CBC-Police assuage council's fears about Rolling Thunder rally-Wed, April 27, 2022, 12:28 p.m

Ottawa's acting police chief and the city's head of emergency services assured council Wednesday they'll do what they can to keep an impending weekend motorcycle rally from turning into another long-term occupation.Unlike the Freedom Convoy, which arrived in the city in late January and stayed for weeks, "Rolling Thunder Ottawa" isn't specifically promoting a petition for changing COVID-19 rules.Rather, the rally has aligned itself with groups with various motives, including a veterans' group aimed at restoring "fundamental rights and freedoms" and a non-profit dedicated to the "end of all tyrannical bills and legislation."They plan to hold a Friday evening demonstration on Parliament Hill, a Saturday morning service at the National War Memorial, another Saturday afternoon Hill demonstration and a Sunday church service in Vanier.Ottawa police have already announced vehicles involved in the demonstration won't be permitted inside an exclusionary zone around Parliament Hill and the ByWard Market. Normal residential and business traffic — both vehicle and pedestrian — will be allowed.Speaking inside council chambers Wednesday, acting police chief Steve Bell said residents would see a large police presence, with officers from Ottawa police, other municipal forces, the Ontario Provincial Police and RCMP out on neighbourhood streets.Police are planning for more than 500 motorcycles on the streets, Bell said. A "heavy" contingent of officers would monitor the Saturday afternoon ride, he said, with tow trucks and physical barriers available should they be needed.Any display of swastikas or other hateful symbols during the weekend would lead to charges, Bell said."I want to be clear with both organizers and participants: you will be held accountable for your actions before, during and after events," he said.According to a statement posted on their website, Rolling Thunder Ottawa does not "support blockades, obstruction of police performing their duties, damage to property, or hate and vitriol directed to the residents of Ottawa."Trying to find 'least intrusive' route-Several city councillors close to the downtown expressed concerns about maps being floated on social media, suggesting the rally might descend on residential streets in their wards."[They've] laid down areas on Sunnyside, laid down areas on Hopewell — where there's a large school with 900 students and a community centre. I'm seeing laid-down areas at the RA Centre as well as through Old Ottawa East and on to Bronson," said Capital ward Coun. Shawn Menard."What is the plan for the protection of residential areas when this is occurring?"We can work to find the least intrusive, least offensive way for our community — and the safest way — to actually move those bikes through the city. - Acting police chief Steve Bell-Police are still talking with city staff about adding to the existing exclusionary zone, Bell said."There are bikes attending our city this weekend. And we absolutely have no ability to prevent that from happening," said the acting chief, replying to a question from Rideau-Vanier Coun. Mathieu Fleury about concerns the bikers could flood Rideau Street and Montreal Road."What we can do is we can work to find the least intrusive, least offensive way for our community — and the safest way — to actually move those bikes through the city."As for the Saturday ride, Bell told council it would roll through "a portion of the city" before exiting along Nicholas Street to Highway 417.He told reporters after the meeting the official route would likely be released Thursday or Friday.Transit should run normally-The City of Ottawa, meanwhile, has said it will have bylaw officers out enforcing the rules during the weekend. Those include expanded parking restrictions, a Tuesday news release said, and any vehicles found in no-stopping zones will be ticketed and/or towed.Staff are still finalizing traffic management plans, said general manager of emergency and protective services Kim Ayotte. Workers would be out installing barriers and no-stopping signs both inside and outside the current exclusionary zone, he told council.I know I'm going to be out on the street all weekend as well, watching and reporting. - Somerset Coun. Catherine McKenneyFor the moment, OC Transpo buses and the LRT are expected to run normally, Ayotte said.Plans are in place to ensure Sunday's CN Cycle for CHEO, an annual bike ride to raise money to fight childhood cancer, would go ahead safely, he added."The city understands any motor vehicle-based event is a cause for trauma and anxiety within the community," Ayotte said.Somerset Coun. Catherine McKenney, whose ward was the epicentre for the Freedom Convoy protests, said comments from officials at council left them feeling the likelihood of another downtown occupation was "much, much less likely."Still, McKenney planned to keep a close eye on the weekend's events — as would the ward's residents."They're not going to take it lightly. And I know I'm going to be out on the street all weekend as well, watching and reporting and hoping to take immediate action on anything that is a threat to any of our residential neighbourhoods."

