Almost 700 million women worldwide got married before turning 18, some as young as 10 or 11, and 15 million more join them each year. Some are coerced; others enter into marriage voluntarily for reasons of tradition, culture or economic necessity. But the outcomes are similar: Dropping out of school, social isolation, early pregnancy, maternal mortality and limited future opportunities are common consequences.Abaynesh, Ramgani and Nayane are three girls whose stories illustrate the causes and effects of early unions across different cultures. Their stories, their lives, are only three of many._____Abaynesh-“Once married, I tried to continue my studies, but my family and my in-laws decided I shouldn’t study anymore,” says Abaynesh, 14, as she paces the hut of wood, sun-dried brick and straw that she shares with her husband and two mules in Gindero, which is in the Amhara region of Ethiopia.Surrounded by fields, with high green mountains in the distance and a night lit only by the stars, this is a lonely, timeless place. There are no neighbors, running water, electricity or clocks.The sun has not yet risen, and Abaynesh is ready to go to the river to get water. She carries a 20-liter drum on her back, and neither its weight nor her advanced pregnancy slows her.Her in-laws changed her name to Jemata when she married three years ago. She wasn’t happy with the change but accepted it as in keeping with tradition. “When I was little, I had very good grades. I wanted to be a doctor,” she says, looking back on her abbreviated childhood with nostalgia.Ethiopia has about 1.9 million women aged 20 to 24 who were married before 18, placing it fifth in the world. It also ranks second in the number of women who have undergone genital mutilation, which has affected 23.8 million women, or 74 percent of the female population between 15 and 49 years old, according to UNICEF.Abaynesh contributes to both statistics. Her inner labia, or labia minora, were cut a few days after she was born, a practice common in more than 20 countries, mostly in Africa.Genital mutilation and child marriage are related and stem from some of the same social conditions: gender inequality, a patriarchal culture and the desire to control the sexual freedom of women. Genital mutilation is presented as a way to give women characteristics valued by their society.Abaynesh was not mutilated to guarantee her purity, nor to make intercourse less pleasurable, but to “facilitate male penetration once married,” explains Mesel Nigusie, who has done female circumcision for the last 28 years. “It must be done before girls reach 15 days old because the body is stronger and heals faster,” she says, adding that the wound heals and stops hurting within eight to 10 days.Abaynesh’s father-in-law says that families prefer circumcised women for cultural reasons. He believes that girls who have undergone the procedure adapt better to their husband’s family, are less rebellious and become better wives.The diversity of cultures and ethnic groups in Ethiopia makes it difficult to generalize about sexual and marriage patterns. Ethiopian girls often are married off young as part of an agreement between the two families. But sometimes, if the bride’s family refuses the proposal, the man kidnaps his would-be bride, and by tradition the girl’s family must accept the union.Abaynesh’s eyes reflect the exhaustion that her body hides. She prepares coffee after dinner, crouching in the middle of her in-laws’ room. She speaks hardly a word and takes no part in the family’s conversation around her. This will be her routine for the foreseeable future as her dream of becoming a doctor fades away.-Ramgani-“I want to finish my studies,” says Ramgani, 18, with the conviction of someone who is planning on changing her luck and maybe the luck of other girls and women like her.She is late to school because her chores have kept her busy longer than usual. She bursts into the playground with energy and raises a cloud of dust when she runs toward the fountain. Ramgani is not wearing the female uniform of her school; she wears the same white trousers as the boys. Her body language conveys a certainty and strength that are at odds with her delicate and shy speech.Ramgani was married as a young girl, but the marriage became “effective” when she was 14 and her husband’s family made her come live with them. Her story is one of a continuing struggle to escape her destiny as a woman in a rural village in Bhilwara District, in the state of Rajasthan, India.According to figures from UNICEF, 27 million Indian women between 20 and 24 were married before they turned 18. In Rajasthan, among women in the same age bracket, 65 percent were married as children.But Kailash Brijwasi, director of the NGO Jatan Sansthan, which has worked in India for the past 15 years to end this practice, says, “These statistics only gather registered data by the government,” and the “official number is lower than reality.”Three-quarters of the women in Rajasthan live outside of cities, and 55 percent of those are illiterate.Ramgani fights not to become one of them. She bears the weight of being a woman in a society that is deeply patriarchal and is also subject to rules of caste. Ramgani is part of the Jat caste. Married Jat women in the countryside do not sit at the same level as their husbands or male relatives. If a man sits on a chair, a woman must sit on the ground. If a man is standing, a woman must do the same until he leaves the room.The