Israel's public and emergency services are being prepared for the possibility of a tumultuous day, ahead of the upcoming Yom Kippur fast as well as the Muslim celebration of Eid al-Adha. Magen David Adom (MDA) medics are on high alert, preparing for the inevitable onslaught of injuries from cyclists, emergency calls from pregnant women, and incidents of dehydration on the annual 25-hour fast.Thousands of people are in need of medical treatment every year, MDA noted - prompting the organization to be on its highest alert level from Friday morning to Saturday night, according to MDA Director Eli Bin."Every year, MDA provides lifesaving treatment to patients all over the country, who suffer from dehydration or are injured while riding their bicycles, during the fast," Bin said."This year, while many people pray in synagogues, MDA staff will be out saving lives," he added, noting that MDA ambulances and ambucycles will be patrolling the streets of Israel's major cities throughout the holiday. Two helicopters will also be on patrol for potential airlifts.
Pre-fast guidelines
MDA has advised all Jews fasting Friday night through Saturday to drink at least a liter and a half of water before the holiday, and cut back on caffeine and drinks with high sugar content as the fast approaches. In addition, they recommend fasters to abstain completely from salty foods in the 24 hours before the holiday begins to avoid dehydration.During the meal before the fast, it is recommended to combine all food groups - complex carbohydrates with protein and vegetables - which create a feeling of fullness for longer.All fasters have been advised to drink more water if they plan on traveling during the fast, and to stay indoors in an air-conditioned area for as long as possible; temperatures could reach as high as 28C (82F) on Saturday in some areas.MDA recommends that the elderly and pregnant women consult a doctor before fasting, as well as patients with kidney failure, heart disease, atherosclerosis, diabetes, high blood pressure, epilepsy, thyroid issues, and cancer.In any event, they stressed, any fasting person who experiences extreme dehydration, chest pain, excessive sweating or difficulty breathing, is urged to call 101 (or United Hatzalah's number, 110) for emergency medical assistance.

Similar moves have been made ahead of other times of expected unrest, usually ahead of Jewish and Muslim holidays. Police and Border Police patrols will also increase, especially in mixed cities, according to the daily - with an especially high police presence at the Western Wall (Kotel) in Jerusalem's Old City.In preparation for Eid al Adha, police have been dispatched throughout Muslim areas of the Old City and in alleyways in Arab neighborhoods of Jerusalem. Checkpoints have been set up along major roads near Jerusalem's Arab neighborhoods, as well, in anticipation of further rioting and unrest during both holidays. All travelers seeking to visit the Temple Mount during Eid al-Adha have been instructed to take a handful of predetermined routes, which will be monitored by police throughout the weekend.

