Are you at home?”Since the Israel-Hamas war broke out more than three months ago, residents of southern Lebanon have been receiving strange phone calls from Lebanese numbers and from people speaking in Lebanese accents.The voices on the other end may claim to be conducting a survey, distributing aid or calling from a public body.But the callers ask about families and their whereabouts, just before towns or homes come under Israeli attack, residents told AFP.Lebanese security officials and the Iran-backed Hezbollah terrorist organization, part of the “axis of resistance” network of Iran proxies that also includes Hamas, believe the strange calls are in fact from Israelis.Last week, Umm Hussein, who is in her 70s and originally from the southern Lebanon village of Khiam, received a call from “the bank” asking her to come and collect some money at the nearby branch.But according to her grandson Hassan Shukeir, Umm Hussein doesn’t even have a bank account.“They asked her if she was in Khiam, and the call ended when she said she was in Beirut,” Shukeir told AFP.Shortly after the call was terminated, an Israeli strike targeted the house next to hers in the village, the grandson said.Since October 8, a day after the deadly Hamas attacks on southern Israel, Hezbollah has engaged in cross-border fire on a near-daily basis, launching rockets, drones and missiles at northern Israel in a campaign it says is in support of Hamas. Israel, meanwhile, has indicated it would be willing to wage war on Hezbollah if necessary.As Israel has carried out regular strikes on Hezbollah targets in south Lebanon, the group has told residents of villages in the south not to divulge any information to people calling from Lebanese numbers they do not recognize.“The enemy exploits such information to try to ensure the presence of our brother fighters in houses it intends to target,” Hezbollah said in a statement.A Lebanese security source told AFP that army intelligence and the police were investigating the calls which they believe originated in Israel, meaning Lebanon’s communications network has been compromised.The source, who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media, said Israel has used this tactic before to target Hezbollah members holed up in homes.In one case on November 22, a strike hit a house in the village of Beit Yahun, killing five Hezbollah members, including the son of Mohammed Raad, who heads the group’s bloc in parliament.Shortly before that attack, an unknown caller had asked the owner of the house whether she and her family were at home, the security source said.A spokeswoman for the Israeli military told AFP she was “unable to answer that question,” when asked if Israel was behind the phone calls.According to Hezbollah, Israel has also hacked into security surveillance cameras at homes and businesses in border villages.In December, it said Israel was using this access to target its members, and urged Lebanese citizens to “disconnect the private cameras… from the internet.”Hezbollah said Israel had hacked the cameras to gain visibility after the group’s cross-border attacks had “targeted most of the cameras” that Israel itself had installed near the border.One resident, who asked to remain anonymous for security reasons, told AFP a local Hezbollah official called him recently and demanded he turn off and disconnect CCTV cameras installed around his house.He complied with the demand.The security source said three men had been arrested recently on suspicion of working with Israel-affiliated companies. The European Union has adopted a dedicated sanctions regime targeting Palestinian terror group Hamas, a high-ranking EU official said Friday, adding that the first measures would target six people involved in the financing of Hamas.“What we are doing now — it has been done today and I think it will be announced in the coming hours — [is that] we have adopted a dedicated regime for Hamas. We have listed six people,” said the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.The official added the six people were all from Arab or African countries and were all involved in financing Hamas, which has become the subject of Western reprisal after its assault on Israel in October.At the same time, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said that Israel had financed Hamas “in an attempt to weaken the Palestinian Authority led by Fatah,”Netanyahu is widely reported to have said on several occasions over the years that he sought to boost Hamas in order to fuel the schism within Palestinian society and alleviate international pressure for a Palestinian state.Netanyahu has denied any such efforts.“Yes, Hamas was financed by the government of Israel in an attempt to weaken the Palestinian Authority led by Fatah,” Borrell said in a speech at the University of Valladolid in Spain, without elaborating.Borrell added the only peaceful solution included the creation of a Palestinian state. WASHINGTON (JTA) — Fifteen Jewish Democrats, including some pro-Israel stalwarts, slammed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after he rejected the idea of creating an independent Palestinian state after the Israel-Hamas war.