Iraq militants take Syria-border post in drive for caliphate

ANBAR, IRAQ(Reuters) - Sunni fighters seized a border post on the Iraq-Syria frontier, security sources said on Saturday, smashing a line drawn by colonial powers almost a century ago with the aim of creating an Islamic Caliphate stretching from the Mediterranean Sea to Iran.The militants, led by the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), first moved into the nearby town of al-Qaim on Friday, pushing out security forces, the sources said.Once border guards heard that al-Qaim had fallen, they left their posts and militants moved in, the sources said.Sameer al-Shwiali, media adviser to the commander of Iraq's anti-terrorist squad, told Reuters that the Iraqi army was still in control of al-Qaim.Al-Qaim and its neighbouring Syrian counterpart Albukamal are on a strategic supply route. A three-year civil war in Syria has left most of eastern Syria in the hands of Sunni militants, including the Albukamal-Qaim crossing.The Albukamal gate is run by al Qaeda's official Syria branch, the Nusra Front, which has clashed with ISIL but has also agreed to localised truces when it suits both sides.The head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group, Rami Abdulrahman, said ISIL has pushed the Nusra Front out from many areas of eastern Syria in the past few days and their capture of al-Qaim will allow them to quickly move to the Syrian side.ISIL already controls territory around the Abukamal gate, effectively pinching the Nusra Front between its forces in Syria and those in neighbouring Iraq, said Abdulrahman, who tracks the violence.The al Qaeda off-shoot has captured swathes of territory in northwest and central Iraq, including the second city, Mosul. They have seized large amounts of weaponry from the fleeing Iraqi army and looted banks.World powers are deadlocked over the crises in Iraq and Syria. SHI'ITES MOBILISE
The fighting has divided Iraq along sectarian lines. The Kurds have expanded their zone in the northeast to include the oil city of Kirkuk, which they regard as part of Kurdistan, while Sunnis have taken ground in the west.The government has mobilised Shi'ite militia to send volunteers to the front lines.In Baghdad's Shi'ite slum of Sadr City, thousands of fighters wearing military fatigues marched through the streets.They carried rocket-propelled grenades, semi-automatic rifles and trucks had mounted long-range rockets, including the new 3-metre “Muqtada 1” missile, named after Shi'ite cleric Muqtada Sadr, who has tens of thousands of followers.Sadr has yet to throw his fighters into the recent wave of fighting but has criticised Maliki for mishandling the crisis."These brigades are sending a message of peace. More than 70 terrorists were killed and more than 15 vehicles were destroyed,” said Major-General Qassim al-Moussawi, spokesman for the Iraqi military's commander-in-chief.He showed aerial footage of cars and people being blown up but details of the fighting could not be independently confirmed.As in Syria, ISIL has started to clash with other Sunni militias in Iraq. In the town of Hawija, ISIL and members of the Naqshbandi Army, made up of former army officers as well as loyalists to Saddam Hussein's Baath party, started fighting on Friday evening, witnesses said.They said the clashes, a power dispute, killed 15 people."Hawija is falling apart," said a senior tribal figure from the community, just days before the clashes. "There are so many groups working with ISIL. Each group has its agenda."In many ways, Hawija was the spark for Iraqi's current armed Sunni insurgency. In April 2013, Sunni protesters said security forces shot at least 50 of them. They were demanding greater rights from the Shi'ite-led government. Rebel attacks on Ukraine forces put ceasefire under pressure

KIEV/DONETSK Ukraine (Reuters) - Pro-Russian separatists attacked Ukrainian posts on the border with Russia and a military base and tried to storm an airforce base overnight into Saturday, government forces said, putting a Ukrainian unilateral ceasefire under pressure.The action came just hours after the start of a ceasefire at 10 p.m. on Friday by Ukrainian forces, ordered by President Petro Poroshenko as part of his plan to end the rebel insurgency in the east of the country.A government forces spokesman said the separatists used mortars and sniper fire to attack Ukrainian posts at Izvareno and Uspenka on the border, wounding nine Ukrainian officers.Rebels with big calibre machine guns and grenade-launchers also attacked a Ukrainian position at Avdiyivka, near the main regional town of Donetsk, and a Ukrainian post at Kreminna.Separatists controlling Slaviansk also attacked Ukrainian forces on Karachun hill overlooking the town with mortars and grenade-launchers, the spokesman, Vladyslav Seleznyov, said."In all these episodes, the attacks of the (rebel) fighters were deflected" without loss, Seleznyov said.Poroshenko announced the week-long ceasefire on Friday night, urging the rebels to lay down their arms and warning that Ukrainian forces would hit back if attacked.Ukrainian forces also repelled two attacks by around 50 heavily-armed fighters in the early morning on an air defence base at Avdiyivka, which houses surface-to-air missiles, the defence ministry said. No Ukrainian personnel were hurt.The rebels, who have seized strategic points in major towns including Donetsk and set up "people's republics", saying they want to join Russia, said Ukraine has broken its own ceasefire.

