Jerusalem
Post/Israel News-New study debunks Gaza genocide claims, finds flaws in
UN, int'l reporting on war-Researchers also propose a new
methodological framework to ensure crucial fact-finding missions in
ongoing conflicts can continue their work while resisting political and
media-driven narratives.ByJACOB LAZNIK-SEPTEMBER 3, 2025 13:30
Narratives
about Israel committing genocide, war crimes, and a deliberate mass
starvation in the ongoing war in Gaza have been challenged, and in some
cases, debunked, in a comprehensive study published on Wednesday titled
“Debunking the Genocide Allegations: A Reexamination of the Israel-Hamas
War (2023-2025).”The study, published by the Begin-Sadat Center for
Strategic Studies and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, engaged in a
critical analysis to challenge the narrative of Israeli genocide during
the conflict by analyzing humanitarian reporting and casualty
data.Spanning 311 pages, the study also used quantitative analysis and
forensic documentation to examine and contest widely reported claims
from international organizations and courts.Led by Prof. Danny Orbach,
the authors said that their objective was to provide a factual analysis
rather than a legal or moral exoneration. The publication of the study
arrives at a crucial time, as the IDF is poised to begin the Gideon’s
Chariots II invasion of Gaza City, and as the International Association
of Genocide Scholars adopted a resolution on Monday, which says that
Israel’s military actions in the Gaza Strip meet the legal definition of
genocide.Divided into eight chapters, each section of the study
addressed specific allegations and themes related to the conflict and
its reporting. The overarching themes that emerged from the research were
a critique of humanitarian reporting, a reevaluation of casualty data,
and a call for a new methodological framework for analyzing
conflicts.Challenging the Starvation Narrative-Perhaps the study’s most
controversial finding concerns food supply to Gaza. The researchers said
that more food entered Gaza during the war than before October 7, 2023,
a claim that starkly contradicts widespread reports of imminent famine
and the deliberate starvation of the Gazan population on Israel’s
part.According to the study, the frequently cited requirement of 500 aid
trucks entering Gaza daily stems from what the authors called “a
misrepresentation by UN bodies.” They point to pre-war UN records
showing an average of only 73 food trucks per day in 2022.The 500 figure
has been regularly cited throughout the war by the UN, as well as
international media outlets such as CNN, The Guardian, and The
Washington Post.Until January 17, 2025, COGAT (the Israeli Defense
Ministry’s military body coordinating activities in the territories)
recorded an average of 101 food trucks daily, while retroactively
corrected but incomplete UNRWA data indicated 83 food trucks per day.In a
similar vein, the study said that food that entered Gaza during the
ceasefire “should have sufficed until late July 2025 according to WFP
[UN World Food Programme] projections.”The researchers attributed the
gap between projected sufficiency and reported shortages to “extensive
looting by Hamas.”They also disputed claims regarding Gaza’s
agricultural self-sufficiency. Contrary to allegations that 44% of
Gaza’s food comes from local agriculture, the study said, this figure
was “baseless.” The academics calculated that Gaza’s agriculture likely
accounted for no more than 12% of caloric consumption in 2005 and that
even if all of Gaza’s 2011 crops were replaced, the number of trucks
entering Gaza per capita throughout the war would still be 58% higher
than in 2011.The authors also made a point to “strongly criticize the
decision to stop aid to Gaza between March and May 2025,” acknowledging
humanitarian concerns even while disputing the genocide
narrative.Questioning Casualty Reporting-Further, the study took direct
aim at casualty figures reported by the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry
(GMoH), alleging systematic data manipulation. According to the
researchers, the Health Ministry, “per Hamas directives, categorizes all
deaths as civilian ones.”That, the analysts found, “significantly
skewed international reporting,” for there are indications that the
ministry’s lists include “age-related natural deaths, particularly of
women,” while failing to indicate “combat-aged men.”This selective
reporting, they argued, artificially inflates civilian casualty figures
and obscures the actual combatant-to-civilian death ratio. Case in
point, the study’s analysis of GMoH reports revealed a fluctuating and
often implausible distribution of the number of casualties. As of March
2025, the GMoH had reported 50,021 combat-related casualties. The study
noted that the number of reported widows, at 13,900, almost matched the
official excess male mortality figure of 13,964 for ages 18-59, which it
found to be “striking.”MOREOVER, THE authors presented data suggesting
that evacuation zones designated by the IDF were “significantly safer”
than other areas. According to their partial data analysis, less than 4%
of deaths occurred in the Humanitarian section of al-Mawasi and the
other central camps, areas marked as evacuation safe zones. They
attributed higher casualties elsewhere to “the failure of the UN to
cooperate with the establishment of such zones.”Systematic Critique of
International Reporting-A substantial portion of the study focused on
