Canada says to block G20 deal on global bank tax

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown earlier this month said he expected the G20 to agree on some form of global bank levy this year.In response, the Canadian official said the Conservative government in Ottawa wanted to make clear there was no consensus within the Group of 20 industrialized and emerging powers on such a proposal.We're not opposed to countries imposing taxes or a levy domestically, we will not allow it to be imposed on Canada, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.Our position is clear. We need better regulations not new taxes to ensure we don't repeat the global financial crisis, he said.Finance ministers from the G7 wealthy nations agreed Feb 6 to take a closer look at various proposals for making banks cover the cost of bailouts, past and future.The details are sketchy and ideas range from a tax on bank's balance sheets to a so-called Tobin tax on financial transactions.Canada appeared to be closed to the idea of any tax imposed globally without discrimination, arguing that its domestic banks did not require bailouts thanks to prudent regulations.We will oppose the creation of a new global tax or any tax on financial services and transactions, the official said.Canada will push for strengthening financial regulations and better coordination between financial regulators.

Snow damage to Md. zoo at $1.5 million; owl loose

BALTIMORE – An owl is on the loose and the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore will have to delay its season opening because of damage from two heavy snowstorms.Zoo officials say they have at least $1.5 million in losses from historic storms across the Mid-Atlantic.An aviary for Maryland birds was a total loss, the African aviary was heavily damaged and more than 60 trees or large limbs fell.A long-eared owl from the damaged aviary is still on the loose.The zoo was scheduled to reopen March 1 after its winter break. LONDON – Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou told other European leaders Friday that Greece intended to solve its debt crisis on its own, as the government replaced the head of its debt management agency ahead of key moves to refinance its massive deficit.The news that Petros Christodoulou, former head of asset management at the National Bank of Greece, will take over from Spyros Papanicolaou comes as financial markets continue to fret about the Greek government's ability to pay off its debt. Those worries have undermined confidence in the 16-country euro currency.The Finance Ministry did not give a reason for the appointment in its announcement late Thursday.
Greece has taken a hammering in markets in recent months, after the new government sharply revised the budget deficit shortly after the elections to 12.7 percent of gross domestic product from a 3.7 percent forecast months earlier — sending Europe into a new phase of the financial crisis over mounting debts by Greece and several other euro-zone countries.Spreads of Greek government bonds over the equivalent German benchmark bonds — a key indicator of the market's perception of a risk of default — have spiraled in recent weeks, and stood at 326 basis points on Friday afternoon. Papandreou reiterated in London that Greece's troubles were our responsibility and that Greece was not seeking a bailout. But he said Athens' woes affected all and that the country needed the support of its partners in the EU.
Higher interest rates for us means higher interest rates for Europe....What we are simply saying is we'd like to borrow on the same terms as other countries in the European Union and the eurozone,Papandreou said at a conference of socialist leaders.
The Prime Minister would not be drawn onto whether Greece was preparing a multibillion euro bond issue next week as around euro20 billion of its debt needs to be refinanced in April and May. There is mounting speculation in the markets that Greece will begin looking to tap investors before the end of February to take advantage of improved market conditions — last month the spread over German bonds stood at around 400 basis points.Papandreou repeated his view that the country was not looking for a bailout from its partners in the 16-country eurozone but simply saying we have a program and we need support for this program. Papandreou's government has pledged to cut its budget deficit by four percentage points in this year alone.Papandreou also met with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Spain's premier Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, as well as Foreign Secretary David Miliband — in addition to being Prime Minister, Papandreou also holds the foreign affairs brief.

Athens has until March 16 to report back to the EU on its progress. European Commission spokeswoman Amelia Torres said Rehn will visit Greece before the middle of March.She did not elaborate, but the timing of the visit seemed designed to step up the pressure on Athens. NEW YORK – Stocks turned higher Friday after investors found good news in the Federal Reserve's decision to begin dismantling emergency lending measures for banks.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose for the fourth straight day.Stocks initially fell in response to the Fed's announcement late Thursday that it is raising the rate it charges banks for emergency loans, known as the discount rate. But the market turned higher in late morning trading as investors saw the Fed's move as a vote of confidence that the financial system was recovering and that banks didn't need as much support as they used to.The Fed certainly isn't exiting the easy money policy door yet, said Burt White, chief investment officer at LPL Financial.They have their coats and boots on.The central bank didn't change its more widely used federal funds rate, which is a benchmark for short-term interest rates.Jay Leupp, president of Grubb & Ellis AGA mutual funds, said it was inevitable that the Fed would raise the discount rate. However the timing and size of future rate hikes for both the discount rate and the federal funds rate are still up in the air, he said.It's a warning sign, but don't expect more to happen soon,Leupp said.In afternoon trading, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 17.46, or 0.2 percent, to 10,410.36. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 3.38, or 0.3 percent, at 1,110.13, while the Nasdaq composite index rose 4.46, or 0.2 percent, to 2,246.17.

