WHO: 780 monkeypox cases in non-endemic countries, but global risk level moderate-International health body says figure of confirmed cases is probably an undercount due to limited laboratory resources; few hospitalizations apart from those isolating-By AFP-jun 5,22-Today, 8:03 pm

GENEVA — The World Health Organization said Sunday that 780 laboratory-confirmed monkeypox cases had been reported to it from 27 non-endemic countries, while maintaining that the global risk level was moderate. The WHO said the 780 figure, for cases from May 13 to Thursday, was probably an underestimate due to limited epidemiological and laboratory information.“It is highly likely that other countries will identify cases and there will be further spread of the virus,” the UN health agency added.Few hospitalizations have been reported, apart from patients being isolated. The WHO listed the non-endemic countries reporting the most cases as Britain (207), Spain (156), Portugal (138), Canada (58) and Germany (57). The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said Friday it was aware of 21 cases in the United States, with investigations now suggesting it is spreading inside the country.Besides Europe and North America, cases have also been reported — in single figures — in Israel, Argentina, Australia, Morocco and the United Arab Emirates. One case of monkeypox in a non-endemic country is considered an outbreak.“Some countries are reporting that new generations of cases are no longer appearing only among known contacts of previously confirmed cases, suggesting that chains of transmission are being missed through undetected circulation of the virus,” the WHO said.“Although the current risk to human health and for the general public remains low, the public health risk could become high if this virus exploits the opportunity to establish itself in non-endemic countries as a widespread human pathogen,” it said in a disease outbreak update.“WHO assesses the risk at the global level as moderate considering this is the first time that many monkeypox cases and clusters are reported concurrently in non-endemic and endemic countries.”Atypical cases-Most reported cases so far have been presented through sexual health or other health services and have mainly involved men who have sex with men, said the WHO.The organization said many cases were not presenting with the classical clinical picture for monkeypox: some have described having pustules appear before symptoms such as fever, and having lesions at different stages of development — both of which are atypical. The WHO said there had been no deaths associated with outbreaks in non-endemic countries, but cases and deaths continue to be reported from endemic areas. The WHO listed the endemic states as Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Congo-Brazzaville, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Liberia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Gabon and Ivory Coast, plus Ghana where it has been identified in animals only. From the first seven of those countries, 66 deaths were reported in the first five months of 2022.Last week, the WHO convened virtually more than 500 experts and over 2,000 participants to discuss monkeypox knowledge gaps and research priorities.Experts stressed the need for clinical studies of vaccines and treatments to better understand their effectiveness, and called for faster research into the disease epidemiology and transmission.

'Kibbutz identity and Jewish identity are strengthened' On the kibbutz, Shavuot is a time for remembering the movement’s glory days-The biblical harvest festival resonates with the agricultural collectives’ largely secular residents and offers an opportunity for pageants, concerts, fairs and other celebrations-By Hillel Kuttler-jun 5,22-Today, 3:29 pm

KIBBUTZ GINEGAR, Israel (JTA) — As the song “Golden Youth” by kibbutz folk band Gevatron played in an outdoor alcove beneath this farm village’s community center on Wednesday afternoon, choreographer Tamar Danin, 15, gently instructed her charges — a dozen girls, ages 9-13 — on the stretches and tambourine tapping they will be doing at a performance Saturday evening to open the Shavuot holiday. The dance will be one of eight presented by various age groups, including parents with their babies, at a cultural event expected to draw 500 people. The audience will sit outdoors and gaze south across the expansive Jezreel Valley, dubbed The Breadbasket of Israel for its many kibbutz and moshav communities, including some of the country’s oldest. Ginegar, which relocated to this fertile region 100 years ago, produces grapefruits, mandarin oranges, olives, cotton, corn, wheat, barley, sorghum, tomatoes, watermelons and avocados.Shavuot, a biblical festival celebrating the first fruits and grains of the spring harvest, is the most widely celebrated holiday at Israel’s communal farms, the vast majority of them not religiously oriented.Communal Shavuot celebrations on a kibbutz generally feature dance performances and parades of residents representing each of the community’s departments. Children and adults carry wicker baskets recreating the biblical harvest offerings. On Shavuot, “the kibbutz identity, especially Jewish identity, is strengthened,” said Ayelet Glass, the society and community department director at the Kibbutz Movement and a resident of Kibbutz Palmachim along the Mediterranean Sea.The holiday resonates deeply despite the economic and social crises that rocked the kibbutz movement in the 1980s and ’90s and prompted radical shifts, such as privatization. A movement based on collective principles began allowing people to keep their outside income; closed communal dining rooms, child-rearing and foreign-volunteer programs; and welcomed outsiders to build homes on the grounds without becoming members.Approximately 190,000 people — just 63,000 of them kibbutz members — now reside in the 248 agricultural villages, said Roi Shabtai, a spokesman for the Kibbutz Movement, which represents 230 of the communities.Kibbutz residents say that Shavuot celebrations endure by evoking simpler times and appealing to people seeking communal ties in an era of increased individualism.Elsewhere in Israel, observant families connect with the holiday’s celebration of the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai by learning religious texts throughout the night. Traditional and even secular families gather for dairy meals featuring lasagna, cheese blintzes and cheesecake, in a nod to ancient Israelites’ abstaining from meat after receiving the Torah.Danin, the choreographer, said her friends visit here every Shavuot out of a desire to witness a spectacle absent from their cities and towns.“They think it’s only a holiday of dairy and cheese,“ she said. “They’re looking for something different to do.”While Ginegar’s hour-long event remains fairly consistent from year to year, new elements keep it fresh. This Shavuot will feature a concert stage and a plaza lined with kiosks selling homemade foods, fresh juice and snacks. The street fair set-up aims to encourage socializing amongst veteran residents, nonmember residents and visitors from the region and beyond. Light aircraft normally used for fumigating fields will be used for skywriting and aerial stunts.Israelis seen at a celebration for the Jewish holiday of Shavuot in Kibbutz Sarid, in Emek Yizrael on June 8, 2019. (Anat Hermony/Flash90)Several of the additions were introduced by Shimrit Gershon, Ginegar’s cultural coordinator. Gershon moved here with her husband and children 13 years ago and built a home in a new neighborhood dubbed The Expanse — a nickname also employed at other kibbutzes — where nonmembers live. Their homes tend to stand out from the kibbutz’s smaller, older buildings. While some outsiders, including her neighbors, enjoy the pastoral setting but don’t partake in the communal — some say insular — life of the kibbutz, Gershon says she preferred investing in the community.“I wanted to fit in, to belong. It’s good to feel connected to something, and it’s fun to meet people of different ages, types and characters,” she said.Dancers at the afternoon rehearsal included Gershon’s 12-year-old daughter, Orr. Of the Shavuot event, in which she also participated last year, Orr Gershon said, “I like the atmosphere, the people, the field” setting and the white costume with pink sash she’ll be wearing.Nonmembers like Gershon offer hope for preserving kibbutzes as cohesive communities, if not socialist enclaves. So, too, do the young people raised on them who moved to urban areas following their army service but increasingly are drawn back to the nurturing surroundings to raise their families. Both groups will be vital to replenish an aging population and to inject new energy.Even newer terminology indicates a more welcoming attitude, such as the “members with economic autonomy” category for residents of The Expanse.Maria Sela, 49, who immigrated from Sweden in 1993 and became a full-fledged member through her husband, Ginegar native Oded, estimated that fewer than 150 of the kibbutz’s 800 residents are members. Eighty percent of the 150, she said, are over age 70.“The Expanse made a huge difference,” said Sela of the neighborhood’s 300 residents. Other kibbutz residents include college students and females performing community service in lieu of military conscription. Some of the veteran kibbutzniks remain plenty vibrant.Dan Eick had just finished an adults-only Shavuot rehearsal late Wednesday night comprising people from their 40s to 70s. The half-hour gathering took place at the kibbutz’s outdoor basketball court. That’s where the Shavuot gatherings were held until they outgrew the site in recent years and moved to the field.Ginegar has seen communal celebrations come and go. Jerusalem Day events petered out, and Gershon expects commemorations of Yitzhak Rabin’s assassination to soon cease, too. Even Passover gatherings fell by the wayside, but they’ve come back, with this year’s Seder drawing 300 people.Shavuot celebrations aren’t going anywhere, Eick believes. A retired accountant, he was born in Ginegar and has lived only here, but his three sons and eight grandchildren reside elsewhere. All will drive to the kibbutz for the holiday.Eick, 75, expects his younger sons to do what they always do: playfully push their eldest brother, Ido, 49, to return home to live.“They want him to replace us when our souls return to the Creator so as to preserve their connection to the kibbutz so they can continue to visit,” Eick said.He considers a question about whether Ido is likely to comply.“I won’t be here to certify it,” Eick said, “but I think so.”

