Nanotoxicity of Graphene and Graphene Oxide-Publication Date:January 6, 2014

Graphene and its derivatives are promising candidates for important biomedical applications because of their versatility. The prospective use of graphene-based materials in a biological context requires a detailed comprehension of the toxicity of these materials. Moreover, due to the expanding applications of nanotechnology, human and environmental exposures to graphene-based nanomaterials are likely to increase in the future. Because of the potential risk factors associated with the manufacture and use of graphene-related materials, the number of nanotoxicological studies of these compounds has been increasing rapidly in the past decade. These studies have researched the effects of the nanostructural/biological interactions on different organizational levels of the living system, from biomolecules to animals. This review discusses recent results based on in vitro and in vivo cytotoxicity and genotoxicity studies of graphene-related materials and critically examines the methodologies employed to evaluate ther toxicities. The environmental impact from the manipulation and application of graphene materials is also reported and discussed. Finally, this review presents mechanistic aspects of graphene toxicity in biological systems. More detailed studies aiming to investigate the toxicity of graphene-based materials and to properly associate the biological phenomenon with their chemical, structural, and morphological variations that result from several synthetic and processing possibilities are needed. Knowledge about graphene-based materials could ensure the safe application of this versatile material. Consequently, the focus of this review is to provide a source of inspiration for new nanotoxicological approaches for graphene-based materials.

What is graphene oxide? Surface Science Blog

Graphene oxide (GO) is the oxidized form of graphene. It is a single-atomic-layered material that is formed by the oxidation of graphite which is cheap and readily available. Graphene oxide is easy to process since it is dispersible in water and other solvents. Due to the oxygen in its lattice graphene oxide is not conductive, but it can be reduced to graphene by chemical methods. One of the main advantages of graphene oxide is that it is dispersible to water. This makes it possible to use solution-based processes. The primary method for fabrication of graphene films is chemical vapor deposition (CVD). However, this method requires high-temperatures and relatively long deposition times making it expensive. It also limits the deposition to substrates that can tolerate high temperatures making deposition on top of polymers difficult.Graphene oxide can be reduced to graphene-Another benefit of graphene oxide is that it can be reduced to graphene by using chemical, thermal or electrochemical methods. The material produced is called reduced graphene oxide (rGO). The rGO is one of the most obvious solutions to be used when large quantities of graphene are needed for industrial applications such as energy storage. The reduction process is thus vital as it has a large impact on the quality of the rGO produced.Reducing GO by using chemical reduction is very scalable but unfortunately, the quality of the produced rGO is typically poor. Thermally reducing GO requires temperatures as high 1000 °C or more which damages the structure of the graphene platelets. However, the overall quality of the produced rGO is quite good. Electrochemical methods have been shown to produce very high-quality rGO, almost identical to pristine graphene. However, the method still suffers from scalability issues.Once reduced graphene oxide has been produced, there are numerous ways that can be used to functionalize it. This will enhance the properties of the rGO film to be used in various applications.

A Canadian judge has frozen access to donations for the trucker convoy protest-February 10, 20229:49 PM ET-Sharon Pruitt-Young

The escalating protests against COVID-19 vaccine mandates in Canada block the roadway at the Ambassador Bridge border crossing in Windsor, Ontario.Protesters blocking roads along the Canadian border may have just hit another roadblock in accessing funds from supporters. The Ontario Superior Court of Justice issued an order halting access to funds collected via the GiveSendGo website, Canadian outlet Global News reports. Protesters had raised millions via "Freedom Convoy 2022" and "Adopt-a-Trucker" campaigns on the site, but government officials in Ontario asked the court to stop organizers from accessing and doling out those funds, a request that was granted Thursday, Ivana Yelich, a spokeswoman for the office of the Premier of Ontario, told the outlet.Protesters were initially able to use GoFundMe to garner financial support and raised around $7.8 million before GoFundMe put a stop to the fundraiser for violating its terms of service and opted to refund all donors. In a statement explaining its decision, the company said that while it initially supported what it believed was a peaceful protest, evidence from authorities showed that the "Freedom Convoy" had morphed into an "occupation" involving unlawful activities.Following GoFundMe's move, protesters then moved on to GiveSendGo, a Christian fundraising website. That site has faced some scrutiny following reports of a brief data leak.By subscribing, you agree to NPR's terms of use and privacy policy. The demonstration, which has spread to several border crossings with the U.S., has caused ongoing traffic disruptions and has worsened supply chain strains and caused shutdowns and decreased productivity in the auto industry.Officials in Canada and abroad have called for an end to what authorities have deemed an "occupation." Ontario Premier Doug Ford confirmed via Twitter Wednesday evening that he and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will continue to support police in their efforts to manage the situation, while President Biden has urged the Canadian government to use federal force to end the demonstration, The Associated Press reported. In the meantime, law enforcement agencies in France and Belgium have taken steps to prevent similar situations from unfolding in their countries by banning road blockades, according to the AP. In the U.S., the Department of Homeland Security said it has received reports that similar demonstrations could potentially affect Super Bowl Sunday as well as the State of the Union address next month.