ATHENS, Greece – Greek drivers lined up for gas at the few stations still open Friday as a customs strike against government austerity measures left many pumps running dry.The fuel shortage was the first serious consequence of growing labor protests against the Socialist government's emergency spending cuts program, aimed at easing the debt crisis in Greece and shoring up market confidence.Customs workers have extended their strike against salary freezes and bonus cuts through next Wednesday, when unions across Greece will hold a general strike that is set to bring the country to a standstill.European finance ministers have told Athens it must demonstrate signs of fiscal improvement by March 16 or it will be ordered to impose even tougher budget cuts. Greece has promised to slash its deficit from an estimated 12.7 percent of gross domestic product to 8.7 percent this year.Finance Ministry officials say they are under EU pressure to ax the public servants' so-called 14th salary.Greek workers get their annual salary divided into 14 payments, with two of them given as holiday bonuses, in a measure originally designed to alleviate those with low incomes.We would consider cutting the 14th (salary) to be an act of war, said Yiannis Papagopoulos, leader of Greece's trade union umbrella group, the GSEE.
The measures must be socially just. And this is something that we have not seen so far. They are generally aimed at wage-earners and pensioners, while business remains immune. It is finally time for those who for so many years gathered riches to pay up, invest, and help deal with the major problem at this time, which is unemployment.
The customs walkout has hampered imports and exports, but the supply of fuel has been the most affected. Gas stations around greater Athens were rationing fuel while stocks lasted. Traffic policemen were posted at some gas stations in Athens as cars queued for hundreds of meters (yards).We're out of regular unleaded, and now we're only selling diesel,said attendant Ioanna Antoniou at a gas station in the northern Athens suburb of Halandri.There were a lot of cars lined up here earlier while we still had some unleaded left.Antoniou said the gas station had rationed fuel to limit sales to euro20 ($27) per customer so they could serve more people.Taxis also held a 24-hour strike Friday, protesting parts of the austerity package that increased fuel tax and will force them to issue receipts. Taxi drivers chanting The measures mean unemployment staged a noisy protest in central Athens that choked traffic.These measures won't do anything, all they will do is throw us out of work, cab driver Anastasis Damianidis said.We can't become tax collectors — that's what they're trying to do. RIO DE JANEIRO – A Canadian sailing ship filled with high school and college students sank off the coast of Brazil in strong winds, but officials said all 64 people aboard were rescued Friday after about 16 hours in rafts tossed by rough seas.
A distress signal was picked up from the three-masted SV Concordia about 5 p.m. (2 p.m. EST; 1900 GMT) Thursday, Brazil's Navy said in a statement and an Air Force plane later spotted life rafts floating in the ocean about 300 miles (500 kilometers) off the coast of Rio de Janeiro.Forty-eight students — in grades 11, 12 and university freshmen — were aboard the vessel, said Kate Knight, head of West Island College International of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, which operates the Class Afloat program.Edgardo Ybranez, captain of the Philippine flagged Hokuetsu Delight cargo ship, told The Associated Press via satellite phone that his ship rescued 44 of the victims in rough, dangerous seas. The remaining people were picked up by another ship.Ybranez said the Concordia's doctor had suffered an injury before the rescue,but he is OK now.He gave no more details.All the rest were unhurt, Ybranez said: You can tell their parents that everything is OK; everybody aboard my ship is fine.The captain declined to put one of the survivors on the telephone. They are all downstairs sleeping because they are exhausted, so I don't want to call any of them up,he said before cutting off the call to communicate with his employers.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti – Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive says the Haitian government will appropriate privately held land to build temporary camps for earthquake victims.Bellerive told The Associated Press in an interview that the government owns some land but not enough, meaning he has no choice but to take over private terrain.He would not say how much terrain will be taken over.Haitian law provides for such takeovers as long as they are in the public interest and the owners are fairly compensated, said lawyer Benissoit Jude Detournel, who handles property disputes.There has to be a just and equitable indemnity, taking into account the market value of the property, Detournel said. He added that setting a price is difficult now in the quake's aftermath.The government has appropriated land in the past without conflict — to build a wider road on the western outskirts of Port-au-Prince four years ago, to protect underground water aquifers 14 years ago and to construct government buildings in downtown Port-au-Prince in the 1970s, according to Jean-Andre Victor, an agronomist who worked on a failed government attempt to survey land ownership in 2003.
Now, international aid groups say hundreds of hectares (acres) are needed to get quake victims out of overcrowded makeshift camps in public parks and lots in Port-au-Prince. Officials say 1.2 million Haitians were left homeless by the Jan. 12 quake, about half of them in the capital.Camps have sprung up on every bit of available land in Port-au-Prince — school and university grounds, public gardens, a golf course, the central Champ de Mars plaza or simply on sidewalks.One reason for the quake's devastating human and economic toll is that nearly a third of Haiti's nearly 10 million people were concentrated in the already overcrowded capital, as were the government and almost all industry.Relief workers are working against the clock to find temporary settlements for the homeless before the spring rainy season.Early sporadic downpours already are adding to the misery of people living in makeshift shelters of bed sheets propped up by poles. Iran navy launches domestically made destroyer

TEHRAN (AFP) – Iran's navy on Friday has launched in the Gulf its first domestically made destroyer in a ceremony attend by the supreme leader and the commander-in-chief Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the media reported.Iran's navy on Friday took the delivery of the first indigenously designed and developed guided missile destroyer Jamaran in the Persian Gulf,Iran's English-language Press TV reported.The vessel has a displacement of around 14,000 tonnes and is equipped with modern radars and electronic warfare capabilities, the report said.Jamaran, a multi-mission destroyer, can carry 120-140 personnel on board and is armed with a variety of anti-ship and surface-to-air missiles with a top speed of up to 30 knots and has a helipad,the report added.The vessel has also been equipped with torpedoes and modern naval cannons.State television also showed footage of the vessel and the ceremony at which it was launched by Khamenei flanked by the top Iranian military commanders.Much of Iran's naval equipment dates from before the 1979 Islamic revolution and is US made. Among ElBaradei's conditions for running are judicial supervision of the election carried out under the watchful eye of United Nations monitors. He also wants state media to give equal space to the platforms of all candidates. The issue is not ElBaradei as president but amending the constitution to ensure that we have free elections with serious challengers, not only with the choice of either Mubarak or his son Gamal,Aswany said. JERUSALEM – Israel's government has launched a campaign aiming to boost the country's image abroad even as it finds itself in the middle of an international uproar over the suspected role of Israeli spies in the assassination of a Hamas operative.Through a new Web site, TV commercials and pamphlets handed to passengers boarding planes, the campaign launched this week tries to get Israelis to promote their country when traveling.But it offers a puzzling take on what foreign attitudes toward the country really are, and appears to reflect a view that poor public relations, and not policies, lie at the root of Israel's image problem.Rather than focusing on the passions surrounding the Israeli-Arab conflict, the campaign suggests — with a touch of humor — that people abroad believe that camels are a leading form of transportation in Israel, or that Israelis like to barbecue outside because they have no gas or electricity at home.

Canada says to block G20 deal on global bank tax

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown earlier this month said he expected the G20 to agree on some form of global bank levy this year.In response, the Canadian official said the Conservative government in Ottawa wanted to make clear there was no consensus within the Group of 20 industrialized and emerging powers on such a proposal.We're not opposed to countries imposing taxes or a levy domestically, we will not allow it to be imposed on Canada, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.Our position is clear. We need better regulations not new taxes to ensure we don't repeat the global financial crisis, he said.Finance ministers from the G7 wealthy nations agreed Feb 6 to take a closer look at various proposals for making banks cover the cost of bailouts, past and future.The details are sketchy and ideas range from a tax on bank's balance sheets to a so-called Tobin tax on financial transactions.Canada appeared to be closed to the idea of any tax imposed globally without discrimination, arguing that its domestic banks did not require bailouts thanks to prudent regulations.We will oppose the creation of a new global tax or any tax on financial services and transactions, the official said.Canada will push for strengthening financial regulations and better coordination between financial regulators.

BALTIMORE – An owl is on the loose and the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore will have to delay its season opening because of damage from two heavy snowstorms.Zoo officials say they have at least $1.5 million in losses from historic storms across the Mid-Atlantic.An aviary for Maryland birds was a total loss, the African aviary was heavily damaged and more than 60 trees or large limbs fell.A long-eared owl from the damaged aviary is still on the loose.The zoo was scheduled to reopen March 1 after its winter break. NEW YORK – Stocks turned higher Friday after investors found good news in the Federal Reserve's decision to begin dismantling emergency lending measures for banks.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose for the fourth straight day.Stocks initially fell in response to the Fed's announcement late Thursday that it is raising the rate it charges banks for emergency loans, known as the discount rate. But the market turned higher in late morning trading as investors saw the Fed's move as a vote of confidence that the financial system was recovering and that banks didn't need as much support as they used to.The Fed certainly isn't exiting the easy money policy door yet, said Burt White, chief investment officer at LPL Financial.They have their coats and boots on.The central bank didn't change its more widely used federal funds rate, which is a benchmark for short-term interest rates.Jay Leupp, president of Grubb & Ellis AGA mutual funds, said it was inevitable that the Fed would raise the discount rate. However the timing and size of future rate hikes for both the discount rate and the federal funds rate are still up in the air, he said.It's a warning sign, but don't expect more to happen soon,Leupp said.In afternoon trading, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 17.46, or 0.2 percent, to 10,410.36. Greece has promised to slash its deficit from an estimated 12.7 percent of gross domestic product to 8.7 percent this year.Finance Ministry officials say they are under EU pressure to ax the public servants' so-called 14th salary.Greek workers get their annual salary divided into 14 payments, with two of them given as holiday bonuses, in a measure originally designed to alleviate those with low incomes.We would consider cutting the 14th (salary) to be an act of war, said Yiannis Papagopoulos, leader of Greece's trade union umbrella group, the GSEE.