Lebanon warns against drilling in offshore field as gas rig reaches Israeli waters-Lebanese President Michel Aoun says any activity by Israel in Karish field, which is claimed by Beirut, will be a ‘hostile act’-By TOI staff-JUN 5,22-Today, 7:06 pm

Lebanese President Michel Aoun on Sunday warned Israel against drilling in an offshore natural gas field claimed by Beirut as the drilling rig entered Israeli waters.Aoun’s office said the president discussed the matter with Prime Minister Najib Mikati and asked army leadership to keep him updated on the rig, which is operated by Greek energy firm Energean. It also noted ongoing US-mediated talks aimed at settling the maritime border dispute between Lebanon and Israel.“Any action or activity in the disputed area represents a provocation and a hostile act,” the presidency said.According to Reuters, Mikati accused Israel of “encroaching on Lebanon’s maritime wealth, and imposing a fait accompli in a disputed area.” He called the Israeli move “extremely dangerous.”“The decision about a response [to the ship’s entry] is in the hands of the state and Hezbollah,” Bassam Yasin, the head of the Lebanese delegation to the negotiations, was quoted saying by the Kan public broadcaster.Longtime foes Israel and Lebanon have held talks over the past year aimed at demarcating offshore exclusive economic zones. The disputed area, hundreds of square miles wide, is thought to contain large deposits of natural gas, a potential game-changer for Lebanon, which is mired in a devastating economic crisis. The Hezbollah terror group has warned Israel against unilaterally searching for natural gas in the disputed maritime region before any agreement is reached. The negotiations are meant to focus on an 860-square-kilometer (330-square-mile) disputed sea area according to a map registered with the United Nations in 2011.But in 2020, Lebanon demanded an additional area of 1,430 square kilometers further south, Lebanese energy expert Laury Haytayan said, characterizing the new phase of talks as a “war of the maps.”The additional area extends into part of the Karish gas field which Israel has assigned Energean, which was expected to begin pumping gas to the Israeli domestic market last year. Karish, Hebrew for shark, contains 1.4 trillion cubic feet of proved and probable gas.UN military vehicles of the United Nations Interim Forces in Lebanon (UNIFIL) enter the southern Lebanese border town of Naqoura, where the second round of talks started on October 28, 2020, between Lebanon and Israel at a UN base on the demarcation of the maritime frontier between the two countries. (Mahmoud Zayyat/AFP)-Lebanon’s foreign minister responded positively in February to proposals from US negotiator Amos Hochstein on settling a maritime border dispute with Israel, as Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah reportedly gave a green light to continue negotiations. However, Nasrallah expressed fierce opposition to the US-mediated talks last month, appearing to contradict the earlier reports. The area around Karish also includes a prospect known as Block 72,  which is thought to also contain large hydrocarbon deposits. In June 2019, the Israeli government gave US-based Noble Energy the go-ahead to carry out exploratory drilling there, though development of the field has reportedly been hampered by worries over its fate in the dispute with Lebanon.Israel and Lebanon have no diplomatic relations and are technically in a state of war.Agencies contributed to this report.

EZEKIEL 38:1-23
1 And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
2  Son of man, set thy face against Gog, the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him,
3  And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal:
4  And I will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws, and I will bring thee forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed with all sorts of armour, even a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords:
5  Persia,(IRAN,IRAQ) Ethiopia, and Libya with them; all of them with shield and helmet:
6  Gomer,(GERMANY) and all his bands; the house of Togarmah (TURKEY) of the north quarters, and all his bands: and many people with thee.(AFRICAN MUSLIMS,SUDAN,TUNESIA ETC)
7  Be thou prepared, and prepare for thyself, thou, and all thy company that are assembled unto thee, and be thou a guard unto them.
8  After many days thou shalt be visited: in the latter years thou shalt come into the land that is brought back from the sword, and is gathered out of many people, against the mountains of Israel, which have been always waste: but it is brought forth out of the nations, and they shall dwell safely all of them.
9  Thou shalt ascend and come like a storm, thou shalt be like a cloud to cover the land, thou, and all thy bands, and many people with thee.
10  Thus saith the Lord GOD; It shall also come to pass, that at the same time shall things come into thy mind, and thou shalt think an evil thought:
11  And thou shalt say, I will go up to the land of unwalled villages; I will go to them that are at rest, that dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates,
12  To take a spoil, and to take a prey; to turn thine hand upon the desolate places that are now inhabited, and upon the people that are gathered out of the nations, which have gotten cattle and goods, that dwell in the midst of the land.
13  Sheba, and Dedan, and the merchants of Tarshish, with all the young lions thereof, shall say unto thee, Art thou come to take a spoil? hast thou gathered thy company to take a prey? to carry away silver and gold, to take away cattle and goods, to take a great spoil?(OIL IS IN SPOIL-I BELIEVE THATS WHY RUSSIA,ARAB/MUSLIMS MARCH TO ISRAEL)
14  Therefore, son of man, prophesy and say unto Gog, Thus saith the Lord GOD; In that day when my people of Israel dwelleth safely, shalt thou not know it?
15  And thou shalt come from thy place out of the north parts, thou, and many people with thee, all of them riding upon horses, a great company, and a mighty army:
16  And thou shalt come up against my people of Israel, as a cloud to cover the land; it shall be in the latter days, and I will bring thee against my land, that the heathen may know me, when I shall be sanctified in thee, O Gog, before their eyes.
17  Thus saith the Lord GOD; Art thou he of whom I have spoken in old time by my servants the prophets of Israel, which prophesied in those days many years that I would bring thee against them?
18  And it shall come to pass at the same time when Gog shall come against the land of Israel, saith the Lord GOD, that my fury shall come up in my face.
19  For in my jealousy and in the fire (atomic bomb) of my wrath have I spoken, Surely in that day there shall be a great shaking in the land of Israel;
20  So that the fishes of the sea, and the fowls of the heaven, and the beasts of the field, and all creeping things that creep upon the earth, and all the men that are upon the face of the earth, shall shake at my presence, and the mountains shall be thrown down, and the steep places shall fall, and every wall shall fall to the ground.
21  And I will call for a sword against him throughout all my mountains, saith the Lord GOD: every man’s sword shall be against his brother.
22  And I will plead against him with pestilence (biological, chemical, nuclear) and with blood; and I will rain upon him, and upon his bands, and upon the many people that are with him, an overflowing rain, and great hailstones, fire, and brimstone.(NUKED,THEN MIGRATING BIRDS EAT RUSSIA/ARAB/MUSLIMS FLESH)
23  Thus will I magnify myself, and sanctify myself; and I will be known in the eyes of many nations, and they shall know that I am the LORD.

EZEKIEL 39:1-29
1 Therefore, thou son of man, prophesy against Gog, and say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal:
2  And I will turn thee back, and leave but the sixth part of thee,(300 MILIION RUSSIA-ARAB-MUSLIMS GET NUKED BY ISRAEL) and will cause thee to come up from the north parts, and will bring thee upon the mountains of Israel:
3  And I will smite thy bow out of thy left hand, and will cause thine arrows to fall out of thy right hand.
4  Thou shalt fall upon the mountains of Israel, thou,(RUSSIA) and all thy bands,(RUSSIA SUPPORTED WITH WEAPONS-ARAB/MUSLIM COUNTRIES) and the people that is with thee: I will give thee unto the ravenous birds of every sort, and to the beasts of the field to be devoured.
5  Thou shalt fall upon the open field: for I have spoken it, saith the Lord GOD.
6  And I will send a fire (ATOMIC BOMB) on Magog, and among them that dwell carelessly in the isles: and they shall know that I am the LORD.
7  So will I make my holy name known in the midst of my people Israel; and I will not let them pollute my holy name any more: and the heathen shall know that I am the LORD, the Holy One in Israel.
8  Behold, it is come, and it is done, saith the Lord GOD; this is the day whereof I have spoken.
9  And they that dwell in the cities of Israel shall go forth, and shall set on fire and burn the weapons, both the shields and the bucklers, the bows and the arrows, and the handstaves, and the spears, and they shall burn them with fire seven years:
10  So that they shall take no wood out of the field, neither cut down any out of the forests; for they shall burn the weapons with fire: and they shall spoil those that spoiled them, and rob those that robbed them, saith the Lord GOD.
11  And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will give unto Gog a place there of graves in Israel, the valley of the passengers on the east of the sea: and it shall stop the noses of the passengers: and there shall they bury Gog and all his multitude: and they shall call it The valley of Hamongog.
12  And seven months shall the house of Israel be burying of them, that they may cleanse the land.
13  Yea, all the people of the land shall bury them; and it shall be to them a renown the day that I shall be glorified, saith the Lord GOD.
14  And they shall sever out men of continual employment, passing through the land to bury with the passengers those that remain upon the face of the earth, to cleanse it: after the end of seven months shall they search.
15  And the passengers that pass through the land, when any seeth a man’s bone, then shall he set up a sign by it, till the buriers have buried it in the valley of Hamongog.
16  And also the name of the city shall be Hamonah. Thus shall they cleanse the land.
17  And, thou son of man, thus saith the Lord GOD; Speak unto every feathered fowl, and to every beast of the field, Assemble yourselves, and come; gather yourselves on every side to my sacrifice that I do sacrifice for you, even a great sacrifice upon the mountains of Israel, that ye may eat flesh, and drink blood.
18  Ye shall eat the flesh of the mighty, and drink the blood of the princes of the earth, of rams, of lambs, and of goats, of bullocks, all of them fatlings of Bashan.
19  And ye shall eat fat till ye be full, and drink blood till ye be drunken, of my sacrifice which I have sacrificed for you.
20  Thus ye shall be filled at my table with horses and chariots, with mighty men, and with all men of war, saith the Lord GOD.
21  And I will set my glory among the heathen, and all the heathen shall see my judgment that I have executed, and my hand that I have laid upon them.
22  So the house of Israel shall know that I am the LORD their God from that day and forward.
23  And the heathen shall know that the house of Israel went into captivity for their iniquity: because they trespassed against me, therefore hid I my face from them, and gave them into the hand of their enemies: so fell they all by the sword.
24  According to their uncleanness and according to their transgressions have I done unto them, and hid my face from them.
25  Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Now will I bring again the captivity of Jacob, and have mercy upon the whole house of Israel, and will be jealous for my holy name;
26  After that they have borne their shame, and all their trespasses whereby they have trespassed against me, when they dwelt safely in their land, and none made them afraid.
27  When I have brought them again from the people, and gathered them out of their enemies’ lands, and am sanctified in them in the sight of many nations;
28  Then shall they know that I am the LORD their God, which caused them to be led into captivity among the heathen: but I have gathered them unto their own land, and have left none of them any more there.
29  Neither will I hide my face any more from them: for I have poured out my spirit upon the house of Israel, saith the Lord GOD.