“We strongly disagree with the prime minister,” said the brief statement released Friday morning by the office of Representative Jerry Nadler, the New York representative who is the unofficial dean of Jewish House Democrats. “A two-state solution is the path forward.”The statement — which comes amid rising calls from some Jewish lawmakers for a ceasefire — signifies growing impatience among Democrats with Netanyahu as the war persists indefinitely. The prime minister, who heads a coalition with far-right elements, has openly rejected the Biden administration’s hopes of forging a postwar two-state outcome.In a press conference Thursday, Netanyahu used unusually clear language in opposing Biden administration initiatives.“Therefore, I make clear in any future foreseeable arrangement — with an agreement or without an agreement — the State of Israel must have security control of the entire area west of the Jordan,” he said, referring to the area that covers Israel, the West Bank and Gaza. “It’s a necessary requirement, and it clashes with the idea of sovereignty, what can you do?”He continued: “This truth I tell our American friends. He and other experts spoke on a panel titled Preparing for Disease X.Disease X is a placeholder name for an unknown virus that could infect humans in the future that experts believe could kill as many as 50 million people.Shyam Bishen, Head of the Centre for Health and Healthcare at the WEF, opened the event by saying: "How do we prepare for the next emergency?"How do we prepare our health system overall for the next pandemic? We all know very well there will be viruses, there will be pathogens, there will be outbreaks. The idea is how do we prepare to contain those? How do we prevent outbreaks from becoming full-blown pandemics?"During the event, Mr Ghebreyesus urged leaders around the world to back the WHO Pandemic Preparedness Treaty – launched in 2021 to try and reach international consensus on how to deal with the next pandemic.Mr Ghebreyesus said: "[The] key to being better prepared and to address Disease X is the pandemic agreement. It can bring all the experience, all the challenges we faced and all the solutions into one. This is about a common enemy. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced today the approval of Ervebo, the first FDA-approved vaccine for the prevention of Ebola virus disease (EVD), caused by Zaire ebolavirus in individuals 18 years of age and older. Cases of EVD are very rare in the U.S., and those that have occurred have been the result of infections acquired by individuals in other countries who then traveled to the U.S., or health care workers who became ill after treating patients with EVD.“While the risk of Ebola virus disease in the U.S. remains low, the U.S. government remains deeply committed to fighting devastating Ebola outbreaks in Africa, including the current outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo,” said Anna Abram, FDA Deputy Commissioner for Policy, Legislation, and International Affairs. “Today’s approval is an important step in our continuing efforts to fight Ebola in close coordination with our partners across the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, as well as our international partners, such as the World Health Organization. These efforts, including today’s landmark approval, reflect the FDA’s unwavering dedication to leveraging our expertise to facilitate the development and availability of safe and effective medical products to address urgent public health needs and fight infectious diseases, as part of our vital public health mission.”EVD is contagious and is transmitted through direct contact with blood, body fluids and tissues of infected wild animals or people, as well as with surfaces and materials, such as bedding and clothing, contaminated with these fluids. Onset of symptoms of EVD can be sudden and can include fever, fatigue, muscle pain, headache and sore throat. This is followed by vomiting, diarrhea, rash, impaired kidney and liver function and in some cases internal and external bleeding. EVD has an incubation period that ranges from 2 to 21 days. Individuals who provide care for people with EVD, including health care workers who do not use correct infection control precautions, are at the highest risk for infection.Confirmed outbreaks of EVD have been documented since the 1970s, primarily in areas of sub-Saharan Africa, where scientists believe the virus is always present at low levels in certain infected wild animals. On rare occasions, people become sick with EVD after coming into direct contact with infected animals, which can then lead to EVD outbreaks when the virus spreads between people.An outbreak in three West African countries (Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone) from 2014 to 2016 resulted in more than 28,000 cases of EVD and more than 11,000 deaths that were caused by Zaire ebolavirus.The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is currently experiencing the world’s second largest EVD outbreak. In 2018, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the DRC began to use Ervebo as an investigational vaccine under an expanded access program to help mitigate this outbreak. With or without vaccination, it is critical to implement appropriate infection control and prevention measures as part of efforts to prevent the spread of EVD.