For the first time in the research of ancient Jerusalem, physical evidence uncovered in recent excavations has proven Jewish historian Josephus Flavius’s account of the 70 CE conquest of the holy city.Through computer analysis of 2,000-year-old Roman ballistics uncovered in Israel Antiquities Authority excavations in Jerusalem’s Russian Compound near modern Jerusalem’s Municipality building, archaeologist Kfir Arbiv claims he has demonstrated the veracity of Josephus’s narrative charted in his book, “The History of the Jewish War against the Romans.”“It is extremely exciting to be proving the narrative of Josephus onsite,” Arbiv told The Times of Israel on Sunday, Tisha B’av, the Jewish day of mourning that annually commemorates the conquests of Jerusalem.All data gathered onsite was compared to Josephus’s contemporary descriptions of a battle near the city’s third line of defense — which were proven accurate, said Arbiv. This is significant because while Josephus’s histories are one of the sole contemporary sources of the fall of Jerusalem, they are treated carefully by scholars due to his colorful personal history.Born Joseph Ben Matthias to a priestly family circa 38 CE, Josephus was a leading Jewish military leader during the Jewish revolt until he was captured by the Romans in 67 CE. Taken in chains to Rome, Josephus eventually won his freedom through a “prophecy” that Vespasian would become emperor. Newly loyal to Rome, Josephus returned to Jerusalem with Vespasian’s son Titus for the conquest in 70 CE, ostensibly to act as a mediator. Reviled by both sides, Josephus failed to quell the flames of war and eventually returned to Rome where he composed his histories.“With the help of the computer, I located all the ballista exactly where they were found. I took into account the local topography and the location of the Second Temple-period city fortification walls, and I made ballistic calculations, including the launching angle, and the throwing distance of the stones,” said Arbiv, who co-directed the excavations with the IAA’s Dr. Rina Avner. The research is part of Arbiv’s Tel Aviv University MA thesis.According to the IAA, the Roman Arsenal exposed in the Russian Compound excavations so far includes hundreds of ballista stones. The sizes vary and some were launched from hi-tech bolt-throwing machines to a distance of 100–400 meters, whereas other small sling stones were used by infantry. It’s amazing.”The IAA’s Russian Compound excavations have previously exposed part of the Third Wall, the third line of fortifications that surrounded outer Jerusalem.This new research is, in part, aimed at proving the probable spots in which the Roman army first penetrated the city. Future efforts will likely turn to this topic, said Arbiv.There are already indications of unusual activity found in the Russian Compound dig. Near a location nicknamed “Cat’s Square,” the excavators discovered a large concentration of ballista stones, including some broken after use. According to Arbiv, the Roman army evidently viewed it as a strategic point and upwards of a thousand ballista stones were launched here.“This is not surprising, as whoever controls this spot dominates the whole area and the fate of the city. This aligns with Josephus’ account that Titus commanded to penetrate the city from the northwestern side of the city wall,” Arbiv said in an IAA press release.“The Temple was destroyed in 70 CE, after a four-month siege and an intensive battle led by the Roman general Titus in order to conquer the city and suppress the revolt initiated by the Jews four years earlier. ROME (AP) — A trunk with its lid left open. A wooden dishware closet, its shelves caved in. Three-legged accent tables topped by decorative bowls. These latest discoveries by archaeologists are enriching knowledge about middle-class lives in Pompeii before Mount Vesuvius’ furious eruption buried the ancient Roman city in volcanic debris.Pompeii’s archaeological park, one of Italy’s top tourist attractions, announced the recent finds on Saturday. Its director, Gabriel Zuchtriegel, said the excavation of rooms in a “domus,” or home, first unearthed in 2018 had revealed precious details about the domestic environment of ordinary citizens of the city, which was destroyed in 79 AD.In past decades, excavation largely concentrated on sumptuous, elaborately frescoed villas of Pompeii’s upper-class residents. But archaeology activity in the sprawling site, near modern-day Naples, has increasingly focused on the lives of the middle class as well as of servants and other enslaved people.“In the Roman empire, there was an ample chunk of the population that struggled with their social status and for whom ‘daily bread’ was anything but a given,” Zuchtriegel said. “A vulnerable class during political crises and food shortages, but also ambitious about climbing the social ladder.”The finds unveiled on Saturday include furnishings and household objects in the domus, which was dubbed the House of the Larario for an area of a home devoted to domestic spirits known as lares. The home unearthed in 2018 has one in the courtyard.Zuchtriegel noted that while the courtyard also had an exceptionally well-adorned cistern, “evidently, the [financial] resources weren’t enough to decorate the five rooms of the home.” One room had unpainted walls and an earthen floor apparently used for storage.In a bedroom, archeologists found the remains of a bed frame with a trace of fabric from the pillow. The kind of bed is identical to three, cot-like beds unearthed last year in a tiny room in another residence that archaeologists believe doubled as a storeroom and sleeping quarters for a family of enslaved inhabitants of Pompeii.The bedroom findings announced Saturday also included the remains of a wooden trunk with an open lid. Although the weight of beams and ceiling panels that crashed down in the wake of the volcanic explosion heavily damaged the trunk, among the objects found inside was an oil lamp decorated with a bas-relief depicting the ancient Greek deity Zeus being transformed into an eagle. Nearby was a small, three-legged round table, similar to the accent tables in vogue today.Exposing the storeroom revealed a wooden closet, its backboard still intact but the shelves caved in. Archaeologists believe the closet had at least four panel doors and held cookware and dishes for the nearby kitchen. KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russian forces began an assault Saturday on two key cities in the eastern Donetsk region and kept up rocket and shelling attacks on other Ukrainian cities, including one close to Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, Ukraine's military and local officials said.Both cities of Bakhmut and Avdiivka have been considered key targets of Russia’s ongoing offensive across Ukraine’s east, with analysts saying Moscow needs to take Bakhmut if it is to advance on the regional hubs of Sloviansk and Kramatorsk.