Israel is advancing plans for the construction of an underwater electricity cable project to meet growing energy needs in the center and north of the country and to link the country’s electricity network to power grids in Europe and countries in the Gulf region.The national planning and building council on Tuesday decided to commence with the planning and construction of the proposed 150-kilometer (93-mile) subsea electricity cable that will run along Israel’s Mediterranean coast from Ashkelon in the south to Haifa in the north, the Energy Ministry said in a statement. The underwater power cable will transmit electricity mainly generated from renewable solar energy fields in Israel’s south to areas of demand in cities in the center and the north.According to the subsea cable project plan, the possibility of connecting Israel’s electricity network to power grids in Europe via Cyprus and Greece will be advanced, as well as the option of connecting to Gulf countries through Jordan and Egypt, the ministry said.Connecting the underwater cable to regional countries such as Egypt would open the possibility to have a backup for the local grid in case of power shortages and allow for exports of green electricity produced in Israel, the ministry said.The project is part of a broader vision by Energy and Infrastructure Minister Israel Katz to turn Israel into an energy power and an energy bridge connecting East and West while strengthening its international status.“I welcome the first step on the way to establishing an undersea electricity cable along Israel’s coast – a groundbreaking cross-border project that will move the Israeli electricity grid forward and help Israel become an energy power,” Katz said. “The cable is a significant part of the national plan for energy and infrastructure that I will present in the coming weeks, to improve the reliability of the electricity system, accelerate the deployment of renewable energies, and link Israel’s electricity grid to Europe, Egypt, Jordan, and the Gulf states — a step that will contribute to regional stability.”Recent heatwaves leading to power outages in the country as the country’s electricity grid struggles to meet sweltering demand have made energy security and independence even more pressing. At the beginning of June, heatwave-related power cuts affected some 260,000 Israelis as temperatures rose above 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit), while high winds whipped up hundreds of fires across the country, closing roads and forcing some evacuations.Earlier in June, the planning and building council approved a proposal to allocate 40,000 more dunams (10,000 acres) of land in open areas for solar power facilities. The decision fell short of the 69,000 dunams the Energy Ministry, which submitted the request, had sought. That’s as Israel has set itself a target to generate 30 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030. Most of that will be solar energy. But by the end of last year, the state was barely scraping 10%, a goal it should have reached by 2020.The plan for the underwater electricity cable comes after Katz in June paid a visit to France where he toured the IFA-2 subsea electrical interconnector running beneath the English Channel between France and the United Kingdom.Separately, state-owned energy group EAPC (Europe Asia Pipeline Co.) announced last month that it has reached an agreement with the Israeli government to build a 254-kilometer (158-mile) fiber optic cable between the Mediterranean and the Red Sea as part of a national project to turn Israel into a communications hub and corridor for data transmission in the Middle East, connecting Europe to the Gulf states and Asia. The fiber optic infrastructure will be built along EAPC’s oil pipeline between the Mediterranean port of Ashkelon and the Red Sea port of Eilat.As part of the project, EAPC will build at its facilities in Ashkelon and Eilat, two landing stations to connect to incoming subsea cables from Europe, Asia and the Middle East. EAPC will also install a connection for communication providers in Jordan, at the Wadi Araba border crossing, known as the Yitzhak Rabin terminal on the Israeli side.