RIO DE JANEIRO – A Canadian sailing ship filled with high school and college students sank off the coast of Brazil in strong winds, but officials said all 64 people aboard were rescued Friday after about 16 hours in rafts tossed by rough seas.
A distress signal was picked up from the three-masted SV Concordia about 5 p.m. (2 p.m. EST; 1900 GMT) Thursday, Brazil's Navy said in a statement and an Air Force plane later spotted life rafts floating in the ocean about 300 miles (500 kilometers) off the coast of Rio de Janeiro.Forty-eight students — in grades 11, 12 and university freshmen — were aboard the vessel, said Kate Knight, head of West Island College International of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, which operates the Class Afloat program.Edgardo Ybranez, captain of the Philippine flagged Hokuetsu Delight cargo ship, told The Associated Press via satellite phone that his ship rescued 44 of the victims in rough, dangerous seas. PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti – Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive says the Haitian government will appropriate privately held land to build temporary camps for earthquake victims.Bellerive told The Associated Press in an interview that the government owns some land but not enough, meaning he has no choice but to take over private terrain.He would not say how much terrain will be taken over.Haitian law provides for such takeovers as long as they are in the public interest and the owners are fairly compensated, said lawyer Benissoit Jude Detournel, who handles property disputes.There has to be a just and equitable indemnity, taking into account the market value of the property, Detournel said. He added that setting a price is difficult now in the quake's aftermath.The government has appropriated land in the past without conflict — to build a wider road on the western outskirts of Port-au-Prince four years ago, to protect underground water aquifers 14 years ago and to construct government buildings in downtown Port-au-Prince in the 1970s, according to Jean-Andre Victor, an agronomist who worked on a failed government attempt to survey land ownership in 2003.
Now, international aid groups say hundreds of hectares (acres) are needed to get quake victims out of overcrowded makeshift camps in public parks and lots in Port-au-Prince. MOSCOW (Reuters) – Russia said on Friday it was very alarmed by Iran's failure to cooperate with the IAEA, after the U.N. nuclear agency said it feared Tehran might be working to develop a nuclear-armed missile.Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei repeated Iran's insistence that suspicions about its nuclear program were baseless. But the U.S.-led campaign for more sanctions against Tehran appeared to be gaining ground.Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov indicated that Moscow's patience was wearing very thin.We are very alarmed and we cannot accept this, that Iran is refusing to cooperate with the IAEA, Lavrov told the Ekho Moskvy radio station in an interview.For about 20 years, the Iranian leadership carried out its clandestine nuclear program without reporting it to the IAEA, he said.I do not understand why there was such secrecy.The IAEA on Thursday made public its concerns over a classified analysis which concludes that Iran already has explosives expertise relevant to a workable nuclear weapon.Some questions remain on the table and Iran has so far not reacted to them but they are rather serious and we need to understand how several documents concerning military nuclear technology found their way to Iran,Lavrov said.

Iran navy launches domestically made destroyer

TEHRAN (AFP) – Iran's navy on Friday has launched in the Gulf its first domestically made destroyer in a ceremony attend by the supreme leader and the commander-in-chief Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the media reported.Iran's navy on Friday took the delivery of the first indigenously designed and developed guided missile destroyer Jamaran in the Persian Gulf,Iran's English-language Press TV reported.The vessel has a displacement of around 14,000 tonnes and is equipped with modern radars and electronic warfare capabilities, the report said.Jamaran, a multi-mission destroyer, can carry 120-140 personnel on board and is armed with a variety of anti-ship and surface-to-air missiles with a top speed of up to 30 knots and has a helipad,the report added.The vessel has also been equipped with torpedoes and modern naval cannons.State television also showed footage of the vessel and the ceremony at which it was launched by Khamenei flanked by the top Iranian military commanders.Much of Iran's naval equipment dates from before the 1979 Islamic revolution and is US made. The Vienna-based IAEA has been investigating for a number of years intelligence reports claiming Iran was involved in weapons research.In 2007, a US intelligence report said Iran halted such research in 2003, but Amano's report gives credence to the belief of some Western governments that the programme has covertly continued.

MOSCOW – A Russian official said Friday that U.S. plans for a revamped missile defense system in Romania are stalling talks on a new nuclear arms reduction treaty.
Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov told the Interfax news agency that Washington's plans in the most immediate sense are influencing Russian-U.S. negotiations on a replacement to a Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty that expired in 2009.Washington and Moscow said minor issues in the new treaty prevented a signing last year.Washington is in negotiations to station anti-ballistic missile interceptors in Romania, which Russia considers too close and a detriment to its own defense capability.Meanwhile, Bulgaria said Friday that it has not held talks with the U.S. about hosting part of a U.S. missile shield, despite an earlier indication that it planned such a meeting.U.S. Ambassador to Moscow John Beyrle said earlier this month that the U.S. has agreed to include treaty language sought by Russia that would acknowledge the link between defensive systems — such as the missile shield — with offensive systems.

CAIRO (Reuters) – Former U.N. nuclear chief Mohamed ElBaradei arrived at Cairo airport on Friday to an exuberant welcome from supporters who hope he will stir up Egyptian politics by running for president in 2011.Security men hustled away ElBaradei, tipped as a possible consensus candidate, as crowds surged forward, chanting Yes, to ElBaradei ... Justice and freedom to Egyptians.ElBaradei later reappeared in a Jeep to meet his supporters, numbering about a thousand, but had to drive past without stopping as the overenthusiastic crowd became unruly.His supporters, including members of the Kefaya and the Sixth of April Youth movements who oppose the government of President Hosni Mubarak, sang Egypt's national anthem and waved flags before ElBaradei landed several hours late.However, among the crowds were also people who said they did not belong to any group, including children as young as 10 and elderly Egyptians.

JERUSALEM – Israel's government has launched a campaign aiming to boost the country's image abroad even as it finds itself in the middle of an international uproar over the suspected role of Israeli spies in the assassination of a Hamas operative.Through a new Web site, TV commercials and pamphlets handed to passengers boarding planes, the campaign launched this week tries to get Israelis to promote their country when traveling.But it offers a puzzling take on what foreign attitudes toward the country really are, and appears to reflect a view that poor public relations, and not policies, lie at the root of Israel's image problem.Rather than focusing on the passions surrounding the Israeli-Arab conflict, the campaign suggests — with a touch of humor — that people abroad believe that camels are a leading form of transportation in Israel, or that Israelis like to barbecue outside because they have no gas or electricity at home.

