A newspaper reported Beijing, the capital, has begun allowing some people with the virus to isolate at home, avoiding crowded quarantine centers that have prompted complaints. The government didn’t immediately respond to a request for confirmation.But many of the rules that brought people into the streets of Shanghai, Beijing and at least six other cities remain in force. Israel’s 75-plus population will increase by 48 percent by 2030, creating an urgent need to bolster the health system, according to new research.Over the next seven years, the age group will grow from 500,000 to 740,000, modeling suggests. The numbers come from a study by Myers-JDC-Brookdale Institute, a Jerusalem-based research organization.“The children of the baby boomer generation, those born soon after World War II, are reaching old age, and it’s a demographic trend we need to take notice of,” Yitschak Shnoor, the researcher behind the study, told The Times of Israel.He said that the challenges for the health system are significant, as the elderly require a disproportionately high level of medical care.The study, which was published only in Hebrew, includes a statistical look at hospital needs. For this part of the research, Shnoor studied the 65-plus age bracket and found that it accounts for 63% of hospitalizations in internal wards, 59.6% in intensive COVID care wards, 58.6% in pulmonary wards and 49.4% in COVID-19 wards.These statistics hint at the increased burden the health system will face, Schnoor said, commenting: “There will be more strain on the system, but we aren’t seeing the necessary increases in infrastructure, the numbers of doctors and the supply of hospital beds.“We need to recruit more doctors, and we need to be working on this now — it’s already late.”Schnoor’s concerns are echoed by many experts who are unconnected to his study. (Ivanoh Demers/Radio-Canada)-The federal government is already preparing to deal with a new convoy protest being planned for February, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's national security adviser told a parliamentary committee Thursday evening.Testifying before a special committee of MPs and senators set up to study the government's use of the Emergencies Act to shut down the protest that paralyzed downtown Ottawa and blocked several border crossings last winter, Jody Thomas said officials are aware a second convoy protest is in the works and her colleague Mike MacDonald, assistant secretary to the cabinet for security and intelligence, has already begun to prepare."Mr. MacDonald has already chaired meetings to start looking at how we're going to respond," Thomas said in response to a question from Senator Peter Harder. "DMs [deputy ministers] will be meeting for the first time about it this week."Her comments come a week after James Bauder, the founder of a group called Canada Unity and one of the organizers of last winter's convoy protest, posted on social media calling for a Freedom Convoy 2.0 to descend on Ottawa from Feb. 17 to 21, 2023.Bauder, who was among those arrested last February, is facing several charges. Among his bail conditions is not to return to downtown Ottawa.Lessons from last time-Thomas said the government has learned a number of lessons from last winter's convoy protest — lessons that it has already begun to apply.Thomas said two issues came out of the protest: the threat posed by some ideologically motivated violent extremists (IMVE) who participated in the protest and how the government understands open-source domestic intelligence."You can't just sit on Twitter and understand what is going on," Thomas told the committee. "You need to use tools, artificial intelligence, those kinds of things."While Twitter is public, there are still rights to privacy so a legal framework is needed, she said."Understanding the information and the trends that are out there without associating it to individuals who are not persons of interest to law enforcement or intelligence agencies is a big, complex issue and it is something that we are focusing a significant amount of work on but we don't yet have an answer to."MacDonald said the lessons learned from the convoy protest helped officials handle the Rolling Thunder motorcycle protest last spring and a protest on Canada Day. Thomas said not allowing trucks to stop was another lesson learned.The government has also learned it has to take ideologically motivated violent extremists in Canada more seriously, Thomas said."We underestimate and underestimated — probably no longer — the ideologically motivated extremists," she told the committee. "This problem exists in Canada and it is here to stay. We need to understand what it is and have the tools to do something about it."Threat of weapons-Thursday evening's hearing came shortly after a search warrant was unsealed, revealing that the number of firearms, ammunition and pipe bombs seized at the blockade of the border crossing in Coutts, Alta., was much larger than previously known.Thomas said she hadn't been aware of the extent of the cache but the presence of weapons in Coutts influenced the federal government's thinking about the Ottawa protest."We had knowledge that Ottawa was far from clear and we were starting to hear the same language — weapons in the rigs, weapons in Ottawa, knowledge of weapons … it would have been negligent not to make the same presumptions about the potential of weapons in Ottawa."Thomas also told the committee that online threats against public officials rose sharply around the time of the protest. OTTAWA — As many as five Canadian Armed Forces veterans were offered medically assisted death by a now-suspended Veterans Affairs Canada caseworker, the minister responsible for the department has testified.The case has now been turned over to the RCMP for investigation, Veterans Affairs Minister Lawrence MacAulay told members of the House of Commons veterans affairs committee on Thursday.