North Korea test-fires salvo of short-range missiles-Pyongyang’s 18th round of missile tests this year come a day after US aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan concludes naval drill with South Korea-By AP-JAN 5,22-Today, 5:28 am

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea test-fired a salvo of eight short-range ballistic missiles toward the sea on Sunday, South Korea’s military said, extending a provocative streak in weapons demonstrations this year that US and South Korean officials say may culminate with a nuclear test explosion.South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said the missiles were fired in succession over 35 minutes from the Sunan area near the capital, Pyongyang. It didn’t immediately say how far the missiles flew but noted the South Korean military has heightened its monitoring in case the North fires more missiles. The launch came a day after the US aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan concluded a three-day naval drill with South Korea in the Philippine Sea, apparently their first joint drill involving a carrier since November 2017, as the countries move to upgrade their defense exercises in the face of growing North Korean threats. The launch was North Korea’s 18th round of missile tests in 2022 alone — a streak that has included the country’s first demonstrations of intercontinental ballistic missiles in nearly five years — as it continues to exploit a favorable environment to push forward weapons development with the U.N. Security Council divided over Russia’s war on Ukraine.Experts say North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s brinkmanship is aimed at forcing the United States to accept the idea of the North as a nuclear power and negotiating economic and security concessions from a position of strength.South Korean and US officials say there are signs that North Korea is also pressing ahead with preparations at its nuclear testing ground in the northeastern town of Punggye-ri. The North’s next nuclear test would be its seventh since 2006 and the first since September 2017, when it claimed to have detonated a thermonuclear bomb to fit on its ICBMs.On Friday, US President Joe Biden’s special envoy for North Korea, Sung Kim, said Washington is “preparing for all contingencies” in close coordination with its Asian allies as he participated in a trilateral meeting in Seoul with his South Korean and Japanese counterparts over the nuclear standoff with North Korea. The United States has vowed to push for additional international sanctions if North Korea conducts a new nuclear test, but the prospects for further UN Security Council measures appear dim.Russia and China vetoed a US-sponsored resolution that would have imposed additional sanctions on North Korea over its latest ballistic tests on May 25, which South Korea’s military said involved an ICBM flown on a medium-range trajectory and two short-range weapons. Those tests came as Biden wrapped up his trip to South Korea and Japan, where he reaffirmed the US commitment to defend both allies in the face of the North’s nuclear threat.North Korea in March launched an ICBM almost straight up at full-range capacity and saw it fly higher and for longer than any weapon it had ever tested, demonstrating the potential to reach the entirety of the US mainland.Nuclear negotiations between Washington and Pyongyang have stalled since 2019 over disagreements in exchanging the release of crippling US-led sanctions against North Korea and the North’s disarmament steps.Despite deepening economic woes, Kim has shown no willingness to fully surrender an arsenal he sees as his strongest guarantee of survival and is clearly trying to convert the dormant denuclearization talks into a mutual arms reduction negotiation with the United States, experts say.Kim’s pressure campaign comes as the country deals with a deadly COVID-19 outbreak across his largely unvaccinated autocracy that lacks public health tools.GAVI, the nonprofit that runs the UN-backed COVAX distribution program, said Friday it understands that North Korea has accepted an offer of vaccines from ally China and has started to administer doses. It isn’t immediately clear how many doses of which vaccines the North received or how the country was rolling them out.

Israeli troops arrest terror suspect during overnight raid in West Bank-Man detained in joint operation by IDF, Border Police and Shin Bet in Bethlehem-By TOI staff-JUN 5,22-Today, 11:27 am

Israeli security forces arrested a terror suspect in the West Bank city of Bethlehem during an overnight raid, the military said on Sunday morning. No Israeli troops were injured during the operation and the suspect was transferred to investigators for questioning. The Israel Defense Forces, together with Border Police and the Shin Bet security service conducted overnight operations across the West Bank as part of Operation Breakwater, the army said. The military launched the operation in the West Bank following a series of terror attacks beginning in March that claimed the lives of 19 people. The ensuing raids sparked clashes that left at least 30 Palestinians dead since mid-March.Security forces clashed with Palestinians over the weekend while carrying out a raid to arrest a man suspected of illegally driving Palestinians across the “seam zone” area along the security barrier. Several Palestinian attackers in the recent terror wave entered Israel illegally from the West Bank.According to the IDF, rioters in the northern West Bank village of Jaba’ threw stones and Molotov cocktails at soldiers during the raid. No Israeli troops were hurt in the clashes. The IDF said soldiers also arrested a terror suspect in Bethlehem during that operation and confiscated several weapons.

Putin threatens strikes on new targets if West gives Ukraine long-range missiles-‘We will draw the appropriate conclusions,’ Russian leader warns after Kyiv struck in missile barrage for first time since end of April-By Blaise GAUQUELIN and Quentin Tyberghien-jun 5,22-Today, 6:16 pm

KYIV, Ukraine (AFP) — Russian President Vladimir Putin warned Sunday that Moscow will hit new targets if the West supplies Ukraine with long-range missiles, hours after several explosions rocked the Ukrainian capital Kyiv.If Kyiv is provided with such missiles “we will draw the appropriate conclusions and use our arms… to strike targets we haven’t hit before,” Putin was quoted by Russian news agencies as saying. He did not specify which targets he meant.Putin’s comments came after the United States last week announced that it would supply Ukraine with advanced missile systems.Ukrainian officials earlier on Sunday said Russian missiles hit railway infrastructure sites in the first such strikes on Kyiv since April 28.Russia said that it had destroyed tanks supplied to Ukraine by eastern European countries during the strikes.“High-precision, long-range missiles fired by the Russian Aerospace Forces on the outskirts of Kyiv destroyed T-72 tanks supplied by eastern European countries and other armored vehicles that were in hangars,” Russian defense ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said. One person was wounded and AFP reporters saw several buildings with blown-out windows near one of the sites that was targeted.Leonid, a 63-year-old local resident who used to work at the facility, said he heard three or four explosions.“There is nothing military there but they are bombing everything,” he said.Vasyl, 43, said he heard five blasts.“People are afraid now,” he said, walking back to his damaged home with two loaves of bread.Ukrainian authorities did not want to identify the precise locations of the explosions for security reasons.Severodonetsk ‘divided’ Meanwhile, in the east of the country, the battle for control of Severodonetsk raged on.The city is the largest still in Ukrainian hands in the Luhansk region of the Donbas, where Russian forces have been advancing gradually after retreating or being beaten back from other parts of the country, including Kyiv.Luhansk regional governor Sergiy Gaiday said that Russian forces had lost ground in the city and it was now “divided in two.”“The Russians were in control of about 70 percent of the city, but have been forced back over the past two days,” he said on Telegram.“They are afraid to move freely around the city.”Russia’s army on Saturday claimed some Ukrainian military units were withdrawing from Severodonetsk, but Mayor Oleksandr Striuk said Ukrainian forces were fighting to retake the city.“We are currently doing everything necessary to re-establish total control” of the city, he said in an interview broadcast on Telegram.‘Put Russia in its place’Tens of thousands of people have been killed, millions forced to flee and towns turned into rubble since Putin ordered an all-out assault on his pro-Western neighbor on February 24.Western powers have imposed increasingly stringent sanctions on Russia and supplied arms to Ukraine, but divisions have emerged on how to react.French President Emmanuel Macron said Friday Putin had committed a “fundamental error” but that Russia should not be “humiliated” so that a diplomatic solution could be found.Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba reacted Saturday by saying such calls “only humiliate France” and any country taking a similar position.“It is Russia that humiliates itself. We all better focus on how to put Russia in its place,” he said.Despite diplomatic efforts, the conflict has raged in the south and east of the country. The press service of the Ukrainian president’s office on Sunday reported nine civilians killed in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions from shelling.-Fears over food-Apart from the human toll, the conflict has caused widespread damage to Ukraine’s cultural heritage. On Saturday, Ukrainian officials reported a large Orthodox wooden monastery, a popular pilgrimage site, had burnt down and blamed Russia for the shelling.Moscow continues to prove “its inability to be part of the civilized world,” Culture Minister Oleksandr Tkachenko said in a statement.Russia’s defense ministry blamed “Ukrainian nationalists” for the blaze.Russian troops now occupy a fifth of Ukraine’s territory, according to Kyiv, and Moscow has imposed a blockade on its Black Sea ports, sparking fears of a global food crisis. Ukraine and Russia are among the top wheat exporters in the world. The United Nations said it was leading intense negotiations with Russia to allow Ukraine’s grain harvest to leave the country. The UN has warned that African countries, which normally import over half of their wheat consumption from Ukraine and Russia, face an “unprecedented” crisis.Food prices in Africa have already exceeded those in the aftermath of the 2011 Arab Spring uprisings and the 2008 food riots.‘Game of survival’Away from the battlefield, Ukraine will be fighting for victory over Wales in Sunday’s play-off final as the war-torn country aims to reach its first football World Cup since 2006.“We all understand that the game with Wales will no longer be about physical condition or tactics, it will be a game of survival,” said Ukraine player Oleksandr Zinchenko.“Everyone will fight to the end and give their all, because we will play for our country.”

