, and is open to the possibility that 9/11 was an inside job.

-A 29-year CIA veteran, former National Intelligence Officer (NIO) and former Director of the CIA’s Office of Regional and Political Analysis (William Bill Christison) said I now think there is persuasive evidence that the events of September did not unfold as the Bush administration and the 9/11 Commission would have us believe. … All three [buildings that were destroyed in the World Trade Center] were most probably destroyed by controlled demolition charges placed in the buildings before 9/11.(and see this).

-A number of intelligence officials, including a CIA Operations Officer who co-chaired a CIA multi-agency task force coordinating intelligence efforts among many intelligence and law enforcement agencies (Lynne Larkin) sent a joint letter to Congress expressing their concerns about serious shortcomings,omissions, and major flaws in the 9/11 Commission Report and offering their services for a new investigation (they were ignored)

-According to the Co-Chair of the Congressional Inquiry into 9/11 and former Head of the Senate Intelligence Committee, Bob Graham, an FBI informant had hosted and rented a room to two hijackers in 2000 and that, when the Inquiry sought to interview the informant, the FBI refused outright, and then hid him in an unknown location, and that a high-level FBI official stated these blocking maneuvers were undertaken under orders from the White House (confirmed here)

While the U.S. government and federal authorities busy themselves targeting American citizens as domestic terrorists, it seems they couldn’t care less about the fact that the military of a foreign power is flying around American airspace with wanton abandon.Residents of Falcon Heights, a south Texas border town, saw a Mexican helicopter hovering over a house shortly after 6pm on Tuesday night. The chopper conducted surveillance for about 15 minutes before flying back to Mexico.They had armored individuals in the chopper, open ramp, very military looking, in style and preparation, said Zapata County Sheriff Sigifredo Gonzalez Jr.It’s proof the Mexican military sees no boundaries, reported local KRGV News’ Stephanie Stone, adding that the incident wasn’t the first of its kind and wouldn’t be the last.The markings I understand read La Marina which is equivalent to the Mexican Navy,said Gonzalez.

Local residents who saw the chopper refused to talk about it on camera, but the news report showed images of the helicopter.KRGV contacted nearly a dozen government agencies in an attempt to get answers. After contacting the the FAA about the chopper, KRGV were told to talk to the Customs and Border Protection, who said they knew about the incursion but were apparently unconcerned.State and local authorities refused to return phone calls about the incident after they were also contacted by KRGV.A U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman says that a Mexican military helicopter crossed the border into south Texas late Wednesday afternoon before returning to Mexico without landing,reported the Associated Press.Richard Pauza said Thursday that customs officers had spotted the helicopter over U.S. territory near the Falcon Dam in Zapata County sometime after 5 p.m. Pauza said he had no other information.While the government trains federal authorities and law enforcement personnel that U.S. citizens are the biggest threat, they couldn’t give a damn about the fact that the military of a foreign government is violating U.S. airspace when it pleases.Indeed, this only helps the process of acclimating the American people to accept the sight of foreign troops on U.S. soil, a danger Congressman Ron Paul has characterized as a horrible precedent which is part of the NAFTA scheme and globalization and world government.Imagine if Soviet bombers or Iranian fighter jets were caught cruising around Los Angeles or Washington D.C. Would the government be at all concerned? Or are they too busy worrying about gun owners, Tea Party activists and Ron Paul supporters?

Stern backs $100bn IMF climate fund plan

London, 11 March: A climate fund proposed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to raise $100 billion a year by 2020 has won support from climate change economics guru Nicholas Stern.Speaking in Nairobi on Sunday, IMF managing director Dominique Strauss-Kahn said: Sustainable growth in developing countries will require large-scale, long-term investments for climate change adaptation and mitigation. The Copenhagen Accord suggests that $100 billion a year is needed by 2020, over and above existing aid commitments. This will be difficult to do with the standard approach – a series of pledging conferences for decades to come.He said that, ultimately, financing will come from budgetary transfers from developed countries, drawing on scaled-up carbon taxes and expanded carbon trading mechanisms. However, these revenue sources will take time to be put in place, so an IMF Green Fund could act as a bridge to large-scale carbon-based financing in the medium term. In a subsequent interview with wire service AFP, Strauss-Kahn said that the IMF is going to publish a working paper on the Green Fund in the next couple of weeks. However, in the Nairobi speech, he stressed that the IMF would not manage the fund.

Stern, chair of the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment at the London School of Economics, said: The Green Fund is a creative and constructive idea which shows that the International Monetary Fund recognises clearly the very serious risks that climate change creates for future global economic growth and development.Late last year, George Soros, the former hedge fund manager and now billionaire philanthropist, suggested that such a fund tap Special Drawing Rights, the international reserve assets held by the IMF to supplement its members' official currency reserves. However, Soros’ proposal was for a modest $100 billion over 25 years, rather than the $100 billion per year by 2020 apparently on the table from the IMF. Why Italy faces a derivatives time bomb

Financial markets are gripped by the role derivatives have played in Greece's debt crisis, but Italy also has a derivatives time bomb, and hundreds of cities are in the €24-billion blast zone.Many local governments eager to cut financing costs for years rushed to sign up for complex derivatives contracts, even when the terms were in English. But some cities, facing big losses when interest rates go up, are now trying to pull out of derivatives and suing the international and local banks that arranged the deals.In a test case, a judge in Milan will decide in coming weeks whether to try 13 people and four banks – UBS, Deutsche Bank, Germany's Depfa and JPMorgan Chase & Co – on aggravated fraud charges. The case stems from a derivatives swap over a €1.68-billion 30-year bond, the biggest issued by an Italian city.Milan, Italy's financial capital, is facing a €100-million loss on the deal, city officials say. Milan is also suing the banks for €239-million in overall liabilities.In the southern region of Puglia, prosecutors are seeking to bar Merrill Lynch, a unit of Bank of America Corp, from government contracts for two years. The move stems from derivatives losses from €870-million in regional bonds.JPMorgan, UBS and Deutsche have denied wrongdoing, and Depfa has declined comment. Merrill has not commented.