“I’ve said it before and I’ll say it once again, what happened was totally unacceptable,” MacAulay told committee members.“There is no way to justify it, and I will not try to do that today, or ever.”MacAulay said after learning of the revelations he ordered Deputy Minister Paul Ledwell to conduct an internal investigation, which found a total of four cases where veterans were offered MAID — all allegedly by the same caseworker.That number, MacAulay confirmed, does not include the case first reported by the National Post on Thursday, where an active-service CAF member calling himself “Bruce” told Tango Romeo podcast host Mark Meincke he was offered MAID out of the blue by a caseworker last November.MacAulay said his office had just learned of the case via media reports, and urged the veteran — who is afraid of repercussions of coming forward — to contact him personally.The first case made public over the summer occurred on July 21, where the caseworker repeatedly suggested MAID to an unnamed veteran who had called seeking help with PTSD and other injuries — telling him that Veterans Affairs had helped other veterans end their lives, and that it was a better alternative to “blowing your brains out.”The third known case occurred in 2019, where a veteran called Veterans Affairs specifically asking for information about assistance in taking his own life — a case where MacAulay said MAID was “inappropriately raised” and was the only time the individual had contact with the caseworker.The fourth time occurred this past May, where the caseworker again provided MAID information to a veteran.MacAulay offered an apology to veterans, explaining they create instances of “sanctuary trauma” and that the department is retraining front-line staff.“I am sorry you had to endure these appalling interactions, and we’re doing everything we can to ensure this never happens again,” he said.Upon further questioning by committee vice-chair Blake Richards, MacAulay conceded that the veteran involved in the December 2021 case has since died  after medically assisted suicide.Both MacAulay and Ledwell declined to provide details about the caseworker, and weren’t able to confirm if she was involved in the fifth case reported Wednesday by the National Post.Ledwell confirmed the case was only forwarded to the RCMP on Wednesday, but citing privacy reasons declined to say when the caseworker was suspended.After some questioning by Richards, MacAulay confirmed the department had completed investigating the caseworker’s previous contact with veterans.“In that case, either something was missed in that investigation, or there is another employee involved — and now it’s a matter of determining which of those two things it is,” Richards said.“In either case that’s concerning — obviously in the one case it means your investigation isn’t nearly thorough enough, and that might mean there’s a need for an outside investigation.”MacAulay said they’d need to get information from Bruce on his case before making that determination.Both Richards and fellow committee member Luc Desilets expressed surprise at how long this caseworker was permitted to be in a position where she could repeatedly offer MAID to veterans.“You’ve called it inappropriate, it’s potentially criminal because you’ve referred it to the RCMP. To receive these Editor’s Notes as they’re released, join the ToI Community here.Day after day, as he negotiates the staffing and agenda for his incoming coalition, Benjamin Netanyahu is openly preparing to turn Israel from a remarkable democracy, the only one in the region — with all the healthy strains of a powerful political echelon rubbing up against the brakes of a liberal judiciary — into something approaching untrammeled rule by a narrow, relatively homogeneous, hardline majority.Day after day, he is concertedly awarding ever more power to extreme ideologues who he and we all know will abuse it.His conduct since his November 1 election victory is shocking, indeed incomprehensible — even taking into account the complications of forging a government among radical, emboldened egotists. And the consequences are potentially devastating.What we are witnessing, in short, is a moment of destiny for Israel, a moment of drastic, fateful, fundamental change.The three incendiary provocateurs.With the simply unthinkable imminent appointment of Itamar Ben Gvir as the minister of national security, Netanyahu has agreed to place a reckless, oft-convicted rabble-rouser in charge of Israel’s police force.Less than two years ago, even though he had himself brokered the political merger that would enable Ben Gvir to enter the political mainstream and become a member of Knesset, Netanyahu recognized that the Otzma Yehudit leader was “not fit” for ministerial office. Ben Gvir’s views and activities — as a Kahanist disciple who had spent years urging the expulsion of Arab Israelis; who had kept a picture of Baruch Goldstein, the Hebron mass killer, on his living room wall; who had been excluded from IDF service because of the danger he posed as a young provocateur known for boasting in a TV interview, as he brandished the Cadillac symbol ripped off Rabin’s car, that he and his circle could “get to” the soon-to-be assassinated prime minister — were manifestly incompatible with responsible governance. Netanyahu is days away from giving Ben Gvir control over the very police force that arrested him, investigated him and saw him convicted in 2007 of the crimes of support for a terrorist organization and incitement to racism-Now Netanyahu is days away from giving Ben Gvir control over the very police force that arrested him, investigated him and saw him convicted in 2007 of the crimes of support for a terrorist organization