A couple paragraphs later, Mr. Capehart is compares Stack to Timothy McVeigh.McVeigh was more than disgruntled. He was murderous. And the alienation he felt from his government in 1995 still affects more than we care to admit 15 years later.In fact, McVeigh was more than disgruntled. He was a government agent.
In 2007, McVeigh’s supposed co-conspirator, Terry Nichols, said McVeigh was under the control of Larry Potts of the FBI. Potts was the lead FBI agent at Ruby Ridge in 1992 and also was reportedly involved in the 51-day siege against the Branch Davidians in Waco, Texas in 1993, which resulted in the murder of 81 Branch Davidians.Nichols was never allowed to tell the whole story. He was gagged by then Attorney General John Ashcroft.Apparently before he had contacted me several years ago he had written to Attorney General Ashcroft, volunteering to tell everything about the bombing and the others involved,said Salt Lake City attorney Jesse Trentadue in 2007.Not only did no one from Attorney General Ashcroft’s office follow up with Nichols, they actually apparently issued an order barring him from all contact with the media – it was thereafter that he reached out to me and I was able to get in to see him to spend a day and half with him.I didn’t start out to solve the Oklahoma City bombing, I started out to find out who killed my brother and why, Jesse Trentadue told the Alex Jones Show in February, 2007.Trentadue’s brother was killed by the FBI, allegedly in a case of mistaken identity because his brother fit the profile of Richard Lee Guthrie, a member of a group called the Midwest Bank Robbery Gang that had been robbing banks to fund an attack on the federal government.
During the process of a lawsuit to get to the bottom of his brother’s murder, Trentadue received documents with names redacted that revealed the FBI’s OKC bombing informants were conducting armed robberies with Timothy McVeigh in order to fund the construction of the fertilizer bomb used in the attack on the federal building.One of the foreign informants was actually the explosives instructor who taught him how to make the bomb, Trentadue told Jones.In 2008, a video shot at Camp Grafton, North Dakota in 1993 — 18 months before the Oklahoma City bombing — surfaced showing Timothy McVeigh at a base specializing in demolitions training at a time when the FBI claimed he had no military affiliations.I think [the FBI] put together this harebrained idea at Elohim City [the Identity movement settlement in Oklahoma] to lure in all these militia groups under the pretense of teaching them how to rob banks in armored cars and attack the federal government and I think they planned to catch them in the act,said Trentadue.In addition to the FBI, the Southern Poverty Law Center had a role in creating the supposed terrorist threat centered at Elohim City.In 2003, the McCurtain Daily Gazette obtained an unclassified copy of a memorandum from the Director of the FBI revealing the SPLC’s role. Dated Jan. 4, 1996, the four-page cable was drafted and issued under the authority of FBI director Louis Freeh and is heavily redacted. However, despite the redaction, the memo exposes an informant operation being conducted at the time by Morris Dees and his notorious SPLC.If I told you what we were doing there, I would have to kill you, Dees later told reporters.As it turns out, McVeigh’s contact at Elohim City, Andreas Carl Strassmeir, who was allegedly connected to Aryan Republican Army, spent several years in the German army, including a stint as an intelligence officer. Peter Langan, the son of a retired U.S. Marine intelligence officer and said to be the leader of the Aryan Republican Army, was a government informant.In short, the supposed white supremacist movement at Elohim City was a government operation.
Less than 24 hours after the event in Austin, we still only have a sketchy idea of who Joe Stack was. People say the attack was completely contrary to his character. He was apolitical and not given to diatribes against the government.Is it possible he was set-up or possibly killed and put in a remote controlled plane that was directed into the Echelon office complex that houses IRS offices in Austin? Considering government complicity in numerous terrorist events — including the documented false flag event of September 11, 2001, and the obvious government operation in Oklahoma City — there is a distinct possibility.

Even before many of the details were confirmed surrounding yesterday’s tragic events in Austin, political operatives were callously exploiting the incident to advance their agenda in demonizing opponents of big government as terrorists who crash planes into buildings – unfortunately for them it has since emerged that Joe Stack was not a fringe extremist and he was not a member of any Tea Party organization.
Time Magazine instantly labeled Stack a domestic terrorist and openly implied links to the Tea Party by including a red link to an article about the Tea Party movement in the middle of their story about the Austin plane crash.A Washington Post editorial compared Stack with Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh and claimed, “His alienation is similar to that we’re hearing from the extreme elements of the Tea Party movement.This is of course a ludicrous aspersion to make. Polls show that at least 66 per cent of the entire country are angry with the federal government – that doesn’t mean that 200 million Americans are going to slam planes into buildings or indeed do anything violent. Tea Party protests have been noted for their peaceable nature – not so much of a window has been broken.New York Magazine jumped on the bandwagon, writing that Stack’s rhetoric could have been taken directly from a handwritten sign at a tea party rally,again overwhelmingly implying that anti-tax groups and small government advocates should be silenced because they are dangerous extremists.But by far the most belligerent reaction came from the Obamanoid blog websites, places like the Daily Kos which carried a post entitled, Teabagger terrorist attack on IRS building.After months of threats on the United States government, and government institutions, the Anti-Government forces known as the teabaggers have struck with their first 911 (sic) inspired terrorist attack,read the post.Of course, blaming random acts of violence on the liberty movement has become par for the course for those who wish to crush the free speech of their political adversaries. The University of Alabama-Huntsville murders were also blamed on the Tea Party movement until it turned out that the killer was an Obama-worshipper.
Unfortunately for those who like to exploit tragedies to further their own anti-free speech talking points, it turns out that Stack was not a teabagger,he was not a terrorist,and he was no Timothy McVeigh, he was a guy pushed to the edge, a sad figure in the mould of Michael Douglas’ character in the movie Falling Down.Austin Tea Party director Greg Holloway told Newsmax that Stack was not a member of the Austin Tea Party.His name does not appear on any of their contact lists, Holloway says. He does not know of any tea party leader who ever met him, writes David A. Patten.Asked his reaction to media reports linking the tea party movement to the tragedy, Holloway told Newsmax,I think it’s just the whole notion of a few people in politics, and I’ll include some of the media, that everything is about political process rather than about people. Here you’ve got a terrible tragedy involving so many people, and the first thought is: How do I use this to forward my own agenda and to try to attack someone elses? National tea party leader Everett Wilkinson also poured cold water on any links to Tea Party groups. As far as I know, Joseph Andrew Stack was not a member of the tea party movement,he said. The movement is not involved in protesting the IRS, but rather government spending. Our best wishes go out to the families and people involved.In addition, despite efforts to portray Stack as a political extremist, friends told CBS News that Stack talked politics like everyone but didn’t show any obsession.People who knew Stack said he was an easy going guy, a view backed by Infowars producer Rob Dew, who knew Stack from the Austin music scene and said he was a reserved, soft-spoken, well-dressed man. Dew expressed his shock that Stack could have been capable of flying a plane into a building.The picture that emerges from all this is not of a violent terrorist hell-bent on destruction to further his paranoid political agenda, as many in the media have attempted to portray, but a man driven to the edge of sanity as a result of his personal disputes with the IRS.
That didn’t stop controlled shill Glenn Beck comparing Stack to Osama Bin Laden and fitting him in to his fairytale delusion about terrorists being within Obama’s inner circle ready to kill the President. Beck even threw the people he claims to represent – Tea Party members – under the bus by saying Stack could be a radical constitutionalist,which is how a lot of Tea Party members would describe themselves.
To characterize yesterday’s tragedy as a deadly portend of the domestic terror waiting to be unleashed on U.S. cities by disgruntled Americans is not only completely irresponsible, it’s a revelatory insight into how desperate the establishment is – both fake left and right – to neutralize growing peaceful political opposition to the big government agenda across the country.

