Belgium has seven nuclear reactors. Iodine helps reduce radiation build-up in the thyroid gland.
South Korea envoys to meet security adviser McMaster during U.S. trip-[Reuters]-By Christine Kim and Steve Holland-YAHOONEWS-March 8, 2018
SEOUL/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Two South Korean envoys will travel to the United States on Thursday to meet National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster and other officials to discuss this week's meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, officials in Seoul and Washington said.National Security Office head Chung Eui-yong and National Intelligence Service chief Suh Hoon will also speak with other department heads and later possibly meet either U.S. President Donald Trump or Vice President Mike Pence, a South Korean administration official said on Thursday on condition of anonymity. The official said Chung had already spoken to McMaster on the phone shortly after completing this week's visit to North Korea. The South Korean envoys are expected to brief U.S. officials on North Korea's stance on possible future talks with Washington and its apparent willingness to suspend nuclear tests if the security of the North's government is assured.U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis was guarded when asked on Wednesday about the prospect of North Korean engagement."Obviously we're cautiously optimistic that there is some forward progress here," Mattis told reporters at the Pentagon."But we've been optimistic before so we're going to have to watch actions and see if they match words," he said.Tensions over North Korea's nuclear and missile programmes rose to the highest level in years in 2017. Pyongyang pursues its weapons programmes in defiance of U.N. Security Council resolutions, with shrill, bellicose rhetoric coming from both Kim and Trump.North Korea has boasted of its plans to develop a nuclear-tipped missile capable of reaching the mainland United States. However, fears of all-out war eased last month, coinciding with North Korea's participation in the Winter Olympics in the South.Chung and Suh were part of a delegation that travelled to Pyongyang earlier this week in the first encounter between South Korean government officials and Kim Jong Un, where the North Korean leader said he was open to denuclearisation talks with the United States. They also agreed the two Koreas would hold their first summit in more than a decade in late April. South Korean President Moon Jae-in has said sanctions should not be eased for the sake of talks and that nothing less than denuclearisation of North Korea should be the final goal for talks.A senior U.S. administration official said on Thursday no decision on the possibility of the United States joining a summit of North and South Korea was expected to be made at this week's meeting with McMaster. Those discussions would be conducted in private among U.S. officials, the source said.Chung will visit China and Russia after returning from the United States, while Suh Hoon will head to Japan to brief officials.(Reporting by Christine Kim in SEOUL and Steve Holland in WASHINGTON; Additional reporting by Philip Stewart; Editing by Richard Chang and Paul Tait)
Exclusive: Japan's new advanced fighter may be based on existing foreign design - sources-[Reuters]-By Tim Kelly and Nobuhiro Kubo-YAHOONEWS-March 8, 2018
TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan is seeking proposals for a new advanced jet fighter based on an existing Western aircraft and wants American and British cooperation to help kick-start development of the project, which is estimated to cost around $40 billion, three sources said.Japan this month issued a third request for information (RFI) to defense companies, seeking proposals for the new aircraft, dubbed the F-3. Unlike the first two requests, this one went only to foreign companies in the United States and Europe, with a separate, more detailed document delivered to London and Washington, according to the sources, who have direct knowledge of the requests."Japan expects specific proposals for designs based on existing aircraft," said one of the sources. The two previous RFIs did not attract any detailed proposals, he added. The requests for a design based on existing aircraft and the separate documents sent to the British and U.S. governments have not been previously reported. The sources declined to be identified because they are not authorized to speak to the media.Existing airframes Japan could use include the F-35 Lightning II stealth jet built by Lockheed Martin Corp or Boeing Co's F/A-18E/F Super Hornet; and the Eurofighter Typhoon, manufactured by a European consortium including BAE Systems Plc.Japan's last domestically produced jet fighter, the F-2, which entered service in 2000, was built jointly by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) and Lockheed Martin based on the U.S. F-16 multi-role fighter. As Japan's leading fighter maker, MHI, which built the World War Two-era A6M Zero, would anchor the Japanese share of the F-3 project."We are considering domestic development, joint development and the possibility of improving existing aircraft performance, but we have not yet come to any decision," a Ministry of Defense representative said.Building Japan's next-generation fighter based on a foreign aircraft already in service could save money, but come at the expense of advanced features like stealthy shaping. Neither the Typhoon nor Super Hornet are designed to be near-invisible to radar.Lockheed Martin, Boeing and BAE Systems, Britain's largest defense company, were not immediately available for comment.Japan's approaches to the U.S. and British government come as Washington considers its replacement for the F-22 Raptor. Britain, which has sought closer security ties to Japan, including cooperation on developing other defense equipment, may eventually need a fighter to succeed the Typhoon.Japan, which is buying the radar-evading F-35 stealth jet to modernize its air defenses in the face of growing Chinese military strength, wants to introduce a separate air superiority