New Delhi, June 19 (IANS) A total of 42 countries, both endemic and non-endemic, have reported 2,103 laboratory confirmed cases of monkeypox, since the beginning of the year, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).The global health body has, in a significant move, dropped the endemic country distinction for monkeypox in bid to unify responses.'We are removing the distinction between endemic and non-endemic countries, reporting on countries together where possible, to reflect the unified response that is needed,' the WHO said in a statement.'A total of 2,103 laboratory confirmed cases, one probable case, and one death have been reported to WHO from 42 countries, between January 1 to June 15,' it added.However, the majority of cases (98 per cent) have been reported since May 2022, the WHO said.Europe has been the most hit with 84 per cent of the confirmed cases being reported from the region. This is followed by 12 per cent in the Americas, while Africa accounts for 3 per cent cases.Of these cases, a whopping 99 per cent are reported in men, and 'most self-identify as men who have sex with other men', the UN agency said.The WHO noted that the unexpected appearance of monkeypox in several regions in the initial absence of epidemiological links to areas that have historically reported monkeypox, suggests that there may have been 'undetected transmission' for some time.However, it noted that clinical presentation of monkeypox cases during the latest outbreak have been markedly different than that of the 'classically described' symptoms such as fever, swollen lymph nodes, followed by a centrifugal evolving rash.The newly presented features include 'presentation of only a few or even just a single lesion, lesions that begin in the genital or perineal/perianal area and do not spread further, lesions appearing at different (asynchronous) stages of development, and the appearance of lesions before the onset of fever, malaise and other constitutional symptoms,' the global health body said.Some patients may also present with sexually transmitted infections and should be tested and treated appropriately.Further, the modes of transmission during sexual contact remain unknown; while it is known that close physical and intimate skin-to-skin or face-to-face contact can lead to transmission (through direct contact with infectious skin or lesions).It it also not clear what role sexual bodily fluids, such as semen and vaginal fluids, play in the transmission of monkeypox, the WHO said.The WHO has urged all countries to be 'alert for signals related to patients presenting with a rash that progresses in sequential stages a' macules, papules, vesicles, pustules, scabs, at the same stage of development over all affected areas of the body - that may be associated with fever, enlarged lymph nodes, back pain, and muscle aches'.The UN health body is set to hold an emergency meeting on June 23 to determine whether to classify the global monkeypox outbreak as a public health emergency of international concern.The highest level of warning by the global health body currently applies only to the Covid-19 pandemic, polio, and Ebola in the past.--IANSrvt/vd-MENAFN19062022000231011071ID1104397692

How libraries are being used to corrupt children and what you can do about in-jun 6,19,22-By Sarah Quale — Drag queen story hours are popping up in libraries across the country. Are they isolated events or part of a larger, intentional movement to destroy God’s design for the human person? A small library in a southern Maryland town provides some insight into how this battle has advanced, who’s behind it, how it’s funded, and what local communities can do to effectively respond.

