Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas has accused Israel of trying to “destroy” the Al-Aqsa Mosque by allowing Jews to pray on the Temple Mount.In an interview he gave on Thursday to the Saudi-based Al-Watan newspaper, Abbas said that "the Al-Aqsa Mosque is in danger," claiming that Israel prevents PA Arabs from praying at the mosque, while allowing “extremist Jews" to worship there. This, he claimed, is proof that Israel has a "malicious" and dangerous plan to destroy the mosque and rebuild the “false” Holy Temple in its place, as he put it.Arabs continuously make false accusations that Israel is trying "Judaizing" the Temple Mount, sometimes resorting to ridiculous propaganda such as accusing Israel of using chemicals to erode the foundations of the mosque in order to cause it to collapse.A claim similar to Abbas’s was made several months ago by a PA official who also said that Israel was trying to build a new Holy Temple on the Temple Mount.The official claimed that an analysis of Jerusalem's development plans finds that there is an intention to Judaize the Al-Aqsa Mosque, and within this framework build the Temple on its ruins and to then reduce the number of Arab residents in the city.The reality, however, is that it is the Jews – not the Arabs – who are discriminated against when they want to pray on the Temple Mount. The Waqf, which was left in charge of the Temple Mount following Jerusalem’s reunification in 1967, has removed every sign of ancient Jewish presence at the Jewish holy site.Police, in an attempt to appease the Waqf, limit the number of Jewish worshippers allowed on the Temple Mount at one time in order to prevent conflict with Muslim worshippers. They often close the Mount to Jews in response to Muslim riots – despite evidence that Muslim riots have been planned in advance for the specific purpose of forcing Jews out.In the interview with the Saudi newspaper, Abbas also made it clear that no negotiations will take place with Israel as long as it continues to build in Judea and Samaria and refuses to accept a two-state solution based on the indefensible pre-1967 lines, that were termed “Auschwitz borders” by the late former Foreign Minister Abba Eban.

As for the idea of land swaps between Israel and the PA, Abbas said that these should be limited, but added that in any event the PA will demand all of Judea, Samaria and Gaza.Jerusalem, Abbas said, is not up for negotiations or bargaining, since the Arabs will never give up on it, and there will not be a Palestinian state without eastern Jerusalem as its capital.

Delusional Abbas says that Israel plans to demolish Al Aqsa Mosque

Yesterday, everyone's favorite "moderate" Mahmoud Abbas pushed some more crazed conspiracy theories
which are perfectly acceptable in mainstream Arabic discourse and that are rarely reported in the West.

In an interview with Saudi Arabia's Al Watan, Abbas spoke of the "imminent danger faced by the Al-Aqsa Mosque," claiming that excavations carried out by Israel on the courtyard and under the foundations threatens the mosque with collapse. Abbas bitterly complained about the "fanatic Jewish extremists" being allowed to enter the Temple Mount "to practice their religion," explaining that it is all part of "an evil and dangerous scheme to destroy [Al Aqsa] and establish the alleged Temple."This is not the first time Abbas has pushed nutty conspiracy theories. In no less a venue than the UN, Abbas claimed that Jews are training wild dogs to attack Arabs and releasing wild pigs to wreak havoc on their fields. Then, as now, the Western media ignored Abbas' lunatic rants. They are emotionally invested in Abbas as a reasonable peacemaker fighting stoically against the extremist Netanyahu government. Noting that Abbas embraces the most insane anti-Israel conspiracy theories simply does not fit that narrative, so it is not reported. After all, no sane person can insist Israel give up more concessions and sign agreements with someone who does not have a basic grasp of reality. Abbas' insanity must be hush-hushed, for the good of the Middle East.

