ZECHARIAH 12:1-5 King James Bible
1 The burden of the word of the LORD for Israel, saith the LORD, which stretcheth forth the heavens, and layeth the foundation of the earth, and formeth the spirit of man within him.
2 Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem.
3 And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it.
4 In that day, saith the LORD, I will smite every horse with astonishment, and his rider with madness: and I will open mine eyes upon the house of Judah, and will smite every horse of the people with blindness.
5 And the governors of Judah shall say in their heart, The inhabitants of Jerusalem shall be my strength in the LORD of hosts their God.

JOEL 3:2 (WW3 OCCURS WHEN JERUSALEM IS DIVIDED)
2 I will also gather all nations, and will bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat, and will plead with them there for my people (ISRAEL) and for my heritage Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations, and parted my land.(JERUSALEM)(WW3 STARTS BECAUSE JERUSALEM IS DIVIDED AND ISRAELIS UPROOTED FROM THEIR GOD GIVIN LAND BRINGS 3 DEAD BILLION IN WW3)

JERUSALEM DIVIDED
GENESIS 25:20-26
20  And Isaac was forty years old (A BIBLE GENERATION NUMBER=1967 + 40=2007+) when he took Rebekah to wife, the daughter of Bethuel the Syrian of Padanaram, the sister to Laban the Syrian.
21  And Isaac intreated the LORD for his wife, because she was barren: and the LORD was intreated of him, and Rebekah his wife conceived.
22  And the children (2 NATIONS IN HER-ISRAEL-ARABS) struggled together within her; and she said, If it be so, why am I thus? And she went to enquire of the LORD.
23  And the LORD said unto her, Two nations are in thy womb, and two manner of people shall be separated from thy bowels;(ISRAEL AND THE ARABS) and the one people shall be stronger than the other people;(ISRAEL STRONGER THAN ARABS) and the elder shall serve the younger.(LITERALLY ISRAEL THE YOUNGER RULES (ISSAC)(JACOB-LATER NAME CHANGED TO ISRAEL) OVER THE OLDER ARABS (ISHMAEL)(ESAU)
24  And when her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb.
25  And the first came out red, all over like an hairy garment; and they called his name Esau.(THE OLDER AN ARAB)
26  And after that came his brother out, and his hand took hold on Esau's heel; and his name was called Jacob:(THE YOUNGER-ISRAELI) and Isaac was threescore (60) years old when she bare them.(1967 + 60=2027)(COULD BE THE LAST GENERATION WHEN JERUSALEM IS DIVIDED AMOUNG THE 2 TWINS)(THE 2 TWINS WANT JERUSALEM-THE DIVISION OF JERUSALEM TODAY)(AND WHOS IN CONTROL OF JERUSALEM TODAY-THE YOUNGER ISSAC-JACOB-ISRAEL)(AND WHO WANTS JERUSALEM DIVIDED-THE OLDER,ESAU-ISHMAEL (THE ARABS)

ISAIAH 28:14-19 (THIS IS THE 7 YR TREATY COVENANT OF DANIEL 9:27)
14 Wherefore hear the word of the LORD, ye scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem.
15 Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:
16 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.17 Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.
18 And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.
19 From the time that it goeth forth it shall take you: for morning by morning shall it pass over, by day and by night: and it shall be a vexation only to understand the report.

1 THESSALONIANS 5:3
3 For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

HOSEA 4:1-3
11 Hear the word of the LORD, ye children of Israel: for the LORD hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land,(EARTH) because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land.
2  By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood.
3  Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein shall languish, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away.

ZEPHANIAH 1:2-3
2  I will utterly consume all things from off the land, saith the LORD.
3  I will consume man and beast; I will consume the fowls of the heaven, and the fishes of the sea, and the stumblingblocks with the wicked; and I will cut off man from off the land, saith the LORD.

ZECHARIAH 14:12-13
12 And this shall be the plague wherewith the LORD will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth.
13 And it shall come to pass in that day, that a great tumult from the LORD shall be among them; and they shall lay hold every one on the hand of his neighbour, and his hand shall rise up against the hand of his neighbour.(1/2-3 BILLION DIE IN WW3)

Criticism of prominent rabbi possibly scrubbed from internet due to fraud – report-Investigation finds someone linked to International Fellowship of Christians and Jews may have paid to have posts panning salaries of Yehiel Eckstein and his daughter Yael removed-By Ron Kampeas    24 February 2023, 9:49 am

JTA — Did someone associated with the late Rabbi Yehiel Eckstein’s nonprofit pay a company to remove criticism of his and his daughter’s salaries from the internet? That’s the question being raised by a recent Washington Post investigation into the allegedly fraudulent activities of a firm that launders clients’ online reputations. The large organization Eckstein founded, the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews, raises funds from evangelical Christians and other donors for impoverished Jews. It also facilitates Jewish emigration to Israel, including from Ukraine. Eckstein founded the group in 1983; he died in 2019.But the issue of his compensation came up last week in a Washington Post expose about a company that allegedly makes baseless claims to protect the reputations of public figures. The Post reviewed nearly 50,000 records of the company, Eliminalia, documenting its activities on behalf of almost 1,500 clients over six years. Some paid more than $200,000 for the company’s services. In the Eckstein case, Eliminalia is accused of demanding that the publishing platform WordPress erase two blog posts criticizing Yechiel and Yael Eckstein’s salaries as excessive, on the fraudulent basis that the posts were plagiarized from other sources. The blog posts were written by Geri Ungurean, whom the Post identifies as a 71-year-old retiree in Maryland, and who also appears to identify as a “Jewish Christian.” Both posts, published in 2015 and 2018, were titled “Why Christians Should Not Give Money to Rabbi Eckstein of IFCJ.”Publicly accessible tax documents show Eckstein’s total compensation in 2018 was more than $700,000, and that his daughter Yael Eckstein, who then served as executive vice president, earned more than $400,000. In 2019, the year the elder Eckstein died, his total compensation jumped to roughly $3 million, which an IFCJ spokesperson, Shavit Greenberg, said was due to a death benefit paid out to his widow. The nonprofit’s revenue in both years exceeded $100 million. A Haaretz article published in 2017 also questioned the size of Yechiel Eckstein’s salary. The top salaries of Jewish nonprofit executives and their employees has long been a topic of discussion and concern among Jewish groups. In 2017, the Forward counted 18 CEOs who were earning more than half a million dollars. The introduction to the survey said that since the Forward’s previous survey of CEO compensation, “the gender gap at Jewish non-profits has only widened and a few non-profit executives are receiving extraordinary payouts.” This year, a survey of Jewish nonprofit employees by Leading Edge, which focuses on workplace culture at Jewish groups, found that fewer than half of respondents said their “salary is fair relative to similar roles at my organization.”In a statement to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Greenberg said the organization “has never engaged Eliminalia or any firm that engages in unethical practices.”Greenberg’s statement added that the organization could not say whether Yehiel Eckstein paid for the service himself — though it did not rule that possibility out. If Eckstein did have a role in hiring Eliminalia, it would have been well before the company’s alleged activity on his behalf took place: The Post article made clear that Eliminalia was hired on the Ecksteins’ behalf in 2020, more than a year after the elder Eckstein died.“If there is a record of Rabbi Eckstein making such payment over five years ago, it was a personal decision made completely independent of The Fellowship,” Greenberg said. “Rabbi passed in 2019 and is the only one able to comment on the alleged payment to Eliminalia.”Asked about the discrepancy in dates, Greenberg wrote via email, “The Fellowship nor our current president has ever engaged with Eliminalia and had never heard of the company until the article.”The Post wrote the expose with the assistance of Forbidden Stories, a Paris-based consortium of investigative journalists. Forbidden Stories had obtained internal documents detailing Eliminalia’s methods. Eliminalia did not respond to the Post’s requests for comment, citing “business secrecy.”Eliminalia’s techniques, according to the Post, include burying negative stories in search results by supplanting them with positive ones from fake news sites — a practice that media watchdogs see as unethical, but not illegal. What is illegal is another practice: making false claims to web hosts that content on their sites has been previously published by other outlets, and is therefore copyright protected and should be erased. That, according to the Post, is how Eliminalia approached WordPress about Ungurean’s blog in 2020. Two companies claimed copyright of Ungurean’s 2015 and 2018 blog entries. According to the Post article, those companies show no sign of existing other than to make those claims.Eliminalia was paid roughly $6,400 for the action, the Post reported. Ungurean shared emails with the Post from Automattic, WordPress’s parent company, that said the company ignored the requests, finding them suspect.Nonetheless, the 2015 post disappeared. The 2018 post is still online. Automattic told Ungurean that someone using her log-in erased the 2015 post in January 2022. Ungurean told the Post she did not erase her content and believes her account was hacked. The Post compared two searches on Yahoo for “Yael Eckstein salary,” one in October 2020 and one from last month. On the 2020 search, the 2018 blog post by Ungurean shows up fifth; last month’s search did not turn up the blog post in its first 100 entries. Among the top posts, however, is an advertisement entitled “Yael Eckstein: Salary, Spending and the Non-Profit Double Standard,” in which the younger Eckstein posits that non-profit executives should get salaries commensurate with the for-profit sector.