Underneath what the pro-life movement calls “the culture of death” is a dark, tangled mess of spiritual brokenness. The symptoms of this brokenness—whether they present as abortion, euthanasia, fractured families, human trafficking, pornography, homosexuality, or gender dysphoria—reveal to us the presence of a much larger sickness and a much bigger target. They show us the tragic consequences of sin and of rejecting God’s design for the human person. To destroy the human made in the image of God—to destroy inherent value, dignity, and thus, personhood—the Enemy must systematically dismantle each of God’s design elements—life, marriage, family, sexuality, and gender (Genesis 1:26-28). What we are witnessing everywhere in our culture today is a direct assault on these elements.Much of this destructive work has been accomplished over the last century in America, but the goal of the new sexual revolution raging around us today is to finish the job. This battle has erupted in a rather unlikely place, at least for those who still view America’s traditional institutions with hope and nostalgia. A small library in a southern Maryland town provides some insight into how this battle has advanced, who’s behind it, how it’s funded, and what local communities can do to effectively respond.Discovery and exposure-The Lexington Park Library in St. Mary’s County, Maryland, first came under fire in March of 2017 when local homeschool mom, Georgia Kijesky, discovered that several libraries were planning to host a graphic sex-ed workshop for 12–17-year-old children. The workshop was co-sponsored by the libraries and the Southern Maryland Area Secular Humanists (SMASH). It was promoted as strictly kids-only and led by Bianca Palmisano, a Planned Parenthood-certified sex educator, author of Safer Sex for Trans Bodies, and founder of Intimate Health Consulting. As a result of Kijesky’s efforts to expose the workshop and pressure the county commissioning boards, the St. Mary’s County Library Board of Trustees cancelled the workshop at Lexington Park and issued a press release. However, SMASH later revived the effort, and the workshop was held without official library sponsorship.Fast forward to September, 2017, when Kijesky discovered the sexually explicit instruction manual, The Little Black Book for Girlz: A Book on Healthy Sexuality, presented alongside similar books in Lexington Park’s teen section. The display was part of Banned Books Week—an annual event organized by the American Library Association to combat censorship. Kijesky again took her concerns to a St. Mary’s County Board of Commissioners public forum, which triggered a larger effort to change the way the library board of trustees is governed and held accountable to the taxpayers. More on that later.A few years before Kijesky’s exposure of her local library’s involvement in LGBTQ activism, San Francisco was birthing a new phenomenon that she would eventually come face to face with: The drag queen story hour (DQSH). According to Drag Queen Story Hour, the non-profit group that jumpstarted the initiative, bringing costumed drag queens into libraries to read to young children and their parents “captures the imagination and play of the gender fluidity of childhood and gives kids glamorous, positive, and unabashedly queer role models.” DQSHs have expanded into Drag 101—workshops that “demonstrate the art of creating a character, costuming, and applying makeup” to tweens and teens. As the movement has grown, serious controversy has erupted in small-town America.the backlash and the money trails-DQSHs and Drag 101 events have seen a sustained backlash of petitions and protests from Christian communities, resulting in cancellations in several states, including Ohio, South Carolina, Louisiana, and Kentucky. The events have sometimes served as doorways for sex offenders to gain access to children, made evident by recent reports in Texas and Ohio, where library board officials revealed there were no background checks in place to vet any of the performers.Some of these events are paid for by the libraries themselves, through funds provided by the American Library Association (which stem from taxpayer-funded federal grants). Libraries also use state and local taxpayer money to host and promote the events. In other instances, the events are privately funded, but most event sponsors take advantage of federal grants from the CDC for comprehensive sex education and HIV prevention. In these cases, community healthcare organizations and LGBTQ-advocacy groups use CDC grant money to bring the events into libraries. An example of this relationship was recently uncovered in Ohio, when Equitas Health used part of its HIV prevention grant from the CDC to support a Drag 101 event at the Licking County Library. The event was promoted as a “safe-sex for teens” workshop by the Newark Ohio Pride Coalition. It was cancelled after a large public outcry led to the Ohio House Speaker’s involvement in shutting it down.When communities across the United States first became aware of DQSHs, the media reported the backlash surrounding the events, and the events themselves, as isolated and disconnected. Only now are we beginning to see the movement’s intentional progress over time. But missing from this overarching storyline are the deep alliances forged between the LGBTQ community and the American Library Association (ALA), which has received over $20 million in taxpayer money over the past 10 years.Not isolated, but organized-The backbone of the LGBTQ community’s