Michael Cohen, Donald Trump’s former lawyer and fixer, said Friday he is considering running for a seat in US Congress as a Democrat.“I am interested and there’s a multitude of folks encouraging me to run,” Cohen told the Semafor news outlet.Cohen, who said he lives on Manhattan’s East Side, could potentially launch a primary challenge against the incumbent of New York’s 12th congressional district, Representative Jerry Nadler. The veteran Democrat has served in the House of Representatives since 1992 and as the ranking member on the House Judiciary Committee since 2019.Nadler faced a challenge for his seat ahead of the 2022 midterm election after redistricting pitted him against long-time colleague Carolyn Maloney.Cohen pleaded guilty in 2018 to multiple charges, admitting that he lied to Congress, violated campaign finance laws through excessive political contributions, lied to multiple banks to obtain financing and evaded income taxes by failing to report more than $4 million in income. He was sentenced to three years in prison, although he served nearly two-thirds of it at home, released after the COVID-19 outbreak overwhelmed the nation’s prisons.The campaign finance charges came after he helped arrange payouts during the 2016 presidential race to keep the porn actor Stormy Daniels and model Karen McDougal from publicly claiming extramarital affairs with Trump. BOSTON (JTA) — In 1725, Abraham de Oliveyra was officially registered as a silversmith in London — the first Jew known to be given a license to practice the trade in the city.Jews had been let back into England just 70 years beforehand following an expulsion centuries earlier, and Oliveyra’s registration established him as a prolific maker of silver Judaica for the city’s synagogues.Now, nearly 300 years later, Oliveyra’s work will go on view in American museums for the first time. A pair of Torah ornaments made by the 18th-century craftsman have been bought jointly by Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts and New York City’s Jewish Museum.“The fact that Oliveyra is the earliest known Jewish silversmith active in England is quite monumental,” Abigail Rapoport, the Jewish Museum’s curator of Judaica, told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency. The ornaments, she said, are a “masterpiece of historical Judaica.”The pair of ornaments are known as finials, or “rimonim” in Hebrew, and sit on top of the two wooden staves of a Torah scroll when it is not being read. Made in 1729 of partially gilded silver, the finials feature tiers of bells surrounding three flattened spheres that showcase Oliveyra’s distinctive openwork, or design made by creating patterns of holes or piercings in the precious metal.Oliveyra is also known for his use of the shell motif, a hallmark of the era’s nature-inspired Rococo style. While they were of their time, Oliveyra’s design of the gilded rimonim is a clear reminder of the finials’ Jewish context, in that it alludes to the royal status Jews traditionally confer on the Torah, Rapoport said.The rimonim are one of only 11 known pairs by Oliveyra. The only other rimonim by the artist in the United States belong to Congregation Shearith Israel, the Spanish and Portuguese synagogue in Manhattan.“You want to touch them and trace the exquisite design with your fingers and imagine their centuries of precious use,” Rapoport said of the pair in the museum. “It’s almost intangible and magical.”Oliveyra was born in Amsterdam to a Jewish family of Portuguese descent that had settled in the Dutch city, which was known for its climate of tolerance, after fleeing religious persecution. By his early 30s, he had moved to London, where he and other Jewish artisans had become eligible for membership in professional guilds.That was unusual. Jews in Western Europe, Rapoport said, were typically excluded from artists’ guilds, including the silversmiths’ association, until the 19th century, so most European pieces of Jewish ceremonial art, though commissioned by Jews, were made by Christian silversmiths.Once Oliveyra began producing silverwork, he was frequently commissioned to create Judaica by Jewish communities in London, which was home to both Sephardic and Ashkenazi Jews. Rapoport said both communities bought Oliveyra’s work.