He said the children were getting medical attention and he hoped to talk with them Saturday.The air force evacuated the children on a helicopter that used lines to pull them up because it couldn’t land in the dense rainforest where they were found. It said the craft was going to San Jose del Guaviare, a small town on the edge of the jungle, but gave no information on plans for dealing with the youngsters.No details were released on how the four siblings aged 13, 9, 4 and 11 months managed to survive on their own for so long, though they belong to an Indigenous group that lives in the remote region.Petro called them an “example of survival” and predicted their saga “will remain in history.”The military tweeted pictures showing a group of soldiers and volunteers posing with the children, who were wrapped in thermal blankets. WASHINGTON (AP) — Iran is providing Russia with materials to build a drone manufacturing plant east of Moscow as the Kremlin looks to lock in a steady supply of weaponry for its ongoing invasion of Ukraine, according to a US intelligence finding released by the White House on Friday.National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said that US intelligence officials believe a plant in Russia’s Alabuga special economic zone could be operational early next year. The White House also released satellite imagery taken in April of the industrial location, several hundred miles east of Moscow, where it believes the plant “will probably be built.”US President Joe Biden’s administration publicly stated in December that it believed Tehran and Moscow were considering standing up a drone assembly line in Russia for the Ukraine war. For months, officials have said the United States believed Iran was considering selling hundreds of ballistic missiles to Russia, but White House officials have said they do not have evidence a deal was consummated.The White House has noted that Iran also has weapons flowing its way from Russia.Iran is seeking to purchase additional military equipment from Russia, including attack helicopters, radars and YAK-130 combat trainer aircraft, according to the White House. In April, Iran announced that it had finalized a deal to buy Su-35 fighter jets from Russia.

Those include members of the NEXUS and Global Entry programs, military and aviation personnel, and Canadian police.The government has earmarked approximately CA$1.8 billion (roughly US$1.34 billion) over the next five years for the project in Canada’s 2023 budget proposal, according to a government announcement.The agency describes three different sets of benefits Canadians participating in the program will experience when passing through screening checkpoints. Pakistan’s National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has introduced iris biometrics as the third ID verification option on its Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS), calling it a “landmark achievement.”A video promoting the modality’s addition clearly depicts the use of an iCAM R100 series scanner from Iris ID to capture a subject’s iris biometrics.Dubbed IRIS, the system will enable government departments and financial institutions in the country to reliably carry out ID verification, NADRA said in a statement shared with Biometric Update. It called the move a great leap forward in its in relentless efforts in enhancing secure and accurate citizen identification.Before now, NADRA ran the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) and facial recognition for ID verification and authentication.The Authority says the iris scan, with its low false match rates, is a supplementary method which will add another layer of security to the functionality of the other two options.NADRA says it has deployed the technology at its mega centers at Islamabad, PECO Road Lahore and DHK Karachi for more user acceptance testing after a successful pilot at its headquarters. But the center-right European People’s Party (EPP) was granted an exception that allows flexibility on issues regarding remote biometric identification. That has caused friction with the other parties, which accuse the EPP of breaking the deal and pushing changes that put marginalized communities at higher risk and could compromise individual privacy.Euractiv says it talked to an unnamed European parliamentary official who said the EPP needs to take responsibility for how they have exploited the flexibility granted to them on remote biometrics. “The agreement was no group amendments,” the source reportedly said, referring to how the EPP’s actions put voting out of reach of the other voting blocs. Fearing a domino effect among other groups seeking changes to the text, the official said that now, “anything is possible.”A representative from the EPP claims the issue is fake news. The flexibility gives them the right to table the amendments. The proposed amendments amount to a reversal of a previous compromise banning live use of remote biometric identification in public spaces, the source reportedly said. The EPP’s changes expand the allowable use cases beyond jury-approved investigations of serious crimes to include locating a missing person and a suspect of a serious crime – and most controversial, preventing terrorist attacks.Although the EPP’s text mentions preapprovals and safeguards, it contrasts with the left-leaning parties’ preference for a total ban on remote biometric identification.Opposition calls foul on prevention ‘myths’One issue facing lawmakers is how to define and classify the risk and benefit of various AI applications. It is a development that begs the question, what bodily function will not be turned into a biometric identifier.Researchers from the University of Washington and Google have written code that reportedly is pretty good at identifying who among a group of subjects is coughing. It could be used in diagnosing and treating cystic fibrosis, tuberculosis and asthma.It might even work on populations that have a future form of Covid.Their paper claims that their model correctly classifies the noise 82.15 percent of the time. The researchers went beyond that, using an algorithm trained on speech, something that already has been done. Speech code “performed reasonably well on forced coughs,” according to the paper’s authors.They instead used multi-task learning. The second task was biometric speaker verification among four subjects from a dataset of natural, in-the-wild coughing.The algorithm bested humans doing the same task by 9.8 percent, according to the authors.Ultimately, the researchers found that they can on average outperform human listeners on the four-way classification task with 10 enrollment samples.A researcher behind a similar paper published earlier this year told Wired that while the algorithms can have practical value for health applications, but may need further development to be used as a biometric.