and incitement to racism, a force whose commander accused him of fanning the flames of 2021’s deadly Arab-Jewish violence in Israel’s mixed cities and East Jerusalem.Moreover, the terms of their deal will reportedly see Ben Gvir entrusted with more authority than any previous minister of police, with a capacity to influence policy and priorities, and thus potentially undermine the independence of the force, in breach of existing laws and codes. The Knesset will thus have to pass fresh legislation in order to empower him.It remains unclear whether this pyromaniacal figure, who urges eased open-fire rules for the security services, has pushed for full Jewish prayer rights atop the Temple Mount, and whose party’s last known published manifesto called for annexing the West Bank without giving Palestinians voting and other rights, will also be given control over Border Police units that operate in the West Bank, as he has demanded.Already, Ben Gvir is utilizing his ostensible new legitimacy by undermining and challenging Israel’s military establishment, campaigning this week against the IDF’s punishment of a soldier who taunted a left-wing activist in Hebron.Netanyahu is also negotiating to install Bezalel Smotrich, an arguably still more uncompromising far-right ideologue, as minister of finance, having initially entertained the notion of making him minister of defense. Again, the conferral of such significant responsibility on so dependably incendiary a political activist ought to be beyond consideration.Smotrich was held for three weeks by the Shin Bet Security service for an alleged terrorist plot — to target Israeli drivers on the Ayalon Highway — in protest of 2005’s Gaza disengagement. A self-described “proud homophobe” who helped organize a so-called Beast Parade against the Jerusalem pride march, he too wants to annex the biblical Judea and Samaria without anything resembling equality for Palestinians, is hostile and dismissive to non-Orthodox streams of Judaism, and ultimately seeks to turn Israel into a theocracy, its judicial system based on the laws of the Torah.In the run-up to the November 1 elections, Smotrich presented a detailed program for judicial reform that would render the High Court of Justice toothless, both by neutering justices’ capacity to protect individual rights from assault by the political majority of the day — with the so-called override clause — and by giving the governing coalition sufficient votes on the selection committee to choose those judges in the first place.As in the case of Ben Gvir, it remains unclear whether Netanyahu will also grant Smotrich his outrageous demand for the remaking or dismantling of the Civil Administration that oversees the disputed West Bank. The changes that Smotrich seeks, and seeks to oversee, in this context — via the transfer of authority over the Civil Administration from the Defense Ministry to his command — would appear to represent de facto annexation, and would render Israel more vulnerable than ever before to international criticism, censure and potential sanction, to the delight of its enemies and despair of its allies.Finally, among the ultra-nationalist ideologues, Netanyahu has negotiated to establish an authority for “Jewish identity,” based in the Prime Minister’s Office, to be headed by Avi Maoz, the sole Knesset member from the tiny Noam faction, who has the support of just a few tens of thousands of Israelis and who only squeezed into parliament thanks to the Netanyahu-brokered alliance on the far-right.Maoz and Noam are deeply hostile to non-Orthodox Judaism, making the notion of entitling Maoz as the deputy minister in charge of Jewish identity for the government of Israel particularly alienating for the millions of non-Orthodox Jews around the world, many of whom feel immensely connected to Israel-Maoz’s new authority will have an initial NIS 100 million budget (some $29 million), rising to NIS 150 million in year two, and a staff of 15. Under the published terms of the coalition deal, the homophobic, anti-pluralist and anti-Arab Maoz will, deplorably, be handed control over outside programming in the nation’s schools, giving him direct responsibility for some of what is taught — a function hitherto, naturally, filled by the Education Ministry. This arrangement was denounced by the outgoing education minister on Wednesday as “a moral disgrace.”Maoz and Noam are also deeply hostile to non-Orthodox Judaism, making the notion of entitling Maoz as the deputy minister in charge of Jewish identity for the government of Israel particularly alienating for the millions of non-Orthodox Jews around the world, many of whom feel immensely connected to Israel.Common to all three of these “religious Zionists” is the malignant, un-Jewish misconception that being the “chosen people” indicates that we are somehow better than and entitled to oppress inferiors — Judaism as supremacism. But Judaism is not a supremacist religion. Our tradition, rather, is that we have been entrusted with a code of moral behavior that we are obligated to live by and disseminate, at the heart of which, to quote Hillel, is the imperative: “That which is hateful unto you, do not do to your neighbor. This is the whole of the Torah; the rest is commentary.” To quote Netanyahu himself, asked by Bari Weiss in an interview on Wednesday whether he believes the Jewish people are chosen: “Yes. In the sense that we have brought to the world the idea of morality.”Many of the policies that Ben Gvir, Smotrich and Maoz advocate are a direct negation of authentic JudaismMany of the policies that Ben Gvir, Smotrich and Maoz advocate are a direct negation of Hillel’s core principle, of authentic Judaism. Now, these three are aiming to implement them.Neutered judiciary, empowered ultra-Orthodox politicians-There is more, much