The closer the “Freedom Convoy” of truckers opposed to new rules around vaccine mandates gets to Ottawa, the less it has to do with truckers or even with those rules.The convoy may have started out on the West Coast as a legitimate, albeit wrongheaded, protest against new federal regulations affecting essential workers who regularly cross the Canada-U.S. border (truckers prominent among them).But by now, as could have been easily predicted from the start, it has become a magnet for every sort of extremist — not just sincere anti-vaxxers, but a jumble of conspiracy nuts, Western separatists, far right-wingers, and worse.The organizers themselves may not have wanted that to happen; indeed, some are trying to distance themselves from the worst elements attaching themselves to the cross-country convoy.But everyone is judged by the company they keep, and the minority of Canadian truckers who refuse vaccines and oppose mandates should not be surprised if they find their cause overshadowed by the extremists. Lie down with dogs, as they say, and you get up with fleas.So consider the bizarre “Memorandum of Understanding” that some of the truckers’ leaders have put forward, proposing that the “People of Canada” join with the Senate and the Governor General to usurp the powers of the government and ditch vaccine mandates. Apparently the deep thinkers behind the convoy think the answer to their complaints is a coup of sorts with Gov. Gen. Mary Simon leading the charge.Likewise, ponder the hallucinatory art work featuring truckers parting the seas, Moses-style, with a burning cross, no less, in the background.Or the tweets threatening violence against politicians, or even a Canadian version of the invasion of the Capitol building in Washington once the trucks reach Ottawa.No one knows how much of that to take seriously; it may turn out to be just a lot of venting by people glomming on to a movement they had little to do with organizing.Certainly, Conservative politicians who rushed to lend support to the convoy as it started out should be praying hard that it turns out that way. MPs like Andrew Scheer, Candice Bergen and Pierre Poilievre will look awfully bad if the ugly side of the anti-vax movement is on full display once the truckers get to Ottawa.Even if isn’t, those MPs are firmly on the wrong side of this issue. The vast majority of Canadians are fully vaccinated (including, by some estimates, as many as 90 per cent of truckers themselves) and long ago lost patience with the recalcitrant minority that refuses to get their shots.They know that has prolonged the pandemic needlessly and put an intolerable burden on the health care system. We’ve all paid the cost of the anti-vaxxers’ selfishness.So for MPs, of whatever party, to line up with the truckers’ protest is plain wrong. It may do them some good politically, but it amounts to putting partisan advantage ahead of the collective good. For Conservatives, they’ll only discredit their party among the great majority of voters in the long run (not to mention undermine their leader, which for some may actually be the point).The government is right to stick by its policy on mandatory vaccination for cross-border truckers. Indeed, even if Ottawa reversed itself nothing would change: U.S. authorities have imposed a similar mandate on their side of the border, so the truckers are stuck with it for the time being.At this point they should call off their protest. It will accomplish nothing, and it’s already amplifying the most toxic voices among those opposed to vaccine mandates, and vaccines themselves.Truckers were our heroes at the start of the pandemic.Now Trudeau and his Liberal allies want to smear and demonize them. This is madness.”The demonstrations have not led to physical violence. But Ottawa police released a statement Sunday saying the force is investigating more than 200 calls to its hotline for hate-motivated crimes.Police, who were not enforcing bylaws at the outset, have started putting more pressure on the protesters.The department said between Saturday and Sunday morning, officers issued more than 450 tickets. Anti-hate experts are urging policy makers to take action against what they describe as growing right-wing extremism in Canada.One of these experts says research suggests that millions of Canadians have been drawn into the far right over the course of the pandemic, some of whom have been indoctrinated by misinformation and lies that were then amplified by the Freedom Convoy.Evan Balgord, the executive director of the Canadian Anti-Hate Network, says the convoy’s organizers were able to successfully use the month-long February protest to recruit vaccine-hesitant people into their movement.“They were now rubbing shoulders with, you know, racists and bigots and people who would like to use violence to overthrow the government. A portion of those people are getting further radicalized.”Balgord was one of more than a dozen experts who spoke at “Hate Among Us,” an international conference held in Ottawa Tuesday that discussed solutions to growing extremism.Although some of the Convoy’s leadership is now facing criminal charges, Balgord says the movement’s ideas are entrenched in the mainstream.Balgord, whose organization tracked right-wing groups and monitored their activities and influence, claims that six years ago there were around 20,000 white supremacists in Canada. That’s not the case anymore, Balgord says.Balgord estimates that there are now 10 to 15 per cent of Canadians who hold far right views, which encompass a wide range of extremist opinions including anti-government and anti-science perspectives along with racist and homophobic beliefs. Some of them may not consider themselves racist, but they are giving cover to extremists, he says.A recent Abacus Data survey indicated that 44 per cent of the Canadian population, or 13 million Canadian adults, believe in at least one conspiracy theory. These theories include racist beliefs that political elites are trying to replace native-born Canadians with immigrants who support them, or that the World Economic Forum has a secret strategy to impose its economic plans across the globe.GAINING POLITICAL POWER-Meanwhile polling data released earlier this month by EKOS Research showed that 25 per cent of Canadians support the anti-vaccine mandate views espoused by Convoy organizersIn addition to this, Frank Graves, president of EKOS Research, says at least 10 per cent, or more than three million Canadians, view the current government as illegitimate. The supporters are predominately male and under 50 years old, with a high school education. But as the U.S. learned on Jan. 6 last year during the attack on the Capitol, the risk picture has changed - the dominant threats here are homegrown.Stephanie Carvin, from Carleton University, says national security risks in Canada have shifted from large scale threats to buildings to targeted personal attacks on politicians.“Jan. 6 changed things in Canada. We’re now not so much worried about bombs. We’re worried about a mob armed with hockey sticks and fire extinguishers charging at the historical parliament buildings,” Carvin said.In June, the parliamentary protective service issued panic buttons to MPs, some of whom received death threats. Since the pandemic, the threats have become more pervasive, personal and tougher to guard against, says Carvin, who now teaches at Carleton University in Ottawa.“It’s a much more dangerous situation when people see politicians as legitimate targets for violence.”POLITICAL AND PUBLIC SOLUTIONS-To counter this growing threat to democracy, Heidi Beirich of U.S.-based Global Project Against Hate and Extremism, says the extremists are exploring real grievances like job losses and rising costs of living that policy makers need to address. She says Canada should pass a digital accountability law that forces social media companies to clamp down on disinformation shared on their platforms.Bierich says community groups can organize to fight back against the hateful movement. An example is Ottawa’s “Battle of Billings Bridge” in February this year, where concerned residents blocked a roadway for hours, preventing a convoy of vehicles from joining the trucker protest that occupied Parliament Hill.Heidi Beirich works with the Global Project Against Hate and Extremism. She researches White Supremacist terrorism.“This is a situation where we have a growing far right movement that’s a threat to a lot of things: climate change, racial injustice and sound immigration policies. The list could go on,” Bierich said.Beirich added that it’s important for media to continue reporting on the far right and its views.“It’s not a question of giving them oxygen. They’ve got the oxygen. The question now is are they being appropriately examined and interrogated by the press about their beliefs and ideas so other people can be inoculated from their views.”