Georgian leader warns Europe against Russia warship deal

Georgia on Thursday (19 February) warned Europe against a proposed French sale of warships to Russia, as it would allow Moscow to invade any former Soviet republic within hours, echoing concerns raised by Baltic leaders that the deal is in breach of an EU code on arms trade.During a visit to London, President Mikheil Saakashvili said that the warship sale was very risky and would reward Russia's continued military presence in Georgia's breakaway provinces, in violation of a French-brokered ceasefire agreement after a brief war in 2008.Russia is negotiating a €500 million deal to buy at least one Mistral, an assault ship capable of carrying up to 16 helicopters and a 750-strong landing force. It has also expressed interest in three others. Mr Sarkozy has defended the sale, saying one cannot expect Russia to behave as a partner if we don't treat it as one.The deal would be a considerable boost for France's Saint-Nazaire shipyard, which builds Mistrals. The owner of the yard, South Korean-controlled shipbuilder STX Europe AS, announced last year it was cutting 351 jobs there due to a lack of orders.Mr Saakashvili said that if Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin gets tanks, ships, missiles - technology which he's also shopping for- then we are getting into a very, very risky zone.He added that Georgia has had an informal exchange of opinions with Paris about the warship deal but hadn't made an official protest.The Georgian leader also referred to remarks made last year by admiral Vladimir Vysotsky, the commander of Russia's navy, who said that if his country had such a ship in 2008, it could have won the war against Georgia in 40 minutes instead of 26 hours.

Czech court bans far-right Workers Party

The Czech Republic's top court has banned a far-right political group, the first time a party has been banned in the country since its separation from Slovakia in 1993.On Wednesday (17 February), the Supreme Administrative Court (NSS) outlawed the Workers' Party, finding that it deployed racist, xenophobic, homophobic and anti-Semitic language and was a threat to Czech democracy.The court agreed with the government, which originally filed the petition, noting its strong links to neo-Nazi and white supremacist groups.The party, which rejects the accusation that it is a neo-Nazi group itself, has said it will appeal.It is the second attempt by the government to have the party banned. Its first petition to the court in 2008 was dismissed.Leader Tomas Vandas declared after the court's decision that even if an appeal is unsuccessful, the party will simply dissolve itself and reform under another name, such as the Affiliated Workers' Social Justice Party, he said.The party is known for its boisterous anti-gypsy rallies that take place near Roma communities and which frequently end in violence.In November, 2008, a force of some 1,000 riot police battled a 500-strong protest march by the party and its supporters in the town of Litvinov when the group attempted to descend upon a Roma suburb.
The party's youthful backers hurled petrol bombs and rocks at the police, injuring seven policemen. Seven demonstrators were also injured.The group however, does not enjoy great electoral success, with only three local councillors and no nationally elected MPs.In the European Parliament elections of June last year, the Workers' Party scored just 1 percent.However, analysts believe the court's ruling sets a precedent for going after the country's Communist Party, which does enjoy popular support. EU investigates paper imports from China

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - The EU has launched an investigation into imports of glossy paper from China following a complaint from European producers over product dumping.
The probe, announced on Thursday (18 February) in the EU's Official Journal, is the latest in a string of trade disputes creating tension between the two sides. Cepifine, an association of European fine paper manufacturers, contacted the European Commission in January with allegations that fine coated paper, used for glossy books and magazines, was being imported at artificially low prices from China. As a result, European businesses have suffered substantial adverse effects, said the association, which represents roughly 25 percent of EU manufacturers producing coated fine paper. The commission now has 15 months to establish whether Chinese paper imports are being offered at artificially low prices, potentially leading to anti-dumping taxes if it decides in the affirmative. Prima facie evidence provided by the complainant shows that the volume and the prices of the imported product under investigation have, among other consequences, had a negative impact on the quantities sold and market share held by the Union industry,said the Official Journal.The EU has already imposed anti-dumping taxes on a range of imports from China including leather shoes, steel products and candles. The commission defended it tariffs on Chinese leather shoe imports earlier this month, saying it was the right thing to do, after Beijing hauled the EU to the World Trade Organisation to dispute the punitive duties. The US, which has also seen a deterioration in trade relations with China in recent months, decided three years ago to impose anti-dumping penalties on Chinese paper imports.

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - Ukraine Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko's allies in the EU's centre-right political establishment have hinted that she should give up her presidential campaign if she loses a key court challenge.Ms Tymoshenko is set to appear at a hearing of Ukraine's Higher Administrative Court on Friday (19 February) to press her claim that rival candidate Viktor Yanukovych used fraud to win the second round of the election.The court is expected to rule by Sunday, potentially clearing the way for Mr Yanukovych's inauguration on 25 February. German centre-right MEP Elmar Brok, a leading figure in the European People's Party (EPP) and in the EU parliament's foreign affairs committee, told EUobserver that Ms Tymoshenko has every right to bring a legal challenge if she has evidence of wrongdoing.But when asked if she risks alienating EPP allies by protracting her refusal to accept defeat, Mr Brok added: This should not last too long ... There will be a court decision and then it should not be the case to continue [the dispute] for a long time so that we have a deadlock.British Conservative MEP Charles Tannock, a personal friend of Ms Tymoshenko but whose party is no longer an EPP member, said: My advice to Yulia is: In a democracy, if you have been beaten fair and square, then you have to concede defeat.I have to say with a heavy heart that I'm afraid Yanukovych won the election. Five Muslim soldiers were arrested for allegedly trying to poison the food supply at Fort Jackson in South Carolina, according to CBN News. The men, arrested just before Christmas, were part of the Arabic Translation program at the base, the Christian network said. A source with intimate knowledge of the ongoing investigation told CBN News that investigators suspect the Fort Jackson Five may have been in contact with the five Northern Virginia Muslims who traveled to Pakistan to wage jihad on U.S. troops. CBN News reporter Erick Stakelbeck said it's unclear whether the Fort Jackson soldiers are still in custody.The ongoing probe began two months ago, Chris Grey, a spokesman for the Army’s Criminal Investigation Division, told Fox News.The Army is taking the allegations extremely seriously,Grey said, but so far,there is no credible information to support the allegations of attempting to poison.
The young men from Northern Virginia, arrested Dec. 8 in Pakistan, had contacted terrorist groups, including two with links to al-Qaida. A 21-year-old New Jersey man accused of kidnapping his 3-month-old daughter and throwing her off a bridge is described by his father as a devout Muslim who prayed regularly and is said to have immediately visited mosques and confessed to an imam following his crime. Shamsid-Din Abdur-Raheem, an aspiring lawyer and student at Richard Stockton College, reportedly held a leadership position in the Muslim Student Association at Stockton, according to college senior Zaw Win. The group's member and officer list has been disabled on its website. He was also an intern in Washington, D.C., with the juveniles section of the Office of the Attorney General, according to March 2009 press release from Stockton College. He was fired after only a month for missing work and not completing assignments. He lashed out during his termination, and security personnel escorted him out of the building. Abdur-Raheem allegedly forced his way into the baby's maternal grandmother's home at 4 p.m. on Feb. 16, punched the 60-year-old woman in the face and choked her. He took 3-month old Zara Malani-lin Abdur, and the grandmother chased him outside. She threw herself on the hood of a Dodge Caravan as Abdur-Raheem climbed into the passenger side, clutching his daughter, New Jersey's Star-Ledger reports. According to some reports, he left with an unidentified man at the wheel, though other accounts say he was the only man in the van.
The baby's mother, Venetta Benjamin, has full custody of the baby and is not married to Abdur-Raheem. He had reportedly threatened to harm Benjamin in the week prior to the abduction because she didn't want to marry him. Benjamin was filing a restraining order against him at the time he abducted his daughter. After arriving at the Driscoll Bridge and dropping his daughter into the icy cold water of the Raritan River, Abdur-Raheem is said to have immediately driven to see Imam Amin Muhammad at the Masjid Mohammed in Atlantic City, and then to Masjid un-Nur in Camden County. His father, Muhsin Abdur-Raheem, described his son as a devout Muslim and said he prayed often. He said his son sought counsel from an imam at Masjid Muhammad following the abduction. Shamsid-Din Abdur-Raheem then visited his father, who called the police around 8 p.m. Authorities stopped Abdur-Raheem's red 2002 Dodge Caravan in Winslow Township but did not find the baby with him. Police say Shamsid-Din Abdur-Raheem told them he threw the baby off the Garden State Parkway's Driscoll Bridge. He has been charged with kidnapping and attempted murder, aggravated assault and child endangerment. The kidnapping charge carries a maximum sentence of 30 years in state prison, and the attempted murder charge carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in state prison Despite the alleged confession, he pleaded not guilty during his arraignment today. We're all distraught about this, his father told the Philadelphia Inquirer.We're faithful people. We don't condone any kind of violence.Despite an exhaustive search, dozens of emergency personnel have been unable to find the baby. Authorities say her chances for survival are slim at this point.Asked if he believes she may survive, the father said,I hope it's a miracle.