more, playing out with bewildering speed, and with potentially ruinous consequences — for Israel as a democratic state, for Israel as the homeland for all Jews, for Israel as a strong economic force, for Israel as a unified nation, for Israel as a nation capable of defending itself in this hostile region. So rapidly are new arrangements and new demands being unveiled in recent weeks, with such far-reaching impact, indeed, that it has become difficult to even keep track.In his negotiations with the two ultra-Orthodox parties, for example, Netanyahu has reportedly agreed to cement the exclusion of ultra-Orthodox males from military service, with no requirement for alternative national service either. Long sought by Haredi politicians who evidently want to consign their constituents to lives of hardship and poverty — and to betray the Orthodox Jewish tradition where the community supports the brightest would-be Torah scholars and the rest fulfill the obligation to work for a living and provide for their families — this blanket exclusion has been struck down by the High Court as discriminatory. Once the aforementioned override clause is in place, however, there would be no impediment to the legislation.Many non-ultra-Orthodox Israelis have long railed against the inequality — objected that they and their children risk their lives to protect the country in mandatory military service while the ultra-Orthodox do not, and that their taxes are channeled to subsidize a sector of the electorate many of whose males don’t go to work. But Netanyahu veritably invited Smotrich to maximize his demands, immediately after the elections, by signaling that his previously stated intention to keep the Defense, Treasury and Foreign ministerial portfolios in the hands of the Likud party no longer held. Since those most prominent jobs were now on offer, Smotrich unhesitatingly went for the Defense post, and when this proved unreachable he is now playing hardball for the Treasury job, plus those far-reaching Civil Administration responsibilities.As for Maoz, who directly represents almost nobody but alienates almost everybody, his single vote is no make-or-break for Netanyahu’s coalition, and he could have been offered almost any take-it-or-leave-it position. Yet it merely required him to publicly complain that Netanyahu had yet to negotiate with him, and hours later he was sitting face-to-face with the presumed incoming prime minister. And rather than fobbing him off with a minor position, Netanyahu chose to confer upon him the “Jewish identity” role — granting a title indicating an oversight role for all Jews in Israel, with implications for all Jews everywhere, to a hitherto marginal figure whose views are anathema to the overwhelming majority of our nation.Breaking faith with his own personal historyYes, Netanyahu has become more hawkish over the years, as have many Israelis since the Second Intifada, amid the rise of Hezbollah and Hamas in territories vacated by Israel and in the face of abiding Palestinian rejectionism. And yes, Netanyahu has plainly been marked by his corruption trial, convinced that he has been unjustly indicted for actions he either denies outright or insists do not constitute wrongdoing.But Netanyahu was always a great Israeli patriot — the scion of a devotedly Zionist family, who lost his heroic, beloved brother in military action at Entebbe, and himself performed courageous, life-threatening military service in the IDF’s most elite unit. And he is not Israel’s longest-serving prime minister by accident; for three years in the 1990s, and for an extraordinary 12 years from 2009 to 2021, he led this country with sufficient skill and popularity as to retain the support of a majority of the electorate, and to remain, in survey after survey after survey, by far the favored choice for prime minister. Netanyahu previously respected the independence of Israel’s judiciary, knowing that in an Israel with no constitution, no bill of rights, a parliament that a homogeneous coalition can utterly dominate, and no term limits on its leaders, a robust and effective judiciary is a vital brake on government excess and abuseHe did not shrink from the use of force, but he was no military adventurer.Though advocating at least partial annexation of the West Bank — some 30 percent, including the Israeli settlements and the Jordan Valley — he froze that plan when it became clear the Trump administration would not support it. The coalition whose agreements he is now finalizing, the ministers he is about to elevate to powerful office, and the agenda he is setting and enabling, are impossible to reconcile with his latest assurances, and break faith with so many of the principles at the core of his military and political careers.He is the ex-Sayeret Matkal (IDF special reconnaissance unit) officer preparing to entrust a new, expanded National Security Ministry to an inflammatory upstart whose main security and police expertise is as a criminal convict. He is the commander-in-chief who contemplated giving an expansionist idealogue and terrorism suspect the ultra-sensitive Defense portfolio. He’s the secular Jew sending Israel down the road to theocracy at the urgings of ultra-Orthodox and hardline Religious Zionist proponents. He’s the declared democrat readying to dismantle the pillars of democracy with an override clause that neuters our judiciary. And that’s a radical “reform” he doesn’t even clearly need in order to complete his coalition (the justices are unlikely to intervene if the law is changed to enable Shas’s Aryeh Deri to return as a minister despite his suspended jail term) or to escape his trial (the justices would be unlikely to intervene if, as they intend to, his colleagues abolish the charge of “fraud and breach of trust” at the heart of all three cases against him).