First Jewish wedding held at Abrahamic Family House in UAE-Former assistant to President Trump, Avi Berkowitz, held his wedding at the Moses Ben Maimon Synagogue.By JN Reporter-February 23, 2023, 8:23 pm

The first Jewish wedding has been held at the newly inaugurated Abrahamic Family House in the United Arab Emirates.Former assistant to U.S. President Donald Trump, Avi Berkowitz, got married at the Moses Ben Maimon Synagogue, one of three houses of worship in the interfaith building in Abu Dhabi.Berkowitz worked alongside Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, who was the leading force behind the Abraham Accords, which saw Israel normalise ties with UAE and Bahrain. The Abrahamic Family House is the first of its kind in the Middle East and was designed by British architect, Sir David Adjaye. In 2019, Adjaye’s company was selected to design the Abrahamic Family House. “Essentially, the inspiration was to understand that the three religions really emanate from this extraordinary region,” Adjaye said last year. The synagogue features a main sanctuary, two mikvot, beit midrash and a residence for a young rabbinical couple who will live on site.Located in the Saadiyat cultural district in the capital of the United Arab Emirates, visitors are now welcome to pray in the three houses of worship whilst public access and guided tours will be available from 1 March.

Jordan to host Israel, Palestinians for Sunday summit in bid to restore calm-Meeting in Red Sea resort of Aqaba will also be attended by US and Egyptian representatives; Israel’s national security adviser, Shin Bet chief set to attend
By AFP, Jacob Magid and ToI Staff-FEB 25,23-Today, 7:30 pm

Jordan will on Sunday host a “political-security” meeting between Israel and the Palestinians to try and restore calm to the West Bank and the Gaza Strip after deadly violence, a Jordanian government official said. The meeting to be held in the Red Sea resort of Aqaba will also be attended by United States and Egyptian representatives. It aims at “building trust” between Israel and the Palestinians, the official told AFP on Saturday, speaking on condition of anonymity.Israel’s National Security Adviser Tzachi Hanegbi and Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar were expected to attend on the Israeli side. The talks will come after 11 Palestinians were killed and more than 80 wounded in a gun battle on Wednesday when Israeli troops raided the city of Nablus in the West Bank to arrest terror operatives. Palestinian terror groups said at least seven of those killed were their operatives. Another three were confirmed to have been civilians.Intensifying unrest this year has sparked international concern and follows violence in 2022 which was the deadliest in the West Bank since UN tracking began. It also comes ahead of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, a time of particular sensitivity in Jerusalem.“The political-security meeting is part of stepped-up ongoing efforts by Jordan in coordination with the Palestinian Authority and other parties to end unilateral measures [by Israel] and a security breakdown that could fuel more violence,” the Jordanian government official said.Palestinians clash with Palestinian security forces following an arrest raid in the West Bank city of Nablus Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2022. (AP/Nasser Nasser)-The talks aim to reach “security and economic measures to ease the hardships of the Palestinian people,” the official added.Channel 12 news reported that Israel had promised to Palestinian officials to limit entry into Palestinian towns in the near future in a bid to calm tensions.Saudi Arabia’s Asharq News reported that the PA team was expected to demand the cessation of Israeli raids and settlement activity, while seeking to reach an agreement with Palestinian armed groups to keep the calm. The summit is aimed at boosting Israeli-Palestinian security cooperation and solidifying understandings that had been reached earlier this week regarding the steps that the two sides would take in order to de-escalate tensions, a Palestinian source familiar with the matter said.A nearly year-long Israeli anti-terror offensive in the West Bank has left over 200 Palestinians dead — the vast majority in clashes with Israeli troops but some under more questionable circumstances — including 60 killed since the start of the year, straining already frayed ties. The campaign was launched last year to stem a rash of deadly attacks on Israelis: 31 were killed in 2022, and this year alone, 11 have been killed in Palestinian terror attacks in East Jerusalem — 10 civilians and one Border Police officer.Ramallah is supposed to send a delegation led by PA Civil Affairs Minister and PLO Secretary-General Hussein al-Sheikh along with PA intelligence chief Majed Faraj and PA President Mahmoud Abbas’s chief diplomatic adviser Majdi Khaldi, the source said. US National Security Council Middle East Coordinator Brett McGurk and Assistant Secretary for Near Eastern Affairs Barbara Leaf are slated to represent US President Joe Biden’s administration.Al-Sheikh and Hanegbi have established a covert line of communication, with formal contacts between Jerusalem and Ramallah essentially frozen. Despite the hardline nature of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition, Abbas dispatched al-Sheikh to create a backchannel with Jerusalem that would be used to maintain contact and prevent further deteriorations of ties. The backchannel has largely withstood the ongoing period of violence, and al-Sheikh and Hanegbi have held several in-person and virtual meetings, a Palestinian official said on Monday.Wednesday’s raid, the latest in a string of deadly military operations by Israel in the West Bank, came with Israel headed by a new coalition government regarded as the most right-wing in the country’s history.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who took office again in December, traveled in January to Amman for a rare meeting with King Abdullah II. The monarch stressed “the need to maintain calm and cease all acts of violence,” the royal palace said at the time.Abdullah also reaffirmed Jordan’s position in support of a two-state solution between Israel and the Palestinians to end the decades-old conflict. The conference is aimed at formalizing the Israeli agreement to hold off on authorizing additional settlement expansion for several months along with a similarly-timed commitment to ease IDF raids in Palestinian cities and demolitions or evictions of Palestinians from their homes. The Palestinian source said Ramallah is furious each of those commitments was breached this week and is demanding that the US press Israel to adhere to the agreement.