The Israel Defense Forces on Tuesday accused Palestinian gunmen in the West Bank city of Jenin of turning a mosque into a “fortified” hideout, complete with an underground tunnel and a cache of weapons.Israeli forces gained control of the al-Ansari mosque on Monday afternoon, following a shootout with Palestinian gunmen in the area, during the course of a major counterterrorism operation against the Jenin refugee camp.The IDF said it carried out a drone strike against the armed Palestinians outside the mosque and later managed to break inOn the ground floor, troops found two tunnel openings that the army said were connected. Explosives, weapons, and other military equipment were found inside the holes and scattered across the mosque.“All of this excavation work in the mosque has turned it into a fortified site,” said Lt. Col. “Mem,” the commander of the elite Egoz unit, who can only be identified by his rank and initial of his first name in Hebrew.Footage released by the army showed dozens of sandbags and stones piled up across the ground floor of the mosque.Mem said the fortification of the mosque and the tunnel digging likely took the gunmen a long time to carry out.The equipment was seized, the weapons were destroyed, and the tunnel was rendered inoperable, the IDF said.The military’s operation in Jenin was set to continue Tuesday following a mostly uneventful night that saw Palestinian gunmen choosing not to fight Israeli forces, potentially signaling an approaching end to the campaign, now in its second day.Israel launched the major operation early Monday to crack down on what it says is a hotbed of terror in the city. PHILADELPHIA — A gunman wearing a bulletproof vest opened fire on the streets of Philadelphia on Monday night, killing four people and wounding two boys in the latest outbreak of gun violence in the United States, police said. The victims were apparently random, with no connection immediately known between them and the shooter.The shootings took place over several city blocks in the southwestern neighborhood of Kingsessing. Responding officers chased the suspect as he continued to fire, and he was arrested in an alley after surrendering, Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said at a news conference.“At this point all we know is that this person decided to leave their home and target individuals,” Outlaw said.He had a bulletproof vest, an “AR-type rifle,” multiple magazines, a handgun and a police scanner, she said.Officers were flagged down at about 8:30 p.m., and multiple calls of shots fired came in from Kingsessing. Police found some gunshot victims, and as they were attending to them, they heard more gunfire, Outlaw said.The suspected shooter was identified as a 40-year-old man. A second person was also taken into custody who may have returned fire at the suspect, but police did not know whether there was a connection between the two people, Outlaw said.The chief described the scene as covering an area of two by four blocks and said dozens of shell casings were found.“You can see there are several scenes out here,” Outlaw said. “We’re canvassing the area to get as much as we can, to identify witnesses, to identify where cameras are located and to do everything to figure out the why,” Outlaw said.Three of the dead ranged in age from 20 to 59, while the fourth, who had not yet been identified, was estimated to be between 16 and 21. Futurist and celebrity speaker Thomas Frey is hailing a new solution for the epidemic of mass shootings in the United States that sounds straight from an episode of Black Mirror: Artificial intelligence-enabled drones.The former IBM engineer said in a recent blog post that flying machines could be upgraded into advanced crisis management tools.Biometric capabilities such as ocular scanning or fingerprint identification could enhance the drones’ ability to identify individuals even in scenarios where facial recognition is insufficient. AI can be employed to analyze body language and facial expressions to make judgments about the likely intentions of individuals, writes Frey, who is the founder of the DaVinci Institute think tank.The drone would be equipped with other technologies, including sensors allowing real-time tracking of threats, loudspeakers and light signals for communication, and AI systems analyzing body language and facial expressions.The machine could also have an AI bot installed specializing in crisis negotiation with suspects. If negotiation doesn’t work, equipping drones with non-lethal weapons such as tasers, pepper spray, rubber bullets or net guns might do the trick.Finally, if one drone doesn’t work perhaps a swarm of drones will: Installing drone-to-drone communication systems could allow them to respond to complex situations in coordination.Frey’s futuristic predictions on drone surveillance may sound like a dystopian sci-fi thriller but they are also not so far from reality. In February, it became known that the U.S. Air Force awarded a contract to defense supplier RealNetworks two years ago to integrate a facial recognition system into its drones.Other governments are also working on flying killer robots. In 2020, the Turkish Armed Forces added Kargu kamikaze drones with biometric facial recognition made by defense supplier STM to its arsenal.Frey’s plan for drones that hunt down active shooters may, however, be upended by upcoming legislation. The state of Illinois, for instance, has passed a ban on the use of facial recognition on video feeds coming from drones. Exceptions are allowed in cases of terrorist attacks.