Alexander Borodai, prime minister of the self-styled Donetsk People's Republic told a news conference the ceasefire was not working and appealed to Russia to send in peacekeeping forces."Since last evening, combat activities are continuing. Poroshenko's artillery is bombing Slaviansk and the air force has made several raids. Words about a ceasefire as always were just that - words," Borodai said."The anti-terrorist operation against the people of the Donbass is in full swing," he said.Pavel Gubarev, a prominent rebel leader, told Rossiya-24 TV channel that either Ukrainian troops were not obeying orders or Poroshenko "is lying", adding: "There is no ceasefire at all,"Poroshenko, installed on June 7 as president after seven months of turmoil in the ex-Soviet republic, ordered government forces to cease firing to allow his 15-point peace plan to take root. The ceasefire ends at 10 p.m. on June 27.The insurgency in the Russian-speaking east erupted in April after street protests in the capital Kiev toppled the Moscow-backed Viktor Yanukovich. Russia subsequently annexed Ukraine's Crimean peninsula.Poroshenko is gearing up for a diplomatic push to sell his plan but his biggest challenge will be to win over Russian President Vladimir Putin. Egypt upholds death sentence on Brotherhood leader, nearly 200 supporters

CAIRO (Reuters) - An Egyptian court confirmed death sentences on Saturday against the leader of the Muslim Brotherhood and 182 supporters, in a mass trial of Islamists who ruled Egypt for a year but face a fierce crackdown under the new president, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.Mohamed Badie and other defendants were charged in connection with violence that erupted in the southern town of Minya following the ousting of the Brotherhood's President Mohamed Mursi last July, led by then army chief Sisi.One police officer was killed in the violence.The court's decision came two months after it referred the case against Badie, general guide of the now outlawed Brotherhood, and 682 other defendants to a top religious authority, the first step to imposing a death penalty.Those preliminary sentences triggered outrage among Western governments and rights groups, with the United States and European Union both saying they were appalled by the rulings.Since Mursi's overthrow, which was followed by protests by his supporters, hundreds of Islamist protesters have been killed and thousands jailed in a crackdown by security forces. Five hundred army and police officers have also been killed.Sisi, who won a presidential election last month, said in the run-up to the vote that the Brotherhood - Egypt's oldest, most organized and successful political group - was finished and would not exist under his rule.Amnesty International described the verdicts as "the latest example of the Egyptian judiciary’s bid to crush dissent".There was no immediate reaction on the ruling from the Brotherhood, whose members are either in jail or on the run.Outside the Minya court compound, around 200 people, mostly relatives of defendants that were freed, gathered to celebrate the ruling. "Long live justice, long live Sisi," they chanted.Out of a total 683 defendants, around 100 are in detention and the rest were tried in absentia. Four were jailed for life while 496 were acquitted, according to judiciary sources. All verdicts can be appealed before a higher court."Those rulings are a continued farce," prominent Egyptian human rights activist and lawyer Gamal Eid said on Saturday."And the state is still insisting that the judiciary is independent. I don't know how we can believe that when we see rulings like that. It is against logic and common sense. It is a joke," he said.

The United States has said it would be unconscionable for Egypt to carry out mass death sentences against the Brotherhood and that Cairo's actions would have consequences for resumption of suspended U.S. aid.The U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, who is due to tour the Middle East this week, is expected to pay a brief visit to Egypt on Sunday, according to local Egyptian media reports.Egypt, the biggest Arab state, which controls the strategic Suez Canal, has been among the largest recipients of U.S. military and economic aid since its 1979 peace treaty with U.S. ally Israel.Some of that support was put on hold after Mursi's overthrow, the latest round in a decades-old struggle between Egyptian authorities and the Islamist movement.The 70-year-old Badie was first jailed under President Gamal Abdel Nasser nearly 50 years ago, alongside the Brotherhood's then leader and ideologue Sayyid Qutb who was executed in 1966.Qutb's revolutionary writings in jail are believed to have inspired generations of Islamist militants including Ayman al-Zawahri, the Egyptian doctor who succeeded Osama bin Laden as al Qaeda leader, although the Brotherhood itself has renounced violence decades ago.The same court that sentenced Badie on Saturday has already confirmed death sentences on 37 Brotherhood supporters in rulings that were part of a final judgment on 528 Muslim Brotherhood supporters who received initial death sentences.In a separate case, a Cairo court referred Badie and 13 Brotherhood supporters on Thursday to the Mufti, a top religious authority, on charges of murder and firearms possession related to clashes during the protests last July.Badie and other senior Brotherhood leaders including Mursi are standing trial in other cases.Sisi held a brief meeting at Cairo airport late on Friday with Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah whose country, like Egypt, has branded the Brotherhood a terrorist organization, viewing its Islamist doctrines as a threat to Saudi dynastic rule.The Egyptian state had in November issued a law that banned protests without police permission. Israel steps up West Bank search for missing teens

