Call it what it is -- Islamic terrorism-7:31 am, October 3rd, 2014-BRIAN LILLEY | SUN NEWS NETWORK.CA
This week two Muslim groups launched a new booklet in conjunction with the RCMP. It's called "United Against Terrorism" and who could think that's a bad thing. The subtitle of the booklet is "A Collaborative Effort Towards a Secure, Inclusive and Just Canada."Again, sounds like a noble endeavour and there are parts of this booklet that deserve praise, including advice for parents on the warning signs of radicalization. But with the good comes plenty of bad. There is a push to say that terms like jihad and jihadi should not be used."By equating terrorism with jihad and by calling terrorist 'jihadis,' the media, law enforcement, intelligence agencies and politicians have confused the discourse, and this has been counterproductive in challenging the extremist narrative in the minds of the young and vulnerable."This warning on language shows up on page 34 as well as in a section on recommendations for intelligence and law enforcement officials." Abandon public terminology that creates false linkages between Islam and terrorism in favour of consistent language that contextualizes threats and accurately identifies the perpetrators of violent extremism. Avoid terms such as 'Islamist terrorism,' 'Islamicism,' and 'Islamic extremism' in favour of more accurate terms such as 'al-Qaida inspired extremism.'"There are a lot of problems with this part of the handbook including the positioning of the RCMP's name and logo on the front cover which gives these ideas the seeming approval of a major Canadian institution.Since its release the Mounties, who contributed to one section of the handbook, have made statements distancing themselves from the publication. But they have refused to answer my questions on whether they will ask for their name and logo to be removed from the cover. As long as it remains on the book, it will allow supporters of these ideas to say the Mounties oppose using terms like jihad. That will lead to pressure on other police forces and media outlets to stop using those terms. That's already happened in the United States where links between Islam and terror have been removed from official law enforcement manuals and where President Obama says ISIS is not Islamic. Here is the problem: Obama may not want to call ISIS Islamic, and the National Council of Canadian Muslims may not want to link Islam and terrorism, but the people carrying out the terror strikes do.Listen to the comments of Canadians and other westerners joining ISIS and other jihadi groups. We can point to Maj. Nidal Hasan, the Fort Hood shooter who called himself a soldier of Allah and called out "Allah Akbar" as he shot 13 people dead in cold blood. We can point to the Oklahoma beheading last week at a meat plant where Alton Nolen, aka Jah' Keem Yisrael, got into an argument over the proper Islamic way to punish women for crimes, was fired for his abusive behaviour and then returned to behead a woman. From these people and groups, to the 9/11 hijackers, the Toronto 18, the 7/7 bombers in Britain and the countless plots and arrests in Canada of people saying they want to kill in the name of Islam, in the name of Allah. You can claim all you want that they have nothing to do with Islam - but the people doing the shootings, the bombings, the beheadings say they are doing it for their religion. They claim they are joining the jihad. If you want to have a debate over what is the true interpretation of Islam, that's fine -- but don't try to say we cannot or should not make a connection that is clearly there.

ISIS fighters 'repugnant to Islam', Muhammad show tells Calgary audience
CBC – OCT 3,14-YAHOONEWS
There was a full house at the Calgary Jubilee Auditorium Thursday night for a show detailing the life of the Prophet Mohammed and the message of peace that underlies his teachings.Organizers hope “The Astonishing Story of the Prophet” will remind non-Muslims that the vast majority of Islam’s adherents do not share the radical views espoused by ISIS.The insurgents — who call themselves the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) — have taken control of large sections of both countries, committing atrocities along the way in the name of Allah.Lal Khan Malik, the national president of Ahmadiyya Muslim community, which put on the show, says ISIS twists the teachings of Mohammed.“They are doing something which is repugnant to Islam. It is a shame to Islam and it is a shame that they are using this name,” he said. The show has been touring across the country. Its next stop is the University of Saskatchewan in November.

