Francis: “It's a contradiction for a Christian to be anti-Semitic”
Bergoglio with the Chief Rabbi of Rome Riccardo Di Segni
A Jewish delegation visits Francis on the occasion of the 70th
anniversary of the deportation of Rome’s Jews. Chief Rabbi Di Segni
praises the Lampedusa recovery efforts
ANDREA TORNIELLI

“It’s a contradiction that a Christian is
anti-Semitic: His roots are Jewish,” said the Pope. “A Christian cannot
be anti-Semitic! Let Anti-Semitism be banished from the heart and life
of every man and every woman!” Pope Francis said this to members of
Rome’s Jewish community, whom he met today, to mark the 70th anniversary
of the deportation of the city’s Jewish population during the Nazi
occupation. The Pope recalled that “for many centuries … the
Jewish community and the Church of Rome have lived in our city, with a
history - as we well know - which was often transversed by
misunderstandings and even true grievances,” Pope Francis said.
“However, it is a story, that with the help of God, has for many decades
experienced the development of friendly and fraternal relations.”
“Naturally the Second Vatican Council reflections
on the Catholic side have contributed” to this change in mentality “but
the life and actions of wise and generous individuals on both sides have
also had an important part to play with their “courageous efforts in
creating new paths for understanding and dialogue”. “Paradoxically, the shared tragedy of the war taught us to walk alongside each other. In a few days we will commemorate the 70th anniversary of the deportation of Rome’s Jewish population,” Francis
added. It will be a chance to remember and pray for the victims and
their families. “It will also be an opportunity to keep vigilant so
that, under any pretext, any forms of intolerance and anti-Semitism in
Rome and the rest of the world not come back to life. I've said it other
times and I would like to repeat it now: It’s a contradiction that a
Christian is anti-Semitic: His roots are Jewish,” said the Pope. “A
Christian cannot be anti-Semitic! Let Anti-Semitism be banished from the
heart and life of every man and every woman!”Francis also reminded his audience of the efforts
made by Christians and the clergy, with Pius XII’s blessing, to help the
Jewish population. The Pope also said that “the anniversary offers a
chance to remember how the Christian community responded during this
“hour of darkness” to the needs of his brother in difficulty. We know
how many religious institutions, monasteries and Papal Basilicas,
interpreting the will of the Pope, opened their doors in a brotherly
welcome , and how many ordinary Christians offered what help they could
give, however big or small.”“The vast majority” of these Christians, Francis said, “were not
aware of the need to update the Christian understanding of Judaism, and
perhaps knew very little about the life of the Jewish community, But
they had the courage to do what at that time was the right thing: to
protect their brother, who was in danger. I would like to emphasize this
aspect, because if it is true that it is important, on both sides, to
study, in depth, theological reflections through dialogue, it is also
true that there is a dialogue of life, that of everyday experience,
which is no less important. Indeed, without this, without a real and
concrete culture of encounter, which leads to authentic relationships,
which exist without prejudice and suspicion, the engagement in the
intellectual field would serve little purpose.”
Finally, Francis pointed to some among the “many
things” that the two communities have in common: the Decalogue as a
solid foundation and source of life for our society which has become
disoriented as a result of an extreme pluralism of choices and
orientations. The Pope also sent the community a written message to commemorate the 70th
anniversary of the deportation of Rome’s Jews. The message contained an
appeal to the new generations not to let their existence become flat,
not to let themselves be influenced by ideologies, never to justify the
evils they come across, not let their guard down and continue fighting
against anti-Semitism and racism, whatever their background. In his opening greeting to the Pope, the Chief
Rabbi of Rome, Riccardo Di Segni, alluded to the Biblical story of
Noah’s Arc and the global flood, saying: “there is still something about
that story that torments us: out of the whole of humanity only one
family survives inside a boat, while everything else is destroyed by the
flood.” “But in the past few days we have seen the exact opposite
happening: we’ve seen people in a boat dying while the rest of humanity
survives, helpless and indifferent.” “Our history and our faith rebel
against this and with your strong presence which shares in this
rebellion, you have proven that we have common values to pass on to
humanity,” the Chief Rabbi continued.“It was a positive meeting,” Chief Rabbi Di Segni
told Vatican Insider. The Pope showed a “great willingness to listen and
a propositional attitude. In both our private and public meetings we
spoke about biblical exegesis, history and solidarity.”