Russian missile barrage strikes Kyiv, shattering city’s month-long sense of calm-Unspecified ‘infrastructure’ attacked in first airstrike on Kyiv since late April, showing Moscow is still ready to hit capital despite focus on Ukraine’s eastBy John Leicester-jun 5,22-Today, 1:28 pm

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — A barrage of Russian missiles struck Ukraine’s capital early Sunday, hitting unspecified “infrastructure” targets, Kyiv’s mayor said. No one was reported killed, with one person hospitalized with injuries. But the attack shattered a sense of calm in Kyiv, which hadn’t seen similar strikes since the April 28 visit of UN Secretary-General António Guterres. And it showed that Russia still had the capability and willingness to target Ukraine’s capital after abandoning its wider offensive across the country to instead focus its efforts in the east. The missiles hit the Darnytski and Dniprovski districts in the city and emergency services had arrived at the scene, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on the Telegram messaging app. Air raid sirens had gone off around the time of the blasts. An acrid smell of smoke filled the air in the Darnystki district of eastern Kyiv, with a billowing pillar of smoke rising in the sky. Soldiers and police blocked off a main road to the site. Smoke billowed from the charred and blackened wreckage of a warehouse-type structure.A resident of an apartment overlooking the area with the charred warehouse said she’d been awakened by loud explosions in the early morning. She said the site had been targeted before but without causing such damage.Police near the site told an Associated Press reporter that military authorities had banned the taking of images. Soldiers also blocked off a road in a nearby area leading toward a large railway yard.Elsewhere, Russian forces continued their push to take ground in eastern Ukraine, with missile and airstrikes carried out on cities and villages of the Luhansk region, with the war now past the 100-day mark.Luhansk governor Sergiy Gaiday said on Telegram that “airstrikes by Ka-52 helicopters were carried out in the areas of Girske and Myrna Dolyna, by Su-25 aircraft — on Ustynivka,” while Lysychansk was hit by a missile from the Tochka-U complex.A total of 13 houses were damaged in Girske, and five in Lysychansk. Another airstrike was reported in the eastern city of Kramatorsk by its mayor Oleksandr Goncharenko. No one was killed in the attack, he said, but two of the city’s enterprises sustained “significant damage.”On Sunday morning, Ukraine’s General Staff accused Russian forces of using phosphorus munitions in the Kharkiv region and said that Moscow continues to carry out missile and airstrikes on military and civilian infrastructure, including in Kyiv. The General Staff said in its morning update that the Russian troops used phosphorus munitions in the area of the Cherkaski Tyshky village in the Kharkiv region. The claim couldn’t be independently verified. The update also confirmed strikes on Kyiv, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday. It wasn’t immediately clear from the statement which infrastructure facilities in Kyiv were hit.The General Staff also said that the Russian forces continue assault operations in Severodonetsk in the eastern Luhansk region, one of two key cities left to be captured there. The Russians currently control the eastern part of the city, the update said, and are focusing on encircling Ukrainian forces in the area and “blocking off main logistical routes.”In the Black Sea, the General Staff said, five naval-based Kalibr cruise missiles stood ready to be used. The UK military said in its daily intelligence update that Ukrainian counterattacks in Severodonetsk were “likely blunting the operational momentum Russian forces previously gained through concentrating combat units and firepower.”The statement also said that Russia’s military was partly relying on reserve forces of the Luhansk region.“These troops are poorly equipped and trained, and lack heavy equipment in comparison to regular Russian units,” the intelligence update said, adding that “this approach likely indicates a desire to limit casualties suffered by regular Russian forces.”Far from the battlefield, Ukraine’s national soccer players are hoping to secure a World Cup spot when the team takes on Wales later Sunday in Cardiff.

An 18-year-old has been indicted for carrying out a hate crime against a Jewish man in Brooklyn in April, the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office said on Thursday.Logan Jones, from the New York City borough of Staten Island, is facing charges of assault as a hate crime and other related offenses, including menacing and harassment, after attacking a man wearing traditional Hasidic attire who was on his way to a synagogue earlier this year.According to the indictment, Jones and five other individuals approached the 21-year-old victim and his wife in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn on April 1, 2022 at around 7:55 p.m., after the start of Shabbat, and began physically attacking him by punching his face and kicking him as he fell to the ground. The assault, referred to in the indictment as “unprovoked,” was only stopped after the victim’s wife had asked a bystander to call 911 and the group of assailants fled the scene.Attacks against Jews in Brooklyn often take place on Shabbat, when religious Jews do not carry cell phones, making it difficult to immediately report the incidents. Most antisemitic assaults in New York target ultra-Orthodox Jews, who are identifiable by their attire. The victim in the April attack suffered severe head and body pain, an abrasion to the cheek, and bruising to the face and mouth, the Attorney’s Office said.“Without warning or provocation, this defendant allegedly assaulted an innocent man simply because of his Jewish faith,” said District Attorney Eric Gonzalez. “Crimes that target individuals because of their religion, race, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation are a threat to everything we stand for here in Brooklyn. We will now seek to hold the defendant accountable.”WANTED for AN Assault in front of 58 Gerry Street. #Brooklyn @NYPD90pct on 4/1/22 @ 7:55 PM without and prior words or provocation, the individuals punched and kicked the Hasidic victim about the body, forcing him to the ground Reward up to $3500Call 1-800-577-TIPS. Bail was set at $30,000 and the defendant was ordered to return to court on June 24, 2022.After the attack, the Anti-Defamation League said it was “shocked at the viciousness” of the assault, and New York Governor Kathy Hochul said she was “outraged.”Also in New York City, a suspected arson in Brooklyn last week is being investigated as a hate crime after investigators found red swastikas spray-painted on a hallway wall in the charred building, police said.Antisemitic hate crimes in New York surged earlier this year, with 56 reported incidents in February compared to 11 during the same month last year, but were down slightly last month, with 25 anti-Jewish crimes in May, compared to 36 during the same time period in 2021. Antisemitic incidents spiked in May of last year during Israel’s conflict with Gaza terror groups.Hate crimes in New York City as a whole rose 100% in 2021, which also saw an increase in anti-Asian hate crimes.Jews are targeted in hate crimes in New York more than any other group, by far. Between January and the end of March this year, there were 67 confirmed anti-Jewish crimes, representing 47% of all hate crimes in the city, according to the NYPD.Hate crimes usually do not lead to arrests in New York. The 198 confirmed hate crimes against Jews in New York last year only resulted in 58 arrests.