Almost 500 small and large Italian cities are facing mark-to-market losses of €2.5-billion on the contracts, according to the Bank of Italy. Analysts say that figure will balloon when interest rates go up.Most of the contracts involved switching fixed rates on loans to variable ones with banks.With the economic crisis, the problem has been lessened a bit (with lower rates) ... But in fact with a rate rise it becomes an even worse problem, said Fabio Amatucci, an expert on local government finances at Milan's Bocconi University.The European Central Bank is expected to start hiking rates at the end of this year or early next year.U.S. and European officials are looking into how U.S. investment bank Goldman Sachs Group Inc. may have helped Greece disguise the size of its budget deficit through the use of cross-currency derivatives in 2001.The Italian deals differ somewhat from the Greek case since the instruments were usually for switching rates on loans, but Italy stands out because of the vast number of cities, regions and public entities – even a theatre association – that turned to them from 2001 to 2008.The Bank of Italy put the notional value of derivatives contracts at €24.1-billion in June 2009. However, Il Sole 24 Ore business newspaper on Thursday cited Treasury data to put the overall figure at €35.5-billion – a third of local governments' debt – when wider criteria were used.Although central bank figures show 467 local governments had derivatives contracts at the end of September, Mr. Amatucci believes the real number could be around 3,000 as more deals emerge.The government banned new contracts in 2008 pending new rules. Economy Minister Giulio Tremonti has said there is no effect from derivatives held by local governments.Local governments rushed into derivatives in part because they helped ease the rigidity of a 2001 law that bars taking on new debt except to finance investment.But another big draw was the upfront payment many cities got in advance for signing revamped agreements, usually done without a bidding process, analysts said.

Renegotiated deals shoved back payment and costs in a political manipulation of signings, said Giampaolo Gialazzo with the Tiche consultancy in Treviso.Revised deals also carried increasingly restrictive terms and higher costs for municipalities and other local governments.Greece did nothing more than get itself money right away and then pay it back slowly. Local administrations in Italy did the same thing,said Massimiliano Palumbaro with CFI Advisors in Pescara.Pescara, a southern Italian city, itself took out a total of €108-million in interest rate swaps and is suing UniCredit SpA and BNL, a unit of France's BNP Paribas, over them. UniCredit had no comment, while BNL had no immediate comment.When rates are low, as they were when many contracts were agreed to, local authorities using a variable rate could find their costs shrinking. However, when rates rose, officials would find themselves owing more money.Milan has argued, as have many other local administrations, that the contracts were murky, carried hidden costs and banks had failed to explain them.However, a source close to the issue said Milan could not argue that it was ignorant about derivatives since the 2005 swap replaced a contract that had been renegotiated repeatedly.The city also has wide securities markets experience given its joint control of listed utility A2A, the source said.With banks putting in place a complex deal that had to be overseen for 30 years with hefty back-office costs,the city could not expect that the banks were going to take that position for free,said the source.Despite the court cases, Milan is still interested in derivatives. The city council said on Wednesday it was studying a switch from a variable rate on the contract to a fixed one.

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - With plans for the EU's new diplomatic corps entering their final stage, EU capitals have quietly begun to negotiate over who will take the top jobs up for grabs.The office of EU foreign relations chief Catherine Ashton is aiming to submit a draft organigram for the External Action Service (EAS) to EU diplomats in Brussels on 17 March.According to an EU official acquainted with the document, Ms Ashton's office wants the service to have nine senior posts: A secretary general, two deputy secretary generals and, below them, six director generals.At the top of the hierarchy, Ms Ashton will mainly do shuttle diplomacy on the model of her predecessor, Javier Solana, who clocked up over 2.6 million air miles in his 10 years in office. The EU's 11 special representatives, such as Marc Otte on the Middle East, will report directly to her.

The secretary general is to stay in Brussels and run the EAS on a day-to-day basis.

He will oversee the work of the six director generals and a number of autonomous EAS cells: the EU's Military Staff, responsible for planning overseas military missions; SitCen, an intelligence-sharing bureau; an internal security unit; an internal audit unit and a department handling communications and relations with other EU institutions. The two deputy secretary generals will not have administrative duties, freeing them up to replace Ms Ashton at internal EU meetings or second-tier international events. EU capitals are wary of openly lobbying for their candidates due to the accepted wisdom that early runners do not finish first.But diplomatic sources say that the French ambassador to the US, Pierre Vimont, the secretary general of the French foreign ministry, Pierre Sellal, and a senior aide to German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Christoph Heusgen, are the current favourites for the secretary general job. Messrs Vimont and Sellal both have strong EU credentials, having served as France's ambassadors to the union during two previous French EU presidencies, in 2000 and 2008, respectively. Mr Heusgen was the top political advisor to Mr Solana.The argument in favour of a French candidate is that French official Pierre de Boissieu, who currently runs the EU Council, will cede his place to a German official, Uwe Corsepius, in 2011. We have a lot of good candidates for all the levels of the service. But it's premature to talk about these issues, a French diplomat said. On the other hand, French EU official Christine Roger is already being lined up to become president of the EU's Political and Security Committee, a senior EU Council body handling security decisions. Germany has got little by way of top jobs in the new-look EU so far, with its EU commissioner, Guenther Oettinger, taking the medium-weight energy portfolio. It would be a bad sign of Germany's level of interest in EU foreign policy if it does not have a senior figure in the EAS, an EU diplomat said. Meanwhile, Sweden's EU ambassador, Christian Danielsson, is being talked about as a possible deputy secretary general.