fighter in the 2030s to help deter intrusions into its airspace.Japan has so far struggled to come up with its own design for a new aircraft, raising a question mark over the country's first jet fighter program since the F-2.Japan will need begin preliminary talks with Washington soon if it wants to include anything substantial about the F-3 in the new five-year defense equipment plan, which begins in April 2019. Details on that plan will be released at the end of the year, another of the sources said.Although some defense ministry officials and lawmakers have lobbied for a domestically made aircraft to help sustain Japan defense companies hurt by increased spending on U.S. gear, finance officials have questioned whether that is cost effective.Opting for international cooperation should lower the cost of a new jet by expanding the number of users, spreading the unit cost beyond Japan's air force.Mitsubishi Heavy tested a prototype stealth jet in 2016, the ATD-X or X-2, which cost the Japanese government $350 million to develop.(Reporting by Tim Kelly and Nobuhiro Kubo; Editing by Gerry Doyle)
U.S. F-35 fighter modernization could cost $16 billion through 2024-[Reuters]-By Mike Stone-YAHOONEWS-March 8, 2018
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Pentagon estimates it will cost nearly $16 billion to modernize the fleet of F-35 jets through 2024, a U.S. lawmaker said on Wednesday, citing information provided by the Pentagon on the stealth fighter jet program. The F-35, which is made by Lockheed Martin Corp, has been in production since 2006 and modernization expenses were expected. More than 270 of the jets are currently flying. The F-35 has been widely criticized for being too expensive, including by President Donald Trump and other U.S. officials, who have also pointed to numerous production delays and cost overruns. Wednesday was the first time the $16 billion modernization estimate was made public.Modernization costs would be split between $10.8 billion for software development and $5.4 billion for deploying the updates and other procurement in support of the modernization efforts, Representative Niki Tsongas said at a hearing of a subcommittee of the House of Representatives Armed Services Committee, citing the information provided by the Pentagon.Vice Admiral Mathias Winter, the head of the F-35 Joint Program Office which administers the program, provided some detail on the modernization program."Continuous enhancements and improvements will be made to increase capabilities that make the F-35 more lethal and survivable," Winter told the panel.U.S. lawmakers and independent watchdogs are keeping tabs on the upgrade program after years of cost overruns and delays. U.S. officials said Lockheed Martin has made progress on cutting costs since a major restructuring of F-35 production in 2010.The nearly $16 billion figure represented the outer limit of the modernization costs to bring all of the jets to their maximum potential currently known as "Block 4," Winter told reporters after the hearing. The Pentagon was uncertain all F-35s would necessarily need to undergo this level of modernization.International customers were estimated to be responsible for $3.7 billion of the $10.8 billion software development costs, with the United States shouldering the rest, spending about $1 billion per year over the seven-year plan, Winter said. The costs would be for the more than 270 F-35 jets currently in the field and others that come off the production line in the near future.Winter said he expected Lockheed to deliver 91 jets in 2018.Lockheed and its partners, including Northrop Grumman Corp, United Technologies Corp's Pratt & Whitney and BAE Systems Plc, have been working on building a more cost-effective supply chain.(Reporting by Mike Stone in Washington; Editing by Leslie Adler)

First trailers installed at new settlement industrial zone near Hebron-Site to open on hilltop next to West Bank town of Kiryat Arba, 35 years after state seized land for public use-By Jacob Magid-TOI-8 March 2018
The first four trailers of a new industrial zone were installed on a hilltop adjacent to the Kiryat Arba settlement on Tuesday, the Defense Ministry body responsible for authorizing West Bank construction said.“Four structures were placed on Kiryat Arba’s Hill 22 in accordance with all legal procedures, within a valid building plan and within the confines of state land,” a statement from the Civil Administration explained.“After years of hard work, we are now able to establish a new stake in the Land of Israel!” a post on the southern West Bank settlement’s official Facebook page read. The Mevaser industrial zone was established in memory of fallen soldiers and Benaya Sarel and Eliav Gelman, brothers-in-law who both grew up in Kiryat Arba.Sarel was killed in Rafah during the 2014 Gaza War and Gelman was killed in February 2016 by errant IDF gunfire during a Palestinian stabbing attack at the Gush Etzion Junction while he was on his way home from his army base. The land the zone is situated on, almost a kilometer north of the settlement’s fence, was seized by the state in 1982 and was designated as the building grounds for a Kiryat Arba industrial zone six years later. The official Wafa news agency reported that the land had belonged to three Palestinian families in Hebron.“With this significant stronghold, we are expanding the boundaries of the city and continuing the breakthrough that began with the first settlement of the community some fifty years ago!” the settlement continued in its Tuesday Facebook post. The Peace Now settlement watchdog characterized the move as “Prime Minister Netanyahu’s gift to US President Donald Trump on the day of their meeting.”Netanyahu met with Trump on the sidelines of the American Israel Public Affairs policy conference on Monday.“The new settlement near Hebron is liable to cause significant harm to the lives of dozens of Palestinian families who live nearby who are expected to suffer new security arrangements that will restrict their freedom of movement and harm the daily fabric of their lives,” the left-wing NGO’s statement concluded.