Iran has reportedly been developing large cruise missiles that could potentially “eliminate many of the obstacles” toward delivering a nuclear bomb.Citing several US intelligence and security sources and experts, The New York Times reported Thursday that Tehran has moved closer toward achieving weapons-grade enrichment and could soon possess the technology required to deliver nuclear bombs.While both American and Israeli intelligence officials have suggested that Tehran would require at least two years to reach sufficient levels of enrichment and build a bomb that could fit atop a missile, the report said “growing gaps in knowledge” about the pace of Iran’s nuclear development could significantly change that estimation.The report noted that Iran has recently notified inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that it plans to advance its nuclear enrichment efforts at its underground Fordo site, which was previously sabotaged by Israel and the US.The enrichment to 60% purity — a technical step from weapons-grade levels of 90% — was being carried out using the advanced IR-6 centrifuges at the facility and was described as a response to the IAEA’s resolution last week criticizing Tehran’s lack of cooperation with the nuclear watchdog.The Times suggested that the Fordo site — located deep within a mountain range — would be “hard to bomb,” even if Israel’s incoming hawkish government led by Benjamin Netanyahu wants to carry out an attack. Netanyahu had reportedly considered ordering a strike on the site when he was premier in 2012.As hopes of returning to the 2015 nuclear agreement with Iran have dissipated, the US has shifted its focus to undermine Iran’s nuclear plans, and according to The New York Times, the Fordo site has been a cause for concern among Pentagon officials.“Imagine telling the incoming administration in January 2021 that within two years, Iran would be enriching to near weapons-grade uranium at Fordo, deploying its most advanced centrifuges in large numbers, accepting severely limited international monitoring, accumulating multiple bombs’ worth of highly enriched uranium and rejecting diplomatic efforts,” Henry Rome, a senior fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, was cited as saying.“That’s not quite a worst-case scenario, but it’s pretty close.”Under the terms of the 2015 agreement, Iran was only permitted to enrich uranium to 3.67% purity. That deal gave Iran sanctions relief in return for curbs on its nuclear program to prevent the production of a weapon. A sinkhole opened up on Tel Aviv’s Ayalon Highway on Friday morning, two months after a similar incident closed sections of the thoroughfare for a number of weeks.The incident took place at the La Guardia interchange on the major intracity freeway in the Gush Dan region, close to the Hagana Train Station.No injuries or damage to property were reported.Three of the five lanes going south were blocked to traffic and drivers were asked to seek alternative routes, police said.Safety experts from Ayalon Highways, the company that operates the road, were dispatched to the scene and are examining the scope of the damage caused. (AP) — The Georgia Supreme Court on Wednesday reinstated the state’s
ban on abortions after roughly six weeks of pregnancy, abruptly ending
access to later abortions that had resumed days earlier.In a one-page
order, the justices put a lower court ruling overturning the ban on hold
while they consider an appeal. Doctors who had resumed providing
abortions after six weeks had to immediately stop.Abortion advocates
blasted the order, saying it will traumatize women who must now arrange
travel to other states for an abortion or keep their pregnancies. Women
waiting for an abortion at providers' offices were turned away,
according to the American Civil Liberties Union of Georgia, which
represents abortion providers challenging the ban.“It is outrageous that
this extreme law is back in effect, just days after being rightfully
blocked,” said Alice Wang, an attorney with the Center for Reproductive
Rights, which also represents plaintiffs in the case. “This legal ping
pong is causing chaos for medical providers trying to do their jobs and
for patients who are now left frantically searching for the abortion
services they need.”The state attorney general’s office in a court
filing said “untold numbers of unborn children” would “suffer the
permanent consequences” if the state Supreme Court did not issue a stay
and halt the Nov. 15 decision by Fulton County Superior Court Judge
Robert McBurney.McBurney ruled the state’s abortion ban was invalid
because when it was signed into law in 2019, U.S. Supreme Court
precedent that was established by Roe v. Wade and another ruling had
allowed abortion well past six weeks.The decision immediately prohibited
enforcement of the abortion ban statewide. The state appealed and asked
the Georgia Supreme Court to put the decision on hold while the appeal
moved forward.Although abortions past six weeks had resumed, some
abortion providers said they were proceeding cautiously over concerns
the ban could be quickly reinstated.Georgia’s ban first took effect in
July, after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. It prohibits
most abortions once a “detectable human heartbeat” is present.Cardiac
activity can be detected by ultrasound in cells within an embryo that
will eventually become the heart around six weeks into a pregnancy. That
means most abortions in Georgia are effectively banned at a point
before many people know they are pregnant.The measure was passed by the
state Legislature and signed into law by Republican Gov. Brian Kemp in
2019. In his ruling, McBurney said the timing — before the U.S. Supreme
Court overturned Roe v. Wade — made the law immediately invalid.
Legislatures exceed their authority when they enact laws that violate a
constitutional right declared by the judicial branch. To enact the law,
the state Legislature would have to pass it again, he wrote.The state
attorney general's office in a filing with the Georgia Supreme Court
blasted McBurney's reasoning as having “no basis in law, precedent, or
common sense.”Plaintiffs' attorneys defended it in a reply and warned of
“irreparable harm” to women if it were put on hold. They also asked the
high court for 24 hours notice before issuing any stay to “avoid the
potential chaos” from resuming the ban while women waited for an