Severe space weather could be as devastating to the planet as serious tornadoes and other natural disasters, NASA chief Charles Bolden said in a public address Tuesday (June 4).Bolden spoke before scientists and industry members at the Space Weather Enterprise Forum, which was held at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Auditorium and Science Center in Silver Spring, Md.The daylong conference aimed to bring together researchers and policymakers to identify how the sun's activity impacts Earth, and the potentially harmful effects of space weather."This conference shines a spotlight on another naturally occurring phenomenon that can be just as punishing as a tornado — space weather," Bolden said in his written remarks for the event, after mentioning his grief at the lives lost during the deadly outbreak of tornadoes in the Midwest in recent weeks.Strong solar storms can damage satellites in space and, if aimed at Earth, can interfere with communications infrastructure and power grids on the ground. Conference attendees discussed potential vulnerabilities in existing infrastructure, and how they can be made more robust. Space weather researchers also highlighted ongoing mitigation efforts, including improvements in technology and modeling that may help predict future storms. Developing a clearer picture of when these storms may strike, and their potential impacts, is crucial, Bolden said."Given the growing importance of space to our nation's economic well being and security, it is of increasing importance that NASA and its partner agencies continue to advance our nation's capability to understand and predict space weather events," he explained.The radiation released by severe sun storms can also be risky for astronauts living aboard the International Space Station. Understanding the way humans in space are affected by space weather will help NASA plan future manned missions to the moon, Mars or beyond, Bolden said.Last week, a new study found that astronauts on a mission to Mars could be exposed to dangerous levels of radiation from both solar particles and cosmic rays from outside the solar system, even with shielding on the spacecraft. The research, which was published in the journal Science, determined that on a trip to Mars, spaceflyers would be subject to radiation doses between 100 and 1,000 times higher than on Earth."The findings will aid design of future human missions by reducing uncertainty about how much shielding from radiation astronauts need," Bolden said. "For these and other reasons this forum and our efforts to study, monitor, and mitigate radiation exposure are so very important."The NASA administrator also spoke about the need for international cooperation in studying the effects of space weather."Space weather is a problem that crosses all borders and demands input from our international counterparts," Bolden said.Next week, Bolden is scheduled to speak at the 56th session of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space in Vienna, Austria. Floods in central Europe continue to create havoc

Andrea's rain spawns flood warnings on East Coast

NEW YORK (AP) — Soaking rains that spawned numerous flood warnings pushed some streams and creeks over their banks throughout the Northeast, yet the first named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season sped up the Eastern Seaboard without causing major damage.The storm was centered over eastern Long Island in New York by 5 a.m. Saturday, with winds of 45 mph, and flood warnings were in effect for parts of New England. The storm was expected to reach Canadian waters by Sunday.After bringing rain, strong winds and tornadoes to Florida, Andrea lost most of its tropical characteristics late Friday into Saturday. The storm was packing winds that gusted between 20 to 30 mph, and officials warned of near gale force from New Jersey to Canada through Sunday.The storm was blamed for one traffic-related death in Virginia.