Bergoglio gives Schultz a push: “Europe must live up to its responsibilities”
Francis with Martin Schulz
Today the Pope met with the President of the European Parliament
who invited Francis to Strasbourg. The two agreed that “the Lampedusa
scenario must never be repeated again”
GIACOMO GALEAZZI
vatican city
As the son of immigrants whose father had a lucky
escape from a sinking ship, Bergoglio sent out a firm message to Europe
in his meeting with the President of the European Parliament, Martin
Schultz, today. The Pope called on Europe to live up to its
responsibilities in order to prevent boat people tragedies like last
Thursday’s one at Lampedusa, which claimed the lives of 319 illegal
immigrants. The European Parliament is anxious to welcome a Pope of such
“extraordinary open-mindedness”. But Bergoglio is no fan of blown up
media campaigns unless he can see concrete results, so a papal visit to
Strasbourg would mean a crammed schedule with lots of topics to discuss.A hot topic up for discussion is the need for
greater European involvement in welcoming immigrants and in mediation
for peace in Syria and the Middle East. In a press statement, Martin
Schultz said that during his audience with Francis, “I spoke about the
urgent problems faced by the EU and I think it’s no surprise that our
conversation turned to Lampedusa and the immigration,” the President of
the EU Parliament said after the meeting. He underlined that “more
solidarity and a greater cooperation against despair and civil war” were
crucial. “The Pope’s messages in these first few months of his
pontificate encouraged me to bring him this message.” “Once again I
extended the European Parliament’s invitation to the Pope to come to
Strasbourg” and “I think my message was warmly received, so I am glad I
had the opportunity to extend our invitation to him,” Schultz told
journalists. The invitation coincides with an important anniversary:
“Twenty-five years ago, on this day, John Paul II addressed the plenary
of the European Parliament in Strasbourg. On behalf of the European
Parliament, I have extended an invitation to Pope Francis to address the
plenary."Widening the scope of legal immigration and
creating more human corridors for refugees coming to Europe as well as
temporary permits for refugees are measures Europe could adopt to deal
with the immigration emergency after the Lampedusa boat tragedy, Schultz
underlined. The subject of immigration took up much of this morning’s
half-hour meeting with the Pope, who asked for greater attention to be
paid to the issues linked to this phenomenon. It is an issue that Europe
as a whole needs to deal with urgently but responsibility also lies
with the single States. This morning Francis and the President of the
European Parliament leafed through a photo album of John Paul II’s visit
to the Parliament in Strasbourg 25 years ago. Schultz asked the Pope to
follow in the footsteps of his predecessor and visit the European
Parliament. The president gave the Pope a book of Sunday
prayers and a book on Aachen Cathedral. Francis reciprocated with a
Vatican Museum pen featuring one of the columns from Bernini’s
“baldacchino” (canopy) which surmounts the Confession altar. Schultz was
accompanied by the mayor of Aachen, the local newspaper’s
editor-in-chief and the local parish priest. The Vatican’s spokesman,
Fr. Federico Lombardi, said some of the issues covered during the
meeting included “poverty, the emigration phenomenon and youth
unemployment,”The Pope showed his appreciation for the
invitation to Strasbourg. “The President’s invitation was heartfelt and
will receive the Pope’s careful consideration,” Fr. Lombardi underlined.
So the Pope has not yet taken Schultz up on his invitation and there
was no mention of any potential dates. If a visit does take place, it
will only be to the European institutions and not to the Diocese of
Strasbourg, which John Paul II did visit back in 1998, the Curia pointed
out.

Francis: “The devil exists, let’s not confuse it with a mental illness”
Pope Francis
In this morning’s homily for the daily mass in St. Martha’s House, Francis said “Let us not do business with the devil”
ANDREA TORNIELLI
vatican city
Pope Francis spoke again of the devil at today’s
mass in St. Martha’s House, inviting faithful to take the Scriptures
that mention the devil, seriously. The text Francis commented on today
was a passage from Luke’s Gospel, which says that Jesus casts out demons
but is not understood by the people.“There are some priests who, when they read this
Gospel passage, this and others say: ‘But, Jesus healed a person with a
mental illness’. They do not read this, no? It is true that at that
time, they could confuse epilepsy with demonic possession; but it is
also true that there was the devil! And we do not have the right to
simplify the matter, as if to say: ‘All of these (people) were not
possessed; they were mentally ill’. No! The presence of the devil is on
the first page of the Bible, and the Bible ends as well with the
presence of the devil, with the victory of God over the devil,” Francis
said.Francis’ call to faithful not to downplay or
confuse the devil’s action with mental illnesses was particularly
striking. Francis asked Christians not to be naïve when faced with the
temptation of finding explanations “to diminish the power of the Lord.”
“There is always the temptation to want to diminish the figure of Jesus,
as if he were “a healer at most” and so as not to take him “so
seriously”. This temptation still exists today. The Pope then outlined three ways of fighting
evil: “Do not confuse the truth. Jesus fights the devil: first
criterion. Second criterion: he who is not with Jesus is against Jesus.
There are no attitudes in the middle. Third criterion: vigilance over
our hearts because the devil is astute. He is never cast out forever. It
will only be so on the last day.”“Vigilance,” Francis said, “because his strategy
is this: ‘You became Christian. Advance in your faith. I will leave you.
I will leave you tranquil. But then when you are used to not being so
watchful and you feel secure, I will come back’. The Gospel today begins
with the devil being cast out and ends with the devil coming back! St.
Peter would say: ‘It is like a fierce lion that circles us’. It is like
that.”“‘But, Father, you a little ancient. You are
frightening us with these things…’ No, not me! It is the Gospel! And
these are not lies: it is the Word of the Lord! Let us ask the Lord for
the grace to take these things seriously. He came to fight for our
salvation. He won against the devil! Please, let us not do business with
the devil! He seeks to return home, to take possession of us… Do not relativize; be vigilant! And always with Jesus!.

