The first blatant anti-Israel offense came in 2014, when she became the first European Union foreign minister to recognize the state of Palestine.After the horrifying terror attacks in Paris last November, she came out with a statement linking Islamic anger to the lack of a two-state solution. Even worse, after months of terror in which Palestinians were attacking Israelis in the streets on an almost daily basis, she accused Israel in January of carrying out “extrajudicial executions”.Israel reacted through diplomatic channels, but a more powerful force stepped in. Three days after Wallström accused Israel of executing Palestinians, it was revealed that she had jumped to the head of an eight-year waiting list for apartments owned by a labor union. Stockholm is suffering from a serious shortage of housing and this was viewed by the Swedish public as an egregious misuse of her position. Anti-corruption prosecutors are investigating the case now to determine if it constitutes bribery, which carries a potential two-year prison term.This type of instant karma is the rule and not the exception when it comes to politicians that treat Israel badly. When did “separate but equal” become the goal of any civil rights movement? When were civil rights leaders ever proud of trading one group’s rights for another? When did Robinson’s Arch magically become “the Kotel”? Sunday. That’s the day. On Sunday, the State of Israel, via the Prime Minister’s cabinet, blessed the creation of an enhanced egalitarian prayer plaza at Robinson’s Arch.An enhanced prayer plaza at Robinson’s Arch is an important advancement. Control of that plaza by Progressive Judaism is a victory. Funding from the State of Israel — if it comes from the State — would be another.-At what cost?-The deal plays into the hands of the Haredi extreme by moving women’s prayer away from the Kotel. With the consent of the Reform and Conservative Movements, it legitimizes Haredi governance there. The cost is simply too high. Some observations: Proponents say that the deal represents critical political acceptance of non-Orthodox Judaism in Israel. Here’s the rub: it comes with accepting ultra-Orthodox rule over a national historic site. The Kotel shouldn’t be run by the Western Wall Heritage Foundation, which the deal concedes. We’ll rue the day Progressive Judaism agreed to let a public treasure be controlled by the Haredi establishment.There’s already an egalitarian prayer plaza near the Kotel. The enhanced space will be in the same spot, Robinson’s Arch, an archaeological park once declared unacceptable by those touting this deal. The enhanced plaza will share an entrance with the main Kotel plaza, but it’s behind the Mughrabi Bridge, separate and segregated. When did segregation — when did ‘separate but equal’ — become the goal of any civil rights movement? Progressive Orthodox women are the losers. Robinson’s Arch has not been the focal point of our prayers for 2,000 years.Robinson’s Arch has its own special beauty. I’ve heard Eicha read there on Tisha B’Av for the past two years. A newly-stated goal of WOW, making Robinson’s Arch into the new Kotel for a new age, is also beautiful. To be clear, I support the concept of a prayer plaza at Robinson’s Arch. In this deal, however, the cost is too high.When it’s done, women’s voices in prayer and Torah at the Kotel will never be heard there again. Silencing women has been the goal of Rabbi Shmuel Rabinovitch, administrator of the site, who declared that women will not be allowed to wear tallit and tefillin at the Kotel. We’ve become a willing partner in his tyranny.-Timing is everything-This has been a hard fight. Feminist proponents and opponents of this deal — women and men who’ve championed women’s rights at the Kotel — have been harassed, threatened and arrested. We’ve earned a right to our opinions the hard way.I know these struggles first hand. I’ve been shoved, egged, kicked and called a Nazi in my years as a WOW supporter here. When I helped pass a Sefer Torah to WOW in April 2015, I was physically brutalized while defending the women’s Torah reading.It’s been a stalemate at the Kotel for the past few years, a stalemate that favored Rabinovitch. Why should he budge? Why now? It turns out that January 29 — the day pre-publicity for the deal appeared in the press — was the deadline for the State to respond to a private civil case asking the Supreme Court to enforce previous rulings giving women the right to pray with tallit, tefillin and Torah at the Kotel. As the deal was announced, the State was granted a one-month delay in responding. After three years of negotiations, what are the odds that undermining this case was part of the government’s incentive to concluded a deal now? What’s at stake is American Reform and Conservative Jewish leadership gaining a voice in the religious politic of Israel. Sidelined as irrelevant throughout the history of the State, the real victory was being invited to the table. That’s huge. Proponents see this deal as a watershed moment in both Israeli consciousness and governmental policy toward Progressive Judaism.It’s hard to fathom that giving up our claim to the Kotel is anything but reckless and optimistic.-Bye-bye, non-Jewish Jews-From a Haredi point of view, we went to the back of the bus. Women have been silenced. The non-Jewish Jews willingly left the Kotel plaza. They’ll continue to believe that they can harass us out of the public sphere. We just agreed to let them do it.Sunday may well go down in history as the day the split between Haredi and Progressive Judaism was officially sanctioned and enshrined in Israeli policy. A “Church of England” moment. Perhaps more fittingly: the division of Judaism into Northern and Southern Kingdoms.It may be remembered as the day that Progressive Judaism sanctioned Haredi Judaism as the official religion of the Jewish state, yielding control of a national historic site to ultra-Orthodoxy.The spin, however, is about forgetting.When the hype ends, when women are silenced at the Kotel, after we’ve given away a national treasure, what we’re supposed to forget is clear: this isn’t what we were fighting for in the first place.We were fighting for the Kotel.