3 dead, 11 wounded as gunmen fire into crowd in downtown Philadelphia-Two handguns recovered, no immediate arrests, after Saturday night attack in popular South Street area-By AP-jun 5,22-Today, 4:52 pm

PHILADELPHIA — Gunfire killed three people and wounded at least 11 others in a popular downtown Philadelphia entertainment district late Saturday night, authorities said.Police officers were patrolling the area on South Street in downtown Philadelphia when they heard multiple gunshots and witnessed several suspects firing into a large crowd just before midnight, Police Inspector D. F. Pace said during a news conference. An officer shot at one of the suspects from about 30 feet (9 meters) away, but it is unclear if the suspect was hit, Pace said.“You can imagine there were hundreds of individuals just enjoying South Street, as they do every single weekend, when this shooting broke out,” Pace said. Two men and a woman were among those killed in the shooting, he said. Their names were not made public by authorities. The conditions of those who were wounded by gunfire remains unknown. Two handguns were recovered, including one with an extended magazine, police said. No arrests have been made.South Street is known for its entertainment venues and night life with multiple bars, restaurants and businesses. Surveillance video from a local business posted by WTXF-TV showed scores of people milling about on the sidewalks and in the street who then suddenly began to flee en masse as the gunfire began.Pace said police expect to be able to gather “a lot of video surveillance footage” from the many businesses along the street later in the day to try to identify suspects.Eric Walsh, closing up the outdoor seating area of a bar along the block, told The Philadelphia Inquirer that the scene was “chaos.” He said he saw a young woman collapse to the ground on the corner.“People were coming off the street with blood splatters on white sneakers and skinned knees and skinned elbows,” Walsh said. “We literally just were balling up napkins and wetting them and handing them to people.”

Death toll in catastrophic Iran building collapse rises to at least 38-Rescuers still pulling bodies out of wreckage two weeks after tower fell in city of Abadan; incident has prompted charges of government corruption and neglect-By AP-jun 5,22-Today, 3:02 pm

The death toll in a catastrophic tower collapse in southwestern Iran rose to at least 38 on Sunday, state TV reported, as emergency workers pulled another body from the rubble amid fears still more could be trapped in the destruction. It’s unclear how many more people remain unaccounted for in the collapse of the still under-construction tower at the Metropol Building in Abadan nearly two weeks ago. Rescuers were still working and families still waiting for word of their loved ones despite promises the search operation would be finished by now.The structural building failure in the oil-rich but impoverished Khuzestan province has focused public attention on shoddy construction practices and prompted mass allegations of government corruption and negligence. Authorities have arrested 13 people as part of a broad probe into the disaster, including Abadan’s mayor, Hossein Hamidpour, who resigned last Friday.Protesters have gathered in mourning at the collapse site, denouncing top officials and demanding accountability, according to videos widely shared on social media and analyzed by The Associated Press. However, reporting on events in Abadan remains extremely difficult as the threat of arrest looms. Authorities have disrupted internet access, according to experts, restricting people’s ability to share videos and information. In an effort to address public mistrust, President Ebrahim Raisi last Friday paid a surprise visit to Abadan, where he surveyed the disaster site and offered personal condolences to the families of victims. During his trip, businessmen lodged complaints about the scope of corruption in local government, state-run media reported.Raisi vowed the government would “not hesitate to deal with the offenders” and would “monitor construction more closely, especially high-rise buildings.”“The perpetrators should know that the passage of time will not absolve them of responsibility and accountability,” he said.Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei also touched on events in Abadan during his live televised speech on Saturday — providing further indication of their seriousness. In his first speech outside his residence since the pandemic struck Iran, Khamenei warned of severe consequences for those who violated regulations and may have helped cause the disaster in Abadan.“Those responsible must be brought to justice, their punishment should serve as a lesson for others, and similar incidents in future should be avoided,” he said.Khamenei also blamed the recent outbreak of protests in the restive Khuzestan province on Iran’s “enemies,” including “treacherous Iranians” abroad, who he said try to harm the country’s interest through “psychological warfare and online campaigns.”Reza Pahlavi, in exile in the US, the eldest son of Iran’s deposed monarch before the 1979 Islamic Revolution, last week seized on reports of growing anger in Abadan to call for the creation of a “unified front against the Islamic Republic.”

Leak from Dead Sea Works pollutes surrounding area; protected plants found dead-Nature and Parks Authority says leak from supply canal caused salination of soil; plants dying as a result of the leak, some of them protected species; ICL says working to fix it-By TOI staff-jun 5,22-Today, 6:41 pm

A leak from a supply canal of the Dead Sea Works into Nahal Tze’elim in the south of the country appears to have caused damage to the surrounding ecosystem, the Israel Nature and Parks Authority said Sunday. The authority said that some plants in the area were found dead, noting that some of them were defined as protected species.Investigators arrived on the scene and found leaks east of the supply canal, which in turn caused salination of the soil. There did not appear to be any evidence of soil erosion as a result of the leak. However, the authority noted that there was evidence that the area was populated by deer, rabbits, hyenas, foxes and rodents, meaning wildlife could potentially suffer due to a lack of food and shade if plants were dying. It was not clear if any animals had already been harmed. The authority said that water flow was weak at the source of the leak, but increased downstream. There was also an area where the leaked liquid had collected.Drones were used to map the area of the incident in an attempt to assess the extent of the damage, as well as to investigate the possibility of the pollution spreading further. There was said to be no immediate danger to the wider nature reserve.Dead Sea Works is owned by Israel Chemicals Ltd (ICL), which said it had reported the leak on Saturday and launched an operation to fix the issue.“Upon initial identification of the case, it was reported to the authorities in accordance with the procedures and its causes are being investigated. The company is working to provide a prompt response and immediate treatment to reduce seawater infiltration,” ICL said in a statement.ICL is also the parent company of ICL Rotem (formerly Rotem Amfert Negev Ltd), which is responsible for one of Israel’s worst environmental disasters — the 2017 disaster in which between 100,000 and 250,000 cubic meters (3.5 million to 8.8 million cubic feet) or more of highly toxic wastewater was sent rushing through the Ashalim stream, causing massive damage to the area. The Environmental Protection Ministry is in contact with the Nature and Parks Authority, as well as regional environmental organizations, and is monitoring ICL’s operations while working to find the fastest way to stop the leak and minimize damage to the area. The Dead Sea is receding by around 1.2 meters (four feet) every year. The Jordan River, historically the main source of water for the Dead Sea, is diverted for agricultural and other uses by Israel, Jordan and Syria, all of which have growing populations.Despite that, the Dead Sea Works is allowed to pump huge amounts of water from the lake.ICL is controlled by the Ofer family’s Israel Corporation, the country’s largest holding company. It makes fertilizers, metals and other chemical products from bromine, phosphate, magnesium and potash taken from the Dead Sea or mined elsewhere in the Negev Desert.

Study on long COVID finds hidden lung abnormalities not detected in routine tests-Initial results suggest significantly impaired air transfer from lungs to bloodstream, linked to breathlessness, indicating possible microscopic damage to respiratory system-By TOI staffJAN 30,22-Today, 6:51 pm

Researchers have discovered abnormalities in the lungs of long COVID patients who suffered from breathlessness a long time after they were infected, which could not be detected with routine tests, according to media reports. The pilot study used xenon — an odorless, colorless, tasteless and chemically non-reactive gas — to investigate possible lung damage in patients who recovered from the disease but continued to experience shortness of breath.Initial results suggested significantly impaired gas transfer from the lungs to the bloodstream even though other tests – including CT scans – came back as normal, raising the possibility that COVID causes microscopic damage to the respiratory system.Breathlessness is a symptom in the majority of long COVID patients, but it has been unclear whether this is linked to other factors such as changes in breathing patterns, tiredness, or something more fundamental. The study’s chief investigator, Fergus Gleeson, professor of radiology at the University of Oxford and consultant radiologist at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We knew from our post-hospital COVID study that xenon could detect abnormalities when the CT scan and other lung function tests are normal.“What we’ve found now is that, even though their CT scans are normal, the xenon MRI scans have detected similar abnormalities in patients with long COVID. These patients have never been in hospital and did not have an acute severe illness when they had their COVID-19 infection. Some of them have been experiencing their symptoms for a year after contracting COVID-19,” he added.“There are now important questions to answer. Such as, how many patients with long COVID will have abnormal scans, the significance of the abnormality we’ve detected, the cause of the abnormality, and its longer-term consequences.“Once we understand the mechanisms driving these symptoms, we will be better placed to develop more effective treatments.”In the study, the patients were required to lie in an MRI scanner and breathe in one liter of the gas, which was tweaked so that it could be seen by the machine.Because xenon, which is safe to inhale, behaves in a very similar way to oxygen, radiologists can observe how it moves from the lungs into the bloodstream. The scans take just a few minutes and, as they do not require radiation exposure, can be repeated over time to see changes to the lungs.Dr. Emily Fraser, a respiratory consultant who leads the Oxford Post-COVID Assessment Clinic, said: “These are interesting results and may indicate that the changes observed within the lungs of some patients with long COVID contribute to breathlessness.“However, these are early findings and further work to understand the clinical significance is key,” she cautioned.Asked what people suffering from the symptom can take from the findings, she added: “I think that the message should be that we are actively researching what is driving long COVID.”But Dr. Fraser also said people should not give up on their exercises and rehab, as these are helpful.“Xenon follows the pathway of oxygen when it is taken up by the lungs and can tell us where the abnormality lies between the airways, gas exchange membranes and capillaries in the lungs,” she said. While the full study will recruit about 400 participants, the initial pilot had 36 participants making up three groups: patients diagnosed with long COVID who have normal CT scans, people who had been hospitalized with COVID more than three months previously and were not experiencing long COVID, and a healthy control group. The findings, which have not been peer-reviewed, have been posted on the bioRxiv pre-print server.