Prime Minister Harper announces plans for Canada to perform airstrikes against ISIS-By Andy Radia | Canada Politics – OCT 3,14-YAHOONEWS
On Friday, Prime Minister Stephen Harper spoke in the House of Commons to unveil his government’s plan to send up to six CF-18 fighters, one refueling tanker and two surveillance aircrafts to join several other countries in the U.S. led airstrikes over Iraq. "Today we’re bringing forward a motion asking this House to confirm its confidence for a government decision to join our allies and partners…in launching airstrikes against ISIL," Harper said."Let me be clear on the objectives of this intervention. We intend to significantly degrade the capabilities of ISIL. Specifically its ability to either engage in military movements of scale or to operate bases in the open."One could say that while the mission is evidently necessary, we don’t have to be the ones doing it because others will. But Mr. Speaker, throughout our history that has never been the Canadian way to do only the most easy and praiseworthy of actions and to leave the tough things for others."Harper added that Canada will only be involved in airstrikes over Iraq — for now — but kept the door open to strikes over Syria if their government makes the request. The government’s motion, which is to be voted on in Parliament early next week, calls on MPs to support the Government’s decision to contribute Canadian military assets to the fight against ISIS for a period of up to six months. It also specifies that the government will not deploy troops in ground combat operations. The prime minister also hinted that more humanitarian aid and further counter-terrorism measures to protect Canadians in Canada may be in the offing. The opposition parties had the opportunity to respond, in the House of Commons, immediately after Harper’s speech. "The prime minister hasn’t outlined a broad strategic blueprint for the mission. He can’t even answer specific questions about the breadth or cost of Canada’s military deployment," NDP leader Thomas Mulcair said, "How much will this mission cost? What are the rules of engagement? What is our exit strategy? No answer. No answer. No answer. "Canada’s first contribution should be to use every diplomatic, humanitarian and financial resource at our disposal to respond to the overwhelming human tragedy unfolding on the ground and strengthen political institutions in both [Syria and Iraq]."Liberal leader Justin Trudeau said his party would vote against the motion. "Unlike the prime minister, Liberals believe Canada can make a more helpful contribution to the international effort to ISIL than a few aging warplanes," Trudeau said to groans of Conservative MPs."We can be resourceful. There are significant, substantial non-combat roles that Canada can play. And some, we can play better than many or perhaps any of our allies. Whether they are strategic airlift, training or medical support. We have the capabilities to meaningfully assist in a non-combat roll a well-defined international mission."The Liberal Party of Canada cannot and will not support this prime minister’s motion to go to war in Iraq."Follow @PoliticalPoints on Twitter!
ISIS fight: 6-month maximum attached to Canada's air combat offer-CBC – OCT 3,14-YAHOONEWS
Canada is offering a six-month air combat mission, but no ground troops, to fight Islamic jihadists in the Mideast, according to a motion tabled in the House of Commons today.Prime Minister Stephen Harper told the House of Commons on Friday that Canada's contribution will include one air-to-air refuelling aircraft, two Aurora surveillance aircraft and the necessary air crews and support personnel. The Prime Minister's Office said Canada is offering up to six CF-18 fighter jets to the mission.- Nahleh Ayed: How ISIS and Syria drove a stake through the Arab Spring.-Harper pledged to strike ISIS "where — and only where — Canada has the clear support of the government of that country." That doesn't include Syria right now, he said, but Canada would expand its airstrikes to include Syria if that changes.Harper also said Canada is extending the deployment of up to 69 military advisers assisting security forces in Iraq, of which 26 are on the ground. That initial 30-day deployment was set to wrap up Saturday.Insurgents calling themselves the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria have swept into parts of the region, conducting a brutal campaign against religious minorities and other residents. ISIS, or ISIL, as the fighters are also known, has attracted foreign fighters to their cause, including Canadians.NDP Leader Tom Mulcair didn't explicitly rule out supporting the mission, but said he hopes his questions are answered during the debate next week, and said humanitarian aid and diplomatic measures should come before a military assault.Mulcair expressed concern that Canada could be stuck in a "quagmire" in Iraq 10 years from now, and 20 years after declining to join the last Iraq war.