Late Friday, the National Hurricane Center in Miami discontinued all tropical storm warnings, but cautioned about possible coastal and localized flooding from New Jersey to New England.Dean Iovino, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Mount Laurel, N.J., said Saturday the storm was expected to pick up speed through the overnight hours, and could drop from 3 to 5 inches of rain in areas from New Jersey into New England before tapering off.Officials in the Mid-Atlantic region and Northeast had prepared for it Friday night. New York City activated its flash flooding plan, and heavy rainfall resulted in a number of flash floods, causing some sections of roadways to be closed throughout Long Island.A number of roads were flooded in the Boston area. All expressed  strong support for Israel’s security and for a renewed and energetic launch of the peace process.Tzipi Livni said that creating a Palestinian state was “the only way to keep Israel both as a Jewish state and a democratic state.”  She considered that pursuing a 2-state settlement was “not a favor to the Palestinians, but rather a necessity for Israel”, reflecting “core Jewish values.”“Tzipi Livni delivered an impassioned speech.  The urgency in her voice was obvious from start to finish.  The love of Israel was palpable.” Said AJC Executive Director David Harris.“Her vision of two states for two peoples – Israel as the solution to the national aspirations of the Jews, Palestine as the solution to the national aspirations of the Palestinians – is one that AJC has long shared”, Harris continued.  “Israel has consistently sought to get the Palestinians back to the negotiating table, so far to no avail.  One can only hope that this time, with renewed effort by both Jerusalem and Washington, the outcome might be different.”Minister Livni laid forth some concrete proposals:  negotiations with the Palestinian Authority , while at the same time isolating Hamas which controls Gaza. An agreement between Israel and the P.A. would be backed by the Arab League, which has pledged its support.  This would stave off extremist forces in the Arab world, she said.  The P.A., she continued, has already accepted demilitarization as a condition, and the major Jewish settlements on the West bank which occupy a small percentage of land would remain Israeli, not precisely following the 1967 armistice lines.John Kerry, in his first address to the Jewish community as Secretary of State, presented a similar vision for ending the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.  “Make no mistake” he said, “the President of the United States and I share your unshakeable commitment to Israel’s security” which, he indicated, covered threats from Iran and that regime’s support for Hezbollah.  “The United States will prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon”, Kerry said.He stressed that while undoubtedly the Israeli-Palestinian conflict was “not the cause of problems in the Middle East”, Kerry repeatedly emphasized that “the best way to truly ensure Israel’s security, today and for future generations, is by ending once and for all the conflict with the Palestinians” via a 2-state solution. “If we do not succeed now”, he said, “we may never get another chance.”  Kerry, who has visited Israel three times since becoming Secretary of State four months ago and worked for many years with Israeli leaders as U.S. Senator, recalls that “Each time I go, the deep personal connection that I feel with the state and the people of Israel is only strengthened.” He feels he is “a proven friend of over 30 years”.He said he well understood the frustration felt by many Israelis about prospects for peace, but doing nothing would only lead to a downwards spiral. Instead, “a stable Palestinian State with secure borders, with assured borders and a flourishing economy will only strengthen Israel’s security and Israel’s future.”Kerry considers the Arab Peace Initiative as a hopeful sign. Spy scandal to impact talks on EU-US data treaty