The Hill-UN ambassador says Russia would not amass troops 'if you don't have intentions to use them-Sun, January 30, 2022, 12:04 PM

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield said on Sunday that Russia would not have amassed such a large military presence along the Ukrainian border without the intention of using it."We've seen the Russian playbook before. They are using disinformation. They're encouraging Ukrainians not to worry about an attack, but we know that the attack is possible," Thomas-Greenfield said on ABC's "This Week.""You don't amass 100,000 troops if you don't have intentions to use them," she added of the Russian troops along the border. Her remarks come as concerns about a potential Russian invasion of Ukraine mount.Last week, President Biden announced that he would send a small number of U.S. troops to the eastern Europe in the 'near term'"I'll be moving troops to Eastern Europe in the NATO countries in the near term," Biden said on Friday to reporters at Joint Base Andrews. "Not too many."While the White House seems to be preparing for the strong possibility of a Russian attack in the near future, Ukraine has disagreed that an invasion is imminent and has been critical of the U.S. State Department's decision to encourage Americans and family members of embassy officials in Ukraine to leave the country. Now, the U.N. Security Council is set to have a meeting on Monday about the issue."We're going to go in the room prepared to listen to them, but we're not going to be distracted by their propaganda,"Thomas-Greenfield also said on Sunday ahead of the meeting. "And we're going to be prepared to respond to any disinformation that they attempt to spread during this meeting.""We have made clear that we're prepared to address our concerns, Ukrainian concerns, and Russian concerns at the diplomatic table. But it cannot be done on the battlefield," the ambassador added.

NATO chief says reaching out to Russia but 'prepared for worst' by AFP Staff Writers-Brussels (AFP) Jan 26, 2022

NATO on Wednesday delivered its proposals to Russia for a diplomatic solution to tensions triggered by Moscow's military build-up near Ukraine, Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said, but remained "prepared for the worst"."We are now reaching out to Russia once again to try to pursue a path of dialogue and find a political solution," he said, after the alliance sent Moscow a written response to its security demands."But of course while we are hoping for and working for a good solution, de-escalation, we are also prepared for the worst," he said.Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko confirmed to the news agency Interfax that Moscow had received the response from NATO, which was handed to Russia's envoy in Brussels.Asked how long Russia could take to study the response, he said: "We'll read it. We'll study it. Our partners had taken nearly a month and a half to study our draft."Stoltenberg said US-led NATO was ready for a "real conversation" over Russian concerns -- but rejected a key Moscow demand to close the door on Ukraine's hope of joining."We cannot and will not compromise on the principles on which the security of our alliances and security in Europe and North America rest," he said. The alliance's proposals were handed over the same time as the United States delivered its own written response to the Kremlin.Moscow blindsided the West by publishing two draft treaties for the United States and NATO in December that would see Washington's influence rolled back in eastern Europe. The demands were made as Moscow massed some 100,000 troops on its border with Ukraine, in a move the West warns could be the prelude to a large-scale invasion.Stoltenberg laid out a raft of areas where he said NATO thought it could engage constructively with the Kremlin, including improving communications, increasing transparency around military exercises, and arms control.NATO is hoping its offer is enough to convince Moscow to hold further talks with the alliance and de-escalate the tensions on the ground.

SUPERPOWERS-Ukraine separatists urge Russia to send modern weapons-by AFP Staff Writers-Moscow (AFP) Jan 27, 2022

A Ukrainian separatist leader on Thursday urged Russia to send modern weapons to the breakaway statelets to help them defend themselves against Western-backed Kyiv forces.Denis Pushilin spoke after Russia's ruling party urged the Kremlin to start arming the separatist-held regions with tensions soaring between Moscow and the West."First and foremost, we need to counter the Bayraktars," he told pro-Kremlin spin doctor Vladimir Solovyov in an online interview, referring to Turkish-made drones.Solovyov said Russia was capable of supplying separatists with next generation weapons instead of Kalashnikov assault rifles and Soviet-era machine guns.Pushilin said: "We need to talk about the weapons you mean."Pushilin, the self-declared leader of the Donetsk People's Republic, accused Kyiv authorities of continuing to prepare for an offensive and stocking up on ammunition and fuel.On Wednesday, a senior member of United Russia, Vladimir Vasilyev, said the governing party had asked the country's leadership to start arming Ukraine's separatist-held regions. The United States and its EU allies accuse Russia of seeking to upend European stability by threatening an invasion of Ukraine, a former Soviet republic striving to join NATO and other Western institutions.Moscow denies plans to invade the country, where in addition to annexing Crimea, it has been backing separatist forces in the east since 2014. The conflict has already claimed more than 13,000 lives. The West and Kyiv accuse Moscow of fuelling an insurgency by sending weapons and troops across the border.Russia has always denied such claims, but Wednesday's statement could mark a change in Moscow's official stance. There was no immediate official reaction from the Kremlin.

US rejects Russia demand on Ukraine but talks see new life-By Shaun Tandon with Stuart Williams in Paris, Jonathan Brown in Moscow and Dmytro Gorshkov in Kyiv

Moscow (AFP) Jan 27, 2022 - A Ukrainian separatist leader on Thursday urged Russia to send modern weapons to the breakaway statelets to help them defend themselves against Western-backed Kyiv forces.Denis Pushilin spoke after Russia's ruling party urged the Kremlin to start arming the separatist-held regions with tensions soaring between Moscow and the West."First and foremost, we need to counter the Bayraktars," he told pro-Kremlin spin doctor Vladimir Solovyov in an online interview, referring to Turkish-made drones.Solovyov said Russia was capable of supplying separatists with next generation weapons instead of Kalashnikov assault rifles and Soviet-era machine guns.Pushilin said: "We need to talk about the weapons you mean."Pushilin, the self-declared leader of the Donetsk People's Republic, accused Kyiv authorities of continuing to prepare for an offensive and stocking up on ammunition and fuel.On Wednesday, a senior member of United Russia, Vladimir Vasilyev, said the governing party had asked the country's leadership to start arming Ukraine's separatist-held regions. The United States on Wednesday rejected Russia's key demand to bar Ukraine from NATO and said it believed Moscow was ready to invade but offered what it called a new "diplomatic path" out of the crisis.Secretary of State Antony Blinken said he would speak again in the coming days to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, as a separate initiative by France brought a promise by Moscow at least to keep talking to Ukraine's government. One month after Russia put forward sweeping security proposals, having sent tens of thousands of troops to Ukraine's border, the United States delivered a reply in co-ordination with NATO allies and said it was ready for any eventuality."It sets out a serious diplomatic path forward should Russia choose it," Blinken told reporters of the US response, which he said would remain confidential. He renewed an offer on "reciprocal" measures to address mutual security concerns, including reductions of missiles in Europe and transparency on military drills and Western aid to Ukraine. But he made clear that the United States would not budge on Russia's core demand that Ukraine never be allowed to join NATO, the US-backed military alliance."From our perspective, I can't be more clear -- NATO's door is open, remains open, and that is our commitment," Blinken said.Russia, which has a fraught historical relationship with Ukraine, has fueled an insurgency in the former Soviet republic's east that has killed more than 13,000 people since 2014.Russia that year also seized Crimea after the overthrow of a government in Kyiv that had resisted efforts to move closer to Europe. The United States has warned of severe and swift consequences if Russia invades, including possible personal sanctions on President Vladimir Putin, and NATO has put 8,500 troops on standby."While we are hoping for and working for a good solution -- de-escalation -- we are also prepared for the worst," NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said.In a phone call with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi, Blinken on Wednesday sought to impress upon Beijing the "global security and economic risks posed by further Russian aggression against Ukraine," according to State Department spokesman Ned Price.China's foreign ministry said in a statement after the call that Wang told Blinken Russia's "reasonable security concerns should be taken seriously and resolved."Blinken's deputy Wendy Sherman, who led a previous round of talks with Russia, said Putin seemed ready to invade despite the US warnings."I have no idea whether he's made the ultimate decision, but we certainly see every indication that he is going to use military force sometime perhaps (between) now and the middle of February," Sherman told a forum.- French-led talks -In another bid to defuse tensions, senior Russian and Ukrainian officials met for eight hours in Paris with representatives of France and Germany.Dmitry Kozak, the Kremlin deputy chief of staff, said the talks were "not simple" but that another round would take place in two weeks in Berlin.France said after the so-called Normandy Format talks that the envoys committed to a fragile July 2020 ceasefire in eastern Ukraine between government forces and pro-Moscow separatists."We need a supplementary pause. We hope that this process will have results in two weeks," Kozak said.An aide to French President Emmanuel Macron stressed that the talks had been about resolving the separatist fighting in eastern Ukraine, not the threat of a Russian invasion.France and Germany have joined the United States in warning Russia against an invasion but have been less direct about sanctions.Germany's new coalition government has sent mixed signals on whether it would sever the soon-to-open Nord Stream 2 pipeline from Russia, which will circumvent Ukraine to provide gas to Europe's largest economy.Amid warnings that tensions with the West could push Russia to squeeze supplies, Australian officials said Canberra stood ready to ship natural gas to Europe."We haven't received a formal request, but we are indicating that, of course, we are ready to support our friends," Resources Minister Keith Pitt told media in Sydney.US President Joe Biden, who spoke with European leaders by video-conference on Tuesday, said any Russian military attack on Ukraine would trigger "enormous consequences" and could even "change the world."Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, while brushing off the impact, warned that attempts to punish Putin personally would be "destructive."- Ukraine seeks way out -The United States again encouraged its citizens to leave Ukraine, warning an invasion could be imminent. But Ukraine's government, hoping to prevent panic, has played down the dangers and sought to offer ways out.Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba told reporters the Russian troops posed "a threat to Ukraine" but that the numbers deployed were "insufficient for a full-scale offensive."Andriy Yermak, an advisor to President Volodymyr Zelensky who took part in the Paris talks, wrote on Twitter that the meeting was "a strong signal of readiness for a peaceful settlement."burs-sct/ec/sw/leg/axn

