and injured six others on Monday in northern Iraq, authorities said.The
fire erupted at an upgrading unit in the Baiji refinery, once the
country's largest oil refinery, in Salaheddin province.The Iraqi
government's security media unit said in a statement that firefighters
had extinguished the fire.It added that "one worker was killed and six
others were injured."Local official in Baiji city Adel al-Daj told AFP
that the explosion was caused by a technical malfunction.The Baiji
refinery, 200 kilometres (124 miles) north of Baghdad, was heavily
damaged in some of the fiercest battles with the Islamic State group
after it swept across a third of Iraq in 2014.After the facility's full
rehabilitation, authorities reopened it in February 2024.Iraq is one of
the world's biggest oil producers and crude oil sales make up 90 percent

Somalia signs defence agreement with Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia, as the Horn of Africa becomes an arena for proxy wars
between Gulf monarchies, with Abu Dhabi at loggerheads with Riyadh.The
region, strategically located between the Indian Ocean and the Suez
Canal on one of the world's busiest trade routes, has increasingly
attracted the interest of the Gulf states.The agreement comes a month
and a half after Israel recognised Somaliland, a self-proclaimed
republic that seceded from Somalia in 1991 but which Mogadishu still
considers to be under its control.Somali Defence Minister Ahmed Moallim
Fiqi and his Saudi counterpart, Prince Khalid Bin Salman, signed a
"military cooperation agreement" on Monday, according to a message on X
from the Somali defence ministry."This agreement further strengthens
defence and military cooperation between the two nations, while covering
various areas of mutual interest for both countries," it said.In a
separate post on X, Salman added he had "signed and witnessed the
signing" of "several" agreements on the sidelines of a military