The six director generals will each run a department composed of several hundred officials, forming the main pillars of the EAS architecture. One directorate is to take care of budget and personnel. A second one is to handle global affairs such as climate change, human rights and democracy promotion. A third one is to manage EU relations with multilateral bodies, such as the UN and the G20, as well as legal and consular affairs.The remaining three are to be split on geographical lines: A fourth directorate is to cover EU neighbourhood countries, accession candidates, Russia, Central Asia and the Middle East. A fifth one is to span industrialised countries such as the US, Canada, Mexico, China, Japan and Australia. The sixth one is to take care of developing countries in Latin America, Africa, Asia and the Pacific Ocean.
The European Commission and the European Parliament are also circulating draft organigrams with competing ideas for the EAS structure. There's probably a draft organigram on every floor of every EU building in Brussels, another EU diplomat said.The newer EU member states are pushing for senior EAS posts to be open to a free competition based on merit. But it is clear that the top nine appointments will be political decisions.An EU official told this website that new member states can realistically aim to fill some of the director general-level posts only. The contact added that Polish centre-right MEP Jacek Saryusz-Wolski and the director of the Diplomatic Academy in Warsaw, Andrzej Ananincz, are in the frame.

Georgia flags up problems with new EU structures

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS – Georgia cannot put itself on hold until the new EU arrangements created by the Lisbon Treaty start working, but needs to flag up the persisting problems with Russia's strong foothold in the two breakaway enclaves of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, a senior Georgian official told EUobserver.There is a change of administration in Washington and a reset policy towards Russia, a new EU with its new structures which is not yet a mature process – there are some other priorities on the international arena, but still, this conflict didn't disappear. It's still here,Temur Yakobashvili, Georgia's minister for re-integration said while in Brussels earlier this week to promote his government's new strategy of engagement with the rebel regions.A year and a half ago, Georgia made headlines when Russia engaged in a full-scale military invasion after the Caucasian republic itself invaded South Ossetia. The war ended with a ceasefire brokered by French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who was then chairing the rotating EU presidency. The Russians then pledged to withdraw to the previous positions before the war and scale back their military presence, as well as allow EU monitors to enter the two breakaway republics and diffuse tensions.But both Abkhazia and South Ossetia subsequently declared independence, which Moscow recognised. Russia also boosted its military presence, established permanent bases and place agents of the FSB, the national intelligence agency, on the border.Moscow says the withdrawal requirements under the ceasefire agreement are no longer valid since the two became independent republics and invited Russian troops on their soil.

Georgia's new engagement strategy with the rebels avoids the Russian issue, as well as the subject of the status of the self-proclaimed independent republics, which can be discussed only in parallel and after repatriation of refugees and the full de-occupation of Georgia, Mr Yakobashvili explained.It's not a re-integration strategy, it's an engagement strategy that is part of the re-integration process. What we are trying to do is to deploy the human-centric policy. Issues of health care, for instance. Education, trade, information, confidence building – all these measures will not solve the conflict, but they are important to the people's lives,he said.

While pointing to continued provocations, humiliations and attacks on strategic infrastructure such as high power lines, Mr Yakobashvili stressed that the military option in solving the conflict was off the table. We always stated there is no military solution in confrontation with Russia. That was very clear from the beginning. We got there because we had to react to an invasion,he said. The document itself lays out measures ranging from establishing bus lines crossing the dividing lines to renovation of hospitals and schools. Tbilisi offers Abkhaz and South Ossetian residents access to its health care and social security system and pledges to look at ways to address specific concerns, including to documents certifying birth, death, marriage, and education. It also sets out perspectives to enable international travel for the largely Russian-passport holding population.

EU structures still unclear

Asked if he was meeting officials in the European Commission or staff working for foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, Mr Yakobashvili shrugged his shoulders.I have some meetings, actually I don't know now who is who here [in Brussels]. But I am meeting people who are dealing with Georgia, he added.He also had moderate expectations from the upcoming EU presidencies of Hungary and Poland next year, which are both set to emphasise Europe's Eastern Partnership, the bloc's new policy towards its eastern neighbours. It seems to me that the new arrangements don't allow the presidencies the same role that they used to have. We are also waiting to see how it all works, he said.But we can't put ourselves on hold and do nothing, meanwhile.Meanwhile, Mr Yakobashvili was happy to have gained the support of the French foreign ministry in holding a conference on the implementation of his government's strategy. The event is expected to take place at the end of June in Paris or Brussels, he said.

Ashton praise

In a press release issued on Wednesday, EU's new foreign policy figure Catherine Ashton said she took note of the Georgian strategy and welcomed Tbilisi's commitment to solving the conflict only through peaceful means and diplomatic efforts.The EU welcomes the spirit of the initiative as a constructive step towards easing tensions, building confidence and reaching out to the residents of the Abkhaz and South Ossetian regions, the statement reads.On the same day, in a speech before the European Parliament, Ms Ashton said the bloc's engagement in Georgia to broker a ceasefire and then deploy EU monitors on the ground was a benchmark for how she wanted to see the new diplomatic service work. The EU's new External Action Service under her authority is set to be up and running by the end of the year.

EU defends hedge fund plans after US criticism

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - The European Union has defended its draft hedge fund legislation, following criticism from the US that the rules could discriminate against foreign hedge funds, private equity groups and banks. At a regular news conference in Brussels on Thursday (11 March), European Commission economy spokesperson Amadeu Altafaj said the bloc was entitled to come up with its own plans, and that the proposals were in accordance with G20 commitments.The EU decision to act on hedge funds is in line with a G20 decision to reinforce transparency, he said.The new hedge fund rules do not discriminate against foreign players and are not protectionist.In a letter to EU internal market and financial services commissioner Michel Barnier on Wednesday, US treasury secretary Tim Geithner warned that the EU plans could cause a transatlantic rift by discriminating against US groups. He pointed in particular to so-called third country elements of the draft directive, measures designed to force non-EU funds to comply with the new rules if they wish to seek investors inside the EU.Member state diplomats were meeting in Brussels on Thursday to agree on amendments to the draft legislation, put forward by the European Commission last April. EU finance ministers are then expected to finalise the member state position at a meeting next Tuesday, with agreement from the European Parliament then needed before full ratification can take place.