Brussels called on Israel to "urgently reverse" actions leading to expansion in Jerusalem, which the Palestinian Authority (PA) hopes to claim as the capital of a future state, following a smear campaign against the project launched by extreme leftist group Peace Now. "This represents a further highly detrimental step that undermines prospects for a two-state solution and calls into question Israel's commitment to a peaceful negotiated settlement with the Palestinians," the EU's diplomatic service said.The housing units, which have been slated for construction since 2012 in the neighborhood of Givat Hamatos, were given final approval last week.The EU also condemned Israel for allowing Jews to move into buildings legally transferred from Arab to Jewish ownership in Silwan, a neighborhood close to the City of David historical site and the Western Wall. In a stunning bi-partisan “Congressional Letter” from over 353 out of 435 U.S. congresspersons to US Secretary of State John Kerry, the 353 U.S. representatives issued a stark warning that, “As you wrote in the Washington Post earlier this summer, if Iran’s nuclear program is truly peaceful, “it’s not a hard proposition to prove. The only reasonable conclusion for its stonewalling of international investigators is that Tehran does indeed have much to hide.”The Congressional Letter’s signatories included almost all of both parties’ leaderships, and was greatly aided by Republican Congressman Peter J. Roskam (R-IL-06) of Illinois, a stalwart, and tireless, advocate of Israel as a vital strategic asset of the United States.In a June 30, 2014, Washington Post opinion-piece entitled “Iranian nuclear deal still is possible, but time is running out,” Secretary Kerry had exhorted Iran to prove it “nuclear program is truly peaceful.”The Congressional Letter, dated October 1, 2014, focused on Iran’s “refusal to fully cooperate” with the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) concerning the “possible military dimensions” of Iran’s program first outlined by the IAEA in November 2011. The Congressional Letter to Sec. Kerry also stated, “As you know, the IAEA has sought information on the 'potential military dimensions' of the Iranian nuclear program, in particular information about Iran’s extensive research and development of a nuclear explosive device.”This Congressional warning follows a similar warning from Israel Intelligence Minister Yuval Steinitz, who issued a statement last week that emphasized that “credible sources” alleged that “internal neutron sources such as uranium were used in nuclear implosion tests at [Iran’s] Parchin.”Steinitz’ Iranian “nuclear detonator” allegations center on the fact that Iran, after close to three years, has failed to explain to the IAEA allegations in the IAEA’s November 2011 report annex, which stated in paragraph 55 that the IAEA “has information from a Member State [likely Pakistan – ML] that Iran has undertaken work to manufacture small capsules suitable as containers of a component containing nuclear material”, and that “Iran may also have experimented with such components in order to assess their performance in generating neutrons.”Such a device for “generating neutrons” is called a “neutron initiator” (See A.Q. Khan graphic immediately below). Neutron initiators are one of the key components to an “implosion” type of nuclear bombs. Implosion nuclear bombs can use as their bomb “core” either highly-enriched Uranium (U235), or weapons’ grade plutonium (See, A.Q. Khan’s graphic).

As is illustrated by A. Q. Khan, the “godfather of the Pakistani nuclear-bomb,” “Neutron initiators” act like “lighter fluid” to an implosion nuclear-bomb nuclear-core, and set off the first burst of the implosion nuclear chain-reaction.Iran’s alleged testing of such a “nuclear initiators” has been unexplained by Iran to date. Heightening fears that such Iranian testing would prove Iran’s nuclear weapons’ intentions is the fact that “neutron initiators” have no dual purpose. This means there is no “civilian” non-weapons’ purpose to “neutron initiators” which could help Iran explain away Iran’s testing of such a device. Since, there is other non-nuclear dual use, the sole purpose of testing such a neutron initiator would be for the constructing and/or designing of a nuclear bomb.As for the 353 U.S. Representatives’ immediate concerns, their letter closed ominously by stating:“As you have written, there is a 'discrepancy…between Iran’s professed intent with respect to its nuclear program and the actual content of that program to date.' We agree with your assessment that “these issues cannot be dismissed; they must be addressed by the Iranians if a comprehensive solution is to be reached.”

Israel's public and emergency services are being prepared for the possibility of a tumultuous day, ahead of the upcoming Yom Kippur fast as well as the Muslim celebration of Eid al-Adha. Magen David Adom (MDA) medics are on high alert, preparing for the inevitable onslaught of injuries from cyclists, emergency calls from pregnant women, and incidents of dehydration on the annual 25-hour fast.Thousands of people are in need of medical treatment every year, MDA noted - prompting the organization to be on its highest alert level from Friday morning to Saturday night, according to MDA Director Eli Bin."Every year, MDA provides lifesaving treatment to patients all over the country, who suffer from dehydration or are injured while riding their bicycles, during the fast," Bin said."This year, while many people pray in synagogues, MDA staff will be out saving lives," he added, noting that MDA ambulances and ambucycles will be patrolling the streets of Israel's major cities throughout the holiday. Two helicopters will also be on patrol for potential airlifts.
Pre-fast guidelines
MDA has advised all Jews fasting Friday night through Saturday to drink at least a liter and a half of water before the holiday, and cut back on caffeine and drinks with high sugar content as the fast approaches. In addition, they recommend fasters to abstain completely from salty foods in the 24 hours before the holiday begins to avoid dehydration.During the meal before the fast, it is recommended to combine all food groups - complex carbohydrates with protein and vegetables - which create a feeling of fullness for longer.All fasters have been advised to drink more water if they plan on traveling during the fast, and to stay indoors in an air-conditioned area for as long as possible; temperatures could reach as high as 28C (82F) on Saturday in some areas.MDA recommends that the elderly and pregnant women consult a doctor before fasting, as well as patients with kidney failure, heart disease, atherosclerosis, diabetes, high blood pressure, epilepsy, thyroid issues, and cancer.In any event, they stressed, any fasting person who experiences extreme dehydration, chest pain, excessive sweating or difficulty breathing, is urged to call 101 (or United Hatzalah's number, 110) for emergency medical assistance.