gender roles and caste system are deeply rooted in society, abetted by weak legal protections, an overwhelmingly male power structure, and the precarious economic conditions of a large part of the population. Those factors also conspire to make child marriages common.Ramgani is the fifth of nine sisters, all of whom were married in ceremonies on consecutive days. In India, the bride’s family provides the dowry and hosts the ceremony. To save money, it is common to marry several daughters at the same time to men from the same family, which results in younger brides.Although the girls are paired with their husbands when they are very young, they usually do not leave their parents’ house until they reach puberty. Therefore, the wedding for most is a distant memory by the time they are claimed by the in-laws. One of Ramgani’s younger sisters, who is 11 years old, already spends time at her in-laws’.Once they leave the family home, girls take over the house chores in their new home, and few are allowed to continue their education. Chandra Ramesh, a teacher at the GGSS Kahla School in Bhilwara, Rajasthan, says that only 30 percent of these girls go back to their studies.Ramgani had to leave school when she moved in with her husband’s family, but eventually, with the help of Jatan Sansthan, she persuaded her father to bring her home so that she could continue in school. She now divides her time between her family home and her in-laws, but she is pressured by both families to return to her husband. She frequently fights with her father about her insistence on continuing her studies. Nevertheless, she has managed to stay in school.Arti Khatik, 16, has not had the same luck. The mother of a 10-month-old, she was married when she was around 7, and six or seven years later she moved to her husband’s house. She explains how she was forced to lose her virginity at 14. Now she dreams of a life away from a husband who drinks and doesn’t provide for their child, except when he forces her to have sex, saying, “Shut up, I’ll give you money for the baby.”Indian legislation is strict on paper. Any union in which the woman is under 18 or the man is under 21 is considered illegal. However, the government lacks the resources to enforce the law, according to Paresh Ram Bhali, one of the government representatives in Bhilwara District, and so the practice of child marriage continues.Back home, Ramgani straddles the motorbike that a family member lent her and smiles shyly. “If they make me go back to my husband, I will escape,” she says, almost whispering.-Nayane-Nayane, 15, and her twin sister, Nayara, have their eyes glued to their phones, which vibrate with each incoming message. Nayara hasn’t left the house in three months. The drug-trafficking gang controlling her community imposed this punishment, along with a beating that landed her in the hospital, for having a forbidden relationship with a man from a rival group. Nayane keeps her company during her confinement.They are on the bed in a small faded room in a house in Parque União, in the Maré favela complex, north of Rio de Janeiro. In Nayane’s lap is Ana Sophia, her 10-month-old daughter.Neither of the twins goes to school. Nayane is getting ready to go to a funk-music party like the one where she met the father of her daughter. The young mother has his photo on her T-shirt. He died six months ago. He was involved in drug trafficking and was shot in a police raid. Nayane was never married to him.Brazil ranks fourth worldwide in the number of child marriages. Almost 1 million women between ages 20 and 24 were married before 15, and 3 million were married before 18. The minimum age to get married is 16, with parental consent. But in certain circumstances, including pregnancy, this rule can be suspended.Brazil differs from other countries in that the young women involved are often already pregnant and consent to marriage rather than being forced into it — and the unions may be unofficial and unrecorded.Girls get married or initiate a stable cohabitation with family encouragement after an unplanned pregnancy because of social pressure, as described in a study by the NGO Promundo.Vanessa Fonseca, project coordinator of Promundo, highlights two main reasons why girls enter into an early marriage in Brazil: financial stability and freedom in a society where girls living at home are often subject to very strict family control. And many of Nayane’s friends decided to live with their partners, leaving their families and their rules.Unlike brides in some other countries, such as India or Ethiopia, these young girls are not forced into unions. “They get married and ‘separated’ when they think they have to,” says Fonseca. However, they can suffer the same consequences: domestic violence, dropping out of school, diminished job prospects and maternal health problems.It is a problem often overlooked by the government. Some time ago, Christiane Pereira, who lives in the same favela as Nayane, began a relationship and married very young after getting pregnant with her first daughter, born when she was 16. Now, divorced from that man and the mother of two other girls, she sees this pattern repeating among other girls in her neighborhood who seek to escape abuse and lack of affection at home.Nayane’s friends have come to pick her up for the dance. With braces on their teeth and too much makeup on their faces, they play at being grownups, a game that for many will end with a pregnancy and a life of drudgery.