Tanzania’s efforts in crime prevention, social protection and financial inclusion through digital identity are commendable but the government has to do more in the area of data protection especially as the country continues its push for mobile-based digital ID initiatives such as biometric SIM card registration.This observation is contained in a recently published report commissioned by the Digital Agenda for Tanzania Initiative (DA4TI).DA4TI is a Tanzanian civil society organization fronting the campaign for digital literacy, digital rights, digital inclusion, safety, peace, entrepreneurship and technopreneurship. Tanzanian digital and privacy rights lawyer Josephina Nshunju played a key role in authoring the report.According to the report, a weak digital identity legal framework has led to mobile network operators (MNOs) failing to respect commitments taken with regard to data privacy and protection.This, the report says, is as a result of the failure of the government to set up a data protection authority as provided for in the 2022 Personal Data Protection Act, failure by MNOs (six licensed ones) to provide clear and transparent privacy policies, a government policy which requires disclosure of data collected from a surveillance system under certain conditions, and inadequate laws on information security, among others.A government directive in 2018 called on all mobile telephone users in Tanzania to re-register their SIM cards with biometrics and the national ID card issued by the National Identification Authority (NIDA), the report recalls, with many registration deadlines set after that. The deadline was June 30 in principle, per a report by Developing Telecoms. An estimated 280,000 merchant SIM cards are still unregistered in Ghana.

The U.S. Transportation Security Administration plans to expand facial recognition for passenger processing to 430 airports around the country within “several years,” a representative of the agency told Fast Company. The expansion is part of a trend towards the use of face biometrics instead of manual facial comparisons by government authorities, in a boon for vendors like Dignari and Idemia.A pilot at 25 airports which is currently underway has so far shown a 97 percent rate of accuracy across all demographics, through the TSA does not intend to release the final results when the two-year pilot is complete.There are actually two concurrent pilots, TSA Press Secretary Robert Langston told the publication, including one testing 1:N (one-to-many) facial recognition at a pair of airports. The program compares photos of travelers to images in a government database, and is limited to Trusted Traveler participants.“Biometric data is overwritten as soon as the next passenger steps up to the queue,” Langston says. “And then, when the technology is turned off at the end of the day, whatever storage system in there dumps completely. There is no saved image.”Previously, however, some passengers’ face biometrics were sent in encrypted form to DHS researchers to help evaluate the effectiveness of the algorithms.Jeramie Scott of the Electronic Privacy Information Center notes that 97 percent accuracy would leave 60,000 people per day to be processed in the usual way. But a new white paper from ATB Ventures emphasizes the vast economic potential in a Canadian marketplace that is ready for the widespread use of digital ID.The white paper, Trust & the Evolution of Digital Identity in Canada, says that eight in ten Canadians now support digital IDs. More specifically, 66 percent believe in the importance of a secure and trusted digital ID to use for online transactions. And four in ten are already using digital wallets on their smartphones.In this enthusiastic climate, says the paper, the Digital ID and Authentication Council of Canada (DIACC) estimates the potential economic value of trusted digital identity to be at least one percent of Canada’s GDP, equivalent to C$15 billion (US$11.3 billion).“The time is right for both public and private sectors to adopt digital credentials and decentralize digital identity technology,” the paper says. “This will allow organizations to mitigate risks, safeguard their customers’ privacy, and foster trust in an increasingly interconnected world. From travel documentation, to financial account creation, to government service management: opportunities for evolution are unlimited.”Safety first, $15 billion second-While the paper is understandably keen to highlight the “$15 billion opportunity currently facing citizens, businesses, and governments,” it does not ignore pressing concerns around digital ID and biometric security. Centralized systems, it argues, come with risks that are only increasing. Its authors cite the historic spike in fraud cases recorded in 2022.