Richards, Douglas Axe and William Briggs-October 17, 2020 | 12:36pm -As the coronavirus pandemic drags on, fewer people are dying and more people are recovering with few or no problems. But you won’t read this in the mainstream press.
On Sept. 22, CNN triumphantly announced that 200,000 people had died from COVID-19 in the United States.CNN tried various ways of rubbing in the 200,000 figure. Their best effort was an infographic blaring, “US COVID-19 deaths are equal to having the 9/11 attacks every day for 66 days.”Here’s a less biased, but less catchy, comparison: 2020’s attributed COVID-19 deaths were equivalent to having another 2017-2018 flu and pneumonia season boosted by 13 percent.The CDC estimated that about 177,000 Americans died during the 2017-2018 flu season, from either the flu itself or by complications of pneumonia. (The CDC never made a public announcement about this number, but you can count it yourself from data on its site, as I did in the chart below.) That was a bad year, noted at the time, but mostly by medical professionals. Those with good memories will recall seeing more “Wash Your Hands” and “Cough Into Your Elbows” posters.Still, nobody remembers a panic. Just as nobody remembers mask mandates or political leaders shutting down small businesses and locking the healthy in their homes. Because, of course, none of that happened. (This lack of panics during past pandemics is detailed in our book, “The Price of Panic: How the Tyranny of Experts Turned a Pandemic into a Catastrophe.”)-On the same day as CNN’s announcement, the CDC officially posted a total 187,072 deaths attributed in some way to COVID-19. Deaths were boosted to a hair under 300,000 after adding in pneumonia and flu.This is the more important number, since it captures the disease burden better than CNN’s. Even so, it’s not clear how many deaths were caused by the coronavirus alone, how many died with but not simply from infection by the coronavirus, and how many died of other things but just happened to be infected around the time of death.The CDC itself caused a stir at the end of August by estimating that the virus directly caused only 6 percent, or now just over 11,000 of the 187,000 attributed deaths. Most of these deaths were in the elderly.The remaining 94 percent died with and not exclusively of the coronavirus. These people also were on average elderly and had 2.6 other health problems. This implies a good fraction who succumbed had three or more comorbidities. In other words, most deaths attributed to the coronavirus were in very sick people.Unfortunately, tests for the presence of the bug are prone to false positives. This is when the test says somebody has a current infection when they don’t. The test can mistake past infections as current, or even tag infections of other coronaviruses. The one causing COVID-19 is only one among many.False positives are not normally a big concern. They are this year because of the huge number of tests given. According to The COVID Tracking Project, in September we averaged over 800,000 tests every single day. Over one million tests were conducted on several days.Even a tiny false-positive rate at this level is a problem. Take the 1 percent false-positive rate, cited by some. If 5 percent of the public has the disease at one time, a million tests will produce 9,500 false “new cases.”It might seem odd that testing numbers are going up even as attributed deaths drop. But this paradox is largely due to the fact that we do so much testing. Deaths re-peaked in late July as the virus spread in southern states for the first time. They have been dropping rapidly since. If the current rate of decline holds, attributed deaths will drop to a background level by the end of October.Even calling positive tests “cases” overstates the problem. True cases are active illnesses that need treatment. But by now most people testing positive are asymptomatic or have only mild illness.That’s the real lead in this story: Fewer people are dying and more people are recovering with few or no problems. A group of 11 young Emiratis and Bahrainis Facebooked, tweeted and Instagrammed their way through Israel this month, part of an influence campaign funded by Americans and Israelis aimed at marketing Israel in light of the recent Gulf normalization deals.The trip was organized by a newly formed organization made up of Israeli Jews and Arabs known as Sharaka (Arabic for partnership), and it grew out of a similar trip to the Gulf recently made by a group of Israel Defense Forces veterans, many of whom are part of both groups.“We want to make an actual warm peace,” said Amit Deri, who heads both Sharaka and Reservists on Duty, the IDF group (the two groups are technically unrelated to one another).Deri contrasted the ties he was hoping to foster with the “cold” peace agreements that Israel has with Egypt and Jordan, whose governments maintain significant high-level security ties with Jerusalem, but whose populations generally have a negative view of the Jewish state.The delegation was made up primarily of young men and women chosen for their social media followings, and come from influential families in the Gulf. One dominant figure on the trip, Amjad Taha, a Bahrain-based British Arab commentator on regional politics, who is deeply critical of Iran and the Palestinians, maintains over 300,000 followers on Twitter. There they met with the head of the local council and a prominent figure in the Bedouin community, Hassan al-Heib.The group discussed the similarities between the Gulf states and Israel’s Bedouin population. RABAT, Morocco — The heads of a joint Israeli-American