alliance with the American library system is firmly structured within the massive ALA organization, including, but not limited to, the:The roundtable provides tools and resources to promote acceptance of the LGBTQ lifestyle through the American library system and recommends reading lists for libraries with “significant gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or queer/questioning content, aimed at children and youth from birth to age 18.” These reading materials, when challenged by parents like Kijesky, are defended by the other parts of the system, under the banner of anti-censorship.Intentional promotion-To answer the backlash over DQSHs and Drag 101 events, the ALA created its #LibrariesRespond campaign to provide policy materials and resources to “defend pride at the local library.” The ALA also released an FAQ on responding to and preparing for controversial events and speakers.To help librarians promote acceptance of the LGBTQ lifestyle and DQSHs in resistant communities, the ALA published a blog post on how to be a “secret librarian advocate operative.” The post was written by Tess Goldwasser, a former member of the ALA’s Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Roundtable and a librarian in St. Mary’s County—the very library system Kijesky had exposed. Goldwasser’s suggestions included taking careful steps to bring Roundtable-approved materials into the library and inviting local secular humanist, PFLAG, and GLADD chapters to host programs that distort God-designed sexuality and gender. “So you’re not doing drag queen story hour (yet), but you’re probably doing regular old story time, right?” prompted Goldwasser. “Try to ‘sneak’ inclusive messages into your current programs. For instance, if you’re reading a story about a Mama Bear and a Papa Bear…just change it to be about 2 Papa Bears!” she wrote.Update (6/17/19): The ALA has since scrubbed Goldwasser’s name from the byline of the article because of the attention this research has brought upon the ALA and the St. Mary’s County library’s upcoming DQSH. This intentional, under-the-radar work is occurring right now in towns all across America, guided by the ALA. But in Kijesky’s situation in southern Maryland, the battle there has taken a sharp turn.-Loopholes and lawlessnessAfter the pushback against the sex-ed workshop and the pornographic book display in 2017—events that were defended by the St. Mary’s County Library Board of Trustees—Kijesky and other local activists urged their elected officials to pass House Bill 136 to bring the library board under the governance of the St. Mary’s County Commissioners. Up to that time, the library board was the only board in the county without any external accountability, even though the library is a taxpayer-funded entity.Kijesky and others fought hard, but after intense pressure from the Left, the accountability language in HB 136 was gutted, keeping the power solely in the hands of the board members. The citizens of St. Mary’s County continue to have no say and no control over the decisions made by this ungoverned board, which is made up of the very people who brought the sex-ed workshop to St. Mary’s County in the first place.A direct challenge-The St. Mary’s County Library Board of Trustees has since adopted a meeting room policy, based on published ALA strategies, that provides immunity for controversial speakers and events. This policy makes it impossible for community pressure to result in cancellations. Now, SMASH has “reserved a meeting room according to library policy” to bring DQSH and Drag 101 to the Lexington Park Library on Sunday, June 23rd. As of publication of this article, the event has yet to appear on the library’s public calendar..How can the people of Southern Maryland respond? Georgia Kijesky is now the leader of the Personhood Alliance affiliate Personhood Maryland, whose mission is to “engage in activism that preserves and defends the Family and Christianity—both of which are obviously being heavily persecuted in Maryland,” says Kijesky. Plans are underway for a prayer vigil outside the Lexington Park Library on Sunday, June 23rd, along with other efforts to bring light to what’s happened there. “Even though we can’t get this upcoming event cancelled, we can still stay one step ahead,” says Kijesky. “We can educate people on where this movement is headed, and we can organize watchmen here in Maryland to continue to expose the systems put in place to bring these direct, sustained attacks on God’s design.”What can the average person do? We now know that holding DQSHs, sex-ed workshops, and other LGBTQ-promoting events at libraries is part of a much larger, taxpayer-funded agenda. So what can the average person do? Here are some actions you can take in your community: Check the following links to see if your state has a chapter of DQSH, PFLAG, the American Humanist Society, Gay-Straight Alliance Network, and Planned Parenthood Generation Action. Subscribe to their email lists so you have advanced knowledge of what’s coming.Not every library advertises DQSH, so look for promotions on local news websites and in community newspapers. Check for flyers posted on community boards in your local coffee shop or grocery store.Find out how your county library board of trustees is governed according to the laws in your state. Understand the chain of command. Know your rights and theirs. If you discover an event, raise awareness in your community. Speak at public forums and city council meetings, create a petition drive, or write a letter to the editor in your local paper.Contact your mayor’s office to see if they are willing to help you. If you do not have a mayor, find out which elected officials are responsible for overseeing the library finances and appointing members to the Library Board of Trustees. Get in touch with those officials.  