The Islamic Society of North America, or ISNA, boasted in its website that it facilitated the meeting at New York University with Brennan. ISNA, whose members asked Brennan scores of questions during the event, stated the meeting was intended to initiate a dialogue between government officials and Muslim American leaders to explore issues of national security.The Justice Department named ISNA an unindicted co-conspirator in its case against the Holy Land Foundation in Texas, which was found guilty of raising money for the Hamas terrorist organization. Last year, Holy Land founders were given life sentences for funneling $12 million to Hamas.ISNA is known for its enforcement of Saudi-style Islam in mosques through the U.S. Discover the Networks notes ISNA, through its affiliate, the North American Islamic Trust – a Saudi government-backed organization – reportedly holds the mortgages on 50 to 80 percent of all mosques in the U.S. and Canada. Thus the organization can freely exercise ultimate authority over these houses of worship and their teachings, states DTN. ISNA was founded in 1981 by the Saudi-funded Muslim Students' Association. The two groups are still partners. WND previously attended an MSA event at which violence against the U.S. was urged by speakers. Islam scholar Stephen Schwartz describes ISNA as one of the chief conduits through which the radical Saudi form of Islam passes into the United States.According to terrorism expert Steven Emerson, ISNA is a radical group hiding under a false veneer of moderation that publishes a bi-monthly magazine, Islamic Horizons, that often champions militant Islamist doctrine.The group also convenes annual conferences where Islamist militants have been given a platform to incite violence and promote hatred,states Emerson. Dated Jan. 4, 1996, the four-page cable was drafted and issued under the authority of FBI director Louis Freeh and is heavily redacted. However, despite the redaction, the memo exposes an informant operation being conducted at the time by Morris Dees and his notorious SPLC.If I told you what we were doing there, I would have to kill you, Dees later told reporters.As it turns out, McVeigh’s contact at Elohim City, Andreas Carl Strassmeir, who was allegedly connected to Aryan Republican Army, spent several years in the German army, including a stint as an intelligence officer. Peter Langan, the son of a retired U.S. Marine intelligence officer and said to be the leader of the Aryan Republican Army, was a government informant.In short, the supposed white supremacist movement at Elohim City was a government operation.
Less than 24 hours after the event in Austin, we still only have a sketchy idea of who Joe Stack was. People say the attack was completely contrary to his character. He was apolitical and not given to diatribes against the government.Is it possible he was set-up or possibly killed and put in a remote controlled plane that was directed into the Echelon office complex that houses IRS offices in Austin? Considering government complicity in numerous terrorist events — including the documented false flag event of September 11, 2001, and the obvious government operation in Oklahoma City — there is a distinct possibility.

Even before many of the details were confirmed surrounding yesterday’s tragic events in Austin, political operatives were callously exploiting the incident to advance their agenda in demonizing opponents of big government as terrorists who crash planes into buildings – unfortunately for them it has since emerged that Joe Stack was not a fringe extremist and he was not a member of any Tea Party organization.
Time Magazine instantly labeled Stack a domestic terrorist and openly implied links to the Tea Party by including a red link to an article about the Tea Party movement in the middle of their story about the Austin plane crash.A Washington Post editorial compared Stack with Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh and claimed, “His alienation is similar to that we’re hearing from the extreme elements of the Tea Party movement.This is of course a ludicrous aspersion to make. Polls show that at least 66 per cent of the entire country are angry with the federal government – that doesn’t mean that 200 million Americans are going to slam planes into buildings or indeed do anything violent. Tea Party protests have been noted for their peaceable nature – not so much of a window has been broken.New York Magazine jumped on the bandwagon, writing that Stack’s rhetoric could have been taken directly from a handwritten sign at a tea party rally,again overwhelmingly implying that anti-tax groups and small government advocates should be silenced because they are dangerous extremists.But by far the most belligerent reaction came from the Obamanoid blog websites, places like the Daily Kos which carried a post entitled, Teabagger terrorist attack on IRS building.After months of threats on the United States government, and government institutions, the Anti-Government forces known as the teabaggers have struck with their first 911 (sic) inspired terrorist attack,read the post.Of course, blaming random acts of violence on the liberty movement has become par for the course for those who wish to crush the free speech of their political adversaries. The University of Alabama-Huntsville murders were also blamed on the Tea Party movement until it turned out that the killer was an Obama-worshipper.
Unfortunately for those who like to exploit tragedies to further their own anti-free speech talking points, it turns out that Stack was not a teabagger,he was not a terrorist,and he was no Timothy McVeigh, he was a guy pushed to the edge, a sad figure in the mould of Michael Douglas’ character in the movie Falling Down.Austin Tea Party director Greg Holloway told Newsmax that Stack was not a member of the Austin Tea Party.His name does not appear on any of their contact lists, Holloway says. He does not know of any tea party leader who ever met him, writes David A. Patten.Asked his reaction to media reports linking the tea party movement to the tragedy, Holloway told Newsmax,I think it’s just the whole notion of a few people in politics, and I’ll include some of the media, that everything is about political process rather than about people. Here you’ve got a terrible tragedy involving so many people, and the first thought is: How do I use this to forward my own agenda and to try to attack someone elses? National tea party leader Everett Wilkinson also poured cold water on any links to Tea Party groups. As far as I know, Joseph Andrew Stack was not a member of the tea party movement,he said. The movement is not involved in protesting the IRS, but rather government spending. Our best wishes go out to the families and people involved.In addition, despite efforts to portray Stack as a political extremist, friends told CBS News that Stack talked politics like everyone but didn’t show any obsession.People who knew Stack said he was an easy going guy, a view backed by Infowars producer Rob Dew, who knew Stack from the Austin music scene and said he was a reserved, soft-spoken, well-dressed man. Dew expressed his shock that Stack could have been capable of flying a plane into a building.The picture that emerges from all this is not of a violent terrorist hell-bent on destruction to further his paranoid political agenda, as many in the media have attempted to portray, but a man driven to the edge of sanity as a result of his personal disputes with the IRS.
That didn’t stop controlled shill Glenn Beck comparing Stack to Osama Bin Laden and fitting him in to his fairytale delusion about terrorists being within Obama’s inner circle ready to kill the President. Beck even threw the people he claims to represent – Tea Party members – under the bus by saying Stack could be a radical constitutionalist,which is how a lot of Tea Party members would describe themselves.
To characterize yesterday’s tragedy as a deadly portend of the domestic terror waiting to be unleashed on U.S. cities by disgruntled Americans is not only completely irresponsible, it’s a revelatory insight into how desperate the establishment is – both fake left and right – to neutralize growing peaceful political opposition to the big government agenda across the country.