IAF chief wraps up first official trip to Morocco, in sign of growing defense ties-After visiting Moroccan airbase, Tomer Bar says the two air forces will ‘strengthen partnerships,’ hold joint air exercises-By Emanuel Fabian-24 February 2023, 6:24 pm

The chief of the Israeli Air Force, Maj. Gen. Tomer Bar, wrapped up a first official visit to Morocco on Friday, another sign of growing defense ties between Israel and the North African nation. After landing on Tuesday, Bar met with his counterpart, Gen. El Abed Alaoui Bouhamid, and visited the Ben Guerir Air Force Base, near the city of the same name, as well as the Moroccan Air Force headquarters and academy, the military said. The Israel Defense Forces said Bar and Bouhamid “welcomed the strengthening of the existing cooperation between the two armies and discussed key military issues, including the air defense, team exchanges, and joint aerial exercises.”“This is an exciting moment,” Bar said in remarks provided by the IDF, hailing Morocco for having “one of the most professional and advanced air forces.”“We will act and advance cooperation and common interests, we will strengthen partnerships in training and knowledge for the benefit of maintaining regional stability,” he added.Israel and Morocco established low-level diplomatic relations during the 1990s following Israel’s interim peace accords with the Palestinians, but those ties were suspended after the outbreak in 2000 of the Second Intifada.A breakthrough took place 20 years later when the Trump administration agreed to recognize Moroccan sovereignty over the disputed Western Sahara region in exchange for Rabat agreeing to normalize relations with Israel. Morocco was the third country to join what was dubbed as the Abraham Accords, following the leads of the UAE and Bahrain.Despite opposition from some sectors of the Moroccan public, ties have since continued to develop. In November 2021, then-defense minister Benny Gantz signed a memorandum of understanding with his Moroccan counterpart, the first such agreement between Israel and an Arab state. The agreement formalized the defense ties between the two countries, allowing for smoother cooperation between their defense establishments and making it easier for Israel to sell arms to the North African kingdom. With the signing of the MOU, the two countries’ defense ministries and militaries could more easily speak with one another and share intelligence, whereas before, such communication was only possible through their respective intelligence services.Last July, then-IDF chief Aviv Kohavi held a first official visit to Morocco, also meeting with air force officials.

Israeli experts removed, rebuilt top of iconic Tower of David amid fears of collapse-Channel 12 TV report details complex, highly sensitive renovation at ancient site alongside Jaffa Gate entrance to Jerusalem’s Old City-FEB 25,23-By David Horovitz    Today, 6:07 pm

Experts in recent months completely removed the top of Jerusalem’s iconic Tower of David and rebuilt it, using a mix of mainly new stones combined with salvaged original stones. In a television report aired Friday night on Channel 12, authorities revealed details of the highly sensitive work, carried out as unobtrusively as is possible for a structure that towers over the Jaffa Gate entrance to the Old City. The project was undertaken amid growing fears that the 400-year-old tower faced potential collapse, and that its top two meters in particular were in urgent need of reconstruction.Sensitivities surrounding the restoration and reconstruction work were heightened by the fact that although the entire Tower of David complex, also known as David’s Citadel, has yielded archaeological findings dating back to the First Temple period, and though it is a landmark widely highlighted as an Israeli national symbol and widely but erroneously believed to be directly connected to King David, the iconic tower is actually the minaret of a mosque that was added to the complex during the Ottoman era some 400 years ago. The construction was part of an expansion project at the citadel initiated by the Ottoman sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, who also restored the Old City walls. (The mosque was used until 1917, when Britain’s General Allenby marched into the Old City and proclaimed, at the citadel, the capture of Jerusalem.)-Zionist pioneers adopted the citadel, with its soaring tower, as a secular symbol of “power and hope” in contrast to the religious centrality of the Western Wall, noted Eilat Lieber, the director of the Tower of David Museum. Its image quickly became a mainstay on everything from postcards to menorahs, foods and wines.Lieber told Channel 12 in a report on the renovation work that all of Israel’s various security apparatuses had weighed in on the project, with various requests that it be postponed “until after Ramadan, after Jerusalem Day, after Nakba Day,” for fear that it could prompt an escalation of friction in the incendiary Old City and East Jerusalem.“In the end, we said, ‘If we don’t fix the tower, and something happens on our watch, it’ll be a lot worse… Let’s just get it done,'” she said.Eilat Lieber, director of the Tower of David Museum (Channel 12 news screenshot; used in accordance with Clause 27a of the Copyright Law)-Concern for the stability of the tower was highlighted by a report from the Italian professor responsible for the well-being of the Tower of Pisa, said Lieber. An engineering expert from the University of Padua, he warned that the tower — whose last major renovation was conducted in the mandatory era, when the very tip was replaced with concrete — faced potential collapse.IAA Jerusalem renovation expert Yossi Vaknin holds a stone as he stands at the top section of the Tower of David (Channel 12 news screenshot; used in accordance with Clause 27a of the Copyright Law)-The Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) conservation and renovation expert who oversaw the project, Yossi Vaknin, explained that iron braces holding together stones in the tower had gradually expanded when exposed to the elements as the stones cracked and wore away, further destabilizing the structure, especially near the top.“It’s falling apart in our hands,” Vaknin said to camera in a sequence filmed at the top of the tower last year, showing the swollen strips of iron, the cracks and broken stones.Swollen iron in the stonework of the Tower of David“You’re taking apart an icon of Jerusalem?” Channel 12’s reporter asked Vaknin. “In order that it will survive,” Vaknin responded. The top section of the tower was therefore removed, and a new top section was constructed at a stone factory in Shfaram, in northern Israel, using new stones augmented with stone salvaged from the removed section. The reconstructed section was then given “a more authentic, more ancient appearance,” so as to be similar to the original, Vaknin said.Lieber said that seeing the tower without its top during the brief period while it was being replaced was disquieting for her, even though she knew exactly what was being planned.“I have to say it was a shocking sight — for me too. Coming here every morning to work… suddenly the tower has no head. I knew it was going to happen, but the sight was stressful.”A Muslim employee on the project said Arabic social media at the time featured conspiracy theories falsely asserting that “the Israel Antiquities Authority, the Jewish rulers, the enemy leadership is taking our story apart — the Muslim story,” but the worker stressed that “I’m proud of what I’m doing” because the work was necessary. The new top of the tower was installed in December, the report said, with a basalt-based material used to help bind the stones together. The TV report showed the stages of the renovation process, culminating with the replacement of the decorative metal finial on the tower’s rebuilt top.“I’ve had a lot of sleepless nights on this project,” Vaknin said, but in the end the work on the tower was completed without any security frictions.Vaknin said that with some work still ongoing at the citadel, the earthquake in Turkey and Syria in early February “made me truly feel that the ground beneath my feet was shifting.”Scaffolding around the tower was finally removed last week.At the site this weekend, crowded with visitors, areas around the tower were still closed off for renovation work. But staff said the tower may be reopened to the public in the near future.