Europe has had a difficult 2022: The war in Ukraine has brought a flood of refugees to the European Union nation-states while policymakers have been trying to tackle major technological advances. A new report by the EU Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA) lays out the effects that these developments have had on human rights, including an analysis of European IT systems that rely on personal information such as biometric data.The EU is developing six large-scale IT systems designed to process personal data of third-country nationals, including biometric data. They are designed to support border management, asylum procedures and internal security.The Vienna-based agency has an advisory role within the EU. In its report, published on Thursday, FRA outlined recommendations to establish a mechanism for an independent review of its large-scale IT system. A role model for the mechanism could be the Independent Reviewer of Terrorism Legislation in the United Kingdom.“Numerous safeguards embedded in EU law are intended to mitigate the risks of fundamental rights violations, provided they are adequately implemented,” says the FRA report “However, the EU IT systems are just coming into operation, and we are still discovering how several aspects work together. Their potentially vast impact on fundamental rights therefore remains partly unknown.”Multiple EU agencies are currently finalizing the regulation of three new IT systems with a deadline set at the end of this year. This includes the Entry/Exit System (EES), the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) and the European Criminal Records Information System for Third-Country Nationals (ECRIS-TCN).The EU is also working on making its IT systems interoperable with the help of its eu-LISA agency ( European Union Agency for the Operational Management of Large-Scale IT Systems in the Area of Freedom, Security and Justice).One example of this interoperability is detecting multiple identities with the help of biometric data. Currently, this task is handled by EU border agency Frontex and EU member states with member states expected to take over in the future. However, several states, including Belgium, Demark and Czechia, have issued complaints, opinions and investigations over data privacy and issues such as errors in matching.FRA said that it aims to launch an online awareness-raising tool to provide information on the EU’s IT systems in early 2024.The agency also raised questions about the Passenger Name Records (PNR) Directive which aims to regulate the transfer of PNR data from the airlines to national authorities, as well as their processing of this data.“The PNR Directive entails serious interferences with the rights to privacy and data protection, as it seeks to introduce a surveillance regime that is continuous, untargeted, and systematic, including the automated assessment of all air passengers’ personal data. Given that, EU fundamental rights law requires that authorities’ powers provided for by the directive be limited to what is strictly necessary,” FRA says in the report.

In a digital world that connects everyone for everything, establishing global interoperability across entities, sectors, and countries becomes an imperative.I want to emphasize the importance and the meaning of “being open,” a guiding message of Dr. Joseph Atick for the ID4Africa Annual General Meeting Segment 3 on Interoperability.I recall how in 2018, ID4Africa began raising awareness about the urgency of breaking silos, addressing vendor lock-in, and fostering inclusion. However, it was the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic that forced us to realize that these aspirations must be more than wishes.During the ID4Africa 2023 AGM, we heard insightful experiences from countries such as India, Pakistan, Gabon, Somalia, and many others. These nations recognize the urgency of building mutualized and open infrastructures that can support digital services in both public and private sectors.As highlighted by Pramod Varda during the ID4Africa conference, governments need to “Think Infrastructure,” they cannot embark on full-scale digital transformation alone. Instead, they must adopt an infrastructure-oriented approach, focusing on building enablers and allowing public and private entities to create solutions on top of them.The need for global interoperability“BEING OPEN” is a prerequisite for achieving global interoperability in between infrastructures and solutions and the ID4Africa 2023 AGM’s Segment 3 participants unanimously agreed that interoperability is of utmost importance and should rely on standards.While we witnessed various approaches during the AGM, such as OSIA, MOSIP, GovStack, G2P Connect, and India Stack, there remains a need for convergence among these different initiatives.And currently, there is no complete consensus on globally agreed interoperability standards, despite addressing the same objective of building DPIs. There should be convergence to avoid countries having to make a choice.In my unique position, at the intersection of several key initiatives, I can see the gaps also understand the obstacles. I trust I am well-equipped to facilitate convergence among these efforts.For achieving global interoperability, we can analyze the enabling factors of successful convergence initiatives.Firstly, OpenID Connect was highlighted as a consensus for interoperability of identity verification during the AGM. It is widely adopted globally because it is simple, it uses common technologies, sector-agnostic, and already in use across various domains. As Gail Hodges, executive director at the OpenID Foundation, aptly said, OpenID Connect is “everybody’s friend.”Secondly, the rise of Digital Wallets and the support for W3C Verifiable Credentials presented during the AGM will contribute to progress in global interoperability. These credentials are simple to issue and use with common devices, providing security, privacy protection, and sector-agnostic capabilities.Lastly, GovStack applies the best principles and integrates the best worldwide