Is Trudeau losing his fight against truckers?-By Jessica Murphy-FEB 11, 2022

As anti-vaccine mandate protests drag on in Ottawa and spread to border crossings across the country, threatening trade, the Canadian prime minister is facing growing pressure to step in.Before they had reached the national capital, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau referred to the convoy of truckers and their like-minded supporters as a "small fringe minority".Two weeks later, he's facing a spiralling crisis.Protesters are blocking or slowing traffic at vital border crossings - including the Ambassador Bridge linking Michigan to Ontario, where at least a quarter of annual trade between the two countries comes through, valued in the hundreds of millions of dollars.Within days, two of the world's biggest carmakers, Ford and Toyota, said plants had been forced to shut because car parts were being held up at two border points.US governors and the White House are raising alarm over the economic impact, and on Friday evening a judge granted a court order to clear the bridge. In Ottawa, the "Freedom Convoy'' that has gridlocked streets near parliament with some 500 trucks is entering its third week. Called a "siege" by overwhelmed police, the protesters, with support and funds flowing from the US and elsewhere, show no signs they plan to pack up and go home. The city is under a state of emergency. The province of Ontario declared one on Friday, making it illegal to block crucial infrastructure, with the provincial premier accusing protesters of "trying to force a political agenda through disruption, intimidation and chaos".And Mr Trudeau is facing questions about whether he's doing enough to de-escalate the situation and bring it to an end."Canadians have been missing national leadership during this crisis," NDP leader Jagmeet Singh said on Thursday, accusing Mr Trudeau of seeking "excuses not to act".Since the protests began, the prime minister has kept the federal government at arm's length, promising cities and provinces struggling to deal with protests and blockade any federal help they requested. His response seems to be both "a real desire not to validate the technique" used by the protesters and to respect the jurisdictional powers of provincial governments and police forces, said Stewart Prest, a political scientist at Simon Fraser University. But Mr Prest added that leadership has "been slow, late in coming, and I think it's fair to say underwhelming given the gravity of the situation"."There's clearly a need for some form of federal involvement to, at a minimum, more effectively co-ordinate the response that is already happening," he said. The protests began in reaction to a vaccine mandate brought in last month by Mr Trudeau's Liberals requiring all Canadian truckers to be vaccinated or to quarantine on their return from the US.The vast majority of Canadian truckers are jabbed, and trucking associations have distanced themselves from the protests, noting most drivers are still working. But the protests have snowballed into a wider movement pushing for an end to all Covid restrictions and in general opposition to Mr Trudeau's government.Mr Prest described the protests "as almost this primal scream of rage, frustration" from a segment of the population after two years of pandemic restrictions. They "represent the most extreme example of the general frustration that exists" and have attracted "a wide number of other groups, mostly from the fringe of Canadian society that are anti-vaccine and anti-science", said Andrew McDougall, an assistant professor of political science at the University of Toronto.Mr Trudeau has refused to meet with the protesters, who he has said hold "unacceptable views"."I think there's a concern he doesn't want to signal he's negotiating with the group that shut down Ottawa," said Mr McDougall, adding that the prime minister "is a political target for the protesters and he's the one who's the focus of a lot of the rage".A favourite sign seen at the protests carry a simple message: an expletive and Mr Trudeau's surname."It's not a crowd that's sympathetic to his message," said Mr McDougall. How do you remove a 30-tonne truck? So what do Canadians think of the protests? Opinion polls suggest a minority of Canadians - somewhere between 30% and 40% - agree with their message.A recent Ipsos poll indicated that 46% of Canadians "may not agree with everything the people who have taken part in the truck protests in Ottawa have said, but their frustration is legitimate and worthy of our sympathy".This is where Mr Trudeau hasn't been in step with many Canadians, whose attitudes towards the pandemic have shifted amid the latest Omicron wave and high vaccination rates, said Mr Prest.Canadians looking for a roadmap out of the pandemic haven't heard one from the government, he said.Mr Trudeau now appears to have heard some of the criticism, and on Friday sought to reassure Canadians he was looking towards the reopening and considering lifting some federally placed measures. It comes as a number of provinces recently announced they will begin to roll back pandemic restrictions in their jurisdictions, like ones requiring vaccines for gyms and restaurants. The prime minister has also faced a rare rebuke from within his own party for his handling of this pandemic message, with Liberal MP Joel Lightbound accusing him this week of "politicising" the Covid response."It's becoming harder and harder to know when public health stops and where politics begins," he said. "It's time to stop dividing Canadians and pitting one part of the population against another."But on Friday, Mt Trudeau brushed off a question from reporters on whether he regretted his hard tone towards the demonstrators. For Mr McDougall, it's still too early to take any lessons from the protest because first "we're going to have to find out how this ends".line-Analysis box by Anthony Zurcher, North America reporter-The trucker demonstrations may be a political phenomenon that started in Canada, but it has US roots - and could become a headache for Joe Biden and US politicians before too long.It isn't hard to see the Donald Trump influence on the scores of truckers in the "Freedom Convoy" - waving flags and hoisting placards espousing liberty and decrying big government. Pandemic fatigue, which has played a role in the Canadian anti-vaccination protests, is an American phenomenon as well - and the political environment in the US could be equally nurturing of such demonstrations.Prominent American Republicans and conservative pundits, many of whom have celebrated the Canadian protests, have already made the current US mandates on masking and vaccinations an issue as mid-term elections approach in November - even if the anti-vaccine mandate movement is hardly the sole domain of the right. There are already reports of plans in the US to organise similar truck protests, perhaps targeting the Super Bowl on Sunday or Mr Biden's State of the Union address in March. While there's no chokepoint quite so obvious as the border crossings are for Canada, which heavily depends on US trade, anything that could disrupt the US supply chain has the potential to cause political pain for Biden.