delegation held high-level talks Tuesday with Moroccan officials, including King Mohammed VI, as Israel and Morocco announced they would move to swiftly reopen diplomatic missions in each country.Earlier in the day, Israeli National Security Adviser Meir Ben-Shabbat and Jared Kushner, US President Donald Trump’s senior adviser and son-in-law, traveled with a joint Israeli-American delegation to Rabat aboard the first commercial flight from Israel to Morocco, following the normalization of ties between the countries announced on December 10.Upon arriving, the delegation visited the Mausoleum of King Mohammad V in Rabat — a national landmark — laying wreaths on the monarch’s tomb. From there, Ben-Shabbat, Kushner and their teams traveled to the royal palace to meet with Moroccan officials and with the king, who did not take part in the public ceremonies.An Israeli official said the meeting with the king lasted approximately an hour. In place of embassies, the two planned to reopen liaison offices — Israel’s in Rabat, Morocco’s in Tel Aviv — which had been closed in late 2000, when Morocco decided to call off the existing low-level ties between the two countries with the outbreak of the Second Intifada.Though the two countries’ liaison offices were closed some 20 years ago, the properties remained in each of their possession, allowing Jerusalem and Rabat to rapidly reopen them. Bourita said his country planned to open its office and install a diplomat at the level of an ambassador within the next two to three weeks. Before take off, Kushner noted that a similar flight from Israel to the United Arab Emirates after a normalization agreement was reached kicked off a massive wave of Israelis traveling to the Gulf, tens of thousands as of this month. A CHRISTIAN evangelist has predicted the world will come to an end before Christmas this year.Pastor Paul Begley believes doomsday will strike on December 21, 2020, which also happens to be his birthday.The Mayan calendar was used to make this latest doomsday prophecy.But despite hundreds of prophecies over the centuries predicting the end of the world none have ever come true.Although not the first to make such a prediction, Nostradamus is said to have predicted the world would end in a reference to the “King of Terror” would arrive in “1999 and seven months”.The most recent prediction by conspiracy theorists thought the world would come to an end on June 21 this year, with reference to the Mayan calendar.Begley, from Indiana, now believes the world will come to an end close to the end of this year.He is not alone in that theory as Jeane Dixon, one of the US's most prominent self-proclaimed astrologers and psychics of the twentieth century, also predicted that Armageddon would take place in 2020.Pastor Begley said: "Of course, the Mayan elders said [June 21] could have been the end of the world. Also known as the Star of Bethlehem, the Christmas Star is seen as a result of Jupiter and Saturn aligning as part of the so-called Great Conjunction. The Great Conjunction is a term coined by astronomers to describe the close passing of the two large planets, and it occurs around every 20 years. This passing is the closest recorded in hundreds of years, creating a "spectacular event in the sky", that will make the planets appear as one star - despite both still being around 400 million miles from one another.The last time it was witnessed, with such extraordinary visibility, was 1226, and with it coming in the winter solstice, it is being called the Christmas Star in reference to the story of Jesus' birth.According to a passage in the Gospel of Matthew, the star shone brightly in the aftermath of Jesus' arrival on Earth, leading three wise men to follow it to where he was born.The events have even led one observer to claim a new messiah may be born.Nigel Henbest, author of Philip's 2021 Stargazing Month-by-Month Guide to the Night Sky in Britain & Ireland, exposed his vision of events by using the works of Johannes Kepler, who was integral to scientific research during the 17th century.We will use your email address only for sending you newsletters. This he argued was the Star of Wonder - or Star of Bethlehem.According to Forbes, that revelation - and the fact that nearly 2,000 years on another is set to be witnessed, led Mr Henbest to say: “Kepler thought that the star of Bethlehem was a triple conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn.“Here we are two millennia later and a similar conjunction is about to happen within four days of Christmas Day… maybe a new Messiah is about to be born.”The last triple great conjunction was witnessed in 1980, and astronomers say the next will be in 2239.There is no scientific basis for whether this phenomenon is in fact the Star of Bethlehem, but some astronomers and theologians do argue there could be a case for it.Dr Carolin Crawford, from the University of Cambridge's Institute of Astronomy, claimed that "2,000 years ago, people were a lot more aware of what was happening in the night sky".She told the BBC that therefore it was "not impossible that the Star of Bethlehem was a planetary alignment" like the one suggested by Mr Kepler.Others, including EarthSky's Bruce McClure and Deborah Byrd, added: "Some believe the Christmas star was really a conjunction – or close meeting – of Jupiter with two other planets, Saturn and Mars."Planets were 'wandering stars' to the ancients, and to many, they bore great astrological or mystical significance."
The Christmas Star is set to be visible in the western sky for around 90 minutes after sunset, which is expected at around 3.50pm today.