Iraq militants take Syria-border post in drive for caliphate

ANBAR, IRAQ(Reuters) - Sunni fighters seized a border post on the Iraq-Syria frontier, security sources said on Saturday, smashing a line drawn by colonial powers almost a century ago with the aim of creating an Islamic Caliphate stretching from the Mediterranean Sea to Iran.The militants, led by the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), first moved into the nearby town of al-Qaim on Friday, pushing out security forces, the sources said.Once border guards heard that al-Qaim had fallen, they left their posts and militants moved in, the sources said.Sameer al-Shwiali, media adviser to the commander of Iraq's anti-terrorist squad, told Reuters that the Iraqi army was still in control of al-Qaim.Al-Qaim and its neighbouring Syrian counterpart Albukamal are on a strategic supply route. A three-year civil war in Syria has left most of eastern Syria in the hands of Sunni militants, including the Albukamal-Qaim crossing.The Albukamal gate is run by al Qaeda's official Syria branch, the Nusra Front, which has clashed with ISIL but has also agreed to localised truces when it suits both sides.The head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group, Rami Abdulrahman, said ISIL has pushed the Nusra Front out from many areas of eastern Syria in the past few days and their capture of al-Qaim will allow them to quickly move to the Syrian side.ISIL already controls territory around the Abukamal gate, effectively pinching the Nusra Front between its forces in Syria and those in neighbouring Iraq, said Abdulrahman, who tracks the violence.The al Qaeda off-shoot has captured swathes of territory in northwest and central Iraq, including the second city, Mosul. SHI'ITES MOBILISE
The fighting has divided Iraq along sectarian lines. The Kurds have expanded their zone in the northeast to include the oil city of Kirkuk, which they regard as part of Kurdistan, while Sunnis have taken ground in the west.The government has mobilised Shi'ite militia to send volunteers to the front lines.In Baghdad's Shi'ite slum of Sadr City, thousands of fighters wearing military fatigues marched through the streets.They carried rocket-propelled grenades, semi-automatic rifles and trucks had mounted long-range rockets, including the new 3-metre “Muqtada 1” missile, named after Shi'ite cleric Muqtada Sadr, who has tens of thousands of followers.Sadr has yet to throw his fighters into the recent wave of fighting but has criticised Maliki for mishandling the crisis."These brigades are sending a message of peace. More than 70 terrorists were killed and more than 15 vehicles were destroyed,” said Major-General Qassim al-Moussawi, spokesman for the Iraqi military's commander-in-chief.He showed aerial footage of cars and people being blown up but details of the fighting could not be independently confirmed.As in Syria, ISIL has started to clash with other Sunni militias in Iraq. In the town of Hawija, ISIL and members of the Naqshbandi Army, made up of former army officers as well as loyalists to Saddam Hussein's Baath party, started fighting on Friday evening, witnesses said.They said the clashes, a power dispute, killed 15 people."Hawija is falling apart," said a senior tribal figure from the community, just days before the clashes. "There are so many groups working with ISIL. Each group has its agenda."In many ways, Hawija was the spark for Iraqi's current armed Sunni insurgency. Rebel attacks on Ukraine forces put ceasefire under pressure