US fighter jets arrive in Estonia for training-by AFP Staff Writers-Tallinn (AFP) Jan 26, 2022

Six US fighter jets arrived in Estonia on Wednesday to boost the NATO mission there, as tensions in the region rise over fears of a Russian assault on Ukraine. The F-15E jets arrived at the Amari base in northwest Estonia to take part in an exercise along with four Danish jets due to arrive in Lithuania on Thursday."The additional aircraft will work closely with the current detachments to increase our readiness, build crucial interoperability and underline the robust solidarity across the Alliance," Major General Joerg Lebert, Chief of Staff at Headquarters Allied Air Command in Germany, said in a statement. The exercise is taking place after Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas called for a greater US presence in the Baltic states in order to deter Russia.Following Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014, NATO set up a Baltic air policing mission and placed multinational battle groups in the three Baltic states and Poland. All four countries were once part of the Soviet bloc.Russia has demanded in recent weeks that forces from other NATO countries should be pulled back from the Western military alliance's eastern flank.

The Week-North Korea re-ignites tensions by testing longest-range missile since 2017-Grayson Quay, Weekend editor-Sun, January 30, 2022, 11:45 AM

North Korea launched a missile Sunday, ending a month that saw an unusually high number of weapons tests, NPR reported.According to The New York Times, "The tests enable the North to upgrade its missile forces while putting more pressure on the Biden administration to come to the table with more favorable terms, analysts said."Observers believe this latest launch to be the longest-range missile North Korea has tested since 2017.North Korea suspended nuclear and long-range ballistic missile testing in 2018, but this launch likely marks the end of that self-imposed moratorium."If it's an intermediate-range ballistic missile that they launched, it means that North Korea has come close to abandoning its moratorium," South Korean President Moon Jae-in told his National Security Council on Sunday. "North Korea must stop raising tensions and pressure and accept offers from South Korea and the United States to restart dialogue," he added.North Korea walked away from negotiations in 2019 after the Trump administration refused the authoritarian nation's demand for sanctions relief. The U.S. Indo-Pacific Command and the government of Japan joined South Korea in condemning the test. The missile was launched at 7:52 a.m. local time and did not enter the airspace of any other country.

The Hill-North Korea fires suspected ballistic missile in 7th test this month-Sat, January 29, 2022, 9:45 PM

North Korea launched a suspected ballistic missile on Sunday, according to the South Korean military, marking potentially the seventh missile test the nation has conducted so far in 2022.The missile was launched from a northern inland area, but it was unclear exactly where it landed, according to South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff, The Associated Press reported.North Korea appeared to fire two missiles just three days earlier and another two the day before that. The nation also launched a tactical guided missile, two "hypersonic missiles" and a railway-borne missile system earlier in the month.North Korea has not tested long-range intercontinental ballistic missiles or nuclear weapons since 2017. But after talks with the U.S. died out under former President Donald Trump, the nation began short-range missile testing.Last week, North Korean officials said the country was considering resuming nuclear and missile tests, citing concerns about the U.S.'s "hostile policy and military threat."Leif-Eric Easley, a professor at Ewha University in Seoul, South Korea, told the Associated Press that the shows of force could be a sign that North Korea wants recognition from other world powers."It wants to remind Washington and Seoul that trying to topple it would be too costly. By threatening stability in Asia while global resources are stretched thin elsewhere, Pyongyang is demanding the world compensate it to act like a 'responsible nuclear power,'" Easley told the news outlet. The U.S. has expressed concern about the flurry of missile launches.Secretary of State Antony Blinken has called the tests "profoundly destabilizing."And earlier in January, the U.S. sanctioned five North Koreans who the Treasury Department said were responsible for procuring goods for Pyongyang's ballistic missile program.

North Korea fires two missiles as testing blitz continues-by AFP Staff Writers-Seoul (AFP) Jan 27, 2022

North Korea fired two suspected ballistic missiles Thursday, Seoul said, its sixth weapons test this month in one of the most intense spates of launches on record that has delivered an emphatic rejection of Washington's offers for talks on its nuclear programme.Pyongyang has not fired this many missiles in a calendar month in decades, according to data compiled by the Center for Strategic and International Studies -- a Washington-based think tank. The last time they came close was in 2019, after high-profile negotiations between leader Kim Jong Un and then-United States president Donald Trump collapsed. With US talks stalled since then, Pyongyang has doubled down on Kim's pledges of military modernisation, embarking on a string of sanctions-busting launches this month, including hypersonic missiles. The sabre-rattling comes at a delicate time in the region, with Kim's sole major ally China hosting Winter Olympics next month and South Korea gearing up for a presidential election in March.Seoul's Joint Chiefs of Staff said it detected two suspected short-range ballistic missiles fired from the Hamhung city area towards the East Sea from around 8 am (2300 GMT)."The projectiles flew 190 kilometers (118 miles) at an altitude of 20km," they said.Pyongyang fired two suspected cruise missiles on Tuesday, and tested ballistic missiles on January 14 and 17. It also fired what it said were hypersonic missiles on January 5 and 11."I believe, if we include the two cruise missiles, this is now the most recorded North Korean missile launches in any month ever," analyst Ankit Panda wrote on Twitter. The barrage could be part of North Korea's regular military training, or linked to ongoing celebrations of Kim's decade in power or upcoming domestic anniversaries, he added. The country is preparing to mark the 80th anniversary of the birth of Kim's father, late leader Kim Jong Il, in February, as well as the 110th birthday of the its founding leader Kim Il Sung in April.- 'New capabilities' -North Korea is reeling economically from international sanctions and a two-year-long pandemic blockade, but has managed to develop an "impressive" array of offensive weaponry. Some of the recent tests aim "to develop new capabilities, especially for evading missile defenses," said Leif-Eric Easley, a professor at Seoul's Ewha University."Other launches are intended to demonstrate the readiness and versatility of missile forces that North Korea has already deployed.""Pyongyang is running hard in what it perceives as an arms race with Seoul," Easley added. The distances and altitude of the Thursday tests indicate the launches are part of North Korea's regular military training, said Hong Min, a senior researcher at the Korea Institute for National Unification in Seoul.Such tests are "aimed at thwarting the deployment of US-South Korea strategic maritime assets such as an aircraft fleet," he said."It also reflects Pyongyang's message to the global community that such training is part of its exercise of sovereignty and that the outside world has no business talking about it," he added.Pyongyang has repeatedly defended its weapons programs as part of the "legitimate exercise of the right to self-defence".It has not tested intercontinental ballistic missiles or nukes since 2017, but last week hinted it could restart such launches, blaming US "hostile" policy for forcing its hand. The diplomatic cost to Kim of the recent tests is minimal thanks to strong backing from Beijing, which has blocked efforts to impose new sanctions over short-range missile tests.China's ambassador to South Korea, Xing Haiming, told local radio station MBC on Wednesday that North Korea felt it was not being given sufficient credit for its four-year moratorium on long-range and nuclear testing."They feel that such measures are not taken seriously and that no answers have been given" he said, speaking in Korean..