The Canadian PressThe Canadian Press-Up to 831 RCMP officers approved to join Ottawa police as motorcycle convoy arrives-Wed, April 27, 2022, 6:18 p.m

OTTAWA — The Ottawa police services board has approved the appointment of up to 831 RCMP officers to help municipal police, who are promising a heavy presence in the capital and zero tolerance for hate this weekend.Ottawa police asked the board to approve the expedited appointment of "up to 200" additional officers as they prepare for a second convoy, this time involving hundreds of motorcycles instead of trucks. As many as 631 RCMP members who were appointed to help end the downtown blockade in February could also be reappointed as needed. The Ottawa Police Service says it's asking for those appointments to expire on July 4 "in anticipation of additional events and demonstrations." They typically last five years.Interim police chief Steve Bell told Ottawa city councillors earlier on Wednesday that his force has no intention of letting the “Rolling Thunder Convoy” turn into another illegal occupation, and that officers will act quickly when they see any wrongdoing.“Threatening or intimidating behaviours will be addressed with all appropriate enforcement action,” Bell said.“Investigative teams, including our hate crime unit, are in place focused on gathering evidence and laying charges where appropriate. The display of symbols of hate like swastikas will result in charges.”The chief also sought to reassure residents still shaken by the “Freedom Convoy,” in which hundreds of protesters occupied the downtown core for three weeks to protest COVID-19 restrictions and demand the Liberal government resign. The occupation disrupted traffic, forced businesses to close, and sparked complaints of intimidation, harassment and hateful conduct. Relentless honking of air horns from big rigs disturbed residents for days. Police chief Peter Sloly resigned after many criticized police for not taking a harder line with the protesters. The demonstration, which also disrupted several border crossings with the United States, ended after the federal Liberal government invoked the Emergencies Act, and police moved in to detain and arrest dozens of people. In a message directed to Ottawa residents, Bell said the police won't "allow for unsafe or unlawful conditions that could lead to another protest."“We’ve heard your concerns,” he said. “We know that you are still healing from the disruption and criminality."The Rolling Thunder group has not been clear about the cause they’re rallying for, except to say that they will be in Ottawa to “peacefully celebrate our freedom.”The website for “Rolling Thunder Ottawa” said it is partnered with the groups Veterans for Freedom and Freedom Fighters Canada, both of which appear to have links to the Freedom Convoy.Veterans for Freedom describes itself on its website as a group made up of Canadian veterans working to “restore fundamental freedoms for all Canadians” and “uphold Canadian laws.”The members of that group’s steering committee all have ties to the earlier protests, including one who was among the convoy’s spokespeople. Others appeared in YouTube videos supporting convoy demonstrators.Freedom Fighters Canada’s website says it is an organization “demanding the end of all government mandates” and the end of “tyrannical legislation.” Some of its organizers also attended or supported the earlier protests publicly.Bell told councillors that police are in touch with the Rolling Thunder organizers, who expect more than 500 motorcycles to arrive in the city. The force is also working with the RCMP and intelligence agencies to identify potential threats.“Residents will see a large police presence, including bylaw and parking enforcement officers,” he added. “There will be a significant increase in officers from the Ontario Provincial Police, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and other municipal police jurisdictions.”Convoy organizers have said they plan to do a loop around the city, with a stop at the National War Memorial as well as a march and rally on Parliament Hill where speeches will be delivered.Police won't let protesters bring their bikes onto the streets around Parliament Hill, setting up a potential conflict, but Bell told councillors there is no plan to erect a fence around the National War Memorial.Freedom Convoy protesters were criticized for standing on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and parking their trucks on the site during the first week of the occupation. Fences were installed but later torn down by demonstrators.Several councillors representing areas around the downtown core raised concerns about reports convoy participants plan to set up in or ride through different neighbourhoods, and asked what police plan to do about it.There were also concerns about the ride interfering with a major bicycle fundraiser for the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, which is scheduled for Saturday.Bell indicated police would be keeping close tabs on the Rolling Thunder convoy during its ride through the city, backed up with tow trucks and physical barriers. Police also plan to have “quick response teams” ready to respond to emergencies, he said.Downtown Ottawa councillor Catherine McKenney told Bell that residents are nervous and “they’re also fed up. And residents that I’m hearing from are not going to take any incursion into their neighbourhoods by white supremacist, racist, extreme groups of people.”This report by The Canadian Press was first published April 27, 2022.Lee Berthiaume and Sarah Ritchie, The Canadian Press