“I like to think of him as the go-to-guy for finials,” she said.Rapoport told JTA the museums bought the finials from Gidon Finkelstein, son of the late Belgian diamond dealer and Judaica collector Bernard Finkelstein. They would not disclose the price. A different, less decorated pair of Oliveyra finials sold for $200,000 at auction in 2016, while less substantial finials that could not be authenticated as his handiwork sold at Sotheby’s in June for $25,000.Other rimonim made by Oliveyra are owned by London’s Sephardic Bevis-Marks Synagogue, which bills itself as “the oldest and most splendid Synagogue in Great Britain,” as well as the Hambro Synagogue, which largely served the city’s Ashkenazi Jews beginning in the 18th century. With Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s hardline coalition passing the first piece of legislation of its judicial overhaul last month, US-Israel relations appeared to be dropping to one of their lowest points in years.US President Joe Biden had all but begged Netanyahu not to move ahead with the effort to radically curb the High Court of Justice’s power without at least some support from the opposition. But the prime minister plowed ahead anyway, and his coalition passed the “reasonableness law,” which curtails judicial review of government decisions and appointments, 64-0 on July 24, with the opposition boycotting the vote.The planned overhaul has kept Netanyahu from a coveted White House visit for seven months and counting; all the premier has at the moment is an assurance from Biden that a meeting will happen somewhere in the US by the end of the year.That isn’t to say that ties would improve dramatically if the overhaul were shelved. Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas on Thursday ordered the removal of 12 out of the 16 regional governors in the West Bank and Gaza.Among those ordered to “retire” are the governors of northern Gaza, Gaza City, Khan Younis, and Rafah in the Gaza Strip, according to the official Wafa news agency. Some private partners licensed by the National Identity Management Commission of Nigeria (NIMC) to enroll citizens for the country’s national identification number (NIN) program have reached out to President Ahmed Bola Tinubu for help over unpaid debts.In an open letter published by Nigeria’s Daily Trust newspaper on August 8, one of the agents, Ibrahim Usman, writing from Kaduna, says he is among those who have not been paid by the NIMC for the past one year and eight months.In the letter addressed to Tinubu, Usman says they toiled in villages, towns and cities of the country to enroll citizens for the NIN, but their claims for payment for their services, for nearly two years now, have yet to be paid by the NIMC. The agency blames the delay on an ongoing wait for funds to be disbursed by Nigeria’s Ministry of Finance.Per the letter, the NIMC entered into an agreement with some agents in 2020 to carry out NIN enrollment at the cost of $1 per successful registration, and the partners were expected to prefinance some of the cost by procuring biometric equipment for the exercise.“We have contributed immensely to the realization of over 100 million NINs captured in the NIMC database, which was widely celebrated by the then Minister of Communications and Digital Economy without finding it necessary to settle the real foot soldiers that carried out the exercise,” Usman writes.He adds that many of the agents are young graduates who underwent training for the enrollment using their own funds. “Individuals sourced loans from banks, relations and other financial institutions and purchased the necessary equipment and spent lots on logistics for the success of the exercise, but we are being abandoned with no any communication from both licensees and NIMC,” a portion of Usman’s letter reads.“We have lodged several complaints with the NIMC, Ministry of Communication and Digital Economy and other identified stakeholders to consider our plight but to no avail. Kyodo News reports that 7,400 cases have already been made public, .Prime Minister Fumio Kishida instructed ministers to examine all data on My Number cards by the end of November.The troubled digital ID system, which provides citizens and foreign residents with a 12-digit number linked to their personal data, has been one of the factors behind a significant drop in Kishida’s cabinet’s approval in recent months, according to Bloomberg. Last week, the prime minister apologized for problems with ID cards but said that he wouldn’t necessarily back down on plans for integrating them into the healthcare system.“What Japan is aiming for is to become the world’s most advanced, smart government,” said Kishida. “To that end, we must work on digital infrastructure and government systems.”My Number includes data such as photo and names and can be used to access government services, including tax and social security records, as well as some bank accounts. Would you let a shiny metal orb scan your iris for Crypto and a T-shirt printed with “unique human” written on it? Well, over two million people around the world have signed up to Worldcoin (WLD), an iris biometric cryptocurrency project developed by San Francisco and Berlin-based Tools for Humanity and co-founded by Sam Altman, founder of OpenAI and creator of ChatGPT.The crypto-focused project aims are to create a global unique digital identity (World ID), a global currency (Worldcoin token, WLD) and an app (Word App) that enables payment, purchases and transfers using its token. Central to these three components is the