US defense chief urges Gallant to de-escalate tensions in West Bank-Lloyd Austin calls Israeli counterpart days after an IDF raid on Nablus killed 11, including several civilians-By Emanuel Fabian and ToI Staff-FEB 25,23-Today, 7:53 amUpdated at 6:55 pm

US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin spoke late Friday with Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, urging him to de-escalate tensions in the West Bank with the Palestinians after a deadly raid this week.A statement from the Pentagon said Austin “encouraged the de-escalation of tensions in the West Bank, following a military raid this week that resulted in civilian casualties.”Eleven Palestinians were killed and dozens injured in exchanges of fire during a military raid in the West Bank city of Nablus on Wednesday targeting members of the Lion’s Den terror group, which is based in the city.Palestinian terror groups said at least seven of those killed were their operatives. It was not immediately clear whether the remaining four were involved in the clashes or not.The Pentagon added that “Secretary Austin underscored his steadfast commitment to Israel’s security, and to Israel’s right to defend its citizens from terrorism.”“The two leaders also discussed regional security issues,” the statement said.Defense Minister Yoav Gallant’s office issued a readout from the call on Saturday evening.Gallant’s office said the defense minister briefed Austin on the raid in Nablus, saying the military “foiled a terror cell responsible for shooting attacks in Israel and planning future attacks.”The pair also “discussed the joint efforts to calm the area ahead of the holidays,” his office said, adding that Gallant “emphasized the necessity of continuing the uncompromising fight against terror groups” in the West Bank.According to the Defense Ministry, Gallant also urged Austin to “increase operations to prevent a nuclear Iran.”Gallant said Israel was “very disturbed by the continued enrichment of uranium… and emphasized the need and commitment to prevent Iran from having a nuclear capability,” according to the readout.Austin is expected to visit Israel next month, according to the Defense Ministry. The call came after the Biden administration expressed its “deep concern” Wednesday over the number of Palestinians injured and killed in the raid.US State Department spokesman Ned Price said the administration “is extremely concerned by the levels of violence in Israel and the West Bank” and noted that both “militants and civilian bystanders” were among the dead and injured.Price noted that the Biden administration had “productive conversations” with Israeli and Palestinian leaders in recent days during which each agreed to take steps to de-escalate tensions.“We are deeply concerned that the impact of today’s raid could set back efforts aimed at restoring calm for both Israelis and Palestinians,” he said. The raid came amid a monthlong rise in West Bank violence. In recent months, Palestinian gunmen — mostly members of Lion’s Den — have repeatedly targeted military posts, troops operating along the West Bank security barrier, Israeli settlements and civilians on the roads.Tensions between Israel and the Palestinians have been high for the past year, with the IDF conducting near-nightly raids in the West Bank amid a series of deadly Palestinian terror attacks that killed 32 people in 2022, and another 11 since the beginning of the year. The IDF’s year-long operation has netted more than 2,500 arrests in near-nightly raids. In 2022, 171 Palestinians were killed, and another 60 have been killed since the beginning of the year, most of them while carrying out attacks or during clashes with security forces, but some were uninvolved civilians and others were killed under circumstances that are being investigated.Palestinian gunmen opened fire from a passing vehicle at a military post near the northern West Bank city of Nablus on Friday night, the Israel Defense Forces said.According to the IDF, several bullets hit the post near the West Bank town of Jit, west of Nablus. The gunmen managed to flee the area. The IDF said troops scanning the area found several shell casings. No soldiers were hurt in the attack.Lion’s Den claimed responsibility for the shooting, saying it was in response to the  IDF raid.

Poland delivers first German Leopard tanks to Ukraine-Warsaw, one of its beleaguered eastern neighbor’s staunchest allies, makes announcement on anniversary of Russian invasion-By AFP-24 February 2023, 2:14 pm

WARSAW, Poland — Poland has delivered the first Leopard 2 battle tanks to Ukraine, the Polish defense minister said on Friday, on the anniversary of Russia’s invasion.“Today, Polish Leopards are already in Ukraine,” Mariusz Blaszczak said during a National Security Council meeting, without elaborating on how many German-made tanks were delivered to Kyiv.Poland was the first country to offer to send Leopards to Ukraine and was fiercely critical of Berlin’s initial reluctance to approve the transfer of the powerful battle vehicles to Kyiv. Also on Friday, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki was visiting Kyiv, where he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.“On the anniversary of Russia’s vicious attack on Ukraine, I am in
Poland has been one of Ukraine’s staunchest supporters since Russia launched its full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022, urging its NATO and EU allies to ramp up military aid to the war-torn country.Morawiecki also laid a wreath at the Fallen Defenders memorial in Kyiv alongside Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Shmyhal.Poland has stepped up its own arms purchases, raising its military budget this year to more than four percent of GDP. The country is also host to more than a million Ukrainian refugees.Earlier this week, Warsaw hosted US President Joe Biden who, following a surprise visit to Kyiv, met the leaders of nine countries on NATO’s eastern flank in Poland.

Protest against delivery of weapons to Ukraine in Berlin.

BERLIN, Feb 25 (Reuters) - A demonstration against supplying Ukraine with weapons for war with Russia attracted 10,000 people on Saturday, drawing criticism from top German government officials and a large police presence to maintain order.Organised by a prominent left-wing German politician, the protest comes a day after the one-year anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which drew promises of more weapons from western allies, fresh sanctions against Russia and shows of support for Kyiv across the globe."We call on the German chancellor to stop the escalation of arms deliveries. Now!...Because every day lost costs up to 1,000 more lives - and brings us closer to a 3rd world war," the protest's organizers said on their website. The "Uprising for Peace" was organised in part by Sahra Wagenknecht, a member of Germany's left-wing Die Linke party.Germany, along with the United States, has been one of the biggest suppliers of weapons for Ukraine."Negotiate, not escalate" one sign held by a demonstrator said, while a banner in the crowd read "Not our war".A police spokesperson said 10,000 people gathered around Germany's symbolic Brandenburg Gate in central Berlin.Police mobilised 1,400 officials to keep the peace and to enforce bans on military uniforms, Russian and Soviet flags, Russian military songs and right-wing symbols. The police spokesperson said there was no sign of right-wing groups attending and that the protest, which German Finance Minister Christian Lindner said must be "clearly opposed", was peaceful."Whoever does not stand by Ukraine is on the wrong side of history," Lindner said on Twitter.