What Netanyahu is concocting is not the “normal” preparation for a new government, with leaders and an agenda at odds with the preceding, defeated coalition. It is, rather, a recipe for an unrecognizable Israel — more internally divided; much less democratic; more religiously intolerant; more male-dominated; its “people’s army” no longer as consensual and above politics; self-defeating in its potential policies regarding the Palestinians, and at odds with much of Diaspora Jewry. It is a recipe for a self-defeating Israel which, if carried through to its full potential excesses — and I stress if — risks rendering the country unsustainable as it descends into internal discord, deepening regional friction, fraying international support, and mounting diplomatic, economic and military pressure.All of this is frankly unfathomable. Yet it is unfolding before our very eyes. Only Netanyahu can prevent it. Yet it is Netanyahu who is choosing to hatch it.

The drop-in held its grand opening in late November and plans to offer weekly social activities like arts and crafts, sports, games, workshops and themed discussions. (Francis Ferland/CBC)-A new Ottawa drop-in centre for two-spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (2SLGBTQ) Inuit youth is hoping to provide a safe space for urban Inuit to reclaim their identities.Arsaniq, which means northern lights in Inuktitut, is a place where community members can access services and get to know other Inuit youth in the Ottawa area."We all have different teachings about the northern lights … but one thing we all agreed on is that they're very beautiful and vibrant, just like queer identities," said Mikka Komaksiutiksak, one of the staff members at the centre.The centre, created by non-profit Tungasuvvingat Inuit, held its grand opening in late November and is offering weekly social activities such as arts and crafts, sports, games, workshops and themed discussions.The centre's programs will serve two different groups for youth aged 12 to 18 years old and age 19 to 25. The location of the centre is being kept confidential from the general public for safety reasons.Katia d'Argencourt, a staff member who grew up in Iqaluit and moved to Ottawa last year, explained that colonization and residential schools in Canada "introduced the idea that being queer and two-spirited is taboo." "That is not so. Jerusalem is set to extend fast train services to and from Tel Aviv into the capital with plans to deliver two more stations in central Jerusalem, in addition to the Yitzhak Navon train station inaugurated in 2019.The new stations are expected to begin services by 2030, after the National Committee for the Planning and Construction of National Infrastructures gave its initial approval for the project this week, according to reports in the Hebrew-language media, and has invited comments from the relevant local committees and from the public.At the moment, the train track to and from Jerusalem starts and ends at Navon station near the Chords Bridge at the western entrance to the city, in the area known as the Jerusalem Gateway where significant new development is planned in the coming years.The extended service will reach a new station, Jerusalem Central, at the intersection of Jaffa and King George streets, and terminate at a station near the Khan Theater on David Remez Street. A rail station was located there as part of the Jaffa-Jerusalem railway service in 1892, but it was closed in 1998 and re-opened as Hatahana Harishona (the First Station), which has been used as a cultural venue since 2013.The extended service will also offer better connections with the light rail (both blue and red lines) and the planned cable car to the Old City.Services will gradually increase from two or three trains an hour (and one train an hour through the night) in each direction to about 13 trains an hour between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem by 2040, Channel 12 reported Tuesday.The extension is budgeted at NIS 4.7 billion ($1.4 billion), with work expected to start in 2024. The Biden administration’s new envoy to the Palestinians declared Wednesday that the US still plans to reopen its consulate in Jerusalem after nearly two years of delays, but Israeli and Palestinian officials did not appear convinced.Asked for his response to US Special Representative for Palestinian Affairs Hady Amr’s renewed pledge, a senior Palestinian official speaking on condition of anonymity chuckled. “At this point, we don’t get excited over these kinds of declarations from the Americans,” he said. “With all due respect, we’ll respond when there are facts on the ground.”Prime minister-designate Benjamin Netanyahu’s office has avoided commenting on Amr’s remarks, ostensibly waiting