ESSEN, Germany (Reuters) - German police sealed off and closed a shopping mall in the heart of the western city of Essen on Saturday after the security services warned of a possible terrorist attack.Germany is on high alert following deadly militant Islamist attacks in France and Belgium and after a failed asylum seeker from Tunisia drove a truck into a Berlin Christmas market in December, killing 12 people."Yesterday, we received very serious indications from security sources that a possible attack was planned here for today and would be carried out," a spokesman for Essen police told Reuters Television. "That is why we were forced to take these measures."Earlier, a police spokesman told a German broadcaster they believed the Limbecker Platz shopping center was under threat of a possible terrorist attack.Armed police and vans surrounded the shopping center, one of the biggest in Germany with more than 200 retail outlets, but roads nearby were open to traffic.In the afternoon, police said they had searched an apartment in the nearby town of Oberhausen and the owner was being questioned. BEIRUT/DAMASCUS (Reuters) - A double bomb attack targeting Shi'ite pilgrims in Damascus killed at least 40 Iraqis and wounded 120 more who were going to pray at a nearby shrine, the Iraqi foreign ministry said.There was no immediate claim of responsibility for Saturday's attack, which the Hezbollah-run al-Manar TV station said had been carried out by two suicide bombers.Footage broadcast by Syrian state TV showed two badly damaged buses with their windows blown out. The area was splattered with blood and shoes were scattered on the ground.Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has been supported in the country's war by Shi'ite militias from countries including Iraq, Afghanistan and Lebanon.The attack took place at a bus station where the pilgrims had been brought to visit the nearby Bab al-Saghir cemetery, named after one of the seven gates of the Old City of Damascus.The second blast went off some 10 minutes after the first at around 10 a.m. (0800 GMT), inflicting casualties on civil defense workers who had gathered to tend to the casualties, the Damascus correspondent for al-Manar told the station by phone.The pilgrims were due to pray at the cemetery after visiting the Sayeda Zeinab shrine just outside Damascus, he said.Sayeda Zeinab - the granddaughter of the Prophet Mohammad - is venerated by Shi'ites and her shrine is a site of mass pilgrimage for Shi'ites from across the world. WATCH | Intelligence sources say that the FBI investigated a computer tied to Donald Trump's business but there's no evidence to date that would warrant criminal charges against any of the president’s associates.The months-long FBI counterintelligence investigation into Russian efforts to influence the 2016 presidential campaign briefly investigated a computer server tied to Donald Trump's businesses near the end of the election but has not gathered evidence of election tampering to date that would warrant criminal charges against any of the president’s associates, Circa has learned.-Widespread frustration-U.S. officials, who spoke only on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the information, said there is widespread frustration among intelligence professionals who have watched in horror as a normally secretive process has been distorted by media leaks and politicians uneducated about how counterintelligence operations actually work."I've never seen a case so misrepresented and leaks so damaging to a process that was meant to be conducted in secret."—U.S. official.“We have people spouting off who don’t know the difference between FISA surveillance and a wiretap or a counterintelligence probe versus a special prosecutor, and it has hurts our ability to get to the truth and has wrongly created the impression that intelligence officials have a political agenda,” said one source directly familiar with the drama.Here are the most notable US-Russia controversies-It's about Russia more than Trump-Many of the leaks have surfaced since former President Barack Obama in his waning days in office had his intelligence leadership brief a wider than normal audience about the sensitive Russia surveillance. Those leaks have created a false narrative that the FBI has been predominantly focused on Trump ties to Russia, officials said.In fact, any FBI activity involving the president’s associates or advisers was mostly ancillary to a wider counterintelligence probe into Russian efforts to influence the election or curry favor with U.S. figures, the sources said.“The (Trump-Russia) narrative in the media hasn’t been our primary focus and mostly involves pieces of information that came in incidentally. We check them out and we move on,” one official said, adding most of the work has involved old-fashioned investigative tactics and not surveillance.Added another official: “I’ve never seen a case so misrepresented and leaks so damaging to a process that was meant to be conducted in secret so that foreign powers don’t know what we know and people’s reputations aren’t tarnished unfairly.”Several sources with direct knowledge say the FBI’s interest in investigating possible Moscow efforts to influence the 2016 election was born out of its long expertise on Russian players gathered back from the 2001 Robert Hansen espionage affair and the 2010 Anna Chapman spy ring scandal.-Russian activity raised suspicions-Other intelligence agencies also were gathering similar evidence highlighting Russian activity like computer hacking and propaganda.The bureau, along with other intelligence agencies, had early signs of political-motivated hacking by Russia and uncorroborated information from among others a former British intelligence officer about possible contacts between Russian intelligence and people close to Trump.“There were indicators of Russian activity and uncorroborated allegations of Trump associates having contact with key figures and we needed to know if they were connected or not,” one source described. “We’d be remiss if we did not answer that question for the national security community.”-Probe starts into Russian connections with US citizens-Officials decided the best course of action was to pursue a classic counterintelligence investigation focused on what the Russians were actually doing and whether anyone in the United States, including on the Trump team, might be encouraging or facilitating those actions or financially benefitting from them.One of the documents that agents tried to corroborate became known as the “Trump dossier,” the work of a trusted ex-British intelligence agent hired by political operatives to find damaging evidence on Trump in Russia. Some of the information in the dossier was explicit and salacious and uncorroborated -- like an alleged interlude between Trump and a prostitute in Moscow a few years back and an alleged Russian bribe that could have spelled billions of dollars for Trump’s companies.