Athens (AFP) - Greece and Turkey, which share a history
marred by bitter territorial disputes and Christian-Muslim feuds, are at
loggerheads once again over religion. The latest row erupted
after Greece flatly rejected the idea of reviving two Muslim mosques in
Athens in return for the reopening of an Orthodox clergy school in
Turkey.Mosques have been a thorny issue for a long time in
Greece, where the population is predominantly Greek Orthodox. Athens is
one of the few European capitals without an official mosque.
The
Halki seminary has also been a subject of controversy. The Orthodox
clergy used to train in the school located on an island off Istanbul but
it was closed in 1971, after Turkey fell out with Greece over Cyprus.
Turkey,
a country where Muslims make up 99 percent of the population, recently
decided to give back to the seminary lands that had been seized in 1943,
but there was no talk of reopening."While we return something,
we have the right to expect the return of other things," said Turkish
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who said he wanted two mosques
revived in exchange for the seminary."Greece's position on the
subject (the re-opening of the seminary) is clear, (it is) in accordance
with international law and has been expressed on numerous occasions,"
Greek Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos said earlier this week.Any
further public discussion on the matter would be "counter productive,"
Venizelos said when asked to comment on Erdogan's suggestion.Erdogan
also wants Greece's Muslims to be able to elect their own Mufti
(religious leader), something that the Greek government is currently in
charge of.Greece is home to around 500,000 Muslims -- many of
them undocumented migrants -- including a community of over 100,000
Greek citizens of Turkish origin in the country's northeast.A
staunchly Orthodox state with bitter memories of nearly four centuries
of Ottoman Turkish rule, Greece currently offers sanctioned Muslim
religious sites only near its northeastern border with Turkey. The issue of mosques in Greece started popping up shortly after 2000, as the 2004 Athens Olympics were looming up.With
an increasing number of migrants from Pakistan and other Muslim
countries having recently found their way to the Greek capital, the
matter has become more pressing and in 2011 the government approved the
construction of a mosque in Athens. But there were no immediate
signs of interest in the project, in view of the Greek Church's
reluctance, objections by local residents and protests by far-right
activists including neo-Nazi party Golden Dawn.In September, the
ministry of infrastructure launched a fourth call for offers for this
project which will cost some one million euros ($1.4 million).

Danon: 'Need to Weigh Up Future of Negotiations'
In light of earlier incidents, Jordan Valley attack creates a "disturbing picture," says Deputy Defense Minister Danny Danon.-By Kochava Rozenbaum-First Publish: 10/11/2013, 12:27 PM-Israelnationalnews
Deputy Defense Minister Danny Danon-Flash 90
Although Friday's fatal attack in the Jordan Valley community of
Brosh is unrelated to previous recent acts of terrorism, together they
form a disturbing
picture, according to Deputy Defense Minister Danny Danon.
Danon told interviewers on Israeli
radio network Reshet Bet that
there was room to weigh up whether or not to continue negotiations with
the Palestinian Authority following the attacks, and the incitement he
said lay behind them.According to the Deputy Defense Minister, "forces trying to
undermine" Mahmoud Abbas' leadership could also have been behind the
attack."Israel expects the Palestinian Authority to react and take actions, but at
the moment we are not seeing this," Danon lamented. Many political figures have rejected claims that the recent spate of
terror attacks is not the responsibility of the Palestinian Authority
(PA) and its Chaiman, Mahmoud Abbas.Following the
attack in Psagot last week, which
saw a nine-year old Israeli girl shot in the neck at close
range, Israeli Housing Minister Uri Ariel said: “the same 'Abu' is not
denouncing and the same 'Mazen' is not taking action to arrest
terrorists but only making gestures.” Abu Mazen is another name for the
PA Chairman.
Minister Uri Ariel also said that
the current violence is a problem that requires that the government
“stop, think anew, reach conclusions and see how we continue.”Also
following Thursday night's attack, Judea and Samaria (Yesha) Council
Chairman and Head of the Binyamin Regional Council Avi Ro'eh said that
the continued negotiations with the Palestinian Authority had only
led to an increase in terror attacks, adding that they gave the impression of weakness and sent out the wrong
message.

15 For thus saith the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel; In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength: and ye would not.