Georgia on Thursday (19 February) warned Europe against a proposed French sale of warships to Russia, as it would allow Moscow to invade any former Soviet republic within hours, echoing concerns raised by Baltic leaders that the deal is in breach of an EU code on arms trade.During a visit to London, President Mikheil Saakashvili said that the warship sale was very risky and would reward Russia's continued military presence in Georgia's breakaway provinces, in violation of a French-brokered ceasefire agreement after a brief war in 2008.Russia is negotiating a €500 million deal to buy at least one Mistral, an assault ship capable of carrying up to 16 helicopters and a 750-strong landing force. It has also expressed interest in three others. Czech court bans far-right Workers Party

The Czech Republic's top court has banned a far-right political group, the first time a party has been banned in the country since its separation from Slovakia in 1993.On Wednesday (17 February), the Supreme Administrative Court (NSS) outlawed the Workers' Party, finding that it deployed racist, xenophobic, homophobic and anti-Semitic language and was a threat to Czech democracy.The court agreed with the government, which originally filed the petition, noting its strong links to neo-Nazi and white supremacist groups.The party, which rejects the accusation that it is a neo-Nazi group itself, has said it will appeal.It is the second attempt by the government to have the party banned. Its first petition to the court in 2008 was dismissed.Leader Tomas Vandas declared after the court's decision that even if an appeal is unsuccessful, the party will simply dissolve itself and reform under another name, such as the Affiliated Workers' Social Justice Party, he said.The party is known for its boisterous anti-gypsy rallies that take place near Roma communities and which frequently end in violence.In November, 2008, a force of some 1,000 riot police battled a 500-strong protest march by the party and its supporters in the town of Litvinov when the group attempted to descend upon a Roma suburb.
The party's youthful backers hurled petrol bombs and rocks at the police, injuring seven policemen. Seven demonstrators were also injured.The group however, does not enjoy great electoral success, with only three local councillors and no nationally elected MPs.In the European Parliament elections of June last year, the Workers' Party scored just 1 percent.However, analysts believe the court's ruling sets a precedent for going after the country's Communist Party, which does enjoy popular support. EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - The EU has launched an investigation into imports of glossy paper from China following a complaint from European producers over product dumping.
The probe, announced on Thursday (18 February) in the EU's Official Journal, is the latest in a string of trade disputes creating tension between the two sides. Cepifine, an association of European fine paper manufacturers, contacted the European Commission in January with allegations that fine coated paper, used for glossy books and magazines, was being imported at artificially low prices from China. As a result, European businesses have suffered substantial adverse effects, said the association, which represents roughly 25 percent of EU manufacturers producing coated fine paper. The commission now has 15 months to establish whether Chinese paper imports are being offered at artificially low prices, potentially leading to anti-dumping taxes if it decides in the affirmative. Prima facie evidence provided by the complainant shows that the volume and the prices of the imported product under investigation have, among other consequences, had a negative impact on the quantities sold and market share held by the Union industry,said the Official Journal.The EU has already imposed anti-dumping taxes on a range of imports from China including leather shoes, steel products and candles. The commission defended it tariffs on Chinese leather shoe imports earlier this month, saying it was the right thing to do, after Beijing hauled the EU to the World Trade Organisation to dispute the punitive duties. The US, which has also seen a deterioration in trade relations with China in recent months, decided three years ago to impose anti-dumping penalties on Chinese paper imports.