EU to fund construction of Israel, Cyprus, Greece electricity cable link-Cypriot minister says ‘Eurasia Interconnector,’ which three countries signed off on last year, could push Mediterranean island’s use of renewable energy sources above 50% by 2030-By AP-jan 27,22-Today, 2:02 pm

NICOSIA, Cyprus — The European Union has earmarked 657 million euros ($736 million) for the construction of a 2,000-megawatt undersea electricity cable that will link the power grids of Israel, Cyprus and Greece, Cypriot Energy Minister Natasa Pilides said Thursday.Pilides said the money — from the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility, which bankrolls infrastructure projects — will enable crews to start constructing the segment of the cable that will connect Cyprus with Crete, whose total cost is estimated at roughly 1.6 billion euros ($1.8 billion). Negotiations to transfer the funds are expected to wrap up this summer.Pilides said beyond the project’s geopolitical weight, it will ensure Cyprus’ energy security, boost competitiveness in the power supply sector and help the island nation more easily transition to a green economy. With the cable’s completion, it’s expected that more investment will flow into renewable energy sources enhancing the energy mix of Greece, Cyprus and Israel. Pilides said a study shows that the cable in combination with power storage facilities could push Cyprus’ use of renewable energy sources above 50% by 2030.Pilides and her Greek and Israeli counterparts signed an agreement last October to speed up technical work on the cable dubbed the “Eurasia Interconnector.”The agreement aimed to expedite permits and approvals for feasibility studies and to help the three countries’ national electricity coordinators to cooperate on how best to move forward. The cable’s first phase is expected to be completed by 2025.The move toward an electricity cable link appears to have supplanted plans for a potential pipeline connection between the three countries to convey gas from existing and potential deposits off Cyprus and Egypt to Europe through Greece.Support for the so-called East Med pipeline project has waned amid questions over its feasibility as well as its adverse impact on the environment.Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades said last week that studies on the pipeline’s feasibility were still ongoing, but other alternatives are open to get gas to markets.Among the more likely options is to convey Cypriot gas to Egyptian processing plants where it would be liquefied for export by ship.

Following prison siege, Syria Kurds hunt down jihadists-Syrian Democratic Forces claim to retake full control of Ghwayran prison, where six-day battle with IS fighters claimed more than 200 lives-By Gihad Darwish-jan 27,22-Today, 2:00 pm

HASAKEH, Syria (AFP) — Kurdish-led forces on Thursday found dozens of jihadists holed up in a Syrian prison as they carried out mop-up operations after recapturing the facility from Islamic State group jihadists. An IS assault on the sprawling Ghwayran prison complex near the city of Hasakeh on January 20 sparked six days of fighting, in violence that claimed more than 200 lives. It was the most high-profile attack launched by the jihadists since the loss of their “caliphate” nearly three years ago.The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces said they had retaken full control of Ghwayran prison on Wednesday, ending battles that turned the largest city in northeastern Syria into a war zone. But search operations the next day found around 60-90 jihadists still holed up in one wing of the prison, the SDF said, adding that 3,500 IS inmates had so far surrendered to its forces.“Our forces have made a call for safe surrender… and in case they did not surrender, we will deal with them firmly,” it said in a statement.Hasakeh, meanwhile, entered its fourth day in lockdown with US-backed Kurdish forces blocking all entrances to the city to keep fleeing jihadists from crossing into other areas.Around 45,000 people had fled their homes in Hasakeh to escape the violence, according to the United Nations, with many taking shelter in mosques or wedding halls inside the city.‘Risked our lives’On Thursday, families gathered at a checkpoint erected at the entrance to the neighborhood of Ghwayran, pleading with security forces to let them through, according to an AFP correspondent.“We came to check on our house,” said Abu Hamza, who was waiting in the blistering cold with his five children.“But they turned us away because the situation is not good,” he added.Nearby, two women carrying plastic bags packed with bread were also hoping to gain access to the neighborhood where they said trapped civilians had been left without basic supplies for days.“People have been left without bread, without water, without anything,” one of the women told AFP.“We came, and risked our lives to buy bread for the neighborhood and we will distribute it,” she said. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Kurdish forces combing areas inside the prison were proceeding with “great caution over fears of suicide bombers or landmines laid by the IS group.”The Britain-based war monitor said 156 IS jihadists, 55 Kurdish fighters and seven civilians had been killed since the start of the assault. The Kurdish authorities have insisted no inmates escaped from the compound but the Observatory, which relies on sources on the ground, has said significant numbers got away.‘Broader crisis’Ghwayran held an estimated 3,500 IS inmates, including around 700 minors, when the initial IS attack began with explosives-laden vehicles driven by suicide bombers.“The Kurdish-led forces’ recapture of the prison ends this immediate deadly ordeal, but the broader crisis involving these prisoners is far from over,” Human Rights Watch warned on Wednesday.“The US-led coalition and others involved need to quickly ensure that all prisoners, especially the wounded, ill and children, are safe and receive food, water and medical care,” it added.Prisoners who surrendered were being transferred to safer facilities as operations in Ghwayran continued, the SDF said.Kurdish authorities say more than 50 nationalities are represented in Kurdish-run prisons holding more than 12,000 IS suspects. The Kurdish administration has long warned it does not have the capacity to hold, let alone put on trial, all the IS fighters captured in years of operations.“I think we should not have been surprised, we have been warning about this for quite some time,” UN special envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen told the Security Council Wednesday when asked about the attack. The administration’s foreign policy chief Abdulkarim Omar said it was up to the international community to put foreign jihadists on trial or repatriate them. The IS threat is “like a fireball, it gets more dangerous and complicated with time,” he told AFP on Wednesday. The self-declared IS caliphate, established in 2014, once straddled large parts of Iraq and Syria. After five years of military operations conducted by local and international forces, its last rump was eventually flushed out on the banks of the Euphrates in eastern Syria in March 2019.

Naming Raisi, ex-UN officials urge probe of Iran’s 1988 mass execution of dissidents-Former senior United Nations officials and Nobel prize winners call for investigation into killings of some 30,000 detainees, with Iranian president among alleged perpetrators-By AFP-jan 27,22-Today, 1:43 pm

LONDON — Former senior United Nations officials and Nobel prize winners on Thursday urged the UN human rights office to launch a probe into mass executions of political prisoners in Iran.An open letter made public calls for the Human Rights Council to launch an international investigation into the killings of some 30,000 detainees in 1988.It names Iran’s current President Ebrahim Raisi and the head of judiciary Gholam Hossein Mohseni Ejei among the alleged perpetrators, who “continue to enjoy impunity.”The letter says “thousands of political prisoners who refused to abandon their beliefs were executed. The victims were buried in mass graves scattered throughout the country.”The killings took place after Iran’s then-spiritual leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini declared a fatwa on prisoners who supported the People’s Mojahedin of Iran, an opposition group, which Tehran considered a terrorist organization. Those executed included Marxists and other leftists. Khomeini died in 1989.“We believe it’s long overdue for the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet to investigate the 1988 massacre,” the open letter reads.Ultra-conservative cleric Raisi was elected president of Iran in June last year, replacing Hassan Rouhani. For opposition and human rights groups, his name is linked to the 1988 executions when he was deputy prosecutor of the Revolutionary Court in Tehran.Exiled opposition groups say he was part of a commission that sent thousands of jailed opponents to their deaths within a few months.Raisi has denied involvement in the executions. In 2019, the US placed Raisi on a sanctions list citing the executions and other alleged rights abuses. The letter was organized by a London-based association of families of victims called Justice for the Victims of the 1988 Massacre in Iran.Signatories include ex-senior UN figures such as Joachim Rucker, a former president of the Human Rights Council, and Claude Heller, a former president of the Security Council.Others signing included the former president of Chile Ricardo Escobar, the former president of the European Commission Jacques Santer and the former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, as well as 18 Nobel Laureates. The National Council of Resistance of Iran, a coalition of opposition groups, last August urged police in Scotland to arrest Raisi for human rights and abuses and genocide if he attended the UN climate summit in Glasgow in November.Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have both called for his indictment for human rights violations and crimes against humanity.

Snow blankets Jerusalem, transforming city into winter wonderland-Rare covering of white delights residents as schools, kindergartens stay shut; snow may not stick around for long, though, with rain falling and temperatures set to rise-By TOI staff-JAN 27,22-Today, 11:58 am

Jerusalem residents woke up Thursday to a blanket of white after a rare storm saw around 20 centimeters of snow settle on the capital overnight, delighting adults and children alike. However, it may not last for long, with rain starting on Thursday morning set to continue into the weekend in most parts of the country, along with a slight rise in temperatures. The severe weather system, dubbed Elpis, had dropped snow on the north of the county from early Wednesday morning, with the conditions spreading steadily south throughout the day.Municipal workers worked through the night to clear roads in the city, with 250 snow plows deployed and nearly 150 tons of salt spread over roads. But schools and kindergartens remained shut on Thursday, allowing the children of the city to enjoy the snow.Israel’s central hilly region, including Jerusalem, gets snowfall once every few years, though forecasts of snow often don’t pan out. The storm also brought snow to the north, and other parts of the country saw strong winds and heavy rainfall.