“In the Donetsk direction, the enemy is conducting an offensive operation, concentrating its main efforts on the Bakhmut and Avdiivka directions. It uses ground attack and army aviation,” the Ukrainian General Staff said on Facebook.The last Russian strike on Sloviansk was July 30, but Ukrainian forces are fortifying their positions around the city in expectation of new fighting.“I think it won’t be calm for long. HAPPY CAMP, Calif. — A wildfire burning in a remote area just south of the Oregon border appears to have caused the deaths of tens of thousands of Klamath River fish, the Karuk Tribe said Saturday.The tribe said in a statement that the dead fish of all species were found Friday near Happy Camp, California, along the main stem of the Klamath River.Tribal fisheries biologists believe a flash flood caused by heavy rains over the burn area caused a massive debris flow that entered the river at or near Humbug Creek and McKinney Creek, said Craig Tucker, a spokesman for the tribe.The debris entering the river led to oxygen levels in the Klamath River dropping to zero on Wednesday and Thursday nights, according to readings from tribal monitors at a nearby water quality station.A photo from the Karuk taken about 20 miles (32 kilometers) downstream from the flash flood in the tributary of Seiad Creek showed several dozen dead fish belly up amid sticks and other debris in thick, brown water along the river bank.The full extent of the damage is still unclear but the tribe said late Saturday it appears the fish found dead 20 miles downstream were swept there after their deaths and that the fish kill isn’t impacting the entire river.“We think the impact is limited to 10 or 20 miles of river in this reach and the fish we are seeing in Happy Camp and below are floating downstream from the ‘kill zone,'” the tribe said in an updated statement, adding it continues to monitor the situation.The McKinney Fire, which has burned more than 90 square miles (233 square kilometers) in the Klamath National Forest, this week wiped out the scenic hamlet of Klamath River, where about 200 people lived. The premier is asking residents in central Newfoundland communities to prepare for potential evacuation due to growing forest fires in the region.No evacuation order has been given as yet. Premier Andrew Furey says the move is not to create panic, but readiness because of the quickly changing situation.The premier and Minister of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture Derrick Bragg spoke from Gander Sunday morning.Furey said that smoke and poor air quality in the region were major concerns leading to the decision to call for preparations."The fire is not on a direct route to these communities at this particular time," Furey said. "However, the change in wind patterns could have significant smoke impacts on these communities, Bishop's Falls and Grand Falls-Windsor."Furey said people living in these areas with lung issues, such as asthma, should consider leaving in advance of the heavy smoke.The Premier has also asked "Central Health to begin a triage evacuation plan for people in their facilities." That includes the hospital in Grand Falls-Windsor, as well as the long term care facilities and personal care homes in the area.As for the Connaigre Peninsula, Furey said the state of emergency was declared there because of the Bay d'Espoir highway closure. He said a ferry is being re-routed to help move people and goods to and from the area."We are establishing a ferry currently and it's on its way to provide services from Fortune to Hermitage, and that will be established in short order."He says the current situation is constantly changing."Let's hope we get some rain and all of this has been for nothing," said Furey.Fire ban expanded to entire province-The press conference came just an hour after Minister Bragg expanded the regional outdoor fire ban to the entire province due to ongoing dry, windy weather.-Despite the pre-existing fire ban in the metro area, the St. John's Regional Fire Department said they responded to 8 bonfires and 2 brush fires yesterday. When asked about people violating the fire ban rules, Bragg had a simple message: "Knock it off!"Bragg said he's pleading with the public to be fire smart and to protect the province's communities."Last night, I saw two people throw a cigarette butt out their window while I was driving back home," he said. "I thought it was absolutely crazy. That's reckless. We do not need reckless activities in this province."Furey echoed Bragg's sentiment. A noisy scene transpired outside the public library in downtown Edmonton Saturday morning, as protesters and counter-protesters clashed over an event where a drag queen was invited to read to children.Around 11 a.m., Felicia Bonée, with their pink hair and wearing a necklace and a long purple dress, was positioned in front of Pride-coloured balloons and read and sang to dozens of children and parents in the Stanley A. Milner library.Meanwhile, a crowd of about 50 people held ground outside, on the corner of 100th Street and 102nd Avenue. One side was against the library-sponsored event, suggesting it wasn't safe for kids. The other, sporting Pride colours and playing music, was there to support the LGBT