The symbol, from ancient Sanskrit, means happiness and prosperity. It has been used for centuries by Hindus and Buddhists, and has turned up in archaeological digs in Europe. But many Western tourists associate it with anti-Semitism and the Holocaust because the emblem was adopted by Nazi Germany to try to enhance a sense of ancient lineage.The swastika in Japan — which usually points counter-clockwise, the reverse of the Nazi symbol — has been used for centuries in Buddhist decorations and to denote Buddhist temples on maps.At Sensoji Temple, a top tourist destination in Tokyo, a big gold “manji” emblem appears on a pair of lotus-shaped bronze ornaments, while smaller, more subtle ones decorate roof tiles. It’s even an official emblem for Hirosaki, a city in northern Japan.In a report released last month, a government panel at the Geospatial Information Authority proposed a three-tiered pagoda symbol to replace the swastika. Progressive.Thursday night’s Democratic debate was dominated by one word and a fight between two candidates about what “progressive” means and who best represents its definition.Over the course of two hours, the word “progressive” was uttered by the two Democratic presidential hopefuls 19 times. Hillary Clinton far outscored Bernie Sanders in number of uses, 16 to 3, according to a Yahoo News review of a transcript of the debate.In one answer early on, Clinton used the word “progressive” nine times.“I am a progressive who gets things done. And the root of that word, progressive is ‘progress.’ But I’ve heard Sen. Sanders’ comments, and it’s really caused me to wonder who’s left in the progressive wing of the Democratic Party. Under his definition, President Obama is not progressive because he took donations from Wall Street; Vice President Biden is not progressive because he supported Keystone,” Clinton said immediately before giving a shout-out to New Hampshire’s Democratic senator. “Sen. [Jeanne] Shaheen is not progressive because she supports the trade pact.“Even the late, great Sen. Paul Wellstone would not fit this definition,” she added, invoking the Defense of Marriage Act, “because he voted for DOMA.“You know, we have differences and, honestly, I think we should be talking about what we want to do for the country. But if we’re going to get into labels, I don’t think it was particularly progressive to vote against the Brady Bill five times,” Clinton continued. “I don’t think it was progressive to vote to give gun makers and sellers immunity. Ben Carson also managed to pull in three delegates, putting him ahead of most of the Republicans, including Jeb Bush and Rand Paul, who each only secured one delegate a piece.At this point in time, all of the Republican candidates are tossing verbal mud at each other, which is not unusual for this portion of any American election cycle. As time passes, one winner will emerge, and then it will be time to forgive and forget. Assuming the Iowa results are an indicator for the future, it’s possible that Ted Cruz’s vice president pick may come from one of the major runner-ups in the field.In the fall, Laura Ingraham asked about Donald Trump’s vice presidental pick, and it seemed almost certain that a Trump/Cruz ticket would emerge since he responded, “Ted Cruz is now agreeing with me 100 percent… I like him. He’s backed everything I’ve said.” According to the Hill, the two Republicans do seem fairly compatible, since their positions on illegal immigration, Mexican border security, the Iran nuclear deal, and other issues are largely the same.At the same time, Trump admitted that “we’ll have to go to war” if Cruz’s polls and delegate results began to catch up with Trump’s then-leading position. With war declared, the recent mud-slinging has included Trump calling Cruz a “total liar” since a recent Cruz ad claimed a “vote for Donald Trump is a vote for Obamacare.”“Look, Ted Cruz is a total liar. I’ve been saying it for two years in my speeches, I’m going to repeal and replace Obamacare,” Trump said, according to ABC. “I don’t even know where he gets this.”Trump’s attacks have even included calling Cruz an “anchor baby” over the whole birther scandal, which took the election bickering to a whole new low.Was the inevitable fallout between the leading Republicans enough to remove Trump as a potential choice for Ted Cruz’s vice president pick? It’s too early to say, but in the past Cruz has suggested Trump could help him with trade negotiations and be put in charge of constructing the planned Mexican border wall. Cruz hasn’t specified whether Trump would fulfill these responsibilities as VP or as part of Cruz’s administration, but the opportunity remains.Based upon the Iowa results, the second VP possibility is Marco Rubio. Ted Cruz has not discussed Rubio as a potential vice president pick yet, but he has stated that he would “of course” put Rubio in a cabinet position within his administration.