Credit default swaps

The move to finalise a European position on hedge funds comes as a number of EU governments ramp up pressure for commission action on credit default swaps (CDSs). In a joint letter to commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, dated 10 March, the leaders of four EU states called for an immediate enquiry into the role and impact of speculation linked to the insurance-type swaps. We must prevent speculative actions from causing so much uncertainty on the market that prices no longer provide accurate information and state financing reaches a fundamentally unjustifiable high level, said the letter.

Unheard of a decade ago, a CDS is a contract between two parties, under which the buyer pays for protection against bond default. Naked CDS trading, where the bank or hedge fund does not own the underlying bond, has attracted particular criticism from politicians who blame the process for exacerbating the Greek debt crisis. Large-scale purchases of CDSs can lead to increasing market doubts over the security of the underlying bond, they argue, pushing up bond yields and the cost of government borrowing. The letter is signed by French President Nicolas Sarkozy, Luxembourg's Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou.

Further Greek bail-out details?

Mr Papandreou has just returned from a European tour and subsequent visit to the US, with EU finance ministers expected to endorse the fresh austerity measures announced by his government last week. In return for the measures, Greece is pushing for greater details of a EU financial support plan to be made public, an action that would reassure investors and bring down Athen's borrowing costs, say Greek officials. A Greek source suggested to EUobserver on Thursday that euro area finance ministers are gearing up to make a fresh announcement regarding a potential Greek aid plan on Monday, going beyond a statement of solidarity given by EU leaders at an informal summit in Brussels on 11 February.

MEPs demand Hamas release Israeli soldier

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - The European Parliament on Thursday passed a resolution calling on Hamas to immediately release Gilad Shalit, the Israeli soldier captured in 2006 by the Palestinian militant group in a cross-border raid.The chamber by a strong majority said that it was wrong that Mr Shalit, both an Israeli and French citizen, was held incommunicado in Gaza and deprived of basic rights in accordance with the Geneva Convention and demanded that Hamas be as good as its word and grant Sergeant Shalit rights and privileges in accordance with the Third 1949 Geneva Convention.The resolution deplores the continued disregard for Sergeant Shalit's basic human rights and the fact that his family and the Israeli and French authorities have been prevented from obtaining information regarding his well-being.

The house called on Hamas to allow the International Committee of the Red Cross to visit Sergeant Shalit without delay, and to permit him to communicate with his family.The passage of the appeal came a day after Noam Shalit, the father of the IDF soldier, met with European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek. Mr Shalit gave the president news of negotiations on his son, currently ongoing with Hamas, categorised by the EU as a terrorist group, and mediated by Germany and Egypt.The European Union gives a lot of money to the Palestinians, and I hope the Palestinians, and especially Hamas, won't be able to ignore the vote, he said, according to AFP.
Israel is understood to be ready to release some 450 Palestinian prisoners in exchange for the 23-year-old soldier. Hamas however, has demanded the release of 1,000 Palestinian prisoners.Noam Shalit hoped that the EU should say clear and loud that it is not acceptable that Hamas is keeping anyone, and especially a European citizen, in captivity for four years, in complete isolation, without any contact with the outside world.EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton is due to visit the Gaza Strip later this month and also met with the soldier's father while he was in Strasbourg.I hope she will call for Hamas to conclude this issue and release my son Gilad, and for Israel to remove the [blockade] on the Gaza strip, he said.

Hurva to Reopen After 62 Years – Without Netanyahu

A senior diplomat told Arutz Sheva's Hebrew news service that the PM will absent himself in order to avoid conflict with the United States or the Palestinian Authority.The prime minister will address crowds at the Hurva ceremony by video instead. The diplomat who spoke to Arutz Sheva would not divulge the exact content of Netanyahu's address, but hinted, we're not sure that the nationalists are going to like what he intends to say.An official statement from the Prime Minister's Office confirmed that Netanyahu would not attend the Old City ceremony, but said his absence would be due only to time constraints.The Prime Minister has a very full schedule these days,the statement said.Netanyahu was criticized by U.S. Vice President Joseph Biden this week for allowing Israeli Jews to build homes in the Jewish neighborhood of Ramat Shlomo in Jerusalem, an area that has never had Arab residents and is located between the densely populated Jewish neighborhoods of Sanhedria and Ramot. . The PA harshly criticized Netanyahu as well, accusing him of torpedoing negotiations by allowing Jews to move into parts of the capital that the PA lays claim to.

Netanyahu apologized to Biden for the timing of the Ramat Shlomo building plans. Knesset Speaker Ruby Rivlin (Likud) and other MK's of Netanyahu's Likud criticized Biden's reaction, some having harsh words for Netanyahu's apology as well.The PA considers Jerusalem's Old City to be occupied territory as well. While the area is historically Jewish, it was occupied by Jordan from 1948 to 1967, and the PA considers it Arab land. Israeli attempts to restore historic Jewish sites in the Old City, such as the Kotel tunnels during Netanyahu's first term of office, have been met with fierce Arab opposition and violent rioting.The Hurva synagogue served as Jerusalem's main Ashkenazi synagogue for generations, until it was destroyed by the Jordanian army during the 1948 War of Independence. It will be reopened on Monday. U.S. Jews to Biden: Leave Jerusalem Alone

The American vice president had condemned Israel's decision to allow Jews to build in historic Jerusalem, in an area that has been annexed by Israel but is claimed by the Palestinian Authority.We strongly condemn Vice President Biden's statements and respectfully urge him to rescind his incendiary remarks about Jerusalem, said Young Israel President Shlomo Mostofsky.The reality is that there is no such entity as East Jerusalem,there is only Jerusalem, which is the united capital of Israel, Mostofsky continued. Only Israel can make determinations regarding Jerusalem's future expansion and development.Mostofsky compared the situation to construction of homes in the American capital.It would be anathema for a Vice President to support a statute that banned any American from relocated to, or from building a home in, Washington D.C. Or any American community because the neighbors objected to their presence based solely on religion, ethnicity or origin,he said. By expecting Jews to be banned from certain Jerusalem neighborhoods simply because they are Jewish, Biden ignored our American values of equality and justice, he charged.