A manager at a Walmart
store in Chesapeake, Virginia, opened fire inside the store Tuesday
evening, killing six people and hurting at least six more at the retail
outlet before turning the gun on himself, officials said
Wednesday.Officers were dispatched to an active threat situation at the
Walmart Supercenter at 10:12 p.m. local time, Chesapeake police
spokesperson Leo Kosinski told reporters at the scene Tuesday evening.
On Wednesday morning, Police Chief Mark Solesky said officers were on
the scene within two minutes, entered the stor two minutes after that
and within just about an hour they had cleared the store and located all
of the victims.Two victims and the gunman were found dead in the break
room, city officials said Wednesday afternoon. Another victim was found
dead toward the front of the store. Three died at area hospitals.In a
statement, Walmart identified the gunman as Andre Bing. His position was
"overnight team lead" and he started working for Walmart in 2010, the
company said. City officials said the gunman was 31 years old and that
he was armed with a handgun and multiple magazines.Solesky said the
gunman died of a suspected self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police were not
seeking anyone else in connection with the shooting.Walmart worker
Briana Tyler told the Associated Press the shooting happened in the
store's break room. Between 15 and 20 people on the overnight stocking
team were in the room for a meeting when her manager opened fire, Tyler
said."It is by the grace of God that a bullet missed me," Tyler told the
AP. "I saw the smoke leaving the gun, and I literally watched bodies
drop. It was crazy."She told the news service the shooting unfolded
quickly and the gunman didn't appear to be targeting specific people.
City officials said in a statement the gunman was dressed in civilian
clothing and not wearing any type of body armor."He was just shooting
all throughout the room," Tyler said. "It didn't matter who he hit. He
didn't say anything. He didn't look at anybody in any specific type of
way."Two of the deceased victims were identified by family members as
Tyneka Johnson, 22, and Brian Pendleton, 39. The city of Chesapeake
identified the remaining adult victims Wednesday evening as Lorenzo
Gamble, Kellie Pyle, Randall Blevins. The identity of the sixth victim, a
16-year-old boy, was withheld because he was a minor, the city said.At
least six other people were receiving treatment at hospitals, the city
said. Two patients at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital were in critical
condition, Dr. Michael Hooper, the hospital's chief medical officer,
told reporters.Johnson had only worked for Walmart for a couple of