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - Ukraine Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko's allies in the EU's centre-right political establishment have hinted that she should give up her presidential campaign if she loses a key court challenge.Ms Tymoshenko is set to appear at a hearing of Ukraine's Higher Administrative Court on Friday (19 February) to press her claim that rival candidate Viktor Yanukovych used fraud to win the second round of the election.The court is expected to rule by Sunday, potentially clearing the way for Mr Yanukovych's inauguration on 25 February. German centre-right MEP Elmar Brok, a leading figure in the European People's Party (EPP) and in the EU parliament's foreign affairs committee, told EUobserver that Ms Tymoshenko has every right to bring a legal challenge if she has evidence of wrongdoing.But when asked if she risks alienating EPP allies by protracting her refusal to accept defeat, Mr Brok added: This should not last too long ... Five Muslim soldiers were arrested for allegedly trying to poison the food supply at Fort Jackson in South Carolina, according to CBN News. The men, arrested just before Christmas, were part of the Arabic Translation program at the base, the Christian network said. A source with intimate knowledge of the ongoing investigation told CBN News that investigators suspect the Fort Jackson Five may have been in contact with the five Northern Virginia Muslims who traveled to Pakistan to wage jihad on U.S. troops. CBN News reporter Erick Stakelbeck said it's unclear whether the Fort Jackson soldiers are still in custody.The ongoing probe began two months ago, Chris Grey, a spokesman for the Army’s Criminal Investigation Division, told Fox News.The Army is taking the allegations extremely seriously,Grey said, but so far,there is no credible information to support the allegations of attempting to poison.
The young men from Northern Virginia, arrested Dec. 8 in Pakistan, had contacted terrorist groups, including two with links to al-Qaida. A 21-year-old New Jersey man accused of kidnapping his 3-month-old daughter and throwing her off a bridge is described by his father as a devout Muslim who prayed regularly and is said to have immediately visited mosques and confessed to an imam following his crime. Shamsid-Din Abdur-Raheem, an aspiring lawyer and student at Richard Stockton College, reportedly held a leadership position in the Muslim Student Association at Stockton, according to college senior Zaw Win. The group's member and officer list has been disabled on its website. He was also an intern in Washington, D.C., with the juveniles section of the Office of the Attorney General, according to March 2009 press release from Stockton College. He was fired after only a month for missing work and not completing assignments. He lashed out during his termination, and security personnel escorted him out of the building. Abdur-Raheem allegedly forced his way into the baby's maternal grandmother's home at 4 p.m. on Feb. 16, punched the 60-year-old woman in the face and choked her. He took 3-month old Zara Malani-lin Abdur, and the grandmother chased him outside. She threw herself on the hood of a Dodge Caravan as Abdur-Raheem climbed into the passenger side, clutching his daughter, New Jersey's Star-Ledger reports. According to some reports, he left with an unidentified man at the wheel, though other accounts say he was the only man in the van.
The baby's mother, Venetta Benjamin, has full custody of the baby and is not married to Abdur-Raheem. He had reportedly threatened to harm Benjamin in the week prior to the abduction because she didn't want to marry him. Benjamin was filing a restraining order against him at the time he abducted his daughter. After arriving at the Driscoll Bridge and dropping his daughter into the icy cold water of the Raritan River, Abdur-Raheem is said to have immediately driven to see Imam Amin Muhammad at the Masjid Mohammed in Atlantic City, and then to Masjid un-Nur in Camden County. His father, Muhsin Abdur-Raheem, described his son as a devout Muslim and said he prayed often. He said his son sought counsel from an imam at Masjid Muhammad following the abduction. Shamsid-Din Abdur-Raheem then visited his father, who called the police around 8 p.m. Authorities stopped Abdur-Raheem's red 2002 Dodge Caravan in Winslow Township but did not find the baby with him. Police say Shamsid-Din Abdur-Raheem told them he threw the baby off the Garden State Parkway's Driscoll Bridge. He has been charged with kidnapping and attempted murder, aggravated assault and child endangerment. The kidnapping charge carries a maximum sentence of 30 years in state prison, and the attempted murder charge carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in state prison Despite the alleged confession, he pleaded not guilty during his arraignment today. We're all distraught about this, his father told the Philadelphia Inquirer.We're faithful people. We don't condone any kind of violence.Despite an exhaustive search, dozens of emergency personnel have been unable to find the baby. A radical Muslim group that was an unindicted co-conspirator in a scheme to raise money for Hamas facilitated the controversial meeting last week between Muslim law students and John Brennan, President Obama's top adviser on counter-terrorism. The Islamic Society of North America, or ISNA, boasted in its website that it facilitated the meeting at New York University with Brennan. ISNA, whose members asked Brennan scores of questions during the event, stated the meeting was intended to initiate a dialogue between government officials and Muslim American leaders to explore issues of national security.The Justice Department named ISNA an unindicted co-conspirator in its case against the Holy Land Foundation in Texas, which was found guilty of raising money for the Hamas terrorist organization. Last year, Holy Land founders were given life sentences for funneling $12 million to Hamas.ISNA is known for its enforcement of Saudi-style Islam in mosques through the U.S. Discover the Networks notes ISNA, through its affiliate, the North American Islamic Trust – a Saudi government-backed organization – reportedly holds the mortgages on 50 to 80 percent of all mosques in the U.S. and Canada. Thus the organization can freely exercise ultimate authority over these houses of worship and their teachings, states DTN. ISNA was founded in 1981 by the Saudi-funded Muslim Students' Association. The two groups are still partners. WND previously attended an MSA event at which violence against the U.S. was urged by speakers. Islam scholar Stephen Schwartz describes ISNA as one of the chief conduits through which the radical Saudi form of Islam passes into the United States.According to terrorism expert Steven Emerson, ISNA is a radical group hiding under a false veneer of moderation that publishes a bi-monthly magazine, Islamic Horizons, that often champions militant Islamist doctrine.The group also convenes annual conferences where Islamist militants have been given a platform to incite violence and promote hatred,states Emerson. Emerson cites an event in which al-Qaida supporter and PLO official Yusuf Al Qaradhawi was invited to speak at an ISNA conference. Also, ISNA has held fundraisers for terrorists, notes Discover the Networks. After Hamas leader Mousa Marzook was arrested and eventually deported in 1997, ISNA raised money for his defense. The group also has condemned the U.S. government's post-9/11 seizure of Hamas' and Palestinian Islamic Jihad's financial assets. Military officers at Fort Hood have faced criticism for failing to report what some have described as glaringly jihadist sentiments of Nidal Hassan, the terrorist who carried out a shooting massacre at the Texas Army base in November, killing 13 people and wounding 30 others. Brennan has come under fire after the video of his NYU session surfaced on the Internet, although his remarks about profiling largely went unnoticed. At the session, Brennan stated that having a percentage of terrorists released by the U.S. return to terrorist attacks isn't that bad,since the recidivism rate for inmates in the U.S. prison system is higher.
He also criticized parts of the Bush administration's response to 9/11 as a reaction some people might say was over the top in some areas that in an overabundance of caution [we] implemented a number of security measures and activities that upon reflection now we look back after the heat of the battle has died down a bit we say they were excessive, okay.Brennan is also coming under fire for previous remarks he made about jihad. Nor does President Obama see this challenge as a fight against jihadists,said Brennan. Describing terrorists in this way – using a legitimate term, jihad,meaning to purify oneself or to wage a holy struggle for a moral goal – risks giving these murderers the religious legitimacy they desperately seek but in no way deserve. Worse, it risks reinforcing the idea that the United States is somehow at war with Islam itself. And this is why President Obama has confronted this perception directly and forcefully in his speeches to Muslim audiences, declaring that America is not and never will be at war with Islam.Earlier this week, WND reported Brennan argued the U.S. should encourage greater assimilation of the Hezbollah terrorist organization into the Lebanese government. Outside of al-Qaida, the Iranian-backed Hezbollah has the distinction of having killed the most Americans in terror attacks. It is also responsible for scores of terrorist actions targeting Israelis, including rocket launchings against civilian population centers. Hezbollah's attacks against the Israeli north in 2006 killed 43 Israeli civilians and wounded more than 4,000. In a July 2008 article in The Annals, a publication of the American Academy of Political and Social Sciences, Brennan argued it would not be foolhardy, however, for the United States to tolerate, and even to encourage, greater assimilation of Hezbollah into Lebanon's political system, a process that is subject to Iranian influence. Continued Brennan: Hezbollah is already represented in the Lebanese parliament and its members have previously served in the Lebanese cabinet, reflections of Hezbollah's interest in shaping Lebanon's political future from within government institutions. This political involvement is a far cry from Hezbollah's genesis as solely a terrorist organization dedicated to murder, kidnapping and violence.
Also, at a press conference in August at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, Brennan declared, Hezbollah started out as purely a terrorist organization back in the early '80s and has evolved significantly over time. And now it has members of parliament, in the cabinet; there are lawyers, doctors, others who are part of the Hezbollah organization.Maintenance of a civilian unit of doctors and lawyers by terrorist groups is common in the Middle East. Hamas has long brandished a civilian wing that provides medical care and education to the Palestinian population. According to Israeli security officials, Hezbollah and Hamas emphasize this outreach to endear their terror groups to the local population. Brennan went on to state, Quite frankly, I'm pleased to see that a lot of Hezbollah individuals are in fact renouncing that type of terrorism and violence and are trying to participate in the political process [in Lebanon] in a very legitimate fashion.Brennan, assistant to the president and deputy national security adviser for homeland security and counter-terrorism, did not cite specific examples of Hezbollah members renouncing violence. Hezbollah routinely affirms its so-called armed wing operates to target Israelis. Just yesterday, Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah threatened Israel's international airport. Hezbollah in 1983 carried out a massive attack on the American Marines barracks inside Lebanon in which suicide bombers detonated truck bombs, killing 241 American servicemen, representing the highest single-day death toll for the Marines since the Battle of Iwo Jima of World War II.