approaches to design technology-agnostic and interoperable Building Block specifications. We have received contributions from esteemed entities such as Estonia, India, Europe, the UK, Singapore, and various countries in Africa. With a holistic government approach, our aim is to prioritize interoperability before seeking specific solutions. The involvement of the International Telecommunication Union adds the necessary legitimacy and relevance to foster the emergence of required global interoperability.Conclusion-In conclusion, the success of interoperability standards is directly linked to their simplicity and public availability of required technologies.Furthermore, hosting these standards under a technology-agnostic body has proven to be effective.It is worth noting that global interoperability is not achieved by imposing solutions but rather emerging from a consensual open debate.Recommendations-1/ As we move forward, it is crucial for governments to approach identity as an infrastructure rather than as a standalone solution. 2/ Global interoperability will not be built solely by good leaders but by good listeners, fostering a “being open” mindset.3/ To facilitate the establishment of global interoperability, it is vital that non-solution providers take the lead and align their efforts with governments.Entities like GovStack, the OpenID Foundation, and ID4Africa are well-suited to host and moderate the emergence of these global standards.Together, let us embrace openness, collaboration, and interoperability to unlock the full potential of digital transformation for all.About the author-I’m Jaume Dubois, the CEO of ID30, a public digital transformation advisory company. In a wave of digital transformations across multiple nations, Japan has faced challenges with its My Number digital ID system, Australia has introduced a new strategic plan for payments, and India’s Aadhaar authentication has expanded support for Google Pay with a new feature.130k Japan My Number IDs linked to incorrect bank accounts-Japan’s ‘My Number’ national digital ID system has encountered new issues as it was discovered that multiple IDs were mistakenly linked to family members’ bank accounts instead of their rightful holders.According to NHK reporting, the country’s Digital Agency conducted an inspection of approximately 54 million My Number IDs associated with bank accounts for various benefits. The agency identified roughly 130,000 cases where an individual’s My Number ID was linked to a family member’s bank account.Additionally, they also discovered 748 cases where bank accounts were erroneously connected to a stranger’s ID.The Digital Agency plans to address these issues with revised legislation by June 2025 as it considers the development of a new system for accurate name matching.Digital Transformation Minister Kono Taro apologized on Wednesday and urged prompt corrections for those who registered their bank accounts incorrectly.Australia publishes new strategic plan for payment systems-The Australian government has released a new strategic plan to transform the country’s payments system into a modern, world-class, and efficient platform.Key priorities include strengthening cybersecurity defenses, reducing scams and fraud, updating the payments regulatory framework, phasing out cheques, upgrading payment systems, and maintaining access to cash.The plan also emphasizes promoting competition, productivity, and innovation across the economy via initiatives like aligning payment objectives with the Consumer Data Right framework and supporting the country’s broader use of digital IDs, which was identified by stakeholders as “a key digital economy initiative that could help build trust in the payments system.”The report added that digital ID “will be a key enabler of the digital economy, driving greater efficiency in online interactions by streamlining identity verification processes.”In the 2023-24 fiscal year, the Government has allocated a significant investment of AU$26.9 million (US$18.2 million) to expand its digital ID efforts.To ensure relevance in a rapidly evolving landscape, the Australian government also said it committed to reviewing and updating the strategic plan every 18 months.Google Pay introduces Aadhaar-based UPI activation-Google Pay has introduced a new feature for Indian users that enables them to set their UPI (Unified Payments Interface) PIN without a debit card service, instead using their Aadhaar number.From a technical standpoint, the feature requires users to link their mobile phone number, bank account, and Aadhaar number together. A privacy agency in the Irish government has collected face scans from 3.2 million residents over 10 years without telling them the reason for doing so or even providing a legal rationale for doing so.Further, individuals’ biometric records are being stored in a centralized database for 10 years past the end of their life.Some of those residents allegedly have been children. All allegations reportedly violate European Union law.According to a 2021 data protection impact assessment filed by the Department of Social Protection and co-authored by business services firm KPMG, face-matching reduces fraud that involves the nation’s public-services card program, which has been plagued by biometrics concerns and miscommunication.The Irish Council for Civil Liberties recently got a copy of the document after filing a Freedom of Information request. Leaders of the group say that document makes it clear that, at least since 2021, Social Protection officials have known they are violating Article 9 of the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation. Article 9 stipulates a narrow range of circumstances in which biometrics and other special category data can be processed without the explicit consent of the data subject.Antoin O Lachtnain, director Digital Right Ireland, another public advocacy group, told the Irish Legal News that another government agency, the Data Protection Commission, has been investigating face-matching associated with the card “for a number of years.”