Biden made the mistake of giving the Palestinian Authority a false impression, said Mostofsky. Biden led the PA to believe that America would pressure Israel into negotiating the status of Jerusalem, he said, when in reality, Israelis overwhelmingly oppose putting Jerusalem on the table in talks with the PA.Instead of pandering to terrorists, the Vice President should have told the PA to amend its charter, stop preaching hatred in their schools and mosques, and immediately halt all plans for terrorist attacks, Mostofsky suggested.

Al-Jazeera Airs Footage of Israeli Captives

(IsraelNN.com) The pan-Arab news network Al-Jazeera broadcast archive images of captive IDF soldiers from the past on Thursday night as Hamas continued to pressure Israel to release terrorists in exchange for captive soldier Gilad Shalit. The network aired footage of Nissim Shalem and Yossef Groff.Shalem and Groff were taken captive in Lebanon in 1982. They and fellow captive soldier Hezi Shai were returned to Israel in 1985 in exchange for the release of 1,150 terrorists. One of the freed terrorists, Ahmed Yassin, went on to found Hamas.The footage aired on Al-Jazeera was recorded in 1983. In the video, the two soldiers accused Israel of murdering innocent Arabs in Sabra and Shatila, and compared IDF soldiers to nazis.Shalem later told Israeli reporters that his terrorist captors had forced him to make the statements. He told his captors that the IDF was not responsible for the massacre, but you couldn't tell them the truth, he explained.Al-Jazeera used the tapes as part of a three-part series it is airing on the exchange of Israeli captives for imprisoned terrorists.

In 2006, Hamas kidnapped IDF soldier Gilad Shalit near Gaza. The terror group claims Shalit is alive and well, although it has refused to allow international observers to make contact with the young captive. Only one short video clip of Shaliit was released by Hamas since his capture.Hamas leaders are demanding the release of over 1,000 terrorists in exchange for Shalit's freedom.

Miracles are definitely a mystical subject, but we're trying to bring them into the realm of reason as well, he explained.The question is how we see our daily reality, what's called Your miracles from day to day, he continued. Dr. Hadad compared the views of two great Jewish scholars, saying,According to the Ramban [Nachmanides], events that are clearly miraculous are meant to show us that our entire existence is miraculous and due to G-d's constant supervision, while the Rambam [Maimonides] believes that there are miracles that defy nature while the rest of existence is natural and works according to fixed laws.Today's society is focused on miracles, Hadad said. Today we're in an era of miraculous perception,we see that Kabbalah study is flourishing, people seek miracles, there's a yearning, he explained.The miracle-seeking nature of today's society can be seen in art – a phenomenon that was the topic of one lecture at the conference. Many students in the film department make movies in which miracles are the main theme,Hadad said.

The focus on miracles is not entirely positive, he added. There are definitely dangers... Canada: Investigation over Online Hate Speech

The website's creator, York University student Salman Hossain, has been suspended from school and will face a disciplinary panel.The Ontario Police's hate crimes and extremism unit is looking into Hossain's writings.Hossain, a dual citizen of Bangladesh and Canada, created a site called filthyjewishterrorists.com on which he blamed terrorist attacks in the United States and Canada on the mass murdering terrorist Jewish community.He accused Jews of being behind terrorist attacks that were in fact perpetrated by Muslims, and said that the Jews carried out the attacks in order to make Muslims look bad.He called to murder all Jews in Europe and North America if a terrorist attack were to take place in Canada.The university is moving on this issue in a serious fashion, York University said in a statement.We want all of our students, all of our community members, to be safe,the school added.

On his site, which has been taken offline, Hossain bragged about his hatred for Jews, and predicted that foreign troops would enter Western countries and vaporize the Jewish neighborhoods in Major Population Centers using nuclear warheads and cruise missiles.This war on Islam... will end with the complete extermination of the Jewish culture, race, and religion, he said.After Canada's National Post reported on the story, Hossain confirmed that he did in fact support genocide against Jews.

Hossain has been involved in hate crimes in the past. Three years ago, he faced charges after expressing support for terrorist attacks in Canada. Those charges were dismissed after the attorney general determined that Hossain was undergoing rehabilitation.

Illegal aliens will suddenly find themselves Americans and part of the system…..especially, the democratic voting system. Now….you owe us…pay up. Most will pay up you realize. They will pay by allowing themselves to be totally manipulated and patronized for their votes. Oh, did you think Obama and his progressive worshipers were wanting to offer amnesty because they were so empathic and nice???

The bottom line is a forced national ID card attached to every American worker will have nothing at all to do with helping the illegal immigration and border disaster. You realize this would only invite millions more illegal aliens across our borders. There would be a huge and growing business of stealing worker cards and other Identity documents. This is part of the grander scheme to control all Americans….what we eat, how long we live, where we go, what we do for work, health care, guns, use of gas and energy and freedom in general. Just this week I talked with legal analyst and founder of www.faxdc.com, Steve Eichler about this very thing. He forwarded me an article from The Wall Street Journal that outlined the very real push for a national ID worker card for everyone. I was horrified as I started tracking through this and a few other breaking stories, some of which were broken on my show. I realized that we were closer to a cashless and controlled society than I had thought.

You would be assigned so many carbon credits a month to use for gas, food and other needs. When the Government said they were done for the week or month, you were done. No more food, gas or anything else, like heat in your home either. Total control….and green control at that.Pat also talked about the push now for Smart Grid technology. This is a computerized network of things, where chips are put into your house, from washing machines to ovens and phones…..guess what, the smart grid knows exactly how much energy you use, for what and when you use it. The big Mamma behind the curtain of smart grid can decide when you fly home to Kansas or crash in a field cold and dead. Already, Pat said that appliance companies who make electronic things in your house are cooperating and putting readable chips in them so the smart grid can do their thing.