Iran unveils new ‘Paveh’ cruise missile that can reach Israel-Top general says Tehran still wants to kill former US president Trump, Secretary Pompeo to avenge the assassination of Qassem Soleimani-By ToI Staff and Agencies-FEB 25,23-Today, 10:34 am

A senior Iranian general unveiled a new cruise missile with a range of 1,650 km (1,025 miles) that could potentially reach Israel in an interview with state television on Friday, in which he also reiterated Tehran’s desire to kill former US president Donald Trump.“Our cruise missile with a range of 1,650 km has been added to the missile arsenal of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” said Amirali Hajizadeh, the head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps aerospace force according to the Reuters news agency. The television broadcast what it said was the first footage showing the new Paveh cruise missile, showing the missile launch, then flying low over terrain before hitting a target.Beyond the range, Hajizadeh gave no further details of the missile. The Guard in the past has said it has cruise missiles with ranges of 1,000 kilometers (620 miles). It also has missiles that range up to 2,000 kilometers (1,250 miles), more than enough to reach archenemy Israel and US military bases in the region.Iran, which has developed a long list of homegrown weaponry, including drones, naval vessels, aircraft and electronic systems, has sparked mounting concern around the world with its supply of suicide drones to Russia for use in Ukraine and fears it could send other weapons systems to Moscow. Iran's state TV this evening aired what it said was the first footage of the IRGC's new cruise missile, Paveh. It has a range of 1,650 km. pic.twitter.com/iQcNRREAOu — Kian Sharifi (@KianSharifi) February 24, 2023-Israel has long warned against Tehran’s missile program saying it poses a threat to Israel, the region and Europe, not just for its conventional capabilities, but also because they could eventually be used to launch nuclear weapons should Iran acquire them.In 2018, then-US president Donald Trump pulled the United States out of the Iran nuclear deal, claiming it was too weak and didn’t address Iran’s missile development. He also re-imposed crushing sanctions on Iran. Tehran has since started enriching uranium up to 60% purity — a short technical step from the 90% needed to make an atomic bomb.Speaking to State TV on Friday, Hajizadeh also reiterated Iran’s desire to kill Trump and former secretary of state Mike Pompeo for their role in the January 3, 2020, killing of Iran’s Quds Force commander Qassem Soleimani in an American drone strike in Baghdad.“God willing, we are looking to kill Trump. Pompeo … and military commanders who issued the order (to kill Soleimani) should be killed,” Hajizadeh said in the television interview. The report on the new cruise missile came hours after Iran said it will likely send air defense systems to Syria, a move apparently meant to protect against Israeli airstrikes.“Syria needs to rebuild its air defense network and requires precision bombs for its fighter planes,” the Iranian state broadcaster said, according to Reuters.“It is very likely that we will witness the supply by Iran of radars and defense missiles, such as the 15 Khordad system, to reinforce Syria’s air defenses,” it added. The state TV report follows an airstrike in Damascus last weekend that was attributed to Israel, which the news agency on Wednesday said targeted a meeting of Syrian and Iranian officials involved with the manufacture of drones, as well as members of the Lebanese terror group Hezbollah.Syria has said five people were killed and 15 wounded in the attack on Saturday night. The Israeli military has not commented on the strike, per its policy of not generally commenting on air raids in Syria, though it has acknowledged conducting hundreds of sorties against Iran-backed groups attempting to gain a foothold in the country over the last decade. Israeli officials have previously said the IDF does not target civilians and seeks to avoid damage to residential areas as much as possible.Iran’s foreign ministry condemned the strike on Sunday, but did not mention any Iranian casualties. It was also denounced by Russia, which like Iran is a key backer of the Syrian regime in the over decade-long civil war, as a “flagrant violation” of international law.Israel’s need to coordinate with Russia — which largely controls Syrian airspace — to carry out strikes has been cited as a chief reason for Jerusalem’s reluctance to supply Kyiv with weaponry amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Israel has found itself at odds with Russia as it increasingly supported Ukraine while seeking to maintain freedom of movement in Syria’s skies. Also Friday, the White House said Russia is considering sending fighter jets to Iran as part of an expanding military cooperation that has seen Tehran ship growing quantities of weaponry to Moscow for use in the invasion of Ukraine.“We believe that Russia might provide Iran unprecedented defense cooperation, including on missiles, electronics and air defense. We believe that Russia might provide Iran with fighter jets,” National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters.Kirby said Iran, which is deeply isolated by Western sanctions aimed at halting its disputed nuclear program, was seeking to bolster its military with Russian help in exchange for sending armaments used in the year-long onslaught against Ukraine.“Iran is also seeking to purchase additional military equipment from Russia, including attack helicopters, radars and combat training aircraft. In total, Iran is seeking billions of dollars’ worth of military equipment,” Kirby said.“We were concerned it was going to go both ways, and those concerns are certainly being realized,” he said.According to Kirby, Iran has already sent hundreds of drones, as well as artillery and tank ammunition, to Russia, saying that “Iran’s support for Russia’s war has expanded.”

Zelensky: I don’t want Israel to mediate. I want it to pick a side, Ukraine’s side-At press conference marking year since invasion, Ukrainian leader says he recognizes Israel’s ‘complex’ situation vis-a-vis Russia, cites improvement in Kyiv’s ties with Jerusalem-By ToI Staff-24 February 2023, 9:55 pm

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Friday that he would like Israel to “choose a side — the Ukrainian side,” amid Russia’s ongoing invasion of his country, rather than try to mediate.Speaking during a press conference on the one-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion, Zelensky said he recognized Israel’s “complex” situation and noted an “improvement” in Kyiv’s ties with Jerusalem. His remarks also underscored Ukraine’s continued frustration with Israel over the latter’s refusal to supply weapons while also refusing to forcefully condemn Russia. As the war has progressed, Israel has increasingly insisted that it is in fact on Ukraine’s side, providing over $22.5 million in humanitarian aid and setting up a field hospital to treat wounded Ukrainians in the early days of the war. On Thursday, it voted alongside 140 other countries for a UN General Assembly resolution drafted by Kyiv calling for Russia to withdraw its forces from Ukraine.Still, Israel’s refusal to send weapons — a position it has justified by arguing that it cannot risk upending its ties with Russia whose approval it needs in order to operate in the Moscow-controlled skies over Syria to prevent Iran’s military entrenchment on its northern border — has contributed to the perception that the Jewish state has staked out a neutral position on the war.Earlier this week, a pair of Israeli lawmakers said it was time for Jerusalem to stop “sitting on the fence” and provide “meaningful” support to Ukraine, including at the military level, after they met with Zelensky in Kyiv.At Friday’s press conference, Zelensky was asked by an Israeli reporter how Israel is assisting Ukraine in curbing Iranian assistance to Russia and whether alleged Israeli strikes on Iranian weapons transfers have helped Ukraine.Zelensky said that while he could answer those questions, he declined to do so in order not to “jeopardize the improvement of Ukraine-Israel relations that has begun.”Prior to that remark, he lamented that “for a long time during this war, I’ve really been eager for Israeli support, not just from the public — because there’s a lot of support there — but also from its political leadership.”“Historically, Ukraine has had excellent relations with Israel,” he noted, explaining that he has held a wide variety of conversations with Israeli officials regarding Jerusalem’s stance.“It has been difficult to change their position because Israel has a complex situation regarding its relations with Russia, Iran, Syria, etc.,” he continued.“But I very much would like them not to be a mediator in this war, but to choose a side — the Ukrainian side,” Zelensky said.In the first months of the war, Israel sought to use its unique position enabled by its close working ties with both Russia and Ukraine to serve as a mediator between the parties. Then-prime minister Naftali Bennett flew to Moscow and held a series of calls with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Zelensky over a span of several weeks. However, the effort failed to bear fruit and Bennett shelved the initiative altogether as his own political position at home worsened. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged before entering office to review Israel’s position and also speculated that he could well be called on to mediate between the sides, as Bennett tried to do.But Zelensky made clear on Friday that this was not what Ukraine wants.“I cannot imagine Israel supporting war,” he said, seemingly equating anything less than full-throttled support for Ukraine as backing continued bloodshed.“Israel is a country that for dozens of years had war, so I couldn’t even fathom [it supporting war here],” Zelensky added.