-Information could not be corroborated-Agents were able to corroborate some details in the dossier, mostly public source intelligence about meetings and decisions involving Russian figures. But much of the information about Trump and associates could not be corroborated. Some was disproven and other facts took on new connotations when additional investigation was concluded.-FISA used in probe-For instance, the FBI and Justice Department received a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act warrant in October to help further the Russia investigation. Officials stressed there were no intercepts of Trump’s phone or emails.Separately, they used traditional investigative techniques to review a computer server tied to the the soon-to-be-president's businesses in Trump Towers in New York but located elsewhere.Agents were examining allegations of computer activity tied to Russia.. Very quickly, they concluded the computer activity in question involved no nefarious contacts, bank transactions or encrypted communications with the Russians, and likely involved routine computer signals.The towers are home to Trump’s business, personal residence and then-campaign headquarters.-The Flynn connection-The officials also strongly disputed that the FBI’s intercepts of conversations in December between soon-to-to-be U.S. National Security Adviser Michael Flynn and Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak were part of a continuing Trump-focused national security investigation. In fact, they were part of a long-established special intelligence program in which the FBI is routinely permitted to review intercepts of Russian embassy officials.Americans are often incidentally intercepted, and the FBI has authority to review those conversations without a specific warrant when they involve national security matters. Flynn fell into that category in part because he had a security clearance, the sources said.The sources said Flynn exchanged a handful of calls or text messages to the Russian ambassador in December, including holiday wishes and condolences for recent Russian tragedies.Some involved more substantive policy issues, something the FBI flagged for the larger intelligence community because Obama was still in power and Trump was not yet in power."We'd be remiss if we did not answer that question for the national security community."—U.S. official-What Flynn and Kislyak talked about-For instance, after the Russian ambassador sent a text message seeking a phone call, Flynn and Kislyak talked about sanctions imposed by Obama on Russia on Dec. 29, but the message the American official gave was mostly that a new sheriff was about to take over the White House and Russians shouldn’t react to the new sanctions in a way that would foreclose better dialog in the future under a Trump administration, sources said.-Currently, no evidence against Flynn-There was also a discussion of a possible conference about Kazakhstan the next month, they added. To date, the FBI has not found anything that rises to criminal activity in the Flynn conversations, though the ultimate decision will reside with prosecutors in the Justice Department, the sources said.-Russia was hacking to try and influence the election-The information gathered during 2016 by the FBI, however, did further a robust portrait already being built by numerous intelligence agencies, like the National Security Agency, the Central Intelligence Agency and Directorate of National Intelligence, that Russia and its related actors had taken actions like hacking to influence the U.S. election with the apparent aim of hurting Hillary Clinton’s election chances or helping Trump.There also was evidence of Russian-friendly figures trying to curry favor with those close to Trump, something that happens at all levels when a new president is poised to take office.But there was no concrete evidence of bribes, illicit money or other criminal activity related to the Russian effort to influence elections. So the FBI proceeded to process security clearances for key Trump players about to take jobs in the new administration, the sources said.-Obama and Trump briefed-At Obama’s request, a highly classified briefing was prepared for the outgoing and incoming presidents, which was given to both men over the December holiday break. Obama, who had received updates through 2016 on the issue, used his detailed briefing as the final justification for the new sanctions on Moscow announced on Dec. 29, which included expelling three dozen Russians from America.Trump used his briefing to dispel what he saw was a myriad of “fake news” reports suggesting his team was complicit with Russians in trying to hijack the election.The FBI contributions to the briefing included mention of the uncorroborated Russian dossier created by the British intelligence agent.The FBI chose to include the information to educate the new president in particular to the tactics of Russian intelligence agencies, including the planting of false stories in documents like the dossier and the use of money and sex to compromise Western leaders or to leave them open to bribery, sources said.Until that point, the FBI surveillance process was mostly free of political interference and followed the normal rigors of a counter-intelligence investigation closely monitored by a supervisory court of federal judges and other intelligence apparatus.-The leaks begin-But the start of the New Year brought with it an unexpected politicizing of the intelligence gathered in secret. Director James Comey even took the step of asking Justice to knock down the claim. While the computer server was investigted, Trump’s phones and emails were never wiretapped, officials said.Comey’s request was designed to combat any insinuation that the FBI was used by the Obama administration as a political-enemy intelligence gathering agency in the midst of the election.But inside the intelligence community it also conveyed another powerful message: Comey has always insisted the bureau won’t comment on ongoing probes. So his willingness to push out a comment was a sign the FBI doesn’t see a criminal case emerging so far.