“Ebola virus disease is a rare but severe and often deadly disease that knows no borders. Vaccination is essential to help prevent outbreaks and to stop the Ebola virus from spreading when outbreaks do occur,” said Peter Marks, M.D., Ph.D., director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research. “The FDA’s approval of Ervebo is a major advance in helping to protect against the Zaire ebolavirus as well as advancing U.S. government preparedness efforts. The research approach used to study the effectiveness and safety of this vaccine was precedent-setting during a public health emergency and may help create a model for future studies under similar circumstances. The FDA is committed to continuing our work across the U.S. government and with our international partners to prevent future Ebola outbreaks and mitigate the current outbreak in the DRC, reflecting our nation’s commitment to preparing for and responding to biological threats, like Ebola.”The approval of Ervebo is supported by a study conducted in Guinea during the 2014-2016 outbreak in individuals 18 years of age and older. The study was a randomized cluster (ring) vaccination study in which 3,537 contacts and contacts of contacts of individuals with laboratory-confirmed EVD received either “immediate” or 21-day “delayed” vaccination with Ervebo. This noteworthy design was intended to capture a social network of individuals and locations that might include dwellings or workplaces where a patient spent time while symptomatic, or the households of individuals who had contact with the patient during that person’s illness or death. In a comparison of cases of EVD among 2,108 individuals in the “immediate” vaccination arm and 1,429 individuals in the “delayed” vaccination arm, Ervebo was determined to be 100% effective in preventing Ebola cases with symptom onset greater than 10 days after vaccination. No cases of EVD with symptom onset greater than 10 days after vaccination were observed in the “immediate” cluster group, compared with 10 cases of EVD in the 21-day “delayed” cluster group.In additional studies, antibody responses to Ervebo were assessed in 477 individuals in Liberia, approximately 500 individuals in Sierra Leone and approximately 900 individuals in Canada, Spain and the U.S. The antibody responses among those in the study conducted in Canada, Spain and the U.S. were similar to those among individuals in the studies conducted in Liberia and Sierra Leone. The safety of Ervebo was assessed in approximately 15,000 individuals in Africa, Europe and North America. The most commonly reported side effects were pain, swelling and redness at the injection site, as well as headache, fever, joint and muscle aches and fatigue.Ervebo is administered as a single-dose injection, and is a live, attenuated vaccine that has been genetically engineered to contain a protein from the Zaire ebolavirus.The FDA granted this application Priority Review and a Tropical Disease Priority Review Voucher under a program intended to encourage development of new drugs and biologics for the prevention and treatment of certain tropical diseases. The FDA also granted Breakthrough Therapy designation for Ervebo to facilitate the development and scientific evaluation of the vaccine. Because of the public health importance of a vaccine to prevent EVD, the FDA worked closely with the company and completed its evaluation of the safety and effectiveness of Ervebo in less than six months.The approval was granted to Merck & Co., Inc.The FDA, an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, protects the public health by assuring the safety, effectiveness, and security of human and veterinary drugs, vaccines and other biological products for human use, and medical devices. The agency also is responsible for the safety and security of our nation’s food supply, cosmetics, dietary supplements, products that give off electronic radiation, and for regulating tobacco products.

TREATMENT OF EBOLA
Supportive care - rehydration with oral or intravenous fluids - and treatment of specific symptoms improves survival. A range of potential treatments including blood products, immune therapies and drug therapies are currently being evaluated. In the 2018-2020 Ebola outbreak in DRC, the first-ever multi-drug randomized control trial was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of drugs used in the treatment of Ebola patients under an ethical framework developed in consultation with experts in the field and the DRC.Two monoclonal antibodies (Inmazeb and Ebanga) were approved for the treatment of Zaire ebolavirus (Ebolavirus) infection in adults and children by the US Food and Drug Administration in late 2020.  The Ervebo vaccine has been shown to be effective in protecting people from the species Zaire ebolavirus, and is recommended by the Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization as part of a broader set of Ebola outbreak response tools. In December 2020, the vaccine was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration and prequalified by WHO for use in individuals 18 years of age and older (except for pregnant and breastfeeding women) for protection against Ebola virus disease caused by Zaïre Ebola virus. In May 2020, the European Medicines Agency recommended granting marketing authorization for a 2-component vaccine called Zabdeno-and-Mvabea for individuals 1 year and older. The vaccine is delivered in 2 doses: Zabdeno is administered first and Mvabea is given approximately 8 weeks later as a second dose. This prophylactic 2-dose regimen is therefore not suitable for an outbreak response where immediate protection is necessary.