Houses of prayer in the Holy City
Some
have been desecrated, some have been destroyed, and some have been
lovingly restored, but the stories of Jerusalem’s synagogues live on
Israel’s
War of Independence ended with Jerusalem divided in two — and the Old
City in Jordanian hands. Unfortunately, during the course of the war,
two of the Old City’s magnificent and historic synagogues were razed to
the ground by the Jordanian Legion. When the Six Day War of 1967
reunited the Holy City, the Jewish Quarter returned to Israel.
Restorations began on a number of important sites, including several
sanctuaries that had been demolished, desecrated or taken away by the
Muslim authorities over the centuries. Here are a few of their stories:
Four Sephardic Synagogues
Rabbi Yochanan Ben-Zakkai was a first century
sage and a member of the Sanhedrin (the highest Jewish court and council
in ancient times) who kept Jewish learning alive after the fall of the
Second Temple. In the 16th century, a sanctuary in Jerusalem
was named after the famous rabbi, which was joined, over the next 200
years, by three adjoining houses of worship. Called the Four Sephardic
Synagogues, that complex is located on the edge of the Jewish Quarter in
Jerusalem’s Old City and serves as a major spiritual, educational, and
financial center for Sephardic Jews. Indeed, it is here that the Chief
Rabbi of the Sephardic community has been anointed since 1893 (except
during the years of Jerusalem’s division). The largest of the four
chambers is the Ben-Zakkai Synagogue on which site, according to
tradition, the revered rabbi taught Bible. A smaller sanctuary next
door, named for Elijah the prophet, has been the subject of numerous
stories. My favorite is the tale about the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur)
when only nine Jews showed up for prayers (services can’t start without
ten). Suddenly a stranger appeared and the worshipers happily began to
pray. Immediately after the service, the stranger vanished. It was
obvious to the others that the tenth addition had been Elijah — who
saves the day on all kinds of different occasions.Kahal Zion, also known as the Middle Synagogue, is the smallest of the four sanctuaries. On
the wall are framed computer-produced memorials. These replace stone
memorials which were destroyed by the Jordanians during and after the
War of Independence. Built by immigrant Jews from Istanbul, and today
used by Jews from Kurdistan as well, the fourth chamber is called the
Istanbuli Synagogue. This 18th-century sanctuary boasts an extraordinary
pulpit with exquisite ornamentation; its gold-plated wooden ark has
been lovingly restored. In 1948, this place of worship was a last
refuge for the Jews of the Old City, who were forced to surrender when
the soldiers of the Arab Legion closed in on them. Nineteen years later,
when Jewish soldiers re-entered the synagogue complex, they found that
the Jordanians had turned the historic house of worship into a stable.
Since that time the synagogue has been completely restored.
Tiferet Yisrael
When completed in 1872, Tiferet Yisrael was
three stories high and its dome was one of the tallest spots in the Old
City. It was built by followers of a religious movement founded in the
18th century, when Judaism was sometimes considered the sole
domain of scholars and community leaders. The new movement, called
Hasidism, made Judaism accessible and attractive to all, teaching that
even an ignorant person could find grace in the eyes of God if he had a
pure heart and prayed with devotion.
Tiferet Yisrael (photo credit: Shmuel Bar-Am)
In 1948, Tiferet Yisrael became an important
military position and lookout point for Jewish defenders, and the battle
over the building led to its destruction. Already badly damaged by
heavy shelling, Tiferet Yisrael was completely demolished by Jordanian
sappers in the days following the capitulation of the Jewish Quarter.
Dome and walls collapsed and covered the building’s foundations. While
some of its splendid features can still be seen in the ruins, this is
the one early synagogue that has not been restored.
The Ramban Synagogue
Established in 1267, this was the very first
synagogue to be built in the Jewish Quarter. Its founder was a
well-known Spanish biblical commentator, Rabbi Moshe Ben-Nahman
(1194-1270). His name is abbreviated in Hebrew as the famous acronym:
the Ramban and he is also known as Nahmanides.
Commander Abdullah A-Tal decided
to completely destroy Jewish morale and thus to purge the city of Jews
once and for all. He gave an order — and the synagogue was blown to bits
Rabbi Moshe Ben-Nahman immigrated to the land
of Israel after participating in a debate on religion with the royalty
of Spain. Having won the debate, he was then forced to leave the
country. Spain’s loss was Israel’s gain. Rabbi Ben-Nahman wasted no time
in building a synagogue, traditionally on this site, utilizing marble
pillars and a lovely dome from an abandoned edifice in its construction.
Since the synagogue was a religious center for all of the Jewish groups
in the city, the Jewish Quarter developed around it. In 1586, the
Turkish governor of Jerusalem kicked the Jews out of their synagogue and
Muslims began using the building as a storeroom for a neighboring
mosque. The beautiful interior of the synagogue, reconstructed after the
reunification of Jerusalem and returned to use after almost four
centuries of neglect, contains one of its former columns. The pillar
bears the Hebrew inscription “Avraham, Yitzhak, Ya’akov” (Abraham, Isaac
and Jacob).
The Hurva Synagogue
Several decades ago, a naked arch was erected
above a pile of rubble in the Old City’s Jewish Quarter. It quickly
became a Jerusalem landmark, seen on countless postcards and
photographs. Considered by many to be a symbol of wanton destruction –
and to others the promise of future redemption – the arch has completely
disappeared. It was replaced by the complete restoration of the
exquisite Hurva Synagogue, which stood on this site before its
destruction by the Jordanian Legion in 1948.

The first synagogue to be erected on this spot
was built in 1705 by Ashkenazi followers of Rabbi Yehuda HaHasid. Five
years earlier, the rabbi and his disciples had come to Jerusalem from
eastern Europe to hasten the coming of the Messiah. Although the rabbi
passed away soon after his arrival, his followers were desperate for a
synagogue. Since money was scarce, they were forced to borrow heavily
from the local Muslim populace in order to complete its construction. A
few decades later, when the Jews were unable to pay back the loans,
Muslim rioters demolished the synagogue and expelled the Ashkenazi
community from Jerusalem. In 1836, a small place of Ashkenazi worship
called Menachem Zion was constructed at the site; a house of study,
Sha’arei Zion, was added in 1856. But the very large center for
Ashkenazi Jews that would stand here eventually was completed only in
1864, with the help of the philanthropic Rothschild family. Officially
named Beit Ya’akov, after the Baron James (Ya’akov in Hebrew) de
Rothschild, it continued to be known as the Hurva (“Ruin”) of Rabbi
Yehuda HaHasid.