Ontario declares a state of emergency to end 'siege' in Ottawa and Windsor-Katherine DeClerq-CTV News Toronto Multi-Platform Writer-Updated Friday, February 11, 2022 5:30PM EST

Ontario Premier Doug Ford has declared a state of emergency in an effort to put an end to the “siege” in Ottawa and Windsor as the truck convoy protests continue to disrupt traffic and prevent the transport of goods across the Canadian border.Ford made the announcement Friday at Queen’s Park, saying he will convene cabinet and “use legal authorities to urgently enact orders” that will protect international border crossings, as well as the 400-series highways, airports, bridges, ports and railways in the province.Fines for non-compliances will be severe, the premier said, with a maximum penalty of $100,000 and up to a year imprisonment. The premier said the orders will “make crystal clear it is illegal and punishable to block and impede the movement of goods, people and services along critical infrastructure.”The province will also be providing “additional authority” to take away the personal and commercial licenses of those who do not comply“While these emergency orders will be temporary, we have every intention to bring new legislation forward that will make these measures permanent in law. We are taking the steps necessary to support our police as they do what it takes to restore law and order,” Ford said at the news conference. The protests in Ottawa have surpassed the two-week mark, forcing the mayor to declare its own state of emergency last weekend, while the blockade in Windsor at the Ambassador Bridge has been ongoing since Monday. The demonstrators say they are against vaccine mandates and other COVID-19 measures currently in place.Speaking on Friday, the premier made it clear the new measures will not impede on anyone’s right to protest—but also said the protests in Ottawa and Windsor have gone on too long and are now impacting the economy of the province.“We are now two weeks into the siege of the City of Ottawa. I call it a siege because that is what it is. It’s an illegal occupation,” Ford said. “This is no longer a protest. With a protest, you peacefully make your point and you go back home, and I know that the vast majority of people did that. They came, they peacefully demonstrated, they made their point and they left.” And I want to say to those people, you have been heard, Canada has heard you.”“My message to those still in Ottawa, to those at our border crossings, please go home.”Ford noted that the government does not direct police, but rather makes laws for the province. The initial state of emergency declaration will last for 42 hours, the solicitor general later clarified, and cabinet will meet on Saturday to further amend it if need be.The premier also confirmed Thursday the province successfully applied for a court order to freeze the distribution of donations raised through online fundraising for the convoy, who are protesting vaccine mandates and other COVID-19 measures. An application is also set to be heard by the Ontario Superior Court for an injunction that would prevent protesters from blocking the Ambassador Bridge.