Then there is the control with the Health Care bill

In the Senate and House version still being manipulated into place, they have described the IRS controlling this bill. It would have access to your bank accounts, especially if health payments or bills were late. Did you ever wonder why this Health care horror show would be governed by the dreaded IRS? Wonder no more. They have the biggest and most complicated computer system of tracking there is. Imagine a person fighting cancer, having lost a job and now behind on payments to a coerced Government health plan……now the IRS is breathing down your back and seizing your bank accounts.We fight scream and yell about the paid for abortions, forced health insurance or else sections, and rationed health care for seniors. These areas and more are total nightmares….BUT….the biggest nightmare is a controlled system that connects and directs traffic of Government control, hiding behind health.

Colleen LaRose: The New American terrorist?

10 March 2010: A four-count indictment issued against Colleen Renee LaRose, 46, formerly of 429 Main Street, Pennsburg, Pennsylvania was unsealed yesterday by federal authorities in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. The indictment charges LaRose with one count each of conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists, conspiracy to kill in a foreign country, making false statements to a government official and attempted identity theft. The indictment also references five other co-conspirators, including one who resides in the U.S., although none of the five were identified by name.LaRose came to the attention of federal authorities in 2008, when she allegedly began using the internet to solicit financial and material support to wage Jihad, or holy Islamic war against the West. Using the internet pseudonyms JihadJane and Fatima Rose,LaRose posted on Islamic internet forums, YouTube and FaceBook in an attempt to befriend and rally like-minded Muslims to her cause. She expressed her desire to advance Islamic holy war and become a shahed, or martyr for Islam. Others living within and outside of the U.S. answered her calls, and she began to put her alleged murderous plans into action.Her online activities abruptly stopped she was arrested by federal authorities in on October 15, 2009, on charges of transferring a stolen U.S. passport to a co-conspirator. Following her arrest, she was incarcerated at the Federal Detention Center (FDC) in Philadelphia where she currently remains.The indictment released Tuesday offers only a limited glimpse into the activities and ambitions of Colleen LaRose. Her path to Islamic jihad is neither exclusive nor exceptional, despite her U.S. citizenship and decidedly Western appearance. In fact, the case of Colleen LaRose can be an example of an emerging breed of Islamic terrorists and a template illustrating the developing threat posed by an ideology motivated by hatred.

The road to jihad

Diminutive at 4’11” tall, with dark blond hair and green eyes, Colleen Renee LaRose most recently lived in a second-floor apartment at this four-unit brick apartment house in the town of Pennsburg, , a rural community located north of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She resided there with her cats and for a time with a boyfriend and his ill father after living in San Angelo, Texas for several years.In Texas, she lived at 305 N. Schroeder Avenue, San Angelo, with her husband Rudolpho CAVAZOS until her divorce in 1998, although maintained that surname as well as other aliases and variations of her name. In 1997, she was convicted of a class B misdemeanor for passing a bad check. According to court records, an open warrant still exists for her in the state of Texas stemming from that case. She was also convicted of driving under the influence.LaRose reportedly converted to Islam as a result of her relationship with a male companion. Over the last few years, she began to become active in Islamic forums and web sites, embracing the ideology while living a rather unremarkable life and blending with the landscape of suburban sprawl in America.

Information obtained exclusively by this investigator from a federal source involved in this investigation provided insight into LaRose’s path from an American suburbanite to alleged terrorist, as well as the ensuing investigation leading to her indictment.In June 2008, LaRose posted an entry on the internet site YouTube under the pseudonym JihadJane, writing that she wanted to help the suffering Muslim people.Following the posting of the video and her statement, federal agents began and maintained surveillance of the video and postings, including LaRose’s writiings.

It was not until December 2008 that the posting by LaRose received a response by a co-conspirator in a south Asian county who expressed a desire to also wage jihad and become a martyr. It is relevant to note that the lapse between June and December 2008 was caused, in part, by self-proclaimed cyber vigilantes intent on taking down such postings to fight against jihad.Those activities also caused interruptions of proactive monitoring of the seditious activity by federal intelligence officials – an issue coincidently addressed in this article by this author.From December 2008 through March 2009, LaRose communicated via the internet with other Muslim terrorists and supporters, arranging for financing, training and travel to advance Islamic jihad. One of the communications between LaRose and an unidentified co-conspirator referenced the plan for LaRose to marry the co-conspirator to secure his residency in a European country. Meanwhile, LaRose sought information from the Swedish Embassy, inquiring how to obtain permanent residency status in Sweden.Also in March, LaRose reportedly received instructions to travel to Sweden for the alleged purpose of murdering an individual there. In a series of communications on March 22, 2009 between LaRose and a co-conspirator and Islamic terrorist identified as CC#3 in the indictment, CC#3 directed LaRose to murder an individual in Sweden, killing him in a way that the whole Kufar [non-believer] world would get frightened.

Based on a confirmation received by this author from a federal source, her mission was to murder Lars Vilks, an artist who drew a picture of the head of Muhammed on the body of a dog. That depiction of Muhammed angered Muslims throughout Europe, much like the Danish cartoon controversy. LaRose agreed to do so, writing I will make this my goal till I achieve it or die trying,according to the indictment.On August 23, 2009, LaRose allegedly stole the passport from the male with whom she resided, removed the hard drive from her computer in an attempt to conceal her plans, and embarked on her journey to Europe. Later that month, she she traveled to Europe with the intent to live and train with jihadists and to find and kill Vilks. Within two weeks, she joined an online community hosted by Vilks and eventually moved into Vilks’ artist enclave in Sweden.For the next few weeks, LaRose waited for final authorization from her terrorist contacts. On September 25, 2009, she reportedly received a communication stating that The brothers are ready,and a request that she send money to her contact in Somalia, reportedly a member of the al Shabaab terrorist organization. In a follow-up communication five days later, LaRose stated that she considered it an honor and great pleasure to die or kill for her terrorist contact, adding that only death will stop me here that I am so close to the target,according to the indictment.LaRose never executed her plan to murder Vilks, and federal officials are not releasing additional information about the events that followed, citing the ongoing nature of this investigation and additional pending arrests. What is clear is that LaRose traveled back to the U.S. in the days that followed, and was arrested by federal officials in Philadelphia on October 15, 2009.What is also clear is that LaRose is not the only American being motivated to Islamic jihad. The road to jihad is a busy one, and until the West understands and acts upon the peril we face, there will many others answering the call to jihad.

