PARIS, France (AFP) — Scientists announced Wednesday they had restored blood flow and cell function throughout the bodies of pigs that were dead for an hour, in a breakthrough experts say could mean we need to update the definition of death itself.The discovery raised hopes for a range of future medical uses in humans, the most immediate being that it could help organs last longer, potentially saving the lives of thousands of people worldwide in need of transplants.However it could also spur debate about the ethics of such procedures — particularly after some of the ostensibly dead pigs startled the scientists by making sudden head movements during the experiment.The US-based team from Yale University stunned the scientific community in 2019 by managing to restore cell function in the brains of pigs hours after they had been decapitated.For the latest research, published in the journal Nature, the team sought to expand this technique to the entire body.They induced a heart attack in the anaesthetised pigs, which stopped blood flowing through the bodies.This deprives the body’s cells of oxygen — and without oxygen, cells in mammals die.The pigs then sat dead for an hour.The scientists then pumped the bodies with a liquid containing the pigs’ own blood, as well as a synthetic form of haemoglobin — the protein that carries oxygen in red blood cells — and drugs that protect cells and prevent blood clots.Blood started circulating again and many cells began functioning including in vital organs such as the heart, liver and kidney, for the next six hours of the experiment.“These cells were functioning hours after they should not have been — what this tells us is that the demise of cells can be halted,” Nenad Sestan, the study’s senior author and a researcher at Yale University, told journalists.Co-lead author David Andrijevic, also from Yale, told AFP the team hopes the technique, called OrganEx, “can be used to salvage organs.”OrganEx could also make new forms of surgery possible as it creates “more medical wiggle room in cases with no circulation to fix things,” said Anders Sandberg of Oxford University’s Future of Humanity Institute.The technique could potentially also be used to resuscitate people. MONTREAL — Canada handled the first two years of the COVID-19 pandemic and weathered the ensuing upheaval better than several other nations with comparable health-care and economic infrastructure, a new study suggests.The research, published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal on Monday, credits Canada's strong performance to restrictive and persistent public health measures as well as a successful vaccination campaign.A team of Ontario researchers analyzed data from February 2020 to February 2022 in the group of industrialized countries known as the G10, which actually has 11 members. They compared Canada, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States — all countries with similar political, economic, and health-care systems.*"If you look at Canada compared to the G10, the differences are enormous," study co-author Dr. Fahad Razak said in a recent interview. "If you look at our vaccination rate, we had the highest in the entire G10." After Japan, Canada had the second lowest rate of people infected and the second lowest rate of people dying, he added. The study says Japan is considered an outlier within the G10, for reasons that aren't clear.The research suggests Canada’s cumulative per-capita rate of COVID-19 cases was 82,700 per million, while all other countries — with the exception of Japan — were above 100,000 per million.Canada’s rate of COVID-19-related deaths was 919 per million, once again second lowest behind Japan. All other countries were over 1,000 per million.Razak said at least 70,000 more Canadians would have died during the first two years of the pandemic if Canada had the same death rates as the United States, the country with the highest cumulative number of COVID-19-related deaths."That means most of us would probably personally know a grandparent, or a friend or family member ... who’s living today in Canada who would have died if we had the same trajectory as the United States," Razak said.He said Canada's comparatively positive outcomes came about despite gaining access to vaccination later than most countries, noting there were also other health-care system structural disadvantages to overcome across the country at the outset of the pandemic."Some hospitals were so overwhelmed that we had to ambulance or airlift patients to other hospitals," he said.But Canada, he said, differed from other developed countries when it opted to implement public health measures that were both strict and persistent. Though such measures drew vehement opposition in some circles, Razak said they helped mitigate the pandemic's overall impact."Compared to many other countries ... they would have periods with tight restrictions but quickly pull back," he said. "For Canada, it was really this high and persistent level almost entirely for the first two years."But Razak said the success of Canada's immunization drive emerged as the strongest takeaway from the research, praising officials for engaging with the population and ensuring vaccines were readily available across the country.More than 80 per cent of eligible Canadians have been fully vaccinated with two doses as of June. The percentage of the vaccinated populations in other G10 countries is between 64 and 77 per cent, according to the study."There was a magic in Canada around these vaccine roll-outs during dose one and dose two," Razak said."When we speak to our colleagues across the world, Canada was the envy of the world in terms of our population rallying around this. It is a lesson to the world, that very high engagement can occur with the right strategy."The study also showed the countries' response to the pandemic left an economic burden, with government debt rising for all countries and Canada registering one of the highest relative increases."We had these very significant economic impacts, we had very tight restrictions on our individual freedom which led to things like isolation ... but we also had really among the best results in terms of controlling the impact of the virus," Razak said."Was it worth it? Opposition leader Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday presented an “emergency plan” to address the rising cost of living in Israel as political campaigns heated up ahead of November’s elections.His political opponents slammed the proposals as “disconnected” and pointed out that living costs soared during Netanyahu’s long period as prime minister.In a 17-minute long video uploaded to his official social media accounts, Netanyahu presented his Likud party’s proposals for lowering prices in Israel.