THE TAIL FROM QZ8501-BUT NO BLACK BOXES YET.

ABOARD KRI BANDA ACEH, Indonesia: The tail of an AirAsia plane that crashed into the Java Sea was lifted to the surface using floating balloons on Saturday (Jan 10), but apparently without the crucial black box recorders, Indonesian authorities said. The Airbus jet, carrying 162 people, went missing in stormy weather on Dec 28 as it flew from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore, and all aboard died. The tail, which is where the black box data recorders were kept, was found in the seabed 30m (100 feet) below the surface and was finally lifted on to a vessel on Saturday using giant floating balloons and a crane. "We have lifted the tail onto the ship. It's red and white and a big part of the AirAsia logo can be seen," Navy spokesman Manahan Simorangkir told AFP.On board the KRI Banda Aceh that is one of the Indonesian Navy vessels involved in the search effort, sailors cheered as the tail first emerged at the surface, according to an AFP photographer on board. The tail is the biggest part of the plane's wreckage found and could give clues to why it crashed.

UPDATES-JAN 10,15-10:00AM
channelnewsasia updates in small type-10:00AM-Indonesian authorities in Surabaya said that another two more bodies have been identified - 38-year-old Susandhini Liman (28) and 9-year-old Justin Giovanni. (29) Justin was on QZ8501 together with his brother and parents. His father's body has yet to be identified.According to a statement by AirAsia on Jan 10, to date, 29 of the 48 bodies recovered have been identified.Lead investigator Nurcayho told Channel NewsAsia that once the tail is fully salvaged, it will be checked for the black boxes before being brought by ship to Kumai Port for analysis. The black boxes are crucial to explaining the disaster as they should contain the pilots' final words as well as various flight data. However, he thinks it is unlikely the black boxes are still in the tail. It was later confirmed that the black box was not in the tail.

Part of QZ8501's tail floats on water surface, search for black box resumes-Agencies | Updated: January 10, 2015-(First published on: January 10, 2015 15:32 MYT)-astro awani

KUALA LUMPUR: Indonesian military divers have successfully lifted the tail from the crashed AirAsia QZ8501 plane from Selat Karimata near here, Kompas.com reported.AirAsia QZ8501 crashed in stormy weather, killing 162 passengers including crew on board. The portal reported that the elite divers from the Navy's KRI Banda Aceh warship explained that the giant balloon has managed to lift the plane’s remains at approximately 11.50am (local time). Soon, a faint image of the plane's tail surfaced on the ocean's water. Search efforts for the plane’s tail started on Thursday despite hindrances faced by the divers including weather, current and visibility. The search for the plane’s tail has been a paramount factor in the SAR mission as it stores the black box which contains the flight data to be used to unravel the cause of the crash.Sonar detector from Jadayat navigation vessel found that the black box had been disconnected from the plane’s tail and washed away from strong waves for 1.7 miles nautical.

UPDATES-JAN 10,15-03:00AM
channelnewsasia updates in small type-03:00AM-BREAKING: Tail of crashed #AirAsia flight #QZ8501 has been brought to the surface 3AM UPDATE: Plane tail of QZ8501 has been lifted from the sea floor, but BARSANAS says more equipment will be needed to complete the operation and bring the tail to the surface. According to CNN, the tail has surfaced above the water. PANGKALAN BUN: Indonesian military divers chased Saturday (Jan 10) faint signals believed to be from the black box data recorders of an AirAsia plane that crashed in stormy weather, killing all 162 people on board. The Airbus jet went missing on Dec 28 as it flew from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore, and the tail of the plane was found 10 days later on the floor of the Java Sea. Search efforts have since focused heavily on trying to find the black boxes, which are crucial to explaining why the plane crashed as they should contain the pilots' final words as well as various flight data.Pings from the boxes, which were stored securely in the tail, were detected on Friday, raising hopes of quickly retrieving them. But the search took another frustrating twist when authorities realised the pings were likely coming away from the tail, and the boxes appeared to be buried deep into the sea floor. Last night, our divers had opened the door of the tail cabin, searched around but found nothing," S.B Supriyadi, a director with the National Search and Rescue Agency, told AFP. "But the boat above detected faint ping sounds believed to be from the black boxes about 1.6km southeast of the tail ... and covered in mud." Supriyadi said the divers, from an elite Marines unit, returned on Saturday morning to the area believed to be where the pings were emanating from more than 30 metres (100 feet) underwater." They are searching within a radius of 500 metres from where the pings are emitted. The challenge is that these sounds are very faint. If a ship passes by, the sounds will be drowned out. So we really need calm waters," he said. "So far, our divers still have not been able to determine the coordinates of the black box."Meanwhile, a parallel operation was taking place nearby from the Indonesian Navy's KRI Banda Aceh warship to lift the tail of the plane out of the water using giant balloons. The balloons, some with a capacity to lift 35 tonnes, were to be attached to the tail, according to officials involved in the operation.American, Chinese and other foreign naval ships are also involved in the hunt for other parts of the plane's wreckage, as well as for the bodies of the passengers and crew.Just 48 bodies have been found so far, according to Indonesian authorities. All but seven of those on board were Indonesian.- AFP/by

QZ8501: Death Divers on bringing the bodies home-By Jack Board-UPDATED: 09 Jan 2015 23:25-CNA

PANGKALAN BUN, Indonesia: At Kumai Port in Central Kalimantan 10 from the specialist diving team known as SAR are poised to head out to sea, assisted by crews from the country's search and rescue agency BASARNAS.Diving teams are performing one of the most important roles of this operation. Every day they are being sent down into the murky waters to try and find any debris, bodies or even the the black box.It is an arduous task and they are being hampered by severe weather conditions – strong waves and heavy underwater currents.Rendra Hertiadhi is the team's field commander and has 30 years of diving experience.“Our job is to dive and recover bodies from the fuselage of the aircraft if it is found and also to retrieve whatever instrument like the flight data recorder if it happened that we found it near the bodies," he said.“We have to release (the bodies) from whatever is trapping them, we put them in the body bags, tied to a shoot line then float them to the surface where on the surface our guys on the boat will recover the bags and bring them to shore."The dive teams are severely affected by currents, waves and wind. The team said if the underwater current is less than five knots it is still safe for them to go down. It requires technical and tactical expertise. Recreational divers cannot generally dive in currents stronger than two knots.Reinhart Thamrin is a Disaster & Conflict specialist and explained that her team deployed in just 12 hours."We have a passion for diving and we are willing to help," she said. "The government calls us and we come."The team will operate for seven to 10 days before being replaced by their 'beta team'.- CNA/dl/el