Setting the record straight

9 March 2010: Just after settling in as the newest member of the Northeast Intelligence Network, I was ready to dig in to a list of assignments suggested to me by Doug Hagmann, the organization’s founder and director. I followed the organization while living and working in Great Britain and courted the idea of joining the Northeast Intelligence Network after arriving in the U.S. Last month, I completed several informal training sessions that gave me necessary insight into the inner workings of the organization, only to be taken aback by a Fox News report out of Chicago about cyber vigilantes fighting terrorists on the Internet. That report featured the Northeast Intelligence Network as one of a group of cyber-vigilantes whose objectives include the act of going after and taking down terrorist web sites.

Pardon my expression and regression to my native slang, but the depiction of the Northeast Intelligence Network as a cyber-vigilante is a bunch of bollocks.One of the very first things I learned during my induction into the Northeast Intelligence Network is the importance of being covert and operating without interference, especially in cyberspace. It is our operational policy to observe, follow and track terror threats, but never do anything to drive a source of raw intelligence further underground. After I read the article and watched the news video that aired with the Fox report, I immediately called Mr. Hagmann, who was featured in the segment for clarification. Had our policies suddenly changed? Mr. Hagmann assured me that nothing had changed. The story was heavily edited and failed to include his emphasis on the tactics that separate the Northeast Intelligence Network from groups that have been defined as weekend warriors, armchair detectives, amateur sleuths and cyber vigilantes.We’ve spent far too much time and effort to infiltrate the forums, web sites and identify the informational portals used by the terrorists to do anything that would cause the Islamic terrorists and their supporters to shut down and move elsewhere in cyberspace,he said.It’s just not how we operate. It’s absolutely counterproductive and those who are engaged in such tactics are deluding themselves into believing that they are helping to fight terrorism. Just the opposite, in fact,added Mr. Hagmann.

And so began my first assignment – interviewing Mr. Hagmann to write about on a topic I hadn’t expected and clearing any misconceptions about our counter-terrorism efforts. I also learned that there are so-called cyber vigilantes and cyber-crusaders as described in this 2008 Fox report who wear the title as a badge of honour.Although our operational tactics are vastly different from other groups having a visible presence on the Internet, we have unfortunately been lumped in with those organizations,stated Mr. Hagmann.The core of our all-volunteer organization consists of about 20 well-experienced professional investigators who excel in their individual areas of expertise, from surveillance to forensic accounting. Located across North America, they engage in the monitoring of communications of internet sites and also conduct field investigations and surveillance to verify information as warranted. Many are former law enforcement officers and veterans of federal investigative agencies. Not only are they experienced and adequately equipped with state of the art surveillance equipment, they are properly licensed,stressed Mr. Hagmann. They comprise the covert area of operations and do not publicly contribute to the web site.Additionally, many of these investigators have spent significant amounts of time infiltrating the forums and web sites operated by Islamic terrorists, creating multiple identities and becoming established within those venues. Unlike to so-called cyber vigilantes who disrupt the terror sites, their sole purpose is to covertly monitor their communications and collect information about the identities of the participants. Based on my limited time with the Northeast Intelligence Network, I am amazed at the amount of information that has been collected.Ours is a strictly passive activity and at no time do our investigators engage, bait or disrupt any activity taking place within the groups that have been infiltrated. It is not our business to solicit responses or encourage or engage in any dialogue, but to document activity, which is then vetted for content and submitted to the appropriate law enforcement agency,stated Mr. Hagmann.

The public side of our organization, or what is presented on our website, is provided as a public service to inform and possibly educate our readers of the potential threats we face. It is the combined product of our investigative findings in conjunction with open source information. Merely causing a [terrorist] web site to be shut down is of little overall consequence. Those who truly understand how these sites, forums and portals are set up would realize that their actions have little impact on the terrorists’ operation, but they do have the potential to significantly disrupt legitimate efforts to gather intelligence,he stated.According to Doug Hagmann, being characterized as some type of cyber-vigilante is both inaccurate and insulting. Based on my experience, I agree.

With donation-rich WWF behind it, how long before Earth Hour becomes Earth Day, Earth Week, Earth Month…...People worried that rising energy costs will someday put them into permanent darkness can fight back by simply leaving their lights on.

The Need to Fix Debt-Based Currencies and Stop Banking Globalization
Russia, Greece, Chile, and the Narcissism of Harvard Debt Lords

Today marks the beginning of a new administration in Chile as Harvard economist and billionaire Sebastián Piñera eked out a narrow victory in January. Interestingly this is related to the rest of the world as we also see today Greek police, dressed in the Darth Vader costumes used in every country, cracking down hard on their poor countrymen. They have been robbed by the elite financier/politician tag-teams that roam the world attacking whichever country and currency they choose.Since almost every currency is just a debt-based instrument, the tag-teams are quite successful. Despite the claims of neoclassical economics and the theories of Harvard Business School, having a debt-based currency means that governments are not in charge of their countries. We are living in a world governed by the bond market, billionaires, and elite financial institutions, not governments. The future is grim if this isn’t changed. People who dismiss this will learn the painful lesson in due course. Most countries, especially the United States, are now stuck under incomprehensible levels of debt just waiting for financiers to attack. National foreclosure is coming. Those who paid attention when it happened to southeast Asian countries, Russia, Argentina, Mexico, and others know what is coming. People who are paying attention now to Greece can see what is coming—the end of cash transactions, the loss of sovereign land, the privatization of resources, massive taxation, the end of support for the lower classes, and an active police state.