queen’s birthday and the atmosphere had been festive. When the shooting
started, much of the crowd already had left the dance floor and was
gathered in an enclosed patio just off the dance floor.Five people were
killed and 17 wounded by gunfire in an attack that unfolded over just
minutes, according to authorities.As the shooter moved deeper into the
club, VanScyoc heard another volley of shots. Shooter Anderson Aldrich,
22, sprayed bullets across the dance hall. Partygoers along the walls
flipped over tables and ducked behind them, according to VanScyoc and a
friend who was there, A.J. Bridgewater. The two recounted what happened
during the shooting while standing beside the growing memorial of
flowers outside the club on Tuesday night.VanScyoc didn’t see the
victims get shot, she said, “but I heard screams.”Another patron, James
Slaugh, said he had been getting ready to leave for the night when, “all
of a sudden we just hear, ‘pop, pop, pop.’ As I turn, I took a bullet
in my arm from the back.”Slaugh, who spoke to from his hospital bed,
said he watched others around him fall, including his boyfriend, who was
shot in the leg, and his sister, who survived with bullet wounds in 13
places. The scariest part of the shooting, he said, was not knowing
whether the assailant would fire again.As she saw the shooter move
toward the patio — viewable from the dance hall through a glass door —
VanScyoc took her chance and jumped up from behind the pool table to run
for an exit.Out on the patio, Bridgewater said he started to flee as
the first volleys rang out, but panicked and tripped over a stool. He
regained his footing and rushed with a group of about 20 people toward a
closed garage door that led to a fenced-in area. “It was flight or
die,” he said.Neither VanScyoc nor Bridgewater saw Aldrich subdued, but
believed it happened as the attacker moved toward the patio. Aldrich was
pulled to the ground by two club patrons — Thomas James and Richard
Fierro — and beaten.To those who frequented Club Q, the violence also
desecrated one of the few places the Colorado Springs LGBTQ community
could fully embrace their authentic selves.The motive for the attack is
still being investigated. A judge ordered Aldrich to be held without
bail during an initial court appearance Wednesday on preliminary charges
of murder and hate crimes. Officials say Aldrich was armed with a
semiautomatic rifle and at least one other gun was recovered at the
scene.Once VanScyoc had made it outside, she moved to the front entrance
of the club, where she said James had collapsed with a bullet wound in
his chest after helping subdue the suspect. She held pressure on the
wound with one hand and spoke to police on her phone until paramedics

door open with some difficulty, scaled the fence, and ran toward a
nearby Walgreens, pounding on the door to no response. The group moved