Tech5 has launched a digital security capability using biometrics to guard against the substitution or manipulation of the facial image on a printed identity document.The new T5-FaceLink feature can be used in various scenarios to provide assurance that the document is genuine and belongs to the bearer, without requiring any special tools, according to the company announcement.A high-density code that contains a biometric representation of the face is printed on the document, alongside the photo, with both captured to complete verification. Tech5’s software compares the two in real-time.Despite the several levels of protection built into printed ID documents to protect against forgery and theft, Tech5 Co-founder, Chairman and CTO Rahul Parthe says that fraudulent documents with swapped photos remain a significant fraud threat.“Inspired by the T5-Digital ID’s features and advantages and combining it with our identity market expertise, we developed T5-FaceLink to improve document security,” says Parthe. “It allows linking the photo on the document to the security feature, proving the authenticity using digital signature and additionally biometrically verifying the holder of the ID directly against the document (if required), unlocking additional verification capability for offline use cases.”T5-FaceLink can also hold a digital signature asserting the documents legitimacy. The technology can also be added to existing ID documents to upgrade their protection against fraud without replacing them or adding an electronic chip storing the user’s biometrics.“The protection of identity documents from photo substitution becomes more important with the increased use of ID documents in remote/unattended eKYC scenarios increasingly used by banks, telcos, enterprises, healthcare providers, and governments,” says Tech5 Strategy Advisor Rob Haslam. “We believe that T5-FaceLink is an answer to solving the fraud problem involving the use of documents with swapped photographs for both online and offline verification use cases.”The new feature is currently being tested in several national-level identity projects in the Middle East.Tech5’s projects in the region include remote voter identity verification in Oman.

By as early as March 2024, Japan’s Seven Bank will allow customers to make deposits and withdrawals using facial recognition at roughly 20,000 ATMs in Seven-Elevens nationally, said the bank’s president Masaaki Matsuhashi, according to Nikkei.The service will be the first of its kind in Japan, according to Nikkei. Located inside Seven-Elevens throughout Japan, the bank is a unit of the convenience store’s parent company Seven & i Holdings.To activate facial authentication, customers must link their account information to their biometrics at a Seven Bank ATM. They will receive a unique ID card that will be required at future transactions as an added security measure. Customers will no longer need to use their cash card for account openings, withdrawals and deposits.They will also be able to retrieve government benefits “without the need for a bank account,” according to a company statement. This feature was already implemented in some areas, with Shibuya City in Tokyo involving the technology in its childbirth grant program.Roughly 13,000, or half, of all Seven Bank ATMs already have face biometric technology. An additional 6,000 are projected to be replaced this year with a new model that NEC, a Japanese tech company, developed in 2019. NEC began providing a facial recognition cashless payment system for Japan’s Seven-Elevens back in 2020.Because Seven Bank relies on ATM fees from other banking institutions, it will encourage other banks to adopt similar technology so they can allow their customers to use facial recognition at Seven Bank ATMs.“We will work to further expand the value provided by ATMs as a new social infrastructure that is close and convenient, and reliable and safe,” says the company in the statement.