Call the library to voice your concerns. Christians must recognize that the gender revolution, like any Progressive social movement, reaches out to remove children from the influence of the Word of God and replace biblical truth with moral relativism.  Relativism is the common thread woven into all efforts to destroy the image of God in the human person. The Witherspoon Institute gives us critical insight here:“Humanity cannot escape the limits inscribed upon it. It is impossible to transgress biological boundaries stamped on human nature without the basic categories of human existence unraveling…There are no boundaries to the sexual and gender revolutions; only the wake of human carnage that results from suppressing the truth.”Some people have a real, painful struggle with their gender and sexuality, not because there is no absolute truth, but because sin has corrupted everything and we must reject it (Romans 6:12). The answer to this struggle with sin is not to suppress the truth and live as we choose. It is to submit to Jesus’s sacrificial act of freeing us from the slavery of sin. It is to bury the old Self and walk transformed into the newness of life (Romans 6:4). The southern loop provides access to Old Faithful, the rainbow-colored Grand Prismatic Spring, and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone and its majestic waterfall. It has been nearly a month and a half since the surprise announcement that the United Arab Emirates was establishing open ties with Israel. But analysts say the Palestinian Authority is still at a loss as to how to combat the wave of normalization sweeping the region.“There is no strategy right now — at least not in foreign policy,” Jihad Harb, a Palestinian political analyst based in Nablus, told The Times of Israel.Palestinians have scrambled to respond, switching rhetoric fast enough to give close observers whiplash. And, most damning of all, Bahrain went ahead and joined the UAE in establishing open ties with Israel.In Ramallah’s defense, its options are both unappealing and limited. US President Donald Trump’s proposed peace plan would essentially take the status quo — Israeli military rule over millions of Palestinians — and label it a state. With both Jerusalem and Washington disinterested in Palestinian statehood, it seems unlikely that the PA could get a better deal.“You say you want us to adapt ourselves to these circumstances? That means surrender,” senior Abbas adviser Nabil Shaath told The Times of Israel. “What about demanding that Israel implements our previous agreements?”But who will make that demand? Among Arab regimes, the old slogan that “what the Palestinians accept, we accept, and what they reject, we reject” clearly no longer holds.“The Palestinians were lulled by the reaction to the [Trump] peace plan,” said Hussein Ibish, a senior fellow at the Arab Gulf States Institute. “All Abbas had to do was say ‘no, no, no,’ and the whole Arab and Islamic world got behind him. So in that sense, it went really well. From Saudi Arabia to Egypt, these leaders believe their interests lie with strong Israel rather than with the weak and divided Palestinians.At the same time, the Palestinian leadership in Ramallah has yet to develop a strategy to confront normalization. It has been consistently blindsided by the events of the past month, responding belatedly — with little more at its disposal than condemnations.“[Ramallah] knows this is a disaster. But they’re letting their refusal to take any risks dictate their national strategy in a really damaging way,” said Ibish. “They’re paralyzed. And they’re reveling in their paralysis. It’s tragic.”Some analysts have suggested that the PA leadership is simply waiting for the results of the US presidential elections in November, hoping for a win by Democrat Joe Biden. But it is far from clear that as president, Biden would meaningfully change US policy toward the Palestinians as far as normalization is concerned.The Democratic presidential candidate hailed the agreements between Israel and Arab states — and even sought to take a little credit himself, telling the press that normalization “builds on efforts of multiple administrations to foster broader Arab-Israeli opening.”“Biden will not do anything to prevent Sudan and Oman and Saudi Arabia from going forward and doing the same,” Ibish said, listing states said to be in line for normalization with Israel.No unity-In times of crisis, the Palestinian Authority often feints towards ending the rift that has defined Palestinian politics since 2007: the division between Fatah and the Hamas terror group. Though the move is popular among Palestinians, deep distrust and sharp ideological differences have torpedoed every previous reconciliation attempt.A widely publicized meeting attended by senior figures in 14 major Palestinian factions was given an enormous amount of media coverage in Palestinian state media. For three hours, the leaders — including both Abbas and Hamas terror chief Ismail Haniyeh — gave speeches against normalization.But the public warming — which really began as far as back as June — has failed to lead to any tangible changes on the ground.