Jews looking for an alternative to Donald Trump in 2024’s presidential
race, Ted Cruz presented a tantalizing choice on Saturday — at least for
a few minutes.“When I arrived in the Senate 10 years ago, I set a goal
to be the leading defender of Israel in the United States,” the Texas
senator said during his chance to address the Republican Jewish
Coalition conference last weekend.The crowd that was packed into a
ballroom deep in the gold lame reaches of the Venetian casino complex
lapped it up, in what some of them refer to as the “kosher cattle call,”
auditions for some of the GOP’s biggest campaign donors.Cruz applied
his folksy bellow to phrases already rendered stale by the speakers who
preceded him, making them seem fresh. “Nancy Pelosi is out of a job,” he
said of the Democratic speaker of the US House of Representatives,
eliciting more cheers from a crowd relishing a fragile majority in the
House, one of few GOP wins during midterm elections earlier this
month.But the onetime constitutional lawyer lost the crowd when he asked
everyone to take out their cell phones and text a number associated
with his podcast, “Verdict.” As the murmurs graduated into grumbles it
became clear: about a third of the 800 or so people in the room were
Shabbat-observant Jews, taking texting off the table for them.Cruz never
really recovered his rapport with the audience, which included
deep-pocketed donors looking to pick a candidate and rally support for
him or her. That made his speech an extreme example of the trajectory of
just about every address by prospective presidential hopefuls at the
RJC conference — excitement tempered by two nagging questions: Does this
candidate havewhat it takes to beat Trump, whose obsession with

And is Trump inevitably going to trounce whoever challenges him? The
former president was at the center of every presentation and of

named him, some did not, but — except for Trump himself during a video

Christie, the former New Jersey governor who was the first of Trump’s
primary opponents in 2016 to drop out and endorse him, and then among
the first to repudiate him during his presidency, repeated the
admonition he made a year ago — to move beyond Trump.Say his name,

is time to stop doing the knowing nod, the ‘we can’t talk.’ It’s time to

for 2024, last week, and so far the only one. But others among the half
dozen or so likely candidates in Las Vegas were clearly signaling a

star among right-wing pro-Israel groups for her successes at the United
Nations in marginalizing the Palestinians, all but told the group she
was ready.“A lot of people have asked if I’m going to run for
president,” Haley said. “Now that the midterms are over, I’ll look at it
in a serious way and I’ll have more to say soon.”The biggest cheers
were reserved for Ron DeSantis, the Florida governor who was a bright
spot for Republicans on November 8, winning reelection by a landslide.
DeSantis listed his pro-Israel bona fides (boycotting Israel boycotters)
and his culture wars (taking on Disney after the company protested his
“Parents Rights in Education” bill, known among its critics as “Don’t
Say Gay”).The crowd loved it. “The State of Florida is where woke goes
to die!” he said to ecstatic cheers.DeSantis did not once mention Trump;
the former president has already targeted him, saying whatever success
the Florida governor has, he owes to Trump’s endorsement of his 2018
gubernatorial bid, and dubbing him “Ron DeSanctimonious.”Getting the
nickname was a clear sign that DeSantis was a formidable opponent, said
Fred Zeidman, an RJC board member who has yet to endorse a candidate.
“It’s a badge of honor, in that Trump has identified you as a legitimate
contender for the presidency,” he said in an interview.Yet even
DeSantis was not a clear Trump successor. The RJC usually heads into
campaign-year conferences with a clear idea of which of its board
members back which candidates, and then relays the word to Jewish
Republicans whom to contact to join a prospective campaign.That did not
happen this year, and Trump was the reason. Jewish Republicans are still
“shopping” for candidates, Ari Fleischer, the former George W. Bush
administration spokesman who is an RJC board member and who also has not
endorsed a candidate, said in a gaggle with reporters.Trump was the
elephant in the RJC room, Fleischer said, using the Hebrew word for the
animal.“Donald Trump is the pil in the room. There’s no question about
it,” Fleischer said right after Trump spoke. “And he is a former
president. He has tremendous strength and you could hear it and feel it
with this group, particularly on policy, particularly on the substantive
issues that he was able to accomplish in the Middle East. It resonates
with many people.”Trump earned cheers during his speech as he reviewed
the hard-right turn his administration took on Israel policy, moving the
embassy to Jerusalem and quitting the Iran nuclear deal, among other
measures.“There are other people, they’re going to look at his style and
look at things he’s said, and question if he is too hot to handle,”
Fleischer continued.Trump in his talk at first stuck to a
forward-looking script, but toward the end of it, could not resist
repeating his lies about winning the 2020 election. Asked by RJC
chairman Norm Coleman how he would expand the Abraham Accords, the
normalization agreements he brokered between Israel and four Arab
countries, should he be reelected, Trump instead bemoaned the
election.“Well, we had a very disgraceful election,” he said. “We got
many millions of votes more than we had in 2016, as you all know, and
the result was a disgrace in my opinion, absolute sham and a
disgrace.”It was one of many only-in-Vegas moments at an event that
brings together disparate groups, including young secular Jews from
university campuses gawking at the glitter, Orthodox Jews lurking at
elevators waiting for someone else to push the button so they can get to
their rooms, and Christian politicos and their staffers encountering an
intensely Jewish environment for the first time.“Shabbat starts on
Friday night and ends on Saturday night,” one young staffer explained to
another as they contemplated a “Shabbat Toilet” sign taped to a urinal.
“But doesn’t it flush automatically anyway?” asked the other.South