A splendid edifice, Beit Ya’akov was the
tallest structure in the Jewish Quarter, with lovely interior wall
decorations and a stunning Holy Ark from Russia. The synagogue became
the center of Jewish life in Jerusalem, so important that, during the
War of Independence, defenders of the Jewish Quarter kept the fighting
away from the site. On May 27th, 1948, when the Jewish Quarter was under
siege and its buildings devastated, Commander Abdullah A-Tal decided to
completely destroy Jewish morale and thus to purge the city of Jews
once and for all. He gave an order — and the synagogue was blown to
bits. On the very next day, the brave defenders of the Jewish Quarter
surrendered. But times have changed. And today, risen from the ashes,
the Hurva Synagogue once again towers over the Jewish Quarter.

THE FIRST JUDGEMENT OF THE EARTH STARTED WITH WATER-IT ONLY MAKES SENSE THE LAST GENERATION WILL BE HAVING FLOODING
GENESIS 7:6-12
6 And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.
7 And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.
8 Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth,
9 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.
10 And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.
11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
12 And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.

ICHAPURAM/BHUBANESWAR, India (Reuters) - Rain and wind lashed India's
east coast on Saturday, forcing about 450,000 people to flee to shelters
as one of the country's largest cyclones closed in, threatening to cut a
swathe of devastation through farmland and fishing hamlets.Filling most of the Bay of Bengal, Cyclone Phailin was about 90 km (124
miles) off the coast by late afternoon and was expected to strike the
coast by nightfall with winds of between 210 kph (130 mph) and 220 kph
(137 mph). The storm was expected to affect 12 million people,
most of them in the densely populated states of Odisha and Andhra
Pradesh, weather and disaster management officials said.Even
before landfall, coconut trees in villages along the coast were bent and
broken in the gusting wind. Electrical poles were brought down and
roads were littered with debris.
In the first reported deaths, two people were killed by falling trees while a third when the walls of her mud house collapsed.Terrified children clung to their mothers as they sought shelter. Most
towns along the coast were deserted but there were still some people
trying to flee. Some people took refuge in temples, others crammed into three-wheel auto-rickshaws and headed inland."This is one of the largest evacuations undertaken in India," said
Shashidhar Reddy, vice chairman of the National Disaster Management
Authority, who estimated that more than 440,000 people had fled from
their homes. The size of the storm made extensive damage to
property more likely, he told reporters in New Delhi. "Our priority is
to minimize loss of life."Phailin is expected to bring a 3.4-m (11-foot) surge in sea levels when it hits the coast between 1230 GMT and 1430 GMT.
EXTENSIVE DAMAGE
The weather department warned of extensive damage to mud houses, major
disruption of power and communication lines, and the flooding of rail
tracks and roads. Flying debris is another threat."In a storm of
this magnitude there is the potential for widespread damage to crops
and livestock in the low-lying coastal areas and houses completely wiped
away," said Kunal Shah, the head of the aid group World Vision's
emergency response team in India."While we are praying this storm loses intensity, we're also preparing."
London-based Tropical Storm Risk classed the storm in Category 5 - the
strongest such rating. The U.S. Navy's weather service said wind at sea
was gusting at 314 kph. Many of the people along the coast are subsistence fishermen and farmers, who live in mud-and-brick or thatched huts.In 1999, a typhoon battered the same region, killing 10,000 people.India's disaster preparations have improved significantly since then
and aid workers praised precautions for Phailin such as early warnings,
stocking of rations in shelters and evacuations."A lot has been
learnt since 1999 and my guess is that while there could be extensive
damage to property and crops, the death toll will be much less," said G.
Padmanabhan, emergency analyst at the U.N. Development Programme. But despite all the warnings, some people refused to leave their homes."I have a small child, so I thought, how will I leave?" asked Achamma,
25, as she clutched on to her boy in Donkuru, a fishing village in
Andhra Pradesh, as waves crashed on to a nearby beach.Police
said a rescue had been launched for 18 fishermen stranded at sea off
Paradip, a major port in Odisha, after their trawler ran out of fuel.Paradip halted cargo operations on Friday. All vessels were ordered to
leave the port, which handles coal, crude oil and iron ore. An oil
tanker holding about 2 million barrels of oil, worth $220 million, was
also moved, an oil company source said. But the storm was not
expected to hit India's largest gas field, the D6 natural gas block in
the Cauvery Basin further down the east coast, field operator Reliance
Industries said.