Orb, an iris-scanning device that verifies proof-of-personhood (PoP).World ID is an open and permissionless identity protocol that can be used anonymously to prove uniqueness and humanness.If Altman wanted to generate a ton of noise surrounding Worldcoin, he has certainly achieved his ambition. Not all of the noise is positive though, with questions over the actual use of the Worldcoin token and privacy concerns raised by a number of data protection and privacy regulators including France’s CNIL and the UK’s ICO.There is so much to unpack in this story and a lot has been already said about the merits of the project and the reaction from the world’s regulators. I will concentrate this article on my thoughts on the World ID ‘Technical Implementation’ white paper, including how the biometric components operate.How does World ID work? The first step for someone wanting to get a World ID is to download the World App, a mobile wallet designed to bring digital ID and global finance to all. When the World App works in verified mode, the Orb is used to verify proof-of-personhood (PoP).Enrollments starts with the user creating a Semaphore keypair on their smartphone, referred to as the World ID keypair. The Orb associates the public key with a user’s iris code, whose current sole purpose is to be used in the uniqueness check.Proof-of-personhood answers the question, “are you human and unique?” It doesn’t answer the question of “who are you?” (identity verification), or “are you who you say you are?” (authentication). For the purposes of this project, World ID’s creators believe that this is an adequate level of verification.The Orb is used to verify World ID users based on proof-of-personhood principles. The Orb is a custom device that has taken three years to develop by an in-house team at Tools for Humanity. The decision to engineer a device in-house was taken because the team believed that off-the-shelf technology, including smartphones, were insufficient for their requirements. The white paper states that “smartphone cameras are insufficient for iris biometrics due to their low resolution across the iris, which decreases accuracy.”Iris is a good choice for World ID as if you are looking for a biometric modality that can scale to billions of users with a very low false match rate, then iris is currently the best choice. The UK’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) states that “Iris recognition is considered to have a very low false match rate and is often selected to be used where population sizes are large.” As Worldcoin has lofty aspirations of reaching billions of people globally, then the product and engineering teams have chosen an excellent modality.The white paper goes into great lengths to detail the design and operation of the Orb. The Orb’s iris system uses multi-angle and multi-spectrum cameras to create a high-quality image and to prevent spoof attacks. All iris codes captured by the Orb are signed by a secure element to ensure they have been collected by an authorized device. The device is powered by an Nvidia Jetson Xavier NX that enables running several AI algorithms at the edge in real time that can distinguish spoofing attempts from genuine humans based on the input from those sensors locally.According to the white paper, “no images are stored unless users give explicit consent to help improve the system for everyone.” I am assuming this refers to training reasons, but it does seem to blow a hole in the privacy claims if iris images are being stored. As the Orb is being used around the world in areas where literacy may be low, I am not too sure if whether a World ID user will be qualified enough to make an educated decision on whether to permit their iris image to be stored or not. Several data protection and privacy regulators have expressed concern on this process and have started to enquire about the detail of biometric data and storage. CNIL, the French data protection authority, said in response to a Reuters question on Worldcoin “The legality of this collection seems questionable, as do the conditions for storing biometric data.”The enrollment process for generating a World ID and verifying at an Orb is described in the white paper and is as follows:-Person downloads the World App and generates a World ID keypair-Person visits an Orb and verifies their account by generating a QR code on the World App and presenting it to the Orb-Orb checks person is human, alive and non-fraudulent, and captures both irises-The Orb takes the iris images and converts them (hash function) into the iris code-Orb computes iris code locally and signs it using the Orb’s secure element-Images from the sign up are destroyed “unless explicitly approved by the user for training purposes”World App randomly generates secret key, and from it the identity commitment-Key is stored locally-Checks the iris code is far enough from all previous ones (based on the