NDP fear mission to expand to Syria
Mulcair said he's concerned Canada could end up bombing Syria without the government going back to the House for further debate. In an interview to air Saturday at 9 a.m. on CBC Radio's The House, the NDP leader said "no one's learning the lessons" of the past 12 years in the region around Iraq and Syria."The break-apart, the horrible civil war... is related to that, so directly or indirectly we're going to wind up helping the Assad regime [if Canada bombs ISIS in Syria]. I think that that's a tragedy as well," Mulcair told the CBC's Chris Hall.Mulcair also chastised Harper for referring to the election when urging the opposition parties to support the motion. Harper said in his speech that "there is rarely political upside in supporting any kind of military action, and little political risk in opposing it."Mulcair called it undignified for Harper "to ascribe motives in that way," and said it was "unfortunate rhetoric on a day where we should have been elevating the tone and the debate in the House."Despite the proposed time limit and lack of ground troops, Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau said the party will not support the mission.Pressed for specific reasons, Trudeau said it's clear Harper "is not interested in gaining the support of the opposition parties." He couldn't say under what conditions the party would support a mission. "The Liberal Party of Canada cannot and will not support this prime minister's motion to go to war in Iraq," he said.
'Little political risk' in opposing military action
"The prime minister in his motion today once again relied on rhetoric rather than facts and information. He has no plan, he has not justified his case for going to war in Iraq, and therefore the Liberal Party cannot support it," Trudeau said. The debate and vote on the motion are expected to come Monday or Tuesday. The motion tabled by Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird calls for MPs to support contributing "Canadian military assets ... including airstrike capability for a period of up to six months.- Analysis: Harper readying groundwork for Canada's turn in Iraq-It also notes "that the government of Canada will not deploy troops in ground combat operations."Harper reiterated the government's belief that ISIS has "specifically targeted Canada and Canadians" by "urging supporters to attack Canadians," though some experts have questioned whether ISIS has the capacity to do so."Left unchecked, this terrorist threat can only grow and grow quickly. As a government, we know our ultimate responsibility is to protect Canadians, and to defend our citizens from those who would do harm to us and to our families."An audio recording from ISIS last month urged Muslims to kill "disbelievers" in countries, including Canada, supporting the U.S.-led combat mission.'Is this what they want us to do?'Canada is already contributing humanitarian aid to people fleeing the fighting and airlifts of munitions to Iraqi and Kurdish forces battling ISIS fighters.Green Party Leader Elizabeth May called for more than one day of debate, and said she supports the prime minister's intentions but opposes the mission because bombing countries hasn't helped in the past."Let's try to look at the lessons of history before we go to war again," she said. It's not true that Canada doesn't stand by when atrocities happen, May said, pointing to massive conflicts in the Democratic Republic of Congo and other countries where Canada didn't try to help. And, she said, it's possible ISIS is trying to provoke confrontation with the West."Are we potentially doing exactly what this appalling, abhorrent, despised group wants us to do?" she said.
Politics may be hindering Canadian Muslim effort to combat radicalization-Daily Brew – OCT 2,14-YAHOONEWS
Ever since the 9/11 terror attacks there’s been a steady demand for Canadian Muslims to speak out against radical Islam. But it appears an effort to do just that may have been partly derailed by politics.
The RCMP suddenly pulled out of a news conference Monday to launch United Against Terror [PDF], a pamphlet produced by two Muslim organizations with the help of the Mounties, who contributed a chapter to it.Members of the Muslim community, surprised by the move, worry it could undermine efforts to build trust between law enforcement agencies and young Muslims who they hope to keep from becoming radicalized.“It doesn’t look good to have the RCMP and other institutions at public odds about an issue that is really important,” Sheema Khan, an author and commentator, told Yahoo Canada News.“This event sets things back. It sends a very wrong message.”The 38-page pamphlet was the brainchild of Shahina Siddiqui, president of the Winnipeg-based Islamic Social Services Agency (ISSA), following a June 2013 town hall meeting about how to stop the trickle of young Muslim men going abroad to join extremist Islamic groups. The meeting, which included RCMP representatives, drew about 200 people.More than 130 Canadian Muslims are thought to have joined various jihadist organizations from Somalia to Syria, including the Islamic State now rampaging across Syria and Iraq. The booklet is designed to answer questions about things such as extreme interpretations of Islam, the real meaning of jihad, the lure of radical ideas for the young, Muslims’ rights and responsibilities as Canadians and the protective role of the RCMP, CSIS and other agencies.Since 9/11, some Muslims have complained about being harassed by CSIS agents and Mounties over their associations and attitudes, making segments of Canada’s million-member Muslim community leery of helping the authorities.Tasleem Bhudwani, a clinical psychologist working for the RCMP, was one of the contributors to the pamphlet.Besides the ISSA and the RCMP, the other main partner in the project was the National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM), whose involvement may provide a clue to what happened. The Mounties were on board with the pamphlet as late as last Friday, when the RCMP sent out a media advisory saying a representative from D Division headquarters would be at the news conference at a Winnipeg mosque to help launch it.But Siddiqui got word Monday morning the Mounties would not be showing up.“They said NHQ [national headquarters] had some concerns and so they could not participate in the release,” she told Yahoo Canada News on Wednesday.