Rebel News is suing Justin Trudeau-Trudeau’s hand-picked censors declare that only 1% of what Rebel News publishes is news and won’t give us a government news licence — we are fighting back, but we need your help. By Ezra Levant | April 07, 2022 | Advocacy

Justin Trudeau’s hand-picked government censorship panel has just declared that Rebel News journalists are not “qualified” to be news media. We just learned, that over the past year, Trudeau has spent countless tax dollars on a hand-picked team of government censors who were “studying” Rebel News in secret — they never reached out to us or spoke with us or interviewed us.And that secretive government censorship panel went through 276 of our news stories. They took nearly a year to do it. Imagine government censors looking through 276 Rebel News stories — many of which criticized those same government censors. Now, you can like Rebel News or not; that’s your choice. If you don’t like us, unlike the CBC, you don’t still have to pay for us. But Trudeau’s government censorship panel made a ruling about us.They declared — get this — that, quote “less than 1% of the content meets the criteria for original news content.”Huh? That’s almost all we do. We’re Rebel News, not Rebel Sports or Rebel Weather. So Trudeau's government censorship panel says, because of that, we are not legally a, quote, “qualified Canadian journalism organization” — or QCJO as they call it. That’s a special legal term they’ve come up with. As the words plainly mean, it’s government journalism accreditation. It’s a government journalism licence. So, not only does that mean we’re not allowed to attend government press conferences, it also punishes us under Income Tax Act.Click here to read the letter sent to us by Trudeau's government censorship panel:So Rebel News is fighting back. Because if we don’t fight back now they’re going to destroy us — like Trudeau is doing more and more to his peaceful political opponents. He wants to try to do to us what he did to the truckers — if he had his way he’d put us in jail and seize our bank accounts. This is a step in that direction — having a government panel declare, legally, that our journalists are not actually journalists.Because if they can do this to us, their largest independent critic left, they’ll do this to anyone. They’ll censor you. Which is why we have to fight back now — not later, right now. There might not even be a later. So we’re suing Trudeau. We filed the lawsuit today in the Federal Court of Canada. Please read our lawsuit to learn just what they’ve done to us — and why we have to fight back by clicking here:The outcome of that lawsuit will affect us, obviously. But it will affect everyone. Anyone in Canada who wants to do journalism without government censorship. And every citizen in Canada who wants the freedom to choose their own choice of news, without some secret government panel deciding what is or isn’t real news.I don’t know if there are other journalists who are being censored; I know if they succeed, we won’t be the last. I think we’re likely the only ones who can and will fight back. Good news is, we’ve got an absolute top-notch legal team.Because we can’t take any chances — so please please help us crowdfund our lawyers by donating on this page. You can also sign our petition calling on Pablo Rodriguez, the minister of Canadian heritage, to scrap the QCJO by clicking here.https://www.rebelnews.com/petition_pablo_rodriguez_must_abandon_his_qcjo_status

The RCMP seriously considered charging Justin Trudeau with fraud-Ezra discusses a story in the Globe and Mail revealing the RCMP seriously considered charging Justin Trudeau with fraud over his 2016 Aga Khan trip — a story that was later changed by the news outlet to run cover for the prime minister.-By Rebel News | April 27, 2022 | News Analysis

On last night's episode of The Ezra Levant Show, we looked at a story in the Globe and Mail revealing that the RCMP seriously considered charging Justin Trudeau with fraud over his 2016 Aga Khan trip — a story that was later changed by the news outlet to run cover for the prime minister. Here's a bit of what Ezra had to say:Here’s a story from the Globe and Mail yesterday. Here’s how it looked in the printed version: “RCMP considered whether to charge PM over Aga Khan Trip; Police ultimately decided rules were unclear about Trudeau’s ability to approve his own vacation."    ... That’s what the headline and story looked like at first. But I see this happening a lot, especially with news media that take money from Justin Trudeau. The original headline is changed — at least online, if it can’t be changed in the print edition that's already gone out the door. And since most people read the online version these days, it’s like the original never existed. So here’s what the headline of that same story looks like now: Trudeau faces backlash in House over inquiry into Aga Khan trip-So the news isn’t anymore that Trudeau was facing criminal charges — it wasn't even mentioned in the headline. No; now that news is that there's some awful backlash by those lashing-back Conservatives.