31 in Fla. Infected by Bacteria in Salt Water
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. October 11, 2013 (AP)
By TAMARA LUSH Associated Press-yahoonews
Patty Konietzky thought the small purple lesion on her husband's ankle
was a spider bite. But when the lesion quickly spread across his body
like a constellation, she knew something wasn't right. After a trip to the hospital and a day and a half later, Konietzky's 59-year-old husband was dead. The diagnosis: vibrio vulnificus (vih-BREE'-oh VUHL'-nihf-ih-kus), an
infection caused by a bacterium found in warm salt water. It's in the
same family of bacterium that causes cholera. So far this year, 31
people across Florida have been infected by the severe strain of vibrio,
and 10 have died."I thought the doctors would treat him with antibiotics and we'd go
home," said Konietzky, who lives in Palm Coast, Fla. "Never in a million
years it crossed my mind that this is where I'd be today."State health officials say there are two ways to contract the disease:
by eating raw, tainted shellfish — usually oysters — or when an open
wound comes in contact with bacteria in warm seawater. In Mobile, Ala., this week health department officials said two men with
underlying health conditions were diagnosed with vibrio vulnificus in
recent weeks. One of the men died in September and the other is
hospitalized. Both men were tending to crab traps when they came into
contact with seawater. While such occurrences could potentially concern officials in states
with hundreds of miles of coastline and economies largely dependent on
ocean-related tourism, experts say the bacteria is nothing most people
should worry about. Vibrio bacteria exist normally in salt water and
generally only affect people with compromised immune systems, they say.
Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain. If the bacteria
get into the bloodstream, they provoke symptoms including fever and
chills, decreased blood pressure and blistering skin wounds. But there's no need to stop swimming in the Gulf of Mexico, says Diane
Holm, a spokeswoman for the state health department in Lee County, which
has had a handful of cases that included one fatality this year."This is nothing abnormal," she said. "We don't believe there is any
greater risk for someone to swim in the Gulf today than there was
yesterday or 10 years ago."There have been reports this year in Gulf states of other waterborne
illnesses, but they are rare. In fresh water, the Naegleria fowleri
amoeba usually feeds on bacteria in the sediment of warm lakes and
rivers. If it gets high up in the nose, it can get into the brain. Cases
have been reported in Louisiana, Arkansas and in Florida, including the
August death of a boy in the southwestern part of the state who
contracted the amoeba while knee boarding in a water-filled ditch.Dr. James Oliver, a professor of biology at the University of North
Carolina in Charlotte, has studied vibrio vulnificus for decades. He
said that while Florida has the most cases of vibrio infection due to
the warm ocean water that surrounds the state, the bacteria is found
worldwide, generally in estuaries and near the coast."It's normal flora in the water," he said. "It belongs there."The vast majority of people who are exposed to the bacteria don't get
sick, he said. A few people become ill but recover. Only a fraction of
people are violently ill and fewer still die; Oliver said many of those
people ingest tainted, raw shellfish.
Oliver and Florida Department of Health officials say people shouldn't
be afraid of going into Florida's waters, but that those with suppressed
immune systems, such as people who have cancer, diabetes or cirrhosis
of the liver, should be aware of the potential hazards of vibrio
vulnificus, especially if they have an open wound.Holm said nine people died from vibrio vulnificus in Florida in 2012,
and 13 in 2011, so this year's statistics aren't alarming. What's
different, she said, was that victims' families are speaking to the news
media about the danger.Konietzky watched as her husband Henry "Butch" Konietzky died on Sept.
23. She said she feels it's her mission to let others know about the
potential risks. Next week, she and her husband's adult daughter are
scheduled to appear on "The Doctors" television program to discuss the
disease."We knew nothing about this bacteria," she said. Never mind that both
she and her husband grew up in Florida and have spent their lives
fishing and participating in other water activities. The couple had gone crabbing on the Halifax River near Ormond Beach on
Sept. 21, she said. Her husband first noticed the ankle lesion in the
middle of that night. He didn't wake his wife, but in the morning, told
her that it felt like his skin was burning near the lesion. Patty
Konietzky took a photo of it and hours later, when her husband said he
was in pain and the lesions had spread, they went to the emergency room.Konietzky said her husband didn't have any health problems or open
wounds that she knew of, and when doctors told her that he had an
infection in his bloodstream, she didn't think it was too serious.
Within hours, her husband's skin turned purple and it "looked like he
had been beaten with a baseball bat."Nearly 62 hours after he was in the water, Butch Konietzky died. His
wife notes that she, too, was in the same water — yet wasn't infected."To walk around in the water and doing the things we did, you didn't give it any thought," she said.Konietzky said her husband wouldn't want her — or anyone else — to stop
fishing or enjoying outdoor activities because of a fear of the
bacteria. Nonetheless, she wants people to be aware of the risk and is
pushing her local county commission to post signs warning folks about
the bacteria."I'm not going to be afraid of it," she said. "I have to personally put
some meaning on the loss of my husband. And speaking out is all I can
do."————————

HOSEA 4:1-3
1 Hear the word of the LORD, ye children of Israel: for the LORD hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land,(EARTH) because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land.
2 By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood.
3 Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein shall languish, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away.
ZEPHANIAH 1:2-3
2 I will utterly consume all things from off the land, saith the LORD.
3 I will consume man and beast; I will consume the fowls of the heaven, and the fishes of the sea, and the stumblingblocks with the wicked; and I will cut off man from off the land, saith the LORD.