Iran says it’s likely to send Syria air defenses, after latest alleged Israeli strike-State TV says Tehran expected to ship ‘radars and defense missiles’ to its ally in Damascus; White House warns Russia may supply fighter jets to Iran as their security ties grow-By ToI Staff and AFP-24 February 2023, 8:06 pm

Iran will likely send air defense systems to Syria, Iranian state television reported Friday, a move apparently meant to protect against Israeli airstrikes.“Syria needs to rebuild its air defense network and requires precision bombs for its fighter planes,” the Iranian state broadcaster said, according to Reuters.“It is very likely that we will witness the supply by Iran of radars and defense missiles, such as the 15 Khordad system, to reinforce Syria’s air defenses,” it added. Israeli officials have previously said the IDF does not target civilians and seeks to avoid damage to residential areas as much as possible.“The strike hit the center where they were meeting as well as an apartment in a residential building. One Syrian engineer and one Iranian official — not high-ranking — were killed,” an unnamed source close to the Syrian government told Reuters.Iran’s foreign ministry condemned the strike on Sunday, but did not mention any Iranian casualties.

THERES AT LEAST 50,000 KILLED IN THE TURKEY-SYRIA 3 BIG QUAKES.

Reuters-Turkey widens probe into building collapses as quake toll exceeds 50,000-Ece Toksabay and Daren Butler-Sat, February 25, 2023 at 11:03 a.m.By Ece Toksabay and Daren Butler

ANTAKYA/ISTANBUL, Turkey, Feb 25 (Reuters) - Turkey has arrested 184 people suspected of responsibility for the collapse of buildings in this month's earthquakes and investigations are widening, a minister said on Saturday, as anger simmers over what many see as corrupt building practices.Overnight, the death toll from the earthquakes, the most powerful of which struck at the dead of night on Feb. 6, rose to 44,128 in Turkey. That took the overall number of deaths in Turkey and neighbouring Syria to more than 50,000.More than 160,000 buildings containing 520,000 apartments collapsed or were severely damaged in Turkey by the disaster, the worst in the country's modern history.Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag said that more than 600 people had been investigated in connection with collapsed buildings, speaking during a news conference in the southeastern city of Diyarbakir, which was among 10 provinces hit by the disaster. Those formally arrested and remanded in custody include 79 construction contractors, 74 people who bear legal responsibility for buildings, 13 property owners and 18 people who had made alterations to buildings, he said. Many Turks have expressed outrage at what they see as corrupt building practices and flawed urban developments.President Tayyip Erdogan, who faces the biggest political challenge of his two-decade rule in elections scheduled to be held by June, has promised accountability. In the province of Gaziantep, the mayor of the Nurdagi district - who is from Erdogan's ruling AK Party - was among those arrested as part of the investigations into collapsed buildings, state broadcaster TRT Haber and other media reported.'BREAKING MY HEART'-Nearly three weeks since the disaster, there is no final death toll in Turkey and officials have not said how many bodies may still be trapped under the rubble.A firefighter helping to clear the rubble in the hard-hit city of Antakya said body parts were being found on a daily basis."It's very difficult. You cannot tell a man to continue working if he's lifting out a person's arm," said the firefighter, who declined to be identified.Nearly two million people left homeless by the disaster are being housed in tents, container homes and other facilities in the region and in other parts of the country, Turkey's disaster management authority said.More than 335,000 tents have been erected in the quake zone and container home settlements are being established at 130 locations, while nearly 530,000 people have been evacuated from affected areas, it added. But near Antakya, Omran Alswed, a Syrian, and his family are still living in makeshift shelters."Our houses are heavily damaged so we have taken shelter here, in a garden in our neighbourhood," said Alswed."The biggest issue is tents. It has been 19 days and we are yet to receive a single tent. We also applied to move into a tent camp but they said the ones nearby are full," he said.Turkey's only remaining ethnic Armenian village, Vakifli, was badly hit by the quake, with 30 of its 40 stone houses heavily damaged."Vakifli is all we have, the only Armenian village in Turkey. It is our home. Seeing it like this is breaking my heart," said Masis, a 67-year-old retired jeweller, who moved back to his hometown after spending 17 years in Istanbul.Turkey and Armenia are still at odds over the 1.5 million people Armenia says were killed in 1915 by the Ottoman Empire, the predecessor to modern Turkey. Armenia says this constitutes genocide.Turkey accepts that many Armenians living in the Ottoman Empire were killed in clashes with Ottoman forces during World War One, but contests the figures and denies it was systematic. ISAIAH 30:26-27
26 Moreover the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold,(7X OR 7-DEGREES HOTTER) as the light of seven days, in the day that the LORD bindeth up the breach of his people,(ISRAEL) and healeth the stroke of their wound.
27 Behold, the name of the LORD cometh from far, burning with his anger, and the burden thereof is heavy: his lips are full of indignation, and his tongue as a devouring fire:

MATTHEW 24:21-22,221 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.
22 And except those days should be shortened,(DAY LIGHT HOURS SHORTENED) there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect’s sake (ISRAELS SAKE) those days shall be shortened (Daylight hours shortened)(THE ASTEROID HITS EARTH HERE)
29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:

REVELATION 16:7-9
7 And I heard another out of the altar say, Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are thy judgments.
8 And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire.
9 And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory.

POISONED WATERS

HOSEA 4:1-3
1 Hear the word of the LORD, ye children of Israel: for the LORD hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land,(EARTH) because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land.
2  By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood.

EZEKIEL 32:6-9
6  I will also water with thy blood the land wherein thou swimmest, even to the mountains; and the rivers shall be full of thee.
7  And when I shall put thee out, I will cover the heaven, and make the stars thereof dark; I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon shall not give her light.
8  All the bright lights of heaven will I make dark over thee, and set darkness upon thy land, saith the Lord GOD.
9  I will also vex the hearts of many people, when I shall bring thy destruction among the nations, into the countries which thou hast not known.

REVELATION 8:8-11
8 And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood;
9 And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed.
10 And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters;
11 And the name of the star is called Wormwood:(bitter,Poisoned) and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter.(poisoned)

REVELATION 16:3-7
3 And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea; and it became as the blood of a dead man: and every living soul died in the sea.(enviromentalists won't like this result)
4 And the third angel poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains of waters; and they became blood.
5 And I heard the angel of the waters say, Thou art righteous, O Lord, which art, and wast, and shalt be, because thou hast judged thus.
6 For they(False World Church and Dictator) have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and thou hast given them blood to drink; for they are worthy.