“Traditional cloud storage solutions, while convenient and scalable, can pose a risk of data breaches due to the centralized nature,” the paper says. “In contrast, decentralized data storage solutions offer enhanced security by distributing information across multiple storage networks, making it more difficult for cybercriminals to access and compromise sensitive data.”Just as new threats can drive timelines on development, so can global competition. Although the paper points out that Canada ranked 7th in the latest World Economic Forum report on digital competitiveness, it chides Canadian privacy policy for allowing 72 percent of Canadian companies to grant third-party access to data they collect from customers. Speed to market may also become a factor in policy change, with three quarters of Canadians saying they believe it is important for governments to move quickly on implementing digital IDs.DIACC ushers in new board to guide digital ID-The DIACC has a new team dedicated to the mushrooming issues around digital trust, identity, data control and privacy protection. The Balkans is experiencing a surge in cyberattacks against public and private organizations just as the region is embracing biometrics and digital identity raising questions about the protection of biometric data, new research from the Balkan Investigative Journalism Network (BIRN) has shown.The organization mapped 40 incidents that resulted in significant data breaches and compromised large amounts of data between 2020 and 2023, covering countries such as Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Kosovo and Serbia. The attacks include ransomware, phishing, data hacking and other cyber attacks against the public sector, banks and individuals.The cyber intrusions have raised concern about data privacy, including biometric data. The region has been increasingly relying on biometrics and digital identity in online banking, e-government services and border control. Among the 40 listed cases, however, none seem to be connected to biometric data, although in many incidents it is not clear which data was breached or compromised. The data potentially compromised does include unique identification numbers.Among the problems in fighting the onslaught of cybercrime has been poor public awareness, inadequate cybersecurity policies and limited regional collaboration, the report concludes.

Panelists explained legal battles against national ID schemes or aspects of them in Uganda, Mexico, Serbia and Kenya. One of the key themes that emerged from the discussion is the difficulty making sense of consent for participation in systems that are essential to living a normal life.Australia’s government has published a new national ID strategy document setting out plans to increase the use of biometrics to secure online interactions between people and government services. South Korean startup Alchera will help the country’s longest-operating bank introduce access to banking services through facial recognition at a total of 900 ATMs.Shinhan Bank customers will be able to withdraw funds even without identifying themselves with a bank card or passbook thanks to the country’s first biometric facial recognition payment service Shinhan Face Pay. The service is expected to be launched in September.Aside from equipping Shinhan Bank’s ATMs, Alchera will help customers registering through the bank’s smartphone app withdraw foreign currency by using their faces in Shinhan Bank branches and some ATMs at Incheon Airport and Samseong subway station in Seoul starting in July.The artificial intelligence and image recognition company based in Seoul, South Korea first rolled out the Shinhan Face Pay pilot in 2020. A case study reveals that the 3D facial feature mapping solution was built on Alchera’s deep learning facial recognition technology AIIR, which uses a lightweight software development kit (SDK) and can be deployed in an app or kiosk using any operating system.Aside from expanding the bank’s biometrics-based authentication service, Face Pay has been piloted as a frictionless payment solution in Hanyang University’s Seoul campus. Alchera has been working with other financial companies including South Korea’s Toss Bank and Busan Bank (BNK) which signed a deal for the company’s remote ID verification system in May, according to a Google translation of its press release.Government agencies have also been using its technology as part of an access control solution. Alchera’s facial recognition system is part of a larger government project to digitally transform government buildings in Korea overseen by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, the company said in a statement at the beginning of June.