what the authors described as “systematic failures in UN and NGO
reporting.” They identified patterns of “circular citation, opaque
assessments, and unannounced retroactive corrections” that the
researchers said have distorted the international understanding of the
conflict. One example they highlighted involves UNRWA’s truck count
discrepancies. While UNRWA initially reported a 70% drop in aid after
May 2024 and the Rafah operation, the agency “later retroactively
corrected these reports.” Crucially, the authors noted, “this correction
was effectively unannounced and hence the supposed aid drop continues
to be broadly cited.”Separately, the study drew parallels to past
conflicts, noting a precedent in flawed reporting from the 2008-2009
Gaza War. They cited former UN jurist Richard Goldstone, who led the
United Nations Fact Finding Mission on the Gaza Conflict and later
expressed regret over some of his report’s conclusions. In a 2011
Washington Post op-ed, Goldstone wrote: “If I had known then what I know
now, the Goldstone Report would have been a different document.”The
study extended its analysis beyond Gaza as well, examining similar
patterns in Iraq during the UN Security Council’s 1990s sanctions
regime. Per the authors, claims of hundreds of thousands of child deaths
due to sanctions, based on Iraqi government data, were “later revealed
to be fabricated by the Iraqi authorities.”Introducing "Humanitarian
Bias"Introducing a new theoretical concept called “humanitarian bias,”
the report used this term to characterize what the authors perceived as
systematic errors in conflict reporting. They defined this as “a tendency
among aid organizations to accept alarming claims from stakeholders in
order to mobilize urgent action.”Commensurate with the researchers, this
is a bias that creates a feedback loop where “factual corrections are
often met with hostility or ignored altogether, undermining accuracy in
humanitarian reporting.”They added that even when myths are definitively
disproven, “corrections are rarely incorporated into public or academic
understandings.”An acute example of this theoretical concept, the study
continued, can be seen when UN aid chief Tom Fletcher falsely stated in
May 2025 that some 14,000 Gazan babies could die within the next 48
hours unless aid reached them.“[Aid has] not reached the communities [it
needs] to reach. This is baby food, baby nutrition. There are 14,000
babies that will die in the next 48 hours unless we can reach them,”
Fletcher told the BBC.When pressed on how he came to this figure, he
assured the interviewer that the UN had strong teams on the ground
formulating these assessments. Two days later, the UN retracted the
statement, with officials downplaying the original time frame of the
dire situation. The study also mentioned that humanitarian bias can be
particularly damaging when it prevents a realistic assessment of the
root causes of conflict and humanitarian crises, such as the actions of
non-state actors.Military Conduct Assessment-While challenging genocide
allegations, the study did not provide blanket exoneration of IDF
conduct. The authors said that “isolated incidents may point to
negligence or localized misconduct and suspicion of individual war
crimes.” However, they maintained, “no evidence was found of overarching
directives aimed at harming civilians.”The academics credited the IDF
with implementing what they called “Unprecedented steps such as early
warnings, precision targeting, and mission aborts to avoid civilian
harm,” actions they noted were “costly to the IDF” but “reduced
non-combatant casualties.”A comparison of the IDF’s
non-combatant-to-combatant casualty ratio to those of other Western
armies fighting urban insurgencies was also provided in the study. Based
on this, it was determined that the IDF’s ratio was relatively
low.Implications and Warnings-THE STUDY’S findings stand in stark
contrast to various international assessments. The International Court
of Justice has adopted provisional measures requiring Israel to prevent
genocide, though it did not order an immediate cessation of military
operations as South Africa had requested.Notably, these provisional
measures are legally binding on Israel, and there is no right of appeal,
though enforcement mechanisms remain limited.Various UN bodies and
humanitarian organizations have made, and continue to make, serious
allegations about Israel’s conduct.Reports have described the Jewish
state as using starvation as a weapon of war, with the Gaza Government
Media Office claiming that Israel blocked 3,800 aid trucks from entering
the territory. Furthermore, UNRWA officials have said that Israel is
“deliberately and unashamedly imposing inhumane conditions on civilians
in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.”In the study, Orbach warned of
the broader implications for international humanitarian law, saying, “If
every severe urban war were defined as genocide, it would ultimately
dilute the legal and moral power of the term.”To avoid humanitarian
bias, the study proposed a framework that prioritizes cross-referencing
multiple sources, systematic scrutiny, transparency, and resistance to
political and media-driven narratives. While “the suffering of civilians
in Gaza is both tragic and undeniable,” the researchers said,
humanitarian discourse must remain “anchored in verifiable facts” to
prevent the risk of future atrocities being overlooked.

