"We have lifted the tail onto the ship. It's red and white and a big part of the AirAsia logo can be seen," Navy spokesman Manahan Simorangkir told AFP.On board the KRI Banda Aceh that is one of the Indonesian Navy vessels involved in the search effort, sailors cheered as the tail first emerged at the surface, according to an AFP photographer on board. The tail is the biggest part of the plane's wreckage found and could give clues to why it crashed.

PANGKALAN BUN, Indonesia: At Kumai Port in Central Kalimantan 10 from the specialist diving team known as SAR are poised to head out to sea, assisted by crews from the country's search and rescue agency BASARNAS.Diving teams are performing one of the most important roles of this operation. Every day they are being sent down into the murky waters to try and find any debris, bodies or even the the black box.It is an arduous task and they are being hampered by severe weather conditions – strong waves and heavy underwater currents.Rendra Hertiadhi is the team's field commander and has 30 years of diving experience.“Our job is to dive and recover bodies from the fuselage of the aircraft if it is found and also to retrieve whatever instrument like the flight data recorder if it happened that we found it near the bodies," he said.“We have to release (the bodies) from whatever is trapping them, we put them in the body bags, tied to a shoot line then float them to the surface where on the surface our guys on the boat will recover the bags and bring them to shore."The dive teams are severely affected by currents, waves and wind.The team said if the underwater current is less than five knots it is still safe for them to go down. It requires technical and tactical expertise. PARIS (AFP) - France, where police ended two hostage dramas Friday killing Islamist brothers wanted for the Charlie Hebdo massacre and a third suspected extremist who attacked a Jewish supermarket, has the biggest Jewish and Muslim populations in Europe.Between 500,000 and 600,000-strong, France's Jewish community is also the third biggest in the world, after Israel and the United States. France's Muslims are estimated at between four and five million.

- The Muslim community -

France has long had a difficult relationship with its Muslim minority that dates back to bloody struggles in its former North African colonies and the legacy of immigrants trapped in some of the country's poorest districts.Long decades of insurgency against French rule in Algeria in the mid-twentieth century, followed by a spate of Algerian terrorist attacks in France in the 1990s created difficulties for communal relations -- which reawakened with the rise of global jihadism after 9/11.This week's jihad-prompted massacre at Charlie Hebdo magazine has further stoked fears of Islamophobia in a country that has struggled to integrate its millions-strong Islamic minority.Algerians, whether by nationality or origin, are the biggest and oldest Muslim group in France and are estimated at more than 1.5 million.They come ahead of Moroccans who number around one million and Tunisians at 400,000. Intelligence suggests that Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad is building a secret underground plant with the aim of developing nuclear weapons, Germany's Spiegel news magazine said Friday, according to AFP.Citing information made available by unidentified intelligence sources, Spiegel said the plant was in an inaccessible mountain region in the west of the war-ravaged country, two kilometers (1.2 miles) from the Lebanese border.It is deep underground, near the town of Qusayr and has access to electricity and water supplies, the magazine said in a pre-released version of the story released ahead of Saturday's publication.It said it had had access to "exclusive documents", satellite photographs and intercepted conversations thanks to intelligence sources.Western experts suspect, based on the documents, that a reactor or an enrichment plant could be the aim of the project, whose codename is "Zamzam", Spiegel said.The Syrian regime has transferred 8,000 fuel rods to the plant that had been planned for a facility at Al-Kibar, it added.In 2007, a bombing raid on an undeclared Syrian nuclear facility at Al-Kibar was widely understood to have been an Israeli strike, but it was never acknowledged by the Jewish state.Since then, Western intelligence agencies detected another nuclear plant in Syria, this time in a Damascus suburb.The second nuclear complex, albeit smaller, was apparently in 2011 following close analysis of satellite photos.A German newspaper, the Süddeutsche Zeitung, reported at the time that it had received the photos, but did not publish them because inferences can be made as to when they were taken, and thus to who leaked them.Spiegel said in North Korean and Iranian experts are thought to be part of the "Zamzam" project.The Lebanese terrorist group Hezbollah, which supports Assad's regime in the bloody conflict in Syria, is guarding the secret project, it added.(Arutz Sheva’s North American desk is keeping you updated until the start of Shabbat in New York. WASHINGTON (AP) — Recent satellite imagery appears to show that a North Korean submarine is being equipped to fire missiles, posing a potential new threat to its neighbors, a U.S. research institute said Thursday.The finding published by 38 North, the website of the U.S.-Korea Institute at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, comes as Washington ratchets up sanctions against North Korea following a destructive hacking attack against Sony Pictures.North Korea already has a considerable arsenal of land-based ballistic missiles. South Korea's Defense Ministry reported this week that the North may now have the ability to strike the U.S. mainland because of its progress in missile technology — although how far it has progressed remains subject of debate. The ministry also said the North is advancing in efforts to miniaturize nuclear warheads to mount on such missiles.Missiles fired from submarines could be harder to detect before launch than land-based ones, and North Korea's efforts have already gotten attention of defense officials. South Korea's military last fall said it had detected a North Korean submarine with a possible capability to launch ballistic missiles.The institute has previously reported that North Korea was building a missile-testing facility on land near a naval shipyard at the east coast site of Sinpo. Monday's analysis by Joe Bermudez, an expert on satellite imagery and North Korea's military, notes there's been an upgrading of facilities there in the past six months in what appears to be preparation for a significant naval construction program.A Dec. 18 commercial satellite image shows a submarine at dock at Sinpo with a large rectangular opening in its conning tower — the raised turret that juts vertically from the main body of the submarine. Bermudez says it could contain one or two missile launch tubes, but the image is not clear enough to deduce what type of missile.Such a capability could expand the North Korean threat to South Korea, Japan and U.S. bases in East Asia, but developing it will be expensive and time-consuming, Bermudez says.