KIEV/DONETSK Ukraine (Reuters) - Pro-Russian separatists attacked Ukrainian posts on the border with Russia and a military base and tried to storm an airforce base overnight into Saturday, government forces said, putting a Ukrainian unilateral ceasefire under pressure.The action came just hours after the start of a ceasefire at 10 p.m. on Friday by Ukrainian forces, ordered by President Petro Poroshenko as part of his plan to end the rebel insurgency in the east of the country.A government forces spokesman said the separatists used mortars and sniper fire to attack Ukrainian posts at Izvareno and Uspenka on the border, wounding nine Ukrainian officers.Rebels with big calibre machine guns and grenade-launchers also attacked a Ukrainian position at Avdiyivka, near the main regional town of Donetsk, and a Ukrainian post at Kreminna.Separatists controlling Slaviansk also attacked Ukrainian forces on Karachun hill overlooking the town with mortars and grenade-launchers, the spokesman, Vladyslav Seleznyov, said."In all these episodes, the attacks of the (rebel) fighters were deflected" without loss, Seleznyov said.Poroshenko announced the week-long ceasefire on Friday night, urging the rebels to lay down their arms and warning that Ukrainian forces would hit back if attacked.Ukrainian forces also repelled two attacks by around 50 heavily-armed fighters in the early morning on an air defence base at Avdiyivka, which houses surface-to-air missiles, the defence ministry said. No Ukrainian personnel were hurt.The rebels, who have seized strategic points in major towns including Donetsk and set up "people's republics", saying they want to join Russia, said Ukraine has broken its own ceasefire.

Alexander Borodai, prime minister of the self-styled Donetsk People's Republic told a news conference the ceasefire was not working and appealed to Russia to send in peacekeeping forces."Since last evening, combat activities are continuing. Poroshenko's artillery is bombing Slaviansk and the air force has made several raids. Words about a ceasefire as always were just that - words," Borodai said."The anti-terrorist operation against the people of the Donbass is in full swing," he said.Pavel Gubarev, a prominent rebel leader, told Rossiya-24 TV channel that either Ukrainian troops were not obeying orders or Poroshenko "is lying", adding: "There is no ceasefire at all,"Poroshenko, installed on June 7 as president after seven months of turmoil in the ex-Soviet republic, ordered government forces to cease firing to allow his 15-point peace plan to take root. The ceasefire ends at 10 p.m. on June 27.The insurgency in the Russian-speaking east erupted in April after street protests in the capital Kiev toppled the Moscow-backed Viktor Yanukovich. Russia subsequently annexed Ukraine's Crimean peninsula.Poroshenko is gearing up for a diplomatic push to sell his plan but his biggest challenge will be to win over Russian President Vladimir Putin. Egypt upholds death sentence on Brotherhood leader, nearly 200 supporters

CAIRO (Reuters) - An Egyptian court confirmed death sentences on Saturday against the leader of the Muslim Brotherhood and 182 supporters, in a mass trial of Islamists who ruled Egypt for a year but face a fierce crackdown under the new president, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.Mohamed Badie and other defendants were charged in connection with violence that erupted in the southern town of Minya following the ousting of the Brotherhood's President Mohamed Mursi last July, led by then army chief Sisi.One police officer was killed in the violence.The court's decision came two months after it referred the case against Badie, general guide of the now outlawed Brotherhood, and 682 other defendants to a top religious authority, the first step to imposing a death penalty.Those preliminary sentences triggered outrage among Western governments and rights groups, with the United States and European Union both saying they were appalled by the rulings.Since Mursi's overthrow, which was followed by protests by his supporters, hundreds of Islamist protesters have been killed and thousands jailed in a crackdown by security forces. Five hundred army and police officers have also been killed.Sisi, who won a presidential election last month, said in the run-up to the vote that the Brotherhood - Egypt's oldest, most organized and successful political group - was finished and would not exist under his rule.Amnesty International described the verdicts as "the latest example of the Egyptian judiciary’s bid to crush dissent".There was no immediate reaction on the ruling from the Brotherhood, whose members are either in jail or on the run.Outside the Minya court compound, around 200 people, mostly relatives of defendants that were freed, gathered to celebrate the ruling. "Long live justice, long live Sisi," they chanted.Out of a total 683 defendants, around 100 are in detention and the rest were tried in absentia. Four were jailed for life while 496 were acquitted, according to judiciary sources. All verdicts can be appealed before a higher court."Those rulings are a continued farce," prominent Egyptian human rights activist and lawyer Gamal Eid said on Saturday."And the state is still insisting that the judiciary is independent. I don't know how we can believe that when we see rulings like that. It is against logic and common sense. It is a joke," he said.