The program - called Prism - is the latest in a series of secret data gathering schemes put in place after 9/11.
Europeans have had their banking data, air passenger data - and now their personal online data - snooped on by US authorities without their knowledge or the knowledge of their governments.On Thursday (6 June), US intelligence chief James Clapper defended Prism, saying it contains "numerous safeguards that protect privacy and civil liberties"He said in a written statement that: “There is a robust legal regime in place governing all activities conducted pursuant to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act which ensures that those activities comply with the Constitution and laws and appropriately protect privacy and civil liberties."
Members of the European Parliament overseeing talks on a new EU-US data protection agreement reacted with scepticism, however."Common rules will only be possible if the principles of data protection will be accepted in the US. The foreseen, but struggling EU-US umbrella agreement, would be a good chance to show that this is the case," German Green MEP Jan Philipp Albrecht told this website.Dutch Liberal deputy, Sophie in't Veld, told EUobserver the Prism scandal "could help raise awareness" of the issues in Brussels.
She said it should prompt the European Commission take a tougher stance in future US talks.But she added that progress on the data pact has stalled because the US, as well as private Internet firms, are trying to claw EU data safeguards out of the text."I am somewhat surprised everybody is getting so excited about this latest scandal. It is just one of the many examples of the US tapping into our data without telling us. And of the EU commission doing nothing about it," in't Veld said.The Dutch politician noted that past EU-US deals on data security - such as Swift (bank details) or PNR (air-passenger data) - were formally concluded years after they had already been secretly implemented."They are not really applied, since there is no limitation to the amount of data sent to them [the US]," she noted.In't Veld said Europeans should put more hope in US citizens than in Brussels to protect their rights.She said that if ordinary Americans demand a roll-back on data snooping, it might force the US to take a softer line in EU talks."The EU commission has a strong tradition of late and inadequate reaction," In't Veld noted.A commission spokeswoman told this website on Friday (7 June) it has no comment at this stage on Prism or its impact on the EU-US data treaty.