“The tone was different, but so far there haven’t been any steps taken,” said Khaled Elgindy, a senior fellow at the Middle East Institute. “There isn’t the traditional animosity that we’ve seen, but there isn’t real movement on the ground towards actual reconciliation, towards elections, towards reform in the PA or the PLO.”The numerous Palestinian factions agree on only three things: no to normalization, no to annexation, and no to Jerusalem as the undivided capital of Israel. On every other issue — from their visions for Palestinian statehood to who ought to control Palestinian institutions in the West Bank and Gaza — enormous and perhaps insurmountable gaps between the parties persist.“The status quo is comfortable for both Hamas and Fatah. They’re both secure where they are, and they both have a lot to compromise on, and neither of them is in any rush to unify,” al-Omari said. “They might flirt with this, they might send signals — but really they have no path forward here.”The Palestinian public, which has seen countless rounds of unity talks come and go, seems to agree. According to new polling released last Tuesday by the Palestinian Center for Survey and Policy Research, only 11% believe that “unity will return soon” in the Palestinian leadership.The extent of apathy and distrust in the leadership, in fact, is staggering. When the so-called Abraham Accords were signed last Tuesday, the Palestinian Authority could only rally a few scattered gatherings around the West Bank. The demonstrators filled perhaps half of the intersection, with traffic continuing more or less as usual as motorcycles and small taxis wove around the demonstration.A quick walk down neighboring Palestine Street confirmed that the shops and markets were full, even as the demonstrators chanted slogans, took some photographs, and trickled away. About an hour after the demonstration began, only a few protesters were left in the square.No Friends-Such a weak domestic position may explain the zigzagging the Palestinian Authority has done in its foreign policy.The Palestinian leadership surely knew that the Arab League would reject its resolution to condemn the far more powerful UAE. Egypt, Oman, Bahrain, and others had publicly praised the deal. And the Arab League had already refused the PA’s request for an emergency summit.An early, conciliatory draft resolution leaked to the press showed a Palestinian attempt to stake out a rhetorical win without treading too sharply on the toes of the larger, more powerful states on which Palestinians depend for financial and diplomatic support.But at the session, Palestinian Authority Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki gave a searing speech condemning the Arab League as a hypocritical paper tiger.“It puts us in an embarrassing position to hear other countries explain to us that [Arab League] decisions were nothing more than ink on paper to mollify the Palestinians,” al-Maliki concluded.Shaath admitted that Palestinian Authority officials did not expect the resolution to pass, but added “it was important for us to show the Arab world what was really happening. It was important for us to make the Arab world look at itself and see what remained of its promises.”Why the decision to double down in the face of overwhelming evidence that the resolution would be struck down? Abbas’s unpopularity — 62% of Palestinians in a poll released on Tuesday believe he ought to resign — makes taking a hard line against the UAE a logical political choice.“There’s enormous anger among the Palestinian public. In that sense, the PA was compelled to put forward the resolution it did, so that it could satisfy its constituency, as much as it also wanted to prevent further normalizations,” Harb said.Al-Maliki tried to put on a brave face after the resolution’s failure, saying that the PA was emerging from the Arab League stronger. Few seem to have been convinced.“They’re saying we have our sumud [steadfastness] and our refugee camps and so on, and that’s enough. Well, if that’s enough, then enjoy. The fear is enormous — combined with a sense that there’s nowhere to go,” he concluded.The prominent Palestinian newspaper al-Quds published a long editorial last Wednesday which seemed to indicate that some, at least, wanted to see a concrete way forward.“Protesting and condemnations are not a response to normalization,” the editorial concluded. What would be? It left that for its readers to guess.The PA has long been trapped in a political paradox: on the one hand, any compromise is politically risky, and it lacks the popular legitimacy to make it. On the other hand, its unwillingness to take political risks helps perpetuate the miserable reality of Israeli control over millions of Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza — in turn making its continued rule still more unpopular.“The next intifada is as likely to be directed at [Palestinian] leaders as at the Israeli occupation,” Elgindy said.Abbas is scheduled to address the United Nations General Assembly later this week. Al-Omari suggested that the speech could signal which way the political winds are blowing in the Palestinian camp.If it makes a serious compromise proposal, it will suffer criticism from nationalists and Islamists, from Palestinian refugees and ordinary citizens in the West Bank and Gaza. But if it leans back and relies on merely cursing out the Gulf, its will continue to bleed support anyway.“It’s never too late for them to put their own initiative on the table. It would have been a lot more powerful and effective in March than now. But it’s not too late,” Ibish said.