“Our country is going through a severe economic crisis. This doesn’t have to be the case. It is possible to get out of it,” Netanyahu said. “Only a stable government, only a stable national government, will lower prices.”“Everyone knows the world is undergoing an economic crisis, which was created by the pandemic and by the war in Ukraine. No one denies that, but a global economic crisis is not an excuse for idleness,” he said.He said that if elected he would immediately lower electricity, gas and water prices, as well as freeze the rates for municipal taxes, known in Israel as “arnona,” for a year. Following a new assessment held by the Israel Defense Forces, road closures along the border with the Gaza Strip will remain in place on Thursday, for the third day in a row, local authorities said Wednesday night.The closures came amid fears of an imminent attack by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad terror group, after the IDF arrested its West Bank leader on Monday night.In a message to citizens, the Hof Ashkelon Regional Council said plans by Islamic Jihad to launch anti-tank guided missiles or commit a sniper attack on the border have so far been prevented “by virtue of keeping and complying with the instructions.”Earlier on Wednesday, the IDF said it had bolstered its Gaza Division with 100 reservist troops and three conscript companies to assist in keeping civilians out of restricted areas under imminent threat by Islamic Jihad.The IDF’s Southern Command and the air defense array were also on high alert for the possibility of rocket fire.Israel has reportedly warned terror groups based in the enclave that it would respond forcefully to any revenge attack following the recent arrest of Bassem Saadi, who leads Islamic Jihad in the West Bank.Prime Minister Yair Lapid convened the high-level security cabinet on Wednesday to discuss the tensions and receive an update on Israel’s current assessments and actions it had been taking to defend against the imminent threat of a potential Islamic Jihad attack on the border.Tensions around the Strip spiked following the arrest of Saadi in Jenin on Monday night. New US polling has found over a quarter of Democrats feel the party’s policies are overly supportive of Israel.The University of Maryland Critical Issues Poll asked respondents a range of questions covering topics such as US policy on Israel and the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement.The poll found that 57 percent of respondents did not know the position of the US administration on Israel. Of those who did express an opinion, 26% of Democrats felt that government policy was more skewed towards Israel than their own views, only 3% felt the policy was overly favorable toward Palestinians, and 15% said policies matched their views.Meanwhile, 44% of Republicans felt the Biden administration leaned more toward Palestinians than their own views, while 9% felt it leaned more toward Israel.The poll also sought to gauge attitudes relating to the controversial BDS movement. Respondents were asked whether they had a view on BDS, and if so, what was it.Thirty-four percent of all respondents said they didn’t know what BDS was, while 18% said they were neither for nor against the movement. Of those with a clear opinion, 20% were supportive and 28% were opposed.Attitudes on BDS showed a clear partisan split, with 33% of Democrats supporting the movement, as opposed to just 9% of Republicans who support it. Republican opposition to BDS was at 50%, whereas Democrat opposition was at just 10%. Taipei (AFP) Aug 3, 2022 - Ever since Communist China and Taiwan broke away from each other at the end of the Chinese Civil War in 1949 the waterway separating them has been a tense geopolitical flashpoint.Just 130 kilometres (81 miles) wide at its narrowest point, the Taiwan Strait is a major international shipping channel and all that lies between now democratic, self-ruled Taiwan and its giant authoritarian neighbour.Beijing has responded furiously to this week's visit to Taiwan by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, issuing increasingly bellicose threats and announcing a series of military drills in the waters surrounding the island.Historians pinpoint three previous moments when tensions within the Taiwan Strait boiled over into an acute crisis.- First Taiwan Strait Crisis -At the end of the Chinese Civil War, Mao Zedong's communist forces had successfully pushed out Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalists, who relocated to Taiwan.Two rivals stood on each side of the strait -- the People's Republic of China (PRC) on the mainland and the Republic of China (ROC) in Taiwan.The First Taiwan Strait Crisis broke out in August 1954 when the Nationalists placed thousands of troops on Taiwan-ruled Kinmen and Matsu, two small islands just a few miles from the mainland.Communist China responded with artillery bombardments of the islands and the successful capture of the Yijiangshan Islands, about 400 kilometres north of Taipei.The crisis was eventually defused but nearly brought China and the United States to the brink of direct conflict.