Debt lands hundreds in jail as Gaza economy tanks-[AFP]-Mai Yaghi-YAHOONEWS-March 8, 2018
Gaza City (Palestinian Territories) (AFP) - Sameh al-Madhoun's eyes fill with tears as he recalls his fall from successful businessman to prisoner in a Hamas jail in Gaza.Once the owner of a flourishing car dealership, he is one of more than 40,000 Gazans charged in the last year with failing to keep up debt payments as the economy in the Palestinian enclave collapses.Madhoun, a 40-year-old father of four, has sold most of his possessions, including his house and some of his cars, in a bid to pay back the $3 million (2.4 million euro) debt that dragged his business into bankruptcy."I have paid off half of it until now. I don't know how I will pay off the rest," he told AFP from his jail cell."I don't own anything else now except these debts."A decade-long Israeli blockade and a dispute between Gaza's Islamist rulers and the West Bank-based Palestinian Authorities have brought the coastal territory's economy to its knees. Some 42,500 people were arrested in the past year for failing to pay debtors, according to Hamas police. At least 600 are currently in jail on similar charges.Madhoun has been detained since September, but is allowed to leave two days a week to see his young children and search for the money to pay back his debtors.AFP met him both in prison, after being granted access by Hamas, and during one of his leave days at his former company -- now just a few cars gathering dust."The market collapsed. Even though prices fell there were no customers," Madhoun said."If it continues all the businesses in Gaza will fail."- Economy 'all but dead'-The economy of Gaza, a Palestinian enclave of two million people sandwiched between Israel, Egypt and the Mediterranean, is "all but dead," said Maher Tabba, an official at the territory's Chamber of Commerce. As Gazans' buying power has collapsed, the amount of goods being imported into the Strip has more than halved in just seven months, according to border officials.Tabba said some $112 million-worth of cheques bounced in 2017, up from $62 million in 2016.That, he said, is "clear evidence of an economic collapse".Tabba estimates that several hundred of those currently in prison are owners of struggling or failed businesses. In an attempt to contain the crisis, the Public Prosecutor's Office in Gaza recently announced it would give people an extra month to find the money to service their debts.Much of the world has dropped the policy of imprisoning debtors, but in Gaza it is still common.Israel has maintained a blockade of Gaza since 2007 which it says is necessary to isolate Hamas, with which it has fought three wars since 2008.Rights groups and UN officials say it amounts to collective punishment and strangles the economy in the enclave, where unemployment is around 40 percent. But the Palestinian Authority has also sought in recent months to harm Hamas by damaging Gaza's economy, including by cutting the salaries it still pays to civil servants there despite Hamas taking over the territory in 2007.Hamas has also largely stopped paying civil servants after an attempted reconciliation with the Fatah movement of president Mahmud Abbas stalled.- 'Market collapsed' -The United Nations' top official for Israel and the Palestinian territories says Gaza is facing a "full collapse."Even Israelis are publicly raising the alarm. The head of the army reportedly warned Israel's cabinet recently that a conflict could break out if humanitarian conditions continue to worsen in the Strip.Another trader jailed in November, who didn't want to be named, said 35 people had been laid off when his company went bust."Everything I have built since I set up the company in 2002 was lost in the last year. My debt reached more than a million and a half dollars," he said."I was selling property to service the debt, but I wasn't able to pay it fully."The trader said Gaza's financial woes are a result of the political situation -- and that nothing less than a solution will enable the economy to recover."The market collapsed because of the siege and the crisis with PA salaries," he added."While there is no political stability, there will not be economic security here and the market will not rise again."