because of Omar’s history of antisemitic and anti-American remarks. The
resolution was approved in a 218-211 vote after a heated debate in which
Democrats accused Republicans of racism and hypocrisy and claimed that
the GOP is only policing Democrats for questionable behavior. Omar and
several other Democrats openly accused Republicans of racism."I am

"Is anyone surprised that I am being targeted? Is anyone surprised that I

that they see me as a powerful voice that needs to be silenced?"

Michigan’s 12th district, and prioritizes ending poverty, promoting
environmental justice, providing access to healthcare and safe housing,
and promoting justice for all. She is passionate about eliminating gun
violence, protecting civil rights, and promoting women’s health and
bodily autonomy.Representative Tlaib is also a powerful advocate for the
Arab American community. Last summer, she reintroduced the resolution
honoring Arab American Heritage Month in April, expressing the
importance of recognizing the powerful contributions of Arab Americans
to our country.Furthermore, she, along with Congresswoman Eshoo (see
number 1 above) and two other congresswomen, introduced the Health
Equity and Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) Community Inclusion
Act of 2022. This bill aims to include “Middle Easterners and North
Africans” in the definition of “racial and ethnic minority groups” in
the Public Health Service Act of 1944. This would ensure that MENA
individuals are not categorized with white individuals as they have been
in the past and instead have their health disparities addressed and
their needs met. What Does the Future Hold?It is clear that Arab
Americans are becoming increasingly engaged in public service and the
government. As we saw, the current six Arab American members of Congress
are thoroughly engaged in important issues that affect us as
constituents and often collaborate on legislation. However, our
contributions have long gone unnoticed, which is why the empowerment of
Arab Americans and our increased representation in the public sector is
crucial. As Arab Americans continue to succeed, we will undoubtedly see
even more Arab American representation in Congress, including in the
U.S. Senate. Perhaps, it is time to form a Congressional Arab Caucus, to
further exhibit solidarity among our Arab American leaders in the
federal legislature.
Highlights From the Second Annual People’s Conference for Palestine-International Desk-September 6, 2025-Al-Akhbar English
Over
4000 participants have registered for this year’s second annual
People’s Conference for Palestine, which took place in Detroit,
Michigan, from August 19 to 31. Organized by a coalition of groups led
by the Palestinian Youth Movement, and livestreamed by BreakThrough
News, the conference carried the guiding principle of “Gaza is the
compass.” The slogan reflected the centrality of Gaza and the ongoing
Zionist occupation and genocide as the primary contradictions and points
of struggle against US-Israeli imperialism.Speakers at the conference
included Dr. Ghassan Abu Sita, Democratic Front for the Liberation of
Palestine leader and former political prisoner Omar Assaf, Palestinian
activist and former political prisoner Mahmoud Khalil, and Congresswoman
Rashida Tlaib. The goal was to propel the movement for Palestine in the
imperial core by sharpening the political analysis of attendees,
strengthening their commitment to the cause and allowing them to connect
with other organizations around North America. This year’s conference
saw the launch of the “AIPAC out of US Politics” campaign, which seeks
to put an end to the influence of the Israeli lobby within American
politics.A Year since the launch of Mask Off Maersk-Last year's
conference launched the Mask off Maersk campaign, initiated by the
Palestinian Youth Movement to demand an arms embargo by exposing and
targeting the Danish shipping giant’s complicity in transporting
military cargo to Israel. The plenary led by Palestinian Youth Movement
organizer Aisha Nizar, Progressive International researcher Sacchin
Padaga and Moroccan dockworker Ismail Lghazaoui reflected on the Mask
Off Maersk campaign one year after its launch. They discussed how global
efforts between researchers and workers continue to disrupt supply
chains that funnel weapon components to the Zionist entity. The strategy
behind targeting Maersk was that it served as a common denominator
between the various arms manufacturers that would supply Israel, leading
to a more precise and effective campaign. Research revealed that Maersk
uses civilian infrastructure to ship military cargo, violating
international law.The campaign has already achieved tangible results.