It has been an eventful month for the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), which announced a new milestone in implementing the Philippine Identification System (PhilSys).On Tuesday, the PSA confirmed that as of 16 June 2023, the total number of delivered PhilIDs was 33,422,502, while the number of issued ePhilIDs — printed and downloadable — was 36,848,828.“The PSA shall continue its efforts in expediting the issuance of the PhilID and ePhilID,” commented PSA undersecretary Claire Dennis S. Mapa.“We encourage our kababayans [fellow Filipinos] who have received their PhilID and ePhilID to maximize its use in their transactions.”Meanwhile, a government body called the Anti-Red Tape Authority (ARTA) has sent a circular to all public sector offices and organizations at various levels in the Philippines to urge them to accept the various forms of PhilID, reports Malaysia Business Insight. The guidance was sent in response to reports that some entities have refused to accept the printed or digital form of the ID.People or entities refusing to accept PhilID could be fined 500,000 Philippine pesos (approximately US$9,050), and officials could be barred from holding public office.PSA and PHLPost renew PhilID efforts-The PSA has also recently renewed its partnership with PHLPost to expedite the delivery of PhilIDs to registered Filipinos under PhilSys.The move comes after the appointment of a new postmaster general and chief executive officer, Luis D. They are pushing the fact that getting their social login integration protocol in Auth0 as a “global first,” but have not said a first in what.The executives say that millions people had already verified their Worldcoin’s World ID, which they can now use with “tens of thousands” of apps and services that depend on Auth0 for authentication.World ID is designed to protect users’ privacy in a streamlined manner. Anyone verified through the protocol can tick the Worldcoin box on an app or service on Auth0. A QR code will appear that is scanned with a World ID-compatible wallet to be authenticated.The integration gives app and online service developers a way to verify the identities of their users and protect against bots, according to the announcement. Users get a way to perform Auth0 authentication that avoids sharing personal information unnecessarily.Worldcoin developer Tools for Humanity announced late last month that it has raised $115 million from investors led by Blockchain Capital.The announcement does not hurt Okta’s goal to attain 50 billion users of its ID and access management products.The company says that its customer total went from 4,350 in 2021 to 6,100 in 2022. The European Union’s top court is soon set to decide on whether including fingerprint data on identity cards is against EU regulation. A new non-binding legal opinion by the court’s adviser issued last week confirms that European member states can ask for this type of data for issuing ID cards.The case dates to 2021 when a German citizen from the city of Wiesbaden applied for a new ID card but refused to hand over fingerprint biometrics. The city authorities, however, declined to issue new identification as EU member states have been required by law to include fingerprint data on ID cards since 2021.The case has since climbed all the way to the European Court of Justice which is set to decide whether the obligation to take fingerprint biometrics and store them in ID cards is in accordance with other EU laws, including the bloc’s Charter of Fundamental Rights and its data privacy law, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The case was brought by campaign group Digitalcourage.The European Court of Justice Advocate General Laila Medina said in her opinion that the mandatory collection of fingerprint data in German ID cards is valid. The law mandating fingerprint collection for ID cards was created to allow the free movement of EU citizens within member states with ID cards now used instead of passports across the continent, she writes in the decision. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hinted Tuesday that Israel’s major military operation in the West Bank city of Jenin was coming to a close, while vowing that it would not be the last raid.“At this moment we are completing the mission, and I can say our widescale action in Jenin is not a one-time thing,” Netanyahu said during a visit to the Salem checkpoint, some 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) from Jenin.“We will continue [to operate] as necessary to root out terrorism. We will not allow Jenin to go back to being a hotbed of terror,” he added. Israel launched the major operation early Monday to crack down on what it says is a hotbed of terror in the city. A number of attacks on Israelis in recent years have been carried out by Palestinians from the area, and observers say the Palestinian Authority has little control on the ground.The Israel Defense Forces’ operation has focused on a local wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad terror group known as the Jenin Battalion, as well as other smaller armed groups in the city and refugee camp.The operation continued on Tuesday following a mostly uneventful night that saw Palestinian gunmen choosing not to fight Israeli forces, signaling the approaching end to the campaign.The Palestinian Authority health ministry said a man, named by Palestinian media as Abdel Rahman Saabneh, was fatally shot in the head during clashes with Israeli troops in Jenin on Tuesday afternoon. The Israeli military’s operation