Palestinian Authority Foreign Minister Riad al-Maliki said Tuesday that the PA will relinquish its role as temporary chairman of the current round of Arab League meetings in protest of the League’s refusal to condemn normalization with Israel.“I inform you today that the State of Palestine is relinquishing its chairmanship in this accursed round of meetings,” al-Maliki said on Tuesday. “Palestine refuses to record in its history that it presided over the moral degeneracy that was revealed in the last meeting…and the normalization steps that followed it, which were in essence a rejection of the work we did between the walls of the Arab League.”Under Arab League rules, the PA would have continued to chair meetings for another six months.Ramallah previously indicated it could leave or suspend its membership in the pan-Arab body after the League rejected a Palestinian resolution to condemn the United Arab Emirates for establishing open ties with Israel.The condemnation was deemed unlikely to pass from the start, as several Arab countries had publicly praised the normalization accords. But the predictability of its demise did little to lessen what many saw as a serious blow to Palestinian diplomacy — a betrayal of the Palestinians’ cause by an organization that had long championed their right to a state. Only a few days after the resolution failed, Bahrain announced that it would normalize ties with Israel as well.For years, Palestinians have relied on the 2002 Arab Peace Initiative, a Saudi-led peace plan backed by the Arab League. US President Donald Trump reiterated his administration’s intention to broker additional normalization agreements between Israel and other countries in the Middle East, during a virtual address Tuesday at the United Nations General Assembly.Highlighting the Israel-UAE and Israel-Bahrain agreements signed last week at the White House, Trump called them “landmark breakthrough with two peace deals in the Middle East after decades of no progress.”He then asserted that other nations will soon sign peace deals with Israel.“They are coming fast, and they know it’s great for them and great for the world,” he said in a recorded message played to the annual meeting of the UN.“We intend to deliver more peace agreements shortly, and I have never been more optimistic for the future of the region. There is no blood in the sand. Rain is falling across Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and southeast New Brunswick as Teddy approaches.At noon AT on Tuesday, Teddy was still a Category 2 hurricane with sustained wind speeds of 165 km/h. It is expected to rapidly weaken and come ashore as a post-tropical storm somewhere between Halifax and Cape Breton early Wednesday morning."Despite not making landfall until early Wednesday, Teddy is a massive storm and conditions in our region will continue to deteriorate today well ahead of it," said CBC meteorologist Jay Scotland."My main areas of concern for P.E.I. are potential outages, local flooding from heavy rain and coastal flooding/erosion due to elevated water levels and high waves, particularly at high tide."Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning and a tropical storm watch for P.E.I.Call in your cancellations to 1-877-236-9350.For Nova Scotia, there are wind, rainfall, storm surge and tropical storm warnings.The key feature of this storm, according to CBC meteorologist Tina Simpkin, is how long it is going to last."This is going to be a wild ride for us," said Simpkin."This starts this afternoon and doesn't really finish up until about tomorrow late in the day.