The following day, the RCMP issued a cryptic statement:
“After a final review of the handbook, the RCMP could not support the adversarial tone set by elements of the booklet and therefore directed RCMP Manitoba not to proceed with this initiative.”The statement explained the Mounties had contributed to only one chapter and was not responsible for content of the rest of the booklet, mirroring a small-print disclaimer in the pamphlet itself. The statement does not elaborate on what exactly the RCMP deemed adversarial. A spokesman at RCMP headquarters in Ottawa told Yahoo Canada News the force would not expand on its posted statement.Siddiqui said she’s also received no explanation.“Am I confused?” she said. “Yes, I am and like you I’m hoping to get some answers. If there is a concern let’s talk about it.”NCCM human rights co-ordinator Amy Awad said from Ottawa they didn’t hear of the Mounties’ objections until the statement.“Before that we had been collaborating,” she said from Ottawa. “They had opportunities to vet the content on several occasions and we hadn’t heard about any concerns.”The ISSA and NCCM issued a joint statement Tuesday calling the project a success despite the apparent disavowal by the RCMP.“This initiative has been a true success as it brought law enforcement, community leaders and Canadian Muslim communities together with a common focus on safeguarding Canada and addressing youth radicalization towards criminal violence,” the statement says.“The handbook does take an adversarial stance against violent extremists and those who seek to recruit and radicalize Canadian youth towards criminal violence.“As might be expected, the content of the handbook was shared with all contributors for constructive feedback throughout the 14 month development process. All feedback received was incorporated.”The inexplicable 11th-hour pullout has some Muslims wondering if the order came from higher up in the government, possibly because someone noticed the NCCM was involved in the project. The council, formerly known as the Canadian Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-CAN), launched a defamation lawsuit last May against Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Jason MacDonald, his director of communications, for comments linking the council to Hamas, which governs Palestine’s Gaza Strip and is listed as a terrorist organization in Canada. The NCCM had demanded an apology after MacDonald lashed back against the council’s criticism of inclusion of a Toronto rabbi as part of Harper’s party during his state visit to Israel last year. Critics have claimed CAIR-CAN’s U.S. parent organization was a longtime Hamas front group.“We’re suing them because they [the Hamas connections claim] were false,” said Awad, adding it has no hard evidence the RCMP’s decision was linked to the suit.“That’s a very logical theory but we don’t have any more information to confirm it or refute it,” she said.“In terms of what specifically may have occurred and if and how the current governing party was involved, we don’t have any more information than you do about that.”The Prime Minister’s Office did not respond to a request for comment.Awad said her group’s relationship with government is not adversarial.“We’re not partisan and we criticize and compliment every government on the aspects of their policies and actions that we believe serve the long-term interests of Canada,” she said. Both the NCCM and ISSA said they intend to keep working with the RCMP to combat radicalization of young Canadian Muslims.“We do need to work together on this because we have raised the level of trust within the community for the RCMP because of our constant outreach to them, and theirs to us, by the way,” said Siddiqui. The handbook is already a success, she said, and will form the basis for workshops set up by other Muslim groups.Awad echoed Siddiqui’s promise of co-operation but worried the RCMP’s sudden step back from the anti-radicalization booklet undermined the message to the community. Some believe there’s still some “anti-Muslim animus” within society and law enforcement, she sad.“Whether that exists or not, definitely there’s a perception of that,” she said. “This might play out as further alienating those people who have that perception.“If that’s the case, that would be unfortunate and we’ll do everything we can to try to make this a successful initiative and not have that happen.”Khan, who once chaired CAIR-CAN and whose columns appear regularly in the Globe and Mail, said this incident should not be allowed to hamper co-operation to fight radical influences. The booklet, she said, was a good first step.“We can’t let this fall apart.”