Plutocracy: Government by the Wealthy Few
The Greek protesters are chanting no sacrifice for plutocracy while being tear gassed and beaten. It certainly isn’t the catchiest phrase I’ve ever heard, but it is precisely accurate. The private sector rich rotate through the public sector so their nexus of power cannot be threatened. The citizens of Iceland understood this and luckily took their power back by refusing to payoff the fraudulent loans of the foreign financiers. Why has no other country done this? Why have no US states, bankrupt for the same reason, done this? In every situation other than Iceland, the politicians submit to the financiers, put their citizens in austerity, and sick the storm troopers on the poor like a pack of pit bulls.
The reason they submit is primarily because mega banking institutions control money (see previous article on Wall Street).But politicians also submit because they are willing accomplices. They increase deficits and participate in the game that builds up the leverage in the first place, which makes a few people very rich. Then when debt deflation or a currency attack occurs, they continue playing the game. We have seen this in the United States over the last several years as presidents let the near-billionaire Harvard boys Robert Rubin and Hank Paulson setup the game, not to mention the not as rich Ivy Leaguers like Larry Summers and Tim Geithner. So far trillions have been stripped from the American people. But we are only at half time. You will know when the 2nd half has started when you look outside your front window and see the picture from Greece above.The few politicians and financiers I am talking about have been playing this game together for a long time. They are bred in a world separate from you and me. They live in the same elite enclaves, attend the same private prep schools, go to the same Ivy League colleges, business schools, and law schools, and then spread out between New York and Washington DC to continue their self-serving partnership. Again, I’m talking about a small group, not 95% of the graduates of these institutions.A useful indicator for whether someone is part of the select few or not is narcissism. Are they ruthless overachievers for a paycheck? Is class status important to them? Do they have contempt for the average person? Do they strive to become part of the oligarchic elite in clubs like the Council on Foreign Relations? The answer is yes to all of those questions for some very key names we have seen over the last several years:

Robert Rubin – CFR, Harvard, Goldman, Treasury, Citi
Hank Paulson – CFR, Harvard, Goldman, Treasury
Larry Summers – CFR, Harvard, Treasury, World Bank
Tim Geithner – CFR, Dartmouth, Treasury, Fed, IMF
Jamie Dimon – CFR, Harvard, Chase, Fed

The list could go on for a while. It includes both the private sector folks getting fabulously rich from our monetary, fiscal, and regulatory policy over the last 30 years, and the government officials who are making the policy. In fact the officials making the policy ARE the rich private sector few who benefit from it—the definition of plutocracy and oligarchy.

You will not see people on this list who would be true public servants:

Brooksley Born – tried to stop the Harvard boys under Clinton
William Black – defended the country in the S&L scandal
Janet Tavakoli – explains the public-private fraud better than almost anyone
Eliot Spitzer – could be the modern Teddy Roosevelt going after the plutocrats

People like this are capable of compassion and concern for fellow human beings. They can see through Ivy League schmarm and are not controlled by a desire to be part of the inside clique. They do not suffer from narcissism, which is easy to detect as you see them talk on TV (actually Spitzer is narcissistic, but he is the type that wants to fight the establishment narcissists, so he is a real public servant). If these people ran Treasury, SEC, FDIC, Justice, and other regulatory agencies, we might have a country with a future for the average person. Instead we only see the connected few in these positions.

Harvard Economists, Debt Lords, and Billionaires in Government
In the US, the Harvard economists and billionaires who want to run things have to hide behind lawyers and corporate institutions or be appointed to unelected positions like Treasury Secretary because our citizens would never vote for them. But something has changed in Chile where for decades they voted for public servants who have worked to eliminate poverty but have now put a Harvard economist and billionaire in office.

How did Sebastián Piñera become a billionaire? The same way the most powerful people in the world make money—by using debt to suck wealth from the population creating all the value. He founded credit card company Bancard and helped put the Chilean people in debt to the Anglo banking model. Will someone like this serve the public interest?

Well, here’s a scary thought experiment: would Jamie Dimon, CEO of the biggest debt machine in the US and insider on the NY Federal Reserve Board, be a president who cares about you? Any narcissist who can lecture lower class Americans to pay their debts, the source of his wealth, while his firm is in the process of tripling credit card rates and kicking them out of their homes has no business coming anywhere close to the public sector. This is the type of guy who now runs Chile. Of course with Rubin, Paulson, and their protégé Geithner in Treasury, this is also the type of guy who has run the US for several years.As a fellow Harvard Business School alum, guys like Jamie Dimon and Hank Paulson embarrass and disgust me by furthering the financial empire system beyond reasonable means to keep lining their wallets while impoverishing the American Republic and conquering other nations. There are more just like them in the select club. But even worse than these MBAs chasing paychecks is the Harvard economist Larry Summers who creates the economic structure within which the MBAs operate. He tore down Glass-Steagall and led the free market jihad against any and all regulation in derivatives, which setup the Wall Street structure that brought us to the crash of 2008. He and his colleague Andrei Shleifer tried to privatize Russia in 1998 and hand it over to the wealthy oligarchs, while Shleifer was personally profiting from insider trades on Russian companies. Then while he was president of the institution, he had Harvard pay the legal settlement for Shleifer, infuriating other Harvard professors. Summers also helped put Mexico in debt and reinforce the plutocratic regime there in the peso crisis of 1994.These people need to be stopped. It should be clear by now that Harvard MBAs voraciously pursuing paychecks running mega financial institutions, after Harvard economists have rigged the regulatory system, can do a lot of damage. The citizens of Iceland have realized this and set the example. If other countries fail to follow, their populations face a future clash with their police just as Greece is experiencing today. Why the police agree to make war against their own people in order to protect rich guys is a topic for another article, but it could all be avoided if countries would just reassert their sovereignty.

-Start phasing out debt-based currencies by creating sovereign ones that are an asset to the people. Pass usury laws at the same time to prevent banks from jacking up rates to suck up this extra money and creating a financial catastrophe.
-Put people like Born, Black, Tavakoli, and Spitzer in charge.
-Breakup the Wall Street banks. Also end their cartel by nationalizing the Federal Reserve, thereby passing power back to the states and state-chartered banks.
-Push your state governments to spend asset money into the system (see the Minnesota Transportation Act). California and Illinois are about to be pushed into Greece’s foreclosure situation. It does not need to happen if only the governments would do their constitutional duty.