Florida wildlife officials have had little success reducing the burgeoning local populations of
Burmese pythons, but they sure aren’t giving up any time soon. After myriad solutions have proved largely ineffective against the
invasive species, the state is—once again—deploying a new weapon: Traps
engineered specifically for pythons. Two separate triggers need to be tripped simultaneously for the
five-foot long, galvanized steel device to close. Officials said this
fail-safe feature should keep the trap from closing on native snakes like the shorter eastern diamondback rattlesnake or the water moccasin. In the next few months, officials at the Gainesville field station
for the National Wildlife Research Center will test the device in an
enclosure housing five pythons. To lure the snakes, officials will bait
the traps with scents of the snakes’ prey—the state’s small mammals. If
the devices prove effective, the plan is to then move them to the wild
sometime next year. “There’s still more to be learned, there’s still
more to be tested,” said John Humphrey, a biologist at the NWRC.The Everglades has become an immense breeding ground for the
Burmese python,
with an estimated 150,000 of the slithering giants thriving in the warm
waters, lush swamplands, and saw grasses that dominate the peninsula’s
southern reach.“There’s nothing stopping them, the native wildlife are in trouble,”
said Kenneth Krysko, of the Florida Museum of Natural History,
told the AP
last year when a 17-foot, 7-inch specimen was caught and killed. That
record-setter has since been eclipsed by a 19-foot, 128-pound specimen,
killed in May.Native to South Asia, the snakes first came to Florida in the 1980s
as part of the exotic pet trade. The infestation began, officials
surmise, when pets were released into the wild, either intentionally or
accident when they may have slithered out of Miami-area pet stores after
Hurricane Andrew ransacked the city in 1992.In early 2012, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service banned the
"importation and interstate transportation" of African rock pythons,
Burmese pythons, and the yellow anaconda. But people in the United
States and Canada can still own the snakes with special permits.
Voracious, unscrupulous eaters, the snakes are decimating the
state’s small mammals. A January 2012 study, published in the journal
Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, estimated
that Florida’s raccoon population had fallen 99.3 percent, opossum by
98.9 percent, and bobcat by 87.5 percent between 2003 and 2011.State officials have since gotten quite creative in their attempt to exterminate the unwanted visitors. They’ve enlisted the help of python-sniffing dogs,
held python-hunting contests, and even supported turning the critters
into handbags.By and large, these silver bullets have missed the mark. Perhaps the new python trap will have better aim. Stay tuned.

American Scientists Warn Against Loose Missiles in Syria
Syria's

The Syrian government's shoulder-fired
anti-aircraft missiles and launchers could imperil civil aviation if
they fall into the hands of terror groups, an independent report
examining the global proliferation of portable missiles says. The report released Friday by the Federation of American Scientists (FAS) and reported on by the Associated Press,
warns that some opposition factions inside Syria are already wielding
small numbers of anti-aircraft systems in combat against Syrian
government forces.Citing video and photo evidence from
opposition forces, media and official accounts, the FAS study says some
portable launchers and missiles have been seized by opposition forces
during battles with Syrian troops, while others have been smuggled in to
rebel fighters from neighboring countries.FAS is a prominent Washington group that focuses on issues of science and security. The 88-page report warns about man-portable
air-defense systems, also known as MANPADS, in the arsenal of Syrian
President Bashar Al-Assad's government. U.S. officials have estimated
the Syrian government has as many as 20,000 MANPADS, compact missile
launchers with the range and explosive power to attack low-flying planes
and helicopters. It is unclear how many similar weapons might have been smuggled into Syria by rebels and sympathizers to fight Assad.Syria's anti-aircraft missile inventory is
comparable in size to that amassed by Libyan forces before the 2011
ouster of Muammar Qaddafi. The FAS study cites the widespread looting of
anti-aircraft weapons that occurred after Qaddafi’s fall and the mass
ransacking of Iraqi weapons depots after the U.S. invasion in 2003 as
evidence that Syria's missiles are equally vulnerable. The report said it was unclear whether any have been smuggled out of Libya.
"Should Syria go the way of Libya and Iraq,
the international community could be confronted with the loss of
government control over thousands of additional MANPADS, some of which
are significantly more sophisticated than most of the MANPADS looted
from depots in Libya," wrote the study's author, Matthew Schroeder,
director of the FAS' Arms Sales Monitoring Project. Both militant and moderate opposition forces
have repeatedly urged Western and Mideast nations to supply them with
portable anti-aircraft systems capable of downing Syrian aircraft used
in bombing runs at rebel and civilian targets. The U.S.
has so far balked at providing missiles, worried that some could end up with terrorist groups such as the Al-Nusra Front which has
pledged allegiance to Al-Qaeda.Verifying the authenticity of videos and
photos depicting the missiles in Syria has been difficult, but Schroeder
said that a "broad array of sources," which include media eyewitness
accounts of the use of missiles, point to the availability and
occasional use of anti-aircraft weapons in Syria. Many of the portable launchers displayed by Syrian rebel groups on the Internet, Schroeder said, appear to be decades-old
models such as Russian-made SA-7s — similar to ones found in Libya after Qaddafi’s ouster.Unlike Libya, Syria's military has a larger supply of newer and longer-range models
supplied from Russia, Schroeder said, and as a result, Syrian rebels
also appear to have seized some new-model Russian missile launchers. The report was released the same day that Human Rights
Watch (HRW) reported that groups of Syrian rebel forces
executed at least 190 civilians and seized over 200 as hostages during a military offensive on August 4.According to the report, a majority of the
massacres took place in the city of Latakia, predominantly inhabited by
members of Bashar Al-Assad's minority Alawite sect.Al-Nusra and other jihadist rebel groups
vowed revenge strikes against villages from the Alawite community over a
chemical weapons attack in Damascus on August 21.Members of Al-Nusra and other rebel groups have committed atrocities during the Syrian civil war, including
publicly beheading a Catholic priest who was accused of collaborating with Bashar Al-Assad’s regime.