NEW YORK (AP) — Images of smoke obscuring the New York skyline and the Washington Monument this week have given the world a new picture of the perils of wildfire, far from where blazes regularly turn skies into hazardous haze.A third day of unhealthy air from Canadian wildfires may have been an unnerving novelty for millions of people on the US East Coast, but it was a reminder of conditions routinely troubling the country’s West — and a wake-up call about the future, scientists say.“This is kind of an astounding event” but likely to become more common amid global warming, said Justin Mankin, a Dartmouth College geography professor and climate scientist. “This is something that we, as the eastern side of the country, need to take quite seriously.”Millions of residents could see that for themselves Thursday. The conditions sent asthma sufferers to hospitals, delayed flights, postponed ballgames and even pushed back a White House Pride Month celebration. The fires sent plumes of fine particulate matter as far away as North Carolina and northern Europe and parked clumps of air rated unhealthy or worse over the heavily populated Eastern Seaboard.At points this week, air quality in places including New York, the nation’s most populous city, nearly hit the top of the US Environmental Protection Agency’s air pollution scale. In the midst of a disturbing rise in hate crimes targeting the LGBTQ2S+ community across Canada, another violent incident has left everyone shocked.Ottawa Centre MPP Joel Harden was assaulted by an anti-trans protestor while attending a rally in support of queer and trans rights in Ottawa Friday morning.Harden, who recently spoke at the Ontario Legislation on Thursday about the importance of protection for queer and trans youth as the country celebrates Pride Month, was punched several times by the anti-trans protestor.Harden has been attending rallies and protests for over thirty years now, he says.He attended the Broadview rally on Friday morning to support queer and trans youth, and potentially de-escalate any violent situation as events have been targeted by anti-trans protestors in the past."We held a part of the street far away from schools as we did not want to be protesting in front of schools, so we gathered near where they said they would gather," Harden said.Police were also on hand to ensure public safety.Harden estimated around eighty anti-trans protestors at the rally, screaming and coming close to the young people in an attempt to start fights. Although he wasn't comfortable sharing some of the things said, he did say some of them were "absolutely vile".I felt something really bad was going to happenJoel Harden, Ottawa Centre MPPHarden said that out of the corner of his eye, he noticed a woman berating another individual and had her hands in the person's hair. Archaeologists discover and replicate earliest musical instrument in the Middle East-Tiny 12,000-year-old bone hunting flute likely used to attract birds of prey for Natufian settlements in Hula Valley-By Melanie Lidman 9 June 2023, 2:11 pm

Archaeologists are hearing for the first time how humans made music some 12,000 years ago, by recreating a flute that was likely used to hunt ducks and other small birds in northern Israel.On Friday, a team of Israeli and French researchers published an article about the recreated bone flute in the peer-reviewed Nature Scientific Report, offering an auditory window into how early humans shifted from hunter-gatherers to more settled villages, creating the earliest known musical instruments ever discovered in the Middle East.The French-Israeli team of archaeologists discovered fragments of seven different flutes, dating to around 10,000 BCE, which is the largest collection of prehistoric sound-producing instruments ever found in the Levant. The pieces were found at the Eynan/Ain Mallaha site, a small village some 35 km (20 miles) north of the Sea of Galilee. The site was inhabited from 12,000 BCE to 8,000 BCE, around the time when humans were undergoing a massive revolution from nomadic hunter-gatherers to more sedentary, semi-settled communities.Dr. Laurent Davin, a post-doctoral fellow at Hebrew University, was examining some of the bones recovered from the site when he noticed tiny holes drilled at regular intervals along a few of the bones. At first, experts had dismissed the holes as regular wear and tear on the delicate bird bones. But Davin examined the bones more closely and noticed that the holes were at very even intervals, and clearly created by humans.“One of the flutes was discovered complete, and so far as is known it is the only one in the world in this state of preservation,” Davin said in a press release that accompanied the article’s publication.Dr. Hamoudi Khalaily, a senior researcher with the IAA, spent 10 years excavating at the Eynan site and was instrumental in creating a replica of the extant flute.“There were a lot of doubts that this was even possible [to recreate], but the replica was created exactly [in the same way] as the original and it allowed us to hear what people would have heard 12,000 years ago,” Khalaily told The Times of Israel.“When we first heard it, it gave us this feeling like, we are really doing something for history,” Khalaily said.The recreated flute produces a screeching, breathy whistling sound that Khalaily and the team believe could be an imitation of predator birds, including falcons, which eat small waterfowl.