Does that comport with full sovereignty? I don’t know, but that’s what we need to live,” he says.Netanyahu adds that Israelis would support a peace agreement with the Palestinians “if they thought it would get them peace.”— Eric Cortellesa-4:49 pm-Palestinians to hold leadership meeting on April 30-The chief Palestinian legislative body will hold its first meeting in nearly a decade next month to elect a new leadership, officials say, a step that could pave the way toward finding a successor to PA President Mahmoud Abbas.According to Ahmad Majdalani, a top Palestinian official, the nearly 700-member Palestine National Council will meet on April 30 in Ramallah. The purpose of the meeting would be to discuss political issues and to fill positions on the powerful Executive Committee, officials said. The 18-member committee is the top Palestinian decision-making body. But it is dominated by an aging leadership and it has struggled to function properly in recent years. One member recently died, while at least two others have been weakened by health issues.Abbas, who turns 83 this month, has never designated a successor, despite suffering from a number of health issues.Although the meeting is not meant to choose a successor, the composition of the new executive committee could give a strong indication of who the front-runners will be.— AP-5:04 pm-Knesset okays law allowing police to hold terrorists’ bodies-The Knesset passes into law legislation allowing police to hold the bodies of Palestinian assailants killed while carrying out terror attacks. The law, which passed 48-10, came about after the High Court of Justice in December ruled the practice could no longer continue without legislation explicitly permitting it.Under the law, district police commanders can set limits on funerals or withhold terrorists’ bodies from their families if there is a fear the funeral could be used to carry out an attack or provide a platform for praising terrorism. The law says terrorists’ funerals in recent years have included praise of terror and incitement for further attacks.6:43 pm-PM says new elections if coalition can’t reach ‘complete solution’ on religious bill-Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says he isn’t seeking elections but that a fresh vote will be held if coalition parties can’t agree on legislation exempting ultra-Orthodox students from military service.Speaking with reporters en route to New York, Netanyahu says he hopes “to continue with a stable government until the end of its days in November 2019.”Laying out his conditions for avoiding elections, Netanyahu says any bill on ultra-Orthodox enlistment must be backed by the entire coalition and that all its members agree to remain in the government until the end of its term.“I want to bring a bill with as wide as possible agreement that will be acceptable to the attorney general and that will pass with a [larger] majority than usual, but also to get a commitment from all the [coalition] partners that we’ll continue together until the end of 2019,” he says.“[Only] a complete solution is acceptable to me, otherwise we’ll need to have elections. I’m not interested in that,” he adds. “With goodwill it is possible to reach a solution.”He also calls on coalition parties to back off their respective ultimatums in order for the government to continue.— Alexander Fullbright-8:29 pm-Arab League affirms Jerusalem as future Palestinian capital-Arab foreign ministers are insisting that Jerusalem must be the capital of a future Palestinian state, even as the US prepares to move its embassy there in a step that has angered the Arab world.A ministerial meeting held today in the Egyptian capital Cairo brought together foreign ministers from the Arab League member-states.Trump in December bucked decades of US foreign policy by formally recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and setting in motion plans to move the US embassy there from Tel Aviv. Earlier this month, the US said the move would take place to coincide with Israel’s 70th birthday. The Palestinians and much of the Arab world have been fuming over Trump’s move. Snow snarls evening commute as storm hits U.S. Northeast-[Reuters]-By Jonathan Allen-YAHOONEWS-March 7, 2018
NEW YORK (Reuters) - The second winter storm in a week hit New York and surrounding states on Wednesday, bringing heavy snow that delayed or canceled flights and snarled traffic at evening rush hour as thousands remained without power from the last nor'easter.Between 8 and 12 inches (20 and 30 cm) of wet, heavy snow, some of it accompanied by thunder and lightning, were forecast for New York City and surrounding New Jersey and Connecticut suburbs through Thursday morning.Wind gusts could create "near-whiteout conditions" for commuters, the National Weather Service said. Some workers were stranded with both buses and trains canceled."I don't know how to go home right now. I am trying to find out the way to go home,” said Huseyin Aktug, a Bloomingdale's employee left stranded at Penn Station.Up to 2 feet (60 cm) of snow was expected in some inland parts of New Jersey, New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts and 18 inches was possible in Maine. The storm will spread with varying degrees of intensity across the Northeast, from western Pennsylvania up into New England, the weather service said.Around half of all scheduled flights were canceled at the three major airports serving New York City, according to the tracking service FlightAware. The website said more than 2,100 flights had been delayed and 2,700 canceled, most of them in the Northeast, as of 8 p.m. EST (0100 GMT Thursday). All schools were closed in Philadelphia, while other schools across the region canceled classes or shortened the school day ahead of the storm, local news media reported.Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy ordered many state workers to head home early on Wednesday afternoon at staggered intervals to avoid traffic snarls on slippery roads. This week's storm was not forecast to have the hurricane-strength winds whipped up at times by the storm last week, but forecasters say strong gusts of 60 miles per hour (100 km per hour) and accumulated snow will still be enough to knock down more power lines.Last week's storm brought major coastal flooding to Massachusetts, killed at least nine people and knocked out power to about 2.4 million homes and businesses in the Northeast. Some 100,000 homes and businesses in the region remained without power on Wednesday. The governors of New Jersey and Pennsylvania declared states of emergency, giving them access to support from the U.S. government if needed. The Amtrak passenger train service canceled some Wednesday trains between Washington and Boston, as well as some services in Pennsylvania and other parts of the Northeast.(Reporting by Jonathan Allen in New York; additional reporting by Scott DiSavino in New York, Barbara Goldberg in Maplewood, New Jersey and Dan Whitcomb in Los Angeles; editing by Jonathan Oatis and Lisa Shumaker)
Papua New Guinea sees long recovery ahead as quake death toll tops 100-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-March 8, 2018
MELBOURNE (Reuters) - Papua New Guinea faces a long road to recovery after the powerful earthquake that hit the nation's rugged highlands more than 10 days ago, with the death toll now believed to have climbed to more than 100, its leader said.PNG Prime Minister Peter O'Neill flew over the worst-hit areas on Wednesday after a magnitude 6.7 aftershock struck the mountainous region already reeling from a 7.5 quake on Feb. 26."There will be no quick fix. The damage from this disaster will take months and years to be repaired," O'Neill said in Tari, the capital of Hela province.Australia and New Zealand sent more helicopters and planes to help deliver food, water and medicine to the remote region, where the government and aid agencies have been scrambling to reach villages stranded by landslides and collapsed roads."Tragically, the Highlands Earthquake has already claimed the lives of an estimated more than 100 Papua New Guineans, with many more still missing and thousands of people injured," O'Neill said in comments published by his office. The Feb. 26 quake forced oil giant ExxonMobil Corp to shut all its gas facilities in the country, which it expects will be down for around eight weeks while it carries out inspections and repairs.Exxon's PNG LNG plant, which exports more than 8 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas a year, is the nation's biggest export earner. The company has said its facilities in the highlands, where it produces and processes gas, and the 700-km (435-mile) pipeline that snakes through the jungle to the coast to feed the LNG plant all stood up well to the earthquake."It has essentially come out unscathed," ExxonMobil senior vice president Neil Chapman told analysts in New York on Wednesday. He said the main challenge to restoring operations was moving people back into the quake-hit area and fixing their living quarters."It's tough to get people in and out in the highlands right now. Accommodation is a challenge. Infrastructure is a challenge," Chapman said. The eight-week estimate for restarting PNG LNG was preliminary, he said. "It could be shorter than that."ExxonMobil's PNG LNG partner Oil Search has been heavily involved in relief efforts while also trying to inspect and repair its oil and gas facilities in the highlands."The integrity of facilities have been maintained and there has been no leakage from any of the facilities," Oil Search Managing Director Peter Botten told Reuters by phone from Port Moresby. He played down talk of looting and security problems at the oil and gas facilities."I don't think that's going on, certainly in no serious way," he said.(Reporting by Sonali Paul in MELBOURNE and Jonathan Barrett in SYDNEY; Editing by Paul Tait)

France's Macron vows to fight anti-Semitism online and off-[Associated Press]-PHILIPPE SOTTO-YAHOONEWS-March 8, 2018