speaker to decry violent attacks on Jews.“When I think about my brothers
and sisters in the Jewish community, in New York City being attacked on

hate and racism.” He was also the only speaker to praise a Democrat,
Nevada Sen. Jacky Rosen, with whom he has launched an African-American
Jewish coalition in the Senate.A couple of contenders who have distanced
themselves from Trump said his name out loud — but with disdain.“Trump
was saying that we’d be winning so much we’d get tired of winning,” said
Larry Hogan, who is ending a second term as the governor of a
Democratic state, Maryland, with high ratings. “Well, I’m sick and tired
of our party losing. This election last week, I’m even more sick and
tired than I was before. This is the third election in a row that we
lost and should have won. I say three strikes and you’re out.”Former
vice president Mike Pence peppered his speech with fond references to
Trump and his refusal to heed experienced personnel who counseled an
even-handed Middle East policy, a move that Pence and the RJC both
believe paid off.Yet Pence also appeared to condemn Trump’s boldest
rejection of norms, his effort to overturn his 2020 loss, which spurred
an insurrection at the US Capitol in which Pence’s life was threatened.
“The American people must know that our party keeps our oath to the
Constitution even when political expediency may suggest that we do
otherwise,” Pence said.One contradiction for those in attendance was the
longing for Trump’s combativeness while wanting to shuck themselves of
Trump’s baggage.Typical was Alan Kruglak, a Maryland security systems
contractor who said he appreciated the pro-business measures Hogan had
introduced in his state, but was more interested in a fighter like
DeSantis.“Trump did great things, but I think Trump’s past his time, we
need younger blood that is less controversial,” said Kruglak, 68. “Trump
needs to hand the baton to somebody younger, and who doesn’t have any
baggage associated with them, but has the same message of being
independent.”The problem is that Trump still commands the loyalty of
about 30 percent of the party, according to insiders, and that could be
insurmountable in a crowded primary.Trump, Fleischer said, was
inevitable as a finalist, but he did not have to be inevitable as the
nominee.“If there’s five, six, seven real conservative outsider
candidates, Donald Trump will win with a plurality because nobody else
will come close,” he said. “If there’s only one or two, it’s a fair
fight.”Who would those one or two be? Fleischer would not say. Among the

company will join the consortium exploring a gas field Israel shares
with Lebanon.Last Tuesday, Israel signed a framework agreement with
French energy giant TotalEnergies and Italian hydrocarbon concern ENI.An
Energy Ministry official told The Times of Israel that approval was
given as part of that agreement for Qatar Energy to join the consortium,
though the announcement released by the ministry last week did not
mention Qatar or the energy company.Instead, it noted only that “any
future partner in the consortium will be approved by Israel and will be
bound by this agreement.”It was widely understood that Qatar Energy was
the “future partner” alluded to in the deal.Qatar Energy did not respond
to requests for comment.Earlier last month, Lebanon and Israel
announced that they had struck a “historic” deal to resolve a maritime
border dispute involving offshore gas fields after years of US-mediated
talks.Shortly afterward, Lebanon asked TotalEnergies to kickstart gas
exploration off its shores, including in the Qana or Sidon reservoir,
parts of which fall in Israel’s territorial waters. Under the deal,
Israel it receive a portion of the revenues from gas extracted from the
field.Qatar Energy, responsible for all of the Gulf emirate’s oil and

sweeping through Haiti is claiming a growing number of children amid a
surge in malnutrition, UNICEF announced Wednesday.The deadly combination
means that about 40% of cholera cases in the impoverished country of
more than 11 million inhabitants now involve children, with 9 out of 10
cases reported in areas where people are starving, according to the
United Nations agency.“We have to plan for the worst,” Manuel Fontaine,
director of UNICEF’s Office of Emergency Programs, told The Associated
Press on Tuesday during a visit to Haiti.Cholera has killed at least 216
people and sickened more than 12,000 since the first deaths were
announced in early October, according to the Haitian Health Ministry and
Pan American Health Organization. They say about 9,300 people are
currently hospitalized with the disease. Experts believe the number is
much higher due to underreporting.UNICEF and Haiti’s government are
seeking at least $28 million to help feed, hydrate and care for 1.4
million people affected by the crisis, with that number expected to
increase as malnutrition worsens, especially in urban areas such as the
Cite Soleil slum in the capital of Port-au-Prince, something that hasn’t
been seen before.“Cholera and malnutrition are a lethal combination,
one leading to the other,” Fontaine said.On a recent morning at the
Gheskio medical clinic in Port-au-Prince, nurses, doctors and social
workers tended to malnourished children who also were fighting
cholera.“This is a challenge for us,” said Dr. Karine Sévère, who runs
the clinic’s cholera department. “When the children are malnourished, it
takes more time for them to recover.”She estimates that malnutrition
cases have increased by at least 40% in recent weeks, with nurses
feeding children soup in the morning and rice, beans, meat and
vegetables in the afternoon to help them gain weight.It’s food that not
many parents can afford in a country where about 60% of the population
earns less than $2 a day.Roselord David, 40, says she and her five
children had to flee Cite Soleil after warring gangs set her house on
fire. They temporarily lived in a public park and then moved in with her