“Marco is a very, very talented leader. He’s a friend of mine, he’s charming, he’s an incredible communicator,” Cruz said back in December, according to the New York Daily News.Rubio, on the other hand, did not reciprocate the compliments and went on the attack, so it’s hard to say whether he would be open to considering a VP offer on a Cruz/Rubio ticket.In November, Rubio also made it clear that his VP brainstorming did not include Cruz. Instead, Marco Rubio’s vice president choice would be Republican New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez, which would help with both Latino and female voters. Both men hold their Christian values in high regard, so it could be argued they would compliment each other as running mates. Reuters reported that socially conservative Republicans “have their eye on Senator Ted Cruz of Texas for the party’s presidential nod and former neurosurgeon Ben Carson for the Republican vice presidential nominee.” They would also have the potential to draw a diverse set of demographics since Cruz is half-Cuban and Carson is African American.The retired doctor rose to popularity years ago based upon his comments about Obamacare, but his lack of political experience, and his willingness to speak frankly about hot button issues like homosexuality, has caused him to go from front-runner to fourth place. Conservative website Human Events claims Carson’s lack of experience holds him back from being POTUS, but they also argue Carson would be the best option for vice president, since “droves” of evangelical Christians would be excited to support him. “Despite his lack of political know-how, Carson has a lot to offer on a presidential ticket—just not at the very top of it. Carson has an incredible personal narrative much of the nation will admire and relate to. He’s perhaps the only candidate on the Republican ticket in the past 30 years or more who can walk into devastated urban environments such as Detroit, Carson’s hometown, and deliver a message of hope and prosperity. Republican presidential candidate Carly Fiorina harshly criticized the political system as rigged after she was cut from Saturday night’s debate.Despite outperforming Ohio Gov. John Kasich and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie in Iowa, Fiorina will be the only major candidate not onstage in Manchester, N.H. — something the former Hewlett-Packard CEO clearly took issue with.“I’ve been telling you the game is rigged. And here’s even more proof: The people of Iowa voted in an election this week, and I beat the establishment’s guys,” she said in a statement on her Facebook page Friday. “Tens of thousands of you stood with us yesterday to demand a fair debate. But Disney’s ABC and the RNC have decided to keep me off the debate stage this weekend, caving to pressure from the same establishment candidates we beat who are afraid to debate me.”To qualify for the debate, candidates had to place in the top three in Iowa or in the top six on average in recent New Hampshire or national polls. The network, which is not hosting an undercard debate, revealed its final lineup on Thursday: Kasich, Christie, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, businessman Donald Trump, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, and retired doctor Ben Carson.“This isn’t about me. It’s about you. It’s about the people of New Hampshire who are about to vote,” Fiorina continued. “This is emblematic of the power that is being taken away from you every day — by the political class, the media establishment, and the bureaucracy. They don’t want your votes to count. They don’t want your voice to be heard. The network of George Stephanopoulos wants to tell you to sit down and shut up and elect Hillary Clinton.”The reference to ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos is undoubtedly meant to evoke his failure to disclose contributions to the Clinton Foundation in recent years. Many viewers saw a conflict of interest because he had been reporting on the Clintons and their foundation without mentioning his support.According to Fiorina, keeping her off the debate stage is just the latest example of media bias for establishment candidates.“Well, guess what? ABC and the RNC and other candidates may keep me off that stage. But I will not be silenced. Our government is broken, and we know the establishment isn’t going to fix it. It’s time to stand together and say we won’t back down.”Major Republican figures spoke out against Fiorina’s exclusion from the debate. She thanked rival Cruz for “standing for the fair debate the American people deserve.”