Families rushed to retrieve belongings from homes and escape an advancing flow of lava from a nearby volcano Tuesday on the Spanish island of La Palma, creating traffic jams on some of the narrow roads in the town of La Laguna.The lava was seen flowing westward to the coast in three huge tongues, incinerating everything in their path, including a school, although no fatalities or injuries have been reported.Lorena, a 42-year-old resident of La Laguna, raced to salvage furniture and electrical appliances from her parents' home in the town."We are nervous. We are taking out the most essential things like mattresses, the fridge," she said, with her family's possessions strewn around the backyard.The town was evacuated on Monday, but emergency workers gave residents a two-hour window on Tuesday to return home and save whatever they could.Nearly a third of the population in the affected areas work in the banana plantation industry, a producers' association said.The largest lava flow was advancing toward a banana plantation and water reservoir as it crept closer to the main street in La Laguna, travelling at about 200 metres an hour, authorities said."This is no joke," said Pedro Jose Alegria, 70, a farmer who had returned to La Laguna to feed his donkey.Speaking from an ash-covered pickup truck, he said he fears for several of the greenhouses he owns on a banana plantation that looks out to the Atlantic Ocean.Alegria's immediate concern is that the lava will destroy the intricate piping that feeds the plantation's sprinklers. But there are also worries the volcanic activity will make the groundwater unusable for drinking as well as water-intensive banana farming."The volcano may not kill us directly, but it's going to make a lot of us go bankrupt," Alegria said of the lava that began moving across the island's countryside after Sunday's eruption.Despite the little arable land on La Palma, farming is the island's main source of income. Israel has reportedly asked the United States and European Union to adopt its soon-to-be-updated rules for Israeli travelers, under which some people who have not received coronavirus booster shots will no longer be recognized as vaccinated.Starting October 1, anyone who has not received a booster shot six months after getting a second vaccine dose will have their Green Pass revoked, denying them entry to certain venues and events that require proof of vaccination, recovery from COVID-19 or a negative test result.According to a Channel 12 news report Tuesday, Israel wants the US and EU member states to use the Health Ministry’s criteria concerning the vaccination status of arriving Israeli travelers, which could cause those who were inoculated but have not received a third vaccine dose in the six months since to be denied entry to these countries.The network said the matter was raised last week in meetings attended by Health Ministry officials and Prime Minister Naftali Bennett.Last week, Israel reached an agreement with the EU to mutually recognize vaccine certificates –– though it does not supersede entry requirements of each member state — and is in talks with the US on a similar agreement.The TV report did not specify if Israel was also considering applying its new Green Pass criteria to vaccinated travelers from other countries — requiring them to have received a booster to enter if six months have passed since they were first considered fully vaccinated — or only wants other countries to enforce this standard for Israelis overseas.Israel has been a pioneer in offering booster shots, with all those over 12 eligible to get them five months after vaccination.