social worker who spotted her emaciated 5-year-old daughter at the park
urged David to take her to the clinic.“They told me she was suffering
from malnutrition,” David said in a quiet voice, embarrassed to confide

15-year-old teenage boy was sleeping, an IV in his thin arm.His friend,
Island Meus, said she was taking turns with his mother to care for
him.“He sometimes goes without food,” she confided, adding that he
occasionally eats a bowl of rice with plantains when his family can
afford it.Haiti’s government recently requested cholera vaccines, but
there’s a worldwide shortage of them and 31 countries are reporting
outbreaks, so it’s unclear if and when they will arrive. However,

exposing her hair. She was brutally beaten and died in a Tehran hospital
three days later.Amini’s death sparked fervent protests and revolts
across Iran – the result of 43 years of women’s suppression by the
supremacists who control the country.Iranian women are forbidden to ride
bicycles, jog through their neighborhoods or dance in public. They can
be forcibly married at the age of 13 but may obtain divorce only with a
male judge’s approval. Married women cannot travel without the consent
of their husbands, and they face imprisonment for exercising rights that
we might take for granted – including failing to cover their hair with

United Nations General Assembly’s finance committee voted unanimously
Wednesday to start discussions on international taxation standards,
effectively challenging a similar long-standing initiative led by
advanced economies in the Paris-based Organization for Economic
Cooperation and Development (OECD).Wednesday’s resolution calls for
“developing an international tax cooperation framework or instrument
that is developed and agreed upon through a United Nations
intergovernmental process.”Such a framework has been in development at
the OECD for nearly a decade, but has yet to be given a final draft.At
stake in the agreement are new rules about whether multinational
corporations should be allowed to store their profits in tax havens
overseas and in what jurisdictions corporations can be taxed for the use
of their products.The successful U.N. resolution was put forward by the
54-member African Group of nations within the U.N. General Assembly, a
bloc with a distinct economic character from the group of developed
economies within the OECD and with different ideas on how financial
transparency and tax administration should work.“We note that the OECD
has played a role in these areas. It is clear after ten years of
attempting to reform international tax rules that there is no substitute
for the global, inclusive, transparent forum provided by the United
Nations,” the representative of the Nigerian delegation to the U.N. said
during Wednesday’s vote.“The African Group urges countries to remain
committed to the development of inclusive tax instruments at the United
Nations and encourage the OECD to play a supporting role in this
regard,” the Nigerian representative said.Countries from the OECD
cautioned that it would be unproductive for the U.N. to double up on the
OECD’s work, but stopped short of voting against the resolution.“We
disagree with the notion implied by this resolution that there is not
presently a highly inclusive forum working to strengthen international
cooperation on tax,” the U.S. representative told the second
committee.The U.N. resolution “proposes a process that will tear down
much of the progress that has been made in international tax cooperation
since the 2008-2009 financial crisis and will undermine the inclusive
framework at the OECD through which so much progress is being made,” the
U.S. delegate added.Fears that the OECD process had stalled grew over
the summer after the nation of Hungary blocked a 15-percent minimum
corporate tax from being adopted in the European Union, leading the U.S.
to cancel its long-standing bilateral tax treaty with Hungary.Hungary
then sent a delegation to the U.S. to express solidarity with
Republicans who also opposed the Biden administration’s efforts toward
international corporate tax standards.“Treasury’s actions suggest an
impulsive attempt to pressure a country that has raised legitimate
concerns with the agreement to fall in line,” Republican leaders on the
House Ways and Means and Senate Finance and Foreign Relations committees
wrote in a letter earlier in November.International tax experts say the
timing of Wednesday’s vote has to do with the delay on the OECD
provision that stipulates where a corporation can be taxed for the use
of its products as well as frustration from lower-income countries about
the amount of that tax.“There’s a document that’s supposed to be coming
out in December outlining which unilateral measures will need to be
abandoned, including digital services taxes,” Daniel Bunn, president of
the Tax Foundation, a Washington think tank, said in an interview. “The
goal is to have a multilateral treaty ready for signature middle of next
year.”On the amount that corporations can be taxed – which is known as
Pillar Two within the agreement – EU finance ministers are set to meet
again in December.“The language of their announcement is that they’re
going to be ‘aiming for agreement’ on Pillar Two, but it’s not clear
that that’s certain. Hungary has been holding things up,” Bunn
added.Other analysts in Washington say that the interests of developing
countries are not given proper consideration in the OECD’s framework, an
oversight that could further delay a final deal.“Although the OECD’s
global minimum tax framework got broad international support last year,
there have been advocates concerned that any final product would not
address the needs of developing countries,” John Buhl, an analyst with
the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center, said in a statement to The
Hill.“In the near term, it could also embolden skeptics in Congress and
holdouts in the EU who already have concerns about the plan and whether
it will ever reach critical mass with enough countries to make adoption
worthwhile,” he added.Tax fairness advocates welcomed Wednesday’s U.N.
resolution, arguing that the OECD had its chance to deliver on a global
tax treaty and that the U.N. is now the better organization to handle
the issue.“The OECD has been unprecedentedly aggressive in its lobbying,
but could hardly have failed more completely as the resolution passed
by unanimous consensus,” Alex Cobham, head of the European Tax Justice
Network, said in a statement. “Some OECD countries spoke in favor of the
organization’s role after the resolution’s adoption, but … the OECD’s
two-pillar tax proposal is on life support.”The OECD’s work “has left
countries losing $483 billion in tax to tax havens a year; and work
which has been widely identified as exclusionary by countries outside
the core membership of rich countries. Ultimately, this only confirms
the importance of moving tax rulemaking to a globally inclusive and
transparent forum at the United Nations,” Cobham added.The Tax
Foundation’s Bunn said that whether negotiations take place at the OECD
or the U.N., the same sets of issues are bound to arise in the practice
of hashing out an agreement.“What has happened at the OECD, with
countries struggling to reach agreement on big picture tax issues – the
struggle is going to continue regardless of what the forum is,” he
added.