Similar moves have been made ahead of other times of expected unrest, usually ahead of Jewish and Muslim holidays. Police and Border Police patrols will also increase, especially in mixed cities, according to the daily - with an especially high police presence at the Western Wall (Kotel) in Jerusalem's Old City.In preparation for Eid al Adha, police have been dispatched throughout Muslim areas of the Old City and in alleyways in Arab neighborhoods of Jerusalem. Checkpoints have been set up along major roads near Jerusalem's Arab neighborhoods, as well, in anticipation of further rioting and unrest during both holidays. All travelers seeking to visit the Temple Mount during Eid al-Adha have been instructed to take a handful of predetermined routes, which will be monitored by police throughout the weekend.

The European Union (EU) on Friday condemned Israel's plans to build 2,610 new homes in a Jewish neighborhood in Jerusalem, calling it "highly detrimental" to diplomatic efforts for Israeli-Palestinian peace, according to AFP. Brussels called on Israel to "urgently reverse" actions leading to expansion in Jerusalem, which the Palestinian Authority (PA) hopes to claim as the capital of a future state, following a smear campaign against the project launched by extreme leftist group Peace Now. "This represents a further highly detrimental step that undermines prospects for a two-state solution and calls into question Israel's commitment to a peaceful negotiated settlement with the Palestinians," the EU's diplomatic service said.The housing units, which have been slated for construction since 2012 in the neighborhood of Givat Hamatos, were given final approval last week.The EU also condemned Israel for allowing Jews to move into buildings legally transferred from Arab to Jewish ownership in Silwan, a neighborhood close to the City of David historical site and the Western Wall. The EU took the opportunity to once again threaten Israel, saying that the "future of EU-Israel relations" depends on Israel's "commitment to peace."The bloc has threatened Israel multiple times to further its agenda in the Middle East, dangling unprecedented aid packages to both Jerusalem and Ramallah if a two-state solution is implemented. The harsh criticism flung by US President Barack Obama's administration against Israel this week for a building project in Jerusalem is only a sign of things to come, according to Attorney Yoram Sheftel.
The controversy came over a building project of 2,610 housing units in Givat Hamatos, a Jewish neighborhood in Jerusalem, which was in the works since 2012, and which Netanyahu accused far-left group Peace Now of reporting precisely now so as to scuttle his meeting with Obama.Writing in his weekly Hebrew column for Arutz Sheva, Sheftel wrote "Obama doesn't want a nuclear Iran, but he wants an Iran that can enrich uranium and threaten Israel - it's one of the most hostile regimes for Israel that wants Iran to threaten us, because today we have no more bitter enemy in the western world than the United States."After Netanyahu struck back at the White House's criticism of the housing plan that set the road for possible tenders in the Jewish neighborhood sometime in the future, telling Obama to "check the facts" before condemning, Obama's administration tersely fired back that it has the facts.According to Sheftel, "soon they will come out with condemnations on construction in Tel Aviv. Earlier Thursday, Turkish MPs voted to allow the use of armed forces against jihadists of the “Islamic State” (IS or ISIS) group in Syria and Iraq, both of which border Turkey.However, the one-year mandate is very broad in scope and in no way commits Turkey to sending troops into Syria and Iraq.The government has said it will decide on concrete steps after winning authorization, with many analysts expecting a cautious approach.Iran supports President Bashar Al-Assad in Syria's more than three-year-old civil war, while Turkey backs rebels seeking to overthrow him.A coalition led by the United States, having already launched airstrikes against ISIS targets in Iraq, has also begun airstrikes against the group’s targets in Syria.ISIS, for its part, has been eagerly uploading to the internet footage of interviews with its fighters saying they remain unfazed by the bombing - and vowing revenge against the U.S.