PARIS (AP) — French President Emmanuel Macron pledged Wednesday to fight firmly against anti-Semitism wherever it surfaces, whether in the street or online, and to protect the nation's Jews amid growing concerns about intolerance. In a speech to France's leading Jewish group, he insisted there is no reason for Jews to flee the country, which is home to the world's largest Jewish population outside Israel and the United States."There are hatreds that are rising again, there are the worse kinds of crimes," Macron said at the annual dinner of the CRIF umbrella organization."We have understood, with horror, that anti-Semitism is still alive. And on this issue our response must be unforgiving. France would not be itself if Jewish citizens had to leave because they were afraid," he said.He pledged continued protection for Jewish schools and synagogues and other sites as well as a new government plan to fight racism and anti-Semitism online, which is notably spreading among young people.Macron also called for a Europe-wide effort to force internet platforms to remove content that feeds extremism. The latest official figures show that anti-Semitic violence increased 26 percent last year in France and that criminal damage to Jewish places of worship and burials increased 22 percent. Two attacks were particularly deadly. In 2012, three children and a teacher from a Jewish school were killed by Islamic extremist Mohammed Merah in Toulouse. In 2015, four customers of a Paris kosher supermarket were slain by another Islamic extremist, Amedy Coulibaly.Macron also waded carefully into a heated debate that has split French intellectual circles over whether to publish anti-Semitic pamphlets of a renowned writer.Gallimard, one of the largest, most influential and most prestigious French publishing houses, said in December it planned to republish for the first time since World War II a series of three fiercely anti-Semitic lampoons written between 1937 and 1941 by noted French writer Louis-Ferdinand Celine.Celine, who was convicted of being a wartime collaborator with France's Nazi occupiers before being granted amnesty, opposed reprinting the tracts before his death, which came in 1961.The writer is best known for "Journey to the End of the Night," a much-acclaimed 1932 first novel that is still frequently studied by French high school students.Controversy erupted in literary circles over the publication, between those who advocate total freedom of speech and those who warn against the dangers of such texts in the context of rising anti-Semitism."Celine was not a socialite anti-Semite, but a pro-Hitler anti-Semite," Marc Knobel, the CRIF's director of studies, told The Associated Press. "His pamphlets are appalling. They are crime-inducing. With them, Celine expressed his execration for the Jews, called for putting the Jews to death."Antoine Gallimard, president of the publishing house, recently decided to suspend publication, while insisting he hasn't given up on the project.Proponents of reprinting argue that the texts already are easily accessible on the internet and say that it is preferable the tracts be published with historical comments explaining their danger, revealing the darkest face of the writer.Macron said France doesn't have "moral, historic or memorial police," but added, "I don't think we need these pamphlets" to understand Celine. Also Wednesday, CRIF leader Francis Kalifat encouraged Macron to follow U.S. President Donald Trump's lead in recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital, but Macron called the move an "error" that hurt peace efforts.___Associated Press writer Angela Charlton in Paris contributed to this report.
France's Macron laments Trump's recognition of Jerusalem-[Associated Press]-YAHOONEWS-March 8, 2018
PARIS (AP) — French President Emmanuel Macron says U.S. President Donald Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital was an "error" and France has no plans to follow in his footsteps.Macron met Wednesday with France's leading Jewish group, which urged France to make a similar recognition. The French leader said he didn't think Trump has "helped with resolving the conflict" between Israelis and Palestinians. He called the U.S. move "a real error in this context."Macron said that if France did the same, "we would lose this status of honest broker, which is the only useful one for the region" — a status that the U.S. can no longer enjoy. The Palestinians claim part of Jerusalem for the capital of an eventual state and have rejected U.S. mediation in peace efforts.
Clashes, machete attack kill more than 20 in central Nigeria-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-March 8, 2018
BAUCHI, Nigeria (Reuters) - More than 20 people have died in clashes between herders and farmers in central Nigeria, police said, part of an outbreak of violence that has piled pressure on President Muhammadu Buhari less than a year before elections. Two herders went missing in the central state of Benue on Monday and one was later found dead, a state police spokesman said.In revenge, a group armed with machetes attacked people, including women and children, in the district of Okpokwu the same day, the spokesman said. Twenty-four people died in that violence, he added."Four suspects have so far been arrested in connection with the gruesome murder," the spokesman said. Some opposition politicians have accused Buhari of failing to take action against the herders because they are his ethnic and religious kin - an accusation his supporters dismiss. The herders are mostly Muslims from Buhari's Fulani ethnic group, while the majority of the farmers are Christians of other ethnicities. Many of the clashes between the communities, triggered by competition over dwindling arable land, have become part of a cycle of revenge attacks that shows little sign of abating. The presidency said Buhari would begin a tour of areas hit by the clashes, including Benue, on Monday.