Ohio train derailment: Chemicals that ‘may be of health concern’ found in East Palestine-By Kathryn Mannie Global News-February 25, 2023 3:21 pm

UPDATE: An analysis of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) data by Texas A&M University has found elevated levels of nine chemicals that “may be of health concern” to residents of East Palestine, Ohio. The small town of 5,000 played host to a nightmarish scenario early this month when a train carrying hazardous materials crashed, leaking toxins into the soil, water and air.The results of the Texas A&M analysis seem to contradict assurances from state and federal agencies that the crash site is safe, and water and air levels are “normal.” Some locals say they began experiencing headaches, dizziness, vomiting and bloody noses after the crash. The researchers compared EPA measurements after the crash to national air toxics data and found elethe presence of nine chemicals known to have adverse health effects.“If these levels continue, they may be of health concern (especially acrolein),” the researchers wrote.Acrolein is a colourless or yellow substance found in smoke that can cause nose, throat and respiratory irritation, according to Health Canada. Update (2/3) Compared to EPA National Air Toxics data (NATA 2014), some concentrations in East Palestine (OH) for 9 out of ~50 chemicals EPA reported are higher than “normal.” If these levels continue, they may be of health concern (especially acrolein). pic.twitter.com/q4jyxS45Lu— Texas A&M Superfund Research Center (@tamusuperfund) February 24, 2023Levels of the carcinogen benzene and other toxic chemicals involved in plastic production were not elevated, the researchers found. “Good news,” they said.Weihsueh Chiu, a professor of veterinary physiology and pharmacology at Texas A&M told the Washington Post that the highest levels of air pollution were collected in the days after emergency crews performed a controlled burn of the toxic chemicals within the train. However, some samples taken more recently still show higher-than-normal levels.“We can’t say whether these levels are causing the current symptoms,” Chiu said. The EPA should “definitely make sure that these higher levels that are detected would be reduced before they left and declared everything cleaned up.”An official from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources said in a news conference Thursday that it has updated its initial estimate of how many animals died in the area after the 38-car train derailed and caught fire, threatening to explode and flatten the nearby town of East Palestine, Ohio.Eleven cars on the Norfolk Southern train were carrying hazardous materials, including the known carcinogen vinyl chloride, which emergency crews drained into a trench and burned off — sending up a massive black plume of phosgene gas and hydrogen chloride into the air.Shortly after the controlled burn, videos circulated of thousands of dead fish in the waterways around East Palestine, a small town of 5,000. At the time, Mary Mertz, director of Ohio‘s Department of Natural Resources, reported around 3,500 animals died after the derailment. On Thursday, she amended that figure to around 43,700 animals.Mertz said all the dead animals were aquatic species, not believed to be endangered or threatened. She said there is no evidence that any terrestrial animals were killed by the chemical spill, contradicting reports from locals of dead foxes and chickens immediately following the accident.Mertz also said there is no sign that any of the train’s chemicals killed animals in the nearby Ohio River and no additional animal deaths have been reported since the crash first occurred.More from Ohio train wreck pic.twitter.com/TBCjA5xwsY — Andrew John 🇺🇸 (@andrewjohn21) February 13, 2023-Initial federal report into the accident-On Thursday, the National Transportation Safety Board released its preliminary report on the train crash as local residents continue to question how safe it is to return to their homes despite assurances from the Environmental Protection Agency. The report found that the train crash was caused when a hot axle underneath one of the train’s cars carrying plastic pellets sparked a fire, said Jennifer Homendy, chair of the safety board. The Norfolk Southern train passed two wayside defect detectors as the axle got hotter and hotter, yet they did not trigger an audible alarm to notify the crew that temperatures were becoming dangerous. Homendy explained this was because the heat threshold, which is set by the railroad, hadn’t been met yet.The alarm was only triggered after the train drove through a third wayside detector, which registered a “critical” temperature level — 253 degrees Fahrenheit above ambient temperature — but it was already too late. The train’s engineer applied the train’s brakes after hearing the alarm but, “during this deceleration, the wheel bearing failed,” Homendy said. “Car 23 derailed, and the train initiated an emergency brake application and came to a stop.”“This was 100 per cent preventable. … There is no accident. Every single event that we investigate is preventable,” Homendy said during the Thursday news conference. “The NTSB has one goal, and that is safety and ensuring that this never happens again.”The National Transportation Safety Board report noted no wrongdoing on the part of the train engineers. This next phase of the investigation will seek to answer why the train’s axle and bearings failed, and will review the train’s use of wayside defect detectors and the company’s railcar inspection practice.Homendy told CNN that it’s “too early to tell” what could have prevented the disaster, but she noted that the safety board does not have the authority to make regulation changes and can only recommend measures to Norfolk Southern and the U.S. Department of Transportation.Another aspect of the investigation focuses on the emergency response to the train crash, particularly the decision to burn off the toxic chemicals in the train.Days after the train crash, the wreck was still burning. Five of the train’s cars held more than 115,000 gallons (437,500 litres) of vinyl chloride, a flammable chemical known to increase a person’s risk of liver cancer and death. On February 3, a horrifying railroad accident took place. A Norfolk Southern freight train derailed in East Palestine, Ohio. You might've seen images of the flames, but you probably haven't heard that unions were trying to prevent this exact accident. 🧵pic.twitter.com/pnynoFHSnm— More Perfect Union (@MorePerfectUS) February 10, 2023-Crews drained the chemicals into a ditch to be burned off in order to avert a potential explosion, after a dangerous rise in temperature was registered from within one of the cars. Locals were evacuated from the area and the controlled burn took place on Feb. 6, three days after the derailment. Two days later, EPA and state officials were already telling residents it was safe to return to their homes, and that air and water readings were coming back normal. But some residents say they have experienced headaches, dizziness, vomiting and bloody noses after the crash. Some residents are pointing fingers at Norfolk Southern’s business practices as the underlying cause of the crash. An investigation into Norfolk Southern by independent news outlet The Lever found that the company has laid off thousands of rail workers, despite safety concerns about overworked and understaffed crews. Last year, the company reported a record-setting profit of US$4.8 billion.Norfolk Southern also fought off a shareholder initiative that would have required executives to “assess, review, and mitigate risks of hazardous material transportation,” SEC filings show. The Lever found that the railroad company helped lobby the Trump administration to gut legislation that would have improved braking systems across the nation’s rails. The regulators specifically killed a provision for trains carrying hazardous flammable materials to be equipped with an electronic braking system. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, has ordered Norfolk Southern to cover the full cost of the clean-up in the aftermath of the train crash.“EPA has special authority for situations just like this where we can compel companies who inflict trauma and cause environmental and health damage to communities, like Norfolk Southern has done, to completely clean up the mess that they’ve caused and pay for it,” said EPA administrator Michael Regan. If the company doesn’t follow the order, the EPA will step in to clean up the water, soil and debris, as well as people’s homes and businesses, while fining Norfolk Southern up to US$70,000 a day.Norfolk Southern CEO Alan Shaw told the people of East Palestine that he is “terribly sorry that this has happened to this community,” and promised to “make it right.”“We’re going to get the cleanup right, we’re going to reimburse the citizens, we’re going to invest in the long-term health of this community,” Shaw said. “I’m going to see this through, and we’re going to be here. And we’re going to work with these community leaders to help you thrive.”The company plans to rip up the tracks where the train derailed and remove the potentially contaminated soil underneath. Norfolk Southern also plans to use the results of the National Transportation Safety Board’s investigation to update its safety measures.People living near the Ohio train derailment will have to watch their health for years