in the northern West Bank city of Jenin was set to continue Tuesday following a mostly uneventful night that saw Palestinian gunmen choosing not to fight Israeli forces, potentially signaling an approaching end to the campaign, now in its second day.Israel Defense Forces spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said the military had some ten sites in the city’s restive refugee camp that it aimed to search in the coming hours.He said the IDF had intelligence information that the sites were being used to manufacture explosives and other weapons.Israel launched the major operation early Monday to crack down on what it says is a hotbed of terror in the city. China experienced four heatwaves this June, with high temperature days recorded more often and earlier than usual. This has resulted in drought in multiple places due to high temperature and little rain. China Meteorological Administration reflected on the national weather and climate characteristics in June and forecasted the climate trend and released disaster prevention and mitigation recommendations for July on Tuesday. According to the administration, the climate in June showed prominent warm and dry climate features, with the national average temperature at 21.1 C, higher than average usual temperature by 0.7 C, and came as the second highest in history since 1961, only lower than and 21.3 C in June of 2022. Meanwhile, the national average precipitation in June was 86.7 millimeters, less than the usual average by 15.6 percent, the least in precipitation since 2005. In June, China experienced four regional high temperature processes. The first regional high temperature process for this year happened between May 28 and June 5, 16 days earlier than usual, with its major affected areas covering Shanghai as well as Yunnan, Sichuan, Anhui and Guangdong provinces. Over 70 meteorological stations in Yunnan recorded high temperatures breaking through the historical extremes.The strongest heatwave of this year occurred between June 21 and 30, with the municipalities and provinces including Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Shandong and Henan suffering extreme high temperatures. A total of 22 meteorological stations recorded historic high temperatures. The heatwave resulted in the rapid development of drought in the northern areas. Besides, Yunnan experienced the strongest drought in winter and spring since 1961, which has been relived with obvious more precipitation since June 9. Whereas in June, the meteorological drought has developed rapidly in the southeast of Inner Mongolia, the central and western parts of Northeast China, the north part of North China and so on due to high temperature and little rain. The administration also noted that a total of four rainstorms occurred in China since June with the precipitation in the southern part of Central China, the southern part of East China, the central and western part of South China, and the eastern part of Southwest China experiencing precipitation reaching 50 millimeters to 100 millimeters. The administration also released the forecast of climate trends for July. In terms of precipitation, it is expected that the main raining areas in the next 10 days between July 4 and 13 will be in places including Huanghuai, Jianghan, Jianghuai, Jiangnan North, Sichuan Basin, western and southern parts of Yunnan, with the cumulative precipitation of about 50 millimeters to 90 millimeters and some areas of 100 millimeters to 150 millimeters, or even more than 200 millimeters. It's going to be a sizzling start to the work week for British Columbia, as temperatures and smoke concentrations are expected to rise into Tuesday.A building ridge of high pressure is moving in from the Pacific Ocean, pushing temperatures up to 10°C above average for some inland locations along the South Coast.Temperatures across inland sections of the Lower Mainland will soar into the low 30s, rivalling some of the warmest days of 2023. Overnight lows will remain stubbornly in the mid-to-upper teens. Those particularly vulnerable to the heat should take precautions.With under 20 mm of rainfall recorded in Vancouver, it’s no wonder fire danger remains near extreme levels for this time of year. It’s possible that the South Coast doesn’t pick up any appreciable precipitation over the next couple of weeks.It’s the third most destructive wildfire season in terms of area burned across the province of B.C., and some of that smoke from the wildfires in the Prince will become quite noticeable across the southern half through Tuesday.As of July 3rd, there are 47 wildfires classified as out of control by the BC Wildfire Service.Long Range Outlook-Temperatures will remain well above seasonal for western sections of British Columbia right through Thursday before temperatures drop into next weekend. MONTREAL — The forest fire situation in Quebec is improving after recent rain, the province's wildfire prevention agency said Monday, though large blazes continue to burn and fire risk remains high in dry areas along James Bay.The risk of forest fires is now much lower in eastern and southern Quebec, Stéphane Caron, a spokesman for the agency SOPFEU, said in an interview."The rain that fell in the past few days helped contain the fires and, as well, the work that has been done over the past month means that even if the fires are still not extinguished, under control, they're much safer than they were, the communities," he said, adding firefighters have worked to secure areas around the blazes where they may