until he is sworn into office, but an official in the Likud leader’s inner circle told The Times of Israel that his boss’s position on the matter has not changed, confirming a report in the Makor Rishon news site.After vowing during the campaign to reopen the de facto mission to the Palestinians, which his predecessor Donald Trump shuttered in 2019, US President Joe Biden’s Secretary of State Antony Blinken informed Netanyahu in May 2021 that Washington wanted to follow through on the pledge.The then-prime minister responded by voicing his opposition to the proposal. Netanyahu and other opponents to reopening the consulate have argued that it encroaches on Israeli sovereignty in the city — the eastern portion of which the Palestinians claim as the capital of their future state.The Biden administration did not move on the matter following Netanyahu’s refusal. The Israeli Air Force on Thursday said it had returned a fleet of armed drones to service following a crash in southern Israel last month.The drone, an IAI Heron 1, known in the military as Shoval, crashed near the southern city of Arad, causing a fire and leading to the grounding of the entire fleet for the second time in three months.The IAF said it replaced a faulty flight control component in all of the Heron 1 drones, which had apparently caused the crash.“After several repairs and tests… the commander of the Air Force, Maj. Gen. Tomer Bar, decided to return the Shoval to full activity,” the IAF said in a statement.The Heron 1 has seen several crashes due to various malfunctions, including in September, when one crashed into the sea along Israel’s maritime border with Lebanon and was retrieved by the Navy.The Air Force briefly grounded the fleet following that crash.Until recently, talk of Israel’s armed drones was barred from publication by the Military Censor. For years the Israel Defense Forces would not confirm it uses armed drones, and Israeli journalists who attempted to report on it came up against the IDF censor.The IDF says that drones make up about 80% of the total operational flight hours in the Air Force. Israel has not disclosed how many attack drones it has.

Security officials are concerned that terror groups in the Gaza Strip could launch rockets at Israel after two senior terrorists were killed in overnight clashes in the West Bank, including a top Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) field commander, Hebrew media reported Thursday.The two fighters were killed in heavy clashes with Israeli troops that broke out during a predawn arrest raid near the northern West Bank’s Jenin refugee camp. Palestinian media reported that as many as 20 other people were wounded.Both PIJ and the Hamas terror group that rules the Gaza Strip threatened to hit back over the deaths.Palestinian Islamic Jihad spokesman Tariq Ezz El Din said in a statement that the “massacre” of people and deaths of its fighters in Jenin “will not pass without a response.”Hamas declared a general strike in the camp and also threatened to take action.Both the Kan public broadcaster and Channel 13 quoted unnamed security officials saying that Israel was preparing for the possibility of rocket fire.The dead were identified as Mohammed Ayman Saadi from PIJ and Na’im Zubeidi from the Fatah-linked al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, though the various armed factions are known to work together in Jenin against the IDF.Over the past year, the PIJ has launched rockets at Israel in response to members being killed or arrested in the West Bank.Earlier this month, the IDF bombed targets in the Gaza Strip in response to four rockets that were fired at Israel. That rocket fire came hours after a PIJ  commander Farouk Salameh was killed during an Israeli military operation in  Jenin.In August, Israel clashed with PIJ in a three-day battle during which the terror group launched some 1,175 rockets at Israeli territory. Fighting erupted after Israel launched strikes on PIJ targets in Gaza in response to what Israeli leaders said was an ongoing “concrete” threat to target Israeli civilians and soldiers in Gaza-border areas. A senior PIJ commander was killed in the initial strikes.In a joint statement about Thursday’s early-morning raid, the IDF and Shin Bet security agency said that Saadi and Zubeidi were senior terror operatives. Both of the killed gunmen were in their 20s but had already served time in Israeli jails for security offenses.Saadi was a “prominent PIJ military operative” responsible for a series of shooting attacks against troops, and arming other operatives, under the directions of the PIJ leadership, the statement said.The statement said Zubeidi was also responsible for numerous shootings at Israeli forces in the West Bank.
