My family is now mourning," said Angela Anggi Ranastianis, 22. "As a daughter, I cannot accept it. No pilot will harm his passengers," she said. 7.18PM: AirAsia has downplayed an incident that saw one of its planes turn back before take-off in Indonesia. Flight 7633 was taxiing in preparation for take-off on Saturday at Surabaya airport – where crashed flight QZ8501 also took off – when a power unit used to start the plane shut down, an airline official said. As a result, the pilot turned back to the gate.Local media had reported the Bandung-bound plane's engine had cut out after emitting a loud bang that terrified passengers. The plane later landed safely at its destination after undergoing a check.AirAsia boss Tony Fernandes has lashed out at the media reports, calling the headlines "silly". 7.45PM: Captain Ryan Tan, a Super Puma pilot, explains how the Singapore team is conducting the search operations for AirAsia flight ‪‎QZ8501‬, while operating off the RSS Persistence. The unpredictable weather has been challenging for the team, resulting in limited launch windows for them to carry out the search, he says. When we spot anything during one of our sorties, we would report it back to the ship for further instructions and the Aircrew Specialist will drop the marine markers to mark the location for the subsequent recovery crew.”- CPT Ryan Tan, a Super Puma pilot, explaining how they are conducting the search operations for AirAsia flight ‪#‎QZ8501‬, while operating off the Republic of Singapore Navy's RSS Persistence. 7.49PM: The search sector has expanded eastward due to the direction of the current, according to Malaysia's Chief of Navy Abdul Aziz Jaafar.#QZ8501 Day 9: Search sector expanded eastward, in view of d easterly direction of the current at d rate of 1 knot.

channelnewsasia updates in small type-2.14AM: An adult life jacket and three personal items believed to be from the wreckage of AirAsia flight QZ8501 picked up by the crew of the RSS Valour, was brought on board the MV Swift Rescue on Sunday at 1.15am. The items will be handed over to Indonesian authorities, according to a TODAY reporter. 2.41AM: Singapore's MV Swift Rescue has commenced search in a new sector at 2.45am on Sunday, after completing its last search sector. Visibility in the new sector is about 1 nautical mile, and the sea state and weather remain unfavourable for underwater search operations, according to TODAY reporter Raj Nadarajan, who is on board the navy ship. 3.13AM: An aircraft life raft of about 6m by 3m was spotted by Singapore’s RSS Persistence this morning. It took close to 20 men to retrieve it, says our field reporter Lam Shushan. The Indonesian authorities have been informed and arrangements will be made to deliver the life raft to them. No sorties were made on the Super Pumas today. 3.22AM: The US embassy in Indonesia issued a security alert for Surabaya yesterday, warning of potential threats against US-associated hotels and banks in the city. The mayor of Surabaya tells Channel NewsAsia's Sumisha Naidu that she believes this is a separate issue unrelated to the #QZ8501 incident. 3.55AM:  Indonesia authorities say three more bodies have been identified and returned to their families. They are: 24-year-old AirAsia flight attendant Wismoyo Ari Prambudi, 10-year-old passenger Jie Stevie Gunawan, and 30-year-old Juanita Limantara.#QZ8501: Families waiting to receive bodies recently identified. The cousin of the 10-year-old girl told Channel NewsAsia's Sumisha Naidu that the child was travelling with her family, and that she hopes the rest of the family members will be identified soon. 4.42AM: Four bodies were recovered today - three by USS Sampson, and one by Singapore's RSS Persistence. This means the total number of bodies retrieved is now 34. 5.13AM: Indonesia's Metro TV reports that an AirAsia plane at Surabaya airport experienced engine problems before take-off, and passengers were asked to disembark. 6AM: This Russian amphibious plane - a BE-200 - is part of the search efforts, and has a special sonar and acoustic system that can detect beacons from black boxes. Our digital producer Xabryna Kek takes a look inside the plane. 6.30AM: The RSS Persistence recovered one body this morning, as well as aircraft debris. Singapore's Super Puma helicopter has delivered the body and the debris to Pangkalan Bun airport. 7.12AM: The aircraft life raft recovered by the RSS Persistence today took close to 20 men to retrieve, Channel NewsAsia's Lam Shushan reports from the navy vessel. 8.20AM: In addition to the RSS Persistence, Remotely Operated Vehicles on Singapore's RSS Kallang and MV Swift Rescue were also deployed in the search today. Besides recovering one body, Singapore teams also retrieved aircraft equipment and debris, says MINDEF. 8.30AM: In a press conference, Indonesia's BASARNAS chief says the debris found so far indicates that the body of the plane is broken, and all search efforts will be focused on locating the tail of the plane, as that is where the black box is.Bad weather resulted in the Russian amphibious plane that joined the search turning back today, but divers will be sent tomorrow to where where five "big objects" have been sighted, when weather conditions are expected to improve. It is believed that the black box is not far from these objects, the chief says.Five ships equipped with the capabilities to locate the black box are already in these locations, and Indonesia is considering China's offer to send a ship to join the hunt for the black box. "Time is of the essence," he says, as currents are already shifting debris east-wards and bodies have started to decompose, which will make identification difficult.