“Hey @ABC: put @CarlyFiorina on the debate stage! She got more Iowa votes than John and Chris. Donald Trump’s presidential campaign took a beating in Iowa earlier this week, but his bruised ego should be healing nicely with the news that the real estate tycoon has apparently been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. During his bid for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination so far, Trump’s foreign policy platform has included promises to build a wall between the U.S. and Mexico, crack down on trade with China and “bomb the s*** out of ISIS,” as well as a proposed ban on all Muslim travel to the U.S.The latter, in particular, has earned Trump international scorn. And yet, the AFP reported Monday that the belligerent billionaire is being considered for the most prestigious international accolade, alongside the likes of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, American whistleblower Edward Snowden, Pope Francis and residents of the Greek islands who have welcomed thousands of refugees to their shores.The AFP report cites Kristian Berg Harpviken, director of Oslo’s Peace Research Institute and avid Nobel watcher, who said he’d received a copy of Trump’s nomination letter. Harpviken has declined to reveal the name of the person who submitted Trump for the Nobel Committee’s consideration, but he wrote on the Peace Research Institute’s website that he’d confirmed the nomination with the letter’s U.S. author, who wrote that Trump should get the prize for “his vigorous peace through strength ideology, used as a threat weapon of deterrence against radical Islam, ISIS, nuclear Iran and Communist China.” Harpvikan told the U.K.’s Telegraph that he received a copy of the letter from the anonymous nominator himself and that “the nominator has a position which gives him the right to nominate, and that I consider it valid.” According to the Nobel Foundation rules, qualified nominators for Peace Prize contenders include government officials, professors, directors of foreign policy institutes and peace research organizations, former Nobel laureates, members of international courts and members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee. Though Harpvikan said he has “committed not to reveal the identity of the nominator,” the Telegraph suggested it was probably a U.S. politician who put Trump’s name in the running. It is the Norwegian Nobel Committee’s policy to keep the official nominee list a secret, which is why Olav Njølstad, director of the Norwegian Nobel Institute, told Newsweek he could “neither confirm nor disconfirm” Trump’s nomination. Those who nominate, however, are free to disclose their picks. Harpvikan’s organization publishes an annual list of confirmed Nobel nominees as well as a shortlist for potential winners.That list does not include Trump, who will likely join the list of history’s most unexpected Nobel nominees, which includes Russian President Vladimir Putin, Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin and Nazi leader Adolf Hitler.

NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nevada (Reuters) - The U.S. Air Force will deploy four Lockheed Martin Corp F-35 fighter jets to a different U.S. air base this month as it assesses whether the new warplane can be declared combat-ready by August as planned, a senior officer told Reuters on Thursday.Major General Jay Silveria, who heads the U.S. Air Force Warfare Center at Nellis Air Force Base, said the F-35 jets would be sent from the Nevada base to Mountain Home Air Force Base in southwestern Idaho later this month.The deployment would include pilots, mechanics, spare parts, equipment and the plane's computerized logistics system to test the ability to deploy the plane for combat, he said.The test would help the Air Force assess its ability to send the jets to other locations and ensure that they can be repaired and maintained, Silveria said."What we’re trying to do is exercise the deployment concepts and to learn from maintenance and learn from (operations)," Silveria said.Like any warplane, maintenance of the F-35 requires specialized tools and materials, and it was critical that all those tools travel with the jet when it deployed, he said.Silveria said the test deployment was part of an assessment of whether an initial squadron of F-35 jets was ready for combat. He said the warfare center was due to deliver that "operational readiness assessment" to General Hawk Carlisle, head of Air Combat Command, in July.Carlisle would use the assessment to help decide whether an initial squadron of F-35A fighter jets was ready for combat.Silveria, a pilot who also flies the F-35, said the 12 F-35s based at Nellis Air Force Base were performing well in regular exercises with other aircraft, and had proven their ability to share data and communicate with fourth-generation jets.He said the jets were now also able to share data within a formation of four F-35 jets flying together - a capability he experienced during a flight in the past week.The Air Force hoped to declare that it had an "initial operational capability" of F-35s between August and December.The U.S. Marine Corps declared an initial squadron of 10 of its F-35B model jets ready for combat last July.