threaten communities.There are currently more than 100 fires burning in the province, including 67 in what SOPFEU calls its "intensive protection zone" — where it systematically fights all fires. Only three of those are considered out of control, particularly in the area around Chibougamau, Que., about 416 kilometres northwest of Quebec City.But while the provincewide situation has improved, Caron said the risk from the fires isn't yet over."There are still risks because the blazes are still huge," he said.One fire burning near the city of Lebel-sur-Quévillon — which was evacuated twice in June — covers more than 4,000 square kilometres, he said.That fire has been contained, but is still not controlled, he said, explaining that a contained fire is not currently advancing but could in the future, while a controlled fire is definitely stopped."So we have to aim to control the fires, because if there is another period of drought, another period of very hot weather, the fires could rise from their ashes and cause us problems again," he said.Between 1,300 and 1,400 firefighters are on the ground, Caron said, including 150 South Korean wilderness firefighters who arrived in the province on Sunday.While Quebec's wilderness firefighters usually work up to 24 days straight, Caron said their work usually comes to an end at points over the summer. That included $24 million on aircraft and around $7 million on personnel. A total of 3.4 million hectares of forest land were burned.The smoke from the fires reached North Dakota, which is over 2,000 km south. The smoke also headed east, through the Maritimes and into Portugal.During N.W.T.'s extremely aggressive fire season, no injuries or deaths were reported. However, a report of the season outlined that there is room for improvement for firefighter working conditions.The report mentions that demanding fire seasons require more personnel. The territorial government can utilize 28 five-person firefighting crews. The report suggests that the configuration should change to 36 four-person crews.The 2014 fire seasons also highlighted the need for better communication. The report shares that the government needs to improve communication with communities on the status of adjacent fires. A new telescope has just launched into space that will 'shed light' onto the unseen universe of dark matter and dark energy.There are two grand mysteries of the universe that currently occupy the thoughts of astronomers and astrophysicists.From what we can see with our telescopes, galaxies behave very strangely. How they rotate, how they interact with each other, and how their gravity bends light, they appear to have far more 'stuff' in them than just with stars, gas, and dust we can detect. Point any kind of telescope you want out into the universe, from gamma ray down to radio, and there's just no way to account for the extra mass these galaxies (including our own) appear to contain. Scientists call this unseen, unaccounted-for portion dark matter.On an even larger scale, our universe is growing, with galaxies getting farther apart from each other as time goes on. The strange part is that the expansion of the universe is speeding up, but there isn't anything we can see or detect driving this acceleration. The reason for it is currently called dark energy.On Saturday, July 1, 2023, a new telescope launched into space that may help us figure out the mysteries behind dark matter and dark energy. The European Space Agency's Euclid mission was boosted into orbit by a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, and is now making the journey out to Lagrange Point 2, roughly 1.5 million kilometres 'behind' Earth (as viewed from the Sun).According to the ESA:Euclid will observe billions of galaxies out to 10 billion light-years to create the largest, most accurate 3D map of the Universe, with the third dimension representing time itself. This detailed chart of the shape, position and movement of galaxies will reveal how matter is distributed across immense distances and how the expansion of the Universe has evolved over cosmic history, enabling astronomers to infer the properties of dark energy and dark matter. This will help theorists to improve our understanding of the role of gravity and pin down the nature of these enigmatic entities."Today we celebrate the successful launch of a ground-breaking mission that places Europe at the forefront of cosmological studies," Carole Mundell, ESA's Director of Science, said on Saturday. "If we want to understand the Universe we live in, we need to uncover the nature of dark matter and dark energy and understand the role they played in shaping our cosmos. To address these fundamental questions, Euclid will deliver the most detailed map of the extra-galactic sky. A swarm of 30,000 bees split from a hive on the roof of a downtown Ottawa office building Tuesday and moved into a tree on Sparks Street.According to the Sparks Street BIA, the bees are part of a colony that lives in hives on top of 181 Queen Street, the office building that houses the CBC.Kevin McHale, executive director of Sparks Street BIA, told Radio-Canada that Morguard, the real estate company that owns the building, called a beekeeper to get the situation under control.McHale said the colony, estimated by the beekeeper to be about 30,000 strong, was so heavy the bees broke a branch off the tree in which they had taken up temporary residence.Morguard, the company that owns the building where the bees used to live, called a beekeeper to capture and relocate the colony.