Ice may have caused AirAsia crash: Indonesia govt agency-UPDATED: 04 Jan 2015 10:49-Channel NewsAsia

'I couldn't see anything': Storms hampering QZ8501 search efforts, says Indonesian helicopter pilot
Indonesia's meteorological agency said the weather was a "triggering factor" in the crash of AirAsia flight QZ8501, adding that the plane appeared to have flown into storm clouds.JAKARTA: Weather was the "triggering factor" in the fatal crash of AirAsia flight QZ8501 a week ago, with icing likely causing engine damage, according to Indonesia's meteorological agency. The Airbus A320-200 crashed during a storm en route from the Indonesian city Surabaya to Singapore, and relief workers are hunting for flight data recorders to determine the cause of the crash. But an initial report on the website of BMKG, Indonesia's meteorological agency, suggests the weather at the time the plane went down sparked the disaster after it appeared to fly into storm clouds."Based on the available data received on the location of the aircraft's last contact, the weather was the triggering factor behind the accident," said the report. "The most probable weather phenomenon was icing which can cause engine damage due to a cooling process. This is just one of the possibilities that occurred based on the analysis of existing meteorological data.”Before take-off, the pilot of flight QZ8501 had asked for permission to fly at a higher altitude to avoid the storm, but the request was not approved due to other planes above him on the popular route, according to AirNav, Indonesia's air traffic control. In his last communication, Captain Iriyanto, an experienced former air force pilot, said he wanted to change course to avoid the menacing storm system. Then all contact was lost, about 40 minutes after the plane had taken off.Major parts of the Airbus A320-200 were found in the sea off the island of Borneo late Friday and Saturday, raising hopes that the remaining bodies and the crucial "black box" recorders would soon be located. So far 30 bodies have been found.High seas throughout the week have hampered the relief process, a huge operation assisted by several countries including the United States and Russia, but divers were preparing to go down to the wreckage Sunday as the weather cleared."The waves are calmer, only one to two metres high," search and rescue official S B Supriyadi told AFP, adding that 95 divers were on standby on various ships. "We'll be concentrating on the underwater search, hopefully we'll be able to evacuate more bodies. We want to speed up the evacuation of bodies which might be stuck inside the plane.”He said they would be using sonar equipment in their underwater searches, while aircraft would continue to scour the sea and coastline.Indonesia has pledged to investigate flight violations by AirAsia, saying the ill-fated aircraft had been flying on an unauthorised schedule when it crashed. The airline has now been suspended from flying the Surabaya-Singapore route. The transport ministry said AirAsia Indonesia had not been permitted to fly the route on Sundays and had not asked to change its schedule, but the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore said it had granted permission for the airline's Sunday flight. It was unclear how the airline, a unit of Malaysia-based AirAsia, had been able to fly without the necessary authorisation from its starting point. The company has declined to comment until the probe is complete, but said it would "fully cooperate" with the government.Of the 162 passengers and crew on board, 155 were Indonesian, with three South Koreans, one Singaporean, one Malaysian, one Briton and a Frenchman - co-pilot Remi Plesel.- AFP/xq

AirAsia QZ8501: Another body, large object found in search operation-UPDATED: 04 Jan 2015 13:18-Channel NewsAsia

ON BOARD RSS PERSISTENCE: One more body was found and recovered on Sunday (Jan 4) in the search operation for AirAsia flight QZ8501, which went missing last Sunday. The body was spotted by personnel on RSS Persistence at 7.58am and recovered on board the ship at 8.46am, said Singapore’s Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) in a statement. The body was found within the Republic of Singapore Navy’s designated search area in the Java Sea.It is not clear yet if the victim was a male or female, according to a Channel NewsAsia reporter on board RSS Persistence. The Indonesian authorities have been informed and the body will be flown to Pangkalan Bun, said MINDEF.The plane went down with 162 people on board, and 31 bodies have been recovered so far.