In the next month, 15 female Israel Defense Forces recruits will begin the process of becoming the first women to serve in the Armored Corps, as part of a pilot program to assess fuller gender integration in the unit, a tank officer said Thursday.The IDF announced in November that it was considering allowing women to serve in the Armored Corps, drawing blowback from former high-ranking officers and religious groups.The 15 soldiers will be picked from a crop of new recruits drafted into mixed-gender combat battalions. They will go through standard basic combat training, before advancing in August to specialty tank training, where they will learn how to operate the Merkava Mark 3 model.In December, they will take positions in the army’s 80th Division, which is responsible for the southern Negev and Arava deserts, and help guard the borders with Egypt and Jordan, the officer said, speaking on condition of anonymity.They will serve in all-female tanks, in order to avoid issues of modesty. Serving on the Egyptian and Jordanian borders, they will be less likely to need to cross into enemy territory.However, all-male and all-female crews would come with their drawbacks, creating two distinct forces.Today, in an emergency, a soldier from one tank crew can be switched with a soldier from another crew; not so if one of the soldiers is from a male crew and the other from a female crew. Such practical issues will also be investigated during the trial program.By March 2018, the pilot program will officially end, and the military will review the results, the tank officer said.“We’re doing a test. After the test, we’ll have answers — if it’s possible or impossible for there to be girls [in the Armored Corps],” he said.A military official told the Haaretz newspaper last month that if the program is successful, female tank operators will likely help guard Israel’s borders, rather than take part in fighting behind enemy lines.Until now, women have been barred from serving in the tank brigades as it was believed that they could not physically handle the rigors of the Armored Corps. Female soldiers have, however, served as tank instructors.The 15 candidates will be monitored throughout the pilot program by nutritionists, doctors and exercise instructors to determine if they can handle the challenges of the position, Ynet reported last week.Since the army’s initial announcement about reconsidering the integration of the tank brigades, the argument over female enlistment has continued to rage. On Tuesday, Channel 2 news broadcast footage of a prominent rabbi saying that army service turns Jewish girls into gentiles. His comment sparked a frenzy of denunciation by politicians, though one religious lawmaker said the rabbi was “brave” for making his remarks.Within the Armored Corps, there has also been some opposition voiced to gender integration.Before the army announced its plans to consider allowing women to serve in the tank brigades, the head of the Armored Corps, Brig. In 2016, just 0.7 percent of drafted soldiers requested a spot in the IDF’s tank brigades, Hasson said at the end of last year.In December, a group of 86 recruits who were meant to enlist in the Armored Corps refused to do so and were sent to army prison.Most were later convinced to join the tank brigades, but the incident prompted a need for additional efforts to market the corps, the officer said.“In Golani, you go home with the Tavor [assault rifle]. In Armored, you don’t go home with a tank for the weekend,” he said.The tank brigades have therefore stepped up their efforts to “expose” people to the units.“Yesterday, we had a prospective recruits conference, where we invited them to find out about the corps and we showed them the tanks and let them go in and try them out,” he said.The next draft date for the Armored Corps is on March 19, and with it, another possibility of an embarrassing mass refusal to serve.To combat this, representatives from the unit have been “meeting with people in their homes,” he said, in order to convince them that the Armored Corps offers its soldiers meaningful military service.