After findings that Maersk was shipping to and from Israeli settlements
were deemed illegal under international law, joined with continued
demands for an arms embargo, the shipping company quietly announced that
it would cease operations inWest Bank settlements. Speakers stressed
that such victories only raise the ceiling for future demands.Keynote:
Gaza is the Center of the World-The conference’s keynote panel spoke to
the centrality of Gaza not just in the struggle for the liberation of
Palestine, but as the most heightened frontline in the global battle
against imperialism. Gaza has exposed the real position of every
geopolitical actor, organization, and institution in the world. Speaker
Huwaida Arraf, founder of the International Solidarity Movement, echoed
the conference’s guiding principle by stating that “Gaza is our compass,
because it points us to the truth, freedom. It can't be won in
isolation. We know when we are fighting for Gaza, we're fighting for
ourselves. We're fighting for a world where no people live in cages
under siege, under the root of militarism and fascism.”The keynote was
held in Anas Al-Sharif Hall, named after the martyred journalist from
Gaza. Speaker after speaker emphasized the bravery of the people in
Gaza, where every action in service of life and its sustenance, be it
practicing medicine or journalism, is forcibly turned into an act of
resistance. Speakers like Professor Hatem Bazian and Mahmoud Khalil
stressed the necessity of centering Gaza in the movement’s work and that
attempts to silence the truth only reveal Zionism’s moral
bankruptcy.Rashida Tlaib's remarks and plenary on the Fight for
Palestine in North America-In one of the most widely covered moments of
the conference, Michigan congresswoman Rashida Tlaib addressed the
crowd, speaking to the rifts and sentiments developing in Washington D.C
as a result of people mobilizing in support of Palestine across the
country. As part of her impassioned speech, Tlaib spoke to her
Palestinian background, tying her family’s resilience to the broader
struggle for survival and dignity.“They thought they could kill us, rape
us, imprison us, uproot us from our olive tree farms, starve our
children to death, and we would disappear. Well, guess what? Now we're
in Congress, we’re in every corner of the United States… They will never
understand, even after seven decades, that we aren't going
anywhere.”Not shying away from calling the United States an empire,
Tlaib addressed the way this genocide has become profitable for
presidents and members of Congress, “What our government is willing to
do to Palestininas they are willing to do to all of you. It is no
surprise to me, as the daughter of Detroit, that I see our government
which has supplied the bombs and excuses Israel from destroying
literally every single day hospitals, communities, in gaza and
manufacturing mass starvation, is also the same government that is
defunding healthcare and food assistance programs here in our country.”
She continued, “It is no surprise that a government that uses its
military force to kill and torture and kidnap people abroad will turn
those same forces, on its people here on the streets. A government that
doesn't value human life in Gaza, will never value human life in our
country.”Beyond the halls of Congress, discussions also focused on the
state of the Palestine movement in North America. Palestinian Youth
Movement speaker Mohammad Nabulsi described two phases: under the Biden
administration, when organizers sought to generate a crisis within the
Democratic Party, and under the Trump presidency, when that strategy
lost traction. He argued that the movement must now shift toward
targeting private corporations complicit in genocide as part of the
broader struggle for democratization.“With the emergence of Trump in
power, what happened is that we no longer have this administration that
pretends to speak to you,” he added. In recognizing that the movement
was not able to translate popular power into policy changes within
Western governments, targeting the private companies that enable this
genocide must be one of the main focuses of the movement. He views this
as part of the broader struggle for the democratization of society,
since the factions in power have decided to disregard the fact that the
majority of people in the United States support an arms embargo.A
representative from National Students for Justice in Palestine
highlighted the legacy of student movements historically, calling it the
largest since the anti-Vietnam War student protests of the 1960s. He
emphasized the lessons learned from the 2020 uprisings, particularly
around tactics and frameworks for organizing. Still, the panelists
warned that shifting public opinion is not enough without translating
that momentum into economic, political, and narrative power. To that
point, panelists reiterated that the fight for Palestine cannot exist in
isolation, but rather must be part of a broader struggle to combat
capitalism and imperialism, connected to workers’ movements that have
the power to drive local arms embargoes (e.g., Maersk, Microsoft,
Palantir), divestment campaigns and union power.