In a stunning bi-partisan “Congressional Letter” from over 353 out of 435 U.S. congresspersons to US Secretary of State John Kerry, the 353 U.S. representatives issued a stark warning that, “As you wrote in the Washington Post earlier this summer, if Iran’s nuclear program is truly peaceful, “it’s not a hard proposition to prove. The only reasonable conclusion for its stonewalling of international investigators is that Tehran does indeed have much to hide.”The Congressional Letter’s signatories included almost all of both parties’ leaderships, and was greatly aided by Republican Congressman Peter J. Roskam (R-IL-06) of Illinois, a stalwart, and tireless, advocate of Israel as a vital strategic asset of the United States.In a June 30, 2014, Washington Post opinion-piece entitled “Iranian nuclear deal still is possible, but time is running out,” Secretary Kerry had exhorted Iran to prove it “nuclear program is truly peaceful.”The Congressional Letter, dated October 1, 2014, focused on Iran’s “refusal to fully cooperate” with the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) concerning the “possible military dimensions” of Iran’s program first outlined by the IAEA in November 2011. The Congressional Letter to Sec. Kerry also stated, “As you know, the IAEA has sought information on the 'potential military dimensions' of the Iranian nuclear program, in particular information about Iran’s extensive research and development of a nuclear explosive device.”This Congressional warning follows a similar warning from Israel Intelligence Minister Yuval Steinitz, who issued a statement last week that emphasized that “credible sources” alleged that “internal neutron sources such as uranium were used in nuclear implosion tests at [Iran’s] Parchin.”Steinitz’ Iranian “nuclear detonator” allegations center on the fact that Iran, after close to three years, has failed to explain to the IAEA allegations in the IAEA’s November 2011 report annex, which stated in paragraph 55 that the IAEA “has information from a Member State [likely Pakistan – ML] that Iran has undertaken work to manufacture small capsules suitable as containers of a component containing nuclear material”, and that “Iran may also have experimented with such components in order to assess their performance in generating neutrons.”Such a device for “generating neutrons” is called a “neutron initiator” (See A.Q. Khan graphic immediately below). Neutron initiators are one of the key components to an “implosion” type of nuclear bombs. Implosion nuclear bombs can use as their bomb “core” either highly-enriched Uranium (U235), or weapons’ grade plutonium (See, A.Q. Khan’s graphic).

As is illustrated by A. Q. Khan, the “godfather of the Pakistani nuclear-bomb,” “Neutron initiators” act like “lighter fluid” to an implosion nuclear-bomb nuclear-core, and set off the first burst of the implosion nuclear chain-reaction.Iran’s alleged testing of such a “nuclear initiators” has been unexplained by Iran to date. Heightening fears that such Iranian testing would prove Iran’s nuclear weapons’ intentions is the fact that “neutron initiators” have no dual purpose. This means there is no “civilian” non-weapons’ purpose to “neutron initiators” which could help Iran explain away Iran’s testing of such a device. Since, there is other non-nuclear dual use, the sole purpose of testing such a neutron initiator would be for the constructing and/or designing of a nuclear bomb.As for the 353 U.S. Representatives’ immediate concerns, their letter closed ominously by stating:“As you have written, there is a 'discrepancy…between Iran’s professed intent with respect to its nuclear program and the actual content of that program to date.' We agree with your assessment that “these issues cannot be dismissed; they must be addressed by the Iranians if a comprehensive solution is to be reached.”