“The sound could have attracted predator birds, which creates chaos with the other birds, and then it’s very easy to catch them, even with your hands,” explained Khalaily.Previously, nomadic hunter-gathers had focused on bigger game such as gazelles, rabbits, or foxes. But when humans began settling in the Hula Valley for the first time, they started taking advantage of new food sources, including fish and smaller waterfowl in the lake that used to stretch across the Hula Valley.Today, the Hula Valley is still a major conduit for bird migration in the late fall when tens of thousands of birds pass through Israel on their way from Europe to Africa. The Hula Valley was once covered by water, with a 13 square kilometer (5 square mile) lake and 47 square kilometers (18 square miles) of seasonal swamps. Early Zionist pioneers drained the swamp in the early 20th century as a major infrastructure project to create more agricultural land and to combat malaria.A trove of bird bones-At the Eynan site, archaeologists are excavating a small Natufian village, which was a Mesolithic culture in the Levant and Western Asia around 9000 BCE. It’s a unique time because the culture emerged when humans started living a semi-sedentary lifestyle predating the agricultural revolution, meaning they had to find regular food sources in the same area even before they knew how to cultivate them. Once humans became more settled, their culture underwent dramatic societal change including the appearance of burial practices, art, and durable structures.The Eynan site was first excavated by a French mission in 1955 and later from 1996–2005 by a joint team from Israel and France directed by François Valla of the Centre Nationale de Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) and Khalaily of the Israel Antiquities Authority.Excavations at the site are ongoing and it can take years to methodically sift through all of the earth removed from a site and search for fragments of tools, animal bones, or other detritus from daily life thousands of years ago. Over the past two decades, careful sifting has yielded 1,112 bird bones from the Eynan site.The bone flute was researched and recreated by a team of French and Israeli experts, consisting of archaeologists and archaeozoologists, who study animal bones, ethnomusicologists, paleo-organologists (the research of ancient sound-making instruments), and technical experts that were able to find ways to recreate the exact placement of the finger holes.The original flutes, also called aerophones because they are an instrument that produces sound due to vibrating air, were made from the hollow wing bones of the Eurasian teal and the Eurasian coot. The current replica was made from the wing bones of two female mallard ducks “because of the difficulty in obtaining carcasses of Eurasian coot (Fulica atra) used by the Natufians,” the article stated.The tinier the bone, the more difficult it is to play. The researchers believe the bones were chosen specifically to mimic the calls of the Eurasian Sparrowhawk and the Common Kestrel, two birds of prey that were widespread in the Hula Valley.The flute represents the oldest musical instrument found locally, but it is not the oldest aerophone that has been discovered. Most of the known Paleolithic sound-making instruments are found in Europe, and the oldest dates to around 40,000 years ago, which was found in southwestern Germany, made from bird bone and mammoth ivory.Previous to this discovery, the only known “music” or sound production during the Paleolithic and Neolithic periods in the Levant was from a few studies suggesting that humans could have developed a belt of bone pendants that clacked and rattled, or possibly a bone whistle (flute with no fingerholes).The flute represents an important discovery, but it’s not music to everyone’s ears.“I heard it for the first time on Youtube, and it’s really a terrible tone, it’s high and pitchy and not nice at all to my ear,” said Prof. Rivka Rabinovich, the scientific director of archeozoological collections at the National Natural History Collections at the Hebrew University. Rabinovich, an expert in studying and interpreting the remains of ancient mammal bones has been studying the discoveries from the Eynan site for years.Rabinovich added that there’s no way of knowing whether ancient humans had a similar cringe reaction when they heard it; whether it was used for hunting, communication, or making music.But it opens a window into a fascinating point in human development, the complexity of society and their ability to make tools. The small finger holes in the flute were drilled with the talon of a larger bird, likely a falcon. Archaeologists believe that talons also had spiritual significance to early humans, Khalaily said.“It’s very interesting because this is just at the starting point of people becoming more sedentary,” Rabinovich said. “It’s a very exciting period at which to understand the day-to-day life and also larger questions beyond day-to-day life, and why they did certain things.”She credited the discovery to the large and varied French-Israeli team, which united researchers and archaeologists with areas of expertise in niche areas like reconstructing bone tools and interpreting scratches made in animal bones.“The message from this is that you really need to save everything [excavated from a site] because you always see these things with new eyes and new tools,” she said. “It takes a long time to sift through things, and when you look at it anew, you can see it differently. That’s because there’s continually new research, there’s continually new technology, and new ways to investigate new information. And it all works together to create a more complete picture of what happened there.”