New EU rules to stop banks rigging benchmarks

BRUSSELS - Banks should publicly detail how and why they set financial sector benchmarks, according to new rules on rate-setting published by EU regulators Thursday (6 June).The regime, prepared by the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA), the Paris-based pan-European watchdog, would require rate-setting panels to publish information showing how they have arrived at their decisions.They would also require data on calculation methods and quotes for all benchmarks, while contingency plans should be set up in case the supply of data needed to set a rate dried up.In a statement, ESMA, which drafted the rules in consultation with the London-based European Banking Authority (EBA), said that it wanted to beef up "the robustness of the procedures, ensuring transparency to the public and creating a level-playing field."The new rules would "give clarity to benchmark providers and users in the European Union about what is expected of them when engaged in this critical market activity," said Steven Maijoor, chairman of ESMA."These principles reflect the wider work being carried out on benchmarks and their immediate adoption will help restore confidence in financial benchmarks and prepare the way for future legislative change," he added.For its part, ESMA could be in line for sweeping new powers in the control of Libor.Internal market commissioner, Michel Barnier, whose remit covers financial services, is expected to table legislation that would shift decision-making on Libor from London to Paris later this summer.The Libor rate-fixing scandal made headlines last summer, with a string of major banks in the US and the EU implicated in keeping the rate artificially high over a period of several years.Among them, Barclays, Royal Bank of Scotland and the Swiss-based UBS, were fined £1.7 billion (€2 billion) for their role in manipulating the rate.
Libor, which is the London-set interest rate at which banks lend to each other, determines the price of an estimated $300 trillion worth of financial instruments.However, some regulators believe that Libor is beyond saving, including Gary Gensler, chairman of the influential US Commodity Futures Trading Commission.
Gensler believes that Libor does not reflect genuine inter-bank lending rates and should be replaced by other benchmarks.Meanwhile, MEPs are also keen to include criminal sanctions for rate fixing.

Russia ready to join UN peacekeeping mission on Israel-Syria border

Russia may replace Austrian UN peacekeepers who withdrew from the Golan Heights on the Israel-Syria border. A UN representative has welcomed the proposal, first announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin.“In view of the complicated situation which is currently unfolding on the Golan Heights, we could replace the Austrian peacekeeping contingent, which is withdrawing from this region, on the disengagement line between the Israeli troops and the Syrian army,” Putin said on Friday.“Naturally, that will happen only if the regional powers show interest in our proposal and if the U.N. secretary-general asks us to do that,” he added.During his last visit to Russia, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon asked Moscow to “bolster its involvement in the UN peacekeeping operations,” the president said.

UN: Syria refugees could reach 3.5M this year

BERLIN (AP) — The number of Syrian refugees in neighboring countries could more than double to 3.5 million by the end of the year, the United Nations said Friday as the global body launched its biggest humanitarian appeal ever.The U.N. asked donor countries for $5.2 billion to help alleviate the suffering of millions of people inside and outside Syria who are struggling with the effects of a conflict that has dragged on for more than two years."We expect that we might reach 3.5 million refugees by the end of the year," U.N. refugee chief Antonio Guterres told a news conference in Geneva. Around 1.6 million people have already sought refuge in Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey, Iraq and Egypt. Another 7,000 refugees are crossing the border each day, he said."If the fighting doesn't stop, we risk an explosion in the Middle East for which the international community is simply not prepared," Guterres said, noting that Lebanon and Jordan in particular have borne the financial brunt of hosting about 500,000 Syrian refugees each.In an unusual move, the two countries joined the U.N. appeal and asked international donors for $450 million and $380 million, respectively.Aid agencies requested just under $3 billion to help people who have fled Syria, and $1.4 billion to pay for humanitarian operations inside the country.The new appeal presented at an international conference in Geneva is a sharp increase from the $3 billion the global body had previously estimated it would need this year, of which only $1.4 billion has so far been pledged.Still, Guterres sought to put the $5.2 billion appeal into perspective, noting that it was dwarfed by recent bailouts of Western banks and equivalent to "what the Americans spend on ice cream in 32 days.""These are massive figures, but those figures mask a humanitarian tragedy," said Valerie Amos, the U.N.'s top humanitarian official, citing the toll of more than 80,000 deaths since the uprising against Bashar Assad began in March 2011. Many farmers in Syria are unable to tend their fields and the price of basic goods has risen steadily in recent months. The World Food Program said it plans to provide assistance to 4 million people inside Syria by September — in addition to more than 2 million refugees in neighboring countries — for which it needs $1 billion this year.The World Health Organization warned recently that outbreaks of hepatitis, typhoid, cholera and dysentery are inevitable. A third of public hospitals in Syria aren't functioning and drinking water supplies have been seriously disrupted, Amos said.Shelter for refugees is another urgent priority. Many of those who have fled Syria are living in crowded and sometimes squalid conditions, according to the aid group Doctors without Borders. Lebanon and Jordan asked donors for $450 million and $380 million respectively.
International efforts to bring the Syrian government and opposition groups to the negotiating table suffered a setback earlier this week, when the U.S. and Russia acknowledged there was no chance of holding a peace conference this month as previously planned. But even if diplomacy were to prevail, Syria's needs wouldn't cease, Amos said."The levels of destruction mean that even if a political solution was reached tomorrow, Syria would still need humanitarian aid in 2014," she said.