Hamming distance calculation), and Orb signature-Stores the new iris code on Blockchain-The contract is created by inserting the new identity commitment into the Merkle tree.Thoughts and conclusion-For World ID, the use of iris biometrics in a strikingly designed metal orb is statement of intent for its backers. One that has certainly attracted a lot of attention, even though some of it not so positive. It is a supremely ambitious project, one that has had many critics. I recently posted a question to my LinkedIn network “Is the Orb an expensive gimmick or is it the most viable solution for ensuring that a person is unique when onboarding for World ID?” I received a lot of comments with most of the respondents saying that it was a gimmick. It is definitely dividing opinion and is very similar to the polarization of opinion that we are seeing for Cryptocurrency, SSI and a number of other blockchain-based initiatives. There is also a threat that, despite publicly advocating privacy preserving design and Zero-Knowledge Proof (ZKP) principles, It falls into the trap of portraying biometrics as part of a wider surveillance dystopia. The device itself looks like it fell out of a William Gibson book.I also believe that a problem for Tools for Humanity is that they have developed a very heavily engineered solution to solve one part of the identity conundrum; are you a unique human? From what I take from the white paper, they haven’t solved the ‘what human are you?’ question. I understand that this may go against some of the foundational pillars for decentralized identity and the coin community but if you want a world identity that can be used for voting, for setting up a bank account or for receiving universal basic income (UBI) then I believe you need to know what person is bound to that identity.You would also expect an ambitious global project of this sort to be managed by an established world authority such as the World Bank or the United Nations, not by a group of tech entrepreneurs.I do think that there are positives that can be taken from the project. The project does chime with a number of important trends that I am seeing in the biometric industry that include the importance of biometrics to digital identity and to the growth of stand-alone biometric devices supporting a wide range of applications including travel, hospitality, sports and entertainment, and retail. I believe that this is a positive step as it pushes biometrics into mainstream press and biometric vendors and suppliers could positively ride on the back of this noise.I am sure this story will run and run and I shall definitely be following how the project proceeds as part of my continued research into biometrics and digital identity.

Identity verification through video calls is susceptible to attacks, and like CAPTCHAs risks limiting accessibility for certain groups, according to a report from iProov. It makes the case that biometrics and liveness detection are the technologies that can enable secure and accessible digital identity.“Unlocking Financial Inclusion with Digital Identity and Biometric Verification: European Digital Identity Wallet Use Case” is a 14-page paper that starts with explanations of why legal identity is important, and how digital identity can boost financial inclusion. It proceeds to a review of the EU Digital Identity Wallet (EUDIW) and the pilots being conducted with it.Any financial inclusion project takes on the risk of onboarding people new to the financial system, providing ideal cover for fraudsters, the paper points out. That means strong binding to the official document used as Personal Identification Data (PID) is necessary.iProov goes on to explain why liveness detection is more secure than video call verification, which can be spoofed with generative AI and a forged ID document. Presentation attacks and digital injection attacks are compared, and the imbalance in testing regimes explained.The final section applies these observations to the challenge of increasing the inclusivity of digital identity in the European Union. iProov notes that 24 percent of EU citizens have some form of disability, and 10 percent belong to racial or ethnic minorities, while technology literacy varies heavily from country to country.This makes the convenience and ease-of-use of face biometrics and liveness detection appealing, the company argues.The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) already provides a best practice standard for making digital interactions accessible to all that biometrics vendors can use to improve their software.Compliance with WCAG and other accessibility standards plus strong defense against injection attacks will allow the EU to meet its inclusivity goals with face biometrics, iProov concludes.Ajay Amlani, President and head of Americas for iProov, discussed the need to protect against injection attacks in a recent email to Biometric Update.