community."A lot of hate-filled, angry people are emboldened by current political figures that seem to be kind of rising in power," said Rob Browatzke, who attended the counter-protest. Browatzke co-owns Evolution Wonderlounge, Edmonton's gay bar."They're frustrated because they're dying off. That [cis-gender], white, straight world that they thought that they were in charge of is actually not the real world at all."The event held Saturday morning, called Over the Rainbow Storytime, was part of the Edmonton Public Library's summer programming. The event's description said it would be a family-friendly program, suitable for children from preschool age to 12 years old, featuring stories of diversity and inclusion, singing and "maybe even a little glitter."Family Guy's Family Law Reform planned a protest outside the library ahead of the event, however. Organizers claimed they were concerned the event would be sexual in nature, thus inappropriate for children."What we are against is the propagandization of our children toward what could be considered sexual, as well as political, ideologies," said Bradley Chalmers, an organizer and member of Family Guy's.The group describes itself as a family law reform advocate, according to its website. It has made several Facebook posts in recent weeks that suggest drag queens would somehow manipulate, groom, or sexualize children.Word of the protest made it to local LGBT advocates, who then organized a counter-protest."We all rallied together and we decided that this is not going to be something that we're going to allow in our streets," said Kayle Mackintosh, one of the counter-protest organizers.Roma Schroter, another organizer, said the protesters' beliefs are prejudiced and they are spreading a stigma based on falsehoods."They are taking away from an incredibly inclusive and adorable event, frankly," Schroter said.Justin Duval was walking nearby with his wife and two daughters, Anna and Evelin. They saw the crowd and eventually learned what people were doing on the corner, so they went inside for storytime, Duval said.The family enjoys visiting the library, he said, particularly for its range of programming that can introduce his children to issues and start conversations."Having these events gives an opportunity for us to be able to educate, first, our children and to normalize... what the spectrum is, in terms of differences in sexuality and orientation," Duval said.Duval said the event did not contain adult content, when asked about the protesters' concerns.Anna and Evelin told CBC News it was their first time attending an Over the Rainbow Storytime event, and they really enjoyed it.

LGBT Ugandan refugees who fled the country due to persecution, pictured here in 2018.Ugandan officials have banned a prominent LGBT rights group in a major setback for the community there.Sexual Minorities Uganda (Smug) has been ordered to shut down with "immediate effect" for not registering properly with authorities.The campaign group decried the order as a "clear witch hunt" by the government against LGBT Ugandans.Sexual minorities face widespread persecution in Uganda, where anti-gay and transphobic views are common.Gay relationships are illegal in Uganda, where they can be punished by up to life in prison for committing "unnatural offences."Official police data shows that 194 people were charged under the offence between 2017 and 2020, including 25 who went on to be convicted."This is a clear witch hunt rooted in systematic homophobia, fuelled by anti-gay and anti-gender movements," said Smug's director Frank Mugisha, who is a gay Ugandan activist.He accused authorities of treating members of Uganda's LGBT minority as second-class citizens and trying to erase their existence completely.On Friday Ugandan officials announced they were halting Smug's operations because the campaign group, founded in 2004, had failed to register its name with the National Bureau for Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) properly.It is the same reason given last year when dozens of civil society groups - including pro-democracy organisations - were also banned by Ugandan authorities.This time officials say that the issue stems from Smug's name itself - Sexual Minorities Uganda.In a statement the NGO Bureau acknowledged that Smug had attempted to register with authorities in 2012, but that the application had been rejected because Smug's full name was considered "undesirable."President Yoweri Museveni, who has been in office since 1986, has made homophobic comments in the past - including in a 2016 CNN interview when he called gay people "disgusting."Although there are no laws specifically criminalising being transgender in Uganda, trans people are regularly prosecuted for other offences including "personation" (false representation), according to reports compiled by rights organisations.Since its establishment almost two decades ago, Smug has campaigned for the rights of LGBT people in Uganda by promoting access to health services and supporting members of the LGBT community to live openly.It has also taken legal action to protect gay people from hostility, including in 2010 when it successfully petitioned a Ugandan judge to order a newspaper to stop publishing the names and photographs of gay Ugandan men under the headline "hang them".The group said several of its members had been attacked or harassed as a result of the article - including one woman who was almost killed when her neighbours began throwing stones at her house.At the time, Ugandan politicians were preparing to debate whether or not to introduce the death penalty for same-sex relationships - a legislative amendment that attracted widespread international condemnation before eventually being dropped.More recently, Smug has vocally criticised anti-gay speeches delivered by Ugandan politicians - including in the run up to national elections in 2021."The politicians are using the LGBT community as a scapegoat to gain support and win votes and it is fuelling homophobia," Smug's director Frank Mugisha told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.