“DEARBORNISTAN”
in Michigan, with one of the largest Muslim populations in America, is
now enforcing Sharia law against non-Muslims-August 28, 2025 by
BareNakedIslam
Walking around the city of Dearborn, you don’t
even feel like you are still in America anymore. Chants of “Death to
America,” “Death to Israel,” can be heard in the streets and a variety
of known Muslim terrorists, including Hamas, are celebrated. But if
you’re a non-Muslim there who posts something on Facebook that Muslims
take as a direct threat, even though it isn’t, you will be arrested by
the Muslim police there.RAIR FondationDearborn, Michigan, has become the
model city for America’s double standard: a place where the mayor and
police chief, both drawn from a radical-aligned Islamic community, wield
power not to protect free speech, but to punish dissent. In November
2021, Abdullah Hammoud made history as the first Arab-American and
Muslim elected as mayor of Dearborn. Just a year later, in 2022, he
elevated Issa Shahin to become the city’s first Muslim police chief.
Shahin is the 47-year-old son of an Egyptian father and Albanian mother,
married to a Jordanian-American woman. He now controls Dearborn’s law
enforcement arm.Together, Hammoud and Shahin represent a historic shift:
both of Dearborn’s most powerful offices, political and police, are
held by Muslim men deeply tied to a very controversial Islamic
community. And that fact matters, because under their leadership, a
troubling pattern has emerged. Non-Muslims are punished for reckless
words, while Muslims are shielded when they chant open
incitement.Dearborn’s new reality came into focus this month. Anthony
Young, 27, allegedly made a foolish comment about the annual Arba’een
march in Dearborn during a Facebook argument. This comment has led to
shocking repercussions. The Arba’een Procession commemorates the
martyrdom of Mohammed’s grandson Imam Hussein, killed in 680 AD during
the battle of Karbalaa. Imam Husham Al-Husainy leads the Arba’een
procession, where thousands of Shia Muslims take to the streets. His
mosque, the Karbalaa Islamic Educational Center, is named after the town
where Imam Hussein was martyred. “Today, the whole world needs the
meaning of the movement of Imam Hussein,” Al-Husainy said.Young
allegedly made a reckless comment on Facebook: “Someone should show up
and let a couple of clips out.” Within hours, multiple officers
descended on his home to arrest him.The phrase implies violence, but its
indirect wording (“someone should” vs. “I will”) makes it vague,
speculative, and far from a credible threat. Still, Dearborn police
treated him like a terrorist, storming his house as if words alone were
bullets. On Saturday, Aug. 16, 2025, Dearborn Police Department took a
27-year-old white male from Garden City into custody within hours after
he allegedly made threats to harm those attending a march for justice
commemorating Ashura in Dearborn. Police learned of harmful and
dangerous threats made by the suspect as part of its routine online
monitoring operations. On Monday, Aug. 18, Anthony Young, 27, of Garden
City was charged with one misdemeanor count of Malicious Use of
Telecommunication Services. Young was arraigned in front of Judge
Somers. A bond was set at $5000 and Young was ordered to wear a GPS
tether. Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin stated, ‘Dearborn Police
ensures safety and security at the many cherished community events that
occur in our city both by our presence, planning, and preparedness, but
also by vigilantly monitoring online spaces for threats made against
citizens. We will always pursue arrests and accountability from
individuals in such cases.’“I got into an argument with some people on
Facebook,” Young says in body camera footage.Anthony Young’s arrest for a
reckless Facebook post in Dearborn exposes a glaring hypocrisy. While
police swiftly jailed him for words, the Arba’een march’s leader, Imam
Husham Al-Husainy, openly supports Hezbollah and Iran’s “Death to
America” rhetoric without consequence. The real threat is militant
Muslims, and it is ignored because the very people in power are aligned
with them. In Dearborn, the city is run by those who excuse, enable, and
even embrace that threat. While Young faces consequences for his words,
the march’s leader has faced less scrutiny for far more serious
statements. Imam Husham Al-Husainy supports Hezbollah, a designated
terrorist organization. Additionally, he backs Iran, where “Death to
America” serves as a literal political slogan since the 1979 Islamic
Revolution.Islamic thought leaders regularly issue fatwas against
President Trump and Israel. As reported just this month at PJ Media,
“thousands of Iranian Muslim clerics, including prominent
government-tied clerics, are once again declaring that assassinating
Donald Trump would be a holy service to Allah.”Every year since 2004,
Iraqi-American Shia cleric Imam Husham Al-Husainy has led the Dearborn