U.S. states are continuing their piecemeal introduction of state-issued identity cards with a new project in the state of Arizona attempting to provide IDs to homeless people.The Arizona Department of Transportation will open a new Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) office at the Human Services Campus in Phoenix, which assists people living on the street with access to housing, employment, health services and more.The initiative was launched by Homeless ID, a nonprofit whose mission is to get as many homeless people a state-issued ID as possible, Arizona’s Family reports.In the United States, identity documents are typically issued by a patchwork of offices, with most citizens relying on regional state-issued driver’s licenses or identity cards. This also means that the country has seen a wide variety of digital ID projects with several U.S. states launching pilots​​ to explore mobile driver licenses. Federal efforts have been limited.Lacking an ID card, however, is a significant barrier for people who are on the streets and need to access government social services and regain their self-sufficiency, according to Homeless ID. The organization has so far helped provide 8,000 state-issued IDs and is hoping to increase this figure to more than 17,000 ID’s this year.“You can’t get a job, you can’t get housing, can’t cash a check, can’t open a bank account, can’t enter rehab programs,” says Rick Mitchell, executive director of the Homeless ID Project. “You’ve got to have an ID if you want to change your life.”Similar efforts have also been seen in some developing nations where many people lack identification documents. The company announced its new Chief Financial Officer Ed Sellitto, who will succeed current CFO Annie Pham. Selitto will join the biometric authentication and verification company after serving as vice president of revenue operations at Zero Hash, a company that provides infrastructure for digital assets.In March, AuthID named Rhon Daguro its new CEO. Daguro previously worked alongside Selitto at digital identity verification firm Socure. The company also appointed three new sales VPs focusing on providing authentication services to enterprises.Enacomm CRO-Fintech solution provider Enacomm has named its new chief revenue officer, Stacey Zuniga, who will be tasked with striking strategic partnerships among financial institutions. A tenprint fingerprint segmentation algorithm from Rank One Computing has topped the results of an evaluation by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology for accurate segmentation of biometrics, and placed the company in the top 3 worldwide, according to an announcement.The Slap Fingerprint Segmentation (SlapSeg) Evaluation performed on ROC.ai’s algorithm on July 5 showed 95.7 percent accuracy for detecting 8 fingers with three-inch identification flats. Seven other vendors have scored accuracy between 95.2 percent and 95.6 percent for the same task.Fingerprint segmentation is a process in which an image of the friction ridge structure of a subject’s hand is separated into individual images of the tops of each finger. NIST’s evaluation also covers two-inch, five-inch and eight-inch scansThe result demonstrates ROC.ai’s status as a developer of advanced biometric software and leadership in the domestic market, the company says.“We’re elated with the standout results we’ve achieved with this nascent capability,” says ROC.ai CEO Scott Swann. “The commendations we’ve received both domestically and internationally speak volumes about the precision and dependability of our fingerprint segmentation algorithm. Tomer Bar, met Friday with dozens of reservist pilots who have declared they would no longer show up for volunteer duty to protest the government’s plans to overhaul the judiciary, warning them that the readiness of the force was “worsening.”As the coalition advanced the first major piece of related legislation last month, more than 10,000 reservists who frequently show up for duty on a voluntary basis said they would no longer do so. Three Palestinian teenagers were indicted Friday for seriously wounding an Israeli man during a recent terror stabbing in Jerusalem’s Gilo neighborhood.According to prosecutors, 18-year-old Muhammad Alabiyat, 19-year-old Wizan Abiyat and a 17-year-old minor from the West Bank city of Bethlehem purchased three knives on July 20 and after praying at a mosque, traveled to nearby Gilo to commit an attack.The suspects allegedly drove from the Palestinian town of Beit Jala on a dirt road, then got out and continued by foot to Gilo.After reaching the Jerusalem neighborhood, they searched for a Jewish victim to stab while keeping their knives concealed, a statement from prosecutors said.The group eventually approached a young man on the street and began to converse with him to ensure he was Jewish, and upon realizing he was stabbed him several times being fleeing back toward Bethlehem, the indictment alleged.One of the knives remained lodged in the back of the victim, 25-year-old Or Sayer, while another was found by security forces at the scene. Prosecutors said the third blade remained with one of the suspects.Israeli forces detained the suspects two days later in a cave, where the prosecution said they hid out following the stabbing after first changing clothes.The trio was charged with committing a terrorist act of attempted murder, unlawful possession of a knife and unlawful entry into Israel.Prosecutors requested the Jerusalem District Court order they remain in custody until the end of proceedings.Sayar has remained hospitalized at the Shaare Zedek Medical Center since the attack. The hospital said that upon arrival, he was in very serious and unstable condition, and was taken into surgery. It later said he was stable but still in serious condition, sedated and intubated, in the intensive care ward.The attack came as tensions between Israelis and Palestinians have been high for the past year and a half, with the military carrying out near-nightly raids in the West Bank amid a series of deadly Palestinian terror attacks.

The site held a Polish airplane factory and an airport before World War II, and could have been the target of wartime bombings. Under Nazi German occupation there was a prison and a labor camp there, and at one point, belongings seized from Jews were sorted out there.World War II bombs are still regularly found during earthworks in Poland, which was the site of heavy fighting.