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio condemned the threat amid increasing anti-Semitism.The museum was evacuated Thursday morning following a call to the police, AM New York reported.Devorah Halberstam, the museum’s director of foundation and government services, told JTA the evacuation was still ongoing as of 11:15 a.m.“It’s a trying time for us as a Jewish people especially, and we need to be aware and we need to take heed, and we need to be careful,” Halberstam said.She added: “I’m referring to all the threats that have been going on both locally and internationally — it’s something that is very frightening. Unfortunately anti-Semitism has been around for the longest time and I guess things don’t change, now it’s done by emails and phone calls. Israel will close off the West Bank from Friday until Sunday as a preventative measure against attacks during the Jewish festival of Purim, the IDF announced on Thursday.Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman instructed the army to impose the closure from 12:01 a.m. on Friday until 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, the army said.Entering and exiting the West Bank will be forbidden for Palestinians during those three days, with the exception of “humanitarian, medical and exceptional cases,” according to an IDF statement.Those special cases will require the approval of the Defense Ministry’s Coordinator of the Government’s Activities in the Territories.The crossings will not be closed on Monday, when Purim is celebrated in Jerusalem.The closure will affect the tens of thousands of Palestinians who legally work in Israel every day, most of them in construction and maintenance.Within the West Bank, however, Palestinians will be able to enter Jewish settlements to work during the closure, a spokesperson said.Last year the West Bank was also closed for Purim in light of the general security situation.During the festival, which fell on March 24, IDF soldier Elor Azaria shot and killed Abed al-Fattah al-Sharif, minutes after Sharif and another man had carried out a stabbing attack on troops in Hebron, and as Sharif lay on the ground disarmed and bleeding, having been shot during the attack.Azaria was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 18 months in prison, though both the defense and prosecution have appealed the sentence.In 1994 on Purim, Jewish terrorist Baruch Goldstein killed 29 Palestinian worshipers in Hebron’s Tomb of the Patriarchs. The extremist doctor mowed down the Muslim worshipers and wounded 125 others with automatic gunfire. Purim megillah readings and activities will come to over 400 neutral, non-religious locations throughout Israel this year.The Tzohar Rabbinical Organization, which works to bridge the gap between the religious and secular in Israel, and Ohr Torah Stone’s Yachad, or Together, Program, will hold the Megillah BaKehilla, or Megillah in the Community programs throughout the country over the Purim holiday.Among the venues are community centers, local entertainment facilities, and school gyms. This year readings also are scheduled to take place in several fire stations, to recognize the challenging few months that firefighters experienced around the country this year.Over 50,000 people are expected to participate in the readings and programs.“Purim is a holiday that inspires the participation of Israeli Jews of all backgrounds and levels of observance,” said Rabbi David Stav, chairman of Tzohar and co-chancellor of Ohr Torah Stone. “We welcome the chance to use this holiday as an avenue to get all Israelis involved in their religion and feel more attached to their nation and traditions.”Tzohar has been coordinating community holiday programming for over 10 years, with the goal of making Jewish holiday traditions accessible to all Jews in Israel in a non-coercive atmosphere. Bob Menendez.Friedman will now go to the full Senate for a final vote on his confirmation, though it is not yet clear when. He is likely to be approved, as there would need to be at least three Republican defections to block the nomination.Democrats warned ahead of the vote that Friedman was ill-equipped for such a sensitive diplomatic position-“The last thing we need in this position is somebody who has a penchant for over the top hyperbolic and even false statements,” said Virginia Sen. Police shut down three brothels in Bat Yam Wednesday as part of a broader operation targeting the prostitution industry in Israel.It also arrested four people on suspicion of running prostitution houses — two men and two women, one of whom is a Ukranian tourist.Police also confiscated tens of thousands of shekels that were found at the scenes, police said.Authorities have been working in recent months to crack down on the brothel industry in Tel Aviv and its surrounding cities.While prostitution itself remains legal in Israel, pimping, sex trafficking, and running a brothel are punishable by law.On Tuesday, Tel Aviv vice units raided four brothels in the city believed to have been exploiting minors. Large sums of money and prostitution solicitation cards were uncovered.Three women were detained on respective charges of withholding evidence, withholding money, and assaulting police officers. Each was granted conditional release after questioning, according to Hebrew media reports.Earlier this week, indictments were filed at the Tel Aviv Magistrate’s Court against two distributors of business cards advertising prostitution services.For years, the cards have been littering the streets of Tel Aviv, typically featuring a provocative photo of a women along with the phone number and address of the advertising brothel.