FIFTH LARGE OBJECT SPOTTED

Meanwhile, Indonesia’s national search and rescue agency BASARNAS said a fifth large object was discovered underwater on Sunday morning. It measured about 9.8 x 1.1 x 0.4 metres, it added. Search teams had found four large parts of the aircraft on Saturday. At a news conference on Sunday, BASARNAS also said dives have been temporarily suspended due to bad weather, and a remotely operated underwater vehicle has been sent to the search site. There are 17 Russian divers with unmanned submersibles at the search area too, it added. There were 20 aircraft and 27 ships deployed in total on Sunday combing the waters for the victims and wreckage, the agency said.- CNA/xq

Indonesia deploys controversial KRI Usman Harun for AirAsia plane search-POSTED: 04 Jan 2015 10:41-channel newsAsia

SINGAPORE: Indonesia on Sunday (Jan 4) deployed the controversial KRI Usman Harun to aid in the search for the missing AirAsia QZ8501 plane, as it is equipped with advanced underwater sonar capabilities, according to Indonesia's Metro TV and Republika. Both media outlets reported that the Bung Tomo-class corvette was deployed on Sunday, with Republika adding that it was equipped with the Thales Underwater Systems TMS 4130C1 hull-mounted sonar. The naming of the ship after the MacDonald House bombers, Usman Mohamed Ali and Harun Said, caused tensions between Singapore and Indonesia in February last year, with the Singapore Government sending a Third Person Note, which is a formal diplomatic note, to its Indonesian counterparts to register its regret.Singapore’s Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen added in Parliament in February that the Republic would not allow the Indonesian warship, named after the MacDonald House bombers, to call at its ports and naval bases. The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) would not be carrying out military exercises with the naval vessel too, he said. This is because allowing the ship to sail “would unearth all the pain and sorrow caused by the MacDonald House bomb blast, which had been buried and put to rest”, Dr Ng said then.Three people were killed and 33 others injured when the two Indonesian marines bombed the building in 1965. The two marines were subsequently found guilty and hanged in 1968, despite the intervention of then Indonesian president Suharto.- CNA/kk

Search for AirAsia QZ8501: Men on the frontline-By Xabryna Kek-UPDATED: 04 Jan 2015 00:23-Channel Newsasia

Channel NewsAsia spoke to two members of Indonesia's national search and recovery agency, BASARNAS, who have been rappelling from helicopters amid high winds and choppy seas to retrieve bodies from the doomed AirAsia jet QZ5801.PANGKALAN BUN: After facing week-long driving rain and high winds at sea, men on the frontline of the search and recovery operation for AirAsia QZ8501 were finally greeted by clear skies on Saturday (Jan 3).They made the most of it, expediting the retrieval process and sending 12 bodies home to Surabaya - the biggest batch so far. Thirty bodies have been retrieved over a week, meaning nearly a fifth of the 162 people on board have been accounted for.Two men from BASARNAS, Indonesia's national search and recovery agency, told Channel NewsAsia the weather plays a major factor in the success of their mission.Second Sergeant (2SG) Mahmud Junianto was first from his organisation to attempt to retrieve an AirAsia casualty from the Java Sea off Kalimantan coast. On Tuesday at around 1pm, 2SG Mahmud said he was instructed by a pilot to retrieve what appeared to be debris from the sea.He rappelled 25 metres down from a helicopter and caught sight of what looked like an exit door of the plane. Upon closer inspection, he realised it was woman's floating body.2SG Mahmud tried to swim to it, but extreme weather conditions, and waves of up to 2 to 3m foiled his attempts.“My first reaction was to quickly evacuate the body,” said 2SG Mahmud. “I am sorry that I failed to bring her back to the shore, but I have tried my best.” He said that in BASARNAS, they always strive for efficiency, accuracy and safety, and in that situation, his own safety would have been compromised. An Indonesian warship retrieved the body shortly after, he said.2SG Mahmud said he had been through similar drills before in his four years with BASARNAS, but nothing comes close to this. Still, he promised the search for more casualties would go on in rough weather.A total of five BARSARNAS personnel – a pilot, co-pilot, and three divers – are on board each helicopter sent out, said another diver, Second Sergeant Akhyar. For each run they make, it takes about an hour for them to travel from Iskandar airport to the search location. The grim task of retrieving a body from the sea takes approximately half an hour.2SG Akhyar said he hopes relatives of the people on QZ8501 will remain strong during this trying period. “Sorry for this incident,” he said. “We do not know what will happen next, but please be patient."BARSARNAS has been working with personnel from seven countries since the AirAsia crash last Sunday, including Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea and the US. A total of 60 ships, 11 helicopters and eight aircraft were involved in the search and recovery operations on Saturday.- CNA/ly