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan flew back to a Turkey rocked by days of anti-government unrest on Friday and declared before a sea of flag-waving supporters at Istanbul airport: "These protests must end immediately.""No power but Allah can stop Turkey's rise," he told thousands who gathered in the early hours to greet him in the first pro-Erdogan rally since demonstrations began a week ago.
At Istanbul's Taksim Square, centre of the protests now occupied by thousands around the clock, some chanted "Tayyip resign" as they watched a broadcast of the address. In the capital Ankara, the Kugulu Park echoed to anti-government slogans, while protesters danced or sang the national anthem.Western governments including the United States, which sees Turkey as a key NATO ally in the Middle East, bordering Iran, Iraq and Syria, have expressed concern about heavy-handed police action. Washington has projected Turkey under Erdogan as an example of a Muslim democracy that could be emulated by other countries in the region, such as Egypt.Speaking from an open-topped bus at the airport, his wife at his side, Erdogan acknowledged police might have used excessive force in crushing a small demonstration against a building project last Friday - the action that triggered nationwide protests against his 10-year-old rule.
"However, no-one has the right to attack us through this. May Allah preserve our fraternity and unity," said Erdogan, who denies accusations he seeks to replace a 90-year-old secular order with Islamic rule. "The secret to our success is not tension and polarisation.""The police are doing their duty. CLEAR CHALLENGE
He gave no indication of any immediate plans to remove the makeshift protest camps that have appeared on Taksim Square and a park in the capital, Ankara. But the gatherings mark a clear challenge to a leader whose authority is built on three successive election victories.Erdogan has pressed many democratic reforms, taming a military that had toppled four governments in four decades, starting entry talks with the European Union, reining in police rights abuses and forging peace talks with Kurdish rebels to end a three-decades-old war that has cost 40,000 lives.Per capita income has tripled in nominal terms and business boomed at home and beyond Turkish frontiers.But in recent years critics say his style, always forceful and emotional, has become authoritarian. Media have come under pressure, and arrests of military and other figures over alleged coup plots as well as moves such as alcohol sale restrictions have unsettled especially secular middle classes sensitive to any encroachment of religion on their daily lives.Sources close to the AK Party Erdogan founded in 2001, and which only a year later crushed traditional secular parties at elections, suggest a sense of siege within the leadership, with influential if disparate forces keen to remove Erdogan the man irrespective of policies or mandate.Erdogan has made clear he has no intention of stepping aside, pointing to 50 percent of the vote at the last election.The key word among Erdogan supporters, on Twitter and on street posters is "Yedirmeyiz" - we will not sacrifice him. HOSTILE FORCES
Erdogan's chief adviser Yalcin Akdogan saw a concurrence of domestic and foreign forces who wanted to see Erdogan humbled."In this consortium there are people who want to teach him a lesson and those who want to destroy him," he wrote in the Star newspaper.Akdogan, harking back to Ottoman times perhaps when European business enjoyed privileged status, suggested the West did not welcome a Turkish leader with 'backbone'. Erdogan, in a similar vein, set his sights also on financial institutions."The interest rate lobby think they can threaten us by entering into speculations in the stock exchange," he said. "They should know we won't let them abuse the nation's wealth."Supporters of Erdogan, who enjoys strong support in Turkey's conservative heartland, chanted "Tayyip" and "Don't Test our Patience", waving the Turkish flag - a white crescent moon and star on a red background - and the AKP banner, the image of a light bulb."Some say the prime minister is the prime minister of 50 percent," Erdogan declared to the crowd, in a speech broadcast live on several Turkish television stations. "We have always said that we are servant of the 76 million."
He was due to meet a senior EU official later.Erdogan has no clear rivals inside the AKP or outside where the opposition, both on the streets and in parliament, is fragmented. But in his party there are those who counsel more measured public comments than those ventured by Erdogan, who has tended to apply blanket condemnation to the protesters, branding them looters or associating them with terrorists.Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc apologised for the police violence this week, after Erdogan had left for North Africa.
A protest that began with activists resisting a plan to develop Taksim has ballooned. Among the demonstrators now are nationalists, socialists, students, unionists, radical leftists and middle class professionals, many of whom may have benefited from a booming economy but remain sceptical of Erdogan.
"We were not expecting him to welcome us but we're getting more and more impatient now. People are angry with his speech," said Ozlem Arkun, 27, handing out cake at an impromptu cafe on Taksim Square.