Trudeau accepts Sun News Network apology-7:28 pm, September 29th, 2014-QMI AGENCY
On Monday the Sun News Network apologized to Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau for a segment it says was in poor taste."In a monologue that aired September 15, 2014, on The Source, host Ezra Levant criticized Justin Trudeau for 'photo-bombing' a bridal party. In this monologue he detailed a number of controversies involving Justin Trudeau's parents and their marriage," the network said in a statement Monday."It is the view of Sun News that this segment was in poor taste and should not have been aired. We understand why many viewers found both the content and language of this segment to be offensive."We apologize to Mr. Trudeau, his family and to our viewers."Last week, Trudeau vowed not to talk to any English-language reporter from Sun Media -- the country's largest newspaper publisher and operator of most widely-watched French-language television channels, TVA and LCN as well as the English-language cable news channel Sun News Network -- until the matter of Levant's editorial was dealt with by the company. After the apology aired ahead of Monday's broadcast of Levant's program, Trudeau's office issued a brief statement."We accept Sun News' apology. We look forward to (Sun Media) journalists resuming participation in Mr. Trudeau's press conferences," Trudeau's communications director Kate Purchase said in a statement.
Canadian opinions shifting to the left in terms of social issues, new data suggests-By Andy Radia | Canada Politics – OCT 2,14-YAHOONEWS
New data released by Ekos Research this week could prove to be a double whammy for the Harper Conservatives. On Wednesday, Ekos released its latest federal vote intention poll: It states that support for the Tories is at a nine-year low."Not only would the government be in no position to aspire to repeat its 2011 success, it may not even achieve leader of the opposition with these numbers. While we find this scenario unlikely, the continued flagging of Conservative Party fortunes now renders this a real possibility,” Ekos CEO Frank Graves wrote in his analysis of the survey. "The Liberal ascension under Justin Trudeau is no mere blip; it is a long, slow march. Secondly, the Conservative decline is no ephemeral blip caused by some controversy or wobble. It is a steady and grim decline along a straight line of descent. If this were an ECG, the prognosis would be pretty bleak."While other pollsters don’t have the Tories near a figurative death, they do have the Liberals stretching their lead.Abacus Data’s poll, which was also released this week, had the Liberals at 38 per cent support, an eight point lead over the Conservatives. The latest Angus Reid poll has Justin Trudeau’s party at 36 per cent and the Tories at 30. Certainly mid-term polls provide no guarantees of electoral victory, but the trends should be of concern to Tory strategists. So should this. As part of a conference organized by progressive think-tank Canada2020, Graves presented data on Canadians’ changing attitudes and values over the past 15 years. Using social issues as his basis, Graves illustrated that Canadians are clearly shifting to the left. He’s calling it a “progressive wave.”Question: “Please rate the extent to which you agree or disagree with the following statement: I would support the reintroduction of capital punishment” Question: “Thinking about your general views on abortion, would you say you are more pro-life or pro-choice?” Question: “Please rate the extent to which you agree or disagree with the following statement: “Possession of small amounts of marijuana for personal use SHOULD NOT BE A CRIME.” Question: “Forgetting about your current party choice, do you consider yourself a small “l” liberal or a small “c” conservative?” In recent years, some – here and here – have suggested that Canadians are shifting to the right. But Graves’ analysis is quite compelling. “I think most Canadians find themselves increasingly at odds with a leader who clearly espouses right wing values which are increasingly in a state of tension with a clear public movement away from small-c conservative values,” Graves recently told Yahoo Canada News."On most of the key social issues of the day Canadians are shifting to the center-left.”What do you think? Are Canadians as a whole becoming more progressive?