QZ8501: Indonesia SAR chief says four large parts of jet found-3 January 2015 @ 8:42 PM-New Straits Times online

JAKARTA: Search teams hunting for the wreck of Indonesia AirAsia passenger jet that crashed with 162 people on board have found four large parts of the plane on the sea bed, the head of Indonesia's search and rescue agency said today.A multi-national task force of ships, planes and helicopters have been scouring the northern Java Sea and coastline of southern Borneo to recover the bodies of victims and locate the wreck of Flight QZ8501 and its black box flight recorders."We've found four big parts from the plane we're looking for," search and rescue agency chief Fransiskus Bambang Soelistyo told reporters in Jakarta. The break through came as authorities said that Indonesia AirAsia had violated the terms of its licence for the Surabaya to Singapore route by flying on a Sunday, the day the Airbus A320-200 plunged into the Java Sea, and announced they would investigate the carrier's other schedules. One large object was pinpointed by a ship searching during the night, Soelistyo said, and three more, the largest of which was around 18 metres long, were located toay.Another official, Supriyadi, who is coordinating the operation from the port of Pangkalan Bun in Borneo, said earlier that poor visibility had hampered efforts to capture images of the objects with underwater remote operating vehicles (ROVs)."The visibility is only two metres," he said. "It's cloudy, making it difficult for the cameras to detect."Divers, including a team of Russian specialists who just arrived in Pangkalan Bun, may be able to investigate the suspected wreckage on Sunday if the weather improves, officials said.

NO SURVIVORS

No survivors have been found from the crash, which happened about 40 minutes after the plane took off from Indonesia's second largest city in an area known for intense tropical thunderstorms during the current monsoon season.A report from Indonesia's weather bureau said it was likely the plane had flown into bad weather which would have been difficult to avoid, and that it was possible this had caused ice to form on its engines."Based on the available data on the last received location of the aircraft, the weather was a factor in causing the accident," the weather bureau said.Indonesian authorities on Friday questioned whether the pilot had followed correct weather procedures, and later suspended Indonesia AirAsia's Surabaya to Singapore flights, saying the airline's operating licence only permitted flights on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.Djoko Murdjatmodjo, Indonesia's acting Director General of Air Transportation, said today that the Transport Ministry would investigate other routes used by the carrier, which flies from at least 15 Indonesian destinations."We are going to investigate all AirAsia flight schedules. Hopefully we can start on next Monday," he said. "It is possible AirAsia's licence in Indonesia might be revoked," he added.Sunu Widyatmoko, Indonesia AirAsia chief, told reporters the airline, which is 49-percent owned by Malaysia- based AirAsia , would cooperate with the inquiry."The government has suspended our flights from Surabaya to Singapore and back," he said. "They are doing the evaluation process. AirAsia will cooperate fully with the evaluation."Much effort has focused on finding the mostly Indonesian victims of the crash. Thirty bodies have been recovered from the sea, although rescue official Supriyadi, who like many Indonesians uses just one name, said it was unlikely more would be found floating."Because we're already in the seventh day ... the chances are they have all sunk," he said. "There's a possibility they'll be found on beaches."Small pieces of the aircraft and other debris have also been found, but there has been no sign of the crucial voice and flight data recorders - the so-called black boxes that investigators hope will unravel the sequence of events in the cockpit during the doomed jet's final minutes.

WEATHER FACTOR

The cause of the crash, the first fatal accident suffered by the AirAsia group, remains unexplained. The plane was flying at 32,000 ft (9,753 metres) and the pilot had asked to climb to 38,000 ft just before contact was lost. When air traffic controllers granted permission to fly at 34,000 ft a few minutes later there was no response.A source close to the investigation said radar data appeared to show the aircraft made an "unbelievably" steep climb before it crashed, possibly pushing it beyond the A320's limits.Hadi Mustofa Djuraid, a transport ministry official, told reporters on Friday that authorities were also investigating the possibility that the pilot did not ask for a weather report from the meteorological agency at the time of take-off.Indonesia AirAsia said in a statement that weather reports were printed in hard copy at the operations control centre at all its flight hubs, including Surabaya, and taken by the pilot to the aircraft before each flight. An AirAsia spokeswoman declined to comment on whether the pilot had followed the procedure described in the statement.--REUTERS