Tropical Storm Andrea zipping up the East Coast

(AP) — After bringing rains, heavy winds and even tornadoes to parts of Florida, Tropical Storm Andrea moved quickly across south Georgia and was speeding through the Carolinas on Friday morning, promising sloppy commutes and waterlogged vacation getaways through the beginning of the weekend.The first named storm of the Atlantic season lost some intensity after making landfall Thursday in Florida's Big Bend and its winds were down to 45 mph (75 kph) Friday.Ben Nelson, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Jacksonville, Fla., said Andrea (pronounced AN'-dree-ah) was "moving at a pretty brisk pace" and could lose its tropical characteristics Friday.During the morning rush hour in Charleston, S.C., there was little evidence the center of the storm was passing to the northwest beyond a few downed tree branches, gusty winds and some puddles in the street. The sun occasionally peeked through.Derrec Becker with the South Carolina Emergency Management Division said the storm was moving northeast at nearly 30 mph. Across the state, he said, Andrea has brought nothing more than a severe thunderstorm. No injuries were reported and there had been no reports of significant damage.The storm was expected to move into North Carolina by midday.The National Weather Service issued flood watches across much of both states, was well as tornado and flash flood watches in several counties.Thousands of power outages were also reported.Tropical storm warnings remained in effect for the East Coast from Savannah, Ga., to Cape Charles Light in Virginia, the Pamlico and Albemarle sounds and the lower Chesapeake Bay south of New Point Comfort. A tropical storm warning means tropical storm conditions are expected somewhere inside the warning area within a day and a half.As of 8 a.m. EDT Friday, Andrea was centered about 35 miles (60 kilometers) north-northwest of Charleston with little change in strength expected.
Rains and winds from the storm were forecast to sweep northward along the Southeastern U.S. coast Friday.Florida Gov. Windows were smashed and a neighbor's shed had crashed into her bedroom.
"It's all destroyed," she told The Palm Beach Post. "This is unbelievable. I don't know what we're going to do."Her 19-year-old son, Christian, was sleeping when he heard a loud noise."It was really scary," said the teen, who wasn't hurt. "It sounded like something exploded. Drag queens in sequins and platform heels waved to the crowd from floats as scantily-clad men bopped and bounced to the music.Tel Aviv has become a top destination for the gay community. Tourists from Brazil, England, Russia and elsewhere partied in the Tel Aviv parade alongside Israelis on Friday."We love Israel. We have come four times now. The people are so nice and open minded and so lovely to us," said a tourist from Germany who gave his name as Klaus, dressed in floppy orange hat with matching high heels. "There is a lot of energy here," Klaus said. Marching with his husband, Gerhard, he noted the warm weather and the fact that Tel Aviv has a beach as attractions.
Tel Aviv is one of the few places in the Middle East where gays feel free to walk hand-in-hand and kiss in public. The municipality spends some 2 million shekels (550,000 dollars) annually on the local community and on attracting gay travelers, Tel Aviv mayor Ron Huldai told Israeli Army Radio.The first gay couple to wed in France, Vincent Autin and Bruno Boileau, who tied the knot last week in a politically charged ceremony, are now honeymooning in Tel Aviv.Tel Aviv's openness stands in contrast to Jerusalem, just a short drive away, dominated by strictly Orthodox Jews and with a much smaller gay scene. In 2005, an ultra-Orthodox protester there stabbed three marchers at a gay pride parade.Despite its more open reputation, Tel Aviv has also experienced violence.The parade came just after police announced they had arrested four suspects in connection with the killing of two people at a gay youth center in Tel Aviv four years ago, what was then seen as the most homophobic attack in Israel's history. A beach party was set for post-march revelry.Tel Aviv has led the rest of Israel to become progressively more accepting of gays, granting them some rights while the country lags in other spheres.Officially, there is no gay marriage in Israel, primarily because there is no civil marriage of any kind. All weddings must be conducted through the Jewish rabbinate, which considers homosexuality a sin and a violation of Jewish law. But the state recognizes same-sex couples who marry abroad.Gay adoption is officially illegal, but couples can get around the law by using surrogacy or adopting abroad. The partner of a parent can adopt the child of his or her partner. Gays have served openly in Israel's military for decades.Community leaders say Israel still has far to go in promoting equality. The U.S. Administration under President Barack Obama is on defense after media revelations of large-scale surveillance programs that tapped into ordinary U.S. citizens' use of telephones and the internet.The director of national intelligence confirmed Thursday night that the federal government has been secretly collecting information on foreigners overseas for nearly six years from the nation’s largest Internet companies like Google, Facebook and, most recently, Apple.Officials told the New York Times that the data was gathered as part of a program code-named Prism, which is authorized under a foreign intelligence law that was recently renewed by Congress, and that the program searches for national security threats.Government officials also acknowledged a separate seven-year effort to sweep up records of telephone calls inside the United States.Civil liberties advocates, libertarian conservatives and other critics, most notably some British newspapers, said the disclosures prove that the U.S. is turning into a “surveillance state.”The Internet surveillance program collects data from online providers including e-mail, chat services, videos, photos, stored data, file transfers, video conferencing and log-ins, according to classified documents obtained and posted by the Washington Post and the Guardian on Thursday afternoon.The law that underlies the program “cannot be used to intentionally target any U.S. citizen, any other U.S. person, or anyone located within the United States,” James Clapper, the director of national intelligence, said in a statement.“Information collected under this program is among the most important and valuable intelligence information we collect, and is used to protect our nation from a wide variety of threats.”Critics see the revelations as confirming suspicions that civil liberties have eroded significantly since the 9/11 attacks, and are eroding even more rapidly under Obama than under his predecessor.“This is a truly stunning revelation,” Elizabeth Goitein, co-director of the Liberty and National Security Program at the Brennan Center for Justice, told the Washington Post. “This suggests that the government has been compiling a comprehensive record of Americans’ associations and possibly even their whereabouts.”Writing in the British Guardian, Jonathan Turley said the surveillance was “conducted under an order from our controversial secret court, the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (Fisa), and demanded by the Justice Department and the FBI.”"Now we can see the inevitable consequence of this secret court and the administration's surveillance program,” Turley explained. “The administration is creating a massive databank for all calls, including calls within the United States.