Arba’een Procession. The march honors the martyrdom of Hussain ibn Ali,
the grandson of Muhammad at the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD. RAIR
founder Amy Mek writes about this “controversial show of power” vastly
ignored by the legacy media. The Double Standard in Dearborn-Last year,
at a Quds Day militant rally in Dearborn, Abdullah Hammoud himself
admitted that violent chants of “Death to America” and “Death to Israel”
were shouted from the stage. No one was arrested. No one was
investigated. Not a single police officer was dispatched. On September
25, 2024, Hammoud spoke at a “Stand with Lebanon” rally in Dearborn,
where the crowd broke into chants of “Death to Israel.” The event
featured Osama Siblani, publisher of the Arab American News. Siblani
hailed slain Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah as a “hero” and told Jews
to “go back to Poland.” When the crowd erupted with chants, Siblani
encouraged them. He said: “Believe me, they will take care of the job,”
an apparent reference to Hezbollah attacks on Israel.Hammoud embraced
Siblani on stage and delivered remarks attacking U.S. support for
Israel. But he never condemned the “Death to Israel” chants or Siblani’s
praise for Hezbollah. Instead, Hammoud used the rally to promote the
anti-Israel boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) movement.CAIR’s

The Simplification of the Arab World in Western
Media-posted on: Sep 3, 2025-By: Fayzeh Abou Ardat / Arab America
Contributing Writer
Western media typically portrays the Arab
world in simplistic binary terms: moderates vs extremists, victims vs
aggressors, democracy vs terror. These frames provide clarity for
international audiences while sometimes obscuring historical context,
internal variety, and political complexity. The article examines how
binary storytelling influences coverage of the Arab world. It uses
recent examples to illustrate why simplicity persists and the costs it
imposes on policy, representation, and public understanding.Media
framing is not unique to this region, but it is extremely powerful here
because of long-running conflicts, limits on journalistic access, and
the strategic exploitation of information by both state and non-state
actors. Headlines, images, and vocabulary typically serve as moral cues
for readers before they reach the substantial material. Audiences also
consume news with pre-existing ideological filters. According to
criticism from late August 2025, consumers frequently “absorb
information” that reinforces prior beliefs of the Israeli-Palestinian
conflict, demonstrating how media and audiences reinforce one
another.2025 Case Studies: Where the Binary Breaks Down-One of the
structural constraints is access. Journalists in Gaza face harsh access
restrictions, requiring military escorts or relying on local reporters.
By mid-2025, it is reported that approximately 200 journalists had been
killed since October 2023. Such environments promote dependence on
official sources while limiting possibilities to contextualize events.
Broadcasters published a united statement calling for improved
journalist protection, noting that reliable reporting is impossible
without safety and accessIt becomes more evident when questions of
accountability arise. In July 2025, the BBC withdrew an independently
made Gaza documentary after it emerged that the child narrator was
linked to a Hamas official, an omission judged inaccurate. Ofcom
investigated whether the public had been misled. Some saw the debate as
proof that Western media was prone to manipulation. Others argued that
humanitarian realities were being undermined through technicalities.
This demonstrates how biases become part of the binary, detracting from
the more difficult editorial challenge of validating information under
harsh conditions.Domestic media also shape frames in ways that may
conflict with international reporting. Israeli television was criticized
in August 2025 for downplaying famine assessments in Gaza. Critics of
Western media claim that focusing primarily on Palestinian suffering
risks undermining the operations of Hamas and other armed groups. Each
media creates its own simplifications, which are internally
comprehensible to its audience but incomplete when examined in
isolation. The digital environment emphasizes binaries. The 2025 Reuters
Institute Digital News Report reveals increased news avoidance and
falling confidence, particularly on divisive issues such as Gaza. Social
platforms, which are designed for speed and emotion, prioritize single
images or quick clips above a thorough background. The Institute for
Strategic Dialogue’s January 2025 paper demonstrated how disinformation
networks took advantage of this trend, filling European social media
with polarizing narratives about the conflict. The Cost of
Simplification-Binary storytelling has important consequences for
politics and public perception. The initial cost is policy distortion.