- Second Taiwan Strait Crisis -Fighting broke out again in 1958 as Mao's forces conducted an intense bombardment of Kinmen and Matsu in a bid to once again dislodge Nationalist troops there.Concerned that the loss of those islands might lead to the collapse of the Nationalists and Beijing's eventual takeover of Taiwan, US President Dwight D Eisenhower ordered his military to escort and resupply their Taiwanese allies.At one point, the US even briefly considered deploying nuclear weapons against China.Unable to take the offshore islands or bombard the Nationalists into submission, Beijing announced a ceasefire.Mao's forces would still intermittently shell Kinmen up to 1979 but an otherwise tense stalemate set in.- Third Taiwan Strait Crisis -It would be another 37 years before the next crisis.In those intervening decades, both China and Taiwan changed considerably.Following the death of Mao, China remained Communist Party-controlled but began a period of reform and opening up to the world.Taiwan, meanwhile, began shaking off the authoritarian years of Chiang Kai-shek and evolving into a progressive democracy, with many embracing a distinctly Taiwanese -- and not Chinese -- identity.Tensions exploded again in 1995 when China began test-firing missiles in the waters around Taiwan to protest a visit by Taiwanese President Lee Teng-hui to his alma mater university in the United States.Beijing particularly loathed Lee because he favoured Taiwan declaring itself an independent state.Further missile tests were carried out a year later as Taiwan held its first direct presidential election.The display backfired.The US dispatched two aircraft carrier groups to push China into backing down and Lee won the election by a large margin.A year later, Newt Gingrich became the first US House Speaker to visit Taiwan, a precedent Pelosi is now following 25 years later.Taiwan struck a defiant tone Wednesday as it hosted US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, with a furious China gearing up for military exercises dangerously close to the island's shores in retaliation for the visit.Pelosi landed in Taiwan on Tuesday despite a series of increasingly stark threats from Beijing, which views the island as its territory and had said it would consider the visit a major provocation.China responded swiftly, warning the US ambassador in Beijing of "extremely serious consequences" and announcing military drills in seas around Taiwan -- some of the world's busiest waterways."Facing deliberately heightened military threats, Taiwan will not back down. Now, after a wildfire raged through the forested region near the Oregon state line, four people are dead and the store is among the few buildings not reduced to ashes.At an evacuation center Wednesday, Bill Simms said that three of the four victims were his neighbors. Two were a married couple who lived up the road.“I don’t get emotional about stuff and material things,” Simms said. “But when you hear my next-door neighbors died ... that gets a little emotional.”The 65-year-old retiree bought his property six years ago as a second home with access to hunting and fishing. He said Klamath River is a place people are attracted to because they can have privacy and enjoy nature.He went back to check on his property Tuesday and found it was destroyed.“The house, the guest house and the RV were gone. It’s just wasteland, devastation,” Simms said. He found the body of one of his two cats, which he buried. The other cat is still missing. He was able to take his two dogs with him to the shelter.The McKinney Fire broke out Friday and was still out of control on Wednesday, despite progress by firefighters who took advantage of rain from thunderstorms and lower temperatures.But even the welcome precipitation brought problems. On Tuesday, heavy rain swelled rivers and creeks and a private contractor in a pickup truck who was aiding the firefighting effort was hurt when a bridge gave out and washed away the vehicle, said Courtney Kreider, a spokesperson with the Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office. ISAIAH 28:14-19 (THIS IS THE 7 YR TREATY COVENANT OF DANIEL 9:27)
14 Wherefore hear the word of the LORD, ye scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem.
15 Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:
16 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.17 Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.
18 And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.
19 From the time that it goeth forth it shall take you: for morning by morning shall it pass over, by day and by night: and it shall be a vexation only to understand the report.
DANIEL 8:23-25
23 And in the latter time of their kingdom, when the transgressors are come to the full, a king (EU DICTATOR) of fierce countenance, and understanding dark sentences,(FROM THE OCCULT) shall stand up.
24 And his power shall be mighty, but not by his own power:(SATANS POWER) and he shall destroy wonderfully, and shall prosper, and practise, and shall destroy the mighty and the holy people.
25 And through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify himself in his heart, and by peace shall destroy many: he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes;(JESUS) but he shall be broken without hand.DANIEL 11:36-40
36 And the king shall do according to his will;(EU PRESIDENT) and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done.
37 Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers,(THIS EU DICTATOR IS A EUROPEAN JEW) nor the desire of women, nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all.
38 But in his estate shall he honour the God of forces:(HES A MILITARY GINIUS) and a god whom his fathers knew not shall he honour with gold, and silver, and with precious stones, and pleasant things.
39 Thus shall he do in the most strong holds (CONTROL HEZBOLLAH,AL-QUAIDA MURDERERS ETC) with a strange god, whom he shall acknowledge and increase with glory: and he shall cause them to rule over many,(HIS ARMY LEADERS) and shall divide the land for gain.
40 And at the time of the end shall the king of the south(EGYPT) push at him:(EU DICTATOR PROTECTING ISRAELS SECURITY) and the king of the north(RUSSIA) shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over.
ZECHARIAH 14:12-13