The United States has said it would be unconscionable for Egypt to carry out mass death sentences against the Brotherhood and that Cairo's actions would have consequences for resumption of suspended U.S. aid.The U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, who is due to tour the Middle East this week, is expected to pay a brief visit to Egypt on Sunday, according to local Egyptian media reports.Egypt, the biggest Arab state, which controls the strategic Suez Canal, has been among the largest recipients of U.S. military and economic aid since its 1979 peace treaty with U.S. ally Israel.Some of that support was put on hold after Mursi's overthrow, the latest round in a decades-old struggle between Egyptian authorities and the Islamist movement.The 70-year-old Badie was first jailed under President Gamal Abdel Nasser nearly 50 years ago, alongside the Brotherhood's then leader and ideologue Sayyid Qutb who was executed in 1966.Qutb's revolutionary writings in jail are believed to have inspired generations of Islamist militants including Ayman al-Zawahri, the Egyptian doctor who succeeded Osama bin Laden as al Qaeda leader, although the Brotherhood itself has renounced violence decades ago.The same court that sentenced Badie on Saturday has already confirmed death sentences on 37 Brotherhood supporters in rulings that were part of a final judgment on 528 Muslim Brotherhood supporters who received initial death sentences.In a separate case, a Cairo court referred Badie and 13 Brotherhood supporters on Thursday to the Mufti, a top religious authority, on charges of murder and firearms possession related to clashes during the protests last July.Badie and other senior Brotherhood leaders including Mursi are standing trial in other cases.Sisi held a brief meeting at Cairo airport late on Friday with Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah whose country, like Egypt, has branded the Brotherhood a terrorist organization, viewing its Islamist doctrines as a threat to Saudi dynastic rule.The Egyptian state had in November issued a law that banned protests without police permission. Israel steps up West Bank search for missing teens

European left-wingers back Juncker for EU Commission

PARIS (Reuters) - Left-wing European leaders agreed on Saturday to back Luxembourg conservative Jean-Claude Juncker for the post of European Commission president, saying they would seek other top EU jobs for their party allies in return.Among those posts was the European Parliament presidency, whose incumbent Martin Schulz, a German Social Democrat, won their backing to seek a new term at the head of the EU assembly.The decision to back Juncker at a meeting in Paris of eight prime ministers, including Italy's Matteo Renzi and German Vice-Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel, makes Britain's David Cameron look increasingly isolated before next week's EU summit.Cameron considers the former Luxembourg premier and veteran EU deal-broker too ardent a proponent of European integration. He had been seeking allies - notably Renzi - to help block his nomination after Juncker's political grouping, the European People's Party, won last month's European Parliament election.But French President Francois Hollande said those present at the meeting had agreed to respect the principle that the leading candidate of whichever party won the election should have the right to put forward that person for the top Commission job."And that happens to be Mr Juncker. But we want a discussion at the summit on the whole set of European responsibilities," Hollande told reporters, adding that some of those roles should be given to Social Democrat-backed candidates.Germany's Gabriel confirmed that Schulz, who led the campaign of Europe's left-wing parties in the elections, would instead be put forward for a new term as parliament chief."Martin Schulz would have been the ideal Commission president, but elections are elections ... and that's why Juncker will become Commission president," he said.Schulz, standing next to Gabriel, told reporters he would formally present his candidature for the parliament post and was "quite optimistic" that a deal on the EU's top positions would be agreed at the summit in Brussels.
NO RULE CHANGES
EU diplomats said this week Juncker was the only name on the table to run the EU's powerful executive arm and looked increasingly likely to be nominated at a June 26-27 leaders' summit.Present at the meeting were the government leaders of Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Italy, Malta, Romania, Slovakia and the Czech Republic.Renzi, whose country will take over the rotating presidency of the 28-member EU next month, left the Paris meeting without speaking to reporters.Gabriel and Hollande said there had been broad agreement that the rules of Europe's so-called Stability and Growth Pact putting limits on public deficits should not be altered, but that it should be implemented flexibly to support growth.The debate over the pact was reopened last week when Gabriel, leader of Angela Merkel's Social Democrat (SPD) coalition partners, suggested during a visit to France that countries that carry out structural reforms should get more time to meet fiscal goals.Merkel swiftly reacted by saying she and Gabriel both agreed there was no need to change the pact as it already offers all the flexibility it needs."The positions I put forward in Germany and France in recent weeks were backed by everyone here, namely: no change to the EU stability and growth pact but we should ensure ... it is used for growth and jobs," Gabriel said.Manfred Weber, head of the European People's Party (EPP) warned Gabriel not to go too far in the debate about softening the Stability and Growth Pact, Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung said in an advance copy of an article due to be published on Sunday.Weber said his faction would not accept a softening of the stability criteria and made working with the Socialists in the European Parliament dependent on this. He was quoted as saying while they wanted to work together, this was, however, "not thinkable if the Euro is to be softened.