When complicated situations are portrayed as simple battles between
“good” and “evil,” governments are compelled to make symbolic gestures
rather than more nuanced decisions. For example, Western deliberations
in 2025 regarding military aid packages frequently presented the matter
as a test of devotion. They framed the issue as “democracy” against
“terror,” instead of addressing the actual balance of humanitarian and
geopolitical factors. This approach can result in policies that
disregard long-term implications in favour of short-term moral
clarity.Stereotyping is a secondary cost. Western media fosters
stereotypes that obfuscate cultural, political, and social variety by
portraying the Arab world as a source of constant instability or
bloodshed. Civil society groups, reform movements, and everyday life
frequently disappear, to be replaced by repeating images of conflict.
This contributes to humanitarian situations in the region that are
viewed as impossible. While foreign audiences become desensitized.
Coverage of the Gaza famine in 2025 exemplifies this risk. Repeated
pictures of devastation, without a larger political context, risk
normalizing suffering rather than inspiring constructive
involvement.Simplification inhibits democratic discussion in the Western
world. Citizens who only experience binary narratives are less prepared
to question policy decisions or interact with opposing viewpoints. The
damage is thus twofold: it distorts our perception of the Arab world and
limits democratic discourse at home.
Undersea cables cut in the
Red Sea, disrupting internet access in Asia and the Mideast By JON
GAMBRELL-Updated 2:24 AM EDT, September 7, 2025
DUBAI, United
Arab Emirates (AP) — Undersea cable cuts in the Red Sea disrupted
internet access in parts of Asia and the Middle East, experts said
Sunday, though it wasn’t immediately clear what caused the
incident. There has been concern about the cables being targeted in a Red
Sea campaign by Yemen’s Houthi rebels, which the rebels describe as an
effort to pressure Israel to end its war on Hamas in the Gaza Strip. But
the Houthis have denied attacking the lines in the past.Undersea cables
are one of the backbones of the internet, along with satellite
connections and land-based cables. Typically, internet service providers
have multiple access points and reroute traffic if one fails, though it
can slow down access for users.Microsoft announced via a status website
that the Mideast “may experience increased latency due to undersea
fiber cuts in the Red Sea.” The Redmond, Washington-based firm did not
immediately elaborate, though it said that internet traffic not moving
through the Middle East “is not impactedNetBlocks, which monitors
internet access, said “a series of subsea cable outages in the Red Sea
has degraded internet connectivity in multiple countries,” which it said
included India and Pakistan. It blamed “failures affecting the SMW4 and
IMEWE cable systems near Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.”The South East
Asia–Middle East–Western Europe 4 cable is run by Tata Communications,
part of the Indian conglomerate. The India-Middle East-Western Europe
cable is run by another consortium overseen by Alcatel-Lucent. Neither
firm did not immediately responded to requests for comment.Pakistan
Telecommunications Co. Ltd., a telecommunication giant in that country,
noted that the cuts had taken place in a statement on Saturday.Saudi
Arabia did not immediately acknowledge the disruption and authorities
there did not respond to a request for comment. In the United Arab
Emirates, home to Dubai and Abu Dhabi, internet users on the country’s
state-owned Du and Etisalat networks complained of slower internet
speeds. The government did not immediately acknowledge the
disruption.Subsea cables can be cut by anchors dropped from ships, but
can also be targeted in attacks. It can take weeks for repairs to be
made as a ship and crew must locate themselves over the damaged
cable. The lines’ cut comes as Yemen’s Houthi rebels remain locked in a
series of attacks targeting Israel over the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza
Strip. Israel has responded with airstrikes, including one that killed
top leaders within the rebel movement. In early 2024, Yemen’s
internationally recognized government in exile alleged that the Houthis
planned to attack undersea cables in the Red Sea. Several were cut, but
the Houthis denied being responsible. On Sunday morning, the Houthis’
al-Masirah satellite news channel acknowledged that the cuts had taken
place, citing NetBlocks. From November 2023 to December 2024, the Houthis
targeted more than 100 ships with missiles and drones over the
Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip. In their campaign so far, the
Houthis have sunk four vessels and killed at least eight mariners. The
Iranian-backed Houthis stopped their attacks during a brief ceasefire in
the war. They later became the target of an intense weekslong campaign
of airstrikes ordered by U.S. President Donald Trump before he declared a
ceasefire had been reached with the rebels. The Houthis sank two
vessels in July, killing at least four on board, with others believed to
be held by the rebels. The Houthis’ new attacks come as a new possible
ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war remains in the balance. Meanwhile, the
future of talks between the U.S. and Iran over Tehran’s battered
nuclear program is in question after Israel launched a 12-day war
against the Islamic Republic in which the Americans bombed three Iranian
atomic sites.