Seoul (AFP) - North Korea on Saturday issued a fresh warning
of an "all-out war", urging the United States to stop military drills
and what it described as "nuclear blackmail".In a thinly veiled
threat to strike the United States, the North's National Defence
Commission (NDC), chaired by leader Kim Jong-Un, said the US government
must withdraw its policy of hostility against the North if it wants
peace on both the Korean peninsula and the "US mainland"."(The
United States) must bear it in mind that reckless provocative acts would
meet our retaliatory strikes and lead to an all-out war of justice for a
final showdown with the United States," a spokesman of the NDC was
quoted as saying in a statement carried by Pyongyang's Korean Central
News Agency."We emphasize again that the United States must
withdraw various measures aimed to isolate and strangulate us. Dependent
upon this are... peace and security, not only on the Korean peninsula
but the US mainland as well."The comments come after a two-day
joint naval drill between Japan, South Korea and the US, which included
an American nuclear aircraft carrier, sparked a series of angry
responses and threats from Pyongyang.On
Friday the North slammed a naval drill by US, South Korean and Japanese
warships as a "serious military provocation" and vowed to "bury in the
sea" the American carrier taking part in the exercise. The latest
bellicose statement from the NDC demanded that the US lift sanctions
against the North, stop the "constant nuclear blackmails" and various
war drills. It rejected as "intolerable contempt" a US demand that
it should show tangible commitment towards abandoning its nuclear
programmes if it wants substantive talks with the United States."The
denuclearization of the Korean peninsula is an inalterable policy goal
of the DPRK government," it said, but added that getting rid of such
weapons should also include a total removal of US nuclear threats
against the North. The US and South Korea have long demanded that
Pyongyang show tangible commitment to ending its nuclear weapons
programme before the six-party talks, which have been stalled for
several years, can resume. The North has said for years it wants
denuclearisation of the whole Korean peninsula and that it is developing
a nuclear arsenal to protect itself from the US military, which
occasionally sends nuclear-powered warships and aircraft capable of
carrying atomic weapons. In February the North carried out its
third underground nuclear test in defiance of UN Security Council
resolutions, sending tensions soaring and raising fears of possible
conflict. It also launched a rocket in December that Washington said was
a disguised ballistic missile test.As well as the two Koreas, China and the US the six-party talks also involve Russia and Japan.

On
top of its epic struggle to understand the First Amendment, the Council
on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has now shown that it apparently
doesn’t understand elementary trespassing law.On October 1, Samantha L. Bowden,
CAIR’s communication and outreach director in Florida,
drove about 80 miles from Tampa, Fla. to Orlando, Fla. to “stalk”
University of Central Florida (UCF) professor Jonathan Matusitz by
impermissibly sitting in one of his scheduled classes,
according to the website Family Security Matters.
“As I started teaching my class, I noticed that a female stranger was
sitting at the back of the classroom. That person never asked me if she
could enter my class and sit in the back of the classroom,” Matusitz
explained, apparently in a police report.“When I approached her, that person introduced herself as Samantha.
Because Samantha is not one of my students, I asked her to leave. In the
beginning, she was insisting to stay in my class. I had to ask her a
few times before she finally left.”Matusitz said he realized that Bowden works for CAIR not long after she finally left.“She is based in Tampa,” the professor added. “She is not a UCF student and never was a UCF student.”
A profile by SaintPetersBlog notes
that Bowden is a registered Democrat who spent time volunteering with
Rock the Vote and was a “prominent Occupy activist.” She majored in
international affairs and geography at the University of South Florida.
One day, she hopes to visit the Middle East.Florida law prohibits trespassing
on the campuses of state universities. A specific UCF regulation
prohibits trespassing and loitering.
“Only students registered for a class may be in attendance in
instructional areas unless permission of the instructor is given,” it
reads.CAIR has quite a history of trying to intimidate Matusitz, a tenured
communications professor. The Muslim civil liberties group doesn’t like
Matusitz’s argument linking Muslim culture to radical Islamic terrorism. In August, CAIR asked government officials in Brevard County, Fla. to
deny the use of a county-owned meeting room to a group hosting a speech
by Matusitz. CAIR called the group, ACT! for America, “an anti-Muslim
hate group.”
(RELATED: CAIR tries to ban professor’s speech on ‘The Islamic Threat to America’) ACT! for America is a conservative organization that bills itself as standing athwart the threat posed by radical Islam.
CAIR representatives
told the Orlando Sentinel that an exception to the First Amendment should be made for Matusitz’s speech.“This individual makes statements to incite violence against the
Muslim community, so I think that the line has been crossed,” explained
Hassan Shibly, a lawyer and executive director of CAIR of Tampa. “ACT!
is an extremist group no different than the KKK. And if the KKK wanted
to use that room, there would be a protest.”Doug “Ibrahim” Hooper, CAIR’s national communications director, piped up, too.
“It creates the perception of endorsement and approval by the Brevard County government of this group’s hateful views,” he said.
According to his
faculty webpage, Matusitz has a doctorate from the University of
Oklahoma. He claims 95 academic publications and more than 100
conference presentations. Also, in 2010, he taught at a NATO-affiliated
military base in Belgium.