It’s the beginning of a years-long effort to clean up and track the effects of chemicals in East Palestine, Ohio.By Umair Irfan Feb 25, 2023, 7:00am EST

Umair Irfan is a correspondent at Vox writing about climate change, Covid-19, and energy policy. Irfan is also a regular contributor to the radio program Science Friday. Prior to Vox, he was a reporter for ClimateWire at E&E News. Many residents of East Palestine, Ohio, have warily returned to their homes after a Norfolk Southern train derailed and spilled more than 100,000 gallons of dangerous chemicals into the air and water earlier this month. The towering smoke cloud from the burning vinyl chloride has drifted away, and the track has been cleared. Trains are now running again through the town. But the 4,700 residents of East Palestine say they still smell chemical residue in the air, see an oily sheen in the water, and are suffering from headaches and nausea. Concern is mounting about the long-term effects of the disaster. It’s also become a political football. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg visited East Palestine this week and apologized for not speaking about the derailment sooner. Former President Donald Trump also visited the town and criticized President Joe Biden for going to Ukraine this week instead of Ohio. (Trump himself has faced criticism for rolling back train safety rules.)Other government officials are trying to assure residents that much of the risk has faded. This week, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine and Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Michael Regan both visited East Palestine and drank tap water in a resident’s home.Pete Buttigieg speaks during a news conference near the site of the Norfolk Southern train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio.“You don’t know who to trust. That’s a big part of it — the uncertainty. You don’t know if you’re going to have to move,” one resident, Carolyn Brown, told ABC News. “We need to feel that we’re safe.”But “safe” may be more than anyone can promise.“‘Safe’ is one of those four-letter words in a [disaster] response you just don’t use,” said Stan Meiburg, executive director of the Center for Energy, Environment, and Sustainability at Wake Forest University and a former career EPA official who worked on toxic waste cleanup. “What people consider ‘safe’ is highly variable ... plus, EPA just can’t answer that question.”Instead, agencies like the EPA try to measure what they can and extrapolate from past research. They compare the concentrations of pollutants they measure to limits established by health departments, which don’t always reflect the dangers an individual will face. Children, for example, breathe in more air proportionate to their body size and thus are more vulnerable to airborne toxic chemicals. And scientists aren’t clear how the health effects of the specific toxic chemical brew that shrouded East Palestine will play out over time.Authorities nevertheless told residents they could return home. In doing so, the people of East Palestine may face low levels of exposure to some of the dangerous chemicals from the derailment, with uncertain health effects. So now begins a years-long effort to track the effects of the leaked chemicals, to mitigate their harms, to analyze why the train derailed, and to prevent the next spill. While this is uncharted territory for health and environment agencies, experts say there are some best practices to better understand the disaster and to protect residents. But they require continued attention and resources long after media coverage fades and political wrangling stops. The next steps in the response to the East Palestine chemical spill-Of the 38 cars that derailed on February 3, 11 were known to hold hazardous chemicals, according to the National Transportation Safety Board. These included chemicals like vinyl chloride, a flammable carcinogenic gas, and butyl acrylate, a toxic flammable liquid. Some leaked, some were vented, and some burned, further complicating the picture.“Each of the chemicals that leaked are respiratory irritants, and some of their breakdown products are also irritants,” said Marilyn Howarth, an environmental toxicologist at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, in an email. “This is part of what is unclear: How much of each was experienced by each person and for how long?”Occupational health researchers have found that workers who are regularly exposed to chemicals like vinyl chloride have higher rates of liver cancer. It’s a signal that can take 20 years or more to emerge, Howarth said. However, these workers were exposed to higher doses and in enclosed spaces, unlike the residents of East Palestine. It’s not clear how exposures from the train derailment will play out, but the long latency of vinyl chloride’s worst effects means that it’s critical to track its concentrations in the community for years to come.A fish lays dead following a train derailment prompting health concerns on February 20, 2023 in East Palestine, Ohio.More than 40,000 fish died after chemicals spilled into waterways during a train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, earlier this month. Michael Swensen/Getty Images-Meanwhile, residues from burning vinyl chloride, like dioxin, and other leaked chemicals, like butyl acrylate, can haunt water supplies for years and spread through watersheds and underground aquifers that provide drinking water.“The aquifer may remain contaminated for years, even a decade, despite best clean-up efforts in the short and long term,” Abinash Agrawal, a professor of earth and environmental sciences at Wright State University, said in an email. “This may not be a threat to breathable air quality, but definitely toxic in drinking water as it can migrate and move/travel in a groundwater plume of contamination to the pumping wells nearby up to several thousand feet.”So state and federal environmental agencies will also need to check water and soil samples regularly for contamination for years.Parts of East Palestine and the surrounding region will also have to be decontaminated, cleaned up, and remediated. The water used to extinguish the train fire is now toxic, and 2 million gallons of it are being sent to Texas, where it will be injected underground for disposal. The contaminated soil around the train tracks is being excavated and sent to a toxic waste disposal site in Michigan. The community may also have to look for a new drinking water source, Agrawal said. The National Transportation Safety Board is conducting an investigation of the root causes of the train wreck. Federal regulators will have to consider whether to impose new safety regulations on the rail industry. The residents of East Palestine will also have to keep tabs on their health. Philip Landrigan, director of the public health program at Boston College, studied 20,000 first responders and rescue workers in New York City after the 9/11 attacks in 2001. He said one of the key lessons learned from that study was that in addition to figuring out exactly what was in the dust that people were breathing in, it was also important to conduct regular health assessments to catch problems that emerged over time.“A program has to be put in place to get baseline health evaluations of people in the town, even people that appear to be okay, and follow them up periodically over the next decade or more,” Landrigan said.Norfolk Southern will have to pay-All these measures, however, will cost a lot of money. “You can’t expect the people who were the victims of this catastrophe to pay for that themselves,” Landrigan said.To that end, the EPA has ordered Norfolk Southern to pay for the cleanup of the train derailment and the response. If they fall short, the rail operator could face a fine of $70,000 per day according to EPA administrator Regan. “Norfolk Southern will pay for the mess that they created and the trauma that they inflicted on this community,” he said during a press conference this week. But that doesn’t account for the ongoing health needs of East Palestine, and the total medical bill could be massive. A number of residents are now looking to sue the railroad company. Norfolk Southern has also committed $5.6 million in financial assistance and support to the town. One of the biggest challenges, however, will be rebuilding trust between the community and the government. A half-dozen federal offices along with local authorities are playing roles in the disaster response, which is making it difficult for some residents to figure out who should be held accountable. And agencies like the EPA are struggling to communicate how to interpret their measurements of chemical exposures and how residents should respond to their findings. Things like quantifying the toxic chemicals in the air, soil, and water and determining that they’re below reference levels don’t address the anxiety that the people of East Palestine may feel.“One thing that I hope we will see the agency doing is recognizing that assurances to people are not just giving them numbers but rather helping them have access to resources that will help them discuss their feeling about the matter,” said Meiburg.“This has been a traumatizing event for the community,” he added. “To think about this as a ‘one and done’ experience is probably a mistake.”