vulnerabilities in the U.S. security ecosystem, raising questions of
safety in the face of more effective cyberthreats from Russia and
China."They've gotten into U.S. government websites," Bruce Klingner,
senior research fellow for northeast Asia at the Heritage Foundation,
told Fox News Digital. "They’ve gotten into the U.S. financial systems,
companies, systems, [and] they were even going after COVID vaccine
companies like Pfizer and others to try to get information on the
vaccine.""It really is an amazingly extensive and capable system," he
added.Some estimates indicate Pyongyang stole approximately $400 million
in 2022 and took in $1 billion in the first nine months of 2022, making
cryptocurrency a significant source of income.FORMER NATIONAL SECURITY
ADVISER ADDRESSES NORTH KOREA AND CHINA FEARS-North Korean hackers were
able to secure $615 million in assets in March alone, making it the
largest cryptocurrency heist on record.What started as purely

Pyongyang’s hackers succeed in stealing traditional funds: first, by
seizing control of a bank’s financial transfer system run by the Society
for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunications – the infamous
SWIFT system; second, breaching ATMs to dispense cash, which agents can

at the FDD, told Fox News Digital."The attacks we've seen have
leveraged both where North Korean hackers can track a U.N. administrator
and someone [who] has access to systems to click a malicious link as
hackers often do," Fixler said. "Then, in other instances, North Korean
hackers have exploited problems with code, particularly as it relates to
cryptocurrency bridges, the pieces that connect differently, how you
can transfer assets from one blockchain to another, blockchain for

diplomat said the expanded hours were a step in the right direction, but
said that Israel has informed Jordan that the number of buses ferrying
travelers to the crossing on both sides of the border would remain the
same. Travelers must arrive at the crossing by bus, and Israel

said that keeping the bus quota at the same level could defeat the
purpose of the expanded hours since the crossing would not be able to

frustrated with Israel if its approach toward Russia and China continues
to run at odds with US priorities, according to an internal Foreign

in our assessment, the level of patience toward allies who don’t
contribute to this effort will go down,” reads the report leaked to
Channel 13 news on Tuesday.The document was produced by the ministry’s

Netanyahu is working to put together a new coalition and retake power,
raising fears of increased friction with Washington.During his recent
